Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive downlink control information indicating multiple transmission occasions for uplink communications by the UE, where the multiple transmission occasions are associated with a configured grant. In some cases, the UE may determine whether to include, in uplink control information (UCI), one or more indices associated with individual first transmission occasions, of the multiple transmission occasions, to be skipped by the UE, and may transmit the UCI based on the determining. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may transmit, via a second set of transmission occasions, of the multiple transmission occasions, used by the UE, an indication of the first set of transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE, where the second set of transmission occasions used by the UE are based on a slot pattern associated with the set of multiple transmission occasions.

[0076] In some wireless communications systems, a user equipment (UE) may be configured, via a single configured grant (CG) , with multiple uplink transmission occasions, or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmission occasions, that may be used by the UE to transmit uplink communications. In other words, multiple PUSCH occasions may be scheduled in a period of a single CG PUSCH configuration. However, in some cases, the UE may not transmit uplink communications via all of the multiple PUSCH occasions (e.g., may not use all of the multiple PUSCH occasions) . For example, a quantity of resources associated with uplink communications to be transmitted by the UE may be less than a quantity of resources allocated via the multiple PUSCH occasions. As such, the UE may transmit, via uplink control information (UCI) , an indication of one or more PUSCH occasions of the multiple PUSCH occasions that  the UE may skip (e.g., may not use to transmit uplink communications) , which may be referred to as unused PUSCH occasions. For example, the UE may transmit, via UCI in each used PUSCH occasion, a bitmap indicating which PUSCH occasions are used (e.g., indicated by a 0 bit) and which PUSCH occasions are unused (e.g., indicated by a 1 bit) . However, as described, the bitmap may include a bit for each PUSCH occasion of the multiple PUSCH occasions, whether used or unused, and, as such, as a quantity of PUSCH occasions in the multiple PUSCH occasions increases, so does overhead associated with transmitting a bitmap in each used PUSCH occasion of the multiple PUSCH occasions.

[0077] Accordingly, techniques described herein may enable a UE to reduce overhead associated with signaling unused PUSCH occasions. For example, in some cases, a UE may indicate, via UCI, one or more indices associated with respective unused PUSCH occasions (e.g., of the multiple PUSCH occasions) and may refrain from indicating used PUSCH occasions. In some cases, the one or more indices may be encoded according to a Hoffman encoding scheme to further reduce a quantity of bits associated with indicating the one or more indices. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may calculate a first quantity of bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions via the one or more indices (e.g., according to a first indication scheme) , may calculate a second quantity of bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions (e.g., and used PUSCH occasions) via a bitmap (e.g., according to a second indication scheme) , and may compare the first quantity of bits to the second quantity of bits, such that the UE may indicate, via the UCI, the unused PUSCH transmissions in accordance with the indication scheme associated with a smaller quantity of bits. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may determine which used PUSCH occasions (e.g., out of a set of used PUSCH occasions of the multiple PUSCH occasions) to use to transmit the UCI based on a slot pattern associated with the multiple PUSCH occasions.

[0078] Aspects of the disclosure are initially described in the context of wireless communications systems. Aspects of the disclosure are then described in the context of a timing diagram and process flows. Aspects of the disclosure are further illustrated by and described with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flowcharts that relate to techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI.

[0079] FIG. 1 shows an example of a wireless communications system 100 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more network entities 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communications system 100 may be a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, a New Radio (NR) network, or a network operating in accordance with other systems and radio technologies, including future systems and radio technologies not explicitly mentioned herein.

[0080] The network entities 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communications system 100 and may include devices in different forms or having different capabilities. In various examples, a network entity 105 may be referred to as a network element, a mobility element, a radio access network (RAN) node, or network equipment, among other nomenclature. In some examples, network entities 105 and UEs 115 may wirelessly communicate via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., a radio frequency (RF) access link) . For example, a network entity 105 may support a coverage area 110 (e.g., a geographic coverage area) over which the UEs 115 and the network entity 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which a network entity 105 and a UE 115 may support the communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies (RATs) .

[0081] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout a coverage area 110 of the wireless communications system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary, or mobile, or both at different times. The UEs 115 may be devices in different forms or having different capabilities. Some example UEs 115 are illustrated in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of supporting communications with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115 or network entities 105, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0082] As described herein, a node of the wireless communications system 100, which may be referred to as a network node, or a wireless node, may be a network entity 105 (e.g., any network entity described herein) , a UE 115 (e.g., any UE described herein) , a network controller, an apparatus, a device, a computing system, one or more components, or another suitable processing entity configured to perform any of the  techniques described herein. For example, a node may be a UE 115. As another example, a node may be a network entity 105. As another example, a first node may be configured to communicate with a second node or a third node. In one aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a UE 115. In another aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a network entity 105. In yet other aspects of this example, the first, second, and third nodes may be different relative to these examples. Similarly, reference to a UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, or the like may include disclosure of the UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, or the like being a node. For example, disclosure that a UE 115 is configured to receive information from a network entity 105 also discloses that a first node is configured to receive information from a second node.

[0083] In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or with one another, or both. For example, network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul communication links 120 (e.g., in accordance with an S1, N2, N3, or other interface protocol) . In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with one another via a backhaul communication link 120 (e.g., in accordance with an X2, Xn, or other interface protocol) either directly (e.g., directly between network entities 105) or indirectly (e.g., via a core network 130) . In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with one another via a midhaul communication link 162 (e.g., in accordance with a midhaul interface protocol) or a fronthaul communication link 168 (e.g., in accordance with a fronthaul interface protocol) , or any combination thereof. The backhaul communication links 120, midhaul communication links 162, or fronthaul communication links 168 may be or include one or more wired links (e.g., an electrical link, an optical fiber link) , one or more wireless links (e.g., a radio link, a wireless optical link) , among other examples or various combinations thereof. A UE 115 may communicate with the core network 130 via a communication link 155.

[0084] One or more of the network entities 105 described herein may include or may be referred to as a base station 140 (e.g., a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an NR base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a NodeB, an eNodeB  (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB or a giga-NodeB (either of which may be referred to as a gNB) , a 5G NB, a next-generation eNB (ng-eNB) , a Home NodeB, a Home eNodeB, or other suitable terminology) . In some examples, a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may be implemented in an aggregated (e.g., monolithic, standalone) base station architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically integrated within a single network entity 105 (e.g., a single RAN node, such as a base station 140) .

[0085] In some examples, a network entity 105 may be implemented in a disaggregated architecture (e.g., a disaggregated base station architecture, a disaggregated RAN architecture) , which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically distributed among two or more network entities 105, such as an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) , or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN) ) . For example, a network entity 105 may include one or more of a central unit (CU) 160, a distributed unit (DU) 165, a radio unit (RU) 170, a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) 175 (e.g., a Near-Real Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) , a Non-Real Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) ) , a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) 180 system, or any combination thereof. An RU 170 may also be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , or a transmission reception point (TRP) . One or more components of the network entities 105 in a disaggregated RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entities 105 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations) . In some examples, one or more network entities 105 of a disaggregated RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., a virtual CU (VCU) , a virtual DU (VDU) , a virtual RU (VRU) ) .

