Description

METHOD AND USER EQUIPMENT FOR HANDLING NON-ACCESS STRATUM (NAS) MOBILITY MANAGEMENT (MM) CAUSECROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This Application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 550,680, filed on February 07, 2024, the entirety of which is incorporated by reference herein.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONField of the Invention

[0002] The present invention relates to mobile communication, and, in particular, it relates to a method and user equipment for handing non-access stratum (NAS) mobility management (MM) cause. Description of the Related Art

[0003] A specific cause is used to indicate user equipment (UE) that is not allowed to operate in the present location. For example, a UE is not allowed to attempt to access a public land mobile network (PLMN) via satellite access technology. The UE will start a timer to determine when the UE can access the network again when receiving the cause in SERVICE / REGISTRATION REJECT message or in DEREGISTRATION REQUEST message.

[0004] The cause should only be sent by a satellite cell. Compared to a terrestrial network, only the satellite cell needs to check the location of the UE, because the satellite may not be in a geosynchronous orbit. The UE will enter a deregistered state when receiving downlink (DL) NAS transport with a cause indicating the UE is not allowed to operate at the present location.

[0005] However, upon receiving the cause indicating that the UE is not allowed to operate at the present location, the handling of 5GMM and EMM parameters is unclear, and how to handle an abnormal case that the cause has not received from the satellite cell is unclear. BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] An embodiment of the present invention provides a method for handling a non-access stratum (NAS) mobility management (MM) cause. The method is applicable to user equipment (UE) . The method includes the following steps. A message from a network node, which is a node of a network, is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE. The last-visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) and the TAI list are deleted according to the message.

[0007] The method further includes the following step. The 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) and the 5G key set identifier (ngKSI) are deleted in response to the UE not registering or not having registered to the same PLMN over non-3GPP access.

[0008] The method further includes the following step. Any 4G globally unique temporary identifier (4G-GUTI) , the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the 4G key set identifier (eKSI) are deleted in response to the message being received via satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) access and the UE operating in single-registration mode.

[0009] The method further includes the following step. The network node of the network is registered using a subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) or a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI) next time.

[0010] The method further includes the following step. The network node of the network is registered using an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) . An EMM-DEREGISTERED state is entered.

[0011] According to the electronic device described above, the message is received from a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell.

[0012] According to the electronic device described above, the message is a downlink (DL) NAS transport message.

[0013] According to the electronic device described above, the specific cause includes an EPS mobility management or 5G NAS mobility management (EMM or 5GMM) cause #78, and wherein the network node includes a satellite.

[0014] An embodiment of the present invention provides a method for handling non-access stratum (NAS) mobility management (MM) cause. The method is applicable to user equipment (UE) . The method includes the following steps. A message from a network node is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE. The specific cause is considered as an abnormal case. The specific cause is ignored and discarded.

[0015] According to the method described above, the message is received from a non-satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell.

[0016] According to the method described above, the step of ignoring or discarding the specific cause include the following step. The specific cause is ignored or discarded by handling a 5G session management (5GSM) message in a payload container IE and a protocol data unit (PDU) session ID in 5GSM procedures.

[0017] According to the method described above, the abnormal case includes that the UE passes to a 5G session management (5GSM) sublayer an indication that a 5GSM message was not forwarded due to unexpected cause.

[0018] An embodiment of the present invention provides a user equipment (UE) . The UE is for handling non-access stratum (NAS) mobility management (MM) cause. The UE includes a transceiver and a processor. The transceiver communicates with a network node. The processor is communicatively coupled to the transceiver. The processor receives a message from the network node of the network and deletes the last-visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) and TAI list according to the message, or it considers the specific cause is an abnormal case and ignores or discards the specific cause. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE.

[0019] According to the UE described above, the processor deletes the 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) and the 5G key set identifier (ngKSI) if the UE is not registering or has not registered to the same PLMN over non-3GPP access.

[0020] According to the UE described above, the processor deletes any 4G globally unique temporary identifier (4G-GUTI) , the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and 4G key set identifier (eKSI) if the message was received via satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) access and the UE is operating in single-registration mode.

