AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In non-terrestrial networks (NTN), the mobility of radio access network (RAN) devices due to satellite movement leads to unstable inter-satellite links (ISL) and feeder link switches, causing disruptions in Xn and NG interfaces, resulting in signaling and data transmission failures.

Method used

Enhancements to the Xn and NG interfaces in NTN by determining and transmitting specific signaling information through core network devices, utilizing assistance information to route signals effectively even in the absence of direct links, ensuring seamless communication between RAN devices.

Benefits of technology

Facilitates stable and uninterrupted communication in NTN environments by enabling successful transmission of Xn and NG signaling without relying on established inter-satellite links, thus reducing signaling and data transmission failures.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for Xn and NG interface enhancements in a non-terrestrial network (NTN). In a solution, a first radio access network (RAN) device determines first NG signaling, the first NG signaling comprising Xn signaling to be transmitted to a second RAN device in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) and first assistance information, the first assistance information at least indicating a second identity of the second RAN device; and transmits the first NG signaling to a core network (CN) device over a first NG interface between the first RAN device and the CN device, to cause the CN device to forward the Xn signaling to the second RAN device.

[0046] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such  as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0047] The communications in the communication environment may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0048] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0049] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The environment 100 involves one or more radio access network (RAN) devices 130-1, 130-2 on the corresponding satellites or UAS platforms, an NTN gateway 140, a CN 150, a CN device 155, one or more terminal devices 110, and one or more network devices 120.

[0050] The NTN gateway 140 is an earth station or gateway that is located at the surface of Earth, and provides sufficient radio frequency (RF) power and RF sensitivity for accessing to the satellites (high altitude platform stations, HAPS) . The NTN Gateway 140 may be considered as a transport network layer (TNL) node. A feeder link or radio link is a wireless link between an NTN gateway and a satellite (or UAS platform) . The RAN devices 130-1, 130-2 (collectively or individually referred to as RAN devices 130) may have feeder links with the NTN gateway 140, and such links are mandatory if there is no  Inter-Satellite Link (ISL) between different RAN devices 130.

[0051] A service link or radio link is a wireless link between a terminal device 110 and a RAN device 130. A beam footprint 112 is the area of the Earth visible to satellites. From the field of view of the satellite (or UAS platform) for the RAN devices 130, more than one footprint 112 may be covered. Generally, to determine whether a terminal device can communicate with a satellite, it depends on whether the signal coverage area of the satellite will cover the terminal device and at what time.

[0052] In the NTN, a network device (e.g., gNB) may be subdivided into non-NTN infrastructure gNB functions and the NTN service link provisioning system. The NTN infrastructure may be considered as being subdivided into the NTN service link provisioning system and the NTN control device. The NTN service link provisioning system may consist of one or more NTN payloads and NTN Gateways. The NTN payload is embarked on a spaceborne (or airborne) vehicle, providing a structure, power, commanding, telemetry, attitude control for the satellite (respect to HAPS) and possibly an appropriate thermal environment, radiation shielding. The NTN service link provisioning system maps the NR-Uu radio protocol over radio resources of the NTN infrastructure (e.g. beams, channels, transmit power) .

[0053] The following connectivity is supported by the NTN payload. In an example, an NTN gateway may serve multiple NTN payloads. In a further example, an NTN payload may be served by multiple NTN gateways.

[0054] Three types of service links are supported in the NTN. In an earth-fixed type, a service link is provisioned by beam (s) continuously covering the same geographical areas all the time (e.g., the case of GSO satellites) . In a quasi-earth-fixed type, a service link is provisioned by beam (s) covering one geographic area for a limited period and a different geographic area during another period (e.g., the case of non-GSO (NGSO) satellites generating steerable beams) . In an earth-moving type, a service link is provisioned by beam (s) whose coverage area slides over the Earth surface (e.g., the case of NGSO satellites generating fixed or non-steerable beams) .

[0055] FIGS. 2A-2D illustrate possible implementations 200, 201, 202, and 203 of a radio access network (RAN) that may be used in an NTN environment. As seen in FIGS. 2A-2D, new radio (NR) -RAN may be implemented in a number of different ways in an NTN environment, and thus the interfaces between different entities may vary in different  implementations. The implementation 200 in FIG. 2A shows a networking-RAN architecture with a transparent satellite, where the satellite and an NTN gateway is considered as a remote radio unit. The implementation 201 in FIG. 2B shows a regenerative satellite with ISL, network device (e.g., gNB) processed payload. The implementation 202 in FIG. 2C shows a regenerative satellite without ISL, (e.g., gNB) processed payload. The implementation 203 in FIG. 2D shows a NG-RAN with a regenerative satellite based on a distributed unit (DU) of a network device which connects to a central unit (CU) of the network device in the NG-RAN. The regenerative payload is payload that transforms and amplifies an uplink RF signal before transmitting it on the downlink. The transformation of the signal refers to digital processing that may include demodulation, decoding, re-encoding, re-modulation and / or filtering. The transparent payload is payload that changes the frequency carrier of the uplink RF signal, filters and amplifies it before transmitting it on the downlink.