[0086] The split of functionality between a CU 160, a DU 165, and an RU 170 is flexible and may support different functionalities depending on which functions (e.g., network layer functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, RF functions, and any combinations thereof) are performed at a CU 160, a DU 165, or an RU 170. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between a CU 160 and a DU 165 such that the CU 160 may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the DU 165 may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. In some  examples, the CU 160 may host upper protocol layer (e.g., layer 3 (L3) , layer 2 (L2) ) functionality and signaling (e.g., Radio Resource Control (RRC) , service data adaption protocol (SDAP) , Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) ) . The CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170, and the one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170 may host lower protocol layers, such as layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signaling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160. Additionally, or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between a DU 165 and an RU 170 such that the DU 165 may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the RU 170 may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU 165 may support one or multiple different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs 170) . In some cases, a functional split between a CU 160 and a DU 165, or between a DU 165 and an RU 170 may be within a protocol layer (e.g., some functions for a protocol layer may be performed by one of a CU 160, a DU 165, or an RU 170, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of the CU 160, the DU 165, or the RU 170) . A CU 160 may be functionally split further into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. A CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 via a midhaul communication link 162 (e.g., F1, F1-c, F1-u) , and a DU 165 may be connected to one or more RUs 170 via a fronthaul communication link 168 (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface) . In some examples, a midhaul communication link 162 or a fronthaul communication link 168 may be implemented in accordance with an interface (e.g., a channel) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 105 that are in communication via such communication links.

[0087] In wireless communications systems (e.g., wireless communications system 100) , infrastructure and spectral resources for radio access may support wireless backhaul link capabilities to supplement wired backhaul connections, providing an IAB network architecture (e.g., to a core network 130) . In some cases, in an IAB network, one or more network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) may be partially controlled by each other. One or more IAB nodes 104 may be referred to as a donor entity or an IAB donor. One or more DUs 165 or one or more RUs 170 may be partially controlled by one or more CUs 160 associated with a donor network entity 105 (e.g., a donor base  station 140) . The one or more donor network entities 105 (e.g., IAB donors) may be in communication with one or more additional network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) via supported access and backhaul links (e.g., backhaul communication links 120) . IAB nodes 104 may include an IAB mobile termination (IAB-MT) controlled (e.g., scheduled) by DUs 165 of a coupled IAB donor. An IAB-MT may include an independent set of antennas for relay of communications with UEs 115, or may share the same antennas (e.g., of an RU 170) of an IAB node 104 used for access via the DU 165 of the IAB node 104 (e.g., referred to as virtual IAB-MT (vIAB-MT) ) . In some examples, the IAB nodes 104 may include DUs 165 that support communication links with additional entities (e.g., IAB nodes 104, UEs 115) within the relay chain or configuration of the access network (e.g., downstream) . In such cases, one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture (e.g., one or more IAB nodes 104 or components of IAB nodes 104) may be configured to operate according to the techniques described herein.

[0088] In the case of the techniques described herein applied in the context of a disaggregated RAN architecture, one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture may be configured to support techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI as described herein. For example, some operations described as being performed by a UE 115 or a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may additionally, or alternatively, be performed by one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture (e.g., IAB nodes 104, DUs 165, CUs 160, RUs 170, RIC 175, SMO 180) .

[0089] A UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable terminology, where the “device” may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. A UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, a UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communications (MTC) device, among other examples, which may be  implemented in various objects such as appliances, or vehicles, meters, among other examples.

[0090] The UEs 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115 that may sometimes act as relays as well as the network entities 105 and the network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, or relay base stations, among other examples, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0091] The UEs 115 and the network entities 105 may wirelessly communicate with one another via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., an access link) using resources associated with one or more carriers. The term “carrier” may refer to a set of RF spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting the communication links 125. For example, a carrier used for a communication link 125 may include a portion of a RF spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth part (BWP) ) that is operated according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR) . Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information) , control signaling that coordinates operation for the carrier, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communications system 100 may support communication with a UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. A UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) component carriers. Communication between a network entity 105 and other devices may refer to communication between the devices and any portion (e.g., entity, sub-entity) of a network entity 105. For example, the terms “transmitting, ” “receiving, ” or “communicating, ” when referring to a network entity 105, may refer to any portion of a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, a CU 160, a DU 165, a RU 170) of a RAN communicating with another device (e.g., directly or via one or more other network entities 105) .

[0092] Signal waveforms transmitted via a carrier may be made up of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM) ) . In a system employing MCM techniques, a resource element may  refer to resources of one symbol period (e.g., a duration of one modulation symbol) and one subcarrier, in which case the symbol period and subcarrier spacing may be inversely related. The quantity of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both) , such that a relatively higher quantity of resource elements (e.g., in a transmission duration) and a relatively higher order of a modulation scheme may correspond to a relatively higher rate of communication. A wireless communications resource may refer to a combination of an RF spectrum resource, a time resource, and a spatial resource (e.g., a spatial layer, a beam) , and the use of multiple spatial resources may increase the data rate or data integrity for communications with a UE 115.

[0093] The time intervals for the network entities 105 or the UEs 115 may be expressed in multiples of a basic time unit which may, for example, refer to a sampling period of Ts=1 /  (Δfmax·Nf) seconds, for which Δfmax may represent a supported subcarrier spacing, and Nf may represent a supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size. Time intervals of a communications resource may be organized according to radio frames each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms) ) . Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023) .

[0094] Each frame may include multiple consecutively-numbered subframes or slots, and each subframe or slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame may be divided (e.g., in the time domain) into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into a quantity of slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable quantity of slots, and the quantity of slots may depend on subcarrier spacing. Each slot may include a quantity of symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix prepended to each symbol period) . In some wireless communications systems 100, a slot may further be divided into multiple mini-slots associated with one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may be associated with one or more (e.g., Nf) sampling periods. The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or frequency band of operation.

[0095] A subframe, a slot, a mini-slot, or a symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communications system 100 and may be  referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI) . In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., a quantity of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally, or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communications system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in bursts of shortened TTIs (sTTIs) ) .

[0096] Physical channels may be multiplexed for communication using a carrier according to various techniques. A physical control channel and a physical data channel may be multiplexed for signaling via a downlink carrier, for example, using one or more of time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques, frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques, or hybrid TDM-FDM techniques. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET) ) for a physical control channel may be defined by a set of symbol periods and may extend across the system bandwidth or a subset of the system bandwidth of the carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a set of the UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search control regions for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or multiple control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. An aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to an amount of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs) ) associated with encoded information for a control information format having a given payload size. Search space sets may include common search space sets configured for sending control information to multiple UEs 115 and UE-specific search space sets for sending control information to a specific UE 115.

[0097] In some examples, a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) may be movable and therefore provide communication coverage for a moving coverage area 110. In some examples, different coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same network entity 105. In some other examples, the overlapping coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different network entities 105. The wireless communications system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of the network entities 105 provide coverage for various coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0098] The wireless communications system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable communications or low-latency communications, or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communications system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) . The UEs 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable, low-latency, or critical functions. Ultra-reliable communications may include private communication or group communication and may be supported by one or more services such as push-to-talk, video, or data. Support for ultra-reliable, low-latency functions may include prioritization of services, and such services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-latency, and ultra-reliable low-latency may be used interchangeably herein.

[0099] In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured to support communicating directly with other UEs 115 via a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., in accordance with a peer-to-peer (P2P) , D2D, or sidelink protocol) . In some examples, one or more UEs 115 of a group that are performing D2D communications may be within the coverage area 110 of a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) , which may support aspects of such D2D communications being configured by (e.g., scheduled by) the network entity 105. In some examples, one or more UEs 115 of such a group may be outside the coverage area 110 of a network entity 105 or may be otherwise unable to or not configured to receive transmissions from a network entity 105. In some examples, groups of the UEs 115 communicating via D2D communications may support a one-to-many (1: M) system in which each UE 115 transmits to each of the other UEs 115 in the group. In some examples, a network entity 105 may facilitate the scheduling of resources for D2D communications. In some other examples, D2D communications may be carried out between the UEs 115 without an involvement of a network entity 105.