[0021] According to the UE described above, the processor ignores or discards the specific cause by handling a 5G session management (5GSM) message in a payload container IE and a protocol data unit (PDU) session ID in 5GSM procedures.

[0022] According to the UE described above, the abnormal case includes that the UE passes to a 5G session management (5GSM) sublayer an indication that a 5GSM message was not forwarded due to unexpected cause.

[0023] According to the UE described above, the message is received from a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell.

[0032] In order to make the above purposes, features, and advantages of some embodiments of the present invention more comprehensible, the following is a detailed description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.

[0033] Certain terms are used throughout the description and following claims to refer to particular components. As one skilled in the art will understand, electronic equipment manufacturers may refer to a component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ in name but not function. It is understood that the words “comprise” , “have” and “include” are used in an open-ended fashion, and thus should be interpreted to mean “include, but not limited to... ” . Thus, when the terms “comprise” , “have” or “include” used in the present invention are used to indicate the existence of specific technical features, values, method steps, operations, units or components. However, it does not exclude the possibility that more technical features, numerical values, method steps, work processes, units, components, or any combination of the above can be added.

[0034] The directional terms used throughout the description and following claims, such as: “on” , “up” , “above” , “down” , “below” , “front” , “rear” , “back” , “left” , “right” , etc., are only directions referring to the drawings. Therefore, the directional terms are used for explaining and not used for limiting the present invention. Regarding the drawings, the drawings show the general characteristics of methods, structures, or materials used in specific embodiments. However, the drawings should not be construed as defining or limiting the scope or properties encompassed by these embodiments. For example, for clarity, the relative size, thickness, and position of each layer, each area, or each structure may be reduced or enlarged.

[0035] When the corresponding component such as layer or area is referred to as being “on another component” , it may be directly on this other component, or other components may exist between them. On the other hand, when the component is referred to as being “directly on another component (or the variant thereof) ” , there is no component between them. Furthermore, when the corresponding component is referred to as being “on another component” , the corresponding component and the other component have a disposition relationship along a top-view / vertical direction, the corresponding component may be below or above the other component, and the disposition relationship along the top-view / vertical direction is determined by the orientation of the device.

[0036] It should be understood that when a component or layer is referred to as being “connected to” another component or layer, it can be directly connected to this other component or layer, or intervening components or layers may be present. In contrast, when a component is referred to as being “directly connected to” another component or layer, there are no intervening components or layers present.

[0037] The electrical connection or coupling described in this disclosure may refer to direct connection or indirect connection. In the case of direct connection, the endpoints of the components on the two circuits are directly connected or connected to each other by a conductor line segment, while in the case of indirect connection, there are switches, diodes, capacitors, inductors, resistors, other suitable components, or a combination of the above components between the endpoints of the components on the two circuits, but the intermediate component is not limited thereto.

[0038] The words “first” , “second” , and “third” are used to describe components. They are not used to indicate the priority order of or advance relationship, but only to distinguish components with the same name.

[0039] It should be noted that the technical features in different embodiments described in the following can be replaced, recombined, or mixed with one another to constitute another embodiment without depart in from the spirit of the present invention.

[0040] FIG. 1 shows a flow chart of a method for handling non-access stratum (NAS) mobility management (MM) cause in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The method for handling NAS MM cause is applied to user equipment (UE) . In some embodiments, the UE may be, for example, a laptop, a tablet, a smart phone, or a smart watch, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In some embodiments, although illustrated as discrete blocks, various blocks of steps S100 and S102 may be divided into additional blocks, combined into fewer blocks, or eliminated, depending on the desired implementation. Moreover, the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100 and S102 may be executed in the order shown in FIG. 1 or, alternatively in a different order. Furthermore, one or more of the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100 and S102 may be executed iteratively. Solely for illustrative purposes and without limiting the scope.

[0041] As shown in FIG. 1, the method for handling NAS MM cause of the present invention includes the following steps. A message from a network node is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE (step S100) . The last-visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) and the TAI list are deleted according to the message (step S102) .

