[0017] The present description describes various embodiments of systems, apparatuses, devices, and methods for wireless communications related to energy saving features.

[0018] Fig. 1 shows a diagram of an example wireless communication system 100 including a plurality of communication nodes (or just nodes) that are configured to wirelessly communicate with each other. In general, the communication nodes include at least one user device 102 and at least one network device 104. The example wireless communication system 100 in Fig. 1 is shown as including two user devices 102, including a first user device 102 (1) and a second user device 102 (2) , and one device 104. However, various other examples of the wireless communication system 100 that include any of various combinations of one or more user devices 102 and / or one or more network devices 104 may be possible.

[0019] In general, a user device as described herein, such as the user device 102, may include a single electronic device or apparatus, or multiple (e.g., a network of) electronic devices or apparatuses, capable of communicating wirelessly over a network. A user device may comprise or otherwise be referred to as a user terminal, a user terminal device, or a user equipment (UE) . Additionally, a user device may be or include, but not limited to, a mobile device (such as a mobile phone, a smart phone, a smart watch, a tablet, a laptop computer, vehicle or other vessel (human, motor, or engine-powered, such as an automobile, a plane, a train, a ship, or a bicycle as non-limiting examples) or a fixed or stationary device, (such as a desktop computer or other computing device that is not ordinarily moved for long periods of time, such as appliances, other relatively heavy devices including Internet of things (IoT) , or computing devices used in commercial or industrial environments, as non-limiting examples) . In various embodiments, a user device 102 may include transceiver circuitry 106 coupled to an antenna 108 to effect wireless communication with the network device 104. The transceiver circuitry 106 may also be coupled to a processor 110, which may also be coupled to a memory 112 or other storage device. The memory 112 may store therein instructions or code that, when read and executed by the processor 110, cause the processor 110 to implement various ones of the methods described herein.

[0020] Additionally, in general, a network device as described herein, such as the network device 104, may include a single electronic device or apparatus, or multiple (e.g., a network of)  electronic devices or apparatuses, and may comprise one or more wireless access nodes, base stations, or other wireless network access points capable of communicating wirelessly over a network with one or more user devices and / or with one or more other network devices 104. For example, the network device 104 may comprise a 4G LTE base station, a 5G NR base station, a 5G central-unit base station, a 5G distributed-unit base station, a next generation Node B (gNB) , an enhanced Node B (eNB) , or other similar or next-generation (e.g., 6G) base stations, in various embodiments. A network device 104 may include transceiver circuitry 114 coupled to an antenna 116, which may include an antenna tower 118 in various approaches, to effect wireless communication with the user device 102 or another network device 104. The transceiver circuitry 114 may also be coupled to one or more processors 120, which may also be coupled to a memory 122 or other storage device. The memory 122 may store therein instructions or code that, when read and executed by the processor 120, cause the processor 120 to implement one or more of the methods described herein.

[0021] In various embodiments, two communication nodes in the wireless system 100-such as a user device 102 and a network device 104, two user devices 102 without a network device 104, or two network devices 104 without a user device 102-may be configured to wirelessly communicate with each other in or over a mobile network and / or a wireless access network according to one or more standards and / or specifications. In general, the standards and / or specifications may define the rules or procedures under which the communication nodes can wirelessly communicate, which, in various embodiments, may include those for communicating in millimeter (mm) -Wave bands, and / or with multi-antenna schemes and beamforming functions. In addition or alternatively, the standards and / or specifications are those that define a radio access technology and / or a cellular technology, such as Fourth Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) , Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , or New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) , as non-limiting examples.

[0022] Additionally, in the wireless system 100, the communication nodes are configured to wirelessly communicate signals between each other. In general, a communication in the wireless system 100 between two communication nodes can be or include a transmission or a reception, and is generally both simultaneously, depending on the perspective of a particular node in the  communication. For example, for a given communication between a first node and a second node where the first node is transmitting a signal to the second node and the second node is receiving the signal from the first node, the first node may be referred to as a source or transmitting node or device, the second node may be referred to as a destination or receiving node or device, and the communication may be considered a transmission for the first node and a reception for the second node. Of course, since communication nodes in a wireless system 100 can both send and receive signals, a single communication node may be both a transmitting / source node and a receiving / destination node simultaneously or switch between being a source / transmitting node and a destination / receiving node.

[0023] Also, particular signals can be characterized or defined as either an uplink (UL) signal, a downlink (DL) signal, or a sidelink (SL) signal. An uplink signal is a signal transmitted from a user device 102 to a network device 104. A downlink signal is a signal transmitted from a network device 104 to a user device 102. A sidelink signal is a signal transmitted from a one user device 102 to another user device 102, or a signal transmitted from one network device 104 to another network device 104. Also, for sidelink transmissions, a first / source user device 102 directly transmits a sidelink signal to a second / destination user device 102 without any forwarding of the sidelink signal to a network device 104.

