Description

Simultaneous Multi-Panel PUSCH Transmission EnhancementsTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Examples of embodiments herein relate generally to uplink transmissions in a wireless system and, more specifically, relate to simultaneous physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmissions.BACKGROUND

[0002] For wireless systems such as cellular systems, data rates keep increasing. For example, customer premise equipment (CPE) is telecommunications equipment that is installed at a customer's location, typically at their home or business. CPE may be used for telecommunications applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and digital video. Digital video, in particular takes a lot of data.

[0003] One promising technique for transferring this data is for a user equipment (UE) to have multiple antenna panels that communicate over physical uplink shared channels (PUSCHs) to multiple transmission-reception points (TRPs). This requires quite a bit of coordination between the UE and the TRPs.BRIEF SUMMARY

[0029] The examples herein relate at least in part to PUS CH, an overview of which is now provided. In 5G NR, PUSCH is the physical uplink channel that carries user data. The timefrequency structure of reference signals depends on the type of waveform configured for PUSCH, as defined in 3GPP TS 38.211 Sections 6.4.1.1 and 6.4.1.2. When transform precoding is disabled, the waveform configured is cyclic -prefix-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM). When transform precoding is enabled, the waveform configured is discrete- Fourier-transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM). Two transmission schemes are supported for PUSCH in Rel-15 NR that support explicit TX beam indication: codebook-based transmission and non-codebook-based transmission.

[0030] An introduction is now provided about Rel-15 UL PUSCH transmission mode(s). Rel-15 specifications enable the UE to be configured with either codebook or noncodebook based PUSCH transmission with two UL SRS resource sets. In other words, based on this configuration, the UE transmits PUSCH up to rank 4 with a single TX antenna panel to a single TRP. In a later part of the text description herein, this mode is referred to as Rel-15 UL TX mode. The target of Rel-15 single-panel precoded PUSCH with a single TRP is to improve reliability and / or throughput of STxMP PUSCH transmission with a single TRP.

[0031] Rel-17 UL PUSCH transmission mode(s) are now described. FIG. 1 shows an example of Rel-17 single downlink control information indicator (S-DCI) for time-division multiplexing (TDM) multi-transmission-reception point (M-TRP) physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) repetition and antenna panel selection. FIG. 1 shows two TRPs #1 70-1 and #2 70-2 transmitting multiple beams. The TRP #1 70-1 has four beams with the following CRIs: CRI#23;CRI#14; CRI#11 ; and CRI#31, The TRP #270-2 has four beams with the following CRIs: CRI#43; CRI#22; CRI#12; and CRI#32. The UE 10 has two antenna panels 1 110-1 and 2 110-2. The antenna panel 1 110-1 is used for communication via a radio link 11-1 with TRP #1 70-1, and antenna panel 2 110-2 is used for communication via a radio link 11-2 with TRP #270-2. For radio link 11-1, this carries a downlink 130 that provides the following in reference 140: DCI: precoding information-layer-infol, SRI#x, precoding-layer-info2, SRI#y, SRS-set indicator. Radio link 11-1 carries PUSCH 120-1 in UL. For radio link 11-1, this carries PUSCH 120-2 in UL.

[0032] Rel-17 was specified to enhance reliability of uplink transmission in the context of a multi-TRP scenario. The UE 10 is configured with two different UL SRS resource sets with followUnifiedTCIstateSRS information elements to follow two different DL / or joint DL and UL / UL TCI states associated as the spatial source. TCI-State associates one or two downlink (DL) reference signals with a corresponding quasi-colocation (QCL) type.

[0033] Based on the Rel-17 capability set index reporting, a network can be aware of the UE antenna panel (including information on the number of UL SRS antenna ports) specific transmission capability of UL SRS codebook-based transmission into a certain spatial UL direction. Based on this information, the network can trigger transmission of two different UL SRS resource sets with the usage of codebook to obtain TRP-specific TPMI hypotheses (i.e., determine precoder index and rank selection) antenna panel specifically for PUSCH transmissions.

[0034] Based on obtained TRP-specific TPMI and SRI information, the network can trigger non-simultaneous TRP-specific Rel-17 PUSCH transmission by indicating via DCI. As is known, DCI includes multiple codepoint fields, e.g., SRI, TCI, which are information elements which convey information that indicates to the UE to trigger some specific procedure / action. Specifically, a codepoint field assigned for a single SRS resource set indicator, in which 2-bits, and thereby four values, are reserved in Rel-17, when two SRS resource sets are configured with usage of a codebook or non-codebook transmission. O-bit, the first value out of the four possible values of the DCI codepoint, may be used to indicate which of the two SRS resource indicators (SRIs), the first or the second, is used to enable dynamic switching between a single TRP (either TRP1 or either TRP2) PUSCH transmission in time division multiplexing (TDM) manner, andthe other remaining two bits may be used to enable multi-TRP PUSCH transmission between TRP1 and TRP2 in a TDM manner with repetition either cyclical or sequential mapping configured via RRC for mapping two SRIs to PUSCH repetitions. Moreover, for codebook-based transmission, the DCI includes two separate codepoint fields for SRIs and two preceding information and number of transmission layers fields. It is worth noting that the first field indicates the number of transmission layers, whereas the second field does not. For non- codebook-based transmission, the DCI may comprise two SRI codepoint fields, where the first one indicates the transmission layers and second does not. Based on the received single DCI (S- DCI), the terminal device may then transmit the PUSCH transmission using the multiple antenna panels 110 (only one panel at the time). In a later part of the text description herein, this mode is referred to as Rel-17 UL TX mode.

