Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to discovery of devices. In one aspect, a first device receives a first message from a second device, and the first message requests the first device to discover at least one third device. The first device then transmits a second message in response to the first message to the second device. In this way, the first device may assist the second device in discovering the at least one third device. Therefore, interference and collision issues can be mitigated, and positioning overhead and power consumption may be reduced.

[0038] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0039] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols,  including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the future fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0040] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a new radio (NR) NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology.

[0041] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an internet of things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” ,  “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0042] The term “A-IoT device” refers to a device without batteries or with limited energy storage capabilities. For A-IoT device, energy is provided by harvesting radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other suitable source. A-IoT device can also be called zero-power terminals, near-zero power terminals, passive IoT device, ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) device, tag, etc. Compared with low-power and wide-coverage services, such as narrow band (NB) IoT, enhance machine type communication (eMTC) , A-IoT has lower complexity and lower power consumption, and is suitable for more application scenarios.

[0043] A-IoT in 3GPP may enable ultra-low cost and ultra-low power A-IoT devices. The density of the A-IoT device deployment can be expected to be many orders of magnitudes higher compared to any known 3GPP deployment. Thus, a key element for such deployment is the localization of A-IoT devices. It is not only required to know the identity of the A-IoT device and to communicate with the device, but equally important is knowledge of the position of the A-IoT device.

[0044] In NR / LTE positioning, when setting up the positioning session, the network knows rough location information of a target UE, e.g., in which tracking area and / or in which cell’s coverage. Such information can help a location management function (LMF) to determine which nodes (e.g., gNBs / TRPs) to join a positioning session. However, the network may not know such information for A-IoT devices (e.g., tags) , as traditional radio resource management (RRM) or mobility procedure may not be performed by the A-IoT devices. Due to unknown location of A-IoT devices, it is hard for the LMF to make right decision on which anchors to perform positioning measurement and conduct corresponding reports. Hence, an LMF triggered A-IoT discovery procedure is desired. In addition to anchor nodes selection, the positioning illuminator (i.e. which device transmits PRS) selection could also be a problem for LMF. If multiple illuminators transmit PRS simultaneously, it may create a lot of interference.

[0045] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution is provided for discovery of devices, especially for discovering A-IoT devices. In one aspect of this solution, a first device receives a first message from a second device, and the first message requests the first device to discover at least one third device. The first device then transmits a second message in response to the first message to the second device. In this way, the first  device may assist the second device in discovering the at least one third device. Therefore, interference and collision issues can be mitigated, and positioning overhead and power consumption can also be reduced. Principles and implementations of embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to Figs. 1A-7.

[0046] Fig. 1A illustrates an example network environment 100A in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The environment 100A, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises terminal devices, network devices. As illustrated in Fig. 1A, the network environment 100A may comprise a first device 110, a second device 120, and a third device 130. The first device 110 may be a network node or a terminal device. The second device 120 may be a network function or a location server, such as location management function (LMF) . The third device 130 may be an A-IoT device.

[0047] It is to be understood that the number of devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The system 100A may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more terminal devices or second network devices may be located in the environment 100A.

[0048] Communications in the communication system 100A may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) and the fifth generation (5G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: code division multiple access (CDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division duplex (FDD) , time division duplex (TDD) , multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) , discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0049] 3GPP Technical Specification Group (TSG) Service and System Aspects (SA) Working Group 1 (WG1) (SA1) completed a study item on ambient power enabled IoT,  which focuses on use cases and service requirements, and it includes the objective of defining performance requirements and key performance indicators (KPIs) as well. Among the study, it is assumed that several deployment scenarios are possible. Take the multi-static deployment scenario as an example, the activator and the reader are in different physical entities, and more than one readers may pick up the A-IoT device response, as shown in Fig. 1B.

