Description

SEGMENTED NORMALIZATION METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR VIBRATION SIGNALS AND METHOD FOR MONITORING TRAFFICSCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims priority to, and the benefit of, US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 568,678 filed on March 22, 2024, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present application relates to method and system for processing signals, and in particular, to a segmented normalization method and segmented normalization system for vibration signals and a method for monitoring traffics.BACKGROUND

[0003] In recent years, developing the sensing capabilities of deployed fiber networks has attracted a lot of research attention because it is a cost-effective way to realize various physical environment and human activity monitoring, the Internet of Things for smart city applications, and dramatically increase the value of deployed fiber links. Distributed optical fiber acoustic sensor (DOFAS) is an appealing tool due to its advantages of seamless distributed sensing, high spatial and temporal sampling, and resistance to harsh environments. DOFAS uses optical fiber as a sensor for sound vibration sensing. The system uses a single optical fiber to simultaneously monitor sound vibration and transmit signals. The DOFAS system uses the phase of coherent backscattered Rayleigh light rather than light intensity to detect signals, such as sound vibration in the audio range. It can not only use the phase amplitude to provide information about the intensity of sound vibration events, but also use linear quantitative measurements to obtain phase and frequency information.

[0004] However, the nature of weak signal amplitude makes it prone to environmental noise. The limited signal-to-noise ratio hinders the application of DOFAS in detecting weak vibrations such as light vehicles or other social activities in dense metropolitan areas. FIG. 1 shows typical vehicle vibration traces obtained before normalization. The vehicle vibration traces are detected from DOFAS that monitor vibrations from the fibers that pass through the cross-harbor tunnel and railway traffic across the Victoria Harbor in downtown Hong Kong. The fibers used belong to a fiber bundle that has a tube diameter around 24 mm with over 100 fibers, and the total length of the fiber bundle is 20 km. The vehicle vibration traces can hardly be seen from the data without normalization process. In DOFAS signal processing, normalization is often used to enhance the quality and interpretability of the acquired signal. The raw vibration data is normalized to account for variation in external conditions (such as strain) at different locations along the fiber and at different points in time. Typically, basic normalization is performed on the full vibration dataset, which means large signals scale down relatively weak signals (such as from light vehicles) due to the highest intensity of the strongest signal values. FIG. 2 shows the vehicle vibration traces which have been handled by the basic normalization process. Basic normalization includes the following steps: normalizing the signals of each spatial position along the time axes, and then normalizing the signal of each time point across positions and placing the data of each spatial position at the center by subtracting the corresponding average value (DC component) to obtain basic normalized data. The overall normalization presents obvious deficiencies because the weak vibration signals will be buried as long as a strong vibration signal exists.SUMMARY

[0005] The present application intends to strengthen weak vibration signals and to make these weak vibration signals visible. In order to extract meaningful information from noisy sensor data, the present application proposes a segmented normalization algorithm to enhance weaker vibration signals, so that more vibration signal patterns can be detected.

[0006] The present disclosure provides a segmented normalization method for vibration signals, comprising: extracting a set of vibration signals; dividing the set of vibration signals into multiple signal segments along a time axis and / or a spatial  axis, wherein each signal segment of the multiple signal segments comprises multiple rows and multiple columns of signals; for each signal segment of the multiple signal segments: obtaining a maximum signal value and a minimum signal value in each row of signals in the  individual signal segment; performing intermediate normalization processing on the vibration signals in each row of  signals according to the maximum signal value and the minimum signal value to obtain intermediate normalized signal values of the vibration signals; obtaining a maximum normalized signal value and a minimum normalized signal value in  each column of signals; and performing normalization processing on the intermediate normalized signal values of the  vibration signals in each column of signals according to the maximum normalized signal value and the minimum normalized signal value to obtain final normalized signal values of the vibration signals.

[0027] The present disclosure intends to provide a segmented normalization method for signals. The method comprises: extracting a set of vibration signals; dividing the set of vibration signals into multiple signal segments; obtaining a maximum signal value and a minimum signal value of each row (or each column) of each signal segment of the multiple signal segments; performing intermediate normalization processing on the vibration signals in each row (or each column) of signals of each signal segment of the multiple signal segments according to the maximum signal value and the minimum signal value to obtain intermediate normalized signals of the vibration signals; obtaining a maximum normalized signal value and a minimum normalized signal value of each column (or each row) of signals of each signal segment of the multiple signal segments; performing normalization processing on the intermediate normalized signal values of the vibration signals in each column (or each row) of each signal segment of the multiple signal segments according to the maximum normalized signal value and the minimum normalized signal value to obtain final normalized signals. In the above steps, the vibration signals are subjected to the normalization process along two different directions, that is at first in row direction and then in column direction in the signal segment, or vice versa. Then, optionally, the number of the final normalized signal values greater than a threshold is counted, or is displayed, for estimating the number of objects, such as lightweight and / or heavy weight vehicles, passing through. The object includes vehicles, trains or any vibration sources moving along the fiber.