[0035] The Rel-17 specification enables the UE to be configured for either codebookbased or non-codebook-based PUSCH transmission. In other words, based on this configuration, the UE assumes that upon reception of DCI with or without uplink grant, SRS indicators and precoding information are associated with either codebook-based or non-codebook-based PUSCH transmission. The target of Rel-17 TDM based M-TRP PUSCH with repetition is to enhance reliability of PUSCH transmission with M-TRPs.

[0036] For Rel-18, it is important to identify and specify necessary enhancements for uplink MIMO, while necessary enhancements on downlink MIMO that facilitate the use of large antenna array, not only for FR1 but also for FR2, would still need to be introduced to fulfil the request for evolution of NR deployments.

[0037] Higher peak data rate for UL could play a significant role in short-range applications such as home entertainment, video surveillance / monitoring in industrial / healthcare / safety, IAB, and other applications where devices power / form-factor / cost are not as stringent as in traditional handheld devices. UL transmission with >4Tx is useful to bridge the gap between DL and UL spectral efficiency, in both FR1 and FR2. Hence, there is strong need to develop methods and / or signaling solutions to overcome this problem for Rel-18 or beyond releases.

[0038] In comparison to single (S)-DCI based Rel-17 TDM repetition scheme, Rel-18 will specify support for both S-DCI and multi (M)-DCI based simultaneous uplink multi-panelPUSCH schemes with SDM and SFN, targeting to enhance throughput and reliably with reduced latency.

[0039] In an SDM-based scheme, different layers / DMRS ports of one PUSCH are separately precoded and transmitted from different UE panels simultaneously. In an SFN-based transmission scheme, all of the same layers / DMRS ports of one PUSCH transmission occasion are transmitted from two different UE panels simultaneously.

[0040] In general, Rel-17 specifications (e.g., 3GPP TS 38.214, 38.212) do not provide any support for S-DCI or M-DCI based simultaneous UL PUSCH transmission with multiple antenna panels. For S-DCI, a network is assumed to have a centralized scheduler with an ideal backhaul between multiple TRPs, whereas for M-DCI, a distributed scheduler with nonideal backhaul is assumed.

[0041] A Rel-18 UE can be configured to use SFN (single-frequency network) or SDM (spatial division multiplexing) transmission mode. SFN and SDM can be described as follows, where the applied precoding can be a codebook-based or non-codebook-based one:

[0042] 1) SDM scheme: different PUSCH layers and DMRS antenna ports of one codeword are separately precoded and transmitted from different UE antenna panels simultaneously;

[0043] 2) SFN-based transmission scheme: the same PUSCH layers and DMRS antenna ports are transmitted simultaneously with two different precoders via two different UE antenna panels associated with different TCI states.

[0044] The target of Rel-18 SFN-based STxMP PUSCH with two TRPs is to enhance reliability and latency of STxMP PUSCH transmission with M-TRPs. The target of Rel-18 SDM based STxMP PUSCH with two TRPs is to enhance throughput of STxMP PUSCH transmission with M-TRPs. In both SDM and SFN with codebook-based precoding, the UE is provided with a separate precoder matrix for each transmitting panel in DCI via two TPMI entries. Rel-18 supports single-DCI-based STxMP PUSCH SDM scheme, support the layer combinations of { 1+1, 1+2, 2+1 and 2+2} for a single CW case. This applies to SDM with one codeword.

[0045] For Rel-19, even though currently there is no any study or work item available for Rel-19 NR specification work, it can be assumed that Rel-1 will make specification enhancements to improve UL reliability and throughput enhancement for Rel-19. Therefore, oneof potential objectives of Rel-19 NR MIMO is to discuss and define how to provide specification support for simultaneous multi-panel UL transmission with up to four TRP with more than 2 panels, e.g., with four panels (STx4P) targeting CPE / FWA / vehicle / industrial devices (if applicable), where the total number of layers is up to eight across all panels and total number of codewords is up to two across all panels, considering single DCI and multi-DCI based multi- TRP operation.

[0046] As previously discussed, it is expected that the Rel-19 specification will provide support for different simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission modes, e.g., SDM and SFN with up to four TRPs with more than two antenna panels (e.g., four).

[0047] FIG. 2 shows an example of simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission with four TRPs 70-1, 70-2, 70-3, and 70-4 with four antenna panels 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, and 110-4. The radio link 11-1 carries PDCCH on the downlink 130 and the PUSCH 120-1 in uplink, with one layer and having TCI-state#l 220-1, on the UL. The radio link 11-2 carries the PUSCH 120-2, with two layers and having TCI-state#3 220-2, on the UL. The radio link 11-3 carries the PUSCH 120-3, with three layers and having TCLstate#5 220-3, on the UL. The radio link 11-4 carries the PUSCH 120-4, with two layers and having TCI-state#8 22-4, on the UL.