[0056] The NTN control device is shown in FIGS. 2A-2D. The NTN control device (also referred to as an NTN control function) may be a part of the NTN infrastructure. The NTN control device is used to control the spaceborne (or airborne) vehicle as well as radio resources of the NTN infrastructure. It provides control data, e.g. Ephemeris, to non-NTN infrastructure RAN functions of the NR-RAN. It should be noted that some NTN related parameters are expected to be provided by O&M to the RAN device for its operation. In a context of earth-fixed beams, for each beam provided by a given NTN payload, the NTN related parameters comprise at least a cell identifier (NG and Uu) mapped to that beam and a cell reference location (e.g. cell center and range) . In a context of quasi-earth-fixed beams, for each beam provided by a given NTN payload, the NTN related parameters comprise at least a cell identifier (NG and Uu) and a time window mapped to that beam; a cell / beam reference location (e.g. cell center and range) ; a time window of a successive switch over (feeder link, service link) ; and identifiers and time windows of all serving satellites (respect to HAPS) and NTN Gateways. In addition, in a context of earth moving beams, for each beam provided by a given NTN payload, the NTN related parameters comprise at least a Uu cell identifier mapped to that beam and mapping information to fixed geographical areas reported on NG, including information about a beam direction and motion of that beam footprint on Earth; elevation with respect to a NTN payload of that beam; a schedule of a successive serving NTN gateway or RAN device; and a schedule of successive switch over the feeder link or service link.

[0057] FIG. 3 illustrates a possible implementation 300 of Xn interfaces and NG interfaces in an NTN environment. A RAN device is a network device (e.g., gNB) that provides NR user plane and control plane protocol terminations towards the terminal device (e.g., UE) or a network device (e.g., ng-eNB) that provides E-UTRA user plane and control plane protocol terminations towards the UE. As shown, RAN devices 310-1 to 310-4 are interconnected with each other by means of the Xn interface. The RAN devices 310-1 to 310-4 are also connected by means of the NG interfaces to CN devices 320-1 to 320-2, more specifically to the AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function) by means of the NG-C interface and to the UPF (User Plane Function) by means of the NG-U interface. The NG interface supports the exchange of signaling information between the RAN and CN. From a logical standpoint, the NG interface is a point-to-point interface between one of RAN devices 310-1 to 310-4 and one of CN devices 320-1 to 320-2. A point-to-point logical interface is feasible even in the absence of a physical direct connection between the RAN device and the CN device. The NG interface supports control plane and user plane separation. Additionally, the Xn interface is open. The Xn interface supports the exchange of signaling information between two RAN devices of the RAN devices 310-1 to 310-4 and the forwarding of PDU (Protocol Data Unit) to respective tunnel endpoints. From a logical standpoint, the Xn interface is a point-to-point interface between two RAN devices of the RAN devices 310-1 to 310-4. A point-to-point logical interface should be feasible even in the absence of a physical direct connection between the two RAN devices.

[0058] FIGS. 4A-4B illustrate possible implementation 400 and implementation 401 of an NG interface related hard feeder link switch that may be used in an NTN environment. As shown in FIG. 4A, at a time T1, a RAN device 130 has not arrived at a transition threshold and the RAN device 130 is maintaining a feeder link to an NTN gateway 140-1. As shown in FIG. 4B, at a time T2, the RAN device 130 has passed the transition threshold and the RAN device 130 is maintaining a further feeder link to an NTN gateway 140-2 now. It would be appreciated that the RAN device 130 maintains only one feeder link to an NTN gateway at a time with an NG interface related hard feeder link switch, that is, before establishing a connection to a new gateway, the satellite must first sever the connection with the former NTN gateway.

[0059] FIGS. 5A-5C illustrate possible implementation 500, implementation 501 and implementation 502 of an NG interface related soft feeder link switch that may be used in  an NTN environment. As shown in FIG. 5A, at a time T1, a RAN device 130 has not arrived at a transition threshold and the RAN device 130 is maintaining a feeder link to an NTN gateway 140-1. As shown in FIG. 5B, at a time T1.5, the RAN device 130 is near the transition threshold and the RAN device 130 is maintaining feeder links to the NTN gateway 140-1 and another NTN gateway 140-2 simultaneously. As shown in FIG. 5C, at a time T2, the RAN device 130 has passed the transition threshold and the RAN device 130 is maintaining the feeder link to the other NTN gateway 140-2 now. It would be appreciated that a soft feeder link switch allows the RAN device 130 to maintain a plurality of feeder links for a period prior to severing the connection with the former NTN gateway.

[0060] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections in FIGS. 1-5C are given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The environments may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementations of the present disclosure.

