Description

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION METHOD USING AGGREGATED PHYSICAL LAYER DATA UNIT FOR UPLINK / DOWNLINK TRANSMISSIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to a wireless communication method using an aggregated physical layer data unit (APPDU) for uplink / downlink transmission.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless local area network (WLAN) is a network that uses wireless communication technology (e.g., Wi-Fi technology) to transmit / receive data within a limited range. Hence, a WLAN system may include a plurality of WLAN devices such as Wi-Fi devices including at least one access point (AP) and at least one non-AP station (STA) . Nowadays, Wi-Fi technology encompasses numerous versions, including 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ax, 802.11be, etc. Each version has its unique features and its own physical layer data unit (PPDU) format. Currently, being limited to selecting only one PPDU format for each transmission at a time and preamble signaling limitations to different PPDU formats have led to inefficiencies in WLAN operations. For example, an access point (AP) may support a larger basic service set (BSS) channel bandwidth (CBW) such as 320 MHz, and the non-AP STAs may have a smaller operating bandwidth such as 20 / 40 / 80 / 160 MHz. When one PPDU is transmitted at a time, only a partial bandwidth of the AP is occupied, resulting in a waste of an unused bandwidth of the AP. Thus, there is a need for an innovative PPDU format that is capable of improving the network efficiency and enhancing the total throughput.SUMMARY

[0003] One of the objectives of the present disclosure is to provide a wireless communication method / device using an APPDU for uplink / downlink transmission.

[0004] According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: during a first period, transmitting a first PPDU that occupies a first frequency segment; and during a second period, transmitting a second PPDU that occupies a second frequency segment. The first period overlaps the second period, and the first frequency segment does not overlap the second frequency segment.

[0005] According to a second aspect of the present disclosure, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: during a first period, receiving a first PPDU that occupies a first frequency segment; and during a second period, receiving a second PPDU that occupies a second frequency segment. The first period overlaps the second period, and the first frequency segment does not overlap the second frequency segment.

[0006] According to a third aspect of the present disclosure, an exemplary wireless communication device is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication device includes a network interface circuit and a processor coupled to the network interface circuit. The processor is configured to perform the following operations via the network interface circuit: during a first period, transmitting / receiving a first physical layer protocol data unit (PPDU) that occupies a first frequency segment; and during a second period, transmitting / receiving a second PPDU that occupies a second frequency segment. The first period overlaps the second period, and the first frequency segment does not overlap the second frequency segment. These and other objectives of the present invention will no doubt become obvious to those of ordinary skill in the art after reading the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment that is illustrated in the various figures and drawings.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0013] Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims, which refer to particular components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, electronic equipment manufacturers may refer to a component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ in name but not in function. In the following description and in the claims, the terms "include" and "comprise" are used in an open-ended fashion, and thus should be interpreted to mean "include, but not limited to ... " . Also, the term "couple" is intended to mean either an indirect or direct electrical connection. Accordingly, if one device is coupled to another device, that connection may be through a direct electrical connection, or through an indirect electrical connection via other devices and connections.

[0014] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a wireless communication system that supports the proposed APPDU format according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The wireless communication system 100 includes a plurality of wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥2) . For example, the wireless communication system 100 is a WLAN system such as a Wi-Fi system. In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the wireless communication device 102 may be a WLAN device such as a Wi-Fi device acting as an AP, and the wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N (N≥2) may be WLAN devices such as Wi-Fi devices acting as non-AP STAs.

[0015] By way of example, but not limitation, wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥2) may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 1, wireless communication device 102 / 104_1 / 104_N includes a processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N, a memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N, a control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N, and a network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N, where the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N includes a transmitter (TX) circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N and a receiver (RX) circuit 120 / 130_1 / 130_N. The memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N is configured to store a program code. The processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N is configured to load and execute the program code to manage wireless communication device 102 / 104_1 / 104_N. The control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N is configured to control communications with other Wi-Fi / WLAN devices. It is noted that the control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N can be described as being included within the processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N. For example, the control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N controls the TX circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to send downlink (DL) packets (i.e., DL PPDUs) to non-AP STAs, and controls the RX circuit 120 / 122_1 / 122_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to receive uplink (UL) packets (i.e., UL PPDUs) from non-AP STAs, where one or more media access control (MAC) frames (i.e., one or more MPDUs) may be carried by the same packet (i.e., one PPDU) , and one or more MAC service data units (MSDUs) may be carried by the same MAC frame (i.e., one MPDU) .

