AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Massive MIMO systems face challenges in reducing energy/power consumption due to high peak capacity needs, and existing antenna muting techniques result in asymmetric beamforming gain and unsatisfactory muting granularity.

Method used

The proposed solution involves constructing a mapping between traffic load thresholds and antenna elements to be muted by dividing the antenna array into four symmetric quadrants and determining which elements to mute based on traffic load, with mirroring applied to other quadrants.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces traffic load quantization error, improves energy/power efficiency, and achieves enhanced sidelobe suppression, resulting in a more efficient and effective massive MIMO system.

Description

DEVICES, METHODS, APPARATUSES, AND COMPUTER READABLE MEDIA FOR MASSIVE MULTIPLE INPUT MULTIPLE OUTPUTTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments relate to devices, methods, apparatuses, and computer readable media for massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) .BACKGROUND

[0002] Massive MIMO benefits significantly from employing arrays with a large number of antennas, which may also result in a significant increase of energy / power consumption. Since traffic load varies significantly over time and space, the high peak capacity provided by the massive MIMO is not always needed. Antenna muting is a technology to scale down the antenna array size when the traffic load is low, so as to reduce energy / power consumption. Assuming that an antenna array in the massive MIMO is an array of (M, N, P) , where M is the row number, N is the column number, and P is the polarization number, if the granularity for antenna muting is upper or lower half array, when one of half array is muted under low traffic load, it will change the vertical beam width and make the beamforming gain asymmetrically. If the granularity for antenna muting is per row or per column, since the traffic load quantization error is up to half of the granularity, the muting granularity is still unsatisfactory.SUMMARY

[0003] A brief summary of exemplary embodiments is provided below to provide basic understanding of some aspects of various embodiments. It should be noted that this summary is not intended to identify key features of essential elements or define scopes of the embodiments, and its sole purpose is to introduce some concepts in a simplified form as a preamble for a more detailed description provided below.

[0004] In a first aspect, disclosed is a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output. The communication device may include at least one processor and at least one memory. The at least one memory may store instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, may cause the communication device at least to perform: constructing a mapping  between thresholds for traffic load and antenna elements to be muted, wherein the mapping is constructed in a manner of: dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; determining to mute one or more antenna elements in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and determining to mute antenna elements in other three quadrants which are mirrored to the one or more antenna elements determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0005] In a second aspect, disclosed is a method performed by a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output. The method may comprise: constructing a mapping between thresholds for traffic load and antenna elements to be muted, wherein the mapping is constructed in a manner of: dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; determining to mute one or more antenna elements in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and determining to mute antenna elements in other three quadrants which are mirrored to the one or more antenna elements determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0006] In a third aspect, disclosed is an apparatus. The apparatus as a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output may comprise: means for constructing a mapping between thresholds for traffic load and antenna elements to be muted, wherein the mapping is constructed in a manner of: dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; determining to mute one or more antenna elements in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and determining to mute antenna elements in other three quadrants which are mirrored to the one or more antenna elements determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0007] In a fourth aspect, a computer readable medium is disclosed. The computer readable medium may comprise program instructions that, when executed by a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output, may cause the communication device at least to perform: constructing a mapping between thresholds for traffic load and antenna elements to be muted, wherein the mapping is constructed in a manner of: dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; determining to mute one or more antenna elements in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and determining to mute antenna elements in other three quadrants which are  mirrored to the one or more antenna elements determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0008] Other features and advantages of the example embodiments of the present disclosure will also be apparent from the following description of specific embodiments when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, by way of example, the principles of example embodiments of the present disclosure.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0021] Throughout the drawings, same or similar reference numbers indicate same or similar elements. A repetitive description on the same elements would be omitted.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0022] Herein below, some example embodiments are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The following description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known circuits, techniques and components are shown in block diagram form to avoid obscuring the described concepts and features.

[0023] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for muting antenna elements (AEs) in the massive MIMO. According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the traffic load quantization error can be further reduced, and energy / power efficiency can be improved. Moreover, the example embodiments of the present disclosure may realize an improved sidelobe suppression (SLS) . Array or antenna array in the example embodiments of the present disclosure may also be referred as to panel or antenna panel. One AE in the example embodiments of the present disclosure in the present disclosure refers to antenna (s) of one transceiver (TRX) , and in the example embodiments of the present disclosure in the present disclosure, two co-located antennas differently polarized may be referred to as one AE. Therefore, an antenna array of (M, N, P) may be considered as an antenna array of (M, N) .

