Description

SEAMLESS TERRESTRIAL NETWORK AND NON-TERRESTRIAL NETWORK OPERATION IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure claims the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 716,272, filed 05 November 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to a seamless terrestrial network (TN) and non-terrestrial network (NTN) operation in mobile communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] In wireless communications such as mobile communications under the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specification, it is expected that in 6th Generation (6G) a user equipment (UE) can operate seamlessly in TN and NTN networks, whereas the networks can be from different operators that are in partnership. However, under current 3GPP specifications the UE cannot be registered in different networks simultaneously. As such, moving between networks would cause signaling overhead. Therefore, there is a need for a solution of a seamless TN and NTN operation regarding UE registration in mobile communications.SUMMARY

[0004] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits, and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Select implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0005] An objective of the present disclosure is to propose solutions or schemes that address the issue (s) described herein. More specifically, various schemes proposed in the present disclosure are believed to provide solutions pertaining to a seamless TN and NTN operation regarding UE registration in mobile communications. It is believed that implementations of one or more of the schemes proposed herein may address or otherwise alleviate the issues described above.

[0006] In one aspect, a method may involve a UE performing a registration in a first network and a second network. The method may also involve the UE remaining registered in the first network and the second network simultaneously. The first network and the second network may be different types of networks; for instance, the first network may be a non-terrestrial network (NTN) and the second network may be a terrestrial network (TN) .

[0007] In another aspect, an apparatus, as a UE, may include a transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly and a processor coupled to the transceiver. The processor may perform a registration in a first network and a second network. The processor may also remain registered in the first network and the second network simultaneously. The first network and the second network may be different types of networks (e.g., the first network being an NTN and the second network being a TN) .

[0008] It is noteworthy that, although the description provided herein may be in the context of certain radio access technologies, networks, and network topologies such as 5th Generation (5G) New Radio (NR)  / Beyond Fifth-Generation (B5G)  / 6th Generation (6G) mobile communications, the proposed concepts, schemes and any variation (s)  / derivative (s) thereof may be implemented in, for and by other types of radio access technologies, networks and network topologies such as, for example and without limitation, 4th Generation (4G)  / Long-Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, Internet-of-Things (IoT) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) , Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) , vehicle-to-everything (V2X) , and non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited to the examples described herein.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Overview

[0014] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to a seamless TN and NTN operation regarding UE registration in mobile communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0015] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 3 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 3.

[0016] Referring to FIG. 1, network environment 100 involves a UE 110 in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 (e.g., a mobile network including an NTN and a TN) via a terrestrial network node 125 (e.g., an evolved Node-B (eNB) , a Next Generation Node-B (gNB) , or a transmission / reception point (TRP) ) and / or a non-terrestrial network node 128 (e.g., a satellite) . For example, the terrestrial network node 125 and / or the non-terrestrial network node 128 may form a non-terrestrial network (NTN) serving cell for wireless communication with the UE 110. In some implementations, the UE 110 may be an IoT device such as an NB-IoT UE or an enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) UE (e.g., a bandwidth reduced low complexity (BL) UE or a coverage enhancement (CE) UE) . In such communication environment, the UE 110, the network 120, the terrestrial network node 125, and the non-terrestrial network node 128 may implement various schemes pertaining to a seamless TN and NTN operation regarding UE registration in accordance with the present disclosure, as described below.

[0017] It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately. Moreover, as used herein, a lower layer may refer to a layer in the 5GMM protocol stack that is lower than the radio resource control (RRC) layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio control link (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, a physical (PHY) layer, or so forth.

[0018] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, UE 110 may perform a registration procedure in network A and network B one by one, with network A being a TN and network B being an NTN. UE 110 may register and remain registered in networks A and B simultaneously. Both network A and network B may provide 3GPP access.

[0019] Under the proposed scheme, UE 110 may maintain a single signaling connection at a time, although a short period of overlapping in signaling connections when connection is switched from network A to network B or from network B to network A may be allowed. Moreover, UE 110 may determine (or may be configured to determine) one of the networks as a primary / home network and another network as a secondary / home / visited network.

[0020] Under the proposed scheme, in case that both accesses are available (network A and network B, that is) , UE 110 may (as a preferable option) register on both networks (for further smooth data traffic switching) , and UE 110 may maintain a data traffic on the configured / decided primary network (e.g., network A) when available and switch to the secondary network (e.g., network B) when estimated to be necessary (e.g., degradation in network A signaling quality, decrease in data rate / quality, and the like) .