[0048] As shown, the UE 10 can be scheduled via S-DCI to transmit simultaneously precoded PUSCH transmission with rank 8 (with two codewords) with four TRPs as well as four antenna panels. The UE has been configured with multiple UL SRS resource sets (e.g., two or more ) with corresponding TCI state flags. In other words, when PUSCH transmission is triggered via S-DCI with the assumption of an indicated TCI codepoint (via DL DCI format), the UE has understanding based on UL SRS resource set configuration and followUnifiedTCIstateSRS-rl7 information element which of TCI states, indicated via TCI codepoint, are to be applied for simultaneous PUSCH transmission for each of antenna panels. It is noted that a TCI codepoint field can include multiple TCI states, so it scales in principle easily to any number of TCI states. Furthermore, it is assumed that a serving TRP has triggered / configured the UE to transmit four different UL SRS resource sets with corresponding resources with usage ‘codebook’ towards four different TRPs prior to actual PUSCH transmission, based on which a network can determine its precoding and layer information for each TRP specific PUSCH transmissions.

[0049] Since Rel-18 supports only simultaneous PUSCH transmission via two different antenna panels with two indicated TCI states and two configured UL SRS resource sets, a problem arises for a network as to how to indicate precoding and layer information for UEs capable of simultaneous PUSCH transmission with four antenna panels. It is worth noting that Rel-18 DCI format (e.g., 0_l or 0_2) provides only support for two different DCI codepoint fields associated with precoding and layer information. In other words, Rel-18 specification does not provide any support for this.

[0050] Based on the above, ambiguity remains for the network and a Rel-19 UE as to how to indicate, and how to interpret correctly, indicated precoder and layer information for simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission with four antenna panels. The examples herein address the aforementioned problems and provide solutions accordingly.

[0051] To address these and other issues, one example herein proposes a new enhanced method to dynamically indicate precoder or resource and layer information for simultaneous SDM and SFN based multi-antenna panel PUSCH transmission with codebook and non-codebook-based precoding with, e.g., four indicated different TCI states and four UL SRS resource sets, where different TX antenna panels are equipped with a symmetrical number of antenna ports. That is, in an example, there could be one of (1) precoder information or (2) resource and layer information, but this can be dependent on codebook or non-codebook operation content of applied DCI codepoints changes. The dynamic aspect occurs because the time period between when a scheduling grant is received and when the UE transmits is expected to be short, e.g., in the millisecond (ms) range and even less than 1ms. In this case, “a symmetrical number of antenna ports” means that each of the antenna panels has a same number of antenna ports. Moreover, a further example proposes also corresponding UE behaviors (e.g., how the UE should interpret indicated information) for proposed enhanced indication methods for simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission. The primary examples here describe using four Tx panels, as this seems to be a reasonable number of panels for most equipment (e.g., four panels are easy to apply to a rectangular object). However, the number of panels could be from two to four panels.

[0052] One embodiment is described in part through reference to FIG. 3, which is a flowchart of a method performed by a UE when the UE is configured with codebook-basedPUSCH and a parameter indicating a multi-panel scheme is set to a multiple number (e.g., >2 but <4) of panels. In this example, in block 310, when the UE is configured with codebook-based PUSCH and a (e.g., higher layer such as RRC) parameter indicating a multi-panel scheme (is to be used for transmission) is set to a multiple number of panels (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SDMScheme’ or ‘4-panel-SFNScheme’) as well as a corresponding multiple (e.g., four) UL SRS resource sets are configured in uplink DCI with a scheduling grant. The configuring of codebook-based PUSCH means that the configuration includes indication of codebook-based precoding for use for transmission of PUSCH.

[0053] In further detail, as described previously, 4-SRS resource set configuration is not supported in Rel-18. Therefore, here, a UE is configured with 4 different UL SRS resource sets. Even more specifically, scheduling DCI of the UE is configured, e.g., with RRC, with four different UL SRS resource sets. Furthermore, each UL SRS resource set is configured with a single UL SRS resource with N-antenna ports, e.g., N=4. Otherwise, one-to-one mapping could not occur between indicated SRI and TPMI codepoint fields and applied antenna ports of different antenna panels. The scheduling DCI is referred to also as uplink DCI because the information in the DCI is uplink scheduling information, and uplink DCI is also referred to herein as control information for uplink, as scheduling information is part of the control information.

[0054] In block 320, when the parameter is set to indicate a particular number of panels and SDM (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SDMScheme’), values of SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields of uplink scheduling DCI, e.g., DCI format 0_l, indicate separately for the UE precoding and layer information (e.g., an index to uplink codebook matrix / vector and corresponding number of layers ) associated with the third and fourth UL SRS resource sets, respectively (e.g., antenna panel specifically). Additionally, the values of TPMI and 2ndTPMI codepoint fields indicate for the UE precoding and layer information associated with the first and second UL SRS resource sets, respectively. It is noted that SRI is referred to herein also as reference signal resource identity.

