Abstract

Constructing a mechanical design of a wireless microphone comprising an outer housing having an outer opening, inner housing having an inner opening, ECM device, rubber cover, waterproof mesh, and metal mesh. The ECM device with rubber cover is positioned within the inner opening of the inner housing. The waterproof mesh and metal mesh are positioned within the outer opening of the outer housing. A top air cavity comprises an empty space between the top surface of the ECM device and the outer opening of the outer housing. Due to protection of the ECM device from water, debris, and wind provided by the waterproof mesh and the metal mesh, the top air cavity can be formed to be shallower relative to a conventional wireless microphone. The shallow top air cavity provides better frequency response performance than a conventional deep top air cavity for the audio sound captured by the ECM device.

Description

MECHANICAL DESIGN FOR A WIRELESS MICROPHONEBACKGROUND

[0001] Field of the Various Embodiments

[0002] The various embodiments relate generally to wireless microphones, and more particularly relates to a mechanical design for a wireless microphone.

[0003] Description of the Related Art

[0004] A wireless microphone system (WMS) is a vital product in the professional and personal audio domain. A typical audio WMS setup can include a pairing between a transmitter (microphone) and a receiver that are configured to communicate wirelessly. The transmitter (microphone) captures audio sound from the environment and sends audio data to the paired receiver via wireless communication. The microphone implemented in a wireless microphone system typically includes an electret condenser microphone (ECM) device. A WMS setup is often implemented in an outdoor environment. To allow the microphone to be used outdoors, a conventional microphone typically places the ECM device deep within the housing of the microphone, which produces a deep air cavity on top of the ECM device between the ECM device and an opening (sound pickup hole) in the top of the microphone housing. The resulting deep air cavity of a conventional microphone provides some protection of the sensitive ECM device from environmental elements, such as debris and wind.

[0005] One drawback that can occur with a conventional microphone is that the deep air cavity above the ECM device generally degrades audio performance of the ECM device. In particular, a deeper air cavity above the ECM device typically provides inferior frequency response performance than a shallower air cavity above the ECM device in terms of the audio captured by the ECM device and the audio data transmitted to the receiver. Another drawback that can occur with a conventional microphone is that, while the deep air cavity of a conventional microphone can provide some protection of the ECM device from debris and wind, a conventional microphone does not typically provide protection of the ECM device from water or other liquids.

[0006] As the foregoing illustrates, what is needed is a more effective mechanical design of a wireless microphone.SUMMARY

[0007] In various embodiments, a wireless microphone comprises: an outer housing  having an outer opening; an inner housing having an inner opening that is below the outer opening of the outer housing; an electret condenser microphone (ECM) device assembled within the inner opening of the inner housing; a waterproof mesh assembled above the ECM device and within the outer opening of the outer housing; and a metal mesh assembled above the waterproof mesh and within the outer opening of the outer housing.

[0008] Further embodiments provide, among other things, a wireless microphone system and a method of manufacturing the wireless microphone set forth above.

[0009] At least one technical advantage of the disclosed techniques relative to the prior art is that, with the disclosed techniques, a mechanical design for a wireless microphone is implemented and constructed that allows the wireless microphone to have a shallower air cavity above (on top of) the ECM device relative to a conventional wireless microphone. The “shallow” top air cavity provided by the disclosed techniques provides better frequency response performance than the deep top air cavity typically found in a conventional wireless microphone in terms of the audio sound that is captured by the ECM device and the audio data that is transmitted to a receiver of a wireless microphone system. Other technical advantages of the disclosed techniques relative to the prior art are that the wireless microphone of the disclosed technique protects the ECM device from debris, dust, moisture, shocks, and vibrations. These technical advantages provide one or more technological improvements over prior art approaches.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0010] So that the manner in which the above recited features of the various embodiments can be understood in detail, a more particular description of the inventive concepts, briefly summarized above, can be had by reference to various embodiments, some of which are illustrated in the appended drawings. It is to be noted, however, that the appended drawings illustrate only typical embodiments of the inventive concepts and are therefore not to be considered limiting of scope in any way, and that there are other equally effective embodiments.