[0028] According to certain embodiments of the present disclosure, a segmented normalization method for normalizing the segmented signals of an optic fiber sensing system (or DOFAS) is disclosed hereinafter. FIG. 3 illustrates a flow chart of a segmented normalization method according to certain embodiments of the present disclosure. The method includes the following steps.

[0029] In step 301, a set of vibration signals with spatio-temporal vibration data is extracted from the optic fiber sensing system. The set of vibration signals can be extracted within a time period and a certain location area. In a certain embodiment, the set of vibration signals are captured by monitoring vibrations from the DOFAS deployed in a downtown area in Hong Kong.

[0030] Then in step 303, the set of vibration signals is divided into multiple signal segments along a time axis and / or spatial axis. In one example, the set of signals can be divided into N segments in the direction of the time axis, thereby obtaining N signal segments. N is the positive integer greater than or equal to 2. In one example, the N signal segments can be divided along the time axis only, so as to obtain N signal segments with different lengths of time periods and same size of location area. In a further example, the N signal segments can be divided along the spatial axis only, so as to obtain N signal segments with different sizes of location areas and same length of time period. In another example, the N signal segments can be divided along the time axis and the spatial axis, so as to obtain N signal segments with different sizes of location areas and different lengths of time periods. Among them, the signals in the N signal segments can have different time lengths or the same time length, or have different position area lengths or the same position area length. Alternatively, the set of vibration signals can be adaptively divided into multiple signal segments signals based on the detected vibration events.

[0031] Then, each signal segment of the N segmented signals is normalized twice for obtaining the final normalized signal value. In one example, the signals of each signal segment are normalized using a minimum signal value and a maximum signal value in the signal segment. In step 305, for each row of signal in each signal segment of the multiple signal segments, a maximum signal value and a minimum signal value of each row of signals are obtained. The row and the column refer to two directions in the signal segment, and the row of signals and the column of signals refer to the signals extracted along the two directions in the signal segment respectively. The row and the column are relative to each other and can be used interchangeably. The process of getting the maximum signal value and the minimum signal value is repeated for each row of signals.

[0032] In step 307, an intermediate normalization processing is performed on the vibration signals in each row of signals in each signal segment of the multiple signal segments according to the maximum signal value and the minimum signal value, to obtain the intermediate normalized signal values of the vibration signals. The normalized signal value for one signal in the row of signal segment can be obtained as follows. Xnorm represents the intermediate normalized signal value of one vibration signal after  normalization, X represents the initial value of the vibration signal, Xmin represents the minimum value of the vibration signals in the row of signal segment, and Xmax represents the maximum signal value of the vibration signals in the row of signal segment.

[0033] After processing the intermediate normalization to each row of signals in the signal segment and then all signal segments of the set of vibration signals, each vibration signal is normalized and has its own intermediate normalized signal value. The above process is repeated for all of the vibration signals of the signal segment and are ready for the further process.

[0034] Then in step 309, for each column of signals in each signal segment, a maximum normalized signal value and a minimum normalized signal value of each column of signals can be obtained based on the intermediate normalized signal values of the vibration signals in all signal segments obtained in the previous steps. In one example, the maximum normalized signal value can be achieved by comparing all the intermediate normalized signal values in the columns of signals in the signal segment and extracting the maximum value. Similarly, the minimum normalized signal value can be achieved by comparing all the intermediate normalized signal values in the columns of signals in the signal segment and extracting the minimum value.

[0035] In step 311, a final normalization processing is performed on the intermediate normalized signal values of the vibration signals in each column of each signal segment according to the maximum normalized signal value and the minimum normalized signal value of each column to obtain final normalized signal values. The final normalized signal value for one signal in the column of signals in a signal segment can be obtained as following formula (2) . wherein Ynorm represents the final normalized signal value of the signal, Y represents the  intermediate normalized signal value of the signal, Ymin represents the minimum normalized signal value in the column of signals, and Ymax represents the maximum normalized signal value in the column of signals.

[0036] After processing the above final normalization to each column of signals in the signal segment and then all signal segments of the set of vibration signals, each vibration signal is eventually normalized and converted to a final normalized signal value. The above process is repeated for all of the vibration signals of the signal segment.