[0024] The example embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed by a communication device using a massive MIMO antenna array. The communication device may be on the network side, for example, a network device functioning as a base station (BS) . The BS may be for example, an evolved node B (eNB) , a next generation node B (gNB) , a non-terrestrial network (NTN) device e.g. a satellite, a high altitude platform station (HAPS) , etc. The communication device may also be a user equipment (UE) .

[0025] FIG. 1 shows an exemplary scenario to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. Referring to the FIG. 1, the abscissa axis may represent time, and the vertical axis may represent the traffic load and the corresponding transmit (Tx) power.  As is shown in the FIG. 1, the nominal power of the communication device is divided into S parts, which may be referred to as S steps, i.e. steps 1, 2, …, S-3, S-2, S-1, S. The nominal power may also be regarded as step 0, and the lower limit of the step S is 0. The S steps may have identical length or have different lengths. In case of different lengths, the length of a step may be integral multiple the length of another step. Corresponding to S steps, the FIG. 1 shows thresholds H1, …, HS for traffic load. The traffic load between Hi and Hi-1 may require the Tx power of step i, and the full buffer traffic load of the communication device requires the nominal power and may be regarded as H0. When the traffic load is 0 and equals to HS, the required Tx power is 0. Thus, the full buffer traffic load is divided into S levels by the traffic load thresholds H1, …, HS, and the S traffic load levels correspond to the required S steps of Tx power. The curve is an example of the traffic load and the required Tx power.

[0026] The communication device may perform AE muting on the antenna array according to the traffic load. The traffic load is divided into S levels, and thus the AE muting process may be referred to as S-step muting. For example, the communication device may construct a mapping between the thresholds H1, …, HS for traffic load and AEs to be muted. For example, the communication device may map thresholds H1, …, HS to AE index set Q1, …, QS, respectively. Then the communication device may determine the measured traffic load falling between which thresholds, and mute AE (s) with corresponding index / indices according to the thresholds between which the measured traffic load falls.

[0027] FIG. 2 shows an exemplary flowchart 200 for muting AEs in the massive MIMO according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The exemplary flowchart 200 may be performed by the communication device. In a case where the communication device is a network device, the communication device may be for example a layer 3 (L3) operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) entity.

[0028] Referring to the FIG. 2, in an operation 210, the communication device may measure the traffic load. Then, in an operation 220, the communication device may determine the thresholds for traffic load between which the measured traffic load falls. In some embodiments, in a case where the measured traffic load falls between the traffic load thresholds for a duration longer than a time threshold, the communication device determines that the measured traffic load falls between the traffic load thresholds. The time threshold may be determined by the  communication device or specified in a specification.

[0029] Assuming that the measured traffic load is lower than or equals to Hi-1 and higher than Hi, in an operation 230, the communication device may mute AE (s) with index / indices in AE index set Qi-1. For example, the L3 OAM may send the AE index set Qi-1 to layer 2 (L2) radio unit (RU) module to enable muting. Assuming that in the antenna array, the AE index groups are J1, J2, …, JS corresponding to S Tx power steps 1, 2, …, S, corresponding to Tx power step i, the AEs of index group Ji-1 are to be muted, and corresponding to Tx power =0, the AEs of index group JS are to be muted. That is, the AE index set Qi-1 includes J1, J2, ..., Ji-1, i.e. Qi-1= [J1, J2, …, Ji-1] .

[0030] Referring back to the FIG. 1, if the measured traffic load lower than or equals to H0 and higher than H1, the AEs of index group J0 is to be muted, which means no AE is to be muted because there is no index group J0. If the measured traffic load lower than or equals to HS-1 and higher than HS, the AEs of index group J1, J2, …, JS-1 are to be muted, i.e. the AEs with indices in QS-1 are to be muted, and the AEs of index group JS is still in use. If the measured traffic load equals to HS, which means no traffic load, the AEs with indices in QS are to be muted, i.e. all AEs in the array are muted.

[0031] Following example embodiments provide a manner in which the mapping between thresholds for traffic load and antenna elements to be muted may be constructed.

