[0002] Technical Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates to an ostomy coupling, in particular to an ostomy base plate for attaching an ostomy pouch to an ostomate.

[0004] Background to the Invention

[0005] When using an ostomy appliance, it is paramount that the ostomy appliance is securely attached to the user’s body around the stoma in a manner that it can efficiently receive and collect stomal output. It is particularly important that leaks of liquid and / or gas are prevented / minimised as nay leaking can cause discomfort or injury, such as skin damage around the stoma, and presents a hygienic risk to the user as well as potential embarrassment and inconvenience.

[0006] Typically, an ostomy appliance comprises a pouch in fluid communication with the stoma via a hydrocolloid adhesive component, sometimes referred to as a flange that attaches the ostomy appliance to the skin of the user around the stoma. Conventionally, the hydrocolloid adhesive flange is attached to the pouch directly via an adhesive or weld, such as a heat weld or ultra-sonic weld; this is known in the art as a “one-piece pouch”.

[0007] In an alternative to the “one-piece pouch”, two-piece pouches are known, which are made up of a pouch and a separate baseplate to which the pouch is connectable. In a known arrangement, such as the Natura (RTM) Stomahesive (RTM) square flange with flexible collar, available from ConvaTec Limited of Deeside, UK, the baseplate includes the hydrocolloid adhesive component which attaches to the skin around the stoma and a coupling ring to allow the baseplate to be attached and detached from a pouch (the pouch having a corresponding coupling ring, which snap-fits to the ring on the baseplate). As indicated in the name, the Natura (RTM) Stomahesive (RTM) square flange with flexible collar also includes a flexible collar, this collar is a ring of flexible non-woven material, with a square outer periphery, which surrounds the hydrocolloid component and is provided with an adhesive to improve the attachment between the baseplate and the skin of the ostomate. In certain circumstances, it is beneficial to control the shape of the hydrocolloid adhesive component to enhance transport of stomal output into the pouch and provide a better seal between the user and the ostomy appliance. To achieve ths, a shaped-disc that is more rigid than the hydrocolloid adhesive component is attached to the hydrocolloid adhesive; for example a convex disc may be provided for users with a recessed stoma (known in the art as a “convex baseplate”).

[0008] Removal of the adhesive component (and flexible collar where present) from the skin of the user to replace the baseplate may be uncomfortable, for this reason, and to reduce waste, it is therefore desirable to reduce the frequency at which the baseplate is replaced.

[0009] It is an object of embodiments of the present invention to at least partially overcome or alleviate the above problems and / or to provide an improved or alternative ostomy appliance.

[0010] Summary of the Invention

[0011] According to a broad aspect of the invention there is provided an ostomy baseplate. The ostomy baseplate may be for coupling an ostomy pouch to an ostomate. The baseplate may comprise a coupling component. The coupling component may be for coupling the baseplate to a corresponding coupling component. The corresponding coupling component may be a coupling component of an ostomy pouch. The baseplate may comprise an adhesive component. The adhesive component may be for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the stomate. The adhesive component may be for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen around the stoma. The ostomy baseplate may further comprise a collar. The collar may be formed of a woven material.

[0012] In a preferred aspect of the invention there is provided an ostomy baseplate for coupling an ostomy pouch to an ostomate, the baseplate comprising an adhesive component for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the ostomate around a stoma; wherein the ostomy baseplate further comprises a collar formed of woven material.

[0013] Advantageously, the provision of a collar in the form of a woven material (rather than a non-woven) reduces pilling, i.e. reduces the occurrence of pills. This is because woven material is made from interlocking yarns whereas non-woven is short fibres. This reduction in the degradation in appearance of the baseplate (through lack of pilling) increases the likelihood that the baseplate will be used for longer periods of time, because the reduced formation of pills (i.e. small balls of fibre on the surface of the non-woven collar) will lead to the user perceiving that the baseplate is less degraded than a corresponding baseplate with a non-woven collar. This in turn reduces the likelihood that the baseplate is replaced whilst it is still functional, reducing waste and the discomfort which may occur during replacement.

