Description

Methods, Systems and Computer Program Products for Configuration of Payment Network Edge NodesField of the invention

[0001] The present invention relates to implementation of data messaging within payment networks, and more particularly to methods, systems and computer program products for configuration of payment network edge nodes to enable adaptive determination of optimal network paths for payment data messaging through payment networks. Background of the Invention

[0002] With growing acceptance of electronic payments e.g. credit card  / debit card payments or electronic payment account based payments, there has been a corresponding increase in the transaction load on payment networks, and a proportional increase in the number of network entity failures.

[0003] Figure 1 illustrates a system environment 100 configured for implementing an electronic payment transaction. In system environment 100, a payment transaction instruction may be initiated at terminal device 102 –which may comprise for example, any of a client terminal  / personal computer 102a, a mobile communication device  / smartphone 102b and a point-of-sale (POS) terminal 102c. A payment transaction is initiated at terminal device 102 based on payment card information or payment account information received at terminal device 102 –for example, by way of user inputs at client terminal  / personal computer 102a, or at mobile communication device  / smartphone 102b, or by way of information retrieved by POS terminal 102c from a payment card (not shown) that interfaces with POS terminal 102c.

[0004] Terminal device 102 generates a payment instruction that includes a payment amount, the payor’s payment card information or payment account information, and payee account information. Terminal device 102 transmits the payment instruction to acquirer network 106 (i.e. a data network maintained by an acquirer institution that has issued a payment account to the payee) via communication network 104. Acquirer network 106 in turn transmits the payment instruction to issuer network 108 (i.e. a data network maintained by an issuer institution which has issued the payment card or payment account to the corresponding payor) , through payment network 110 (i.e. a data network maintained by an intermediary between the payee’s acquirer and the payor’s issuer -for example,  or ) .

[0005] Subject to successful authorization of the payor’s payment account or payment card, the requested payment is authorized and the payment amount (that is extracted from the payment instruction) is transferred from the payor’s payment account to the payee’s account. Confirmation of successful transaction completion may thereafter be transmitted back to terminal device 102.

[0006] The payment network comprises a communication network positioned as a communication intermediary between acquirer institutions and issuer institutions, and which enables transaction data messages to be transmitted from one to another. The payment network may also provide other payment transaction related functionality including authentication functionality, authorization functionality and enabling transaction implementation across multiple communication channels.

[0007] For an institution or server (e.g. an acquirer institution, acquirer institution server, an issuer institution or issuer institution server) , to access the functionality of a payment network for the purposes of transaction messaging, the institution or server is assigned one or more edge nodes.

[0008] Due to heavy network messaging loads at acquirer institution servers and  / or issuer institution servers, each acquirer  / issuer (or their respective servers) may be  assigned multiple edge nodes, to transmit data to, or to receive data from, a payment network.

[0009] The payment network in turn comprises a payment network switch. The payment network switch includes one or more servers configured to implement routing functionality of the payment network, and optionally for implementing other payment network functions. To address large networking loads or routing loads, payment network switches typically comprise a plurality of switch data centres located in different locations.

[0010] When an institution or server (e.g. an acquirer institution, acquirer institution server, issuer institution or issuer institution server) seeks to access functionality of a payment network for the purposes of transaction data messaging for implementing a payment transaction, an edge node assigned to the institution or server selects a switch data centre from among a plurality of switch data centres associated with a payment network switch. The edge node then transmits data messages corresponding to the payment transaction to an intended destination node or server through the selected switch data centre. For the purposes of this invention, the term “destination node” shall be understood to mean any target computing device, server, or processor.

[0011] Each switch data centre within a payment network switch may comprise a plurality of connection servers –such that (i) an edge node seeking to transmit a data message through a switch data centre can transmit transaction data messages to any one of several connection servers (within the switch data centre) that are configured to receive data messages from the edge node, and (ii) when a data message received at the switch data centre requires to be forwarded by the switch data centre to a destination node or server, the switch data centre transmits such data messages from any one of several connection servers (within the switch data centre) that are configured to transmit data messages to an edge node assigned to (or communicably coupled with) the destination node or server.

[0012] Figure 2 illustrates a payment network environment 200 having a payment network switch 205 interposed as a communication intermediate between one or more  acquirers 201 (for example, an acquirer network) and one or more issuers 209 (for example, an issuer network) . As shown in Figure 2, each of acquirers 202a and 202b are assigned a plurality of edge nodes through which said acquirer (s) 202a, 202b can access payment network switch 205. Acquirer 202a is provided with edge node 204a and edge node 204b. Acquirer 202b is provided with edge node 204c and edge node 204d. Issuer 208a is provided with edge node 210a and edge node 210b. Issuer 208b is provided with edge node 210c and edge node 210d.

[0013] As shown in Figure 2, payment network switch 205 is provided with a plurality of switch data centres to handle the transaction messaging  / routing load received from various edge nodes communicably coupled therewith. Specifically in Figure 2, payment network switch 205 is provided with switch data centre 206a and switch data centre 206b. Payment network switch 205 and the edge nodes (204a to 210d) are configured such that each edge node can route transaction data messages to, or receive transaction data messages from any of the switch data centres within payment network switch 205. Additionally, it will be noted that switch data centres 206a and 206b are capable of communicating with each other as well –and as a result, data messages received at one switch data centre 206a, 206b can be routed by the receiving switch data centre 206a, 206b to another switch data centre 206a, 206b –thereby providing for fallbacks in case of failure at, or high network loads incident on either one of switch data centres 206a, 206b.