[0061] In a legacy NTN, for a full RAN device on board (i.e., regenerative architecture) , the Xn interface between two RAN devices is established by an inter-satellite link, and the NG interface between a RAN device and a CN device is connected by a feeder link, which is wireless. When RAN devices are moving, an ISL can only sometimes be maintained. Therefore, a stable ISL and Xn interface cannot be guaranteed. With the mobility of the RAN device on satellite, an ISL connection and disconnection and a feeder link switch will happen. It will cause Xn interface disconnection and NG interface interruption. Then, it may cause many singling and data transmission failures during the disconnection and interruption time.

[0062] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, Xn interface enhancement is proposed in an NTN. A first RAN device determines and transmits first NG signaling to a CN device over a first NG interface, wherein the first NG signaling comprises Xn signaling to be transmitted to a second RAN device in an NTN and first assistance information. After receiving the first NG signaling from the first RAN device, the CN device transmits, based on the first assistance information, second NG signaling to a second RAN device over a second NG interface. The second RAN device then extract the Xn signaling from the second NG signaling. In this way, the Xn signaling can be successfully transmitted from the first RAN device to the second RAN device, without worrying about whether an ISL is established between the first RAN device and the second  RAN device.

[0063] In addition, according to some further example embodiments of the present disclosure, in accordance with a determination of absence of a feeder link between a first RAN device and a gateway in an NTN, the first RAN device determines and transmits Xn signaling to a second RAN device over a Xn interface, wherein the Xn signaling comprises first NG signaling to be transmitted to a core network (CN) device and second assistance information. After receiving the Xn signaling from the first RAN device, the second RAN device transmits, based on the second assistance information, second NG signaling to the CN device over a NG interface, and wherein the second NG signaling at least comprises the first NG signaling. The CN device then extract the first NG signaling from the second NG signaling. Therefore, the first NG signaling can be successfully transmitted from the first RAN device to the CN device in absence of the feeder link between the first RAN device and the gateway.

[0064] FIG. 6 illustrates a signaling flow 600 of Xn interface enhancement in an NTN in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 600 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling flow involves a RAN device 130-1, a RAN device 130-2 and a CN device 155. The CN device 155 may be any suitable entities or functions in the CN. In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may be an AMF or other CN function in the CN which has an NG interface with RAN devices.

[0065] In the signaling flow 600, the RAN device 130-1 determines (605) first NG signaling (also known as inter-gNB information transfer) . The first NG signaling comprises Xn signaling (also known as inter-gNB information) to be transmitted to the RAN device 130-2 in an NTN and first assistance information. The first assistance information at least indicates a second identity of the RAN device 130-2 (also referred to as a receiving gNB ID) , which may be, for example, a Global gNB ID, a Global ng-eNB ID or a Global RAN node ID, which includes ng-eNB and other RAN nodes. As the RAN device 130-2 is the destination of the Xn signaling sent by the RAN device 130-1, by indicating the identity of the RAN 130-2 in the assistance information, it allows the CN device 155 to determine which RAN device the Xn signaling can be transmitted.

[0066] The RAN device 130-1 then transmits (610) the first NG signaling to the CN device 155. The first NG signaling is transmitted to the CN device 155 over a first NG  interface between the RAN device 130-1 and the CN device 155, to cause the CN device 155 to forward the Xn signaling to the RAN device 130-2. In such a way, the Xn signaling intended for a RAN device can be forwarded through the NG interface between the CN and the RAN.

[0067] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the Xn signaling is to be transmitted to the RAN device 130-2, the RAN device 130-1 may determine whether an ISL is established between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2. In accordance with a determination of absence of the ISL established between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2, the RAN device 130-1 may further determine the first NG signaling. The Xn signaling may be transmitted by the NG interface, or a logical Xn interface may be established via the first NG interface during inter-satellite interruption.

[0068] In some examples, the Xn signaling may comprise at least one of Xn control signaling or user data and related signaling. The Xn control signaling may comprise but not be limited to: handover request / handover request acknowledgement / handover success / handover cancel / conditional handover cancel / handover report; mobility change request / mobility change acknowledgement; retrieve UE context request / retrieve UE context response / UE context release / Xn-U address indication / retrieve UE context confirm / partial UE context transfer / partial UE context transfer acknowledgement; RAN paging / RAN multicast group paging; Xn setup request / Xn setup request acknowledgement; Xn removal request / Xn removal response; NG-RAN node configuration update / NG-RAN node configuration update acknowledgement; cell activation / cell activation response; or resource status request / resource status response. The user data and related signaling may comprise but not be limited to data transfer during the handover; early data forwarding during conditional handover (CHO) and dual active protocol stack (DAPS) ; data transfer during multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) and new radio dual connectivity (NR-DC) ; path switch request / path switch request acknowledgement; or sequence number (SN) status transfer / early status transfer. It would be appreciated that only some examples of Xn signaling are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0069] In some embodiments, the first assistance information may further indicate a first identity of the RAN device 130-1 (also referred to as a sending gNB ID) which may be, for example Global gNB ID, Global ng-eNB ID or Global RAN node ID, which  includes ng-eNB and other RAN nodes. As the RAN device 130-1 is the source of the Xn signaling to be transmitted to the RAN device 130-2, by indicating the identity of the RAN 130-1 in the assistance information, it allows the CN device 155 and the RAN device 130-2 to determine which RAN device sends the Xn signaling.