[0032] FIG. 3 shows an exemplary antenna array to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. Assuming that the antenna array shown in the FIG. 3, is an array of (M, N) , where M is the row number, and N is the column number. Because in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, two polarizations are co-processed in muting and thus do not need to be considered separately. So, in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, without specific description to the contrary, one AE in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, e.g. represented by one circle in the FIG. 3, may be actually two co-located antennas differently polarized.

[0033] The communication device may divide the antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants, e.g. the quadrant 1, the quadrant 2, the quadrant 3, and the quadrant 4 shown in the FIG. 3. Assuming that (m, n) is the coordinate of the AE, where 0 <= m <M and 0 <= n< N, and (0, 0) is the coordinate of the bottom  left AE, because of the horizontal and vertical symmetry, one quadrant, e.g. the bottom left quadrant 1, where 0 <= m <M / 2 and 0 <= n< N / 2, may be first searched in muting, then the AE to be muted in the quadrant 1 may be mirrored into the whole antenna array with symmetry. The AEs in the quadrant 1 may have indices 1, 2, …M*N / 4, and the indices correspond to the coordinates, respectively. The indices of AEs in other quadrants also correspond to the coordinates, respectively.

[0034] FIG. 4 shows an exemplary mirror relation according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. If the AE with coordinate (m, n) in the quadrant 1 is to be muted, the AE with coordinate (M-1-m, n) in the quadrant 2, the AE with coordinate (M-1-m,N-1-n) in the quadrant 3 and the AE with coordinate (m, N-1-n) in the quadrant 4, which are mirrored to the AE with coordinate (m, n) in the quadrant 1, are to be muted. Those skilled in the art may understand that the quadrant other than the quadrant 1 may be first searched in muting, and then the AE coordinate may be mirrored to the other three quadrants.

[0035] In some embodiments, in case of dividing the antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants, the communication device may determine the number of thresholds for traffic load based on the number of AEs in the antenna array divided by four. For example, the communication device may determine the number of traffic load thresholds S=M*N / 4. Thus the muting granularity may be one AE in a quadrant, i.e. four AEs in the antenna array. The muting granularity is much finer than one row or column.

[0036] In some embodiments, the communication device may divide the full buffer traffic load of the communication device into S traffic load levels by the S thresholds for traffic load and divide the nominal Tx power of the communication device into S Tx power steps. The S Tx power steps may correspond to the S traffic load levels and correspond to the AEs to be muted. For example, for a certain traffic load, the corresponding Tx power is required, and for the required Tx power, corresponding AEs may be muted. Thus the communication device may map the thresholds for traffic load to the AEs to be muted. The mapping between the thresholds H1, …, HS for traffic load and AEs to be muted may be constructed.

[0037] In some embodiments, the communication device may construct the mapping between the thresholds H1, …, HS for traffic load and AEs to be muted by an optimal-spread (OS) process. The mapping may be in a form of mapping table (MT) or a look up table (LUT) . Then, by  checking the MT or LUT, the communication device may mute corresponding AEs. The SLS is also considered during the construction of the mapping.

[0038] FIG. 5 shows an exemplary beam to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. According to 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technical report (TR) 37.842, a beam will consist of a mainlobe and several sidelobes. Sidelobe suppression means how much the lobes above / below the main lobe are lower than the main lobe maximum in decibels. Important in adjacent cell disturbance point of view. SLS in this report is defined in both horizontally and vertically (3D space) instead of in single direction horizontal or vertical only, so as to represent the 3D beamforming characteristics. The mainlobe is in the target direction of transmission, and the equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) is the largest gain of the Tx AE. The example embodiments of the present disclosure may achieve a maximum SLS in the AE muting.

[0039] FIG. 6 shows an exemplary neighboring relation according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. As is shown in the FIG. 6, in the quadrant 1, for an AE with coordinate (m,n) , the AE with coordinate (m+1, n) and the AE with coordinate (m, n+1) are neighbors. That is, in the quadrant 1, the up and right adjacent AEs are neighbors. The neighboring relation may be used in the OS process, which will be described later in detail.