[0016] It should be noted that FIG. 1 illustrates the control circuit and the processor as separate components, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto. For example, the control circuit and the processor may be considered as a whole and collectively referred to as a processor. It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present disclosure are illustrated in FIG. 1. In practice, each of wireless communication devices 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥2) may include additional components to achieve designated functions.

[0017] The wireless communication device 102 and 104_1-104_N (N≥2) are Wi-Fi devices supporting the proposed APPDU format. For example, during a DL frame exchange sequence, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 transmits one or more APPDUs to the wireless communication devices (e.g., non-AP STAs) 104_1-104_N, where each APPDU includes multiple PPDUs to different users, among which different PPDUs sent to different users are independent of each other. It is noted that the proposed APPDU refers to the situation where multiple independent PPDUs are transmitted simultaneously through different frequency segments from or to different device. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 (particularly, TX circuit 118 of wireless communication device 102) may transmit a first PPDU (which occupies a first frequency segment) during a first period, and may transmit a second PPDU (which occupies a second frequency segment that does not overlap the first frequency segment) during a second period (which overlaps the first period) ; the wireless communication device (e.g., non-AP STA) 104_1 (particularly, RX circuit 127_1 of wireless communication device 104_1) may receive and decode the first PPDU that occupies the first frequency segment and transmitted during the first period, wherein during the second period (which overlaps the first period) , the second frequency segment (which does not overlap the first frequency segment) is occupied by the second PPDU; and the wireless communication device (e.g., non-AP STA) 104_N (particularly, RX circuit 127_N of wireless communication device 104_N) may receive and decode the second PPDU that occupies the second frequency segment and transmitted during the second period, wherein during the first period (which overlaps the second period) , the first frequency segment (which does not overlap the second frequency segment) is occupied by the first PPDU. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present disclosure. In practice, any Wi-Fi device using the proposed APPDU format during the DL frame exchange sequence falls within the scope of the present disclosure.

[0018] It should be noted that the term “overlap” present in the detailed description may mean “fully overlap” or “partially overlap” , depending upon actual design considerations.

[0019] For another example, during an UL frame exchange sequence, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 receives one or more APPDUs from the wireless communication devices (e.g., non-AP STAs) 104_1-104_N, where each APPDU includes multiple PPDUs from different users. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 (particularly, RX circuit 117 of wireless communication device 102) may receive a first PPDU (which occupies a first frequency segment) during a first period, and may receive a second PPDU (which occupies a second frequency segment that does not overlap the first frequency segment) during a second period (which overlaps the first period) ; the wireless communication device (e.g., non-AP STA) 104_1 (particularly, TX circuit 128_1 of wireless communication device 104_1) may transmit the first PPDU (which occupies the first frequency segment) during the first period, wherein during the second period (which overlaps the first period) , the second frequency segment (which does not overlap the first frequency segment) is occupied by the second PPDU; and the wireless communication device (e.g., non-AP STA) 104_N (particularly, TX circuit 128_N of wireless communication device 104_N) may transmit the second PPDU (which occupies the second frequency segment) during the second period, wherein during the first period (which overlaps the second period) , the first frequency segment (which does not overlap the second frequency segment) is occupied by the first PPDU. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present disclosure. In practice, any Wi-Fi device using the proposed APPDU format during the UL frame exchange sequence falls within the scope of the present disclosure.