[0055] In block 330, when the parameter is set to indicate a particular number of panels and SFN (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SFNScheme’), the value of SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields of uplink scheduling DCI (referred to as control information for uplink),e.g., DCI format 0_l, indicate separately for the UE precoding information (e.g., an index to uplink codebook matrix / vector) associated with the third and fourth UL SRS resource sets, respectively (e.g., antenna panel specifically). Additionally, the TPMI codepoint field indicates for the UE precoding and layer information associated with the first UL SRS resource sets. Furthermore, the value of TPMI codepoint field indicates the number of layers information also for the 2ndTPMI, SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields that are associated with the second, third, and the fourth UL SRS resource sets, respectively.

[0056] In alternative approach, in block 340, the value of 2ndTPMI codepoint field indicates the number of layers information for the TPMI, 2ndTPMI, SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields that are associated with the first, second, third, and the fourth UL SRS resource sets, respectively.

[0057] For blocks 320 / 330 / 340 (and also 420 / 430, described below), there is considered to be a one-to-one mapping between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th UL SRS resource sets and the SRIs and TPMIs as described in the blocks. The reason for this is that RRC, in examples, defines an order for a resource set configured in the DCI based on an order of how SRS resource sets are configured into DCI. Thus, the following language (from block 320) indicates part of this definition and its use: “values of (a 1st) SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields of uplink scheduling DCI (referred to as control information for uplink) indicate separately for the UE precoding and layer information associated with the third and fourth UL SRS resource sets, respectively.” The “separately” means each of the first or second SRI code point fields independently, and the “respectively” indicates for this example the mapping of the 1stand 2ndSRI to the 3rdand 4thUL SRS resource sets, in accordance with the defined order for the resource set configured in the DCI.

[0058] Furthermore, there is assumption in the current 3 GPP specification that PUSCH antenna ports over which precoding (codebook / non-codebook) is performed are the same as UL SRS antenna ports. That is, UL SRS antenna ports are the ones which are associated with UL SRS resources which are assigned with UL SRS resource sets where each UL SRS resource set is associated with different antenna panels.

[0059] The information that precoding and layer information codepoint may carry include the following. This could carry an indication value which is associated with a certainTPMI for a certain number of SRS antenna ports and certain number of layers. In other words, aforementioned codepoint indicates an index to which is associated for certain TPMI value (e.g., a vector / sub-matrix of precoding matrix) for a certain number of SRS antenna ports which itself includes also the number of layers. So, this indicated value itself can reveal how many layers UE need to use when transmitting PUSCH via a certain antenna panel (i.e., UL SRS resource set). FIG. 3A is a figure from 3GPP TS 38.212 for 4 antenna ports to illustrate how an indicated value may be associated to TPMI and corresponding layer information.

[0060] The UE, in block 350, determines that indicated layers of TPMI, 2ndTPMI, SRI and 2ndSRI are associated with indicated DMRS antenna ports with the following order {vi, V2, V3, V4 }, where vi, V2, V3, and V4 define indicated rank values. See the following examples.

[0061] TPMI: vi layers indicated via TPMI, where vi < Lmaxiwhere Lmaxiis maximum rank per 1st UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0062] 2ndTPMI: V2 layers indicated via 2ndTPMI, where V2 < Lmax2 where Lmax2 is maximum rank per 2ndUL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0063] SRI: V3 layers indicated via SRI, where V3 < LmaX3 where LmaX3 is maximum rank per 3rd UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0064] 2ndSRI: { V3. . . V4-I } layers, where V4 < LmaX4 where Lmax4 is maximum rank per 4th UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0065] If one or more of the above codepoint field(s) is / are not indicated as part of DCI, indicated DMRS antenna ports do not take into account layers which are not indicated as part of TPMI, 2ndTPMI, SRI and 2ndSRI.

[0066] To put this into context, the v's are layers which are implicitly indicated for codebook-based PUSCH as part of indicated TPMI values, e.g., as shown above. In other words, TPMI value indicates the same actual TPMI realization associated with some specific layer information. Similarly, for non-codebook based PUSCH, layer information is indicated implicitly in the indicated SRI value. In other words, when SRI value indicates >1 value then the value means that number of layers is >1. The Lmaxiand LlmaX2 are upper limits for the indicated values configured separately, e.g., by RRC. Similar statements can be made for LinaX3 and Llmax4.

[0067] In block 360, the UE determines that associations between SRI, 2ndSRI, TPMI, 2ndTPMI and the first, second, third and fourth UL SRS resource sets are configured in scheduling DCI, e.g., as follows:

[0068] 1) indicated codepoint value of TPMI associated with the first UL SRS resource set;

[0069] 2) indicated codepoint value of 2ndTPMI associated with the second UL SRS resource set;

[0070] 3) indicated codepoint value of SRI associated with the third UL SRS resource set; and

[0071] 4) indicated codepoint value of 2ndSRI associated with the fourth UL SRS resource set.

