Abstract
Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS OF USING MULTI-STATION BLOCK ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FRAME FOR CARRYING BUFFER STATUS REPORT INFORMATIONBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to a method and apparatus of using a multi-station (Multi-STA) block acknowledgement (BA) frame for carrying buffer status report (BSR) information.
[0002] 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
[0003] Currently, in a Wi-Fi network, an initial control frame (ICF) is a frame used by an access point (AP) to initiate a frame exchange sequence with one or more non-AP stations (STAs) , and an initial control response (ICR) is a frame used by a non-AP STA to respond the ICF sent from the AP. Each of ICF and ICR is typically a control frame sent in a non-high throughput (non-HT) physical layer protocol data unit (PPDU) (or a non-HT duplicate PPDU) at a lower data rate. However, the non-HT PPDU / non-HT duplicate PPDU does not allow media access control (MAC) protocol data unit (MPDU) aggregation. Hence, when an ICF requests BSR reporting and an ICR is sent in a non-HT PPDU (or a non-HT duplicate PPDU) , sending an aggregate MPDU (A-MPDU) , including an ICR and a quality of service (QoS) Null frame with QoS control and A-ctrl for BSR reporting, is not allowed. Thus, there is need for an innovative control frame design which enables BSR reporting using an ICR in a non-HT PPDU / non-HT duplicate PPDU.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0013] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a wireless communication system that supports the proposed control frame based BSR reporting design according to an embodiment of the present invention. The wireless communication system 100 includes a plurality of wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥1) . For example, the wireless communication system 100 is a wireless local area network (WLAN) system such as a Wi-Fi system compliant with IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard or a next-generation Wi-Fi / WLAN standard. In one embodiment of the present invention, the wireless communication device 102 may be a WLAN device such as a Wi-Fi device acting as an AP, and the wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N (N≥1) may be WLAN devices such as Wi-Fi devices acting as non-AP STAs. In another embodiment of the present invention, the wireless communication device 102 may be a WLAN device such as a Wi-Fi device acting as one AP of a multi-AP (MAP) system, and the wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N (N≥1) may be WLAN devices such as Wi-Fi devices acting other APs of the same MAP system.
[0014] By way of example, but not limitation, wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥1) may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 1, wireless communication device 102 / 104_1 / 104_N includes a processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N, a memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N, a control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N, and a network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N, where the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N includes a transmitter (TX) circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N and a receiver (RX) circuit 120 / 130_1 / 130_N. The memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N is arranged to store a program code. The processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N is arranged to load and execute the program code to manage wireless communication device 102 / 104_1 / 104_N. The control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N is arranged to control communications with other Wi-Fi / WLAN devices. For example, the control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N controls the TX circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to send packets (i.e., PPDUs) to non-AP STA / AP, and controls the RX circuit 120 / 122_1 / 122_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to receive packets (i.e., PPDUs) from non-AP STA / AP, where one or more MAC frames (i.e., one or more MPDUs) may be carried by the same packet (i.e., one PPDU) , and one or more MAC service data units (MSDUs) may be carried by the same MAC frame (i.e., one MPDU) .
[0015] It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present invention are illustrated in FIG. 1. In practice, each of wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥1) may include additional components to achieve designated functions.
[0016] The wireless communication device 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥1) support the proposed BSR reporting design using a control frame (e.g., an M-BA frame) for carrying BSR information. Specifically, the proposed BSR reporting design may include TX-side operations and RX-side operations. For example, the RX-side operations may be used to receive an M-BA frame from a sender and parse BSR information of the sender from the received M-BA frame, and the TX-side operations may be used to generate an M-BA frame that carries BSR information of the sender and send the M-BA frame to a recipient.