[0100] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or 5G core (5GC) , which may include at least one control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management function (AMF) ) and at least one user plane entity that routes packets or  interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management for the UEs 115 served by the network entities 105 (e.g., base stations 140) associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be transferred through the user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation as well as other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to IP services 150 for one or more network operators. The IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, Intranet (s) , an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) , or a Packet-Switched Streaming Service.

[0101] The wireless communications system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, which may be in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz) . Generally, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is known as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from approximately one decimeter to one meter in length. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, which may be referred to as clusters, but the waves may penetrate structures sufficiently for a macro cell to provide service to the UEs 115 located indoors. Communications using UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to communications using the smaller frequencies and longer waves of the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0102] The wireless communications system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed RF spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communications system 100 may employ License Assisted Access (LAA) , LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology using an unlicensed band such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. While operating using unlicensed RF spectrum bands, devices such as the network entities 105 and the UEs 115 may employ carrier sensing for collision detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations using unlicensed bands may be based on a carrier aggregation configuration in conjunction with component carriers operating using a licensed band (e.g., LAA) . Operations using  unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, among other examples.

[0103] A network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) or a UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of a network entity 105 or a UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels, which may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some examples, antennas or antenna arrays associated with a network entity 105 may be located at diverse geographic locations. A network entity 105 may include an antenna array with a set of rows and columns of antenna ports that the network entity 105 may use to support beamforming of communications with a UE 115. Likewise, a UE 115 may include one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally, or alternatively, an antenna panel may support RF beamforming for a signal transmitted via an antenna port.

[0104] Beamforming, which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception, is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a network entity 105, a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining the signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array such that some signals propagating along particular orientations with respect to an antenna array experience constructive interference while others experience destructive interference. The adjustment of signals communicated via the antenna elements may include a transmitting device or a receiving device applying amplitude offsets, phase offsets, or both to signals carried via the antenna elements associated with the device. The adjustments associated with each of the antenna elements may be defined by a beamforming weight set associated with a particular orientation (e.g., with respect to the antenna array of the transmitting device or receiving device, or with respect to some other orientation) .

[0105] Wireless devices, such as UEs 115, may use Hoffman encoding (e.g., encoding according to Hoffman encoding scheme) to reduce a quantity of bits associated with indicating a value (e.g., as compared to simple (0, 1) indications) . For example, multiple states, such as 8 states from state 1 to state 8, may exist in a communication scenario. A Hoffman encoding scheme may consider a probability of each state of the multiple states occurring (e.g., appearing, being indicated) , such that states associated with a higher probability of occurrence may be encoded with short bits while states associated with a lower probability of appearance may be encoded with long bits. For example, as described previously, 8 states from state 1 to state 8 may exist and the states may be associated with a decreasing probability of appearance from state 8 to state 1, with state 8 being associated with a highest probability and state 1 being associated with a lowest probability. As such, state 1 may be associated with a value of 11111111, state 2 may be associated with a value of 1111110, state 3 may be associated with a value of 111110, state 4 may be associated with a value of 11110, state 5 may be associated with a value of 1110, state 6 may be associated with a value of 110, state 7 may be associated with a value of 10, and state 8 may be associated with a value of 0. As such, a given sequence may indicate 887765. Using pure 2-bit encoding, the sequence may be encoded as 111 111 110 110 101 100, which includes 18 bits. However, using Hoffman encoding, the sequency may be encoded as 0 0 10 10 110 1110, which includes 13 bits. Thus, overhead reduction using Hoffman encoding relative to 2-bit encoding for the given example may be 27.8%.

[0106] In some cases, the wireless communications system 100 may support techniques to enable a UE 115 to reduce overhead associated with signaling unused PUSCH occasions. For example, in some cases, a UE 115 may indicate, via UCI, one or more indices associated with respective unused PUSCH occasions (e.g., of the multiple PUSCH occasions) and may refrain from indicating used PUSCH occasions. In some cases, the one or more indices may be encoded according to a Hoffman encoding scheme. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 115 may calculate a first quantity of bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions via the one or more indices (e.g., according to a first indication scheme) , may calculate a second quantity of bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions (e.g., and used PUSCH occasions) via a bitmap (e.g., according to a second indication scheme) , and may  compare the first quantity of bits to the second quantity of bits, such that the UE 115 may indicate, via the UCI, the unused PUSCH transmissions in accordance with the indication scheme associated with a smaller quantity of bits. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 115 may determine which used PUSCH occasions (e.g., out of a set of used PUSCH occasions of the multiple PUSCH occasions) to use to transmit the UCI based on a slot pattern associated with the multiple PUSCH occasions.

[0107] FIG. 2 shows an example of a wireless communications system 200 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the wireless communications system 200 may implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100. For example, the wireless communications system 200 may be implemented by one or more network entities 105 (e.g., a network entity 105-a) and one or more UEs 115 (e.g., a UE 115-a) , which may be examples of the corresponding devices described herein with reference to FIG. 1.

[0108] In some wireless communications systems, such as the wireless communications system 200, a wireless device, such as the UE 115-a, may receive a control message, such as a DCI 205, indicating multiple uplink transmission occasions, which may be referred to as PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., PUSCH transmission occasions or CG PUSCH occasions) , associated with a CG. That is, the UE 115-a may be configured (e.g., via the DCI 205) with multiple PUSCH occasions 215 in a period of a single CG PUSCH configuration, such as a PUSCH occasion 215-a, a PUSCH occasion 215-b, a PUSCH occasion 215-c, a PUSCH occasion 215-d, a PUSCH occasion 215-e, a PUSCH occasion 215-f, and a PUSCH occasion 215-g. For example, a size of uplink communications (e.g., extended reality (XR) uplink video frames) transmitted by the UE 115-a may be of large and variable size, such that allocating (e.g., configuring) multiple PUSCH occasions 215 via a CG (e.g., CG-based multi-PUSCH) may enable the UE 115-a (e.g., an XR UE 115) to support (e.g., match) traffic metrics and avoid dynamic grant (DG) -based delays and overhead.

[0109] However, in some cases, the UE 115-a may not need all of the PUSCH occasions 215 for uplink communications. As such, the UE 115-a may indicate (e.g., dynamically) unused PUSCH occasions 215 via UCI 210 (e.g., CG UCI 210 or new UCI 210) . For example (e.g., when an UL XR video frame arrives) , the UE 115-a may  determine a quantity of resources associated with an upcoming uplink transmission (e.g., a number of PUSCHs needed to transmit an XR video frame based on a video frame size) and, based on the quantity of resources, may identify one or more PUSCH occasions 215, such as the PUSCH occasion 215-g and the PUSCH occasion 215-h, that will not be used by the UE 115-a (e.g. PUSCH occasions 215 to be skipped by the UE 115-a) . Thus, the UE 115-a may indicate, to the network entity 105-b, the one or more unused PUSCH occasions 215, such that the network entity 105-a may re-allocate (e.g., recycle) unused resources (e.g., CG resources) associated with the unused PUSCH occasions 215 to other UEs 115 (e.g., to avoid waiting resources and increase communication capacity) .