[0050] Fig. 1B illustrates an example of an ambient IoT deployment based on multi-static backscattering with positioning capabilities. In the deployment scenario 100B, the ambient IoT device 170 can be a passive IoT device without energy storage capability or a semi-passive IoT device with limited energy storage capability. The positioning of ambient IoT devices can be based on the 3GPP positioning architecture where a network node (e.g., gNB) or a terminal device (UE) may be used as an activator (e.g., activator 160) to trigger the positioning event by sending positioning reference signal (PRS) to the ambient IoT device, and one or more network nodes or / and terminal devices (e.g., anchor1 150-1, anchor3 150-2, anchor3 150-3) with known locations, which is configured to listen to the backscattered PRS from the ambient IoT device, can be used as anchors for ambient IoT positioning. The positioning session can be controlled and monitored by the LMF 140. In this example, the anchors may report the positioning measurements, such as time of arrival (TOA) , time difference of arrival (TDOA) , angle of arrival (AOA) , angle of departure (AoD) or / and reference signal received power (RSRP) , which is measured based on the backscattered PRS from the A-IoT device, to the LMF and then use NR-based positioning techniques to determine the location of ambient IoT device.

[0051] Fig. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 200 may involve the first device 110 and the first network device 120. It would be appreciated that although the process 200 has been described in the communication environment 100A of Fig. 1, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios with similar issues.

[0052] In the process 200, the first device 110 receives 205 a first message 210 from the second device 120. The first message 210 requests the first device 110 to discover at least one third device. On the other side of the communication, the second device 120 transmits 215 the first message 210 to the first device 110.

[0053] The first device 110 may be a device that assists positioning for at least one third device. For example, the first device 110 may be a terminal device, a base station, or a TRP. For instance, the second device 120 may be configured to perform at least part of functionalities of an LMF. More particularly, the second device 120 can be an LMF. In some embodiments, the at least one third device may be at least one A-IoT device. In some embodiments, the at least one third device may act as at least one anchor for positioning another third device. For example, the LMF may request a tag finder (i.e., the first device 110) to discover one or more tags for positioning where the tag can be the positioning target device or be used for positioning as positioning reference devices. In another words, the tag be acted as an anchor. The tag finder refers to a device that are capable and willing to assist in discovering one or more tags.

[0054] In some embodiments, the first message may comprise at least one ID of the at least one third device, at least one working frequency band of the at least one third device, at least one working mode of the at least one third device, at least one capability of the at least one third device, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items. In another words, the first device 110 may indicate which tag (s) is / are expected, e.g., a tag ID or a list of tag IDs. The first device 110 may indicate other information required for tag discovery, e.g., a working frequency band of a tag, a working mode of a tag and capability of a tag, etc. The working mode may comprise a back scattering mode, an active mode, a frequency shift mode, an on-off keying (OOK) modulation mode, etc.

[0055] Additionally or alternatively, the first device 110 may further transmit capability information to the second device 120. The capability information indicates that the first device 110 has capability to discover the at least one third device. The first device 110 then may receive a response message for the capability information from the second device 120.

[0056] On the other side of the communication, the second device 120 may further receive the capability information from the first device 110. The second device 120 may then transmit a response message for the capability information to the first device 110. For example, prior to receiving the first message 210, the first device 110 may indicate a capability of whether the first device 110 can and want to be a device that assists in positioning, e.g., a tag finder.

[0057] Additionally or alternatively, the first device 110 may transmit one or more identities (IDs) of one or more third devices associated with the first device 110 to the  second device 120. Correspondingly, the second device 120 may receive the one or more IDs from the first device 110. For example, if the tag finder has maintained some attached tags, e.g., tags discovered by the first device 110, the tag finder may report those tag ID or a list of tag IDs to the second device 120 prior to receiving the first message 210.

[0058] In an example, the first device 110 may register at the second device 120 by performing a registration procedure. The registration procedure may include both request and response messages. After a registration of the first device 110 at the second device 120, the second device 120 may send the first message to the first device 110. During the registration procedure, the first device 110 may transmit at least one of the capability information or one or more IDs of one or more third devices.