[0014] Figures 3A and 3B illustrate, in more detail, specific features of the payment network environment 200 that is more generally shown in Figure 2. In particular, Figures 3A and 3B illustrate exemplary configurations for an edge node 204a and a switch data centre 206a, of the kind described above. Although the illustrations of Figures 3A and 3B show edge node 204a as being an acquirer-side edge node, it will be understood that any edge nodes within a payment network environment that are configured to enable communication through a payment network switch, may be configured in a similar manner (as described below) . Likewise, although the illustrations of Figures 3A and 3B show a single switch data centre 206a, it will be understood that any switch data centre within a payment network switch may be configured in a similar manner (as described below) .

[0015] As shown in Figures 3A and 3B, edge node 204a comprises a transaction processor 2042. The transaction processor 2042 comprises a processor implemented client interface 2044 and a processor implemented switch interface 2046. Client interface 2044 is configured to enable transaction processor 2042 to communicate with (i.e. to receive data messages from and  / or transmit data messages to) a client server or terminal (for example with an acquirer / issuer server that edge node 204a is assigned to or associated with. Switch interface 2046 is configured to enable transaction processor 2042 to communicate with (i.e. to receive data messages from and  / or transmit data messages to) a payment network switch, or to a switch data centre 206a within a payment network switch. Edge node storage 2048 comprises a non-transitory memory or database that is configured to enable storage of data within edge node 204a. Load balancer 2050 is a processor implemented load balancer that is configured for implementing network path routing of data messages from edge node 204a to another edge node or to another destination node through the payment network switch.

[0016] Switch data centre 206a comprises a transaction processor 2062. The transaction processor 2062 is configured to enable routing of data messages received from acquirer-side  / issuer-side edge nodes, to a specified destination node. Switch data centre 206a additionally includes a plurality of connection servers 2064a to 2064f, wherein edge nodes that transmit data messages to switch data centre 206a require to route said incoming data messages to transaction processor 2062 through one of available connection servers 2064a to 2064f. Likewise, in routing outgoing data messages from switch data centre 206a to an intended recipient edge node or to a destination node, transaction processor 2062 routes said outgoing data messages through one of available connection servers 2064a to 2064f.

[0017] It will be understood from Figures 2 to 3B, that as a result of the plurality of edge nodes assigned to each financial institution  / server, the plurality of switch data centres 206a, 206b within a payment network switch 205, and the plurality of connection servers 2064a to 2064f within each switch data centre 206a, 206b of a payment network switch 205, any data message transmitted from a source node or server to a destination node or server  through a payment network switch 205 has a plurality of available network paths for transmission via the payment network switch.

[0018] Further, as shown in Figure 3B, one or more network paths between a transmitting edge node, and a destination node may be unavailable for any number of reasons, including without limitation hardware failure, underlying communication network failure, and  / or high network loads on a particular hardware entity or network communication path. For example, Figure 3B illustrates an unavailable communication path 2066 between edge node 204a and transaction processor 2062, at connection server 2064a. As a result of such unavailability, load balancer 2050 within edge node 204a may need to reroute data messages via one or more alternate communication paths through payment network switch 205.

[0019] However, existing solutions for network path determination within payment networks suffer from multiple drawbacks. In particular, entities within existing payment networks lack access to network-wide state data or telemetry data –which makes it difficult for load balancers to make intelligent routing decisions. Typically, existing load balancing mechanisms involve round robin type load balancing solutions or other load balancing solutions that are static in nature. These mechanisms suffer from multiple problems, including (i) uneven distribution of transactions across different data centers due to factors such as unstable connections or systems going offline for operations and maintenance, (ii) head of line blocking on certain slow connections or connections with high peak transaction volumes, resulting in a decrease in overall system throughput, (iii) recipients with low transaction processing success rates still receive a large number of transactions, resulting in a decrease in the overall transaction success rate, and (iv) when the processing capacity of the payment network switch changes, the edge nodes are unable to sense the changes, and to effectively change their load balancing mechanism in response to such changes.

[0020] There is accordingly a need for solutions that enable configuration of payment network edge nodes to enable adaptive determination of optimal network paths for payment data messaging through payment networks.

[0041] Figure 20 illustrates an exemplary computer system according to which various embodiments of the present invention may be implemented.Summary

[0072] AI engine 4054 comprises a processor implemented engine configured for one or more of receiving, generating, and updating or modifying, artificial intelligence models that are capable of determining one or more network paths between a source node and a destination node through a payment network switch –based on telemetry data available to the edge node 404a. As explained in more detail subsequently, AI engine 4054 is additionally configured for data synchronization with exchange server (s) 4066 within switch data centre (s) 406a of a payment network switch -such that (i) AI models stored within edge node 404a are transmittable to exchange server (s) 4066 for storage therewithin, and (ii) AI models stored within exchange server 4066 (or within a memory or database coupled with exchange server 4066) are receivable by AI engine 4054 for storage within edge node storage 4048.

[0073] AI engine 4054 is also configured to use AI models that are stored within edge node storage 4048 to determine network paths between a source node and a destination node through a payment network switch –based on telemetry data available to the edge node 404a, and to transmit said determination to load balancer 4050 –such that load balancer 4050 can adaptively select an appropriate network path for transmitting data messages between the source node and the destination node.

[0074] Switch data centre 406a comprises a transaction processor 4062. The transaction processor 4062 is configured to enable routing of data messages received from acquirer-side or issuer-side edge nodes, to a specified destination node. Switch data centre 406a additionally includes a plurality of connection servers 4064a to 4064f, wherein edge nodes that transmit data messages to switch data centre 406a require to route said incoming data messages to transaction processor 4062 through one of available connection servers 4064a to 4064f. Likewise, in routing outgoing data messages from switch data centre 406a to an intended recipient edge node or to a destination node, transaction processor 4062 routes said outgoing data messages through one of available connection servers 4064a to 4064f.

