[0050] The present disclosure provides methods to: (1) negotiate support of store and forward satellite operation for a specific service between a UE and a network; (2) provide store and forward satellite operation related parameters to the UE; and / or (3) enforce store and forward satellite operation related parameters by the network. The examples given below are based on evolved packet system (EPS) and 5GS procedures. However, the proposed methods herein are not limited to EPS and 5GS.

[0051] Implementation Example 1: Initial attach procedure in EPS

[0052] FIG. 5 illustrates a sequence diagram of an example method for supporting store and forward satellite operation, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. Specifically, FIG. 5 illustrate an example initial attach procedure in a EPS, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0053] Step 1 (from an eNB to a UE) : A wireless communication device (e.g., a UE) may receive a first message indicating support of the store and forward satellite operation from a wireless communication node (e.g., an eNB) . The first message may indicate at least one of: whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless  communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation and is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of control plane (CP) of a cellular internet of things (CIoT) ; whether the wireless communication node is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of CP of a CIoT; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of CP of a CIoT and is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of CP of a CIoT; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of user plane (UP) of a CIoT; whether the wireless communication node is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of UP of a CIoT; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of UP of a CIoT and is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of UP of a CIoT; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for short message service (SMS) ; whether the wireless communication node is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for SMS; whether the wireless communication node supports the store and forward satellite operation for SMS and is able to connect to the mobility management entity which supports the store and forward satellite operation for SMS.

[0054] For example, a user equipment (UE) camping on an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) cell placed on board a satellite may read / detect / determine related system information broadcast. In some embodiments, an E-UTRAN cell placed on onboard the satellite may broadcast one or more of following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation: whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation and it can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for control plane (CP) cellular internet of things (CIoT) EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization and the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for User Plane (UP) CIoT EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization and the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for short message service (SMS) ; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS; or whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS  and the wireless communication node can connect to an MME which supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS.

[0055] In some embodiments, if the E-UTRAN broadcasts above information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation, the UE may determine whether the UE can proceed to attach with the E-UTRAN based on the broadcast information. If the UE can proceed to attach, the UE may initiate an attach procedure by a transmission to the eNB. In some embodiments, the UE may send a first request message (e.g., attach request message) that includes information regarding a store and forward satellite operation to the eNB or a mobility management entity. In certain embodiments, the UE may send the first request message (e.g., attach request message) together with radio resource control (RRC) parameters. The attach request message may include one or more of the following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported by the UE; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization is supported by the UE; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization is supported; or whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported by the UE. The above information may be included in preferred network behavior, in UE network capability, in additional update type, and / or in a new information element.

[0056] The UE may send a radio resource control (RRC) message that includes information regarding the store and forward satellite operation to the wireless communication node. The wireless communication node may select the mobility management entity according to the RRC message. In the RRC connection establishment signaling associated with the attach request, the UE may indicate its support of one or more of the following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation, relevant for an MME selection. The eNB may select an MME according to a MME selection algorithm of the eNB by taking into account the support (or non-support) of the corresponding capability of the MME. The one or more of information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation may include at least one of: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported.

[0057] Step 2 (from the eNB to an MME) : The eNB may select an MME according to a MME selection algorithm of the eNB. The eNB may send / forward the attach request message to the selected MME.

[0058] Step 3 (from the MME to an HSS) : The MME may send a second request message (e.g., a update location request message) including the information regarding the store and forward satellite operation to a home subscriber server (HSS) . If there is no valid subscription context for the UE in the MME, the MME may send an update location request message to the HSS. The update location request message may include a UE indication of support of store and forward satellite operation as described in Step 1.

[0059] Step 4 (from the HSS to the MME) : The mobility management entity may receive a response message (e.g., an update location Ack message) including subscription information for the store and forward satellite operation. For example, the HSS may acknowledge the update location request message by sending an update location Ack message including subscription data to the MME. If the update location request message includes the UE indication of support of store and forward satellite operation, the HSS may verify by the UE  subscription. In some embodiments, the subscription data included in the update location Ack message may include store and forward satellite operation subscription information including one or more of the following: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported; parameters for store and forward satellite operation, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; parameters for store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT EPS optimization, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; parameters for store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT EPS optimization, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; parameters for store and forward satellite operation for SMS, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority.