[0110] In some examples, a bitmap in the UCI 210 (e.g., unused transmission occasion UCI (UTO-UCI) 210) may indicate whether each of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., preconfigured PUSCH occasions) will be used or unused (e.g., not used) by the UE 115-a. For example, each PUSCH occasion 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 may be associated with a bit in a bitmap, where a value of 0 indicates the associated PUSCH occasion 215 is used (e.g., a used PUSCH occasion 215) and a value of 1 indicates that the associated PUSCH occasion 215 is unused (e.g., an unused PUSCH occasions 215) . Additionally, a length of the bitmap may be based on a scope of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., indicated PUSCH occasions 215) , which may be referred to as Nu. In other words, the bigger (e.g., greater) the Nu, the longer the bitmap. For example, in the context of FIG. 2, Nu may be equal to 8 (e.g., based on 8 configured PUSCH occasions 215) , such that a bitmap associated with indicating unused PUSCH occasions 215 may be no larger than 8 bits. For example, a bitmap in UCI 210-a transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-a may indicate {0000011} corresponding to the used PUSCH occasion 215-b (e.g., a first bit value of 0) , the used PUSCH occasion 215-c (e.g., a second bit value of 0) , the used PUSCH occasion 215-d (e.g., a third bit value of 0) , the used PUSCH occasion 215-e (e.g., a fourth bit value of 0) , the used PUSCH occasion 215-f (e.g., a fifth bit value of 0) , the unused PUSCH occasion 215-g (e.g., a sixth bit value of 1) , and the unused PUSCH occasion 215-h (e.g., a seventh bit value of 1) . However, as Nu increases so does signaling overhead for indicating unused PUSCH occasions 215, such that a large Nu results in heavy overhead.

[0111] Additionally, UCI 210 indicating whether each PUSCH occasion 215 is used or unused may be transmitted in each used PUSCH occasion 215 (e.g., resulting in increased redundancy) . For example, UCI 210-b transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-b may include a bitmap indicating {000011} , UCI 210-c transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-c may include a bitmap indicating {00011} , UCI 210-d transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-d may include a bitmap indicating {0011} , UCI 210-e transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-b may include a bitmap indicating {011} , and UCI 210-f transmitted via the used PUSCH occasion 215-f may include a bitmap indicating {11} . Thus, in the context of FIG. 2, the UE 115-amay use 27 bits to indicate the unused PUSCH occasions 215 via the UCI 210, resulting in further increases in signaling overhead.

[0112] Accordingly, techniques described herein may enable a UE 115 to reduce overhead associated with signaling unused PUSCH occasions 215. For example, the UE 115-a may transmit UCI 210 indicating one or more unused PUSCH occasions 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 and may refrain from indicating used PUSCH occasions 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions in the UCI 210 (e.g., the UE 115-a may only indicate unused PUSCH occasions 215) . Additionally, the indication of the one or more unused PUSCH occasions 215 may be via respective indices. In other words, the UE 115-a may index each PUSCH occasion 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 according to a respective position within the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., after determining Nu) . For example, the PUSCH occasion 215-a (e.g., a first PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 1, the PUSCH occasion 215-b (e.g., a second PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 2, the PUSCH occasion 215-c (e.g., a third PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 3, the PUSCH occasion 215-d (e.g., a fourth PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 4, the PUSCH occasion 215-e (e.g., a fifth PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 5, the PUSCH occasion 215-f (e.g., a sixth PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 6, the PUSCH occasion 215-g (e.g., a seventh PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 7, and the PUSCH occasion 215-h (e.g., an eighth PUSCH occasion) may be associated with an index of 8.

[0113] Additionally, each index may be associated with an equal quantity of bits based on a quantity of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215. For example, 3 bits may be  sufficient for 8 PUSCH occasions 215. As such, the index of 1 may be associated with a value of the 3 bits of 000, the index of 2 may be associated with a value of the 3 bits of 001, the index of 3 may be associated with a value of the 3 bits of 010, and so on, where each index is associated with a different combination (e.g., order-dependent) of 3 bits. Thus, the UE 115-a may identify one or more unused PUSCH occasions 215, such as the unused PUSCH occasion 215-g and the unused PUSCH occasion 215-h, and may transmit UCI 210 indicating respective indices associated with the unused PUSCH occasions 215. For example, to indicate the unused PUSCH occasion 215-g and the unused PUSCH occasion 215-h, the UE 115-a may transmit, via UCI 210, an indication of the index of 7 (e.g., 110) and the index of 8 (e.g., 111) via an indicator of {110 111} , which includes 6 bits (e.g., as compared to 27 bits) .

[0114] Additionally, or alternatively, the one or more indices may be encoded according to a Hoffman encoding scheme (e.g. rather than each index being associated with an equal quantity of bits) . For example, as described above, the UE 115-a may index each PUSCH occasion 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 according to a respective position within the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., after determining Nu) . Additionally, the UE 115-a may encode the indices associated with the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 according to a Hoffman encoding scheme. In such cases, later PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., in a time domain) of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 may be associated with a higher probability of not being used by the UE 115-a (e.g., being skipped, being unused PUSCH occasions 215) as compared to earlier PUSCH occasions 215 of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215. Accordingly, the UE 115-a may encode the indices according to the Hoffman encoding scheme in a reverse order from a last, or end index, to a first, or starting index. For example, in the context of FIG. 2, the UE 115-a may encode the indices associated with the PUSCH occasions in the order of 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, where the index of 8 is associated with 1 bit, and each descending index may be associated with an additional bit (e.g., index 7 is associated with 2 bits, index 6 is associated with 3 bits, and so on) .

[0115] Thus, the UE 115-a may identify one or more unused PUSCH occasions 215, such as the unused PUSCH occasion 215-g and the unused PUSCH occasion 215-h, and may transmit UCI 210 indicating respective Hoffman encoded indices associated with the unused PUSCH occasions 215. For example, to indicate the unused PUSCH  occasion 215-g and the unused PUSCH occasion 215-h, the UE 115-a may transmit, via UCI 210, an indication of the Hoffman encoded index of 7 (e.g., 10) and the Hoffman encoded index of 8 (e.g., 0) via an indicator of {10 0} , which includes 3 bits (e.g., as compared to 27 bits or 6 bits) .

[0116] In either case (e.g., using or not using Hoffman encoding) , the UE 115-amay transmit the indication of the one or more indices (e.g., Hoffman encoded indices or 2-bit encoded indices) correspond to the unused PUSCH occasions 215 via UCI 210 in a subset of the used PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g. instead of via each used PUSCH occasions 215) . For example, the UE 115-a may transmit a single repetition of {10 0} (e.g., or {110 111} ) via UCI 210, such as via the UCI 210-a, which may result in 3 bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions 215. In another example, to support transmission reliability, the UE 115-a may transmit 2 repetitions of {10 0} via UCI 210, such as via the UCI 210-a and the UCI 210-b, which may result in 6 bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions 215. In other words, each of the UCI 210-a and the UCI 210-b may indicate {10 0} . In another example, the UE 115-a may transmit 3 repetitions of {10 0} via UCI 210, such as via the UCI 210-a, the UCI 210-b, and the UCI 210-c, which may result in 9 bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions 215. In other words, each of the UCI 210-a, the UCI 210-b, and the UCI 210-c may indicate {10 0} .

[0117] According to the indication scheme utilizing Hoffman encoding, the later the unused PUSCH occasions 215 in the multiple PUSCH occasions, the more bits can be reduced using the Hoffman encoded indices (e.g., as compared to 2-bit methods) . Additionally, or alternatively, the less unused PUSCH occasions 215, the more bits can be reduced using the Hoffman encoded indices (e.g., as compared to 2-bit methods) . For example, in the context of FIG. 2, in some cases, the UE 115-a may transmit the UCI 210-a indicating {10 0} , which uses 3 bits. Additionally (e.g., for redundancy) , the UE 115-a may transmit the UCI 210-b indicating {10 0} , which also uses 3 bits, resulting in a total overhead of 6 bits. In another example, not depicted, the UE 115-a may determine that the used PUSCH occasion 215-f may actually be skipped by the UE 115-a (e.g., unused) , such that 3 PUSCH occasions are unused. In such cases, the UE 115-amay transmit the UCI 210-a indicating {110 10 0} , which uses 6 bits, and additionally (e.g., for redundancy) , the UE 115-a may transmit the UCI 210-b indicating {110 10 0} ,  which also uses 6 bits, resulting in a total overhead of 12 bits. Thus, increasing the unused PUSCH occasion 215 by 1 unused PUSCH occasion 215 (e.g., from 2 unused PUSCH occasions 215, as depicted, to 3 unused PUSCH occasions, not depicted) may result in double the overhead.

