Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices and methods of communication. In one aspect, a network device transmits, to a terminal device, a MAC CE indicating a status of an activation or deactivation of an importance-based packet discard for a set of serving cells or a set of LCGs. Based on the status, the terminal device activates or deactivates the importance-based packet discard. In this way, an importance-based packet discard may be activated or deactivated in a granularity of a cell or LCG or DRB.

[0046] In uplink, UE may be configured with a PDU set based discard operation for a specific data radio bearer (DRB) . In this case, the UE may discard all packets in a PDU set when one PDU belonging to this PDU set is discarded due to expiration of a discard timer. In case of congestion, PSI may be used for PDU set discarding. For an importance-based packet discard, an activation / deactivation MAC CE may be used to trigger a discard mechanism based on PSI that requests the UE to apply a shorter discard timer to low importance PDUs or PDU sets in a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) entity. How PDUs or PDU sets are identified as low importance may be left up to UE implementation.

[0047] In the context of the present disclosure, the term “an importance-based packet discard” herein may be interchangeably used with “a packet discard” or “a packet discard based on PSI” . The term “a packet discard” may be interchangeably used with “a PDCP discard” or “a PDCP service data unit (SDU) discard” .

[0048] It has been agreed to introduce a MAC CE to indicate an activation or deactivation of an importance-based packet discard, e.g., when congestion situation is detected. However, how to implement the MAC CE is still unclear.

[0049] Furthermore, it has been agreed that UE may use a new defined buffer status table if buffered data volume is within a range of the new defined buffer status table. Otherwise a legacy buffer status table is used. However, how to indicate a selection of a buffer status table is still unclear.

[0050] Thus, embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of communication for a packet discard.

[0051] In another aspect, a network device transmits, to a terminal device, at least one of a MAC CE or a MAC subheader indicating a status of an activation or deactivation of an importance-based packet discard for the terminal device or a MAC entity of the terminal device. Based on the status, the terminal device activates or deactivates the importance-based packet discard. In this way, an importance-based packet discard may be activated or deactivated in a granularity of UE or MAC entity.

[0052] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution of communication for BSR. In the solution, a terminal device transmits, to a network device, a MAC CE comprising information of a buffer status table selected for an LCG in a set of LCGs. In this way, information of a buffer status table selection for an LCG may be delivered to a network upon BSR.

[0053] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0054] EXAMPLE OF COMMUNICATION NETWORK

[0055] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1, the communication network 100 may include a terminal device 110 and network devices 120 and 130. The network device 120 provides a serving cell 121 and the network device 130 provides a serving cell 131. The terminal device 110 may be located in any of the serving cell 121 and 131 and may be served by any of the network devices 120 and 130. It is to be understood that each of the network devices 120 and 130 may provide more serving cells to serve one or more terminal devices.

[0056] It is also to be understood that the numbers of terminal devices and network devices and serving cells in FIG. 1 are given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The communication network 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and / or terminal devices and / or serving cells adapted for implementing implementations of the present disclosure.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may communicate with any of the network devices 120 and 130 via a channel such as a wireless communication channel. The communications in the communication network 100 may conform to any suitable standards  including, but not limited to, global system for mobile communications (GSM) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-evolution, LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , new radio (NR) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , code division multiple access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE radio access network (GERAN) , machine type communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0058] In some scenarios, the terminal device 110 is served by the network device 120. When congestion is detected, the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to perform a packet discard based on PSI (i.e., an importance-based packet discard) .

[0059] In some scenarios, the terminal device 110 may transmit a BSR to the network device 120. Upon generation of the BSR, the terminal device 110 may select a buffer status table based on buffered data volume, and determine, from the buffer status table, an index of a buffer size corresponding to the buffered data volume. The index of the buffer size may be comprised in the BSR.

[0060] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for activating or deactivating an importance-based packet discard and a solution for delivering information of a selected buffer status table. The solutions will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 2 to 10C.

[0061] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF ACTIVATION OR DEACTIVATION OF PACKET DISCARD

[0062] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for activating or deactivating an importance-based packet discard per cell or per LCG. For convenience, this solution will be described in connection with FIGs. 2 to 4B.

[0063] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 of communication for a packet discard according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 2 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may  be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0064] As shown in FIG. 2, the network device 120 transmits 210, to the terminal device 110, a MAC CE indicating a status (or information) of an activation or deactivation of an importance-based packet discard for a set of serving cells or a set of LCGs.

