Description

[0001] Device for shortening an edge of textiles

[0002] The invention relates to a device for shortening a textile edge by turning a plate around a turning axis perpendicular to the edge, according to the preamble of claim 1.

[0003] A generic device is known from the applicant’s Austrian patent AT 525656 B1. Edges of textiles occur primarily in waistbands and hems of clothing. A hem is the finished edge, for example on sleeves and trousers, and is also referred to as a sleeve hem or trouser hem. A waistband is the hem of trousers, a skirt or a top at the waist, which can be provided with a textile strip or webbing. Edges of this type sometimes have to be shortened to ensure a proper fit in order to adjust the circumference of the hem or waistband of the garment accordingly. One option for this is to use a belt or elastic bands sewn onto the waistband.

[0004] In addition, the edges of textiles are shortened to create design accents through pleating, for example, in skirts, dresses, or even in textiles such as curtains and the like. Shortening of this type is achieved by appropriate sewing or pinning. Particularly in tailoring, edges sometimes need to be shortened temporarily to prepare a garment for a subsequent work step.

[0005] Especially for the applications mentioned, it would be desirable to have a corresponding device that enables the shortening of edge edges quickly and easily.

[0006] In the applicant's patent AT 525656 B1 mentioned at the beginning, a device is proposed for shortening the edge of textiles. In this device the waistband is shortened by turning a plate about a turning axis perpendicular to the edge. A holding clip which can be plugged onto the plate serves to fasten the plate to the edge, with a fixing clamp which can be plugged or pushed over the plate and the holding clip being provided to fix the edge folded over by turning the plate about a turning axis perpendicular to the edge. To shorten the edge of a waistband, for example, the plate is first placed against the waistband and fastened to the waistband using the holding clip by pushing the holding clip perpendicular to the edge onto the waistband and the plate. The waistband and the plate are thus gripped around on the outside by the holding clip and held together. The plate can then be turned 180 degrees around a turning axis perpendicular to the edge, thereby folding over the edge and thus shortening it. To secure the shortened edge, a clamp is provided, which is placed over the plate and the folded edge.

[0007] The shortening can be reversed by removing the fixing clamp and turning the plate in the opposite direction. This process can be repeated as often as required without damaging the fabric, as would be the case with pins or safety pins. The procedure is quick and easy to carry out, so that the device can also be used as a belt replacement in everyday life, for example. Unlike a belt, however, the device can also be used largely inconspicuously. Furthermore, it is not necessary to have belt loops to use the device.

[0008] A disadvantage of known devices is that they consist of several parts, which not only increases the manufacturing costs but also affects usability because three components, namely the plate, the retaining clip and the fixing clamp, have to be used.

[0009] The aim of the invention is therefore to provide a more cost-effective device which enables the edges of textiles to be shortened even more easily, quickly and without causing damage.

[0010] This aim is achieved by a device according to claim 1. Claim 1 relates to a device for shortening a marginal edge of textiles by turning a plate about a turning axis perpendicular to the marginal edge. It is proposed according to the invention that the plate is formed from a web and a group of prongs projecting from the web, with at least one middle prong and two outer prongs being provided, and the length of the two outer prongs being shorter than the length of the at least one middle prong, and a cover clamp is provided which is formed from a cover plate with a hook-shaped end section, with the cover clamp being able to be plugged onto the plate with its hook-shaped end section. In contrast to known embodiments, no retaining clip is required here.To shorten the edge of a bundle, for example, the plate is first attached to the bundle using the prongs by threading the edge between two adjacent prongs of the plate and then placing the plate on the bundle in a direction perpendicular to the edge. The plate can then be turned 180° around a turning axis perpendicular to the edge. The edge is folded over and shortened in this way. To fix the shortened edge in place, the folded over outer prong is then placed on the edge.

[0011] The shortening can be reversed by unthreading an outer prong and turning the plate in the opposite direction. This process can be repeated as often as desired.