[0118] Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 115-a may compare quantities of bits associated with indicating the unused PUSCH occasions 215 according to different indication schemes, and select the indication scheme associated with a smallest quantity of bits. For example, a first indication scheme may be associated with indicating, via UCI 210, respective Hoffman encoded indices associated with the unused PUSCH occasions 215, as described previously. Additionally, a second indication scheme may be associated with indicating, via UCI 210, a bitmap that further indicates whether each of the multiple PUSCH occasions 215 (e.g., preconfigured PUSCH occasions 215) will be used or unused (e.g., not used) by the UE 115-a (e.g., legacy bitmap) .

[0119] For example (not depicted) , Nu may be equal to 8 (e.g., 8 PUSCH occasions 215) where the first 4 PUSCH occasions 215 are used PUSCH occasions 215 and the last 4 PUSCH occasions 215 are unused PUSCH occasions 215. As such the UE 115-amay determine that the unused PUSCH occasions 215 may be indicated by {1110 110 10 0} according to the first indication scheme and indicated by {00001111} according to the second communication scheme. Thus, the UE 115-a may calculate that the first indication scheme uses 10 bits while the second indication scheme uses 8 bits, such that the UE 115-a may select the second indication scheme and transmit, via UCI 210, an indication of both the used PUSCH occasions 215 and the unused PUSCH occasions 215 via {00001111} . In other words, the UE 115-a may evaluate a quantity of unused PUSCH occasions 215 in advance (e.g., prior to indication via UCI 210) , such that the UE 115-a may select (e.g., autonomously) an indication scheme based on the quantity of unused PUSCH occasions 215.

[0120] Additionally, the UE 115-a may include, in the UCI 210, an identifier that indicates which indication scheme is used by the UE 115-a (e.g., which indication scheme is selected) . For example, an identifier value of 1 may indicate the first indication scheme (e.g., Hoffman encoded indices) is selected and an identifier value of 0 may indicate the second indication scheme (e.g., bitmap) is selected. Continuing with the previously example, the UE 115-a may transmit a bitmap of {000001111} via the  UCI 210, where the first “0” is the identifier and indicates the second indication scheme is selected.

[0121] Though depicted in the context of 6 used PUSCH occasions 215 and 2 unused PUSCH occasions 215, this is not to be regarded as a limitation of the present disclosure. In this regard, the DCI 205 may configure any quantity of PUSCH occasions 215, of which, the UE 115-a may use (e.g., or not use) any quantity of the PUSCH occasions.

[0122] FIGs. 3A and 3B each show an example of a slot pattern 300 (e.g., a slot pattern 300-a and a slot pattern 300-b) that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the slot patterns 300 may implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, or both. For example, the slot patterns 300 may be implemented by one or more network entities 105 and one or more UEs 115, which may be examples of the corresponding devices described herein with reference to FIG. 1.

[0123] In some examples, to reduce overhead associated with signaling unused PUSCH occasions of multiple transmission occasions, a UE 115 may determine (e.g., dynamically designate) at least a subset of used PUSCH occasions over which to transmit UCI indicating the unused PUSCH occasions based on a slot pattern of the multiple transmission occasions. That is, as described previously, transmitting UCI (e.g., UTO-UCI) indicating unused PUSCH occasions (e.g., and used PUSCH occasions) in each used PUSCH of multiple PUSCH occasions may result in increased signaling overhead. Additionally, in some cases, a duration between a first UE 115 transmitting UCI indicating an unused PUSCH occasion and the unused PUSCH occasion may be less than a threshold, such that a second UE 115 may not have sufficient time to receive a DCI scheduling a transmission by the second UE 115 on the unused PUSCH occasion, blind decode the DCI, and perform the transmission on the unused PUSCH occasion. In other words, the unused PUSCH occasion may not be re-allocated or recycled for the second UE 115, even though the first UE 115 transmitted the UCI indicating the unused PUSCH occasion (e.g., the UCI is useless) . As such, the UE 115 may determine which of the used PUSCH occasions to use to transmit UCI  indicating the unused PUSCH occasions based on a threshold duration between the UCI and the unused PUSCH occasions.

[0124] That is, as described previously, a threshold duration, K2, may be associated with a UE 115 receiving a scheduling DCI, blind decoding the DCI, and transmitting a corresponding PUSCH (e.g., scheduled by the DCI) . As such, a duration (e.g., interval D) between UCI indicating an unused PUSCH occasion and the unused PUSCH occasion may be greater than the threshold duration, K2. In such cases, the interval, D, may be based on a slot pattern associated with multiple PUSCH occasions. For example, as depicted in FIG. 3A, the slot pattern 300-a may include 3 sets of slots, where each set of slots includes a downlink slot 305, a special slot 315 (e.g., flexible slot) , and 3 continuous, or consecutive, uplink slots 310 (e.g., DSUUU DSUUU DSUUU) , where each uplink slot 310 is associated with a PUSCH occasion. That is, a DCI may indicate 9 PUSCH occasions associated with a CG, where an uplink slot 310-amay be associated with a first PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-b may be associated with a second PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-c may be associated with an third PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-d may be associated with a fourth PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-e may be associated with a fifth PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-f may be associated with a sixth PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-g may be associated with a seven occasion, an uplink slot 310-h may be associated with an first PUSCH occasion, and an uplink slot 310-i may be associated with a ninth PUSCH occasion. As such, the slot pattern 300-a may be characterized by 3 sets of 3 consecutive PUSCH occasions.

[0125] As such, UCI transmitted in later PUSCH occasions may not be useful based on the threshold duration, K2. For example, the seventh PUSCH occasion, the eight PUSCH occasion, and the ninth PUSCH occasion may be skipped by the UE 115, such that the UE 115 may transmit UCI indicating the seventh PUSCH occasion, the eight PUSCH occasion, and the ninth PUSCH occasion are unused PUSCH occasions. However, a duration between the uplink slot 310-e associated with a used PUSCH occasion (e.g., the fifth PUSCH occasion) and the uplink slot 310-g associated with an unused PUSCH occasion (e.g., the seventh PUSCH occasion) may be less than the threshold duration, K2, such that if the UE 115 transmits UCI via the uplink slot 310-e indicating the seventh PUSCH occasion, the eight PUSCH occasion, and the ninth  PUSCH occasion are unused PUSCH occasions, a network entity 105 may not be able to re-allocate the uplink slot 310-g. As such, the UE 115 may refrain from transmitting the UCI indicating the seventh PUSCH occasion, the eight PUSCH occasion, and the ninth PUSCH occasion are unused PUSCH occasions in the uplink slot 310-e and the uplink slot 310-f.

[0126] In some examples, the UE 115 may determine to transmit UCI indicating unused PUSCH occasions in a first quantity, M, of used PUSCH occasions, such that remaining PUSCH occasions (e.g., Nu-M PUSCH occasions) do not carry UCI indicating unused PUSCH occasions. For example, M may be 3 used PUSCH occasions such that the UE 115 transmits the UCI indicating the seventh PUSCH occasion, the eight PUSCH occasion, and the ninth PUSCH occasion are unused PUSCH occasions in the uplink slot 310-a, the uplink slot 310-b, and the uplink slot 310-c (e.g., and not in the uplink slot 310-d, the uplink slot 310-e, and the uplink slot 310-f, even though the uplink slot 310-d, the uplink slot 310-e, and the uplink slot 310-f are associated with used PUSCH occasions) . In some cases, M may be based on Nu, K2, and D (e.g., a function of (Nu, K2, and D) ) . Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 115 may receive, from a network entity, a control message (e.g., RRC, MAC-CE, or DCI) indicating M (e.g., a configured value of M) .