[0020] Regarding an 802.11n High Throughput (HT) PPDU format or 802.11ac Very High Throughput (VHT) PPDU format, it cannot transmit to multiple users in the frequency domain. The proposed APPDU format can be used to add additional PPDUs in the frequency domain to extend the user number. Regarding an 802.11ax High Efficiency (HE) PPDU format, transmission to multiple users in the frequency domain is already supported. However, the operating bandwidth of the 802.11ax HE PPDU format is only up to 160 MHz. The proposed APPDU format can be used to add additional PPDUs in the frequency domain to extend the usage to AP’s operating bandwidth (such as 320MHz) . The absence of large bandwidth non-AP STAs could result in significant portions of AP’s operating bandwidth being unused, causing a decrease in spectral efficiency. To address this issue, a dynamic subband operation (DSO) mechanism is proposed for allowing an AP to trigger a non-AP STA to switch to an indicated subband (i.e., a non-primary channel / subband) by sending one or more initial control frames (ICFs) to the non-AP STA during a DSO transmission opportunity (TXOP) owned by the AP. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the proposed APPDU format may also collaborate with the DSO mechanism.

[0021] FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating a scenario in which the proposed APPDU format collaborates with the DSO mechanism according to an embodiment of the present invention. Suppose that the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 supports 320 MHz operating bandwidth CBW320, the wireless communication device (e.g., STA1) 104_1 is an 802.11ax HE device with 160 MHz operating bandwidth BW160, and the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 (N=2) is an 802.11bn UHR device with 160 MHz operating bandwidth BW160. As shown in FIG. 6, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 transmits a DSO ICF (initial control frame) 602 to both of the wireless communication devices (e.g., STA1 and STA2) 104_1 and 104_2. For example, the ICF 602 may instruct the wireless communication device (e.g., STA1) 104_1 to stay at a primary 160MHz channel P160, and may instruct the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 to switch to a non-primary channel (e.g., secondary 160MHz channel S160) . After receiving the ICF 602, the wireless communication device (e.g., STA1) 104_1 responds with a DSO response frame (i.e., initial control response (ICR) ) 604 on P160. In addition, after receiving the ICF 602, the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 responds with a DSO response frame (i.e., ICR) 606 on S160, it indicates that the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 has switched to the indicated non-primary channel (such as the S160) . After receiving the response frames 604 and 606, the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102 sends an APPDU 608 (which includes two PPDUs 610 and 612 that have different PPDU formats and occupy different frequency segments in the frequency domain) . For example, the PPDU 610 transmitted on P160 is an HE MU PPDU, and the PPDU 612 transmitted on S160 is a UHR MU PPDU. Since the wireless communication device (e.g., STA1) 104_1 operates on P160, it can successfully decode the preamble (e.g., signal “SIG” fields) of PPDU 610 on P160 to recognize that this is an HE MU PPDU targeting itself, and then decodes payload from the HE MU PPDU. Similarly, since the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 operates on S160 due to subband switching, it also can successfully decode the preamble (e.g., signal “SIG” fields) of PPDU 612 on S160 to recognize that this is an UHR MU PPDU targeting itself, and then decodes payload from the UHR MU PPDU. After frame exchange is done, the wireless communication device (e.g., STA1) 104_1 responds with a block acknowledgement (BA) frame 614 on P160, and the wireless communication device (e.g., STA2) 104_2 responds with a BA frame 616 on S160. In this way, during the DSO TXOP owned by the wireless communication device (e.g., AP) 102, the wireless communication devices (e.g., non-AP STAs) 104_1 and 104_2 can benefit from the frequency-domain PPDU aggregation proposed by the present disclosure.

[0022] Further details of the proposed APPDU format are described as below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0023] FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a concept of aggregating multiple PPDUs to form one APPDU for UL / DL transmission according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. One APPDU 200 includes a plurality of PPDUs 202_1, 202_2, …, 202_M-1, 202_M (M≥2) . It should be noted that the number M of PPDUs 202_1-202_M aggregated in the same APPDU 200 may be adjusted, depending upon actual application requirements. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the PPDUs 202_1-202_M may have the same PPDU format (i.e., a PPDU format specified in one Wi-Fi generation) . In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the PPDUs 202_1-202_M may have different PPDU formats (i.e., PPDU formats specified in different Wi-Fi generations) . During a period P_1, the PPDU 202_1 that occupies a frequency segment FS_1 is transmitted over the air. During a period P_2, the PPDU 202_2 that occupies a frequency segment FS_2 is transmitted over the air. During a period P_M-1, the PPDU 202_M-1 that occupies a frequency segment FS_M-1 is transmitted over the air. During a period P_M, the PPDU 202_M that occupies a frequency segment FS_M is transmitted over the air. The periods P_1-P_M are overlapping periods. For example, the period P_1 overlaps any of the periods P_2-P_M. The frequency segments FS_1-FS_M are non-overlapping frequency segments. For example, the frequency segment FS_1 does not overlap any of the frequency segments FS_2-FS_M. With proper settings of frequency segments FS_2-FS_M, the sum of non-overlapping frequency segments may be equal to AP’s channel bandwidth CBWAP (i.e.,  ) .It should be noted that the preamble signal (SIG) contents of PPDUs 202_1-202_M may be different. The AP can use the APPDU 200 with PPDUs 202_1-202_M aggregated in the frequency domain for performing DL transmission to different non-AP STAs. Non-AP STAs can be triggered by the AP to transmit PPDUs 202_1-202_M aggregated in the frequency domain for performing UL transmission to the AP.