[0065] With reference to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit 211 the MAC CE indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the set of serving cells. In other words, the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard on a per-cell basis via a MAC CE.

[0066] Different cells may have different congestion situations and may be deployed on different network devices. For a terminal device connected to multiple cells (e.g., in case of carrier aggregation or dual connection) , some of the multiple cells may be congested, while others may be uncongested. The terminal device has no knowledge of which cell is congested. Thus, it is proper to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard on a per-cell basis.

[0067] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a set of fields corresponding to the set of serving cells. A field (or each field) in the set of fields may indicate the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for a serving cell corresponding to the field. For illustration, example MAC CEs will be described in connection with FIGs. 3A and 3B below.

[0068] FIG. 3A illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating an example MAC CE 300A for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-cell basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE of one octet is shown. As shown in FIG. 3A, the MAC CE 300A may include fields Ci, where i = 0 to 7. If there is a special cell (SpCell) (i = 0) or a secondary cell (SCell) configured for a MAC entity with SCellIndex i, Ci indicates the activation / deactivation status of importance-based packet discard (e.g., discard timer based mechanism for the low importance PDU set or for PSI) with the corresponding cell. Otherwise, a MAC entity may ignore the field Ci. The field Ci may be set to 1 to indicate that corresponding cell (e.g., SpCell with i = 0 or SCell with SCellIndex i) shall be activated. The field Ci may be set to 0 to indicate that the corresponding cell shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any  other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect. This example may apply to the case of less than or equal to 8 serving cells.

[0069] FIG. 3B illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 300B for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-cell basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE of four octets is shown. As shown in FIG. 3B, the MAC CE 300B may include fields Ci, where i = 0 to 31. Other details of the field Ci are similar as that described in FIG. 3A and thus are not repeated here for conciseness. This example may apply to the case of more than 8 serving cells, and may also apply to the case of less than or equal to 8 serving cells.

[0070] In some embodiments, the set of serving cells may comprise a single serving cell. The MAC CE comprises a field indicating an identity (ID) of the single serving cell and a field indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the single serving cell. For illustration, an example MAC CE will be described in connection with FIG. 3C below.

[0071] FIG. 3C illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 300C for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-cell basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE for a serving cell is shown. As shown in FIG. 3C, the MAC CE 300C may include a field “serving cell ID” , a field “A / D” and a field “R” . The field “R” indicates a reserved bit. The field “serving cell ID” indicates an ID of the serving cell for which the MAC CE applies. The field “A / D” indicates the activation / deactivation status of the importance-based packet discard. The field “A / D” may be set to 1 to indicate that the serving cell shall be activated. The field “A / D” may be set to 0 to indicate that the serving cell shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0072] In some embodiments, a MAC subheader of the MAC CE may comprise a logic channel identity (LCID) or extended LCID (eLCID) value indicating that the MAC CE is for the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the set of serving cells. In other words, a MAC subheader with a new LCID or eLCID value shall be used to identify the MAC CE.

[0073] With reference to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the network device 120 may  transmit 212 the MAC CE indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the set of LCGs. In other words, the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard on a per-LCG basis via a MAC CE.

[0074] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a set of fields corresponding to the set of LCGs. A field (or each field) in the set of fields may indicate the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for an LCG corresponding to the field. For illustration, example MAC CEs will be described in connection with FIG. 4A below.

[0075] FIG. 4A illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating an example MAC CE 400A for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-LCG basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE is shown. As shown in FIG. 4A, the MAC CE 400A may include fields LCGi, where i = 0 to 7. A field LCGi indicates the activation / deactivation status of importance-based packet discard (e.g., discard timer based mechanism for the low importance PDU set or for PSI) for LCG i. The field LCGi is set to 1 to indicate that the status of packet discard mechanism for LCG i shall be activated. The field LCGi is set to 0 to indicate that the status of packet discard mechanism for LCG i shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0076] In some embodiments, the set of LCGs may comprise a single LCG. The MAC CE comprises a field indicating an ID of the single LCG and a field indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the single LCG. For illustration, an example MAC CE will be described in connection with FIG. 4B below.