[0042] In some embodiments, the message received in step S100 is received from a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell. In some embodiments, the message is a downlink (DL) NAS transport message. In some embodiments, the specific cause in step S100 includes an EPS mobility management or 5G NAS mobility management (EMM or 5GMM) cause #78. The network node includes a satellite. In some embodiments, the network node may be an eNB in an LTE, LTE-Advanced or LTE-Advanced Pro network or in a gNB, a satellite, a repeater or TRP in a 5G network, an NR network or an IoT network, but the present invention is not limited thereto.

[0043] In some embodiments, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may execute other steps instead of step S102. For example, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may set a 5GS system update status to 5U3 ROAMING NOT ALLOWED, and store the 5GS system update status. For example, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may reset a registration attempt counter. For example, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may store a PLMN identity. If the PLMN identity is known, the current geographical location in the list of “PLMNs not allowed to operate at the present UE location” and the UE starts a corresponding timer instance. For example, after the after the step S100 is executed, the UE may enter a state of (5G) MM-DEREGISTERED (. PLMN-SEARCH) and perform a PLMN selection.

[0044] FIG. 2 shows a flow chart of a method for handling NAS MM cause in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The method for handling NAS MM cause is applied to the UE. In some embodiments, the UE may be, for example, a laptop, a tablet, a smart phone, or a smart watch, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In some embodiments, although illustrated as discrete blocks, various blocks of steps S100, S200 and S202 may be divided into additional blocks, combined into fewer blocks, or eliminated, depending on the desired implementation. Moreover, the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S200 and S202 may be executed in the order shown in FIG. 1 or, alternatively in a different order. Furthermore, one or more of the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S200 and S202 may be executed iteratively. Solely for illustrative purposes and without limiting the scope.

[0045] As shown in FIG. 2, the method for handling NAS MM cause of the present invention includes the following steps. A message from a network node is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE (step S100) . The 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) and the 5G key set identifier (ngKSI) are deleted in response to the UE not registering or not having registered to the same PLMN over non-3GPP access (step S200) . The UE registers to the network node of the network using a subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) or a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI) next time (step S202) .

[0046] In some embodiments, the message received in step S100 is received from a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell.

[0047] In step S200, since the 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) and the 5G key set identifier (ngKSI) are deleted, the UE is able to use the subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) or the subscription concealed identifier (SUCI) to register to the network node of the network next time in step S202. In contrast, if step S200 is not executed, the UE may keep the 5G-GUTI and ngKSI during the last-visited connection. When the UE registers to the network node of the network next time, the network cannot identify the 5G-GUTI and ngKSI kept by the UE. Therefore, the network may request the UE for the SUPI or SUCI again. With the present invention being applied, the UE directly use the SUPI or SUCI to register to the network node of the network without being requested by the network, thus saving the transmission bandwidth.

[0048] FIG. 3 shows a flow chart of a method for handling NAS MM cause in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The method for handling NAS MM cause is applied to the UE. In some embodiments, the UE may be, for example, a laptop, a tablet, a smart phone, or a smart watch, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In some embodiments, although illustrated as discrete blocks, various blocks of steps S100, S300 and S302 may be divided into additional blocks, combined into fewer blocks, or eliminated, depending on the desired implementation. Moreover, the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S300 and S302 may be executed in the order shown in FIG. 1 or, alternatively in a different order. Furthermore, one or more of the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S300 and S302 may be executed iteratively. Solely for illustrative purposes and without limiting the scope.

[0049] As shown in FIG. 3, the method for handling NAS MM cause of the present invention includes the following steps. A message from a network node is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE (step S100) . Any 4G globally unique temporary identifier (4G-GUTI) , the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the 4G key set identifier (eKSI) are deleted in response to the message being received via satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) access and the UE operating in single-registration mode (step S300) . The UE registers to the network node of the network using an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) (step S302) .

[0050] In some embodiments, the message received in step S100 is received from a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell.