[0024] Additionally, signals communicated between communication nodes in the system 100 may be characterized or defined as a data signal or a control signal. In general, a data signal is a signal that includes or carries data, such multimedia data (e.g., voice and / or image data) , and a control signal is a signal that carries control information that configures the communication nodes in certain ways in order to communicate with each other, or otherwise controls how the communication nodes communicate data signals with each other. Also, certain signals may be defined or characterized by combinations of data / control and uplink / downlink / sidelink, including uplink control signals, uplink data signals, downlink control signals, downlink data signals, sidelink control signals, and sidelink data signals.

[0025] For at least some specifications, such as 5G NR, data and control signals are transmitted and / or carried on physical channels. Generally, a physical channel corresponds to a set of time-frequency resources used for transmission of a signal. Different types of physical channels  may be used to transmit different types of signals. For example, physical data channels (or just data channels) , also herein called traffic channels, are used to transmit data signals, and physical control channels (or just control channels) are used to transmit control signals. Example types of traffic channels (or physical data channels) include, but are not limited to, a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) used to communicate downlink data signals, a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) used to communicate uplink data signals, and a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH) used to communicate sidelink data signals. In addition, example types of physical control channels include, but are not limited to, a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) used to communicate downlink control signals, a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) used to communicate uplink control signals, and a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) used to communicate sidelink control signals. As used herein for simplicity, unless specified otherwise, a particular type of physical channel is also used to refer to a signal that is transmitted on that particular type of physical channel, and / or a transmission on that particular type of transmission. As an example illustration, a PDSCH refers to the physical downlink shared channel itself, a downlink data signal transmitted on the PDSCH, or a downlink data transmission. Accordingly, a communication node transmitting or receiving a PDSCH means that the communication node is transmitting or receiving a signal on a PDSCH.

[0026] Additionally, for at least some specifications, such as 5G NR, and / or for at least some types of control signals, a control signal that a communication node transmits may include control information comprising the information necessary to enable transmission of one or more data signals between communication nodes, and / or to schedule one or more data channels (or one or more transmissions on data channels) . For example, such control information may include the information necessary for proper reception, decoding, and demodulation of a data signals received on physical data channels during a data transmission, and / or for uplink scheduling grants that inform the user device about the resources and transport format to use for uplink data transmissions. In some embodiments, the control information includes downlink control information (DCI) that is transmitted in the downlink direction from a network device 104 to a user device 102. In other embodiments, the control information includes uplink control information (UCI) that is transmitted in the uplink direction from a user device 102 to a network device 104, or sidelink control  information (SCI) that is transmitted in the sidelink direction from one user device 102 (1) to another user device 102 (2) .

[0027] Fig. 2 is a flow chart of an example method 200 for wireless communication related to feature communication. At block 202, a network device 104 determines at least one configuration of at least one feature. At block 204, the network device 104 communicates (transmits and / or receives) one or more channels or signals (i.e., at least one channel and / or at least one signal) according to the at least one feature.

[0028] Fig. 3 is a flow chart of another example 300 for wireless communication related to feature communication. At block 302, a user device 102 receives at least one configuration of at least one feature. At block 304, the user device communicates (transmits and / or receives) one or more channels or signals (i.e., at least one channel and / or at least one signal) according to the at least one feature.

[0029] In some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the user device 102 is configured to communicate with a first radio access technology (RAT) , and a second RAT in the same spectrum or different spectrums. In some of these implementations, the at least one feature includes a first feature to share periodic signals and / or channels of the first RAT and the second RAT. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, at least one of the network device 104 or the user device 102 communicates only a part of a set of signals and / or channels associated with the second RAT when the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 operates according to the first feature to share the periodic signals and / or channels.

[0030] In addition or alternatively, in some of implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the at least one feature includes a second feature that transmission of at least one synchronization signal or a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) associated with the first RAT is required. In some of these implementations, further in the second feature, an indication to transmit the at least one of a synchronization signal or a PBCH associated with the second RAT is absent, or the second feature indicates to transmit the at least one of a synchronization signal or a PBCH associated with the second RAT in an aperiodic manner.

[0031] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the at least one feature includes a third feature indicating at least one of a first mode and a second mode, wherein: in the first mode, the network device 104 does not transmit at least one of a synchronization signal or a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) associated with the second RAT; and in a second mode, the network device 104 transmits at least one of a synchronization signal or a PBCH aperiodically.

[0032] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the user device 102 communicates with a cell free scheme, and the at least one feature includes a fourth feature indicating at least one of: a first mode, a second mode, and a third mode. In the first mode, the user device 102 communicates according to a single access point (AP) -based transmission. In the second mode, the user device 102 communicates with at least one of a set of APs selected to be configured in an energy saving mode. In the third mode, the user device 102 communicates with no APs selected to be configured in an energy saving mode.