[0040] FIG. 7 shows an exemplary flowchart 700 for the OS process according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to the FIG. 7, S is the traffic load threshold number and also the Tx power step number, and in some embodiments, S may be the number of AEs in the quadrant 1. i represents the Tx power step i currently in the OS process, G represents the muted AE coordinate set of the AE array quadrant 1, and F represents the muted AE coordinate set of the whole antenna array, including the four quadrants.

[0041] Initially, in an operation 710, the G is empty, i=2, and the OS process may start from the AE with coordinate (0, 0) . As is explained with the FIG. 1 and the FIG. 2, as an option, in the case of Tx power step 1, the communication device may determine not to mute an AE. So for the quadrant 1, the communication device may sequentially determine the AE to be muted in the case of Tx power step 2, 3, …, S, and finally determine the last AE to be muted in the case of no traffic load, i.e. required Tx power = 0.

[0042] In an operation 720, the communication device may determine whether i <= S. If i <= S ( “Yes” prong of the operation 720) , and in an operation 730, the communication device may return coordinate (m, n) with the maximum SLS if muting AEs of G and (m, n) , where (m, n) is one of neighbor AEs of G. That is, determining to mute the AE (s) in the quadrant 1 may be performed in a manner of after determining to mute at least one AE, determining to mute one neighbor AE of the at least one AE if the one neighbor AE and the at least one AE generate the maximum sidelobe. For example, among the respective neighbor AE of each AE in G, (m, n) and the AEs in G may generate the maximum sidelobe.

[0043] The neighbor AE has been explained with respect to the FIG. 6. In the operation 720, the neighbor AEs of all the AEs in G may be considered. For example, the SLS calculation may be performed on the AEs in G plus the neighbor AEs of G in a one by one manner, and one neighbor AE of G is selected if the maximum SLS is calculated on the AEs in G plus the one neighbor AE.

[0044] The SLS calculation may be a general method defined in e.g. Balanis, C. A. Antenna Theory, Analysis and Design, Chapter 2, sec 2.3-2.6, Wiley. In this report the SLS is calculated by e.g. Matlab Antenna Toolbox. The SLS can also be calculated by other language or tools without losing generality.

[0045] Then, in an operation 740, the communication device may include the coordinate (m, n) into G. Then the communication device may increase i by one and perform the operation 720 again. When i > S ( “No” prong of the operation 720) , in an operation 750, the communication device may include the last AE left unmuted into G, which would be muted when required Tx power = 0. Thus the set G includes the AE coordinates in the quadrant 1, which may be sequentially muted when the Tx power varies from the nominal power to 0.

[0046] Then, in an operation 760, the communication device may mirror the coordinates in G from the quadrant 1 to the other three quadrants. The mirror has been explained with respect to the FIG. 4. Thus, the communication device may complete the full array coordinate set F.

[0047] By transforming the coordinates in F into respective AE indices, the communication device may construct the mapping between the traffic load thresholds H1, …, HS and AEs to be muted.

[0048] In the mapping between the traffic load thresholds H1, …, HS and AEs to be muted, H1 may correspond to the indices of the AE muted in the case of Tx power step 2, Hi may correspond  to the indices of the muted AE in the case of Tx power step i+1…, and HS may correspond to the indices of the muted AE in the case of Tx power = 0. Thus, H1, …, HS may be mapped to the AE index sets Q1, …, QS, where Qi= [J1, J2, …, Ji] , i = 2, …, S, the AEs of index group Ji-1 are to be muted corresponding to the Tx power step i, and the AEs of index group JS are to be muted when Tx power = 0.

[0049] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, more traffic load thresholds / more Tx power steps generate finer muting granularity. Since two polarizations are co-processed and not considered separately, the array size can be mentioned as (M, N) , e.g. (8, 16) . Each AE may be modelled according to e.g. 3GPP TR 38.901 pattern, and the gain is set to 8 dBi without losing generality. Taking 128 (8, 16) array as an example, a comparison of the muting granularities between the muting by column or row and the muting according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure is shown in the following Table 1.

[0050] From left to right, the numbers in the Table 1 represent the numbers of muted AEs when the required Tx powers fall into the next lower Tx power steps and the far right numbers are the numbers of muted AEs when the required Tx powers are non-zero minimum Tx powers. The muting granularity in case of muting by column is 8, the muting granularity in case of muting by row is 16, and the muting granularity according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure is 4. It can be seen that, when the traffic loads are non-zero minimum, in case of muting by row or column, 16 or 8 AEs are still in use, and according to example embodiments of the present disclosure, only 4 AEs are in use.