[0024] To put it simply, the proposed APPDU format enables aggregation of multiple PPDUs and simultaneous transmission of multiple PPDUs. For example, regarding a DL frame exchange sequence between an AP (e.g., wireless communication device 102) and multiple non-AP STAs (e.g., wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N) , the PPDUs 202_1-202_M aggregated in the same APPDU transmitted from the AP (e.g., wireless communication device 102) to the non-AP STAs (e.g., wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N) may include an 802.11n HT PPDU, an 802.11ac VHT PPDU, an 802.11ax HE PPDU (e.g., HE Single-User (SU) PPDU or HE Multi-User (MU) PPDU) , an 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT) PPDU (e.g., EHT MU PPDU) , and / or an 802.11bn Ultra High Reliability (UHR) PPDU (e.g., UHR MU PPDU) . For another example, regarding a UL frame exchange sequence between an AP (e.g., wireless communication device 102) and multiple non-AP STAs (e.g., wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N) , the PPDUs 202_1-202_M aggregated in the same APPDU transmitted from the non-AP STAs (e.g., wireless communication devices 104_1-104_N) to the AP (e.g., wireless communication device 102) may include an 802.11ax HE Triggered-Based (TB) PPDU, an 802.11be EHT TB PPDU, and / or an 802.11bn UHR TB PPDU.

[0025] For better comprehension of technical features of the present disclosure, the following assumes that one APPDU 200 is formed by aggregating two PPDUs 202_1 and 202_2 (M=2) . In the following, some APPDU formats defined for different frequency-domain PPDU aggregation types are provided. However, these are for illustrative purposes only, and are not meant to be limitations of the present disclosure. A person skilled in the art should readily appreciate that the proposed APPDU format can be extend to include more than two PPDUs.

[0026] Considering a first case where the primary PPDU 202_1 is an 802.11n HT PPDU for DL transmission, the other PPDU 202_2 may be one of an 802.11n HT PPDU, an 802.11ac VHT PPDU, an 802.11ax HE PPDU (e.g., HE SU / MU PPDU) , an 802.11be EHT PPDU (e.g., EHT MU PPDU) , and an 802.11bn UHR PPDU (e.g., UHR MU PPDU) . Specifically, the PPDU 202_1 is an original PPDU before frequency-domain PPDU aggregation, and the PPDU 202_2 is an additional PPDU appended to the PPDU 202_1 by frequency-domain PPDU aggregation.

[0042] Consider a second case where the primary PPDU 202_1 is an 802.11ac VHT PPDU for DL transmission, the other PPDU 202_2 may be one of an 802.11ac VHT PPDU, an 802.11ax HE PPDU (e.g., HE SU / MU PPDU) , an 802.11be EHT PPDU (e.g., EHT MU PPDU) , and an 802.11bn UHR PPDU (e.g., UHR MU PPDU) . Specifically, the PPDU 202_1 is an original PPDU before frequency-domain PPDU aggregation, and the PPDU 202_2 is an additional PPDU appended to the PPDU 202_1 by frequency-domain PPDU aggregation.