[0051] In step S300, since Any 4G globally unique temporary identifier (4G-GUTI) , the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the 4G key set identifier (eKSI) are deleted, the UE is able to use the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) to register to the network node of the network next time in step S302. In contrast, if step S300 is not executed, the UE may keep the 4G-GUTI, the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the eKSI during the last-visited connection. When the UE registers to the network node of the network next time, the network cannot identify the 4G-GUTI, the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the eKSI kept by the UE. Therefore, the network may request the UE for the IMSI again. With the present invention being applied, the UE directly use the IMSI to register to the network node of the network without being requested by the network, thus saving the transmission bandwidth.

[0052] In some embodiments, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may execute other steps instead of step S300. For example, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may set an EPS update status to EU3 ROAMING NOT ALLOWED, and store the EPS update status. For example, after the step S100 is executed, the UE may reset the registration attempt counter. In some embodiments, the UE may enter an EMM-DEREGISTERED state after steps S100 and S300 are executed.

[0053] FIG. 4 shows a flow chart of a method for handling NAS MM cause in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The method for handling NAS MM cause is applied to the UE. In some embodiments, the UE may be, for example, a laptop, a tablet, a smart phone, or a smart watch, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In some embodiments, although illustrated as discrete blocks, various blocks of steps S100, S400 and S402 may be divided into additional blocks, combined into fewer blocks, or eliminated, depending on the desired implementation. Moreover, the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S400 and S402 may be executed in the order shown in FIG. 1 or, alternatively in a different order. Furthermore, one or more of the blocks / sub-blocks of steps S100, S400 and S402 may be executed iteratively. Solely for illustrative purposes and without limiting the scope.

[0054] As shown in FIG. 4, the method for handling NAS MM cause of the present invention includes the following steps. A message from a network node is received. The message includes a specific cause indicating that a public land mobile network (PLMN) is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE (step S100) . The UE considers the specific cause as an abnormal case (step S400) . The UE ignores or discards the specific cause (step S402) .

[0055] In some embodiments, the message received in step S100 is received from a non-satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) cell. In some embodiments, the message is a downlink (DL) NAS transport message. In some embodiments, the specific cause in step S100 includes an EPS mobility management or 5G NAS mobility management (EMM or 5GMM) cause #78. In some embodiments, the network node may be an eNB in an LTE, LTE-Advanced or LTE-Advanced Pro network or in a gNB, a satellite, a repeater or TRP in a 5G network, an NR network or an IoT network, but the present invention is not limited thereto.

[0056] In some embodiments of step S400, the abnormal case includes that the UE passes to a 5G session management (5GSM) sublayer an indication that a 5GSM message was not forwarded due to unexpected cause.

[0057] In some embodiments of step S402, the step of ignoring or discarding the specific cause includes the following step. The UE ignores or discards the specific cause by handling a 5G session management (5GSM) message in a payload container IE and a protocol data unit (PDU) session ID in 5GSM procedures.

[0058] FIG. 5 shows a schematic diagram of a network system 500 in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 5, the network system 500 includes a UE 510, a radio access network (RAN) 520 and a core network 530. In the UE 510, a protocol stack is introduced with multiple layers, such as a NAS layer that is a configured to communicate with the core network 530 of the network system 500, a radio resource control (RRC) layer that is configured for higher layer configuration and control, a packet data convergence protocol / radio link control (PDCP / RLC) layer, a media access control (MAC) layer and a Physical (PHY) layer.

[0059] In some embodiments, if the network system 500 is a 5GS, the core network 530 may include multiple NFs, such as AMF, SMF, SMSF, LMF, UPF and / or other NF. Specifically, the AMF can manage access control and mobility, and support other NFs to communicate with the UE 510 and the RAN 520. The SMF can provide session management, IP address allocation and management, UP function selection and control. The SMSF can manage the SMS subscription and delivery over the NAS layer. The LMF can support location measurement and determination for the UE 510, UL location measurement from the RAN 520. Each of the NFs can interact with others by using a reference point / interface, such as N1, N2, N3, N4, N6 and N11. In another example, if the network system 500 is an EPS, the core network 530 may include multiple entities, such as MME, S-GW, P-GW, HSS and PCRF. Specifically, the MME can provide mobility and session management (including bearer management as well as connection management) to the UE. The S-GW can be responsible for exchanging traffic between the P-GW and the RAN, and the P-GW can be responsible for data traffic between the S-GW and other networks (e.g., IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) or Internet) . The HSS can store data for customer profile, create authentication vectors to be sent to the MME and hold information about PDNs to be connected as well as information identifying the MME. The PCRF can provide information of quality of service (QoS) to the P-GW to control charging rules, flow control rules and traffic priority. Each of the above entities can interact with other through different interfaces, such as S1-U, S1-MME, S11, S6a, S5, Gx, Gxc, and SGi.