[0077] FIG. 4B illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 400B for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-LCG basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE for an LCG is shown. As shown in FIG. 4B, the MAC CE 400B may include a field “LCG ID” , a field “A / D” and a field “R” . The field “R” indicates a reserved bit. The field “LCG ID” indicates an ID of the LCG for which the MAC CE applies. The field “A / D” indicates the activation / deactivation status of the importance-based packet discard. The field “A / D” may be set to 1 to indicate that the status of packet discard mechanism for the LCG shall be activated. The field “A / D” may be set to 0 to indicate that the status of packet  discard mechanism for the LCG shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0078] In some embodiments, a MAC subheader of the MAC CE may comprise an LCID or eLCID value indicating that the MAC CE is for the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the set of LCGs. In other words, a MAC subheader with a new LCID or eLCID value shall be used to identify the MAC CE.

[0079] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, upon reception of the MAC CE, the terminal device 110 may activate or deactivate 220 the importance-based packet discard based on the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard.

[0080] With reference to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate 221 the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard to a PDCP layer of a DRB which is configured with the importance-based packet discard or whose corresponding LCG is configured with the importance-based packet discard. If the activation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated, the PDCP layer may activate the importance-based packet discard. If the deactivation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated, the PDCP layer may deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0081] In other words, upon reception of the MAC CE for packet discard activation / deactivation, a MAC entity may only indicate the activation / deactivation status to the PDCP layer of DRB or the DRB whose corresponding LCG configured with importance-based packet discard. For a DRB (or PDCP configuration) , a new field indicating whether the DRB shall perform importance-based packet discard may be configured by the network device 120.

[0082] For illustration, an example procedure of a MAC layer may be described as below.

[0083] The MAC entity shall for each DRB (or each DRB whose corresponding LCG) configured with importance-based PDCP discard:

[0084] 1> if a MAC CE indicating activation / deactivation of importance-based packet discard is received:

[0085] 2> indicate upper layer (e.g., PDCP layer) to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard based on the corresponding activation / deactivation status.

[0086] For illustration, an example procedure of a MAC layer for per-cell activation / deactivation may be described as below.

[0087] 1> if a PDCP discard activation / deactivation MAC CE indicating activation / deactivation of importance-based packet discard of a serving cell is received:

[0088] 2> indicate upper layer (e.g., the PDCP layer of DRBs or DRBs whose corresponding LCG configured with importance-based PDCP discard) to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard based on the activation / deactivation information of the corresponding cell.

[0089] For illustration, an example procedure of a PDCP layer may be described as below.

[0090] 1> if the indication of activation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) :

[0091] 2> PDCP entity shall activate / perform the importance-based packet discard (e.g., UE may choose which PSI to apply the new PDCP discardTimer for lower importance) .

[0092] 1> if the indication of deactivation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) :

[0093] 2> PDCP entity shall deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0094] With reference to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate 222 the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard to PDCP layers of all data radio bearers DRBs. If the activation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated and the importance-based packet discard for a DRB (for convenience, also referred to as a first DRB herein) or an LCG (for convenience, also referred to as a first LCG herein) corresponding to the first DRB is configured, a PDCP layer of the first DRB may activate the importance-based packet discard. If the deactivation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated and the importance-based packet discard for a DRB (for convenience, also referred to as a second DRB herein) or an LCG (for convenience, also referred to as a second LCG herein) corresponding to the second DRB is configured, a PDCP layer of the second DRB may deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0095] In other words, upon reception of the MAC CE for packet discard activation / deactivation, a MAC entity may indicate the activation / deactivation status to the  PDCP layer of all DRBs.

[0096] For illustration, an example procedure of a MAC layer may be described as below.

[0097] 1> if a MAC CE indicating activation / deactivation of importance-based packet discard is received:

[0098] 2> indicate upper layer (e.g., PDCP layer of all DRBs) to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard based on the corresponding activation / deactivation status.

[0099] For illustration, an example procedure of a PDCP layer may be described as below.

[0100] 1> if the indication of activation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (e.g., MAC layer) , and if importance-based PDCP discard for the DRB or the corresponding LCG is configured:

[0101] 2> PDCP entity shall activate / perform the importance-based packet discard (e.g., UE may choose which PSI to apply the new PDCP discardTimer for lower importance) .

[0102] 1> if the indication of deactivation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) and if importance-based PDCP discard is configured:

[0103] 2> PDCP entity shall deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0104] With the process 200, an importance-based packet discard may be activated or deactivated in a granularity of a cell or LCG or DRB.