[0070] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first assistance information may further indicate a cause value (also referred to as Cause) for the first NG signaling. In the case of being included in the first assistance information, the cause value may indicate ISL interruption. It means that the NG procedure for transferring the first NG signaling is initiated because inter-satellite link interruption happens.

[0071] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first assistance information may further indicate an inter-RAN device interface identity (also referred to as an inter-gNB interface ID) between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2, is to identify the inter-gNB interface in the CN. The inter-RAN device interface identity can be used to indicate the sending and receiving gNB ID as the sending and receiving gNB ID and the inter-gNB interface ID is mapped in CN.

[0072] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first assistance information may further indicate an allowed transmitting time (also referred to as an inter-gNB information transmitting time or timer) for the first NG signaling, based on which a CN device may decide whether to transmit the first NG signaling. Since the signaling forward path from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155 and then to the RAN device 130-2 has long transmitting latency, the CN device 155 may decide whether to transmit the first NG signaling based on the allowed transmitting time or timer.

[0073] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first assistance information may further indicate a data path switch indication indicating a data forwarding change for the Xn signaling. The data path switch indication may indicate the data forwarding from a path of the RAN device 130-1 to the RAN device 130-2 to another path of the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155 and then to the RAN device 130-2.

[0074] In some embodiments, the Xn signaling is comprised in a transparent container (referred to as an inter-gNB information transparent container) in the first NG signaling. As such, the Xn signaling is transparent to the CN device 155 when it receives the first NG signaling. The CN device 155 can read the first assistance information from the first NG signaling, to decide whether and how the transparent container is to be forwarded.

[0075] Table 1 provides example information elements (IEs) for inter-gNB information transfer. It would be appreciated that this is merely for the purpose of illustration, and there may be various other designs for the IEs for the NG signaling used for forwarding Xn signaling as proposed herein.

[0076] Table 1

[0077] Table 2 provides an example of the inter-gNB information transparent container of the NG signaling that contains the Xn signaling.

[0081] Table 4 provides an example of the inter-gNB information transmitting time  included in the first assistance information.

[0082] Table 4

[0083] In some examples, for the Xn control signaling or user data and related signaling, all or part of them may be transmitted by a new NG procedure. In some embodiments, the RAN 130-1 may transmit the first NG signaling to the CN device 155 in a first NG procedure, the first NG procedure being defined for forwarding of Xn signaling over the NG interface.

[0084] In some examples, for the Xn control signaling and user data and related signaling, all or part of them may be transmitted by corresponding NG signaling. In some embodiments, the RAN 130-1 may determine the first NG signaling to be a first predetermined type of NG signaling that is corresponding to a type of the Xn signaling in accordance with a determination of absence of ISL established between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2.

[0085] Table 5 provides the correspondence between some types of Xn signaling and some types of NG signaling and the analysis of whether a particular type of NG signaling is workable. As shown in Table 5, part of the Xn signaling may be transmitted by corresponding NG-related signaling.

[0086] Table 5

[0087] According to Table 5 above, the first predetermined type of NG signaling may comprise handover required signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device 155, the handover required signaling being used to trigger handover request signaling from the CN device 155 to a further RAN device.

[0088] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first predetermined type of NG signaling may further comprise user equipment (UE) context release request signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device 155, the UE context release  request signaling being used to trigger UE context release signaling from the CN device 155 to a further RAN device.

[0089] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the first predetermined type of NG signaling may further comprise uplink RAN early status transfer signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device 155, the uplink RAN early status transfer signaling being used to trigger downlink RAN early status transfer signaling from the CN device 155 to a further RAN device.

[0090] In some embodiments, the Xn signaling can be handover request signaling, and the first NG signaling can be the handover required signaling. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the Xn signaling can be UE context release signaling, and the first NG signaling can be the UE context release request signaling. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the Xn signaling can be early status transfer signaling, and the first NG signaling can be the uplink RAN early status transfer signaling.

[0091] Table 6 provides an example of the Handover Required signaling and the Handover Request signaling.

[0092] Table 6

[0093] The IE description of inter-gNB information transparent container provided in the Table 6 is same as that of Table 2. For other workable signaling (for example, UE Context Release / UE Context Release Request and Uplink RAN Early Status Transfer / Downlink RAN Early Status Transfer) , the TS impact is similar to Table 6.

[0094] In some examples, part of the Xn control plane signaling and user plane data may be transmitted by legacy signaling, such as uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling from a RAN device to a CN device, or downlink RAN configuration transfer signaling or downlink RAN status transfer signaling from a CN device to a RAN device. In some embodiments, the RAN 130-1 may determine the first NG signaling to be uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling.