[0024] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth to provide a more thorough understanding of the various embodiments. However, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that the inventive concepts can be practiced without one or more of these specific details. As used herein, the term “same or similar” in relation to values, such as  dimensions or ratios, refers to values that are the same or substantially the same with any variance in the values being nominal. As used herein, various components of the microphone are placed or positioned in a particular manner within the microphone, which indicates that the various components are constructed, configured, or assembled in the particular manner within the microphone as described herein. The mechanical design of a wireless microphone is described herein. However, in other embodiments, the mechanical design described herein can also apply to a wired microphone. In general, the mechanical design described herein applies to wired or wireless microphone that is intended for use in an outdoor environment.

[0025] Figure 1 is a block diagram of a wireless microphone system 101 configured to implement one or more aspects of the various embodiments. As shown, the wireless microphone system 101 includes, without limitation, a wireless microphone 100, a paired receiver 150, and a wireless communication channel 170. The wireless communication channel 170 can comprise any technically feasible wireless communications or information channel that allows data exchange, such as a wireless (Wi-Fi) network, personal area network (such as Bluetooth, Wireless USB, IrDA, etc. ) , wide area network (WAN) , a local area network (LAN) , and / or the Internet, among others. In other embodiments, the wireless microphone 100 communicates with the receiver 150 via radio frequency, wherein the wireless microphone 100 transmits a modulated audio signal over a radio frequency from a predefined band via a radio frequency antenna.

[0026] The wireless microphone 100 comprises a transmitter configured to capture audio sound from the environment (such as voices) and transmit audio data representing the captured audio sound to the paired receiver 150 via the wireless communication channel 170. The receiver 150 communicates with the wireless microphone 100 through the wireless communication channel via a wireless communication module of the wireless microphone 100. In particular, the receiver 150 is configured to wirelessly receive the audio data from the wireless microphone 100 and process the audio data to generate an audio signal output. The receiver 150 can include or be connected to an audio output device (not shown) , such as a loudspeaker system, for playing back the audio signal output. The receiver 150 can further include or be connected to an audio recording device (not shown) , such as a digital or analog recorder, for recording the audio data and / or the audio signal output.

[0027] Figure 2 illustrates a front / top view of an exemplary wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. Figure 3 illustrates a back / right view of an exemplary  wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. As shown in Figures 2-3, the wireless microphone 100 includes, without limitation, an outer housing 200 having a front side 210, a top side 220, a bottom side 225, a right side 230, and a back side 260. The outer housing 200 has an associated height measurement (shown as “H” ) . As used herein, the “height” of the outer housing 200 refers to the tallest part of the outer housing 200 (the maximum height of the outer housing 200) from the bottom side 25 to the top side 220 of the outer housing 200.

[0028] Also shown is a power button 240 on the right side 230, an outer opening 250 in the top side 220, and a clip 270 on the back side 260 of the outer housing 200 of the wireless microphone 100. The power button 240 is pressed by a user to activate / initiate the wireless microphone 100. In some embodiments, pressing the power button 240 causes (activates / initiates) the ECM device to begin capturing audio sound and a wireless communication module to begin transmitting audio data representing the audio sound to the receiver 150 via the wireless communication channel 170. The outer opening 250 in the top side 220 of the outer housing 200 comprises a sound pickup hole that allows the ECM device (discussed below) to capture audio sound from the environment. In the examples of Figures 2-3, a metal mesh (discussed below) is inserted into the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200.

