AI Technical Summary
Current wireless communication systems face inefficiencies in radio resource management (RRM) measurements due to the need for UEs to measure all synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) within a measurement window, leading to high power consumption and reduced throughput.
The implementation of SSB groups, where UEs measure only the SSBs that directionally correspond to their current location, reducing unnecessary measurements and power consumption. This is achieved through dynamic updates to the RRM measurement configuration and the use of SSB group activation messages.
This approach reduces UE power consumption and increases system throughput by minimizing unnecessary measurements and optimizing the use of scheduling restrictions.

Abstract
Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RADIO RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MEASUREMENT EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTTECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including wireless communication systems performing radio resource management (RRM) measurement using synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) .BACKGROUND
[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .
[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems' standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .
[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.
[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .
[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0025] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.
[0026] In some wireless communication systems, an RRM measurement is configured by the network via radio resource control (RRC) signaling, including in idle, inactive and / or connected modes. For example, a measurement object configuration for the RRM measurement includes information that the UE needs to perform an RRM measurement, including frequency, a reference signal configuration, a cell list, an associated measurement gap and other configuration information of the sort. For example, for SSB based RRM measurements, one key parameter of the reference signal configuration provides information on which SSB the UE is to measure (e.g., as provided in 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 38.331, version 15.3.0 (September 2018) (hereinafter "3GPP TS 38.331" ) .
[0027] FIG. 1A illustrates an example of a MeasObjectNR IE 102 indicating a referenceSignalConfig IE 104.
[0028] FIG. 1B illustrates an example of a referenceSignalConfig IE 104 indicating an ssb-ConfigMobility IE 106.
[0029] FIG. 1C illustrates an example of a ssb-ConfigMobility IE 106 indicating an ssb-ToMeasure IE 108.
[0030] FIG. 1D illustrates an example of an ssb-ToMeasure IE 108 indicating which SSBs are to be measured in an SMTC measurement window.
[0031] Accordingly, as illustrated in FIG. 1A through FIG. 1D, a MeasObjectNR IE 102 may provide a referenceSignalConfig IE 104, which may provide a ssb-ConfigMobility IE 106, which may provide a ssb-ToMeasure IE 108, which provides information on which SSB the UE performs a measurement.
[0032] In some wireless communication systems, a definition of an ssb-ToMeasure IE (e.g., illustrated as the ssb-ToMeasure IE 108) may be provided as, for example, the set of SSBs to be measured during an SMTC window duration. In each SMTC window duration, there may be up to 64 SSBs, but in some cases the network does not transmit all 64 SSBs. Respective to one or more SMTC windows, the network may indicate to the UE which SSBs to measure in a bitmap of the ssb-ToMeasure IE 108. The first (i.e., leftmost) bit of the bitmap corresponds to a SSB index 0, the second bit of the bitmap corresponds to a SSB index 1, and so on. The value 0 in the bitmap indicates that the corresponding SSB is not to be measured, while a value of 1 in the bitmap indicates that the corresponding SSB is to be measured (e.g., as further defined in TS 38.215, version 15.3.0 (September 2018) (hereinafter "3GPP TS 38.215" ) . When the field is not configured, the UE measures on all SSBs. Regardless of the value of the field in the bitmap, the SSBs outside of the applicable SMTC window are not to be measured (e.g., as further defined in TS 38.215 clause 5.1.1) .
[0033] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of multiple nodes of a network (e.g., a serving cell and neighbor cells) transmitting SSBs indicated in an ssb-ToMeasure IE.
[0034] Note that in the ssb-ToMeasure IE, the network may include all the candidate SSBs from both the serving cell 202 and the neighbor cell 204. In other words, the ssb-ToMeasure IE may include a superset of all SSBs that are transmitted by the serving cell and the neighbor cells on the same frequency. For example, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the serving cell 202 is transmitting eight SSBs with different transmit (Tx) beams 208, and the neighbor cell 204 is also transmitting the eight SSBs using the Tx beams 208. In this example case, the applicable ssb-ToMeasure IE indicates eight SSBs (where each of the serving cell 202 and neighbor cell 204 are using those eight SSBs on the eight indicated transmit beams, where SSB1 is transmitted on to “Tx beam #1” , SSB2 is transmitted on “Tx beam #2” , etc. ) . The UE 206 may measure the eight transmitted SSBs from the serving cell 202 and the eight transmitted SSBs from the neighbor cell 204. The use of eight SSBs is merely for example, and up to 64 SSBs may be transmitted by a serving cell 202, neighbor cell 204, or any node of a network. In such examples where 64 SSBs are transmitted, the 64 SSBs are to be indicated in the ssb-ToMeasure IE.
