AI Technical Summary
Existing SMA actuator assemblies for optical components lack effective positional control along certain axes, leading to reduced performance and impaired rotation control due to unknown or changing distances between force application points and rotation axes.
The actuator assembly incorporates a configuration of SMA actuating units that apply forces to opposite sides of a movable part, allowing for controlled rotation about a primary axis and positional control along perpendicular axes, with force components aligned to maintain consistent rotation per unit actuation.
This configuration enhances the actuator assembly's performance by ensuring that all actuation is effectively converted into rotation, maintaining a consistent range of useful movement and improving control over rotational movements.

Abstract
Description
[0001] ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
[0002] Field
[0003] The present application relates to an actuator assembly comprising a plurality of SMA (shape memory alloy) actuating units suitable for e.g. moving an optical component (such as a camera module comprising an image sensor and / or a lens assembly) relative to a support structure.
[0004] Background
[0005] The present application relates to an SMA actuator. SMA actuators have various applications and, for example, can be used to provide optical image stabilisation (OIS) in compact cameras for smartphones and other electronic devices. For instance, WO 2011 / 104518 Al describes an actuator with eight SMA wires which is able to rotate a camera module (including a set of lenses and an image sensor) about three perpendicular axes so as to provide OIS. WO 2021 / 209770 Al describes an actuator with e.g. four SMA wires and a bearing arrangement which is able to rotate a camera module about two axes perpendicular to a primary axis.
[0006] Summary
[0007] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an actuator assembly comprising: a first part, with a first primary axis defined with reference to the first part; a second part that is movable relative to the first part, with a second primary axis defined with reference to the second part, a first axis that is perpendicular to the first primary axis and that extends through first and second sides of the second part, and a second axis that is perpendicular to the first primary axis and the first axis; a bearing arrangement that allows the second part to rotate relative to the first part about the first axis and that further allows the second part to move relative to the first part at least partly along the second axis and / or to rotate relative to the first part about the first primary axis; and first and second SMA (shape memory alloy) actuating units configured to apply respective first and second forces to the first side of the second part; and third and fourth SMA actuating units configured to apply respective third and fourth forces to the second side of the second part; wherein the first and second forces are capable of rotating the second part relative to the first part in a first sense about the first axis, the third and fourth forces are capable of rotating the second part relative to the first part in a second, opposite sense about the first axis, each of the first and third forces has a (force) component in a first direction along a second axis, and each of the second and fourth forces has a (force) component in a second, opposite direction along the second axis. Thus, the actuator assembly is of a type in which the actuating units are configured to rotate the second (movable) part about a rotation axis by applying forces to the side of the second part through which the rotation axis extends. Such a configuration can be advantageous because it enables the forces to be applied at positions relatively close to the rotation axis and hence the amount of rotation per unit actuation to be relatively large.
[0008] The first and second forces may each and / or together be capable of rotating the second part relative to the first part in the first sense about the first axis. The third and fourth forces may each and / or together be capable of rotating the second part relative to the first part in the second, opposite sense about the first axis.
[0009] Moreover, in this actuator assembly, the actuating units can be actuated so that together they produce a desired amount of rotation about the first axis, while also acting at least partly in opposite directions along the second axis and thus enabling positional control along the second axis. This can be particularly important in actuator assemblies in which the bearing arrangement does not provide positional control along the second axis, for example because the bearing arrangement is configured as described herein to allow rotation of the second part about the primary axis. Without such positional control, the performance of the actuator assembly may be negatively affected. For example, not all of the actuation may be converted into rotation and so the range of useful movement may be reduced. Also, the ability to control the rotation may be impaired or lost if the distances between the first and second forces and the rotation axis (and hence the amount of rotation per unit actuation) are unknown and / or changing.
[0010] Optionally, each of the first, second, third and / or fourth forces is substantially parallel to the second axis.
[0011] Optionally, each of the first, second, third and / or fourth forces has a (force) component in a first direction (i.e. in the same direction) along the first primary axis.
[0012] Optionally, the (force) component(s) in the first direction along the first primary axis load the bearing arrangement (e.g. throughout the range of movement of the second part relative to the first part). Optionally, the first and second forces are applied at respective first and second points on the first side, and wherein the first and second points have substantially the same position along the second axis as the point at which the first axis crosses the first side.