[0059] In some embodiments, if the first device 110 is a base station or a TRP, the capability information may be carried by a message of a positioning protocol between a location server and a base station, e.g., a new radio (NR) positioning protocol A (NRPPa) message. In some embodiments, if the first device 110 is a terminal device, the capability information may be carried by a message of a positioning protocol between a location server and a UE, e.g., a long term evolution (LTE) positioning protocol (LPP) message.

[0060] In an example, if the tag finder is a gNB or a TRP, NRPPa TRP information exchange procedure can be reused by adding new information element (IE) of “tag finder capability” . In another example, if the tag finder is a UE, LPP procedures related to capability transfer can be reused by adding a new capability of “tag finder” . In yet another example, tag discovery information exchange may also reuse a LPP protocol or a NRPPa protocol by adding new messages or IEs in legacy messages.

[0061] Continuing with reference to Fig. 2, the first device 110 transmits 220 a second message 225 in response to the first message to the second device 120. Correspondingly, the second device 120 receives 230 second message 225 in response to the first message from the first device 110.

[0062] In some embodiments, the second message 225 may comprise an indication of whether the at least one third device is found, at least one estimated location of the at least one third device, at least one distance between the at least one third device and the first device 110, at least one measurement obtained based on at least one reference signal communicated between the at least one third device and the first device 110, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items. A third device is found may  comprise multiple situations. In an example, a third device is within a service coverage of the first device 110. In another example, a location of a third device is close to the first device 110, e.g., the third device is 20 meters away from the first device 110. In yet another example, a third device establishes a communication link with the first device 110. In a further example, the outcome of a discovery procedure is positive, e.g., the discovery procedure ends and a third device is discovered.

[0063] For example, the second message 225 may contain the following information: whether the tag is found, an estimated coarse location of a tag, how close the tag finder and tag, or related measurements in other form, e.g., RSRP based on a reference signal exchanged between tag finder and tag. The estimated location or the estimated coarse location is not a precise positioning information. The estimated location or the estimated coarse location may be a coarser position relative to the precise positioning information, such as a geographic range.

[0064] Additionally or alternatively, based on the second message, the second device 120 may determine at least one activator for transmitting at least one positioning reference signal to the at least one third device. For example, the LMF determines a PRS illuminator or activator or transmitter for the tag based on a tag finders’ response.

[0065] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may select the first device 110 as an activator. For example, the LMF selects the tag finder as the illuminator / activator. In some embodiments, the second device 120 may select an activator which has a distance to the first device 110 less than a first threshold. For example, the LMF selects an illuminator / activator, which is close to the tag finder, to transmit positioning reference signal. In some embodiments, the second device 120 may select an activator which has at least one distance to the at least one third device less than a second threshold. For example, the LMF selects an illuminator / activator, which is close to the tag based on the reported coarse location of tag, to transmit the positioning reference signal. Additionally, the activator may comprise a terminal device, a base station, a TRP, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items. The first and / or the second threshold may be predetermined or preconfigured.

[0066] Additionally or alternatively, based on the second message, the second device 120 may determine at least one anchor for providing at least one positioning measurement for the at least one third device. For example, the LMF determines which anchors (e.g.,  gNB / TRPs / UEs) to provide positioning measurements based on the tag discovery response.

[0067] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may select at least one of a terminal device, a base station, or a TRP which has a distance to the first device 110 less than a third threshold as the at least one anchor. The third threshold may be predetermined or preconfigured. In some embodiments, based on at least one estimated location of the at least one third device indicated in the second message, the second device 120 may select at least one of a terminal device, a base station, or a TRP as the at least one anchor.

[0068] In general, the first device 110 assists the second device 120 (e.g., a location server) to identify appropriate illuminators or activators, thereby interference and collision issues are reduced. The first device 110 further assists the second device 120 to select suitable TRPs or anchors to join positioning session, thereby positioning overhead and power consumption are reduced.