[0075] In addition to the above, switch data centre 406a includes a processor implemented exchange server 4066.

[0076] Exchange server 4066 is configured for performing data synchronization with edge nodes (404a to 410d) -such that (i) telemetry data stored within edge nodes (404a to 410d) is transmitted to exchange server (s) 4066 for storage therewithin, and (ii) telemetry data stored within exchange server 4066 (or within a memory or database coupled with exchange server 4066) is transmitted to telemetry controller (s) 4052 in each edge node (404a to 410d) for storage within edge node storage 4048 within each such edge node (404a to 410d) .

[0077] Exchange server 4066 is additionally configured for performing data synchronization with edge nodes (404a to 410d) -such that (i) AI models stored within one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) are transmitted to exchange server (s) 4066 for storage therewithin, and (ii) AI models stored within exchange server 4066 (or within a memory or database coupled with exchange server 4066) are transmitted to AI engine (s) 4054 in each edge node (404a to 410d) for storage within edge node storage 4048 within each such edge node (404a to 410d) .

[0078] The functionality and operation of payment network environment 400 is described in more detail below in connection with the methods illustrated in Figures 5 to 19.

[0079] Figure 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method for updating a telemetry database at an exchange server 4066 within a payment network switch data centre 406a. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 5 is implemented within any of a payment network switch 405, a switch data centre 406a, or an exchange server 4066 configured in the manner described above.

[0080] Step 502 comprises receiving at exchange server 4066, a set of local telemetry data from at least one edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send or receive data from  connection servers within payment network switch data centre 406a. In an embodiment, the local telemetry data is telemetry data stored in edge node storage 4048 within the at least one edge node. In a particular embodiment, the local telemetry data is transmitted to exchange server 4066 by the edge node, and even more particularly, by a telemetry controller 4052 within an edge node 404a. The local telemetry data transmitted from edge node 404a may, in an embodiment, comprise telemetry data that has been detected or recorded by telemetry controller 4052, or that has been received from another node by telemetry controller 4052. In a further embodiment, the local telemetry data transmitted from edge node 404a to exchange server 4066 comprises state data associated with one or more of payment networks, payment network switch (es) 405, payment network switch data centre (s) 406a, edge nodes (404a to 410d) , and any other nodes that edge node 404a is capable of communicating with (directly or indirectly) through payment network switch 405. In an embodiment, the local telemetry data that is transmitted to exchange server 4066 comprises current or most recent telemetry data stored within edge node 404a.

[0081] At step 504, exchange server 4066 updates a database associated with the exchange server 4066, with the received set of local telemetry data.

[0082] It would be understood that the method of Figure 5 may be used to enable exchange server 4066 to receive local telemetry data from multiple edge nodes (and in a preferred embodiment from all edge nodes) that are configured to communicate with or through payment network switch 405. As a result of receiving local telemetry data from several edge nodes, exchange server 4066 is able to build a database of network-wide telemetry data, and to thereby improve or optimize its database of current telemetry data for the entire payment network.

[0083] Figure 6 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 5, wherein the method of updating a database is implemented based on a data pull architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 6 is implemented within any of a payment  network switch 405, a payment network switch data centre 406a, or an exchange server 4066.

[0084] Step 602 comprises detecting a local telemetry data synchronization pull event. The local telemetry data synchronization pull event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for exchange server 4066 or another device to initiate a local telemetry data synchronization pull process. Examples of data synchronization pull events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 602 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at the exchange server 4066 or such other device that has been configured to implement step 602.

[0085] Step 604 comprises identifying a set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a. The identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) may comprise all edge nodes that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a, or any subset thereof.

[0086] At step 606, for each edge node within the identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) , a telemetry data synchronization communication session is established between exchange server 4066 (i.e. the exchange server corresponding to payment network switch data centre 406a) and (ii) a telemetry controller 4052 within said edge node.

[0087] At step 608, for each telemetry data synchronization communication session established with a corresponding edge node, exchange server 4066 initiates retrieval of a set of local telemetry stored within a memory of said edge node. In an embodiment, the set of local telemetry data that is retrieved from a memory of said edge node comprises current or most recent telemetry data stored within the edge node 404a.

[0088] In an embodiment of step 608, for each telemetry data synchronization communication session established with a corresponding edge node, exchange server 4066 transmits a request for local telemetry data stored in an edge node storage 4048 within said edge node –and telemetry controller 4052 within the edge node responds to the request by retrieving the local telemetry data from edge node storage 4048 and transmitting it to exchange server 4066.

[0089] Step 610 comprises updating a database associated with exchange server 4066, with the set of local telemetry data retrieved through each of the established telemetry data synchronization communication sessions. In various embodiments, the database that is updated at step 610 comprises a non-transitory memory or database located within or communicably coupled with exchange server 4066.

[0090] Figure 7 is a flowchart illustrating another embodiment of the method of Figure 5, wherein the method of updating a database at an exchange server 4066 with telemetry data from edge nodes (404a to 410d) is performed based on a data push architecture.

[0091] In various embodiments, the method of Figure 7 is implemented within any one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0092] Step 702 comprises detecting a local telemetry data synchronization push event. The local telemetry data synchronization push event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for an edge node (404a to 410d) or any other device to initiate a data synchronization push process at the edge node. Examples of data synchronization push events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 702 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at an edge node or at any other device that is configured to implement step 702.