[0095] Table 7 provides an example of uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling.

[0096] Table 7

[0097] In some examples, the CN device 155 or the NTN control device may send the first pausing indication to the RAN 130-1 when the NG interface or feeder link has heavy signaling burden. Then, the RAN 130-1 stops to transmit the Xn signaling or data. A cause IE may also be included to indicate pausing reasons, such as the NG interface or feeder  link having heavy signaling burden or a feeder link switch over. In some embodiments, the RAN 130-1 may determine whether a first pausing indication for forwarding of Xn signaling over the first NG interface is received from the CN device 155 or an NTN control device; and in accordance with a determination that the first pausing indication is not received from the CN device 155, transmit the first NG signaling to the CN device 155, and wherein the RAN device 130-1 may prevent the first NG signaling from being transmitted to the CN device 155, in accordance with a determination that the first pausing indication is received from the CN device 155.

[0098] In some embodiments, the RAN 130-1 may receive, from the CN device 155 or an NTN control device, configuration information related to the ISL between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2. In some embodiments, the configuration information may indicate an indication of a start time and an end time of interruption of the ISL. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the configuration information may further indicate a second pausing indication indicating a start of the interruption of the ISL. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the configuration information may further indicate a resume indication indicating an end of the interruption of the ISL. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the configuration information may further indicate at least one operation indication of the RAN device 130-1 before, during, and / or after the interruption of the ISL. The ISL available time and / or un-available time may be informed to the RAN 130-1, and the RAN 130-1 may stop or begin to transmit signals over the Xn interface based on the status of the ISL. In some examples, the indication of the start time and end time may be Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) .

[0099] In some examples, at least one operation indication of the RAN device 130-1 may comprise a first operation indication of not trigging a Xn procedure over the ISL before the interruption of the ISL starts. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, at least one operation indication of the RAN device 130-1 may further comprise a second operation indication of pausing at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL starts. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, at least one operation indication of the RAN device 130-1 may further comprise a third operation indication of resuming the at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL ends. In some examples, in response to the second operation indication, the RAN device 130-1 may perform at least one of the following: thinking the ongoing procedures have failed and stopping transferring the data; triggering the cancel and / or removal procedures; or  triggering the handover cancellation or removal procedure for ongoing inter-gNB handover procedures. It would be appreciated that only some examples of the performance of the RAN device 130-1 are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0100] The CN device 155 receives (615) the first NG signaling from the RAN device 130-1 in the NTN over the first NG interface and transmit (620) , based on the first assistance information, second NG signaling to the RAN device 130-2. The second NG signaling is transmitted to the RAN device 130-2 over a second NG interface between the CN device 155 and the RAN device 130-2. The second NG signaling at least comprises the Xn signaling. Then the RAN device 130-2 receives (625) the second NG signaling from the CN device 155 over the second NG interface in the NTN and extracts (630) the Xn signaling from the second NG signaling.

[0101] In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may decide to transfer the inter-gNB information or not based on some assistant information such as latency or NG interface signaling burden. In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may transmit the second NG signaling to the RAN device 130-2 in accordance with a determination that a transmitting time of the first NG signaling is within the allowed transmitting time. In some embodiments, the second NG signaling further comprises the first assistance information.

[0102] In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may receive the first NG signaling from the RAN device 130-1 in the first NG procedure described above; and may transmit the second NG signaling to the RAN device 130-2in the first NG procedure.

[0103] In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may receive the first NG signaling from the RAN device 130-1, the first NG signaling being of the first predetermined type that is corresponding to the type of the Xn signaling described above; and transmit the second NG signaling of the first predetermined type to the RAN device 130-2, wherein the Xn signaling can be handover request signaling, the first NG signaling may comprise handover required signaling transmitted from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155, and the second NG signaling may comprise handover request signaling from the CN device 155 to the RAN device 130-2, wherein the Xn signaling can be UE context release signaling, the first NG signaling may comprise user equipment (UE) context release request signaling transmitted from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155, and the second NG signaling may comprise UE context release signaling from the CN device 155  to the RAN device 130-2, or wherein the Xn signaling can be early status transfer signaling, the first NG signaling may comprise uplink RAN early status transfer signaling transmitted from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155, and the second NG signaling may comprise downlink RAN early status transfer signaling from the CN device 155 to the RAN device 130-2.

[0104] In some examples, part of the Xn control plane signaling and user plane data may be transmitted by legacy signaling, such as uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling from a RAN device to a CN device, or downlink RAN configuration transfer signaling or downlink RAN status transfer signaling from a CN device to a RAN device. In some embodiments, the first NG signaling comprises uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling described above; and the second NG signaling comprises downlink RAN configuration transfer signaling or downlink RAN status transfer signaling. Table 8 provides an example of downlink RAN configuration transfer signaling.