[0033] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the user device 102 communicates with a cell free scheme, and the at least one feature includes a fifth feature indicating a reduced maximum number of channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) , sounding reference signals (SRS) , and / or channel state information (CSI) reports.

[0034] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, a plurality of carriers are deployed, and the at least one feature includes a sixth feature indicating at least one of a first mode and a second mode. In the first mode, the network device 104 transmits a synchronization signal and / or a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) with only one of the plurality of carriers. In the second mode, the network device 104 transmits a synchronization signal and / or a PBCH with at least one of the plurality of carriers. In some of these implementations, in the first mode, the synchronization signal and / or the PBCH transmitted on a carrier indicates whether a system information block (SIB) is only for the carrier or is for one or more secondary carriers. In addition or alternatively, in some of these implementations, in the first mode, the SIB is transmitted on a primary carrier and is used to schedule one or more SIBs of one or more secondary carriers. In addition or alternatively, in some of these implementations, in  the second mode, at least one periodical signal and / or channel is transmitted on-demand on one of the plurality of carriers.

[0035] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the at least one feature includes a seventh feature indicating at least one of a first mode, a second mode, and a third mode. In the first mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 perform a regionalized cell based transmission in a cell. In the second mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 perform a cell-based transmission with an energy saving mode configured. In the third mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 perform a cell-based transmission without an energy saving mode configured. In some of these implementations, in the first mode, the cell is regionalized such that at least one transmission parameter with different values are used to transmit a channel or a signal with same contents in different regions of the cell.

[0036] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300, the at least one feature includes an eighth feature indicating at least one of a first mode and a second mode. In the first mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 communicate without full duplex. In the second mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 communicate with a fallback operation of full duplex. In some of these implementations, in the second mode, the fallback operation of full duplex includes a fallback from a full duplex mode to a different communication mode with a time division duplex (TDD) operation or a subband full duplex (SBFD) operation.

[0037] Other methods and / or other implementations of the method 200 and / or the method 300 are possible, including but not limited to those that combine one or more aspects from each of two or more of the methods 200 and 300 and / or those that include fewer than all of the aspects for an above recited implementation of the method 200 and / or 300.

[0038] Further details of actions performed by communication nodes in the wireless communication system 100, any or all of which may be implemented in any of various implementations of the method 200, the method 300, and / or other methods, are now described.

[0039] In some implementations of the wireless communication system 100, including but not limited to those utilizing 5G NR, a synchronization signal and physical broadcast channel (PBCH) block (SSB) may include a primary synchronization signal (PSS) and a secondary synchronization signal (SSS) , each occupying one symbol and 127 subcarriers, and a PBCH spanning across three OFDM symbols and 240 subcarriers, with one symbol left as an unused part in the middle for the SSS. Additionally, possible time locations of SSBs within a half-frame may be determined by sub-carrier spacing and the periodicity of the half-frames where SSBs are transmitted may be configured by the network device 104. During a half-frame, different SSBs may be transmitted in different spatial directions, such as by using different beams, spanning the coverage area of a cell. Within the frequency span of a carrier, multiple SSBs may be transmitted. The PCIs of SSBs transmitted in different frequency locations do not have to be unique, i.e. different SSBs in the frequency domain can have different PCIs. However, when an SSB is associated with a remaining minimum system information (RMSI) , the SSB may correspond to an individual cell, which has a unique NR cell global identifier (NCGI) . Such an SSB is referred to as a cell-defining SSB (CD-SSB) . Additionally, a primary cell (Pcell) is (and in some implementations always is) associated with a CD-SSB located on a synchronization raster. In addition or alternatively, a master information block (MIB) on a PBCH may provides a user device 102 with parameters (e.g. a control resource set #0 (CORESET#0) configuration) for monitoring of PDCCHs for scheduling PDSCHs that carry a system information block 1 (SIB1) . A PBCH may also indicate that there is no associated SIB1, in which case the user device 102 may be directed to another frequency from where to search for an SSB that is associated with a SIB1, as well as a frequency range where the user device 102 may assume that no SSB associated with a SIB1 is present. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, an indicated frequency range may be confined within a contiguous spectrum allocation of the same operator in which SSB is detected. As a result, after receiving a SSB, in case no SIB1 is indicated by a PBCH, the user device 102 may will search another frequency; otherwise, the user device 102 may monitor one or more PDCCHs for scheduling a SIB1.