[0029] Figure 4 illustrates an exploded view of an exemplary wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. As shown, the wireless microphone 100 includes, without limitation, the front side 210 of the outer housing 200, a wireless communication module 410, a power supply 420, an inner housing 430 having an inner opening 440, the back side 260 of the outer housing 200, and the clip 270 attached to the back side 260 of the wireless microphone 100. The power supply 420 can comprise a battery pack that provides power to the wireless microphone 100. The wireless communication module 410 is coupled to the power supply 420 and is configured for performing wireless communication with the receiver 150 via the wireless communication channel 170. For example, the wireless communication module 410 can comprise a Bluetooth module, network card, modem, or any other type of module that provides wireless communication with the receiver 150.

[0030] As shown in Figure 4, the wireless microphone 100 also includes, without limitation, an electret condenser microphone (ECM) device 400, a rubber cover 404, a waterproof mesh 402, and a metal mesh 406 that are each placed within the outer housing 200  and / or inner housing 430. The ECM device 400 comprises a type of electrostatic capacitor-based microphone. When the wireless microphone 100 is assembled, the outer housing 200 completely encloses the various wireless communication module 410, power supply 420, inner housing 430, ECM device 400, rubber cover 404, waterproof mesh 402, and metal mesh 406. Notably, when the wireless microphone 100 is assembled, the outer housing 200 completely encloses the inner housing 430 and the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430 is positioned directly below the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200.

[0031] The combination of the outer opening 250 in the top side 220 of the outer housing 200 (shown in Figures 2-3) and the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430 can define and / or form an overall cavity (discussed below) . In some embodiments, the ECM device 400, rubber cover 404, waterproof mesh 402, and metal mesh 406 are each positioned within the overall cavity. In these embodiments, the overall cavity further includes, without limitation, an empty air cavity on top of (above) the ECM device 400, referred to herein as a “top air cavity. ” In some embodiments, the top air cavity has a height that extends from the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the outer opening 250 in the outer housing 200. In other embodiments, the top air cavity has a height that extends from the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the waterproof mesh 402. In further embodiments, the top air cavity has a height that extends from the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the metal mesh 406.

[0032] Figure 5 illustrates an exploded close-up view of a top portion of an exemplary wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. In particular, Figure 5 shows a close-up view of the ECM device 400, rubber cover 404, waterproof mesh 402, the metal mesh 406, the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430, and electrical wiring 510 that couples the ECM device 400 to the power supply 420 (not shown) . When the wireless microphone 100 is assembled, the rubber cover 404 is fitted over the ECM device 400 to partially enclose the ECM device 400, and the ECM device 400 with the rubber cover 404 is positioned / assembled inside the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430. When the wireless microphone 100 is assembled, the waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406 are positioned within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200, whereby the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 is directly above the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430.

[0033] Figure 6 illustrates a front cutaway view of a top portion of an exemplary wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. Figure 7 illustrates a side cutaway view of a top portion of an exemplary wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments.  As shown in Figures 6-7, the wireless microphone 100 includes the outer housing 200 having an outer opening 250, the inner housing 430 having an inner opening 440 (which is directly below the outer opening 250) , the ECM device 400, the rubber cover 404, the waterproof mesh 402, the metal mesh 406, and an overall cavity 600 that includes a top air cavity 650.

[0034] The rubber cover 404 partially encloses the ECM device 400 to provide shock and vibration protection for the ECM device 400 by isolating (de-coupling) the ECM device 400 from the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430. Notably, the rubber cover 404 does not entirely enclose the top surface of the ECM device 400 (i.e., the surface / side of the ECM device 400 that faces the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200) . The rubber cover 404 only partially encloses the top surface of the ECM device 400 to allow the ECM device 400 to properly capture audio sounds from the environment. As shown, the ECM device 400 and rubber cover 404 are positioned / assembled within the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430.