[0127] In some other examples, as depicted in FIG. 3B, the slot pattern 300-b may include 3 sets of slots, where each set of slots includes 3 downlink slots 305, a special slot 315 (e.g., flexible slot) , and an uplink slot 310 (e.g., DDDSU DDDSU DDDSU) , where each uplink slot 310 is associated with a PUSCH occasion. That is, a DCI may indicate 3 PUSCH occasions associated with a CG, where an uplink slot 310-i may be associated with a first PUSCH occasion, an uplink slot 310-k may be associated with a second PUSCH occasion, and an uplink slot 310-l may be associated with an third PUSCH occasion. As such, the slot pattern 300-b may be characterized by distributed PUSCH occasions (e.g., no consecutive PUSCH occasions) . In such cases, UCI transmitted in later PUSCH occasions may be useful based on the threshold duration, K2, being exceeded. That is, respective durations between the uplink slots 310 (e.g., associated with PUSCH occasions) may exceed the threshold duration, K2, such that UCI transmitted via an uplink slot 310 (e.g., any uplink slot 310) indicating a PUSCH occasion associated with a subsequent uplink slot 310 is unused may enable a network  entity 105 to re-allocate the subsequent uplink slot 310 (e.g. since a duration between the uplink slot 310 and the subsequent uplink slot 310 may enable the network entity 105 to perform DG scheduling) .

[0128] For example, the uplink slot 310-l may be associated with an unused PUSCH occasion (e.g., the third PUSCH occasion) , such that UCI indicating the unused PUSCH occasion may be transmitted via the uplink slot 310-j and via the uplink slot 310-k based on a first duration between the uplink slot 310-j and the uplink slot 310-l, as well as a second duration between the uplink slot 310-k and the uplink slot 310-l, exceeding the threshold duration, K2.

[0129] Though described in the context of UCI indicating unused PUSCH occasions, this is not to be regarded as a limitation of the present disclosure. In this regard, any indication scheme (e.g., one or more un-encoded indices indicating unused PUSCH occasions, one or more Hoffman encoded indices indicating unused PUSCH occasions, one or more bitmaps indicating both used and unused PUSCH occasions, or the like thereof) may be considered with regards to techniques described herein.

[0130] FIG. 4 shows an example of a process flow 400 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the process flow 400 may implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, the slot patterns 300, or any combination thereof. For example, the process flow 400 may be implemented by one or more network entities 105 (e.g., a network entity 105-b) and one or more UEs 115 (e.g., a UE 115-b) , which may be examples of the corresponding devices described herein with reference to FIG. 1.

[0131] At 405, the UE 115-b may receive, from the network entity 105-b, a control message (e.g., DCI) that indicates multiple transmission occasions (e.g., PUSCH occasions) for uplink communications by the UE 115-b, where the multiple transmission occasions are associated with a CG. In other words, the CG may allocate, to the UE 115-b, resources associated with the multiple transmission occasions for the UE 115-b to use to transmit uplink signaling to the network entity 105-b.

[0132] In some cases, at 410, the UE 115-b may identify a set of indices associated with the multiple transmission occasions. Each index of the set of indices may include a quantity of bits indicating relative positions of each transmission occasions (e.g., of the multiple transmission occasions) within the multiple transmission occasions.

[0133] In some cases, at 415, and may encode the set of indices according to a Hoffman encoding scheme to generate a set of encoded indices. That is, the UE 115-b may encode the set of indices in a reverse order in which a first index of the set of indices is associated with a last transmission occasion of the multiple transmission occasions (e.g., in a time domain) and a last index of the set of indices is associated with a first transmission occasion of the multiple transmission occasions (e.g. in the time domain) . In such cases, a quantity of bits of each index of the set of indices may decrement from the first index to the last index. That is, the first index associated with the last transmission occasion may include 1 bit, a second index associated with a second to last transmission occasion of the multiple transmission occasions (e.g., in the time domain) may be associated with 2 bits, and so on, where the last index associated with the first transmission occasion is associated with a greatest quantity of bits (e.g., out of the set of indices) .

[0134] For example, the multiple transmission occasions may include 8 transmission occasions, where a first transmission occasion of the multiple transmission occasions occurs first in the time domain and an eight transmission occasion of the multiple transmission occasions occurs last in the time domain. As such, a first index may be associated with the eighth transmission occasion and may include 1 bit, a second index may be associated with a seventh transmission occasion (e.g., of the multiple transmission occasions) and may include 2 bits, and so one, until an eight index associated with the first transmission occasion, where the eight index includes 8 bits.

[0135] In some cases, at 420, the UE 115-b may calculate a first quantity of bits associated with indicating respective individual upcoming transmission occasions (e.g., of the multiple transmission occasions) that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b in accordance with a first communication scheme, where the first communication scheme utilizes the set of encoded indices. That is, the UE 115-b may identify one or more respective individual upcoming transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b. Additionally, the UE 115-b may  identify, for each of the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b, an index of the set of encoded indices (e.g., corresponding to the respective individual upcoming transmission occasion) and a quantity of bits associated with the index. Thus, the UE 115-b may sum the quantities of bits associated with the one or more identified indices to calculate the first quantity of bits. In some cases, the first quantity of bits may be based on a quantity of transmission occasions used to transmit UCI indicating the identified indices.

[0136] Similarly, at 425, the UE 115-b may calculate a second quantity of bits associated with indicating respective individual upcoming transmission occasions (e.g., of the multiple transmission occasions) that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b in accordance with a second communication scheme, where the second communication scheme utilizes a bitmap (e.g., legacy communication scheme) . That is, the bitmap may indicate the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE 115-b, as well as respective individual transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions to be used by the UE 115-b. In other words, the bitmap may indicate which transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions are to be used by the UE 115-b and which transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions are to be skipped by the UE 115-b. Thus, the UE 115-b may identify the second quantity of bits in the bitmap. In some cases, the second quantity of bits may be based on the quantity of transmission occasions used to transmit UCI indicating the bitmap.

[0137] At 430, the UE 115-b may compare the first quantity of bits to the second quantity of bits to determine (e.g., at 435) whether to include, in UCI, the identified indices or the bitmap.

[0138] At 435, the UE 115-b may determine whether to include, in UCI, one or more indices that are each associated with the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b.

[0139] In some cases, the determination of whether to include the one or more indices may be based on a configuration of the UE 115-b (e.g., the determination may be inherent, or implicit) . That is, the UE 115-b may be configured to include (e.g., always) the one or more indices associated with the respective individual upcoming  transmission occasions that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b. In such cases, the one or more indices may be from the set of indices or the set of encoded indices (e.g., depending on the configuration of the UE 115-b) .

[0140] In some other cases, the determination of whether to include the one or more indices may be based on the comparison of the first quantity of bits and the second quantity of bits. That is, in some cases, the first quantity of bits may be greater than the second quantity of bits, such that the UE 115-b determines to include the bitmap in the UCI. Alternatively, the first quantity of bits may be less than the second quantity of bits, such that the UE 115-b determines to include the identified indices (e.g., from the set of encoded indices) int eh UCI.

[0141] At 440, the UE 115-b may transmit, to the network entity 105-b, the UCI indicating the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions that are to be skipped by the UE 115-b based on the determination. In such cases, the indication of the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE 115-b may be transmitted via the UCI in each transmission occasion of a subset of used transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions, where the used transmission occasions are used by the UE 115-b for the uplink communications.