[0064] With reference to Figures 1 and 2, an ostomy baseplate 10 according to the present invention is described. The ostomy baseplate 10 comprises a shaped-disc in the form of a rigid convex disc 11. The disc 11 of this embodiment is generally annular in shape with a moulded part formed of an upper disc 12 and a lower disc 13 extending from a convex rim 16.

A lower surface of the collar is provided with an adhesive coating 24, in this embodiment this adhesive coating 24 comprises an acrylic adhesive with a thickness of approximately 0.5 mm. In other embodiments, alternative adhesives may be used, for example hydrocolloid adhesives. The lower surface of the collar 22 is further provided with a collar release liner 25 which is releasably adhered to the adhesive coating 24.

[0073] With reference to Figure 2, the ostomy pouch comprises a front (with respect to the user) facing wall 102 and a rear facing wall 103, which are joined about their periphery to form a cavity for storing stomal output. The rear facing wall 103 is provided with an opening 104 for providing communication between the stoma and the cavity. The corresponding coupling feature 101 surrounds the opening 104. In some embodiments the front facing wall 102 is provided with a layer of woven comfort material 105. The woven comfort material 105 improves the aesthetics of the pouch 100 so that it appears more like a garment than a medical device. In some embodiments another layer of woven comfort material 106 is provided on the rear facing wall, so as to provide a more comfortable surface against the skin. Preferably the woven comfort material 105, 106 is formed of the same material as the woven material of the collar 22, more preferably, also the same colour so as to make the whole system as inconspicuous as possible. In some embodiments the woven comfort material 105, 106 is provided with a further coating, such as EVA which aids in the bonding of the comfort material 105 to the remainder of the pouch 101.

Claims

CLAIMS1. An ostomy baseplate for coupling an ostomy pouch to an ostomate; the baseplate comprising a coupling component for coupling the baseplate to a corresponding coupling component of an ostomy pouch and an adhesive component for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the ostomate around a stoma; wherein the ostomy baseplate further comprises a collar formed of woven material.

2. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 1 wherein the adhesive component for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the ostomate around a stoma is a mouldable adhesive component to be mounded around the stoma.

3. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 2 comprising a further adhesive arranged radially outward of the adhesive component for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the ostomate around a stoma, wherein the further adhesive is provided on the collar formed of woven material and does not overlap with the adhesive component.

4. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 3 wherein the further adhesive is an acrylic adhesive.

5. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the coupling component is a mechanical coupling component.

6. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 1 to 4 wherein the coupling component is an adhesive coupling component.

7. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 6 wherein the coupling component comprises an adhesive landing region for adhesion to a corresponding adhesive region of an ostomy pouch.

8. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the woven material comprises cotton, polyester, polypropylene, or a mixture of cotton, polyester or polypropylene.

9. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the woven material comprises a mixture of cotton and polyester yams.

10. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the baseplate comprises a rigid convex disc.

11. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the woven material is ring-shaped and has an ovular outer circumference.

12. An ostomy baseplate according to claim 11 wherein the ovular outer circumference is shaped to match the shape of a corresponding ostomy pouch.

13. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the woven collar has a water-resistant coating.

14. An ostomy baseplate according to any preceding claim wherein the baseplate comprises two discs stacked upon one another and a gap is provided between the two discs.

15. An ostomy system comprising an ostomy pouch and the ostomy baseplate of any preceding claim, the ostomy pouch comprising a coupling component corresponding to the coupling component of the baseplate.

16. An ostomy system according to claim 15 wherein the ostomy pouch comprises a woven comfort material.

17. An ostomy system according to claim 16 wherein the woven comfort material of the pouch is formed from the same woven material as the woven material of the collar.

18. An ostomy system according to any of claims 14 to 18 wherein the woven comfort material of the ostomy pouch is the same colour as the woven material of the baseplate.

19. A method of manufacturing an ostomy baseplate, the method comprising; providing an adhesive component for coupling the baseplate to the abdomen of the ostomate around a stoma and attaching a collar formed of woven material to the adhesive component to form a baseplate.