[0035] As shown, the waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406 are positioned above the ECM device 400 and within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. The metal mesh 406 can be positioned / assembled to be flush with the outer housing 200 surrounding the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. The waterproof mesh 402 can be positioned / assembled below the metal mesh 406 and closer to the ECM device 400 than the metal mesh 406. In some embodiments, the waterproof mesh 402 is attached to and is in full contact with the metal mesh 406. In other embodiments, the waterproof mesh 402 is not attached to and not in full contact with the metal mesh 406 and a small space gap exists between the waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406. The waterproof mesh 402 protects the ECM device 400 from dust and water / liquids and the metal mesh 406 protects the ECM device 400 from debris and other solid particles. The combination of the metal mesh 406 and the waterproof mesh 402 can provide wind protection for the ECM device 400. Due to the various protections provided by the waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406, the top air cavity 650 above the ECM device 400 can be shallower (have a lower height) relative to a conventional wireless microphone, as discussed below.

[0036] In some embodiments, the combination of the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 and the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430 is used to define and / or form an overall cavity 600 (illustrated by the dashed box) within the wireless microphone 100. The overall cavity 600 includes the top air cavity 650 and contains various components of the  wireless microphone 100. The various components of the wireless microphone 100 that can be positioned / assembled within the overall cavity 600 include the ECM device 400, the rubber cover 404, the waterproof mesh 402, and the metal mesh 406. The top air cavity 650 within the overall cavity 600 comprises an empty space that does not contain any components of the wireless microphone 100 and is located above the top surface of the ECM device 400 between the ECM device 400 and the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. In some embodiments, the top air cavity 650 comprises the empty space between the top surface of the ECM device 400 and the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. In other embodiments, the top air cavity 650 comprises the empty space between the top surface of the ECM device 400 and the waterproof mesh 402. In further embodiments, if the waterproof mesh 402 is not implemented, the top air cavity 650 comprises the empty space between the top surface of the ECM device 400 and the metal mesh 406.

[0037] The top air cavity 650 has a height that extends from the top surface of the ECM device 400 towards the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. In some embodiments, the height of the top air cavity 650 is measured using a line 610 that is perpendicular to the top surface of the ECM device 400, originates at a center point of the top surface of the ECM device 400, and extends towards the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 (referred to herein as the perpendicular line 610) . In the exemplary wireless microphone 100, the ECM device 400 has a cylindrical volume shape and the top surface of the ECM device 400 comprises a circle having a center point. In other embodiments, the ECM device 400 has a different type of volume shape and the top surface of the ECM device 400 comprises a different type of geometric shape having a center point. In some embodiments, the top air cavity 650 has a height that is measured along the perpendicular line 610 from the center point of the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. In other embodiments, the top air cavity 650 has a height that is measured along the perpendicular line 610 from the center point of the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the waterproof mesh 402. In further embodiments, if the waterproof mesh 402 is not implemented, the top air cavity 650 has a height that is measured along the perpendicular line 610 from the center point of the top surface of the ECM device 400 to the metal mesh 406.

[0038] The width of the top air cavity 650 can be determined based, in large part, by the width of the ECM device 400 (shown as “W” ) . As used herein, the “width” of the top air cavity 650 refers to the widest part of the top air cavity 650 (the maximum width of the top air cavity 650) . As used herein, the “width” of the ECM device 400 refers to the widest part of the  ECM device 400 (the maximum width of the ECM device 400) . In the exemplary wireless microphone 100, the ECM device 400 has a cylindrical volume shape and the width of the ECM device 400 comprises the diameter of the cylindrical volume shape.

[0039] As discussed above, the top air cavity 650 in the exemplary wireless microphone 100 can be shallower / shorter relative to a conventional wireless microphone. In particular, the height of the top air cavity 650 in the exemplary wireless microphone 100 can be a fraction of the width of the top air cavity 650. In some embodiments, the ratio of the height to the width of the top air cavity 650 is within a range of 1 / 6 to 1 / 2. In other embodiments, the height of the top air cavity 650 can be a fraction of the width of the ECM device 400. In some embodiments, the ratio of the height of the top air cavity 650 to the width of the ECM device 400 is within a range of 1 / 6 to 1 / 2. In further embodiments, the height of the top air cavity 650 can be a fraction of the height of the outer housing 200 (shown as “H” in Figures 2-3) . In some embodiments, the ratio of the height of the top air cavity 650 to the height of the outer housing 200 is within a range of 1 / 20 to 1 / 10.