[0093] Step 704 comprises identifying a payment network switch data centre 406a that the edge node is configured to send data to, or receive data from, through one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within said payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0094] Step 706 comprises establishing a telemetry data synchronization communication session between a telemetry controller 4052 within the edge node (404a to 410d) and an exchange server 4066 corresponding to the identified payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0095] Step 708 comprises transmitting to the exchange server 4066, from the edge node (404a to 410d) or from telemetry controller 4052 within said edge node, a set of local telemetry data stored within a memory of the edge node. In an embodiment, the set of local telemetry data that is transmitted comprises current or most recent telemetry data stored within the memory of edge node 404a. In an embodiment of method step 708, telemetry controller 4052 within the edge node retrieves a current set of local telemetry data stored within edge node storage 4048 of the edge node and transmits it to exchange server 4066.

[0096] Step 710 comprises updating a database (for example, a global telemetry database) associated with exchange server 4066, with the current set of local telemetry data transmitted from the edge node. In various embodiments, the updated database comprises a non-transitory memory or database located within or communicably coupled with exchange server 4066.

[0097] In an embodiment, the methods of Figures 5 to 7 can be performed at each payment network switch data centre 406a within a payment network. It would be understood that by implementing the methods of any one or more Figures 5 to 7, databases within a payment network switch 405, or within one or more (and preferably each) payment network switch data centre 406a within a payment network switch 405 may be regularly updated with local telemetry data that has been detected by or stored at individual edge nodes –thereby enabling payment network switch 405 to maintain a database of updated  network-wide telemetry data that can be regularly updated with current telemetry conditions or states retrieved from individual edge nodes.

[0098] Figure 8 is a flowchart illustrating a method for updating an edge node (404a to 410d) with network-wide telemetry data received from a payment network switch data centre 406a. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 8 is implemented within any one or more, or all, edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. It would be understood based on the methods discussed in connection with Figures 5 to 7, that since payment network switch data centre (s) 406a is  / are configured (for example through exchange server 4066) to accumulate and store current (and network-wide) telemetry data from edge nodes (404a to 410d) across a payment network environment 400, the method of Figure 8 ensures that individual edge nodes (404a to 410d) within payment network environment 400 can also be updated with said current (and network-wide) telemetry data (including telemetry data that has been detected by other edge nodes) by receiving (either periodically, or otherwise) such data from exchange server 4066.

[0099] Step 802 comprises receiving at telemetry controller 4052 within an edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a, a set of telemetry data stored within a database associated with exchange server 4066 within payment network switch data centre 406a. In an embodiment, the set of telemetry data comprises current or most recent telemetry data stored by exchange server 4066.

[0100] Step 804 comprises storing in a memory (for example, edge node storage 4048) within the edge node, the set of telemetry data received from exchange server 4066.

[0101] Figure 9 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 8, wherein an edge node (404a to 410d) is updated with current network-wide telemetry data based on a data push architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 9 is  implemented within any of a payment network switch 405, a payment network switch data centre 406a, or an exchange server 4066.

[0102] Step 902 comprises detecting a telemetry data synchronization push event at exchange server 4066. The telemetry data synchronization push event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for exchange server 4066 (or any other device) to initiate a data synchronization push process. Examples of data synchronization push events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 902 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at exchange server 4066 or at any other device that is configured to implement step 902.

[0103] Step 904 comprises identifying a set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within the payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0104] At step 906, for each edge node (404a to 410d) within the identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) , a telemetry data synchronization session is established between (i) exchange server 4066 within the payment network switch data centre 406a and (ii) a telemetry controller 4052 within said edge node (404a to 410d) .

[0105] At step 908, for each established telemetry data synchronization session, a current set of telemetry data stored within a database associated with exchange server 4066, is transmitted from exchange server 4066 to the corresponding telemetry controller 4052.

[0106] Step 910 thereafter comprises storing within a memory (for example, within edge node storage 4048) within said edge node (404a to 410d) , the current set of telemetry data received through the established telemetry data sync session.

[0107] Figure 10 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 8, wherein edge node (s) is  / are updated based on a data pull architecture. In various  embodiments, the method of Figure 10 is implemented within any one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0108] Step 1002 comprises detecting a telemetry data synchronization pull event at an edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. The telemetry data synchronization pull event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for the edge node (404a to 410d) , or for a telemetry controller 4052 within said edge node, or for any other device, to initiate a data synchronization pull process. Examples of data synchronization pull events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 1002 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at an edge node (404a to 410d) , or at telemetry controller 4052, or at said any other device that is configured to implement step 1002.

[0109] Step 1004 comprises identifying a payment network switch data centre 406a, such that the edge node (404a to 410d) is configured to send data to, or receive data from, one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within said payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0110] Step 1006 comprises establishing a telemetry data synchronization session between telemetry controller 4052 within the edge node (404a to 410d) and an exchange server 4066 corresponding to the identified payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0111] Step 1008 comprises receiving at the edge node (404a to 410d) from the exchange server 4066 (in response to a request transmitted from the edge node to the exchange server) , a current set of telemetry data stored within a database associated with exchange server 4066. This current set of telemetry data is transmitted from exchange server 4066 to  the requesting edge node (404a to 410d) in response to the request transmitted by said edge node (404a to 410d) to exchange server 4066.

[0112] Step 1010 thereafter comprises storing within a memory (for example, within edge node storage 4048) within said edge node (404a to 410d) , the current set of telemetry data received through the established telemetry data synchronization session.