[0142] In other words, in some cases, the UE 115-b may transmit, via the UCI, the one or more indices (e.g., Hoffman encoded or not) that are each associated with the respective individual upcoming transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions (e.g., based on the configuration of the UE 115-b or based on the first quantity of bits being less than the second quantity of bits) . In some other cases, the UE 115-b may transmit, via the UCI, the bitmap (e.g., based on the first quantity of bits being greater than the second quantity of bits) .

[0143] In some cases (e.g., based on the comparison) , the UCI may indicate an identifier that is indicate of whether the UCI includes the one or more indices or the bitmap. That is, a first identifier may be associated with the first communication scheme (e.g., indicating the one or more indices are included) and a second identifier may be associated with the second communication scheme (e.g., indicating the bitmap is included) .

[0144] FIG. 5 shows an example of a process flow 500 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the process flow 500 may implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, the slot patterns 300, the process flow 400, or any combination thereof. For example, the process flow 500 may be implemented by one or more network entities 105 (e.g., a network entity 105-c) and one or more UEs 115 (e.g., a UE 115-c) , which may be examples of the corresponding devices described herein with reference to FIG. 1.

[0145] In some cases, at 505, the UE 115-c may receive, from the network entity 105-c, a first control message (e.g., RRC, DCI, or MAC-CE) indicating a threshold quantity of transmission occasions at a beginning of multiple transmission occasions that may be used by the UE 115-c to transmit UCI. In such cases, the threshold quantity may be based on a threshold duration between indicating a “to-be-skipped” transmission occasions and the “to-be-skipped” transmission occasion, a processing time between receiving a scheduling control message and a corresponding uplink transmission associated with the scheduling control message, a quantity of transmission occasions in the multiple transmission occasions, or any combination thereof.

[0146] At 510, the UE 115-c may receive, from the network entity 105-c, a first control message (e.g., DCI) that indicates multiple transmission occasions (e.g., PUSCH occasions) for uplink communications by the UE 115-c, where the multiple transmission occasions are associated with a CG. In other words, the CG may allocate, to the UE 115-c, resources associated with the multiple transmission occasions for the UE 115-c to use to transmit uplink signaling to the network entity 105-c.

[0147] In some cases, at 515, the UE 115-c may identify a first set of transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions to be used by the UE 115-c to transmit uplink communications and a second set of transmission occasions of the multiple transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE 115-c.

[0148] Additionally, the UE 115-c may identify a third set of transmission occasions from the first set of transmission occasions (e.g., a subset of the first set of transmission occasions) to be used by the UE 115-c to transmit UCI, where the UCI indicates the  second set of transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE 115-c. In such cases, the third set of transmission occasions may be based on a slot pattern associated with the multiple transmission occasions. That is, the third set of transmission occasions may identified based on a duration between each transmission occasion of the third set of transmission occasions and a first transmission occasion of the second set of transmission occasions. In other words, UCI indicating a “to-be-skipped” transmission occasions may be at least the threshold duration prior to the “to-be-skipped” transmission occasion.

[0149] In some examples, the slot pattern may include one or more sets of uplink slots that are continuous in a time domain. In such cases, the UE 115-b may identify the third set of transmission occasions based on the threshold quantity of transmission occasions at the beginning of the multiple transmission occasions in the time domain (e.g., indicated via the first control message) . In other words, the third set of transmission occasions may include the threshold quantity of transmission occasions at the beginning of the multiple transmission occasions in the time domain. In some other examples, the slot pattern may include one or more sets of uplink slots that are dis-continuous in the time domain. In such cases, the third set of transmission occasions may include each transmission occasion of the first set of transmission occasions used by the UE 115-c.

[0150] At 520, the UE 115-c may transmit, to the network entity 105-c, via the third set of transmission occasions, an indication of the second set of transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE 115-c.

[0151] FIG. 6 shows a block diagram 600 of a device 605 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The device 605 may be an example of aspects of a UE 115 as described herein. The device 605 may include a receiver 610, a transmitter 615, and a communications manager 620. The device 605, or one or more components of the device 605 (e.g., the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, and the communications manager 620) , may include at least one processor, which may be coupled with at least one memory, to, individually or collectively, support or enable the described techniques. Each of these components may be in communication with one another (e.g., via one or more buses) .

[0152] The receiver 610 may provide a means for receiving information such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, information channels related to techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI) . Information may be passed on to other components of the device 605. The receiver 610 may utilize a single antenna or a set of multiple antennas.

[0153] The transmitter 615 may provide a means for transmitting signals generated by other components of the device 605. For example, the transmitter 615 may transmit information such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, information channels related to techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI) . In some examples, the transmitter 615 may be co-located with a receiver 610 in a transceiver module. The transmitter 615 may utilize a single antenna or a set of multiple antennas.

[0154] The communications manager 620, the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, or various combinations thereof or various components thereof may be examples of means for performing various aspects of techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI as described herein. For example, the communications manager 620, the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, or various combinations or components thereof may be capable of performing one or more of the functions described herein.

[0215] Additionally, or alternatively, the communications manager 1120 may support wireless communications in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The DCI component 1125 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting DCI that indicates a set of multiple transmission occasions for uplink communications by a UE, where the set of multiple transmission occasions are associated with a configured grant. The feedback component 1130 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving, via a first set of transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions used by the UE, an indication of a second set of transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE, where the first set of transmission occasions is based on a slot pattern associated with the set of multiple transmission occasions.

[0216] FIG. 12 shows a block diagram 1200 of a communications manager 1220 that supports techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The communications  manager 1220 may be an example of aspects of a communications manager 1020, a communications manager 1120, or both, as described herein. The communications manager 1220, or various components thereof, may be an example of means for performing various aspects of techniques for indicating unused transmission occasions using UCI as described herein. For example, the communications manager 1220 may include a DCI component 1225 a feedback component 1230, or any combination thereof. Each of these components, or components or subcomponents thereof (e.g., one or more processors, one or more memories) , may communicate, directly or indirectly, with one another (e.g., via one or more buses) which may include communications within a protocol layer of a protocol stack, communications associated with a logical channel of a protocol stack (e.g., between protocol layers of a protocol stack, within a device, component, or virtualized component associated with a network entity 105, between devices, components, or virtualized components associated with a network entity 105) , or any combination thereof.

[0217] The communications manager 1220 may support wireless communications in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The DCI component 1225 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting DCI that indicates a set of multiple transmission occasions for uplink communications by a UE, where the set of multiple transmission occasions are associated with a configured grant. The feedback component 1230 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving, via UCI, an indication of one or more upcoming transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions, where receipt of the indication is indicative that the one or more upcoming transmission occasions are to be skipped by the UE, and where the indication includes one or more indices that are each associated with respective ones of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions or the indication includes an identifier that is indicative of whether the indication includes the one or more indices.

[0218] In some examples, the indication includes the one or more indices that are each associated with respective ones of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions.

[0219] In some examples, each of the one or more indices includes a quantity of bits indicating relative positions of the respective ones of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions within the set of multiple transmission occasions.

[0220] In some examples, the one or more indices are from a set of multiple indices associated with the set of multiple transmission occasions. In some examples, the set of multiple indices are encoded according to a Hoffman encoding scheme.

[0221] In some examples, the set of multiple indices are encoded in a reverse order, with a first index of the set of multiple indices associated with a last transmission occasion of the set of multiple transmission occasions and with a last index of the set of multiple indices associated with a first transmission occasion of the set of multiple transmission occasions.

[0222] In some examples, a first index of the set of multiple indices associated with a last transmission occasion of the set of multiple transmission occasions includes one bit. In some examples, each index of the set of multiple indices associated with other transmission occasion of the set of multiple transmission occasions includes multiple bits.