[0035] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of a UE 306 having considerable measurement results on some of the SSBs transmitted by a network.
[0036] In some wireless communication systems, the UE can encounter a scenario where it can have considerable measurement results on some (but not all) of the SSBs transmitted by the network, due to differing beamforming directionalities For example, an SSB on a Tx beam that is transmitted in an opposite direction from the UE may correspond to a weak measurement result rather than a considerable measurement result. Further, the measurement of SSBs on Tx beams that are transmitted in opposite directions in relation to the UE requires an attendant power consumption at the UE. Further, it may be that the UE does not use the corresponding symbols for substantive data, due to scheduling restrictions to allow for these measurements. These costs are carriers without any real expectation of improvement to mobility performance as a result of the measurement of the SSBs on the Tx beams broadcast in the opposite directions.
[0037] The example illustrated in FIG. 3 shows that the UE 306 may measure SSBs on Tx beam #2 308, Tx beam #3 310 and Tx beam #4 312 as broadcast from each of the serving cell 302 and the neighbor cell 304. These SSBs have considerable measurement results as they are transmitted in alignment 320 with the direction of the UE 306. However, the UE 306 may not obtain considerable measurement results from, for example, SSBs on Tx beam #6 314, Tx beam #7 316, and Tx beam #8 318 as they are transmitted in a direction opposite of where the UE 306 is located.
[0038] In most cases, the ssb-ToMeasure IE is updated via RRC signaling, thus it is unrealistic for the network to update the ssb-ToMeasure IE frequently (e.g., to account for new / different ones of the Tx beams being transmitted in the direction of a UE's current location, for example in cases corresponding to UE mobility) .
[0039] SSB Groups
[0040] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of the use of SSB groups that each correspond to / cover a zone in which a UE may be located.
[0041] An SSB group may be represent a subset of a full set of SSBs that currently being transmitted from serving cells, neighbor cells and any other nodes of a network. In some such embodiments, the SSB group is made up of SSBs transmitted in the direction of a zone in which a UE may be located. In some cases, the SSB group may include both intra-frequency and inter-frequency SSBs.
[0042] In some embodiments, dynamic updates to an RRM measurement configuration used by the UE to reflect a new / updated SSB group may be used to efficiently follow a UE's movement into a new zone.
[0043] FIG. 4 illustrates different SSB groups covering different zones. Tx beam #1 406, Tx beam #2 408, and Tx beam #3 410 are used to transmit corresponding SSBs of a first SSB group. As can be seen, these SSBs directionally correspond to / cover zone 1 402. In this case, a UE in zone 1 402 could be configured to measure the SSB group having the SSBs of Tx beam #1 406, Tx beam #2 408, and Tx beam #3 410r, without measuring any other SSBs on other Tx beams that are not in the SSB group, thus reducing power consumption in comparison to measuring all the SSBs on all used Tx beams.
[0044] Similarly, Tx beam #7 412, Tx beam #8 414, and Tx beam #1 416 are used to transmit corresponding SSBs of a second SSB group. As can be seen, these SSBs directionally correspond to / cover zone 2 404. In this case, a UE in zone 2 404 could be configured to measure the SSB group having the SSBs of Tx beam #7 412, Tx beam #8 414, and Tx beam #1 416, without having to measure any other SSBs on other Tx beams, thus reducing power consumption in comparison to measuring all the SSBs on all used Tx beams.
[0045] In some cases, SSBs may be in multiple different SSB groups that correspond to multiple different zones at the same time. For example, the SSB of Tx beam #1 418 is in a first SSB group that includes SSBs directionally corresponding to a UE that is in zone 1 402 and in a second SSB group that includes SSBs directionally corresponding to a UE that is in zone 2 404. Accordingly, embodiments disclosed herein are not limited to the identification of one single SSB group for each SSB, as SSBs can be a part of one or more SSB groups. Further, in another example, the network may identify one or more SSB groups for a UE to measure. Embodiments disclosed herein are not limited to the use of one SSB group at a time.