[0069] Implementation Example 2: Registration procedure in 5GS

[0070] FIG. 6 illustrates a sequence diagram of an example method for supporting store and forward satellite operation, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. Specifically, FIG. 6 illustrate an example registration procedure in 5GS, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0071] Step 1 (from a UE to a RAN) : A wireless communication device (e.g., a UE) may receive a first message indicating support of the store and forward satellite operation from a wireless communication node (e.g., a RAN) .

[0072] For example, a user equipment (UE) camping on a radio access network (RAN) cell placed on board the satellite may read / detect / determine the related system information broadcast. In some embodiments, an RAN cell placed on onboard the satellite may broadcast one or more of the following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation: whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation and the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization and whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization and whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization; whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS; whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS; or whether the wireless communication node supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS and whether the wireless communication node can connect to an AMF which supports store and forward satellite operation for SMS.

[0073] In some embodiments, if the RAN broadcasts above information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation, the UE may determine whether the UE can proceed to register with the RAN based on the broadcast information. If the UE can proceed to register, the UE may initiate the registration procedure by a transmission to the RAN node. In some embodiments, the UE may send a first request message (e.g.,  registration request message) that includes information regarding a store and forward satellite operation to the RAN node or an AMF. The registration request message may include one or more of the following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; or whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported. The above information may be included in preferred network behavior, in 5G mobility management (5GMM) capability, in 5GS update type, and / or in a new information element.

[0074] The UE may send a radio resource control (RRC) message that includes information regarding the store and forward satellite operation to the RAN node. The RAN node may select an AMF according to the RRC message. In the RRC connection establishment signaling associated with the registration request, the UE may indicate its support of one or more of the following information regarding support of store and forward satellite operation, relevant for AMF selection. The RAN may select an AMF taking into account the support (or non-support) of the corresponding capability of the AMF: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; or whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported.

[0075] Step 2 (from the RAN to an AMF) : The RAN may select an AMF to an AMF selection algorithm of the RAN. The RAN may send / forward the registration request message to the selected AMF.

[0076] Step 3 (from the AMF to an UDM) : The AMF may register with a unified data management (UDM) using Nudm_UECM_Registration operation. After the AMF has successfully completed the registration operation and if the AMF does not have subscription data for the UE, the AMF may retrieve subscription data by sending Nudm_SDM_Get request message to the UDM. The request message may include UE indication of support of store and forward satellite operation as described in Step 1.

[0077] Step 4 (from the UDM to the AMF) : The mobility management element (e.g., the AMF) may receive a response message (e.g., an Nudm_SDM_Get response message) including subscription information for the store and forward satellite operation. For example, the UDM may send Nudm_SDM_Get response message to the AMF including subscription data. If the Nudm_SDM_Get request message includes UE indication of support of store and forward satellite operation, the UDM may verify by the UE subscription. In some embodiments, the subscription data included in the Nudm_SDM_Get response message may include store and forward satellite operation subscription information including one or more of the following: whether store and forward satellite operation is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization is supported; whether store and forward satellite operation for SMS is supported; parameters for store and forward satellite operation, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; parameters for store and forward satellite operation for CP CIoT 5GS optimization, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; parameters for store and forward satellite operation for UP CIoT 5GS optimization, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority; or parameters for store and forward satellite operation for SMS, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, and / or data forward priority.

[0078] Step 5 (from the AMF to the RAN) : The AMF may send an accept message (e.g., a registration accept message) indicating accepted information regarding the store and forward satellite operation to the RAN. The accept message may indicate at least one of: whether the store and forward satellite operation is supported by a network (e.g., the AMF) ; whether the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the CP of the CIoT is supported by the network; whether the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the UP of the CIoT is supported by the network; or whether the store and forward satellite operation for the SMS is supported by the network. The accept message may comprise one or more parameters related to the store and forward satellite operation. The one or more parameters may comprise at least one of: capacity of data storage for the store and forward satellite operation; a retention period for the store and forward satellite operation; a priority for data forwarding for the store and forward satellite operation; capacity of data storage for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the CP of the CIoT; a retention period for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the CP of the CIoT; a priority for data forwarding for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the CP of the CIoT; capacity of data storage for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the UP of the CIoT; a retention period for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the UP of the CIoT; a priority for data forwarding for the store and forward satellite operation for optimization of the UP of the CIoT; capacity of data storage for the store and forward satellite operation for the SMS; a retention period for the store and forward satellite operation for the SMS; or a priority for data forwarding for the store and forward satellite operation for the SMS.