[0223] In some examples, the indication includes the identifier that is indicative of whether the indication includes the one or more indices. In some examples, the identifier is associated with a first communication scheme or a second communication scheme. In some examples, the first communication scheme is associated with indicating the one or more indices.

[0224] In some examples, a first quantity of bits is associated with indicating the one or more upcoming transmission occasions in accordance with the first communication scheme and a second quantity of bits is associated with indicating the one or more upcoming transmission occasions in accordance with the second communication scheme. In some examples, indicating the one or more indices or the identifier is based on a comparison of the first quantity of bits with the second quantity of bits.

[0225] In some examples, the first quantity of bits and the second quantity of bits are based on a quantity of transmission occasions used to transmit the UCI.

[0226] In some examples, to support receiving the indication of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions, the feedback component 1230 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving, via the UCI, the identifier associated with the first communication scheme based on the first quantity of bits being less than the second quantity of bits.

[0227] In some examples, to support receiving the indication of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions, the feedback component 1230 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving, via the UCI, the identifier associated with the second communication scheme based on the first quantity of bits being greater than the second quantity of bits.

[0228] In some examples, the one or more indices are selected from a set of multiple Hoffman encoded indices.

[0229] In some examples, the second communication scheme is associated with indicating a bitmap, the bitmap indicating the one or more upcoming transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE and one or more transmission occasions to be used by the UE.

[0230] In some examples, the indication of the one or more upcoming transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions is received via the UCI in each transmission occasion of a subset of used transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions. In some examples, the used transmission occasions are used by the UE for the uplink communications.

[0231] Additionally, or alternatively, the communications manager 1220 may support wireless communications in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. In some examples, the DCI component 1225 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting DCI that indicates a set of multiple transmission occasions for uplink communications by a UE, where the set of multiple transmission occasions are associated with a configured grant. In some examples, the feedback component 1230 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving, via a first set of transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions used by the UE, an indication of a second set of transmission occasions of the set of multiple transmission occasions to be skipped by the UE, where the first set of  transmission occasions is based on a slot pattern associated with the set of multiple transmission occasions.

[0232] In some examples, the first set of transmission occasions is further based on a threshold duration between each transmission occasion of the first set of transmission occasions and a first transmission occasions of the second set of transmission occasions.

[0233] In some examples, the slot pattern includes one or more sets of uplink slots that are continuous in a time domain.

[0234] In some examples, the first set of transmission occasions includes a quantity of transmission occasions at a beginning of the set of multiple transmission occasions in a time domain.

[0235] In some examples, the quantity is based on the threshold duration, a processing time between receiving a scheduling control message and a corresponding uplink transmission associated with the scheduling control message, a quantity of transmission occasions in the set of multiple transmission occasions, or any combination thereof.

[0236] In some examples, the DCI component 1225 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting, to the UE, a control message indicating the quantity.

[0237] In some examples, the control message is a second DCI message, an RRC message, a MAC-CE message, or any combination thereof.

[0238] In some examples, the slot pattern includes one or more uplink slots that are dis-continuous in a time domain.

[0239] In some examples, the first set of transmission occasions includes each transmission occasion of the set of multiple transmission occasions used by the UE.

[0334] Computer-readable media includes both non-transitory computer storage media and communication media including any medium that facilitates transfer of a computer program from one location to another. A non-transitory storage medium may be any available medium that may be accessed by a general-purpose or special-purpose computer. By way of example, and not limitation, non-transitory computer-readable media may include RAM, ROM, electrically erasable programmable ROM (EEPROM) , flash memory, compact disk (CD) ROM or other optical disk storage, magnetic disk storage or other magnetic storage devices, or any other non-transitory medium that may be used to carry or store desired program code means in the form of instructions or data structures and that may be accessed by a general-purpose or special-purpose computer, or a general-purpose or special-purpose processor. Also, any connection is properly termed a computer-readable medium. For example, if the software is transmitted from a website, server, or other remote source using a coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair, digital subscriber line (DSL) , or wireless technologies such as infrared, radio, and microwave, then the coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair, DSL, or wireless technologies such as infrared, radio, and microwave are included in the definition of computer-readable medium. Disk and disc, as used herein, include CD, laser disc, optical disc, digital versatile disc (DVD) , floppy disk and Blu-ray disc. Disks may reproduce data magnetically, and discs may reproduce data optically using lasers. Combinations of the above are also included within the scope of computer-readable media. Any functions or operations described herein as being capable of being performed by a memory may be performed by multiple memories that, individually or collectively, are capable of performing the described functions or operations.

[0335] As used herein, including in the claims, “or” as used in a list of items (e.g., a list of items prefaced by a phrase such as “at least one of” or “one or more of” ) indicates an inclusive list such that, for example, a list of at least one of A, B, or C means A or B or C or AB or AC or BC or ABC (i.e., A and B and C) . Also, as used herein, the phrase “based on” shall not be construed as a reference to a closed set of conditions. For example, an example step that is described as “based on condition A” may be based on both a condition A and a condition B without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. In other words, as used herein, the phrase “based on” shall be construed in the same manner as the phrase “based at least in part on. ”

[0336] As used herein, including in the claims, the article “a” before a noun is open-ended and understood to refer to “at least one” of those nouns or “one or more” of those nouns. Thus, the terms “a, ” “at least one, ” “one or more, ” “at least one of one or more” may be interchangeable. For example, if a claim recites “a component” that performs one or more functions, each of the individual functions may be performed by a single component or by any combination of multiple components. Thus, the term “acomponent” having characteristics or performing functions may refer to “at least one of one or more components” having a particular characteristic or performing a particular function. Subsequent reference to a component introduced with the article “a” using the terms “the” or “said” may refer to any or all of the one or more components. For example, a component introduced with the article “a” may be understood to mean “one or more components, ” and referring to “the component” subsequently in the claims may be understood to be equivalent to referring to “at least one of the one or more components. ” Similarly, subsequent reference to a component introduced as “one or more components” using the terms “the” or “said” may refer to any or all of the one or more components. For example, referring to “the one or more components” subsequently in the claims may be understood to be equivalent to referring to “at least one of the one or more components. ”

[0337] The term “determine” or “determining” encompasses a variety of actions and, therefore, “determining” can include calculating, computing, processing, deriving, investigating, looking up (such as via looking up in a table, a database or another data structure) , ascertaining and the like. Also, “determining” can include receiving (e.g., receiving information) , accessing (e.g., accessing data stored in memory) and the like. Also, “determining” can include resolving, obtaining, selecting, choosing, establishing, and other such similar actions.

[0338] In the appended figures, similar components or features may have the same reference label. Further, various components of the same type may be distinguished by following the reference label by a dash and a second label that distinguishes among the similar components. If just the first reference label is used in the specification, the description is applicable to any one of the similar components having the same first reference label irrespective of the second reference label, or other subsequent reference label.

[0339] The description set forth herein, in connection with the appended drawings, describes example configurations and does not represent all the examples that may be implemented or that are within the scope of the claims. The term “example” used herein means “serving as an example, instance, or illustration, ” and not “preferred” or “advantageous over other examples. ” The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing an understanding of the described techniques. These techniques, however, may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring the concepts of the described examples.

[0340] The description herein is provided to enable a person having ordinary skill in the art to make or use the disclosure. Various modifications to the disclosure will be apparent to a person having ordinary skill in the art, and the generic principles defined herein may be applied to other variations without departing from the scope of the disclosure. Thus, the disclosure is not limited to the examples and designs described herein but is to be accorded the broadest scope consistent with the principles and novel features disclosed herein.
