[0006] In neonatal intensive care units, infant care is routinely carried out with latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves, depending on the hospital’s procurement procedure. These gloves block the natural sense of touch on the surface of the newborn’s skin, causing an artificial sensation and depriving the newborns of the sense of touch.
[0007] The sense of touch is a highly important factor in neonatal intensive care units, as it strengthens the nurse-infant relationship, supports the development of attachment and a sense of security in the newborn, and helps reduce stress. In neonatal intensive care units, newborns are frequently exposed to disturbing tactile stimuli due to procedural interventions and are unable to sufficiently experience soothing touches. Although skin-to-skin contact is often provided with the mother, restrictions on mothers’ visiting hours in the unit result in this contact being limited to certain time periods. Infants need tactile stimuli from nurses for appropriate developmental progress. However, infection control measures restrict nurse-infant contact to glove use. The use of gloves is one of the most significant barriers to skin-to-skin contact between the newborn and the nurse. The use of latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves prevents the newborn from perceiving the sense of touch and creates an artificial sensation.