[0037] Preferably, the number of the final normalized signal values greater than a threshold can be counted for estimating the number of objects passing through. In one example, the threshold can be a pre-determined threshold based on the actual requirement on the detection of vehicles. In another example, if the final normalized signal value of a signal is greater of than the threshold, such signal value can be displayed on the screen, and further processed for determine the vehicle type, such as a heavyweight vehicle or a lightweight vehicle or even a motorcycle.

[0038] FIG. 4 shows a vehicle vibration trace formed by segmented normalization according to a certain embodiment of the present disclosure. As per FIG. 4, the vibration signals have been separated into 6 segments along the time axis, with the same time length for each signal segment. Then the vibration signals subject to normalize in time axis and spatial axis respectively. After the normalization process, the number of the final normalized signal values greater than a threshold is counted for estimating the number of vehicles passing through. The vehicle vibration trace shows the counting result, indicating a vehicle passing through the point, and be used for monitoring the traffic passing through.

[0039] FIG. 5 shows the vehicle vibration trace without signal segment and that formed by segmented normalization according to certain embodiment of the present disclosure. Specifically, FIG. 5 depicts (A) vehicle vibration trace without segment of signals, (B) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 4 segments of signals (N = 4) , (C) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 8 segments of signals (N = 8) ; and (D) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 16 segments of signals (N = 16) . Specifically, in the above embodiments shown in (B) , (C) and (D) of FIG. 5, the signals are segmented along the time axis.

[0040] It thus can be seen that the basic normalization suppresses the weak vibration signals because the maximum value generated by strong vibration traces is larger than that generated by weak vibration signals. Compared with basic normalization, the segmented normalization method according to the certain embodiment of the present disclosure amplifies the weak signals existing in some signal segments by dividing the signal into N signal segments along the time axis.

[0041] It can be seen from FIG. 5 that more vehicle traces can be detected, and thus the lighter vehicles, such as the vehicle producing weaker vibrations, can be detected. In addition, as the number of segments used increases, more traces are detected.

[0042] In another embodiment, it is also possible to use methods other than minimum-maximum scaling for normalizing the signal segment. In one example, the mean and standard deviation can be applied for normalization.

[0043] According to certain embodiments of the present disclosure, the set of signals, such as vibration signals with spatio-temporal vibration data, from the optical fiber sensing system is divided into N signal segments along both of the direction of the spatial axis, thereby obtaining multiple signal segments, such as N signal segments. N is the positive integer greater than or equal to 2. Each segment of the signal is subjected to normalization separately. Among them, the N signal segments of spatial segmented signals can be formed by separating the set of signals at different positions with the same size of location areas, or the N signal segments of spatial segmented signals can be formed by separating the set of signals at different sizes of location areas, or the signal segments can be based on adaptive segmentation of detected event, such as vibration events.

[0044] According to a further embodiment of the present disclosure, the vibration signals with spatio-temporal vibration data from the optical fiber sensing system is divided into multiple signal segments along the directions of the time axis and the spatial axis, thereby obtaining multiple signal segments In one embodiment, the vibration signals of the optical fiber sensing system is divided into N segments along the directions of the time axis and the spatial axis, thereby obtaining N time-space segmented signals in a rectangular segmentation manner, as shown in FIG. 6. Then, each segment of the signals is subjected to normalization operation respectively. Specifically, the signals of each of the multiple signal segments are normalized to signal rows along the spatial axis first and then to signal columns along the time axis, by using the minimum values and maximum values, such as the minimum and maximum signal amplitudes, so as to obtain an intermediate normalized signal value and then a final normalized signal value for each signal, such as by using the above normalization method.

[0045] The vehicle vibration traces of FIG. 6 are formed by normalizing all signals of a set of data as a whole, segmenting all signals of a set of data along a spatial axis and normalizing the resulted signal segments respectively, and segmenting all signals of a set of data along both of time axis and spatial axis and normalizing the resulted signal segments respectively. Specifically, FIG. 6 depicts (A) vehicle vibration trace without segment of signals, (B) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 4 segments of signals along spatial axis but is not divided along time axis, (C) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 8 segments of signals along spatial axis but is not divided along time axis; and (D) vehicle vibration trace in which the set of signals is divided into 8 segments along spatial axis and 8 segments along time axis, that is, a total of 64 signal segments.

[0046] In one embodiment, the vibration signal from the DOFAS is segmented in an adaptive segmentation manner, such as automatically segmenting data according to detected events, thereby obtaining N signal segments. Then, each signal segment of the signals is subjected to normalization operation respectively. The adaptive segmentation does not require any parameter adjustment by the user. The number of the signal segment and the threshold arranged in the segmented normalization method for vibration signals may depend on, e.g. the actual requirement or the real-time traffic throughput or oil flow rate.