[0081] Step 6 (from the RAN to the UE) : The RAN may send / forward the accept message (e.g., the registration accept message) to the UE. The RAN may store the received store and forward satellite operation that the AMF accepts and related parameters.

[0082] Step 7 (from the UE to the AMF) : The UE may send a complete message (e.g., registration complete message) to the AMF. For example, the UE may send a registration complete message indicating successful reception of the accepted information regarding the store and forward satellite operation to the AMF via the RAN to acknowledge the successful reception of accepted store and forward satellite operation and related parameters.

[0083] Implementation Example 3: Store and forward procedure in both EPS and 5GS

[0084] After successful attach or registration procedure, the UE may initiate data transmission procedure for specific service, e.g., data transport in CP CIoT optimization, data transport in UP CIoT optimization, and / or SMS message transport. The uplink data in the following procedure can be any of information mentioned above.

[0085] Onboard network element can be any network element that is placed on board satellite and that is responsible for uplink data buffer for store and forward satellite operation. For example, in EPS, the onboard network element can be an eNB, a MME, a S-GW, a P-GW for CP CIoT EPS optimization, or the onboard network element can be an eNB, a S-GW, a P-GW for UP CIoT EPS optimization, or the onboard network element can be an eNB, a MME, a SMS-GMSC (short message service gateway mobile switching center) for SMS. In another example, in 5GS, the onboard network element can be a gNB, an AMF, a SMF, for CP CIoT 5GS optimization, or the onboard network element can be a gNB, a SMF, a UPF for UP CIoT 5GS optimization, or the onboard network element can be a gNB, an AMF, a short message service function (SMSF) for SMS.

[0086] FIG. 7 illustrates a sequence diagram of an example method for supporting store and forward satellite operation, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. Specifically, FIG. 7 illustrate an example store and forward procedure, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0087] Step 1 (from a UE to an onboard network element) : The wireless communication device (e.g., the UE) may send a second message including uplink data to a network node. For example, the UE may send uplink data to the onboard network element.

[0088] Step 2 (from the onboard network element to the UE) : The wireless communication device may receive a third message corresponding to the second message from the network node. The third message may comprise at least one of: an indication that the store and forward satellite operation is applied; one or more parameters related to the store and forward satellite operation; or a cause or reason of rejection related to the store and forward satellite operation. In some embodiments, the cause or reason of rejection includes at least one of: capacity of data storage is exceeded; a retention period is expired; or a low priority is not able to be treated / handled / supported.

[0089] If the data storage quota per UE or per node is exceeded, the network element may send an appropriate rejection cause or reason, e.g., data storage quota exceeded, to the UE and may also include the uplink data not forwarded and may also include a back-off timer so that the UE can retry send the uplink data after the timer expires.

[0090] The network element may store the uplink data for the time indicated in the retention period parameter. If after the period the network element still cannot forward the uplink data to ground network via a feeder link, the network element may send an appropriate cause or reason, e.g., retention period expired or uplink data not forwarded, to the UE and may also include the uplink data not forwarded and may also include a back-off timer so that the UE can retry send the uplink data after the timer expires.

[0091] If the data forward priority for the UE or for the service or for the service of the UE is low and the uplink data cannot be forwarded right now, the network element may send an appropriate rejection cause, e.g., low priority cannot be treated now, to the UE and may also include the uplink data not forwarded and may also include a back-off timer so that the UE can retry to send the uplink data after the timer expires.

[0092] If the network element can proceed the uplink data with store and forward operation, the network element buffers the uplink data and may send an indication that the store and forward operation is applied to the UE. The network element may send the related parameters, e.g., data storage quota, retention period, data forward priority to the UE.

[0093] It should be understood that one or more features from the above / following implementation examples are not exclusive to the specific implementation examples, but can be combined in any manner (e.g., in any priority and / or order, concurrently or otherwise) .