[0105] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution for activating or deactivating an importance-based packet discard per UE or per MAC entity. For convenience, this solution will be described in connection with FIGs. 5 to 6C.

[0106] FIG. 5 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating another example process 500 of communication for a packet discard according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 500 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 5 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0107] As shown in FIG. 5, the network device 120 transmits 510, to the terminal device 110, at least one of a MAC CE or a MAC subheader indicating a status (or information) of an activation or deactivation of an importance-based packet discard for the terminal device 110 or a MAC entity of the terminal device 110.

[0108] With reference to FIG. 5, in some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit 511 the MAC subheader indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the terminal device 110 or the MAC entity of the terminal device 110. In other words, the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard on a per-UE or per-MAC entity basis via a MAC subheader. In some embodiments, there is no corresponding MAC CE.

[0109] In some embodiments, the MAC subheader may comprise a field indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard. In some embodiments, the MAC subheader may comprise an LCID or eLCID value indicating that the MAC subheader is for the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the terminal device 110 or the MAC entity of the terminal device 110. For illustration, example MAC subheaders will be described in connection with FIGs. 6A and 6B below.

[0110] FIG. 6A illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating an example MAC subheader 600A for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-UE or per-MAC entity basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example MAC subheader for PDCP discard activation / deactivation is shown. As shown in FIG. 6A, the MAC subheader 600A may include a field “R” , a field “A / D” and a field “LCID” .

[0111] The field “R” indicates a reserved bit. The field “A / D” indicates the activation / deactivation status of the importance-based packet discard (e.g., discard timer based mechanism for the low importance PDU set or for PSI) . The field “A / D” may be set to 1 to indicate that the PDCP discard mechanism shall be activated for the UE or the corresponding MAC entity. The field “A / D” may be set to 0 to indicate that the PDCP discard mechanism shall be deactivated for the UE or the corresponding MAC entity. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect. The field “LCID” indicates a LCID value for identifying this MAC subheader.

[0112] FIG. 6B illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC subheader 600B for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-UE or per-MAC entity basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example MAC subheader for PDCP discard activation / deactivation is shown. As shown in FIG. 6B, the MAC subheader 600B may include a field “R” , a field “A / D” , a field “LCID” and a field “eLCID” . The field “eLCID” indicates an extended LCID value for identifying this MAC subheader. Details of other fields are similar as that described in FIG. 6A and thus are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0113] With reference to FIG. 5, in some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit 512 the MAC CE indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the terminal device 110 or the MAC entity of the terminal device 110. In other words, the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard on a per-UE or per-MAC entity basis via a MAC CE.

[0114] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a field indicating the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard. In some embodiments, a MAC subheader of the MAC CE may comprise an LCID or eLCID value indicating that the MAC CE is for the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard for the terminal device 110 or the MAC entity of the terminal device 110. For illustration, an example MAC CE will be described in connection with FIG. 6C below.

[0115] FIG. 6C illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating an example MAC CE 600C for an activation or deactivation of a packet discard on a per-UE or per-MAC entity basis according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example MAC CE for PDCP discard activation / deactivation is shown. As shown in FIG. 6C, the MAC CE 600C may include a field “A / D” and a field “R” .

[0116] The field “R” indicates a reserved bit.

[0117] Continuing to refer to FIG. 5, upon reception of the MAC CE or the MAC subheader, the terminal device 110 may activate or deactivate 520 the importance-based packet discard based on the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard.

[0118] With reference to FIG. 5, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate 521 the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard to a PDCP layer of a DRB which is configured with the importance-based packet discard or whose corresponding LCG is configured with the importance-based packet discard. If the activation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated, the PDCP layer may activate the importance-based packet discard. If the deactivation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated, the PDCP layer may deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0119] In other words, upon reception of the MAC CE or MAC subheader for packet discard activation / deactivation, a MAC entity may only indicate the activation / deactivation status to the PDCP layer of DRB or the DRB whose corresponding LCG configured with importance-based packet discard. For a DRB (or PDCP configuration) , a new field indicating whether the DRB shall perform importance-based packet discard may be configured by the network device 120.

[0120] For illustration, an example procedure of a MAC layer may be described as below.

[0121] The MAC entity shall for each DRB (or each DRB whose corresponding LCG) configured with importance-based PDCP discard:

[0122] 1> if a MAC CE or MAC subheader indicating activation / deactivation of importance-based packet discard is received:

[0123] 2> indicate upper layer (e.g., PDCP layer) to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard based on the corresponding activation / deactivation status.