[0105] Table 8

[0106] The IE description of inter-gNB information transparent container provided in the Tables 7-8 is same as that of Table 2. For other workable signaling (such as, uplink RAN status transfer signaling and downlink RAN status transfer signaling) , the TS impact is similar to Tables 7-8.

[0107] In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may transmit the first pausing indication described above to the RAN device 130-1 for forwarding of Xn signaling over the first NG interface.

[0108] In some embodiments, the CN device 155 may transmit, to the RAN device 130-1, the configuration information related to the ISL between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2. The configuration information has been described above, which will not be repeated.

[0109] FIG. 7 illustrates a possible implementation 700 of Xn interface enhancement in an NTN. The implementation 700 in FIG. 7 shows that a Xn interface is established by a route 710 to transmit Xn signaling, without using an ISL between the first RAN device  and the second RAN device. The route 710 is from a first regenerative satellite (the first RAN device) to a second regenerative satellite (the second RAN device) and passes a CN device in the CN. In this way, the Xn signaling can be successfully transmitted from the first RAN device to the second RAN device, without worrying about whether an ISL is established between the first RAN device and the second RAN device. It should be noted that the NTN gateways as show on the route 710 can be different or the same NTN gateway. Although separate CNs are illustrated in FIG. 7, depending on the implementations, there may be one CN and the CN devices on the route 710 can be different or the same CN device in the CN (s) .

[0110] FIG. 8 illustrates a further signaling flow 800 of NG interface enhancement in an NTN in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 600 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling flow involves a RAN device 130-1, a RAN device 130-2 and a CN device 155.

[0111] In the signaling flow 800, a RAN device 130-1 determines (805) Xn signaling (also known as a gNB-AMF signaling transfer) . The Xn signaling is determined in accordance with a determination of absence of a feeder link between the RAN device 130-1 and a gateway in NTN. The gateway is located between the RAN device 130-1 and a CN device 155. The Xn signaling comprises first NG signaling to be transmitted to the CN device 155 and second assistance information. The second assistance information at least indicates a third identity (also known as an AMF ID ) of the CN device 155. As the CN device 155 is the destination of the NG signaling sent by the RAN device 130-1, by indicating the identity of the CN device 155 in the second assistance information, it allows the RAN device 130-2 to determine which CN device the NG signaling can be transmitted to.

[0112] The RAN device 130-1 then transmits (810) the Xn signaling to a RAN device 130-2. The Xn signaling is transmitted to the RAN device 130-2 over a Xn interface between the RAN device 130-1 and the RAN device 130-2, to cause the RAN device 130-2 to forward the first NG signaling to the CN device 155. In such a way, the NG signaling intended for a CN device can be forwarded through the Xn interface between the two RAN devices.

[0113] In some embodiments, the second assistance information may further indicate a first identity (also referred to as a sending gNB ID, which may be, for example, a Global  RAN Node ID) of the RAN device 130-1. As the RAN device 130-1 is the source of the NG signaling to be transmitted to the CN device 155, by indicating the identity of the RAN 130-1 in the second assistance information, it allows the RAN device 130-2 and the CN device 155 to determine which RAN device sends the NG signaling.

[0114] In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the second assistance information may further indicate a second identity (also referred to as a receiving gNB ID, which may be, for example, a Global RAN Node ID) of the RAN device 130-2. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the second assistance information may further indicate a cause value (also referred to as a Cause) for the Xn signaling. In the case of being included in the second assistance information, the cause value may indicate feeder link interruption. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the second assistance information may further indicate a RAN-CN transfer identity (also referred to as a gNB-AMF transfer ID) between the first RAN device and the CN device. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the second assistance information may further indicate an allowed transmitting time (also referred to as an inter-gNB information transmitting time) for the Xn signaling.

[0115] In some embodiments, the first NG signaling may be comprised in a transparent container (also referred to as a gNB-AMF information transparent container) in the Xn signaling. As such, the first NG signaling is transparent to the RAN device 130-2 when it receives the first NG signaling. The CN device 155 can read the second assistance information from the Xn signaling, to decide whether and how the transparent container is to be forwarded. In some examples, the first NG signaling may comprises but not limited to: PDU session management-related signaling; UE context management-related signaling; UE mobility management-related signaling; paging related signaling; NG interface management signaling; or other signaling like warning / positioning / trace / location reporting / UE capability / broadcast / multiple-cast signaling. It would be appreciated that only some examples of the first NG signaling are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0116] Table 9 provides example information elements (IEs) for gNB-AMF signaling transfer. It would be appreciated that this is merely for the purpose of illustration, and there may be various other designs for the IEs for the Xn signaling used for forwarding NG signaling as proposed herein.

[0118] Table 10 provides an example of the gNB-AMF information transparent container of the Xn signaling that contains the NG signaling.

[0120] Table 11 provides an example of the Cause value included in the second assistance information.

[0122] Table 12 provides an example of the inter-gNB information transmitting time included in the second assistance information.