[0069] Fig. 3 illustrates an example procedure of proposed solution according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The procedure 300 may involve a tag 301, a tag finder 302, a PRS illuminator 303, anchors 304 and an LMF 305. It is understood that the process 300 can be considered as a more specific example of the process 200 in Fig. 2. Thus, the tag finder 302 in Fig. 3 may be an example of the first device 110 in Fig. 2, and the LMF 305 in Fig. 3 may be an example of the second device 120 in Fig. 1A or Fig. 2.

[0070] As shown in Fig. 3, at 306, the tag finder 302 performs a tag finder registration procedure at LMF 305. The tag finder 302 may be a UE or a gNB / TRP. The tag finder registration procedure may include both request and response messages.

[0071] At 310, the LMF 304 sends a tag discovery request to one or multiple tag finders comprising the tag finder 302. At 315, the tag finder 302 performs tag discovery and association procedure to look for requested tag. At 320, the tag finder 302 sends a tag discovery response to the LMF 304.

[0072] At 325, the LMF 304 performs a determination on which device is the PRS illuminator for the tag based on the tag discovery response. At 330, the LMF 304 transmits a positioning configuration request to the PRS illuminator 303. At 335, the PRS illuminator 303 performs a positioning configuration determination. At 340, the PRS illuminator 303 transmits a positioning configuration response to the LMF 304.

[0073] At 345, the LMF 304 determines which anchors (e.g., gNB / TRPs / UEs) to provide positioning measurements based on the tag discovery response. In an embodiment, LMF  selects gNB / TRPs / UEs to provide positioning measurements close to the tag finder. In another embodiment, LMF selects gNB / TRPs / UEs to provide positioning measurements based on the reported coarse location of tag.

[0074] At 355, the LMF 304 transmits a positioning measurement request to anchors 304. At 360, anchors 304 transmits a positioning measurement response to the LMF 304.

[0075] Fig. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first device 110 with reference to Fig. 1A.

[0076] At block 410, the first device receives, from a second device, a first message for requesting the first device to discover at least one third device. At block 420, the first device 110 transmits, to the second device, a second message in response to the first message.

[0077] In some embodiments, the first device may transmit, to the second device, capability information indicating that the first device has capability to discover the at least one third device; and receive, from the second device, a response message for the capability information.

[0078] In some embodiments, the capability information may be carried by a new radio (NR) positioning protocol A (NRPPa) message in the case that the first device is a base station or a TRP. In some embodiments, the capability information may be carried by a long term evolution (LTE) positioning protocol (LPP) message in the case that the first device is a terminal device.

[0079] In some embodiments, the first device may transmit, to the second device, one or more identities (IDs) of one or more third devices associated with the first device. In some embodiments, the first message may comprise at least one of the following: at least one ID of the at least one third device; at least one working frequency band of the at least one third device; at least one working mode of the at least one third device; or at least one capability of the at least one third device.

[0080] In some embodiments, the second message may comprise at least one of the following: an indication of whether the at least one third device is found; at least one estimated location of the at least one third device; at least one distance between the at least one third device and the first device; or at least one measurement obtained based on at least  one reference signal communicated between the at least one third device and the first device.

[0081] In some embodiments, the first device may be one of the following: a terminal device; a base station; or a transmission and reception point (TRP) . In some embodiments, the at least one third device may be at least one ambient Internet of thing (A-IoT) device. In some embodiments, the at least one third device may act as at least one anchor for positioning another third device. In some embodiments, the second device may be configured to perform at least part of functionalities of a location management function (LMF) .

[0082] Fig. 5 shows a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at a second device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the second device 120 with reference to Fig. 1A.

[0083] At block 510, the second device transmits, to a first device, a first message for requesting the first device to discover at least one third device. At block 520, the second device receives, from the first device, a second message in response to the first message.

[0084] In some embodiments, the second device may further receive, from the first device, capability information indicating that the first device has capability to discover at least one third device; and transmit, to the first device, a response message for the capability information.