[0060] Furthermore, the RAN 520 and the core network 530 may be part of a PLMN that is a network established and operated by an administration or ROA for the specific purpose of providing land mobile communication services to the public in one or a combination of frequency bands. Specifically, once the UE 510 is switched on, the UE 510 can perform a network (PLMN) selection to select a PLMN that it will register with and a cell selection to select a cell (and / or a network node) that belongs to the selected PLMN. After confirming the PLMN and the corresponding cell, the UE 510 can initiate a NAS MM procedure to the core network 530 via the RAN 520, which may include at least one base station (BS) 521 (e.g., an evolved NodeB (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB (gNB) , or a transmission and reception point (TRP) ) and at least one satellite 522, and then interact with the above NFs / entities for data communication.

[0061] Based on non-terrestrial network (NTN) communication, since a satellite (cell) may be configured to serve a few UEs with national and secure concerns, the UE 510 may receive, during a NAS MM procedure, a specific cause that is used to indicate that a PLMN is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE. In other words, the UE 510 may be restricted from accessing a current PLMN via a satellite (cell) even though only this satellite may be available at the present location of the UE. In some embodiments, the UE 510 may receive a message from a network node (or the core network 530) of a network (e.g., network system 500) . The message may include a specific cause indicating that the PLMN is not allowed to operate at the present location of the UE and the network node may be a satellite (cell) . Specifically, the message may include a downlink (DL) NAS transport message. The specific cause may include an EMM or 5GMM cause #78 that means “PLMN not allowed to operate at the present UE location” , or another cause value having a similar meaning of not being allowed to operate.

[0062] In some embodiments, after receiving the message with the specific cause from the network node of the network, the UE 510 may delete the last-visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) and the TAI list according to the message.

[0063] In some embodiments, after receiving the message with the specific cause from the network node of the network, if the UE 510 is not registering or has not registered to the same PLMN over non-3GPP access, the UE 510 may delete the 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) and the 5G key set identifier (ngKSI) . The UE 510 may register to the network node of the network using a subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) or a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI) next time.

[0064] In some embodiments, after receiving the message with the specific cause from the network node of the network, if the message was received via satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) access and the UE 510 is operating in single-registration mode, the UE 510 deletes any 4G globally unique temporary identifier (4G-GUTI) , the last-visited registered TAI, the TAI list, and the 4G key set identifier (eKSI) . The UE 510 may register to the network node of the network using a subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) or a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI) next time.

[0065] In some embodiments, after receiving the message with the specific cause from the network node of the network, the UE 510 may consider the specific cause as an abnormal case, and the UE 510 may ignore or discard the specific cause. The UE 510 ignores or discarding the specific cause by handling a 5G session management (5GSM) message in a payload container IE and a protocol data unit (PDU) session ID in 5GSM procedures. In some embodiments, the abnormal case is that the UE passes to a 5G session management (5GSM) sublayer an indication that a 5GSM message was not forwarded due to unexpected cause.

[0066] FIG. 6 shows a schematic diagram of a communication system 600 having at least a communication apparatus 610 and a network apparatus 620 in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. Each of apparatus 610 and apparatus 620 may perform various functions to implement schemes, techniques, processes and methods described herein pertaining to handling NAS MM cause for NTN access, including the various schemes described above with respect to various proposed designs, concepts, schemes, systems and methods described above, including network system 500, as well as processes described below.