[0051] Assuming that the nominal Tx powers for the three cases in the Table 1 are identical, the step range in case of muting by column or row is much larger than that in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, and the number of muted AEs per step in case of muting  by column or row is much larger than that in the example embodiments of the present disclosure. Because the traffic load is changing continuously, thus in case of muting by column or row the power consumption cannot change to the traffic load well enough. With finer muting granularity, the transmission power can match the traffic load with less gap. The traffic load quantization error can be further reduced, and energy / power efficiency can be improved.

[0052] The example embodiments of the present disclosure may also achieve a higher SLS level. Taking an array of M=8, N=16 as an example, to mute half array, the muted AE number is 64. By simulation, taking the full array as a baseline, where the beamforming gain is 29 dB and SLS is 13.4 dB, in case of muting by row, when half array is muted, the beamforming gain is 26 dB and SLS is 13.4 dB. By the OS process according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, when half array is muted, the beamforming gain is 26 dB and SLS is 23.3 dB, which means 9.9 dB gain.

[0053] Taking an array of M=4, N=8 as an example, to mute half array, the muted AE number is 16. By simulation, taking the full array as a baseline, where the beamforming gain is 23 dB and SLS is 13.5 dB, in case of muting by row, when half array is muted, the beamforming gain is 20 dB and SLS is 13.5 dB. By the OS process according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, when half array is muted, the beamforming gain is 20 dB and SLS is 17.8 dB, which means 4.3 dB gain.

[0054] The example embodiments of the present disclosure needs just a minor implementation cost. The OS process according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure can be calculated offline and be used by the communication device, e.g. a base station, by very small LUT, one table per RU type. Thus the implementation cost is minor.

[0055] FIG. 8A to FIG. 8D show an exemplary implementation according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The FIG. 8A to FIG. 8D show an example antenna array of M=4 and N=8, and show the array corresponding to four Tx power steps, respectively.

[0056] Index_q1 represent the muted AE index of the quadrant 1, which may be mirrored to indices in the other three quadrants. The FIG. 8A shows the array corresponding to e.g. the Tx power step 2 shown in the FIG. 1, where Index_q1 = [1] . The FIG. 8B shows the array corresponding to e.g. the Tx power step 3 shown in the FIG. 1, where Index_q1 = [1 5] . The FIG. 8C shows the array corresponding to e.g. the Tx power step 4 shown in the FIG. 1, where  Index_q1 = [1 5 9] . The FIG. 8D shows the array corresponding to e.g. the Tx power step 5 shown in the FIG. 1, where Index_q1 = [1 5 9 2] .

[0057] For the 4x8 array, there are totally 8 steps, and in i-th step there are i-1 index values for quadrant 1, so the LUT will contain 28 integer values in total for all 8 steps. Alternatively the LUT may include the last index to be muted when Tx power =0, and in this case the LUT will contain 32 integer values. This is very low payload for the communication device, especially for a BS, and such low payload allows for supporting a large number of RU types.

[0058] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the implementation is symmetric and does not change the AE spacing, so the beamforming algorithms, either grid of beam (GoB) or sounding reference signal (SRS) based beamforming, can easily be adapted to it.

[0059] FIG. 9 shows a flow chart illustrating an example method 900 for massive MIMO according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example method 900 may be performed for example by a communication device such as the communication device using the massive MIMO antenna array above mentioned. The communication device may be a network device functioning as a BS or a UE.

[0060] Referring to the FIG. 9, the example method 900 may comprise: an operation 910 of constructing a mapping between thresholds for traffic load and AEs to be muted, wherein the mapping may be constructed in a manner of: an operation 912 of dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; an operation 914 of determining to mute one or more AEs in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and an operation 916 of determining to mute AEs in other three quadrants which are mirrored to the one or more AEs determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0061] In some embodiments, the example method 900 may further include an operation of determining a number S of thresholds for traffic load based on the number of AEs in the antenna array divided by four.

[0062] In some embodiments, the construction of the mapping may include: dividing a full buffer traffic load of the communication device into S traffic load levels by the S thresholds for traffic load; dividing a nominal transmit power of the communication device into S transmit power steps corresponding to the S traffic load levels and corresponding to the AEs to be muted; and mapping the thresholds for traffic load to the AEs to be muted.

