AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In contemporary cellular networks, uplink and downlink carriers are often co-located, leading to challenges in setting uplink signals when they are far apart from downlink carriers, especially in scenarios where interference dominates signal-to-noise ratio, causing self-interference and degraded downlink performance.

Method used

The UE derives or receives offset settings for uplink transmissions, including time, frequency, power, and beam direction, from downlink signals or network signaling, and adjusts duplex separation based on interference levels to mitigate self-interference and enhance uplink power without degrading downlink performance.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for effective uplink transmission power boosting while minimizing self-interference, thereby improving link robustness and maintaining downlink performance in diverse frequency band operations.

Abstract

Apparatus and methods are provided for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) frequency decoupling. In one novel aspect, the UE with a UL in a high frequency band and DL in a low or mid band, obtains offset settings, including time, frequency, power and beam direction, for its UL transmission. The offset setting is derived from the reception of the DL signal or obtained by a fix semi-static offset or received by the signalling from the base station. In another embodiment, a DL mid-band reference signal is used by the UE for the UL transmission. In one embodiment, the mid-band DL reference signal is of different RAT of the UL and DL carrier. In another novel aspect, the UE measures and or estimates interference level and triggering report indicating to increase the duplex separation or boost UL transmission power.

Description

UPLINK AND DOWNLINK FREQUENCY DECOUPLINGCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 from U.S. Provisional Application Number 63 / 716,271, entitled “UPLINK AND DOWNLINK FREQUENCY DECOUPLING” , filed on Nov. 5, 2024, the subject matter of which is incorporated herein by reference.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The disclosed embodiments relate generally to wireless communication, and, more particularly, to uplink and downlink decoupling.BACKGROUND

[0003] In contemporary cellular deployments, UL and DL carriers are often co-located within a single band or in closely spaced bands to facilitate procedures that reference downlink measurements when configuring uplink transmissions. Examples include applying frequency and time corrections based on DL tracking, and exploiting beam reciprocity in time-division duplex (TDD) operation when UL and DL share similar propagation conditions. As spectrum use diversifies across low, mid, and high frequency ranges, networks may increasingly consider assigning DL reception to higher-frequency bands where downlink data rate and link performance can be maximized by using more transmitter antennas and power, while maintaining UL on mid-or low-bands to overcome uplink coverage bottlenecks on the higher-frequency bands and enable improved link robustness on those bands.

[0004] If the UL band is quite different from the DL band, then there are challenges for setting the UL signal at the device in terms of frequency / time / power / beam direction. When the UL and DL bands are widely separated, directly reusing high-band DL observations as the reference for mid-band UL can be unreliable.

[0005] Improvements are therefore required to provide  / obtain uplink transmission references when the uplink carrier and downlink carrier are far apart.

[0006] Another challenge arises at cell edge or in coverage-limited scenarios for operation of the device in paired bands, where increased UL power may impact the receiver sensitivity at the device and cause degraded downlink performance. It is desirable to decrease self-interference by the transmitter of the device if there is no / low Interference from other sources at the device receiver, i.e. Noise (N) rather than Interference (I) dominates total SINR. But this may not be needed otherwise where interference (I) dominates SINR.SUMMARY

[0007] Apparatus and methods are provided for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) frequency decoupling. In one novel aspect, the UE with a UL in a high frequency band and DL in a low or mid band, obtains one or more offset settings, including time, frequency, power and beam direction, for its UL transmission. In one embodiment, the offset setting is derived from the reception of the DL signal. In another embodiment, the UE obtains a fix semi-static offset provided vs high band DL to device and applied to low or mid-band UL. In another embodiment, the UE receives one or more offset settings from frequent (e.g. periodic) or dynamic signalling from the base station. In one embodiment, the base station derives the offset settings from the reception of the UL transmission. In another embodiment, a DL mid-band reference signal is used by the UE for the UL transmission. The references signal on the mid-band DL is provided by the base station. In one embodiment, the mid-band DL reference signal is of different RAT than the RAT used for communications and data transfer by the UE within the UL and DL carrier.