[0013] Optionally, the third and fourth forces are applied at respective third and fourth points on the second side, and wherein the third and fourth points have substantially the same position along the second axis as the point at which the first axis crosses the second side.
[0014] Optionally, the points at which the first and second forces are applied to the second part remain equally spaced from the first axis throughout the range of rotational movement of the second part relative to the first part (e.g. the range of rotational movement the second part is configured to be moved within relative the first part by the first, second, third and fourth SMA actuating units).
[0015] Optionally, the points at which the third and fourth forces are applied to the second part remain equally spaced from the first axis throughout the range of rotational movement of the second part relative to the first part (e.g. the range of rotational movement the second part is configured to be moved within relative the first part by the first, second, third and fourth SMA actuating units).
[0016] Optionally, the distances between the first axis and the points at which the first and second forces are applied to the second part remain substantially constant throughout the range of rotational movement of the second part relative to the first part (e.g. the range of rotational movement the second part is configured to be moved within relative the first part by the first, second, third and fourth SMA actuating units). Thus, the amount of rotation per unit actuation remains substantially constant and so the actuating units can be more effectively controlled.
[0017] Optionally, the distances between the first axis and the points at which the third and fourth forces are applied to the second part remain substantially constant throughout the range of rotational movement of the second part relative to the first part (e.g. the range of rotational movement the second part is configured to be moved within relative the first part by the first, second, third and fourth SMA actuating units). Thus, the amount of rotation per unit actuation remains substantially constant and so the actuating units can be more effectively controlled. The above-mentioned 'range of rotational movement' may refer to the range of rotation that the second part is configured to rotate within, relative to the first part, about the first axis and, optionally, about the first primary axis.
[0018] Optionally, the bearing arrangement comprises a first bearing element positioned on (i.e. on or near to) the first side of the second part and a second bearing element positioned on (i.e. on or near to) the second side of the second part.
[0019] Optionally, each bearing element is a rolling element (e.g. a ball bearing) which interacts with bearing surfaces associated with the first and second parts so as to guide the rotation of the second part relative to the first part about the first axis and to guide the movement of the second part relative to the first part at least partly along the second axis and / or the rotation of the second part relative to the first part about the first primary axis.

[0182] Other variations
[0183] It will be appreciated that there may be many other variations of the above-described examples. SMA
[0184] The above-described SMA actuator assemblies comprise at least one SMA element. The term 'shape memory alloy (SMA) element' may refer to any element comprising SMA. The SMA element may be described as an SMA wire. The SMA element may have any shape that is suitable for the purposes described herein. The SMA element may be elongate and may have a round cross section or any other shape cross section. The cross section may vary along the length of the SMA element. The SMA element might have a relatively complex shape such as a helical spring. It is also possible that the length of the SMA element (however defined) may be similar to one or more of its other dimensions. The SMA element may be sheet-like, and such a sheet may be planar or non-planar. The SMA element may be pliant or, in other words, flexible. In some examples, when connected in a straight line between two components, the SMA element can apply only a tensile force which urges the two components together. In other examples, the SMA element may be bent around a component and can apply a force to the component as the SMA element tends to straighten under tension. The SMA element may be beam-like or rigid and may be able to apply different (e.g. non- tensile) forces to elements. The SMA element may or may not include material(s) and / or component(s) that are not SMA. For example, the SMA element may comprise a core of SMA and a coating of non-SMA material. Unless the context requires otherwise, the term 'SMA element' may refer to any configuration of SMA material acting as a single actuating element which, for example, can be individually controlled to produce a force on an element. For example, the SMA element may comprise two or more portions of SMA material that are arranged mechanically in parallel and / or in series. In some arrangements, the SMA element may be part of a larger SMA element. Such a larger SMA element might comprise two or more parts that are individually controllable, thereby forming two or more SMA elements. The SMA element may comprise an SMA wire, SMA foil, SMA film or any other configuration of SMA material. The SMA element may be manufactured using any suitable method, for example by a method involving drawing, rolling, deposition, sintering or powder fusion. The SMA element may exhibit any shape memory effect, e.g. a thermal shape memory effect or a magnetic shape memory effect, and may be controlled in any suitable way, e.g. by Joule heating, another heating technique or by applying a magnetic field.