[0072] It is up to UE’s own implementation how different UL SRS resource sets are associated with physical TX antenna panels and / or antenna connectors. See block 370. As previously described, UL SRS resource sets are configured for the UE and prior PUS CH transmission, and UL SRS resource set are transmitted towards different TRPs. Based on this, information each TRP / or central entity communicates based on backhauling information exchange (see reference 660 of FIG. 6 as an example), will determine what TPMI or SRI is the most feasible one for a corresponding beam per pair link between UE and TRP. Then, based on this phase, different determined, e.g., TPMI values, are conveyed via backhauling to a scheduling TRP (referred to as the serving TRP in FIG. 6), which will then trigger DCI for simulations PUSCH transmission, where those determined TPMI values are indicated for the UE. Since the central entity (referred to below in reference to FIG. 6 as a central unit, CU, 700) has already configured the UE and performed the process described there, the central entity can determine the received data corresponding to the four different communication streams and perform processing based on these.

[0073] Turning to FIG. 4, this figure is a flowchart of a method performed by a UE when the UE is configured with non-codebook-based PUSCH and a parameter indicating a multi-panel scheme is set to a multiple number of panels. In block 410, the UE is configured with non-codebook-based PUSCH and a (e.g., higher layer) parameter set to a multiple number (e.g., >2 but <4) of panels (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SDMScheme’ or ‘4-panel-SFNScheme’) as well as a corresponding multiple (e.g., four) UL SRS resource sets are configured in uplink DCI with grant. The configuring of non-codebook-based PUS CH means that the configuration includes indication of non-codebook-based precoding for use for transmission of PUSCH.

[0074] In block 420, when the parameter is set to indicate a particular number of panels and SDM (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SDMScheme’), values of TPMI and 2ndTPMI codepoint fields of uplink scheduling DCI (referred to as control information for uplink), e.g., DCI format 0_l, indicate separately for the UE resource(s) be associated with layer(s) {v2,. , .,V3 -1 }, and {V3,...,V4-1 J, respectively. The values of V2 , V3, V4 indicate the number of layers that are associated with indicated number of resources for the codepoint fields in the following order: 2ndSRI, TPMI, 2ndTPMI. Note: The value of codepoint field SRI indicates for the resources associated with layers { 0, .. . ,vi - 1 } , where vi corresponds to the number of layers are associated with indicated number of resources for the codepoint field SRI.

[0075] For block 430, when the parameter is set to indicate a particular number of panels and SFN (e.g., multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel-SFNScheme’), values of TPMI and 2ndTPMI codepoint fields of uplink scheduling DCI (referred to as control information for uplink), e.g., DCI format 0_l, indicate separately for the UE resource(s), where the number of indicated resources as well as layer(s) is the same{0,...,vi -1 ], and {0,...,vi -1 ], respectively. Note: The value of codepoint field SRI indicates for the resources associated with layers [ 0,. . ,,vi -1 }, where vi corresponds to the number of layers that are associated with indicated number of resources for the codepoint field SRI. Moreover, the value of codepoint field 2ndSRI indicates the resources associated with layers { 0, . . . ,vi - 1 } .

[0076] The UE determines, in block 450, that indicated layers of SRI, 2ndSRI, TPMI, 2ndTPMI are associated with indicated DMRS antenna ports with the following order {vi, V2, V3, V4}, where vi, V2, V3, and V4 define indicated rank values. See the following examples.

[0077] TPMI: vi layers indicated via TPMI, where vi < Lmaxiwhere Lmaxiis maximum rank per 1st UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0078] 2ndTPMI: V2 layers indicated via 2ndTPMI, where V2 < Lmax2 where Lmax2 is maximum rank per 2ndUL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0079] SRI: V3 layers indicated via SRI, where V3 < Lmax3 where LmaX3 is maximum rank per 3rd UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0080] 2ndSRI: { V3. . . V4- 1 } layers, where V4 < LmaX4 where Lmax4 is maximum rank per 4th UL SRS resource set configured by higher layers.

[0081] If one or more of the above codepoint field(s) is / are not indicated as part of DCI, indicated DMRS antenna ports do not take into account layers which are not indicated as part of TPMI, 2ndTPMI, SRI and 2ndSRI.

[0082] The UE determines, in block 460, that associations between SRI, 2ndSRI, TPMI, 2ndTPMI and the first , second, third and fourth UL SRS resource sets are configured in scheduling DCI, e.g., as follows:

[0083] 1) indicated codepoint value of TPMI associated with the first UL SRS resource set;

[0084] 2) indicated codepoint value of 2ndTPMI associated with the second UL SRS resource set;

[0085] 3) indicated codepoint value of SRI associated with the third UL SRS resource set; and

[0086] 4) indicated codepoint value of 2ndSRI associated with the fourth UL SRS resource set.

[0087] It is up, in block 470, to UE’s own implementation how different UL SRS resource sets are associated with physical TX antenna panels and / or antenna connectors.

[0088] Other examples are as follows. In one embodiment, when the UE is configured with simultaneous multi-panel SDM or SFN based PUSCH transmission with four TCI states, the network / gNB can repurpose existing codepoint fields of uplink DCI with data grant (e.g., DCI format 0_l) such that SRI and 2ndSRI codepoint fields indicate precoding and number of layer information for codebook-based simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission.