[0046] With further reference to FIG. 4, consider a case where a UE moves from zone 1 402 to zone 2 404. In this example, the UE, while still in zone 1 402, may be configured to measure a first SSB group made up of the SSBs of Tx beam #1 406, Tx beam #2 408, and Tx beam #3 410 and thus directionally correspond to / cover zone 1 402 where the UE resides. When the UE moves to zone 2 404 it may be configured to measure a second SSB group made up of the SSBs of Tx beam #7 412, Tx beam #8 414, and Tx beam #1 416, and thus directionally correspond to / cover zone 2 404 where the UE resides after mobility. Further, in some cases, once the UE has moved to zone 2 404, the UE may be configured to stop measuring the first SSB group having the SSBs that covers zone 1 402, as the second SSB group contains SSBs with a better measurement result due to the UE moving to zone 2 404.
[0047] The use of SSB groups in this manner causes the UE, during RRM measurement, to measure SSBs within the SSB group and not to measure SSBs not within the SSB group. This reduces overall UE power consumption due to relatively fewer measurements being taken. Further, it increases possible throughput by reducing the number of symbols with a scheduling restriction (as any scheduling restriction that would otherwise be used for measuring the non-measured SSBs may not be so used, freeing up the corresponding symbols for other non-SSB-measurement uses) .
[0048] FIG. 5 illustrates first and second examples of a UE measuring SSBs during SMTC windows.
[0049] A first example 502 illustrates a case corresponding to current wireless communication systems. In the first example, a UE may measure all SSBs of an ssb-ToMeasure IE (e.g., SSBs #1-#64 506 in FIG. 5) , corresponding to a use of an entire SMTC window 508. This may be considered to consume an unnecessarily high amount of power, due to the UE seeing considerable measurement results from only a few of the SSBs #1-#64 506 that are directionally aligned / corresponding with the location of the UE.Further, to enable these measurements, it may be that a scheduling restriction 510 applies across the whole SMTC window 508 (e.g., as provided in TS 38.133, version 15.3.0 (September 2018) (hereinafter "3GPP TS 38.133" ) (for example, as in cases when the UE performs intra-frequency measurements in a time division duplex (TDD) band) . In some such cases, the scheduling restriction 510 may cause “invalid” UL slots (slots that are nominally UL slots, but which cannot actually be used for UL data due to the scheduling restriction 510) . For example, it may be that the UE cannot transmit (e.g., a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , and / or a sounding reference signal (SRS) ) on symbols to be used for measuring the SSBs #1-#64 506, as illustrated. In some cases, this restriction may further extend to data symbols one symbol after each consecutive SSB symbol to be measured within the SMTC window 508.
[0050] A second example 504 illustrates a second case corresponding to embodiments disclosed herein. Beneficially, the UE measures a subset of the configured SSBs, (e.g., SSBs #1-#3 512) during an SMTC window 514. These measurements may be performed corresponding to a configuration to the UE to use an SSB group that includes (e.g., only) the SSBs #1-#3 512. This SSB group may have been selected for use due to the directional correspondence of the SSBs #1-#3 512 to a zone in which the UE is located. As a result, the UE has no unnecessary power consumption, as the UE measures the suitable subset of SSBs (the SSBs #1-#3 512, as indicated in the SSB group configuration information) that may be expected to have considerable measurement results. A scheduling restriction 516 can accordingly be applied to only some of the symbols for some of the SSBs (e.g., on symbols for the SSBs #1-#3 512 that are being measured, and in some cases plus one more SSB symbol for offset) , rather than the set of all symbols corresponding to the whole SMTC window 514 (plus offset) Therefore, system throughput may be increased (as valid uplink slots 518 open up in the SMTC window 514) .
[0051] In some embodiments, the network identifies an SSB group to configure to a UE (for the UE to activate) based on one or more possible types of information. In some cases, the network identifies which SSB group to configure based on new and / or existing positioning measurements of the UE. For example, the positioning measurement may be an uplink time difference of arrival (UTDOA) positioning measurement, an observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA) positioning measurement, or round trip time (RTT) positioning measurement. Once the location of the UE is determined using these positioning measurements, an SSB group having SSBs that directionally correspond to a zone in which that UE is located may be identified and communicated to the UE.