[0040] The present description describes various implementations of at least one feature in the wireless communication system 100. To implement the at least one feature, one or more configurations of the one or more features may be determined, such as by the network device 104,  and / or communicated between communication nodes, such as from the network device 104 to a user device 102. In general, as used herein, a configuration associated with a feature may indicate to a communication node (e.g., a user device 102 and / or a network device 104) how to function or operate in order to implement the feature. As described in further detail below, one or more of the features may be referred to as an energy saving feature, in that it is implemented with the intent or purpose of saving energy and / or that implementation of the feature saves energy in the wireless communication system 100. However, in some implementations, an energy saving feature, such as described below, may be implemented without necessarily for the intent or purpose of saving energy and / or without actually saving energy. In this context, one or more of the below described energy saving features may be otherwise more generally referred to as just a “feature” , although the configuration (s) , mode (s) , action (s) , requirement (s) , etc. as described below may be otherwise the same.

[0041] Accordingly, in some implementations, communication nodes of the wireless communication system 100 may implement at least one energy saving feature in order to save energy and / or reduce energy consumption. In some of these implementations, the network device 104 may determine a plurality of configurations of the at least one energy saving feature, and / or a user device 102 may receive a plurality of configurations of at least one energy saving feature. Correspondingly, the network device 104 and the user device 102 may communicate with each other (e.g., the network device 104 may transmit and the user device 102 may receive, and / or the network device 104 may receive and the user device 102 may transmit) according to the at least one energy saving feature. The following describes various energy saving features, any or all of which may be used independently or in combination with each other to determine how the network device 104 and the user device 102 may communicate with each other, including in ways that may be desirable for purposes of minimizing energy consumption.

[0042] In some implementations, a user device 102 may be configured to communicate with and / or using a plurality of different radio access technologies (RATs) . The user device may communicate using the RATs in the same spectrum or different spectrums, in any of various implementations The plurality of RATs may include a first RAT and a second RAT. In particular implementations, one of the first RAT and the second RAT is 5G NR and the other of the first RAT  and the second RAT 6G, although other types of RATs for the first RAT and / or the second RAT may be possible in any of various other implementations. Fig. 4 shows a schematic diagram of a user device 102 (UE 1) and a network device 104 communicating using two RATs (e.g., a first RAT in a 5G cell and a second RAT in a 6G cell) in the same spectrum in which the user device 102 is connected. Fig. 5 shows a schematic diagram of a user device 102 (UE 1) and a network device 104 communicating using two RATs (e.g., 5G and 6G) in two different spectrums in which the user device 102 is connected.

[0043] In some implementations, a first energy saving feature of the at least one energy saving feature may be to share periodic signals and / or channels of the first RAT and the second RAT. For example, using 6G by sharing periodic channel (s) and / or signal (s) among 6G and 5G can be applied or implemented. As a result, energy saving may be achieved. In addition or alternatively, as a result, for an operator without a 6G band, using 6G by sharing periodic channel (s) and / or signal (s) among 6G and 5G may be applied or implemented. For example, in one situation, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may be configured to communicate a set of, and / or a plurality of types of, signals and / or channels. However, when periodic channel (s) and / or signal (s) are shared, the communication nodes, when using the 6G system, may communicate (transmit and / or receive) only a part of the channel (s)  / signal (s) , such as to still effective the given transmission. In some of these implementations, aperiodic channel (s) and / or signal (s) may be communicated (transmitted and / or received) in the 6G system. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the first energy energy saving feature may be implemented using a software upgrade, such as in order to realize 6G based on 5G. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the part of the channel (s) and / or signal (s) may include: one or more traffic channels, such as one or more PDSCHs and / or one or more PUSCHs; one or more UE-specific channels and / or signals; and / or one or more common channels and / or signals.

[0044] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the at least one energy saving feature may include a second energy saving feature that transmission of at least one synchronization signal or a PBCH associated with a first RAT (e.g., 5G) is required. In some of these implementations, a synchronization signal may include a synchronization signal and PBCH block (SSB) , a primary synchronization signal (PSS) , and / or a secondary synchronization signal  (SSS) . In addition or alternatively, in some of these implementations, when a synchronization signal and / or a PBCH transmitted using the first RAT (e.g., by a 5G network) is insufficient and / or is identified as being insufficient (e.g., when the information provided by a physical cell identification (PCID) or a master information block (MIB) is insufficient, a synchronization signal (e.g., PSS or SSS) and / or a PBCH associated with the second RAT (e.g., by a 6G network) may be transmitted. In some of these implementations, the first RAT (e.g., 5G) synchronization signal (s) and / or PBCH may be regarded as a baseline, and the second network (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) and / or PBCH may be regarded as optional, and / or the second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) or PBCH may be transmitted in an aperiodic manner. For example, second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH may be on-demand triggered by the network device 104 or the user device 102. In addition or alternatively, second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH may be transmitted periodically. In addition or alternatively, an indication to transmit (or of a requirement to transmit) second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) and / or a PBCH may be absent from the second energy saving feature.