[0040] The shallower top air cavity 650 provided by the disclosed mechanical design of the exemplary wireless microphone 100 provides better frequency response performance than the deeper top air cavity typically found in the mechanical design of a conventional wireless microphone in terms of the audio sound that is captured by the ECM device 400 and the audio data that is transmitted to the receiver 150 of the wireless microphone system 101. In particular, the shallower top air cavity 650 of the disclosed mechanical design of the exemplary wireless microphone 100 provides a flatter frequency response in the captured audio sound and the transmitted audio data, which results in better sound quality with clearer voice and sound reproduction than can be achieved by the mechanical design of a conventional wireless microphone.

[0041] Figure 8 illustrates a side cutaway view of an alternative embodiment of a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. The alternative embodiment shown in Figure 8 illustrates a top air cavity 650 having a shortest height. In these embodiments, the components of the wireless microphone 100 are positioned such that at least a portion of the rubber cover 404 is in contact with at least a portion of the waterproof mesh 402. For example, a portion of the top surface of the rubber cover 404 can be in contact with the bottom surface of the waterproof mesh 402. In the example of Figure 8, the entire top surface of the rubber cover 404 is in contact with the waterproof mesh 402. However, the entire waterproof mesh  402 is not in contact with the top surface of the rubber cover 404 due to the empty top air cavity 650 between the waterproof mesh 402 and the ECM device 400. In further embodiments, if the waterproof mesh 402 is not implemented, the components of the wireless microphone 100 are positioned such that at least a portion of the rubber cover 404 is in contact with at least a portion of the metal mesh 406. For example, at least a portion of the top surface of the rubber cover 404 can be in contact with at least a portion of the bottom surface of the metal mesh 406. In another example, the entire top surface of the rubber cover 404 can be in contact with the metal mesh 406. However, the entire metal mesh 406 is not in contact with the top surface of the rubber cover 404 due to the empty top air cavity 650 between the metal mesh 406 and the ECM device 400 when the waterproof mesh 402 is not implemented.

[0042] Figure 9 illustrates a top / side view of a metal mesh 406 that can be implemented in a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. The metal mesh 406 can be made of any metal material, such as stainless steel, chrome, bronze, or the like. In other embodiments, the metal mesh 406 can be made of any hardened material that can provide protection from debris and other solid particles, such as a hard plastic or resin material. In some embodiments, the metal mesh 406 is positioned within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 and assembled / affixed to the outer housing 200 via ultrasonic welding. In some embodiments, the thickness of the metal mesh 406 varies from 0.1mm to 0.8mm and is preferably 0.2mm or similar.

[0043] Figure 10 illustrates a top / side view of a waterproof mesh 402 that can be implemented in a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. The waterproof mesh 402 protects the ECM device 400 from dust and water / liquids and conforms to a waterproof standard, such as IPX-4, IPX-5, IPX-6, IPX-7, and the like. The waterproof mesh 402 can be made of an appropriate material, such as fabric, plastic, or rubber. In some embodiments, the waterproof mesh 402 is positioned within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 and assembled / affixed to the outer housing 200 via an adhesive (such as glue or tape) . In some embodiments, the thickness of the waterproof mesh 402 varies from 0.1mm to 0.8mm and is preferably 0.3mm or similar.