[0113] As a result of implementing the methods of any of Figures 8 to 10, the invention ensures that individual edge nodes (404a to 410d) within payment network environment 400 can be updated with current (and network-wide) telemetry data (including telemetry data that has been detected by other edge nodes) by receiving (either periodically, or otherwise) such data from exchange server 4066 within payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0114] Figure 11 is a flowchart illustrating a method of generating and storing an artificial intelligence model for determining network paths, based on telemetry data stored in one or more edge nodes. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 11 is implemented within any one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. In a particular embodiment, the method of Figure 11 may be implemented using processors located respectively within multiple edge nodes (404a to 410d) , so as to collaboratively use processing resources from the multiple edge nodes for the computationally intensive task of generating and  / or training and  / or configuring an artificial intelligence model.

[0115] Step 1102 comprises selecting from a set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to transmit data to or to receive data from a payment network switch 405 (or that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a) , a sub-set of edge nodes. One or more edge nodes within the selected sub-set of edge nodes have payment network telemetry data stored in respective memories therewithin. In an embodiment, one  or more of the edge nodes within the selected sub-set of edge nodes have payment network telemetry data stored in a respective edge node storage 4048 therewithin. In various embodiments of step 1102, the payment network telemetry data stored in one or more edge nodes within the selected sub-set of edge nodes may comprise telemetry data detected at the same edge node, or telemetry data received from an exchange server 4066 within payment network switch data centre 4066 (as a result of the data synchronization methods of any of Figures 8 to 10) , or a combination thereof.

[0116] Step 1104 comprises any of generating, configuring or iteratively improving, an artificial intelligence model for determining network paths available between a source edge node and a destination edge node through payment network switch 405, wherein generating, configuring or iteratively improving the artificial intelligence model is based on data inputs comprising payment network telemetry data stored in memory within the selected sub-set of edge nodes. The artificial intelligence models is configured to (i) receive as input (s) (a) payment network telemetry data associated with any one or more of a payment network environment, a payment network switch, and  / or one or more entities or network paths within a payment network environment, and (b) data representing a source node or server and a destination node or server between which a data message requires to be transmitted and (ii) output at least one output network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the source node or server to the destination node or server, wherein said output network path identifies one or more of the following network entities (a) a payment network switch data centre, (b) a source node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, (c) a destination node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, and (d) a second edge node positioned between the payment network switch data centre and the destination node.

[0117] In various embodiments of the invention, the artificial intelligence models described above may comprise any of a linear regression model, a non-linear regression model, a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) , a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) , or any other artificial intelligence model that would be apparent to the skilled person.

[0118] In one embodiment of the method of Figure 11, each edge node within the selected sub-set of edge nodes independently generates, configures or iteratively improves an artificial intelligence model based on payment network telemetry data stored within a memory of that particular edge node. In another embodiment of the method of Figure 11, a plurality of edge nodes within the selected sub-set of edge nodes collaboratively generate and  / or configure an artificial intelligence model based on payment network telemetry data that is aggregated from within respective memories of said plurality of edge nodes.

[0119] Step 1106 comprises storing the generated, configured or iteratively improved artificial intelligence model within a memory of at least one edge node within the selected sub-set of edge nodes. In an embodiment, the generated, configured or iteratively improved artificial intelligence model may be stored within a respective memory of each edge node within the selected sub-set of edge nodes. In an embodiment, a generated, configured or iteratively improved artificial intelligence model is stored at step 1106 within an edge node storage 4048 within one or more edge nodes within the selected sub-set of edge nodes.

[0120] Figure 12 is a flowchart illustrating a method wherein generated, configured or iteratively improved artificial intelligence models (that have arisen as an output of the method of Figure 11) are updated at a database within a payment network switch 405.

[0121] Step 1202 comprises receiving at an exchange server 4066 corresponding to a payment network switch data centre 406a, one or more artificial intelligence models that are configured for determining network paths from a source node (or server) to a destination node (or server) through payment network switch 405, and that are stored within a memory associated with at least one edge node that is configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a. In an embodiment, the one or more artificial intelligence models are models that have been generated, configured or iteratively improved in accordance with the method of Figure 11.

[0122] Step 1204 comprises storing the received artificial intelligence model (s) in an AI model database associated with the exchange server or with payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0123] Figure 13 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 12, wherein generated artificial intelligence models are updated at a database within payment network switch 405, based on a data pull architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 13 is implemented within any of a payment network switch 405, a payment network switch data centre 406a, or an exchange server 4066.

[0124] Step 1302 comprises detecting an artificial intelligence model data synchronization pull event. The artificial intelligence model data synchronization pull event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for exchange server 4066 or another device to initiate an artificial intelligence model data synchronization pull process. Examples of data synchronization pull events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 1302 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at exchange server 4066 or at such other device that has been configured to implement step 1302.

[0125] Step 1304 comprises identifying a set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to, or receive data from, one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a. The identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) may comprise all edge nodes that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a, or any subset thereof.

[0126] At step 1306, for each edge node within the identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) , a data synchronization session is established between (i) exchange server 4066 corresponding to the payment network switch data centre 406a and (ii) said edge node.

[0127] At step 1308, for each data synchronization session established with a corresponding edge node, exchange server 4066 initiates retrieval from a memory of said edge node, of one or more artificial intelligence models that are configured for determining network paths from a source node (or server) to a destination node (or server) through payment network switch 405.

[0128] Step 1310 comprises storing the artificial intelligence models received by exchange server 4066 from the identified set of edge nodes, in an artificial intelligence model database associated or coupled with exchange server 4066. In an embodiment, the artificial intelligence model database is located within payment network switch 405 or within payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0129] Figure 14 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 12, wherein generated artificial intelligence models are updated at a database within a payment network switch 405, based on a data push architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 14 is implemented through any one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0130] Step 1402 comprises detecting an artificial intelligence model data synchronization push event. The artificial intelligence model data synchronization push event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for an edge node (404a to 410d) or any other device to initiate a data synchronization push process at the edge node. Examples of data synchronization push events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 1402 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at an edge node or at any other device that is configured to implement step 1402.