[0045] In addition or alternatively, energy saving schemes may be implemented for second network (e.g., 6G) periodic channel (s) and / or signal (s) transmission. For example, in some implementations, a third energy saving feature may indicate or include at least one of a first mode and a second node. The first mode may indicate or include that second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, and / or SSS) and / or PBCHs are not to be transmitted. The second mode may indicate or include that second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or PBCHs may be transmitted aperiodically. In other implementations, the second mode may indicate or include that periodic second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or PBCHs may be combined with discontinuous transmission (DTX) and / or discontinuation reception (DRX) . In additio nor alternatively, in some implementations, the third energy saving feature may indicate or include a third mode that indicates that periodic second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or PBCHs are permitted to be transmitted.

[0046] To further illustrate the third energy saving feature, for example, for the first mode, the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network is in a deep energy-saving mode, which may include the second RAT network being turned off, or which may include only using the second RAT network to transmit services or transmission modes that the first RAT (e.g., 5G) network cannot support. For the second mode, the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network is turned on and in an energy-saving mode, such as a mode configured with cell DTX and / or DRX. For the third mode, the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network is turned on and not in an energy-saving mode, such as in a full power mode.

[0047] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, information provided by second RAT (e.g., 6G) synchronization signal (s) (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or PBCHs may include at least one of the following: a cell index for the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network based on a first RAT (e.g., 5G) cell identification (ID) and / or second RAT (e.g., 6G) specific information. In some of these implementations, the cell index for the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network may be indicated by a PSS and / or a SSS associated with the second RAT (e.g., 6G) and / or may be indicated based on a cell ID of the first RAT (e.g., 5G) network. For example, one or more cell indexes for the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network may be derived by splitting one cell ID of the first RAT (e.g., 5G) network. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, second RAT (e.g., 6G) specific information may be indicated by a MIB associated with the second RAT (e.g., 6G) .

[0048] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the first RAT (e.g., 5G) network and the second RAT (e.g., 6G) network may be deployed by the same node with carrier aggregation, or endogenous carrier aggregation based on the same spectrum with RAT switching, with both RATs being connected to by a user device 102 simultaneously, or by being TDMed for the different RATs.

[0049] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the third energy saving feature may include a fourth mode supporting an association of UE energy saving and network energy saving. In any of various implementations, the association may be characterized as loosely associated or tightly associated. For example, for the loose association, one or more energy saving aspects or mechanisms for the user device 102 and one or more energy saving aspects or mechanisms for the network device 104 may be independently configured. In addition or alternatively, for the tight association, one or more UE energy saving aspects or mechanisms and  one or more network energy saving aspects or mechanisms may could be configured in combination or concurrently, or implementation of one may be dependent on the implementation of the other. For example, the first mode of each of the user device 102 and the network device 104 may be implemented in combination. As another example, the second mode of the user device 102 may be implemented in combination with the second mode of the network device 104. As another example, the first mode of the user device 102 may be implemented in combination with the second mode of the network device 104. As another example, the second mode of the user device 102 may be implemented in combination with the first mode of the network device 104. Other mode combinations are possible.

[0050] In sum, when two RATs are utilizing, one or more energy saving features may be utilized to save energy. In one energy saving feature, common information of one RAT is shared, such that only additional common information of the other RAT may be transmitted. As a result of utilizing one or more of such energy saving feature, energy saving and / or system efficiency may be improved.

[0051] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the wireless communication system 100 may deploy or implement cell free. The term “cell free” is defined from the view of the user device 102, and refers to the user device 102 being centric in a cell and may be connected to more than one access point (AP) around the user device 102. In some implementations, cell free may be deployed as a potential scheme to achieve distributed cell deployment.

[0052] Fig. 6 shows a diagram of a user device-centric cell. As shown in Fig. 6, a first user device 102 (UE1) may connect to an AP set that includes AP#2, AP#4, and AP#5. Correspondingly, a first cell (cell#1) from the view of the user device 102 is defined as including the three APs (AP #s 2, 4, 5) inside. According to the user device-defined cell, the user device 102 may receive services from multiple APs. In turn, interference from adjacent APs may reduced, and / or the user device 102 may have more flexibility and / or autonomy for selecting a serving AP.

[0053] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the APs in a cell free wireless communication system 100 may include a single antenna or a relatively small number of antennas, while a relatively large number of APs may be deployed within a region. In some of these implementations, the traffic of multiple APs may be forwarded to a central processing unit (CPU) ,  and / or the same frequency resources may be used for different user devices 102 in different locations.