[0021] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, UE 110 may have one registration management (RM) context for each access (each of network A and network B, that is) when UE 110 is consecutively or simultaneously served by a 3GPP TN access (e.g., network A) and by a 3GPP NTN access (e.g., network B) . For instance, UE 110 may store necessary information of network A and network B in a universal subscriber identity module (USIM) or non-volatile memory.

[0022] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, the network or a unified data management (UDM) function of the network may manage separate / independent UE registration procedures for each access. Correspondingly, UE 110 may handle two separate registrations, including two globally unique temporary identifiers (GUTIs) , one per public land mobile network (PLMN) , two security contexts and / or two associated equivalent PLMN lists.

[0023] As an illustrative example scenario for registrations to network A and network B, UE 110 may find a suitable cell of network A (e.g., TN) , camp on the cell and register into network A, and may be authenticated with non-access stratum (NAS) security context being assigned (in 5th Generation (5G) and / or 6th Generation (6G) ) . Optionally, UE 110 may establish a session for data traffic. Data pipe / bearer may need not be established / set up if UE 110 does not have any uplink data to send.

[0024] Meanwhile, UE 110 may observe being in a cell (area) of network B (e.g., NTN) . To prepare for registration to network B, UE 110 may inform network A as being unavailable / absent for network A (and UE 110 may also indicate a duration during which UE 110 is to be unavailable) . After network A is informed about UE 110’s unavailability, UE 110 may locally release the NAS signaling connection and enter a REGISTERED. NO-CELL-AVAILABLE state for network A. To register to network B, UE 110 may include in a registration request a GUTI if received from the previously registered PLMN (e.g., network A) . If UE 110 does not include a GUTI, a subscription concealed identity (SUCI)  / IMSI / identifier may be used for the new registration. Upon successful completion of the registration to the second access, UE 110 may have the two GUTIs (one per PLMN) corresponding to network A and network B. Data pipe / bearer may need not be established / setup if UE 110 does not have any uplink data to send.

[0025] In case that network A is still available and signaling quality is good, UE 110 may suspend the access to network B, for example, by informing network B that UE 110 is unavailable / absent from network B (and UE 110 may include a time duration of unavailability in an uplink message) . UE 110 may locally release the NAS signaling connection and enter a REGISTERED. NO-CELL-AVAILABLE state for network B.

[0026] In case that UE 110 has uplink signaling / data to send, and in case that UE 110 determines network A is available, UE 110 may establish a signaling connection with network A. The signaling connection establishment may be performed with a tracking area update (TAU)  / mobility registration update (MRU)  / other registration request type of message or by a service request or by a data transport message, or by another dedicated new message meant for activating signaling connection.

[0027] Even if UE 110 has no uplink data to send, UE 110, to be reachable by a network (e.g., to receive paging) , UE 110 may indicate that it is available for either network A or network B, if available. The indication of availability may be performed with a TAU / MRU / other registration request type of message or by a service request or by a data transport message, or by another dedicated new message meant for indicating UE 110 is no more absent / unavailable for the network.

[0028] When moving from network A to network B or from network B to network A, in case that UE 110 is in a TAI of a TAI list (received from a network) or registration area (RA) (received from a network) of the target network (e.g., network A or B) , UE 110 may not need to perform registration updates, but UE 110 may simply establish a signaling (e.g., radio resource control (RRC) ) connection with the target network from IDLE to CONNECTED or resuming (from IDLE to CONNECTED) or activating an existing connection (e.g., from CONNECTED INACTIVE to CONNECTED) , or from NAS protocol perspective by triggering a SERVICE REQUEST procedure, or an uplink DATA TRANSPORT.

[0029] With respect to storage of necessary information, UE 110 may store the necessary information of network A and network B in the USIM or non-volatile memory together with the subscription permanent identifier (SUPI)  / international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI)  / subscription identity from the USIM. One or more of the following Mobility Management (MM) parameters may be stored per PLMN: (a) GUTI; (b) last visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) ; (c) update status; (d) NAS security context parameters from a full native NAS security context; and / or (e) KAUSF and KSEAF (or corresponding system specific keys) . Additional Notes

[0051] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.

[0052] Further, with respect to the use of substantially any plural and / or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and / or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and / or application. The various singular / plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for sake of clarity.

[0053] Moreover, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims, e.g., bodies of the appended claims, are generally intended as “open” terms, e.g., the term “including” should be interpreted as “including but not limited to, ” the term “having” should be interpreted as “having at least, ” the term “includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to, ” etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to implementations containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an, " e.g., “a” and / or “an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one” or “one or more; ” the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should be interpreted to mean at least the recited number, e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations, " without other modifiers, means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”