[0123] Table 12

[0124] In some examples, a new procedure may be designed to transfer the first NG signaling. In some embodiments, the RAN device 130-1 may transmit the Xn signaling to the RAN device 130-2 in a Xn procedure, the Xn procedure being defined for forwarding of first NG signaling over the Xn interface.

[0125] The RAN device 130-2 receives (815) the Xn signaling from the RAN device 130-1 over the Xn interface in the NTN. The RAN device 130-2 then transmit (820) , based on the second assistance information, second NG signaling to the CN device 155. The second NG signaling is transmitted over a NG interface between the RAN device 130-2 and the CN device 155. The second NG signaling at least comprises the first NG signaling to be transmitted from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155. The CN device 155 receives (825) the second NG signaling over the NG interface from the RAN device 130-2. The CN device 155 then extracts (830) the first NG signaling from the second NG signaling.

[0126] In some embodiments, the RAN device 130-2 may transmit the second NG signaling to the CN device 155 in accordance with a determination that a transmitting time of the Xn signaling is within the allowed transmitting time described above.

[0127] In some embodiments, the second NG signaling may further comprise third assistance information. In some embodiments, the third assistance information may indicate the second identity of the RAN device 130-2. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the third assistance information may further indicate the third identity of the CN device 155. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the third assistance information may further indicate the cause value for the Xn signaling. In some embodiments, alternatively or in addition, the third assistance information may further indicate the RAN-CN transfer identity between the RAN device 130-1 and the CN device 155. In some embodiments, the first NG signaling can be comprised in a first transparent container in the Xn signaling; and the first NG signaling can be comprised in a second transparent container in the second NG signaling. The specification and the formats of the third assistance information may be the same or similar as the second assistance information, such as the examples shown in the above tables.

[0128] In some examples, a new NG procedure may be designed. In some embodiments, the RAN device 130-2 may transmit the second NG signaling to the CN device 155 in a second NG procedure, the second NG procedure being defined for forwarding of NG signaling of a further RAN device over the NG interface. The TS impact is similar to that described in FIG. 6.

[0129] In some examples, a corresponding NG signaling is used to transfer the to-be-transmitted NG signaling. The to-be-transmitted NG signaling can find a corresponding  NG signaling via another NG interface. For example, a handover request signaling from the RAN device 130-1 to the CN device 155 can be transmitted by a handover request signaling from the RAN device 130-2 to the CN device 155. In some embodiments, the second NG signaling may be of a same type of the first NG signaling.

[0130] In some examples, the uplink RAN configuration / status transfer can be used to transfer signaling in a transparent container from the RAN device 130-2 to a CN device 155. In some embodiments, the second NG signaling may comprise uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling.

[0131] With the movement of satellites, a feeder link may only be maintained sometimes. Therefore, a stable NG interface cannot be guaranteed. In such situation, NG signaling may be transmitted by a Xn interface, or an NG interface is established via the NG interface when the feeder link is interrupted. FIG. 9 illustrates a possible implementation 900 of NG interface enhancement in an NTN. The implementation 900 in FIG. 9 shows that a Xn interface between two regenerative satellite (such as, a first RAN device and a second RAN device) may not transfer the data. NG signaling may be transmitted via a route 910, which is from the first RAN device to a CN device and passes the second RAN device. In this way, in the absence of a feeder link between the first RAN device and a gateway located between the first RAN device and the CN device, the NG signaling can be successfully transmitted from the first RAN device to the CN device. It should be noted that the NTN gateways as show on the route 910 can be different or the same NTN gateway. Although separate CNs are illustrated in FIG. 9, depending on the implementations, there may be one CN and the CN devices on the route 910 can be different or the same CN device in the CN (s) .

[0132] FIG. 10 illustrates a flowchart of a method 1000 implemented at a first radio access network (RAN) device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 1000 will be described from the perspective of a RAN device 130 in FIG. 1.

[0133] At block 1010, the first RAN device (e.g., a RAN device 130) determines first NG signaling, the first NG signaling comprising Xn signaling to be transmitted to a second RAN device in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) and first assistance information, the first assistance information at least indicating a second identity of the second RAN device.

[0134] At block 1020, the first RAN device (e.g., a RAN device 130) transmits the first  NG signaling to a core network (CN) device over a first NG interface between the first RAN device and the CN device, to cause the CN device to forward the Xn signaling to the second RAN device.

[0135] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the Xn signaling is to be transmitted to the second RAN device, the first RAN device determines whether an inter-satellite link (ISL) is established between the first RAN device and the second RAN device; and in accordance with a determination of absence of the ISL established between the first RAN device and the second RAN device, determines the first NG signaling.

[0136] In some example embodiments, the first assistance information further indicates at least one of the following: a first identity of the first RAN device, a cause value for the first NG signaling, the cause value indicating ISL interruption, an inter-RAN device interface identity between the first RAN device and the second RAN device, an allowed transmitting time for the first NG signaling, or a data path switch indication indicating a data forwarding change for the Xn signaling; and / or wherein the Xn signaling is comprised in a transparent container in the first NG signaling.