[0017] As shown in FIG. 1, the control circuit 126_1 of the wireless communication device 104_1 is arranged to generate an M-BA frame 132_1, and instruct the network interface circuit 127_1 (particularly, TX circuit 128_1 of network interface circuit 127_1) to send the M-BA frame 132_1 to the wireless communication device 102, where the M-BA frame 132_1 is arranged to carry BSR information INF_BSR1 of buffered data to be transmitted by the wireless communication device 104_1. Similarly, the control circuit 126_N of the wireless communication device 104_N is arranged to generate an M-BA frame 132_N, and instruct the network interface circuit 127_N (particularly, TX circuit 128_N of network interface circuit 127_N) to send the M-BA frame 132_N to the wireless communication device 102, where the M-BA frame 132_N is arranged to carry BSR information INF_BSRN of buffered data to be transmitted by the wireless communication device 104_N. Regarding the wireless communication device 102, the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, RX circuit 120 of network interface circuit 117) is arranged to receive the M-BA frame 132_1 sent from the wireless communication device 104_1 and the M-BA frame 132_N sent from the wireless communication device 104_N, and the control circuit 116 is arranged to parse the BSR information INF_BSR1 from the M-BA frame 132_1 received by the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, RX circuit 120 of network interface circuit 117) , and parse the BSR information INF_BSRN from the received M-BA frame 132_N received by the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, RX circuit 120 of network interface circuit 117) .
[0018] In some embodiments of the present invention, the wireless communication device 104_1 / 104_N may generate and send the M-BA frame 132_1 / 132_N to the wireless communication device 102 for unsolicited BSR reporting. In some embodiments of the present invention, the wireless communication device 104_1 / 104_N may generate and send the M-BA frame 132_1 / 132_N to the wireless communication device 102 for solicited BSR reporting that is requested by the wireless communication device 102. For example, the control circuit 116 of the wireless communication device 102 is further arranged to generate an ICF 134, and instruct the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, TX circuit 118 of network interface circuit 117) to send the ICF 134 to the wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N (N≥1) , where the ICF 134 is a control frame that requests BSR reporting from wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N (N≥1) . In response to the ICF 134 sent from the wireless communication device 102, the control circuit 126_1 / 126_N generates the M-BA frame 132_1 / 132_N as an ICR used to respond the ICF 134, and instructs the network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N (particularly, TX circuit 128_1 / 128_N of network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N) to send the ICR (i.e., M-BA frame 132_1 / 132_N) to the wireless communication device 102. By way of example, but not limitation, the ICR (i.e., M-BA frame 132_1 / 132_N carrying BSR information INF_BSR1 / INF_BSRN) may be transmitted in a non-HT PPDU (or a non-HT duplicate PPDU) with better network allocation vector (NAV) protection of legacy non-AP STAs.
[0019] Specifically, the present invention proposes using an M-BA frame (which is an already existing control frame) with repurposed fields / subfields for BSR reporting, and any WLAN device (e.g., a Wi-Fi device that operates as an AP or a non-AP STA) using an M-BA frame for carrying BSR information falls within the scope of the present invention. Further details of an M-BA frame with repurposed fields / subfields for BSR reporting are described as below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0020] Please refer to FIG. 2 and FIG. 3. FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a format of an M-BA frame with one or more Per Association Identifier (AID) Traffic identifier (TID) Info field according to an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a format of a Per AID TID Info field with a Block Ack subfield for carrying a BSR (particularly, a queue size of buffered data in a WLAN device from which the M-BA frame 200 is generated and sent) according to an embodiment of the invention. The BA Control field 202 indicates that a BA frame is an M-BA frame 200. The BA Information field 204 contains one or more Per AID TID Info fields 206, each having an AID TID Info subfield 208, a Block Ack Starting Sequence Control (SSC) subfield 210, and a Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212. The AID TID Info subfield 208 includes an AID11 subfield 214, an Ack Type field 216, and a TID subfield 218. It should be noted that the Block Ack SSC subfield 210 may be optional. If the length of the Block Ack SSC subfield 210 is 2 (octets) , the Block Ack SSC subfield 210 present in the Per AID TID Info field 206 includes a Fragment Number (FN) subfield 220 and a Starting Sequence Number (SSN) subfield 222. In this embodiment, a BSR (particularly, a queue size of buffered data in a WLAN device from which the M-BA frame 200 is generated and sent) 224 is indicated by a specific subfield of the Per AID TID Info field 206. For example, the specific subfield may be the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212.
[0021] To achieve solicited / unsolicited BSR reporting via a control frame (e.g., an ICR in a non-HT PPDU / non-HT duplicate PPDU) , the present invention proposes using repurposed subfields of the Per AID TID Info field 206 of the M-BA frame 200 for carrying BSR information.