[0089] In one embodiment, when the UE is configured with simultaneous multi-panel SDM or SFN based PUSCH transmission with four different TCI states, the network / gNB can repurpose existing codepoint fields of uplink DCI with data grant (e.g., DCI format 0_l) such that TPMI and 2ndTPMI codepoint fields indicate SRS resources and layer information for non- codebook-based simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission.

[0090] In one implementation example, the UE reports capability for simultaneous enhanced multi-panel PUSCH transmission with four TX antenna panels, where one or more information elements can be associated to indicate simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission capability for SDM and / or SFN with four antenna panels.

[0091] In another implementation example, the UE is configured with four UL SRS resource sets with usage of codebook where each set is configured with one UL SRS resource with N-antenna ports, where the value of N is the same in each set.

[0092] In another implementation example, the UE is configured with four UL SRS resource sets with usage of non-codebook transmission where each set is configured with one or more UL SRS resources with single antenna, where the number of single antenna resources is assumed to be same in each set.

[0093] FIG. 5 shows an example of simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission with four TRPs with four antenna panels in an exemplary embodiment. The left-hand side shows configurations 520-1, 520-2, 520-3, and 520-4. With these configurations 520, the UE 10 has been configured with multiple UL SRS resource sets: (1) for configuration 520-1, SRS resource set#O 510-0 and SRI#1 530-1 with 4-AP SRS resource, used with PUSCH 120-1 on antenna panel 110-1 with four antenna ports (4-AP); (2) for configuration 520-2, SRS resource set#l 510-1 and SRI#2 530-2 with 4-AP SRS resource, used with PUSCH 120-2 on antenna panel 110- 2 with 4-AP; (3) for configuration 520-3, SRS resource set#2 510-2 and SRI#3 530-3 with 4-AP SRS resource, used with PUSCH 120-3 on antenna panel 110-3 with 4-AP; and (4) for configuration 520-4, SRS resource set#3 510-3 and SRI#4 530-4 with 4-AP SRS resource, used with PUSCH 120-4 on antenna panel 110-4 with 4-AP. Each of these has a corresponding followUnifiedTCIstateSRS-rl7 information element. These information elements provide one- to-one mapping between TCI codepoints 220 and states and SRS resource sets 510. See, e.g., blocks 360 of FIG. 3 and 460 of FIG. 4 and corresponding text. It is noted that the number of antenna ports used in this example is four, but this is just an example of 4-AP usage. In principle, the number of ports can be any number, as this is up to UE capability.

[0094] As shown, the UE 10 can be scheduled via S-DCI to transmit simultaneously precoded PUSCH transmission with rank 8 (with two codewords) with four TRPs 70 as well as four antenna panels. The UE has been configured with multiple UL SRS resource sets (e.g., twoor more ) with a corresponding TCI state flag. In other words, when PUSCH transmission is triggered via S-DCI with the assumption of an indicated TCI codepoint (e.g., indicated via DL DCI format), the UE has the understanding based on UL SRS resource set configuration which of TCI states are to be applied for simultaneous PUSCH transmission for each of antenna panels. Here, the indicated codepoint includes the following activated uplink TCI-states: {TCI-state#l 220-1, TCI-state#2 220-2, TCI-state#5 220-3, TCI-state#8 220-4} . Furthermore, it is assumed that a serving / scheduling TRP (e.g., TRP1 70-1 using PDCCH) has triggered / configured the UE to transmit four different UL SRS resource sets 510 with corresponding resources with usage ‘codebook’ (codebook-based PUSCH is used) towards four different TRPs 70 based on which a network can determine its precoding and layer information for each TRP-specific PUSCH transmissions.

[0095] When the higher layer parameter multipanelScheme is set to ‘4-panel- SDMScheme’ in PUSCH-config and four SRS resource sets 510 are configured in, e.g., srs- ResourceSetToAddModList or srs-ResourceSetToAddModListDCLO-2 with higher layer parameter usage in SRS-ResourceSet set to 'codebook1, two SRI(s), and two TPMI(s) are given by the DCI fields of two SRS resource indicators and two precoding information and number of layers. The UE assumes that the UE is configured with four periodic / semi-persistent / aperiodic UL SRS resource sets 510 with only one 4-AP UL SRS resource in each set (i.e., all sets have equivalent number of UL SRS antenna ports with only one resource in each set). The UE assumes that indicated codepoints, i.e., SRI, 2nd SRI, are repurposed for indicating 3rd TPMI and 4th TPMI being associated with 3rd and 4th UL SRS resource set, respectively. Furthermore, the UE shall assume that indicated codepoints, i.e., SRI, 2nd SRI, TPMI and 1st TPMI are associated with third UL SRS resource set, fourth UL SRS resource set, 1st UL SRS resource set, and 2nd UL SRS resource set configured into triggering DCI (e.g., format 0_l or 0_2). Furthermore, due to the aforementioned association, the UE shall assume that resource sets are configured only with single N-AP SRS resource, where N defines the number of SRS antenna ports. The UE shall assume that the first TPMI is used to indicate the precoder to be applied over layers { 0. . . v 1 - 1 } , where v 1 is the number of layers indicated by the first TPMI