[0044] Figure 11A illustrates a top / side view of a rubber cover 404 that can be implemented in a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. Figure 11B illustrates a bottom / side view of a rubber cover 404 that can be implemented in a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. In general, if the ECM device 400 is  mounted directly onto a mechanical structure, such as the outer housing 200 and / or inner housing 430, there will be shock / vibration and sound / audio coupling between the ECM device 400 and the mechanical structure, resulting in significant degradation of the audio performance of the ECM device 400. In some embodiments, the rubber cover 404 comprises a seal / sleeve that at least partially encloses the ECM device 400 which isolates (de-couples) the ECM device 400 from the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430, thus protecting the ECM device 400 from shock / vibration and sound / audio interference from the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430. As shown, the rubber cover 404 only partially encloses the top surface of the ECM device 400 to allow the ECM device 400 to properly capture audio sounds from the environment. The rubber cover 404 can be made of any rubber material, such as silicone rubber. In other embodiments, the rubber cover 404 is made of any appropriate material that provides isolation of the ECM device 400. In some embodiments, the rubber cover 404 (along with the ECM device 400) is positioned within the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430. The thickness of the rubber cover 404 can vary from 0.3mm to 1.0mm and is preferably 0.5mm or similar.

[0045] Figure 12 is a flow diagram of method steps for constructing a wireless microphone 100, according to various embodiments. Although the method steps are described in conjunction with the systems of Figures 1-11, persons skilled in the art will understand that any system configured to perform the method steps, in any order, falls within the scope of the various embodiments.

[0046] The method 1200 begins by obtaining (at step 1210) an outer housing 200 and an inner housing 430 of the wireless microphone 100. As shown in Figures 2-4, the outer housing 200 includes, without limitation, a front side 210 and a back side 260 that create / form an outer opening 250 in the top side 220 of the outer housing 200 when the front side 210 and back side 260 of the outer housing 200 are assembled. As shown in Figures 4-5, the inner housing 430 is constructed to include an inner opening 440 that is directly below the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. As shown in Figures 4-8, the combination of the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 and the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430 defines / forms an overall cavity 600 containing a top air cavity 650. As shown in Figures 4-8, the constructed physical dimensions of the outer housing 200 (having the outer opening 250) and the inner housing 430 (having the inner opening 440) can affect the height of the top air cavity 650. In some embodiments, the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430 are constructed with appropriate physical dimensions that enables the “shallow” top air cavity 650 described in the  embodiments herein. In these embodiments, the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430 are constructed to have particular height dimensions that positions the outer opening 250 relative to the inner opening 440 in a manner that creates / forms a shallow top air cavity 650 as described in the embodiments herein. For example, the outer housing 200 and the inner housing 430 are constructed in such a manner to create / form a shallow top air cavity 650 having dimensions and / or dimension ratios as described in the embodiments herein.

[0047] The method 1200 also obtains (at step 1220) the other various remaining components of the wireless microphone 100. As shown in Figures 2-4, the other various remaining components of the wireless microphone 100 include a power button 240, a clip 270, a wireless communication module 410, a power supply 420, an ECM device 400, a rubber cover 404, a waterproof mesh 402, and a metal mesh 406. The method 1200 assembles (at step 1230) the various body components of the wireless microphone 100, including the power button 240, clip 270, wireless communication module 410, and power supply 420. The various body components of the wireless microphone 100 can be assembled in a manner illustrated in Figures 2-4.

[0048] The method 1200 then positions / affixes (at step 1240) the ECM device 400 and rubber cover 404 within the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430. As shown in Figures 4-8, the ECM device 400 can be inserted into the rubber cover 404 and then the ECM device 400 with the rubber cover 404 can be placed into the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430. The method 1200 positions / affixes (at step 1250) the waterproof mesh 402 within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200, as shown in Figures 4-8. The waterproof mesh 402 can be affixed to the outer housing 200 via an adhesive (such as glue or tape) . The method 1200 positions / affixes (at step 1260) the metal mesh 406 within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200, as shown in Figures 4-8. The metal mesh 406 can be positioned on top of the waterproof mesh 402 and positioned to be flush with the outer housing 200 surrounding the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. The metal mesh 406 can be attached to the waterproof mesh 402 or have a small gap space between the metal mesh 406 and the waterproof mesh 402. The metal mesh 406 can be assembled to the outer housing 200, for example, via ultrasonic welding.