[0054] However, while a cell free system may provide more flexibility and / or autonomy for the user device 102 to select a serving AP, and / or while interference from adjacent APs may be reduced, the network device 104 side may experience greater complexity and / or higher energy consumption. To offset or mitigate the higher energy consumption, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize a fourth energy saving feature that indicates or includes at least one of the following three modes. A first mode may indicate or include that a single AP based transmission. For example, a user device 102 may communicate according to a single AP-based transmission. A second mode may indicate or include that the user device 102 communicates with at least one of a set of APs selected to be configured in an energy saving mode. A third mode may indicate or include that the user device 102 communicates with no APs selected to be configured in an energy saving mode.

[0055] To further illustrate for example, in the first mode, the cell free wireless communication system 100 may be in a deep energy-saving mode, which can be achieved by single AP based transmission. That is, the user device 102 may select only one AP. In some of these implementations, the AP may transmit the baseline or a first stage SSB and / or a PSS, a SSS, and / or a PBCH. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the single AP may be derived or determined by turning off the other APs in the same AP set. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, an on-off configurations of the APs (e.g., which AP is turned on and which APs are turned off) may be indicated by the network device 104, such as via a DCI, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) , or radio resource control (RRC) signaling. In addition or alternatively, for the second mode, the cell free wireless communication system 100 is in an energy-saving mode. For example, at least one AP in the user device 102 may be selected to be configured in an energy saving mode. For example, at least one AP is configured with DTX and / or DRX, or one or more APs in the same AP set are turned off. For the third mode, the cell free wireless communication system 100 is not in an energy-saving mode, such as in a full power mode. In some implementations of the third mode, all of the APs in an AP set selected by a user device 102 are configured without being in an energy saving mode.

[0056] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations implementing the fourth energy saving feature, for one mode utilizing energy saving, two DL-only APs and an UL-only AP may be associated as an aggregated AP, which may be regarded as being configured with an energy saving mode. For example, in some implementations, the aggregated AP may be used as, or in replace of, the single AP in the first mode. As another example, in some other implementations, the aggregated AP may be used as the AP configured with the energy saving mode in the second mode.

[0057] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, mode acquisition may be indicated to a user device 102 from cell-free central processing unit (CPU) or a network device 104 (e.g., a gNB) , or via user device detection. For example, a user device’s 102 AP set may include only one AP based on measurement (e.g., reference signal received power (RSRP) ) at a time within a predefined or configured period of time.

[0058] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the user device 102 may obtain the an AP map and select APs according to its mobile route instead of AP sets. In some of these implementations, the user device 102 may do so by prediction. For example, Fig. 7 shows a diagram of AP selection. As shown in Fig. 7, UE1 is in a current UE1 cell 1 with an AP set including: {APs 2, 4, 5} . Based on an AP map (e.g. AP 1-9) , the UE 1 may select AP5 and AP6 based on an actual or a predicted mobile route, instead of connecting to the individual APs of AP set 1 {AP 2, 4, 5} of UE 1 cell 1 and to the individual APs of AP set2 {AP 3, 5, 6} of UE 1 cell 2.

[0059] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, including but not limited to situations where a user device 102 is not aware of an AP, a fifth energy saving feature may be implemented. The fifth energy saving feature may indicate a reduced maximum number of channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) , a reduced maximum number of sounding reference signals (SRS) , and / or a reduced maximum number of channel state information (CSI) reports. For example, different CSI-RS resources may be configured to represent and / or denote different APs. As a result, a CSI-RS resource may be used in an energy saving mode, such as described above, instead of an AP.

[0060] In sum, through utilization of the one or more of the above-described energy saving features, such as in a cell free environment, energy saving system and / or improved efficiency in the wireless communication system 100 may be achieved.

[0061] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, multiple carriers may be deployed in the wireless communication system 100, including in situations where the wireless communication system 100 and / or the network device 104 may be in an IDLE state and / or an inactive state.

[0062] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, multiple carriers may be supported, configured, and / or detected by a user device 102. In at least some of these implementations, there may be a primary or anchor carrier and one or more secondary or non-anchor carriers. A primary or anchor carrier is a carrier where a user device 102 is capable of receiving a SSB, system information and / or paging. Additionally, a secondary or non-anchor carrier is a carrier in which a SSB and / or system information may or may not be transmitted.

[0063] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, energy saving may be experienced through utilization of a sixth energy saving feature, including but not limited to configurations where 6G is utilized, and / or periodic channel and / or signal transmission. The sixth energy saving feature may include or indicate at least one of following modes. A first mode may include or indicate that the network device 104 may transmit a synchronization signal (e.g., a SSB, a PSS, and / or a SSS) and / or a PBCH with or in only one of the carriers. In some of these implementations, in the first mode the synchronization signal (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or the PBCH transmitted on a carrier may indicate whether a SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1, generally referred to as SIBx) is only for the carrier or is for one or more secondary or non-anchor carriers. In addition or alternatively, in some of these implementations, in the first mode, the SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) may be transmitted on a primary carrier and is used to schedule one or more SIBs (SIB1 or another SIB) of one or more secondary carriers. In addition, a second mode may include or indicate that the network device 104 may transmit a synchronization signal (e.g., a SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH with at least one of a plurality of carriers. In some of these implementations, in the second mode, at least one periodical signal and / or channel may be transmitted on-demand on one of the plurality of carriers. In addition, a third mode may indicate or include that the network device 104 may transmit a synchronization signal (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH with or on all carriers.