[0052] In some cases, the network identifies which SSB group to configure to a UE based on a UE positioning scheme. Example UE positioning schemes can include a determination of a UE's trajectory (e.g., on a high speed train) , and / or a determination of a UE's altitude information (e.g., in air-to-ground (ATG) scenarios) . In some examples, with a UE's trajectory and / or altitude information, the network can determine the current and / or future location of a UE and configure an SSB group accordingly. For example, once the current and / or future location of the UE is determined, an SSB group having SSBs that directionally correspond to a zone in which that UE is or will be located may be identified and communicated to the UE.
[0053] In some cases, the network identifies which SSB group to use based on an artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI / ML) model. For example, a network side training model can be used to predict the trajectory of the UE, and thus identify an appropriate SSB group to use. For example, once the trajectory of the UE is predicted, an SSB group having SSBs that directionally correspond to a zone in which that UE is or will be located may be identified and communicated to the UE.
[0054] In some cases, the network identifies which SSB group to use based on a layer one (L1) measurement report, where the SSB with the strongest L1 measurement result corresponds to the SSBs that directionally correspond to the location of the UE. In other words, the SSBs with the strongest L1 measurement results in the report may be used to determine a location of the UE. The L1 measurement report may be, for example, an SSB based L1 measurement report and / or a channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) based L1 reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement report. Once the location of the UE is determined, an SSB group having SSBs that directionally correspond to a zone in which that UE is located may be identified and communicated to the UE.
[0055] Various mechanisms for activating and / or deactivating an SSB group at a UE are contemplated. In some such mechanisms, the network sends the UE an “SSB group activation message” that configures the UE to activate and / or deactivate one or more SSB groups.
[0056] In some cases, a new medium access control-control element (MAC-CE) may be communicated from the network to the UE that causes the UE to directly activate and / or deactivate an SSB group. The MAC-CE command may include an SSB group identifier (ID) and a status of the corresponding SSB group (regardless of whether or not that SSB group is currently activated or deactivated) . The UE then activates and / or deactivates the indicated SSB group based on the SSB group ID and the status of the SSB group in the MAC-CE command. A MAC-CE as described may be considered an example of an “SSB group activation message” as discussed herein.
[0057] In some cases, a downlink control information (DCI) command communicated from the network to the UE may be introduced to switch which SSB group is active. For example, a DCI command may indicate an SSB group ID. After receiving the DCI command, the UE activates the corresponding SSB group (and may further deactivate a previously-in-use SSB group) . A DCI command as described may be considered an example of an “SSB group activation message” as discussed herein.
[0058] In some cases, a conditional based SSB group selection may be introduced. The network can configure a condition associated with an SSB group for conditional selection that is provided to the UE in, for example, a conditional message. When the condition is met, the UE activates the corresponding / associated SSB group. For example, the condition for SSB activation may be based on a specific location, or based on when a measurement of one or more SSBs of the SSB group meets a threshold.
[0059] In one example, a UE moves from one location to a second location. As the UE moves to the second location, the measurement result of the one or more SSBs of an SSB group that directionally correspond to a zone covering the second location may increase in power or, in other words, become stronger, thus meeting a condition, received from the network in a conditional message, for the UE to activate the SSB group having those one or more SSBs. A similar example can be contemplated where the UE deactivates an SSB group when the measurement result of the one or more SSBs of the SSB group decreases below a threshold.
[0060] In a second example, a UE moves from one location to a second location. As the UE moves to the second location, the UE determines that its new location (at the second location) meets the condition received from the network in a conditional message for the UE to activate a second SSB group having SSBs that directionally correspond to the second location of the UE. Similarly, the UE may be configured to conditionally deactivate an SSB group when SSBs of the SSB group do not directionally correspond to its new location (at the second the location) .
[0061] FIG. 6A illustrates an example of an SSB-ConfigMobility IE 602 indicating an ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE 604.
[0062] For example, an ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE 604 can be introduced in the SSB-ConfigMobility IE 602 indicating which SSB group to measure. Further, the ssbGroup- ToMeasure IE 604 may include one or more ssbGroup-ToMeasure IEs 604 as further described in FIG. 6B.
[0063] FIG. 6B illustrates an example of an ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE 604 further indicating an ssbgroupID field 606 and an ssb-ToMeasure field 608.