[0043] A VHT + VHT APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for VHT + VHT aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0044] Table 6

[0045] The VHT PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the VHT + VHT APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0046] A VHT + HE APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for VHT + HE aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0047] Table 7

[0049] A VHT + EHT APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for VHT + EHT aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0050] Table 8

[0051] The VHT PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the VHT + EHT APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0052] A VHT + UHR APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for VHT + UHR aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0053] Table 9

[0054] The VHT PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the VHT + UHR APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0055] Consider a third case where the primary PPDU 202_1 is an 802.11ax HE PPDU for DL transmission, the other PPDU 202_2 may be one of an 802.11ax HE PPDU (e.g., HE SU / MU PPDU) , an 802.11be EHT PPDU (e.g., EHT MU PPDU) , and an 802.11bn UHR PPDU (e.g., UHR MU PPDU) . Specifically, the PPDU 202_1 is an original PPDU before frequency-domain PPDU aggregation, and the PPDU 202_2 is an additional PPDU appended to the PPDU 202_1 by frequency-domain PPDU aggregation. The 802.11ax HE PPDU format only supports a bandwidth up to 160 MHz (BW160) . Aggregation of one 802.11ax HE PPDU and additional PPDU (s) in the frequency domain can extend the transmission bandwidth from an original value BW160 to a larger value such as BW320. For example, aggregation of one BW160 HE PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) and an additional BW160 HE PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) in the frequency domain can create a BW320 APPDU (which occupies a 320MHz channel bandwidth supported by the AP) . For another example, aggregation of one BW160 HE PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) and an additional BW160 EHT PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) in the frequency domain can create a BW320 APPDU (which occupies a 320MHz channel bandwidth supported by the AP) . For yet another example, aggregation of one BW160 HE PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) and an additional BW160 UHR PPDU (which occupies a BW160 sub-channel) in the frequency domain can create a BW320 APPDU (which occupies a 320MHz channel bandwidth supported by the AP) .

[0072] An HE TB + UHR TB APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for HE TB + UHR TB aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0078] The EHT PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the EHT + EHT APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0079] An EHT + UHR APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for EHT + UHR aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0081] The EHT PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the EHT + EHT APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0082] Considering a sixth case where the primary PPDU 202_1 is an 802.11be EHT TB PPDU for UL transmission, the other PPDU 202_2 may be one of an 802.11be EHT TB PPDU and an 802.11bn UHR TB PPDU. Specifically, the PPDU 202_1 is an original PPDU before frequency-domain PPDU aggregation, and the PPDU 202_2 is an additional PPDU appended to the PPDU 202_1 by frequency-domain PPDU aggregation.

[0083] An EHT TB + EHT TB APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for EHT TB + EHT TB aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0085] The EHT TB PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the EHT TB + EHT TB APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0086] An EHT TB + UHR TB APPDU format is an APPDU format defined for EHT TB + UHR TB aggregation, and is illustrated in the following table.

[0087] Table 19

[0088] The EHT TB PPDU format does not allow transmission of more than one PPDU in the frequency domain, but using the EHT TB + EHT TB APPDU format will be able to support more than one PPDU in the frequency domain as well as transmission bandwidth expansion.

[0089] Currently, if the transmitter wants to transmit an 802.11ac VHT PPDU, it needs to cover all 20MHz channels. The data bandwidth of the typical 802.11ac VHT PPDU is 20 / 40 / 80 / 160 MHz. In other words, the typical 802.11ac VHT PPDU does not support the data bandwidth of 60 / 120 / 140 MHz. Suppose that one of non-AP STAs associated to an AP is an 802.11ac STA. Hence, one of PPDUs 202_1-202_M included in the same APPDU 200 may be an 802.11ac VHT PPDU. If the APPDU 200 requires one 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 60 / 120 / 140 MHz, the typical 802.11ac VHT PPDU is unable to meet the requirements. To address this issue, the present disclosure proposes an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with preamble puncturing (i.e., an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with preamble not transmitted in one or more 20MHz channels) . Hence, at least one of PPDUs 202_1-202_M included in the same APPDU 200 may be an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with preamble puncturing. For example, an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 80 MHz can have 20MHz punctured, resulting in a preamble-punctured 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 60 MHz. For another example, an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 160 MHz can have 20MHz punctured, resulting in a preamble-punctured 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 140 MHz. For yet example, an 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 160 MHz can have 40MHz punctured, resulting in a preamble-punctured 802.11ac VHT PPDU with a bandwidth of 120 MHz.