[0124] For illustration, an example procedure of a PDCP layer may be described as below.

[0125] 1> if the indication of activation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) :

[0126] 2> PDCP entity shall activate / perform the importance-based packet discard (e.g., UE may choose which PSI to apply the new PDCP discardTimer  for lower importance) .

[0127] 1> if the indication of deactivation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) :

[0128] 2> PDCP entity shall deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0129] With reference to FIG. 5, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate 522 the status of the activation or deactivation of the importance-based packet discard to PDCP layers of all data radio bearers DRBs. If the activation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated and the importance-based packet discard for a first DRB or a first LCG corresponding to the first DRB is configured, a PDCP layer of the first DRB may activate the importance-based packet discard. If the deactivation of the importance-based packet discard is indicated and the importance-based packet discard for a second DRB or a second LCG corresponding to the second DRB is configured, a PDCP layer of the second DRB may deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0130] In other words, upon reception of the MAC CE or the MAC subheader for packet discard activation / deactivation, a MAC entity may indicate the activation / deactivation status to the PDCP layer of all DRBs.

[0131] For illustration, an example procedure of a MAC layer may be described as below.

[0132] 1> if a MAC CE or MAC subheader indicating activation / deactivation of importance-based packet discard is received:

[0133] 2> indicate upper layer (e.g., PDCP layer of all DRBs) to activate or deactivate the importance-based packet discard based on the corresponding activation / deactivation status.

[0134] For illustration, an example procedure of a PDCP layer may be described as below.

[0135] 1> if the indication of activation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (e.g., MAC layer) , and if importance-based PDCP discard for the DRB or the corresponding LCG is configured:

[0136] 2> PDCP entity shall activate / perform the importance-based packet discard (e.g., UE may choose which PSI to apply the new PDCP discardTimer for lower importance) .

[0137] 1> if the indication of deactivation of importance-based packet discard has been received from lower layer (MAC layer) and if importance-based PDCP discard  is configured:

[0138] 2> PDCP entity shall deactivate the importance-based packet discard.

[0139] With the process 500, an importance-based packet discard may be activated or deactivated in a granularity of a UE or MAC entity. It is to be understood that operations in the processes 200 and 500 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combination.

[0140] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF DELIVERY OF BUFFER STATUS TABLE INFORMATION

[0141] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution for delivering buffer status table information so as to indicate a selection of a buffer status table per LCG. The solution will be described in connection with FIGs. 7 to 10C below.

[0142] FIG. 7 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 700 of communication for BSR according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 700 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 700 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 7 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0143] As shown in FIG. 7, the terminal device 110 may generate 710 a MAC CE comprising information of a buffer status table selected for an LCG in a set of LCGs. In other words, the MAC CE may be introduced to indicate, from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120, the selection of the buffer status table per LCG. In some embodiments, the information of the buffer status table may comprise an index or identity of the buffer status table.

[0144] In some embodiments, a MAC subheader of the MAC CE may comprise an LCID or eLCID value indicating that the MAC CE is for the information of the buffer status table selected for the LCG. In other words, a MAC subheader with a new LCID or eLCID value shall be used to identify the MAC CE.

[0145] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a set of fields corresponding to the set of LCGs, and a field in the set of fields indicates the information of the buffer status table selected for an LCG corresponding to the field in the set of LCGs. In this way, a MAC CE dedicated for buffer status table selection may be defined. For illustration, an example MAC CE will be described in connection with FIG. 8A below.

[0146] FIG. 8A illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating an example MAC CE 800A for buffer status table selection according to embodiments of the present disclosure. An example BSR table selection MAC CE is shown. As shown in FIG. 8A, the MAC CE 800A may include fields LCGi, where i = 0 to 7.

[0147] The field LCGi indicates which buffer status table is selected for LCG i. The field LCGi is set to 1 to indicate that the new defined buffer status table is selected for LCG i. The field LCGi is set to 0 to indicate that the legacy buffer status table is selected for LCG i. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0148] In some embodiments, the set of LCGs may comprise a single LCG. In this case, the MAC CE may comprise a field indicating an ID of the single LCG and a field indicating the information of the buffer status table selected for the single LCG. For illustration, an example MAC CE will be described in connection with FIG. 8B below.