[0137] In some example embodiments, the first RAN device transmits the first NG signaling to the CN device in a first NG procedure, the first NG procedure being defined for forwarding of Xn signaling over the NG interface.

[0138] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination of absence of ISL established between the first RAN device and the second RAN device, the first RAN device determines the first NG signaling to be a first predetermined type of NG signaling that is corresponding to a type of the Xn signaling.

[0139] In some example embodiments, the first predetermined type of NG signaling comprises one of the following: handover required signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device, the handover required signaling being used to trigger handover request signaling from the CN device to a further RAN device, user equipment (UE) context release request signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device, the UE context release request signaling being used to trigger UE context release signaling from the CN device to a further RAN device, or uplink RAN early status transfer signaling transmitted from a RAN device to the CN device, the uplink RAN early status transfer signaling being used to trigger downlink RAN early status transfer signaling from the CN  device to a further RAN device.

[0140] In some example embodiments, the Xn signaling is handover request signaling, and the first NG signaling is the handover required signaling; the Xn signaling is UE context release signaling, and the first NG signaling is the UE context release request signaling; or the Xn signaling is early status transfer signaling, and the first NG signaling is the uplink RAN early status transfer signaling.

[0141] In some example embodiments, the first RAN device determines the first NG signaling to be uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling.

[0142] In some example embodiments, the first RAN device determines whether a first pausing indication for forwarding of Xn signaling over the first NG interface is received from the CN device or an NTN control device; and in accordance with a determination that the first pausing indication is not received from the CN device, transmits the first NG signaling to the CN device, and wherein the first RAN device, in accordance with a determination that the first pausing indication is received from the CN device, prevents the first NG signaling from being transmitted to the CN device.

[0143] In some example embodiments, the first RAN device receives, from the CN device or an NTN control device, configuration information related to the ISL between the first RAN device and the second RAN device, the configuration information indicating at least one of the following: an indication of a start time and an end time of interruption of the ISL, a second pausing indication indicating a start of the interruption of the ISL, a resume indication indicating an end of the interruption of the ISL, at least one operation indication of the first RAN device before, during, and / or after the interruption of the ISL.

[0144] In some example embodiments, at least one operation indication of the first RAN device comprises at least one of the following: a first operation indication of not trigging a Xn procedure over the ISL before the interruption of the ISL starts, a second operation indication of pausing at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL starts, or a third operation indication of resuming the at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL ends.

[0145] FIG. 11 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1100 implemented at a core network (CN) device in accordance with some embodiments of the present  disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 1100 will be described from the perspective of the CN device 155 in FIG. 1.

[0146] At block 1110, the CN device 155 receives, from a first radio access network (RAN) device in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) , first NG signaling over a first NG interface between the first RAN device and the CN device, the first NG signaling comprising Xn signaling and first assistance information, the first assistance information at least indicating a second identity of a second RAN device.

[0147] At block 1120, the CN device 155 transmits, based on the first assistance information, second NG signaling to the second RAN device over a second NG interface between the CN device and the second RAN device, the second NG signaling at least comprising the Xn signaling.

[0148] In some example embodiments, the first assistance information further indicates at least one of the following: a first identity of the first RAN device, a cause value for the first NG signaling, the cause value indicating ISL interruption, an inter-RAN device interface identity between the first RAN device and the second RAN device, an allowed transmitting time for the first NG signaling, or a data path switch indication indicating a data forwarding change for the Xn signaling; and / or wherein the Xn signaling is comprised in a transparent container in the first NG signaling.

[0154] In some example embodiments, the first NG signaling comprises uplink RAN configuration transfer signaling or uplink RAN status transfer signaling; and wherein the second NG signaling comprises downlink RAN configuration transfer signaling or downlink RAN status transfer signaling.

[0155] In some example embodiments, the CN device transmits, to the first RAN device, a first pausing indication for forwarding of Xn signaling over the first NG interface.

[0157] In some example embodiments, at least one operation indication of the first RAN device comprises at least one of the following: a first operation indication of not trigging a Xn procedure over the ISL before the interruption of the ISL starts, a second operation indication of pausing at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL starts, or a third operation indication of resuming the at least one on-going Xn procedure when the interruption of the ISL ends.

[0158] In some example embodiments, the CN device comprises an access and mobility management function (AMF) in a core network.

[0159] FIG. 12 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1200 implemented at a second radio access network (RAN) device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 1200 will be described from the perspective of a RAN device 130 in FIG. 1.

[0160] At block 1210, the second RAN device (e.g., a RAN device 130) receives, from a core network (CN) device, second NG signaling to the second RAN device over a second NG interface between the CN device and the second RAN device in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) , the second NG signaling at least comprising Xn signaling from a first RAN device.