[0090] FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a format of an 802.11ac VHT PPDU that supports preamble puncturing according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. An 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300 includes a VHT Signal A (VHT-SIG-A) field 302. A BW subfield 306 and a Reserved subfield 308 of the VHT-SIG-Afield 302 are set to jointly indicate a bandwidth of the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300. Specifically, the Reserved subfield is repurposed for bandwidth indication. In a case where the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300 is a typical VHT PPDU without preamble puncturing, the one-bit Reserved subfield may be set to 0. In another case where the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300 is a proposed VHT PPDU with preamble puncturing, the one-bit Reserved subfield may be set to 1. The two-bit BW subfield 306 may be set to indicate a bandwidth of the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300. For example, the data bandwidth of the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300 may be encoded by bits B0-B2 of the VHT-SIG-Afield 302, as illustrated in the following table.

[0091] Table 20

[0092] The receiver will check bits B0-B2 of the VHT-SIG-Afield 302 to recognize the data bandwidth of this 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300, and can decode the following part of the 802.11ac VHT PPDU 300 with a correct decoder.

[0093] The proposed APPDU format enables aggregation of multiple PPDUs and simultaneous transmission of multiple PPDUs, and is capable of improving the network efficiency and enhancing the total throughput (Tput) . Suppose that the transmission time T of one PPDU is 1000 microseconds (us) , and the total data size is 160 MHz (PHY rate) *3000 us. Compared to a BW80 PPDU, a BW160 PPDU can carry more bits per unit time. If the data is transmitted using BW160 PPDUs, the total transmission time 3*T is needed. If the data is transmitted using BW160 PPDUs and additional BW80 PPDUs, the total transmission time can be reduced to (1. x) *T.

[0094] FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating a first scenario in which the total throughput is enhanced by using the proposed APPDU format. Suppose that a first non-AP STA (e.g., wireless communication device 104_1) is an 802.11ac BW80 STA, a second non-AP STA (e.g., wireless communication device 104_2 (N=2) ) is an 802.11ax BW160 STA, the transmission time T1 is equal to the transmission time T2, and the 160MHz physical layer (PHY) rate is two times as large as the 80MHz PHY rate. The sub-diagram (A) of FIG. 4 shows a condition where data is transmitted without the use of the proposed APPDU format. Since one PPDU is transmitted at a time, Tput of the first non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1)  /  (T1+T2) , and Tput of the second non-AP STA is (160MHz PHY rate*T2)  /  (T1+T2) . The sub-diagram (B) of FIG. 4 shows a condition where data is transmitted with the use of the proposed APPDU format. Since the proposed APPDU format allows multiple PPDUs to be transmitted simultaneously, Tput of the first non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1)  /  (T1+T2) , and Tput of the second non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1 + 160MHz PHY rate*T2)  /  (T1+T2) . The second non-AP STA will get 50%Tput gain due to one APPDU transmitted during the transmission time T1.

[0095] FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a second scenario in which the total throughput is enhanced by using the proposed APPDU format. Suppose that a first non-AP STA (e.g., wireless communication device 104_1) is an 802.11ac BW80 STA, a second non-AP STA (e.g., wireless communication device 104_2 (N=2) ) is an 802.11ax BW80 STA, and the transmission time T1 is equal to the transmission time T2. The sub-diagram (A) of FIG. 5 shows a condition where data is transmitted without the use of the proposed APPDU format. Since one PPDU is transmitted at a time, Tput of the first non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1)  /  (T1+T2) , and Tput of the second non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T2)  /  (T1+T2) . The sub-diagram (B) of FIG. 5 shows a condition where data is transmitted with the use of the proposed APPDU format. Since the proposed APPDU format allows multiple PPDUs to be transmitted simultaneously, Tput of the first non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1 + 80MHz PHY rate*T2)  /  (T1+T2) , and Tput of the second non-AP STA is (80MHz PHY rate*T1 + 80MHz PHY rate*T2)  /  (T1+T2) . Each of the first non-AP STA and the second non-AP STA will get 100%Tput gain due to one APPDU transmitted during the transmission time T1 and another APPDU transmitted during the transmission time T2.