[0064] For example, in the ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE 604, the ssbgroupID field 606 provides an ID for the SSB group and the ssb-ToMeasure field 608 indicates which SSBs are within the SSB group. Consider one possible example where an SSB group has three SSBs. The ssbgroupID field 606 may contain a value of 1 (identifying the SSB group) and the ssb-ToMeasure field 608 may contain a bitmap having 1's in the first, second, and third bitmap positions (identifying SSBs 1, 2 and 3 as being part of SSB group 1) . An SSB group with 3 SSBs is used here merely for example –it is contemplated that any number of SSB groups having any number of SSBs could be so configured.
[0065] In some embodiments, a new UE capability may be communicated from the UE to the network to indicate the maximum supported active SSB groups, on, for example, a per frequency layer basis, a per frequency range basis, or a per UE basis. Consider an example case where the network does not have a good knowledge of the location of the UE. In such cases, the network may identify multiple SSB groups for the UE to measure as to have larger coverage of where the UE may be located. Accordingly, the UE capability informs the network of how many SSB groups may be configured in such circumstances.
[0066] In some cases, an SSB group activation and / or deactivation delay may be introduced for a MAC-CE based approach described herein. This may take the form of: TSSB_ (de) activation = THARQ + 3 ms. Similarly, an active SSB group switch delay may be introduced for the DCI based approach disclosed herein. This may take the form of: TSSBGroup_switch = X ms, where X could be, for example, 1, 2, 3, or some other value. In some cases, the UE starts / stops an RRM measurement on the SSBs in / according to the SSB group activation / deactivation after TSSB_ (de) activation or TSSBGroup_switch (e.g., from the time the SSB group activation message is received at the UE) .
[0067] Embodiments disclosed herein may impact possible UE measurement behavior. For example, if both the ssb-ToMeasure IE and ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE are configured, in some cases, the UE follows ssb-ToMeasure IE if no SSB group is active / indicated by the network. In some other cases, the UE follows the ssbGroup-ToMeasure IE and ignores the ssb-ToMeasure IE if there is an active SSB group.
[0068] If one or more SSBs are included in each of a first SSB group being deactivated at the UE and a second SSB group being activated at the UE, in some cases, the UE keeps the measurements made of the one or more SSBs according to the first SSB group and does not drop the measurement samples of the one or more SSBs performed according to the first SSB group before the activation of the second SSB group. The RRM measurement delay may not be extended for such SSBs. In some other cases, the UE restart measurements on the SSBs that are in these SSB groups when a switch from the first SSB group to the second SSB group occurs. In view of this, a delay on the RRM measurement may be used.
[0069] FIG. 7 illustrates a method 700 of one or more nodes of a network, according to embodiments herein. The illustrated method 700 includes identifying 702 a first SSB group made up of first one or more SSBs transmitted by the one or more nodes of the network that directionally correspond to a first zone covering a first location of a UE. The method 700 further includes transmitting 704, to the UE, a first SSB group activation message instructing the UE to activate the first SSB group.
[0070] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises transmitting, to the UE, configuration information that defines the one or more SSBs of the first SSB group to the UE.
[0071] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises determining the location of the UE based on a positioning measurement of the UE. In some such embodiments, the positioning measurement of the UE comprises one or more of an UTDOA positioning measurement, an OTDOA positioning measurement, and RTT positioning measurement.
[0072] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises determining the location of the UE based on one or more of a predictable trajectory of the UE and altitude information of the UE.
[0073] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises determining the location of the UE based on a ML model.
[0074] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises determining a location of the UE based on an L1 measurement report. In some such embodiments, the L1 measurement report comprises an SSB based L1 RSRP measurement report. In some such embodiments, the L1 measurement report comprises a CSI-RS based L1 RSRP measurement report.
[0075] In some embodiments of the method 700, the first SSB group activation message comprises a MAC-CE.
[0076] In some embodiments of the method 700, the first SSB group activation message comprises an SSB group ID.
[0077] In some embodiments of the method 700, the first SSB group activation message comprises a DCI command.
[0078] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises: determining that the UE has moved to a second location, identifying a second SSB group made up of second one or more SSBs transmitted by the one or more nodes of the network that directionally correspond to a second zone covering the second location of the UE, and transmitting, to the UE, a second SSB group activation message instructing the UE to activate the second SSB group. In some such embodiments, the second SSB group activation message further instructs the UE to deactivate the first SSB group.
[0079] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises receiving, from the UE, a maximum number of active SSB groups that the UE is configured to support on one of: a per frequency layer basis, a per frequency range basis, and a UE basis.