[0131] Step 1404 comprises identifying a payment network switch data centre 406a such that the edge node (404a to 410d) is configured to send data to, or receive data from,  one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0132] Step 1406 comprises establishing a data synchronization session between the edge node (404a to 410d) and an exchange server 4066 corresponding to the payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0133] Step 1408 comprises transmitting from the edge node (404a to 410d) to the exchange server 4066, one or more artificial intelligence models that are configured for determining network paths from a source node (or server) to a destination node (or server) through payment network switch 405, wherein said artificial intelligence models are retrieved from a memory of said edge node (for example from edge node storage 4048) for transmission to exchange server 4066.

[0134] Step 1410 comprises storing the received artificial intelligence models in an artificial intelligence model database associated with or coupled with exchange server 4066.

[0135] In an embodiment, the artificial intelligence model database is located within payment network switch 405 or within payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0136] Figure 15 is a flowchart illustrating a method for updating an edge node (404a to 410d) with artificial intelligence models received from a payment network switch 405 or a payment network switch data centre 406a. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 15 is implemented within any one or more, or all, edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. It would be understood based on the methods discussed in connection with Figures 12 to 14, that since payment network switch data centre (s) 406a is  / are configured (for example through exchange server 4066) to accumulate and store artificial intelligence models that have been generated, configured or iteratively improved by edge nodes (404a to 410d) across a payment network environment 400, the method of Figure 15 ensures that individual edge nodes (404a to 410d) within payment network environment 400 can also be updated with an aggregated set of artificial intelligence models (including artificial intelligence models that have been  generated, configured or iteratively improved by other edge nodes) by receiving (either periodically, or otherwise) such models from exchange server 4066.

[0137] Step 1502 comprises receiving at an edge node (404a to 410d) , that is configured to send or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a, one or more artificial intelligence models that are stored within an artificial intelligence model database associated or coupled with an exchange server 4066 within the payment network switch data centre 406a, wherein said artificial intelligence models are configured for determining network paths from a source node (or server) to a destination node (or server) through payment network switch 405.

[0138] Step 1504 comprises storing the received artificial intelligence models in a memory within the edge node (404a to 410d) . In an embodiment, the received artificial intelligence models are stored by the edge node (404a to 410d) within edge node storage 4048.

[0139] Figure 16 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method of Figure 15, wherein artificial intelligence models stored within payment network switch 405 or payment network switch data centre 406a are updated at an edge node (404a to 410d) based on a data push architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 16 is implemented within any of a payment network switch 405, a payment network switch data centre 406a, or an exchange server 4066.

[0140] Step 1602 comprises detecting an artificial intelligence model data synchronization push event at exchange server 4066. The artificial intelligence model data synchronization push event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for exchange server 4066 (or any other device) to initiate a data synchronization push process. Examples of data synchronization push events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 1602 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or  any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at exchange server 4066 or at any other device that is configured to implement step 1602.

[0141] Step 1604 comprises identifying a set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0142] At step 1606, for each edge node (404a to 410d) within the identified set of edge nodes (404a to 410d) , a data synchronization session is established between (i) an exchange server 4066 corresponding to payment network switch data centre 406a and (ii) said edge node (404a to 410d) .

[0143] At step 1608, for each established data synchronization session, a set of artificial intelligence models stored within an artificial intelligence model database within payment network switch data centre 406a is transmitted from exchange server 4066 to the corresponding edge node (404a to 410d) .

[0144] Step 1610 thereafter comprises storing the artificial intelligence models received through each established data synchronization session, in a memory within the corresponding receiving edge node (for example within edge node store 4048) .

[0145] Figure 17 is a flowchart illustrating another embodiment of the method of Figure 15, wherein artificial intelligence models stored within payment network switch 405 or payment network switch data centre 406a are updated at an edge node (404a to 410d) based on a data push architecture. In various embodiments, the method of Figure 16 is implemented within any one or more edge nodes (404a to 410d) that are configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0146] Step 1702 comprises detecting an artificial intelligence model data synchronization pull event at an edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send data  to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. The artificial intelligence model data synchronization pull event may comprise any predefined event that has been defined to signal a trigger for the edge node (404a to 410d) , or for any other device, to initiate a data synchronization pull process. Examples of data synchronization pull events that may be defined for the purpose of implementing step 1702 include occurrence of a specific time, elapse of a defined time window, receipt of a specific data message or data message type, or any other event that is capable of being defined in terms of parameters that are detectable at an edge node (404a to 410d) , or at said any other device that is configured to implement step 1702.

[0147] Step 1704 comprises identifying a payment network switch data centre 406a such that the edge node (404a to 410d) is configured to send data to, or receive data from, one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within said payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0148] Step 1706 comprises establishing a data synchronization session between the edge node (404a to 410d) and an exchange server 4066 corresponding to the payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0149] Step 1708 comprises receiving at the edge node (404a to 410d) from the exchange server 4066 (in response to a request transmitted from the edge node to the exchange server) , a set of artificial intelligence models stored within an artificial intelligence model database within the payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0150] Step 1710 thereafter comprises storing within a memory (for example, within edge node storage 4048) within the edge node (404a to 410d) , the artificial intelligence models received through the established data synchronization session from exchange server 4066.