[0096] Referring to FIG. 6, this figure is a signaling diagram illustrating simultaneous multi-panel PUSCH transmission in an exemplary embodiment. This figure involves a singleentity that controls the transmission and reception of PUSCH and corresponding information and uses the received PUSCH and corresponding SRS. In this example, the single entity is a network element referred to herein as a central unit (CU), which is a 5G term. For instance, a gNB (a network element that is a base station) may be further split into a gNB-Central Unit (gNB-CU) and one or more gNB-Distributed Unit(s) (gNB-DU), linked by the Fl interface. In this example, the TRPs 70 may be considered to be DUs, although this is merely one example and other examples are possible, such as remote radio heads (in LTE terminology). The term “CU” is used to reference a central processing point, is not meant to be limiting, and other network elements that perform the same or similar functions may be used.

[0097] The signaling diagram of FIG. 6 has signaling between a UE 10, a serving TRP 70-1, a CU 700, and other TRPs 70-2, 70-3, and 70-4. The CU 700, e.g., via the serving TRP 70-1, configures the UE 10 with configuration from 310 / 320 / 330 / 340 or 410 / 420 / 430. This occurs in block 610 . The UE 10 in block 620 assigns codebook-based or non-codebook-based parameters for SDN / SFN based PUSCH, and in block 630 assigns SRS resource sets and corresponding configuration to individual panels per the received configuration.

[0098] In block 632, the UE 10 transmits UL SRS resources associated with four different UL SRS resource sets towards the TRPs 70. Reference 631 indicates that each of the TRPs 70 receive UL SRS resources. Reference 633 indicates that different TRPs 70 convey their received SRS resources to the central processing unit, in this example the CU 700. In response, the CU 700 determines in block 635, using SRS resource sets and corresponding configuration, precoding and layer information for TRP-specific PUSCH transmissions.

[0099] Then, the serving TRP 70-1 transmits (block 638) using, e.g., PDCCH (i.e., uplink DCI) where proposed DCI codepoint fields are indicated and reception of the same triggers the PUSCH transmission by the UE 10. That is, the network schedules PUSCH transmission by indicating UL SRS resource sets and resources and TPMI values as indicated previously. It is noted that both 310-340 and 410-430 may be performed via RRC signaling. Although this is illustrated via block 610 and could signaled in a single time instance, this configuration may also be separated into multiple transmission time instants. It is simply assumed herein that steps 310-340 and 410-430 occur before step 638.

[0100] In block 640, in response to receiving in block 638, the UE 10 is triggered and transmits PUSCH simultaneously via multiple panels by using proposed precoder and layer information for codebook-based PUSCH by using existing precoder and layer information codepoint fields (e.g., two different) as well as SRI codepoint fields for precoder and layer information indication (e.g., two different). Similarly for non-codebook based PUSCH, precoder and layer information codepoint fields (e.g., two) are used to indicate one or more single antenna port SRS resources (==layers) and, e.g., two SRI codepoints for the same purpose. The one or more single antenna port SRS resources are equivalent to the number of layers, which is what the “==layers” indicates. In block 650, the TRPs 70-1, 70-2, 70-3, and 70-4 receive the PUSCH configured as per the configuration. Reference 660 indicates that the TRPs 70-1, 70-2, 70-3, and 70-4 perform backhaul communication so the CU 700 receives information from the PUSCHs. In block 670, the CU 700 performs decoding of channel decoding of one or more PUSCH codewords that are associated with layers. The decoding which may include demodulation (i.e., transformation of received symbols to soft-bit level information associated with different layers for channel decoding purposes) and decoding of channel coding. It is also possible that TRPs will perform demodulation and the CU 700 performs only channel decoding. The CU 700 could then use the results of block 670 as is known in this technology area.

[0101] Turning to FIG. 7, this figure shows a block diagram of one possible and nonlimiting example of a cellular network 1 that is connected to a user equipment (UE) 10. Multiple network elements are shown in the cellular network of FIG. 7: a radio access network (RAN) 735; and a core network 90. The RAN 735 includes TRPs 70-1, 70-2, 70-3, and 70-4, and CU 700.

[0102] In FIG. 7, a user equipment (UE) 10 is in wireless communication via radio link 11 with the TRPS 70, and through these to the CU 700, of the cellular network 1. A UE 10 is a wireless communication device, such as a mobile device, that is configured to access a cellular network. The UE 10 is illustrated with one or more antennas 28, which are the four antenna panels 110-1 through 110-4. The ellipses 2 indicate there could be multiple UEs 10 in wireless communication via radio links with the TRP 70. The UE 10 includes one or more processors 13, one or more memories 15, and other circuitry 16. The other circuitry 16 includes one or more receivers (Rx(s)) 17 and one or more transmitters (Tx(s)) 18. A program 12 is used to cause theUE 10 to perform the operations described herein. For a UE 10, the other circuitry 16 could include circuitry such as for user interface elements (not shown) like a display.