[0103] While various embodiments of the present solution have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example only, and not by way of limitation. Likewise, the various diagrams may depict an example architectural or configuration, which are provided to enable persons of ordinary skill in the art to understand example features and functions of the present solution. Such persons would understand, however, that the solution is not restricted to the illustrated example architectures or configurations, but can be implemented using a variety of alternative architectures and configurations. Additionally, as would be understood by persons of ordinary skill in the art, one or more features of one embodiment can be combined with one or more features of another embodiment described herein. Thus, the breadth and scope of the present disclosure should not be limited by any of the above-described illustrative embodiments.

[0104] It is also understood that any reference to an element herein using a designation such as "first, " "second, " and so forth does not generally limit the quantity or order of those elements. Rather, these designations can be used herein as a convenient means of distinguishing between two or more elements or instances of an element. Thus, a reference to first and second elements does not mean that only two elements can be employed, or that the first element must precede the second element in some manner.

[0105] Additionally, a person having ordinary skill in the art would understand that information and signals can be represented using any of a variety of different technologies and techniques. For example, data, instructions, commands, information, signals, bits and symbols, for example, which may be referenced in the above description can be represented by voltages, currents, electromagnetic waves, magnetic fields or particles, optical fields or particles, or any combination thereof.

[0106] A person of ordinary skill in the art would further appreciate that any of the various illustrative logical blocks, modules, processors, means, circuits, methods and functions described in connection with the aspects disclosed herein can be implemented by electronic hardware (e.g., a digital implementation, an analog implementation, or a combination of the two) , firmware, various forms of program or design code incorporating instructions (which can be referred to herein, for convenience, as "software" or a "software module) , or any combination of these techniques. To clearly illustrate this interchangeability of hardware, firmware and software, various illustrative components, blocks, modules, circuits, and steps have been described above generally in terms of their functionality. Whether such functionality is implemented as hardware, firmware or software, or a combination of these techniques, depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system. Skilled artisans can implement the described functionality in various ways for each particular application, but such implementation decisions do not cause a departure from the scope of the present disclosure.

[0107] Furthermore, a person of ordinary skill in the art would understand that various illustrative logical blocks, modules, devices, components and circuits described herein can be implemented within or performed by an integrated circuit (IC) that can include a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an  application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, or any combination thereof. The logical blocks, modules, and circuits can further include antennas and / or transceivers to communicate with various components within the network or within the device. A general purpose processor can be a microprocessor, but in the alternative, the processor can be any conventional processor, controller, or state machine. A processor can also be implemented as a combination of computing devices, e.g., a combination of a DSP and a microprocessor, a plurality of microprocessors, one or more microprocessors in conjunction with a DSP core, or any other suitable configuration to perform the functions described herein.

[0108] If implemented in software, the functions can be stored as one or more instructions or code on a computer-readable medium. Thus, the steps of a method or algorithm disclosed herein can be implemented as software stored on a computer-readable medium. Computer-readable media includes both computer storage media and communication media including any medium that can be enabled to transfer a computer program or code from one place to another. A storage media can be any available media that can be accessed by a computer. By way of example, and not limitation, such computer-readable media can include RAM, ROM, EEPROM, CD-ROM or other optical disk storage, magnetic disk storage or other magnetic storage devices, or any other medium that can be used to store desired program code in the form of instructions or data structures and that can be accessed by a computer.

[0109] In this document, the term "module" as used herein, refers to software, firmware, hardware, and any combination of these elements for performing the associated functions described herein. Additionally, for purpose of discussion, the various modules are described as discrete modules; however, as would be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art, two or more modules may be combined to form a single module that performs the associated functions according embodiments of the present solution.

[0110] Additionally, memory or other storage, as well as communication components, may be employed in embodiments of the present solution. It will be appreciated that, for clarity purposes, the above description has described embodiments of the present solution with reference to different functional units and processors. However, it will be apparent that any suitable distribution of functionality between different functional units, processing logic elements or domains may be used without detracting from the present solution. For example, functionality illustrated to be performed by separate processing logic elements, or controllers, may be performed by the same processing logic element, or controller. Hence, references to specific functional units are only references to a suitable means for providing the described functionality, rather than indicative of a strict logical or physical structure or organization.

[0111] Various modifications to the embodiments described in this disclosure will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the general principles defined herein can be applied to other embodiments without departing from the scope of this disclosure. Thus, the disclosure is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown herein, but is to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the novel features and principles disclosed herein, as recited in the claims below.