[0151] As a result of implementing the methods of any of Figures 15 to 17, the invention ensures that individual edge nodes (404a to 410d) within payment network environment  400 can be updated with artificial intelligence models (including artificial intelligence models that have been generated, configured or iteratively improved by other edge nodes and thereafter stored in payment network switch 405 or payment network switch data centre 406a in accordance with the methods of any of Figures 12 to 14) by receiving (either periodically, or otherwise) artificial intelligence models that have been stored within exchange server 4066 (i.e. within payment network switch data centre 406a) .

[0152] Figure 18 is a flowchart illustrating a method for configuring a payment network edge node for adaptive determination of network paths through a payment network. In an embodiment, the method of Figure 18 is performed at an edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a.

[0153] Step 1802 comprises receiving from a payment network switch 405 (or from a payment network switch data centre 406a) , payment network telemetry data retrieved from a memory within payment network switch 405. In an embodiment, the retrieved payment network telemetry data that is received from payment network switch 405, has been previously transmitted to payment network switch 405 by a first set of payment network edge nodes that are communicably coupled with payment network switch 405. Additionally, at least one payment network edge node (404a to 410d) within the first set of payment network edge nodes is distinct from the first payment network edge node .

[0154] Step 1804 comprises storing within a memory corresponding to the first payment network edge node, a set of artificial intelligence models, wherein each artificial intelligence model within said set of artificial intelligence models is configured for determining a network path between a source node and a destination node through the payment network switch, wherein one or more artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models has been generated based on payment network telemetry data.

[0155] In an embodiment of the method of Figure 18, the first payment network edge node is configured to respond to a signal for transmission of a payment transaction data  message to a destination node through the payment network switch by (i) providing as input to a selected artificial intelligence model within the stored set of artificial intelligence models, at least (a) a set of input payment network telemetry data selected from the payment network telemetry data received from the payment network switch, and (b) a set of parameters associated with the payment transaction data message, (ii) receiving as output from the selected artificial intelligence model, a network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the destination node through the payment network switch, and (iii) transmitting the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the destination node through the network path that has been received as output from the selected artificial intelligence model.

[0156] In an embodiment of the method of Figure 18, at least one of the artificial intelligence model within the set of artificial intelligence models stored within the first payment network edge node memory is configured to (i) receive as input (s) : (a) payment network telemetry data associated with any one or more of a payment network environment, the payment network switch, one or more entities within the payment network environment, and one or more network paths within the payment network environment, and (b) parameters associated with the payment transaction data message, said parameters representing a source node and a destination node between which a data message requires to be transmitted through the payment network switch, (ii) and generate as output, at least one output network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the source node to the destination node, wherein said output network path identifies one or more of a payment network switch data centre, a source node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, a destination node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, and a second edge node positioned between the payment network switch data centre and the destination node.

[0157] In another embodiment of the method of Figure 18, the payment network telemetry data is received at the first payment network edge node, from a payment network switch data centre selected from among a plurality of payment network switch data centres that are configured to implement functionality of the payment network switch.

[0158] In a particular embodiment of the method of Figure 18, the retrieved payment network telemetry data that has been transmitted to the payment network switch by the first set of payment network edge nodes is detected at one or more payment network edge nodes within the first set of payment network edge nodes, and is thereafter transmitted from said one or more payment network edge nodes to the payment network switch.

[0159] In an embodiment of the method of Figure 18, the first set of payment network edge nodes includes the first payment network edge node at which the method of Figure 18 is being implemented.

[0160] In a further embodiment of the method of Figure 19, a first sub-set of artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models stored in the first payment network edge node memory have been received at the first payment network edge from the payment network switch. In this embodiment, the first sub-set of artificial intelligence models has been transmitted to the payment network switch by a second set of payment network edge nodes that are communicably coupled with the payment network switch. Additionally, in this embodiment, at least one payment network edge node within the second set of payment network edge nodes is distinct (i.e. different) from the first payment network edge node. In an even more particular embodiment of the above, each artificial intelligence model within the first sub-set of artificial intelligence models has been generated by one or more generating payment network edge nodes within the second set of payment network edge nodes based on payment network telemetry data stored within memory corresponding to at least one of the generating payment network edge nodes. In a further embodiment, the second set of payment network edge nodes includes the first payment network edge node.

[0161] In an alternate embodiment of the above, a second sub-set of artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models stored in the first payment network edge node memory have been generated by the first payment network edge node either by itself or collaboratively with one or more other payment network edge nodes, based on payment network telemetry data stored within memory corresponding to at least the first  payment network edge node. The second sub-set of artificial intelligence models are in an embodiment, transmitted by the first payment network edge to the payment network switch.

[0162] Figure 19 is a flowchart illustrating a method of adaptively determining an optimal network path for data messaging through a payment network, and for transmitting data messages through the determined optimal network path. In an embodiment, the method of Figure 19 is performed at an edge node (404a to 410d) that is configured to send data to or receive data from one or more connection servers (4064a to 4064f) within a payment network switch data centre 406a. In a more preferred embodiment, the method of Figure 19 is performed at an edge node that has been updated (i) with network-wide telemetry data in accordance with the methods of any of Figures 8 to 10, or (ii) with artificial intelligence models received from a payment network switch 405 or a payment network switch data centre 406a, or (ii) both.

[0163] Step 1902 comprises receiving at a first edge node (404a to 410d) , from a source node or source server, an instruction for transmission of a payment transaction data message to a destination node or a destination server through a payment network switch 405. In an embodiment the first edge node (404a to 410d) is an edge node that has been updated (i) with network-wide telemetry data in accordance with the methods of any of Figures 8 to 10, or (ii) with artificial intelligence models received from a payment network switch 405 or a payment network switch data centre 406a, or (ii) both.