[0049] In the above-described technique for constructing a wireless microphone 100, a “shallow” top air cavity 650 can be formed between the top surface of the ECM device 400 and the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. As shown in Figures 6-8, the height of the  top air cavity 650 (as measured along the perpendicular line 610) can be a fraction of the width of the top air cavity 650 (the widest part of the top air cavity 650) . In some embodiments, the ratio of the height to the width of the top air cavity 650 is within a range of 1 / 6 to 1 / 2. As also shown in Figures 6-8, the height of the top air cavity 650 can be a fraction of the width of the ECM device 400 (the widest part of the ECM device 400) . In some embodiments, the ratio of the height of the top air cavity 650 to the width of the ECM device 400 is within a range of 1 / 6 to 1 / 2. As shown in Figures 2-8, the height of the top air cavity 650 can be a fraction of the height of the outer housing 200 (shown as “H” in Figures 2-3) . In some embodiments, the ratio of the height of the top air cavity 650 to the height of the outer housing 200 is within a range of 1 / 20 to 1 / 10.

[0050] Also, in the alternative embodiment of Figure 8, the components of the wireless microphone 100 are positioned such that at least a portion of the rubber cover 404 is in contact with at least a portion of the waterproof mesh 402. In further embodiments, if the waterproof mesh 402 is not implemented, the components of the wireless microphone 100 are positioned such that at least a portion of the rubber cover 404 is in contact with at least a portion of the metal mesh 406. The shallower top air cavity 650 provided by the disclosed techniques provides better frequency response performance (flatter frequency response) than the deeper top air cavity typically found in a conventional wireless microphone in terms of the audio sound that is captured by the ECM device 400 and the audio data that is transmitted to the receiver 150 of the wireless microphone system 101.

[0051] In sum, techniques for constructing a mechanical design of a wireless microphone 100 comprising an outer housing 200 having an outer opening 250, an inner housing 430 having an inner opening 440, an ECM device 400, a rubber cover 404, a waterproof mesh 402, and a metal mesh 406. The rubber cover 404 partially encloses the ECM device 400 to provide shock and vibration protection. The ECM device 400 with rubber cover 404 is positioned within the inner opening 440 of the inner housing 430. The waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406 are positioned above the ECM device 400 and within the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. The waterproof mesh 402 protects the ECM device 400 from dust and water / liquids and the metal mesh 406 protects the ECM device 400 from debris and other solid particles. The combination of the metal mesh 406 and the waterproof mesh 402 provides wind protection for the ECM device 400.

[0052] The combination of the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200 and the inner  opening 440 of the inner housing 430 defines an overall cavity 600 within the wireless microphone 100. The overall cavity 600 includes, without limitation, a top air cavity 650, and contains various components of the wireless microphone 100. The ECM device 400, the rubber cover 404, the waterproof mesh 402, and the metal mesh 406 are assembled within the overall cavity 600. The top air cavity 650 within the overall cavity 600 comprises an empty space between the ECM device 400 and the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. Due to the various protections provided by the waterproof mesh 402 and the metal mesh 406, the top air cavity 650 above the ECM device 400 can be shallower relative to a top air cavity found in a conventional wireless microphone. The top air cavity 650 has a height that extends from the top surface of the ECM device 400 towards the outer opening 250 of the outer housing 200. The height of the top air cavity 650 in the exemplary wireless microphone 100 can be a fraction of the width of the top air cavity 650. In addition, the height of the top air cavity 650 in the exemplary wireless microphone 100 can be a fraction of the width of the ECM device 400.

[0053] At least one technical advantage of the disclosed techniques relative to the prior art is that, with the disclosed techniques, a mechanical design for a wireless microphone is implemented and constructed that allows the wireless microphone to have a shallower air cavity above (on top of) the ECM device relative to a conventional wireless microphone. These technical advantages provide one or more technological improvements over prior art approaches.