[0103] The TRP 70, as a network element of the cellular network 1, provides the UE 10 access to cellular network 1, e.g., via the CU 700 and to the data network 91 via the core network 90 (e.g., via a user plane function (UPF) of the core network 90). The TRP 70 is illustrated as having one or more antennas 58. The TRP 70 includes one or more processors 73, one or more memories 75, and other circuitry 76. The other circuitry 76 includes one or more receivers (Rx(s)) 77 and one or more transmitters (Tx(s)) 78. A program 72 is used to cause the TRP 70 to perform the operations described herein. Two or more TRP 70 communicate using, e.g., backhaul link(s) 79. The backhaul link(s) 79 may be wired or wireless or both.

[0104] It is noted that the TRP 70 may instead be implemented via other wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi (a wireless networking protocol that devices use to communicate without direct cable connections). In the case of Wi-Fi, the link 11 could be characterized as a wireless link.

[0105] The CU 700, as a network element of the cellular network 1, controls the operations described herein on the network side and acts as a central processing point for the PUSCH and corresponding SRS. The CU 700 also, via the TRPs70, provides the UE 10 access to cellular network 1, e.g., via the data network 91 and further via the core network 90 (e.g., via a user plane function (UPF) of the core network 90). The CU 700 includes one or more processors 730, one or more memories 750, and other circuitry 760. The other circuitry 760 includes one or more receivers (Rx(s)) 770 and one or more transmitters (Tx(s)) 780. A program 720 is used to cause the CU 700 to perform the operations described herein.

[0106] The cellular network 1 may include a core network 90, as a third illustrated element or elements, that may include core network functionality, and which provide connectivity via a link or links 81 with a data network 91, such as a telephone network and / or a data communications network (e.g., the Internet). The core network 90 includes one or more processors 93, one or more memories 95, and other circuitry 96. The other circuitry 96 includes one or more receivers (Rx(s)) 97 and one or more transmitters (Tx(s)) 98. A program 92 is used to cause the core network 90 to perform the operations described herein.

[0107] The core network 90 could be a 5GC (5G core network). The core network 90 can implement or comprise multiple network functions (NF(s)) 99, and the program 92 may comprise one or more of the NFs 99. A 5G core network may use hardware such as memory and processors and a virtualization layer. It could be a single standalone computing system, a distributed computing system, or a cloud computing system. The NFs 99, as network elements, of the core network could be containers or virtual machines running on the hardware of the computing system(s) making up the core network 90.

[0108] Core network functionality for 5G may include access and mobility management functionality that is provided by a network function 99 such as an access and mobility management function (AMF(s)), session management functionality that is provided by a network function such as a session management function (SMF). Core network functionality for access and mobility management in an LTE (Long Term Evolution) network may be provided by an MME (Mobility Management Entity) and / or SGW (Serving Gateway) functionality, which routes data to the data network. Many others are possible, as illustrated by the examples in FIG. 7: AMF; SMF; MME; SGW; GMLC (Gateway Mobile Location Center); LMFs (Location Management Functions); UDM (Unified Data Management) / UDR (Unified Data Repository); NRF (Network Repository Function); and / or E-SMLC (Evolved Serving Mobile Location Center). These are merely exemplary core network functionality that may be provided by the core network 90, and note that both 5G and LTE core network functionality might be provided by the core network 90. The CU 700 is coupled via a link 31 to the core network 90. The CU 700 and the core network 90 may include an NG (Next Generation) interface for 5G, or an S 1 interface for LTE, or other suitable interface for other radio access technologies for communicating via the link 31.

[0109] In the data network 91, there is a computer-readable medium 94. The computer-readable medium 94 contains instructions that, when downloaded and installed into the memories 15, 75, 750, or 95 of the corresponding UE 10, TRPs 70, CU 700, and / or core network element(s) 90, and executed by processor(s) 13, 73, 730, or 93, cause the respective device to perform corresponding actions described herein. The computer-readable medium 94 may be implemented in other forms, such as via a compact disc or memory stick.

[0110] The programs 12, 72, 720, and 92 contain instructions stored by corresponding one or more memories 15, 75, 750, or 95. These instructions, when executed by the corresponding one or more processors 13, 73, 730, or 93, cause the corresponding apparatus 10, 70, 700, or 90, to perform the operations described herein. The computer readable memories 15, 75, 750, or 95 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment and may be implemented using any suitable data storage technology, such as semiconductor-based memory devices, flash memory, firmware, magnetic memory devices and systems, optical memory devices and systems, fixed memory and removable memory. The computer readable memories 15, 75,750, and 95 may be means for performing storage functions. The processors 13, 73, 730, and 93, may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment, and may include one or more of general-purpose computers, special purpose computers, microprocessors, digital signal processors (DSPs) and processors based on a multi-core processor architecture, as non-limiting examples. The processors 13, 73, 730, and 93 may be means for causing their respective apparatus to perform functions, such as those described herein.

[0111] The receivers 17, 77, 770, and 97, and the transmitters 18, 78, 780, and 98 may implement wired or wireless interfaces. The receivers and transmitters may be grouped together as transceivers.

[0112] The cellular network 1 may implement network virtualization, which is the process of combining hardware and software network resources and network functionality into a single, software-based administrative entity, a virtual network. Network virtualization involves platform virtualization, often combined with resource virtualization.