[0164] Step 1904 comprises retrieving from a memory within the first edge node (404a to 410d) , a set of artificial intelligence models, each configured for determining network paths from a source node to a destination node through the payment network switch. In an embodiment of the method, the set of artificial intelligence models includes at least two artificial intelligence models -wherein each of the two artificial intelligence models are configured differently from the other. By way of non-limiting example, in an embodiment the first and second artificial intelligence models are different from each other, and are selected from a group comprising (i) a transaction distribution rate model, (ii) a transaction throughput model, (iii) a transaction risk level model, and (iv) a path failure model.

[0165] Step 1906 comprises, for each artificial intelligence model within the set of artificial intelligence models: (i) providing as input (s) to the artificial intelligence model: (a) a current set of payment network telemetry data retrieved from the memory within the first edge node, and (b) data representing the first edge node (as a source node or server) and a destination node (or server) to which the payment transaction data message requires to be transmitted and (ii) receiving as output from said artificial intelligence model, at least one output network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the destination node or server, wherein said output network path identifies one or more of the following network entities (a) a payment network switch data centre, (b) a first edge node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, (c) a destination node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, and (d) a second edge node positioned between the payment network switch data centre and the destination node.

[0166] Step 1908 comprises selecting one of the network paths from the set of network paths that are output by the artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models. In the event that the output from the set of artificial intelligence models comprises a single network path, then the single network path is the default selection at this step. Where the output from the set of artificial intelligence models comprises a plurality of network paths, the selection of one of the network paths from the set of network paths that are output by the artificial intelligence models, may be implemented based on a predefined or preselected load balancing policy implemented at a load balancer (or elsewhere) within the first edge node. The load balancing policy is defined so as to enable selection of a network path out of a plurality of network paths, based on predicted outcomes of each network path.

[0167] Step 1910 thereafter comprises transmitting the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the destination node or server through the network entities identified in the selected network path.

[0168] By implementing one or more of the methods of Figure 5 to 19 hereinabove, the invention enables dynamic or adaptive determination of optimal network paths for transmission of data messages from a source node to an intended destination node through a payment network or through a payment network switch –which results in improved network transmission efficiencies for payment transaction data messages through a payment network or payment network switch.

[0169] The invention provides a method for configuring a payment network edge node for adaptive determination of network paths through a payment network. The method comprises performing at a first payment network edge node, the steps of (i) receiving from a payment network switch, payment network telemetry data retrieved from a memory within the payment network switch, wherein (a) the retrieved payment network telemetry data has been transmitted to the payment network switch by a first set of payment network edge nodes that are communicably coupled with the payment network switch, and (b) at least one payment network edge node within the first set of payment network edge nodes is distinct from the first payment network edge node, and (ii) storing within a first payment network edge node memory, a set of artificial intelligence models, wherein each artificial intelligence model within said set of artificial intelligence models is configured for determining a network path between a source node and a destination node through the payment network switch, wherein one or more artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models has been generated based on payment network telemetry data. The first payment network edge node is configured to respond to a signal for transmission of a payment transaction data message to a destination node through the payment network switch by (i) providing as input to a selected artificial intelligence model within the stored set of artificial intelligence models, at least (a) a set of input payment network telemetry data selected from the payment network telemetry data received from the payment network switch, and (b) a set of parameters associated with the payment transaction data message, (ii) receiving as output from the selected artificial intelligence model, a network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the destination node through the payment network switch, and (iii) transmitting the payment transaction data message from the first edge node to the  destination node through the network path that has been received as output from the selected artificial intelligence model.

[0170] In an embodiment of the method, at least one of the artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models stored within the first payment network edge node memory is configured to (i) receive as input (s) (a) payment network telemetry data associated with any one or more of a payment network environment, the payment network switch, one or more entities within the payment network environment, and one or more network paths within the payment network environment, and (b) parameters associated with the payment transaction data message, said parameters representing a source node and a destination node between which a data message requires to be transmitted through the payment network switch, and (ii) generate as output, at least one output network path for transmission of the payment transaction data message from the source node to the destination node, wherein said output network path identifies one or more of a payment network switch data centre, a source node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, a destination node-side connection server at the payment network switch data centre, and a second edge node positioned between the payment network switch data centre and the destination node.

[0171] In another embodiment of the method, the payment network telemetry data is received at the first payment network edge node, from a payment network switch data centre selected from among a plurality of payment network switch data centres that are configured to implement functionality of the payment network switch.

[0172] In a particular method embodiment, the retrieved payment network telemetry data that has been transmitted to the payment network switch by the first set of payment network edge nodes (i) is detected at one or more payment network edge nodes within the first set of payment network edge nodes, and (ii) is thereafter transmitted from said one or more payment network edge nodes to the payment network switch.

[0173] In a specific embodiment of the method, the first set of payment network edge nodes includes the first payment network edge node.

[0174] In another method embodiment, (i) a first sub-set of artificial intelligence models within the set of artificial intelligence models stored in the first payment network edge node memory have been received at the first payment network edge from the payment network switch, (ii) the first sub-set of artificial intelligence models has been transmitted to the payment network switch by a second set of payment network edge nodes that are communicably coupled with the payment network switch, and (iii) at least one payment network edge node within the second set of payment network edge nodes is distinct from the first payment network edge node.

[0175] In a more specific embodiment of the above method, each artificial intelligence model within the first sub-set of artificial intelligence models has been generated by one or more generating payment network edge nodes within the second set of payment network edge nodes based on payment network telemetry data stored within memory corresponding to at least one of the generating payment network edge nodes.

[0176] In another embodiment of the above method, the second set of payment network edge nodes includes the first payment network edge node.