[0064] To further illustrate the sixth energy saving feature for example, for the first mode, the network device 104 may be in a deep energy-saving mode, which may include the network device 104 transmitting a synchronization signal (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH only on a primary or anchor carrier. In some of these implementations, the synchronization signal (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH may also indicate whether a SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) is only for this carrier or is for one or more secondary or non-anchor carriers. In some of these implementations, a SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) transmitted on the primary or anchor carrier may be used to schedule one or more SIB1s (or one or more SIBs other than SIB1) of one or more secondary or non-anchor carriers. Additionally, for the second mode, the network device 104 is in an energy-saving mode, such that at least one carrier may be used to transmit a synchronization signal (e.g., SSB, PSS, SSS) and / or a PBCH) . In some of these implementations, in the first mode, one or more other periodical signals may be transmitted on-demand or periodically. For example, a SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) transmitted on a secondary or non-anchor carrier is on-demand triggered by a wake up signal (WUS) , which may be transmitted on a primary or anchor carrier. As another example, for example, a SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) may be transmitted on a secondary or non-anchor carrier and the transmission of the SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) may be on-demand triggered by a WUS, which is transmitted on the same secondary or non-anchor carrier as the SIB1 (or a SIB other than SIB1) or another secondary or non-anchor carrier. For the third mode, the network device 104 is turned on and not in an energy-saving mode. For example, the network device 104 may be in a full power mode, such that multiple carriers may be used for an IDLE state and / or an inactive state.

[0065] In sum, through utilization of the above-described sixth energy saving feature, information, including common information, may be transmitted on one carrier and additional common information may be transmitted on another carrier, if needed, which may provide energy saving and system efficiency improvements.

[0066] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, regionalization of a cell or a cell grid may be deployed in the wireless communication system 100. In further detail, regionalization of a cell or a cell grid can be achieved by dividing one cell into multiple regions or areas. Correspondingly, one or more transmission parameters used for different regions or areas  may be same or different. For example, one cell may be divided into multiple regions or areas for near field communication, and codebook design may be different for different regions or areas.

[0067] Additionally, in some implementations, the at least energy saving feature may be implemented in conjunction with cell or cell grid regionalization. For example, a seventh energy saving feature may be implemented. The seventh energy saving feature may include or indicate at least one of following modes. In a first mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may perform a regionalized cell based transmission in a cell. In a second mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may perform a cell-based transmission with an energy saving mode configured. In a third mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may perform a cell-based transmission without an energy saving mode configured.

[0068] In some implementations, for the first mode, the network device 104 is in an energy-saving mode, which may be achieved by grid or regionalization of the cell based transmission. For example, at least one transmission parameter with different values may be used to transmit a signal or channel with the same contents (e.g., carrying the same data) in different regions or areas of the cell. In some of these implementations, a lower transmission power value for a closer point, region, or area may be used to transmit a periodic signal 1, and a higher transmission power value for a farther point, region, or area may be used to transmit a periodic signal 2 with the same beam. In any of various embodiments, signal 1 and signal 2 may be the same as or different from each other, such as by carrying the same data or different data.

[0069] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations for example, SSB beam sweeping may be transmitted or performed with the same transmit power value or different transmit power values in different regions or areas in a cell. For example, Fig. 8 shows a diagram of an example regionalization of cell. As shown in Fig. 8, for SSB with beam sweeping, a first group of SSB beam sweeping in first region or area may be performed or transmitted with a first power value, a second group SSB beam sweeping in second region or area may be performed or transmitted with a second power value, and a third (or lth) group of SSB beam sweeping in a third (or lth) region or area may be performed or transmitted with a third (or lth) power value. In some implementations, one or more power offsets for different regions or areas may be introduced, supported, and / or configured. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, a SSB sent in different regions or  areas may be different in structure and / or content. That is, there may be multiple SSB formats, such as SSB formats 0, 1, and 2, for example, which may be used for different scenarios or for different terminal types.

[0070] In addition or alternatively, some implementations of the seventh energy saving feature may be used or applied to uplink, such as grid or regionalization of a cell based transmission with the same of different maximum power values (Pcmax) , open loop power control (OLPC) , and / or transmit power control (TPC) .

[0071] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations for the second mode, the network device 104 is in an energy-saving mode, which may be achieved by cell-based transmission with an energy saving mode configured. For example, the cell may be configured with DTX and / or DRX. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations for the third mode, the network device 104 may not be in an energy-saving mode. For example, the network device 104 may be in a full power mode, and the cell is configured without the energy saving mode.