[0022] In some embodiments of the present invention, at least one of the AID11 subfield 214, the Ack Type subfield 216, and the TID subfield 218 carries information indicating that the Per AID TID Info field 206 is used for BSR reporting. For example, the AID11 subfield 214 may be assigned by a special value (e.g., 2046) to solely indicate that the Per AID TID Info field 206 is used for BSR reporting. For another example, two of the AID11 subfield 214, the Ack Type subfield 216, and the TID subfield 218 may be jointly used to indicate that the Per AID TID Info field 206 is used for BSR reporting. For yet another example, all of the AID11 subfield 214, the Ack Type subfield 216, and the TID subfield 218 may be jointly used to indicate that the Per AID TID Info field 206 is used for BSR reporting.
[0023] As mentioned above, the Ack Type subfield 216 may be involved in BSR indication of the Per AID TID Info field 206. In some embodiments of the present invention, the Ack Type subfield 216 may be reserved, or may be used to carry information indicating whether latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224 is present. For example, when the SSN subfield 222 carrying latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224 is present in the M-BA frame 200, the Ack Type subfield 216 may be set to indicate that the latency-related information is present in the SSN subfield 222.
[0024] As mentioned above, the TID subfield 218 may be involved in BSR indication of the Per AID TID Info field 206. In some embodiments of the present invention, the TID subfield 218 may be used to indicate a TID of the BSR 224 carried in the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212.
[0025] In a case where the length of the BA SSC subfield 210 is 0, the Per AID TID Info field 206 does not use the BA SSC subfield 210. In another case where the length of the BA SSC subfield 210 is 2 (octets) , the Block Ack SSC subfield 210 may be used to carry latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224. By way of example, but not limitation, the latency-related information may be indicative of delay bound, enqueue time, or target transmission time of the buffered data reported by the BSR 224. At least a portion (i.e., part or all) of the latency-related information may be carried by the SSN subfield 222. For example, the 4-bit FN subfield 220 and the 12-bit SSN subfield 222 may be jointly used to indicate the latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224. In one exemplary implementation, a 16-bit truncated timing synchronization function (TSF) timer value (which is indicative of the latency-related information) may be carried by the 4-bit FN subfield 220 and the 12-bit SSN subfield 222. For another example, the 4-bit FN subfield 220 may be reserved, and the 12-bit SSN subfield 222 may be solely used to indicate the latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224. In one exemplary implementation, a 12-bit truncated TSF timer value (which is indicative of the latency-related information) may be carried by the 12-bit SSN subfield 222.
[0026] As mentioned above, the BSR 224 is indicated in the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212. In some embodiments of the present invention, the length of the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may be fixed at 4 (octets) . The BSR 224 may contain a scaling factor SF and an unscaled value UV. In this way, a queue size QS of buffered data in a WLAN device for transmission can be encoded using (SF, UV) . For example, the BSR 224 may use 9 bits, including a 3-bit scaling factor SF and a 6-bit unscaled value UV.
[0027] One possible relationship between a scaling factor SF and its associated scaling is shown in the following table.
[0028] Table 1
[0029] Based on the relationship between a scaling factor SF and its associated scaling shown in above table, the rules of encoding the queue size QS by (SF, UV) are shown in the following table.
[0030] Table 2
[0031] In a case where the TID subfield 218 of the AID TID Info subfield 208 is not used to carry TID information, the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may be used to carry a 4-bit TID of the BSR 224.
[0032] In a case where the 16-bit Block Ack SSC subfield 210 is absent in the Per AID TID Info field 206, the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may be used to carry 16-bit latency-related information of buffered data reported by the BSR 224.
[0033] In summary, the 32-bit Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 includes a 9-bit BSR 224 (which contains a 3-bit SF and a 6-bit UV) , and may further include one 4-bit TID and / or one 16-bit latency-related information, depending upon actual design considerations. The remaining bits of the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may be reserved. For example, the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may have 23 reserved bits if it is used to carry one 9-bit BSR; the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may have 19 reserved bits if it is used to carry one 9-bit BSR and one 4-bit TID; the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may have 7 reserved bits if it is used to carry one 9-bit BSR and one 16-bit latency-related information; and the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may have 3 reserved bits if it is used to carry one 9-bit BSR, one 4-bit TID and one 16-bit latency-related information. However, these are for illustrative purposes only, and are not meant to be limitations of the present invention. For example, the remaining bits of the Block Ack Bitmap subfield 212 may be used for other purposes.