[0063] In some embodiments, the determining to mute the one or more AEs in the one quadrant may be performed in a manner of after determining to mute at least one AE, determining to mute one neighbor AE of the at least one AE if the one neighbor AE, among the respective neighbor AE of the at least one AE, and the at least one AE generate a maximum sidelobe.

[0064] In some embodiments, the mapping may be in a form of a LUT or a MT.

[0065] In some embodiments, the communication device may be a network device.

[0066] In some embodiments, the communication device may be a UE.

[0067] FIG. 10 shows a block diagram illustrating an example device 1000 for massive MIMO according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The device, for example, may be at least part of a communication device such as the communication device using the massive MIMO antenna array in the above examples. The communication device may be a network device functioning as a BS or a UE.

[0068] As shown in the FIG. 10, the example device 1000 may include at least one processor 1010 and at least one memory 1020 that may store instructions 1030. The instructions 1030, when executed by the at least one processor 1010, may cause the device 1000 at least to perform the example method 900 described above.

[0070] In various example embodiments, the at least one memory 1020 in the example device 1000 may include at least one storage medium in various forms, such as a transitory memory and / or a non-transitory memory. The transitory memory may include, but not limited to, for example, a random-access memory (RAM) , a cache, and so on. The non-transitory memory may include, but not limited to, for example, a read only memory (ROM) , a hard disk, a flash memory, and so on. The term “non-transitory, ” as used herein, is a limitation of the medium itself (i.e., tangible, not a signal) as opposed to a limitation on data storage persistency (e.g., RAM vs. ROM) .  Further, the at least memory 1020 may include, but are not limited to, an electric, a magnetic, an optical, an electromagnetic, an infrared, or a semiconductor system, apparatus, or device or any combination of the above.

[0071] Further, in various example embodiments, the example device 1000 may also include at least one other circuitry, element, and interface, for example at least one I / O interface, at least one antenna element, and the like.

[0072] In various example embodiments, the circuitries, parts, elements, and interfaces in the example device 1000, including the at least one processor 1010 and the at least one memory 1020, may be coupled together via any suitable connections including, but not limited to, buses, crossbars, wiring and / or wireless lines, in any suitable ways, for example electrically, magnetically, optically, electromagnetically, and the like.

[0073] It is understood that the structure of the device on the side of the communication device is not limited to the above example device 1000.

[0074] FIG. 11 shows a block diagram illustrating an example apparatus 1100 for massive MIMO according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The apparatus, for example, may be at least part of a communication device such as the communication device using the massive MIMO antenna array in the above examples. The communication device may be a network device functioning as a BS or a UE.

[0075] As shown in the FIG. 11, the example apparatus 1100 may comprise: means 1110 for constructing a mapping between thresholds for traffic load and AEs to be muted, wherein the mapping may be constructed in a manner of: means 1112 for dividing an antenna array of the communication device into four horizontally and vertically symmetric quadrants; means 1114 for determining to mute one or more AEs in one quadrant among the four quadrants, according to the traffic load; and means 1116 for determining to mute AEs in other three quadrants which are mirrored to the one or more AEs determined to be muted in the one quadrant.

[0076] In some embodiments, the apparatus 1100 may further comprise means for determining a number S of thresholds for traffic load based on the number of AEs in the antenna array divided by four.

[0077] In some embodiments, the construction of the mapping may include: dividing a full buffer traffic load of the communication device into S traffic load levels by the S thresholds for  traffic load; dividing a nominal transmit power of the communication device into S transmit power steps corresponding to the S traffic load levels and corresponding to the AEs to be muted; and mapping the thresholds for traffic load to the AEs to be muted.

[0078] In some embodiments, the determining to mute the one or more AEs in the one quadrant may be performed in a manner of after determining to mute at least one AE, determining to mute one neighbor AE of the at least one AE if the one neighbor AE, among the respective neighbor AE of the at least one AE, and the at least one AE generate a maximum sidelobe.

[0079] In some embodiments, the mapping may be in a form of a LUT or a MT.

[0080] In some embodiments, the communication device may be a network device.

[0081] In some embodiments, the communication device may be a UE.