[0012] The different lengths of the prongs are essential for rapid threading and unthreading of the device. When shortening an edge, the outermost prong is placed on the fabric as the last step, and when unthreading, the outermost prong is removed from the fabric as the first step. Both processes are facilitated by shortening the outermost prongs. The prongs lie in the same plane, so the device is still referred to as a single plate.

[0013] The cover clamp provided according to the invention is formed from a cover plate with a hook-shaped end section, with which the cover clamp can be plugged onto the plate. For this purpose, the web can be designed, for example, in the shape of a bead, so that the hook-shaped end section of the cover clamp can be easily plugged onto the bead-shaped web. By designing the cover clamp as a cover plate with a hook-shaped end section, a pivoting version is also possible, in which the cover plate can be pivoted about the longitudinal axis of the web. The cover plate can thus be adapted to different textile thicknesses by bringing the cover plate into different angles of attack to the plane defined by the prongs. The inventive design of the cover clamp as a cover plate with a hook-shaped end section also avoids a pressure surface resting on the body of the wearer, as is the case, for example, with a fastening clamp designed as a cap of the aforementioned prior art. The cover plate of the cover clamp according to the invention, which rests on the outside of the textile, is not noticeable to the wearer and is therefore comfortable to wear.

[0014] The number of tines and the length of the bar determine the extent of the shortening. The attachable cover cap proves important for maintaining the breaking strength of the device, because with a set of at least three or more tines, the bar must be made correspondingly long and is therefore prone to breakage. The attachable cover clamp strengthens the bar and secures it against breakage.

[0015] As already mentioned, the number of prongs and the length of the web determine the extent of the shortening. It is therefore also proposed that at least three middle prongs and two outer prongs are provided, and that the length of the two outer prongs is shorter than the length of the middle prongs. To shorten the edge of a bundle, the edge is threaded between two middle prongs and one of the outer prongs of the plate and the plate is placed on the bundle in a direction perpendicular to the edge. The plate can then be turned 180° about a turning axis perpendicular to the edge. The edge is folded over and shortened in this way. To fix the shortened edge in place, the remaining outer prong is then placed on the edge.If only one middle prong is available, it may be advantageous to increase the distance between the middle prong and the outer prongs accordingly, as the threaded waistband must fit through this recess twice. However, for particularly thin fabrics, it may also be advantageous to deliberately choose narrower spacing between the prongs to achieve better adhesion of the device to the edge.

[0016] In particular, it is proposed that four central prongs and two outer prongs be provided. Alternatively, five central prongs and two outer prongs may be provided.

[0017] The applicants' practical experience shows that up to six or eight central prongs are practical, although more than eight central prongs are also conceivable. The plate itself can be made of a metallic material, a suitably rigid plastic, or even wood. The use of fiber-reinforced plastic for the web and prongs of the plate has proven particularly advantageous.

[0018] To facilitate threading the outer prongs, we recommend that the length of the two outer prongs be no more than 75% of the length of the longest middle prong. Preferably, the length of the two outer prongs should be no more than 50% of the length of the longest middle prong. Generally, the length of the prongs is adjusted to the hem or waistband to be turned over and is typically 1-5 cm.

[0019] To improve grip on the collar, it is also suggested that the prongs be at least partially provided with an anti-slip surface. This anti-slip surface can be achieved, for example, with a silicone coating or a silicone sleeve.

[0020] A further possible design of the plate is that the prongs are arranged parallel to one another and projecting perpendicularly from the web. Alternatively, however, it can also be provided that at least two prongs are arranged parallel to one another and projecting diagonally from the web, and at least one of the two outer prongs is arranged projecting perpendicularly from the web. This design improves the hold of the plate in a direction perpendicular to the edge.

[0021] The cover clamp can also be made of a metallic material, a suitably rigid plastic, or even wood. Fiber-reinforced plastic is preferred for the cover clamp.

[0022] The invention will be explained in more detail below using exemplary embodiments with the aid of the accompanying drawings.