[0072] In sum, at least one energy saving feature may be implemented with regionalization of cell-based transmissions. For example, different transmission powers may be used for the same channel or signal transmitted in different regions or areas of the cell, which in turn may provide energy saving and / or system efficiency improvements.

[0073] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, full duplex may deployed in the wireless communication system 100. In particular implementations, full duplex may be implemented using, and / or may include, non-overlapped subband full duplex (SBFD) , inband full duplex (IBFD) , or full duplex (FD) . One or more of such full duplex schemes may be implemented by only the network device 104, or both the network 104 and the user device 102. For example, Fig. 9 shows a plot of subband configured in a carrier. As shown in Fig. 9, with a subband configured in a carrier, the subband may be an UL subband used for UL transmission, a DL subband used for DL transmission, or a DL and UL subband used for a DL transmission and / or an UL transmission.

[0074] In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, at least one energy saving feature may be implemented in conjunction with full duplex. For example, an eighth energy saving feature may include or indicate at least one of following modes can be supported. In a first mode, the  network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may communicate without full duplex (e.g., full duplex is turned off) . In a second mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may communicate with a fallback operation of full duplex. In a third mode, the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may communicate with full duplex (e.g., full duplex is turned on without energy saving being configured) .

[0075] In some implementations, for the first mode, the network device 104 is in an energy-saving mode, which may be achieved by turning off the full duplex, such that the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 do not communicate with full duplex. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, for the second mode, the network device 104 is in an energy-saving mode, in which the network device 104 and / or the user device 102 may communicate with a fallback operation of full duplex. For example, full duplex may be a fall back to IBFD. As another example, full duplex or IBFD may be a fall back to SBFD. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, the subband for both a DL transmission and an UL transmission may be a fall back to an UL subband in downlink (D) symbols and a DL subband in uplink (U) symbols, or may be a fall back to UL subband in D symbols or DL subband in U symbols. For example, full duplex, IBFD or SBFD may be fall back to a TDD operation. In addition or alternatively, in some implementations, for the third mode, the network device 104 is not in an energy-saving mode. That is, the network device 104 may be in a full power mode, and the cell may be configured without an energy saving mode.

[0076] In sum, at least one energy saving feature may be implemented in the wireless communication system 100 by turning off full duplex and / or utilizing full duplex with a fallback operation. Such implementations may result in energy saving and / or system efficiency being improved.

[0077] The description and accompanying drawings above provide specific example embodiments and implementations. The described subject matter may, however, be embodied in a variety of different forms and, therefore, covered or claimed subject matter is intended to be construed as not being limited to any example embodiments set forth herein. A reasonably broad scope for claimed or covered subject matter is intended. Among other things, for example, subject matter may be embodied as methods, devices, components, systems, or non-transitory  computer-readable media for storing computer codes. Accordingly, embodiments may, for example, take the form of hardware, software, firmware, storage media or any combination thereof. For example, the method embodiments described above may be implemented by components, devices, or systems including memory and processors by executing computer codes stored in the memory.

[0078] Throughout the specification and claims, terms may have nuanced meanings suggested or implied in context beyond an explicitly stated meaning. Likewise, the phrase “in one embodiment / implementation” as used herein does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment and the phrase “in another embodiment / implementation” as used herein does not necessarily refer to a different embodiment. It is intended, for example, that claimed subject matter includes combinations of example embodiments in whole or in part.

[0079] In general, terminology may be understood at least in part from usage in context. For example, terms, such as “and” , “or” , or “and / or, ” as used herein may include a variety of meanings that may depend at least in part on the context in which such terms are used. Typically, “or” if used to associate a list, such as A, B or C, is intended to mean A, B, and C, here used in the inclusive sense, as well as A, B or C, here used in the exclusive sense. In addition, the term “one or more” as used herein, depending at least in part upon context, may be used to describe any feature, structure, or characteristic in a singular sense or may be used to describe combinations of features, structures or characteristics in a plural sense. Similarly, terms, such as “a, ” “an, ” or “the, ” may be understood to convey a singular usage or to convey a plural usage, depending at least in part upon context. In addition, the term “based on” may be understood as not necessarily intended to convey an exclusive set of factors and may, instead, allow for existence of additional factors not necessarily expressly described, again, depending at least in part on context.

[0080] Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present solution should be or are included in any single implementation thereof. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present solution. Thus, discussions of the features and advantages, and similar language, throughout the specification may, but do not necessarily, refer to the same embodiment.

[0081] Furthermore, the described features, advantages and characteristics of the present solution may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One of ordinary skill in the relevant art will recognize, in light of the description herein, that the present solution can be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the present solution.