[0031] Fig. 9 shows an alternative embodiment of the plate. Reference is first made to Figs. 1-3, which show individual parts of the device according to the invention and their assembly. Fig. 1 first shows an embodiment of the plate 1, which is formed from a web 2 and a set of tines 3 projecting from the web, wherein in the embodiment shown four middle tines 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 and two outer tines 3.1, 3.6 are provided. The middle tines 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 are each the same length, and the length of the two outer tines 3.1, 3.6 in the embodiment shown is only a maximum of 50% of the length of the middle tines 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5. The tines 3 are arranged parallel to one another and projecting perpendicularly from the web 2. The plate 1 can be made of a metallic material, a suitably rigid plastic, for example, a fiber-reinforced plastic, or even wood. Fig.In comparison, Figure 9 shows an alternative embodiment of the plate, in which the middle prongs 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 and an outer prong 3.1 are arranged parallel to each other and projecting obliquely from the web 2, and the second outer prong 3.6 is arranged perpendicularly from the web 2. This embodiment improves the hold of the plate 1 in a direction perpendicular to the edge 10.

[0032] To improve grip on the collar 9, the prongs 3 can be fully or partially covered with an anti-slip surface. For example, the two outer prongs 3.1, 3.6 could be coated with silicone.

[0033] Fig. 2 shows an embodiment of the cover clamp 4, which is formed from a cover plate 5 with a hook-shaped end section 6. Holding magnets 7 can be provided on the end section 6, which interact with corresponding magnets 8 of the plate 1 and ensure a better hold. The cover clamp 4 can be plugged onto the collar 9 and the plate 1 with its hook-shaped end section 6, whereby the cover plate 5 remains visible. The web 2 can also be designed in a bead-shaped manner for this purpose, so that the hook-shaped end section 6 of the cover clamp 4 can be easily plugged onto the bead-shaped web 2. The cover plate 5 also serves as a design element. Fig. 3 shows the cover clamp 4 plugged onto the plate 1 in a perspective view without the collar 9.

[0034] The application of the device according to the invention is explained below with reference to Figs. 4-8. Fig. 4 shows a first step of the application, in which a peripheral edge 10 of the collar 9 is threaded between two central prongs 3, in the illustrated embodiment approximately between the two prongs 3.3 and 3.4, and the plate 1 is placed onto the collar 9 in a direction perpendicular to the peripheral edge 10.

[0035] In a second step of the application according to Fig. 5, the marginal edge 10 of the collar 9 can also be threaded between one of the outer prongs 3 and its nearest middle prong 3, in the embodiment shown approximately between the outer prong 3.1 and the middle prong 3.2.

[0036] Figure 6 shows a third application step, in which the plate 1 is rotated 180° around a turning axis perpendicular to the edge, whereby the opposite outer prong 3.6 is rotated around the threaded outer prong 3.1, thus folding over and shortening the edge 10. It is immediately apparent that the plurality of middle prongs 3 provides adjustment options for different shortening dimensions.

[0037] In a fourth step of the application according to Fig. 7, the edge 10 can now be threaded between the outer prong 3.6 and the nearest central prong 3.5. The device according to the invention is now securely attached to the collar 9 and thus ensures its shortening.

[0038] Fig. 8 shows a fifth step of the application, in which the cover clamp 4 is placed over the thus shortened edge 10 onto the plate 1. By removing the cover clamp 4 and removing the plate 1, the shortening of the edge 7 can be reversed.

[0039] The device according to the invention enables an even simpler and faster shortening of edge edges 10 and can be used, for example, to adjust the circumference of the hem or waistband 9 of a garment accordingly. In this way, the device can be used, for example, as a belt replacement. A further possible application is to set design accents by means of the wrinkling of the textile caused by shortening, for example in skirts, dresses or also in textiles such as curtains and the like. The device according to the invention can, however, also be used for the temporary shortening of edge edges 10, for example in the course of tailoring and the like.