[0008] In another novel aspect, to overcome self-interference by the UE when operating in paired bands, the UE measures and or estimates interference level and triggering report indicating to increase the duplex separation of the UL and DL carriers, where the network may then configure the UL and DL carriers for the UE to operate in different frequency bands. This may allow the UE to boost the UL transmission power without causing self-interference. Alternatively, the report may indicate that UL transmission power can be increased without increasing duplex distance when interference observed by the device is very high. In one embodiment, the UE a measurement of an interference plus noise level at a receiver of the UE, wherein the UE is connected with a base station with an UL and DL carrier and triggers a report to the base station based on the measurement, wherein the report indicates to increase duplex separation of the UL carrier and the DL carrier when the interference is low / no interference. Alternatively, a report may indicate that the UE has margin for UL transmission power increase without increasing duplex separation when the interference is high.

[0009] This summary does not purport to define the invention. The invention is defined by the claims.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0021] Reference will now be made in detail to some embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

[0022] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system. Aspects of the present disclosure provide methods, apparatus, processing systems, and computer readable mediums for NR (new radio access technology, or 5G technology) , 6G or other radio access technology. NR may support various wireless communication services. These services may have different quality of service (QoS) requirements e.g. latency and reliability requirements.

[0023] Figure 1 is a schematic system diagram illustrating methods for uplink and downlink frequency decoupling in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. Wireless communication network includes one or more fixed base infrastructure units forming a network distributed over a geographical region. The base unit may also be referred to as an access point, an access terminal, a base station, a Node-B, an eNode-B (eNB) , a gNB, or by other terminology used in the art. As an example, base stations serve a number of mobile stations within a serving area, for example, a cell, or within a cell sector. In some systems, one or more base stations are coupled to a controller forming an access network that is coupled to one or more core networks. gNB 106 and gNB 107 are base stations in the wireless network, the serving area of which may or may not overlap with each other. As an example, user equipment (UE) 101 or mobile station 101 is in the serving area covered by gNB 106, and UE 102 is at the edge of cells and in the serving area covered by both gNB 106 and gNB 107.

[0024] In one novel aspect 180, UE obtains reference setting for UL transmission. As an example, UE 101 has a UL transmission on a carrier in frequency band-1 121 and downlink reception on a carrier in frequency band-2 122. In one embodiment, frequency band-1 121 is a low or mid frequency band, and frequency band-2 122 is a high frequency band. The UE obtains reference settings for UL transmission including time, frequency, power, and beam direction (123) .

[0025] In one embodiment 181, the UE derives one or more of uplink timing, frequency, power, or beam direction based on measurements of a downlink signal received on the DL carrier.

[0026] In another embodiment 182, the UE applies fixed semi‐static offsets to references derived from the high‐band DL reception and uses the offset values when setting the uplink on the mid or low band frequency carrier.

[0027] In one embodiment 183, the network derives from uplink signals previously received at the UL transmission from the UE, and sending one or more offset settings including uplink timing, frequency, power, or beam direction for the UE. In one embodiment, the network explicitly signals those values to the UE on the high‐band DL. In one embodiment, the offset settings are carried by explicit signaling are periodic or on demand.

[0028] In another embodiment 184, the UE receives a downlink reference signal on a mid‐band carrier used as a reference signal for setting the uplink transmission. In one embodiment, the mid-band DL reference signal is transmitted using a different radio access technology (RAT) than the technology used for the uplink. In one embodiment, the UL and DL carriers are 6G and mid-band DL reference signal is a 5G NR reference signal.

[0029] In another novel aspect 170, the UL and DL increase duplex separation based on an estimation of self-interferences. As example, UE 102 operates in a UL and DL carrier with self-interference 132 from the UE’s transmitter into its receiver when carriers are proximate.

[0030] In one embodiment 171, the UE estimates an interference plus noise value at the UE receiver under defined measurement conditions, for example, while the UE is not transmitting or while using a predefined uplink transmission profile known not to cause self‐interference. The UE reports an indication to the network indicating the external interference is small or no interference. The network may increase the duplex separation of the UL and DL carriers for the UE to enable higher uplink transmission power but avoiding self-interference.

[0031] In another embodiment 172, the UE obtains an interference plus noise value at the UE receiver. The UE reports an indication to the network indicating the UE has margin for boosting UL transmission power due to large interference from external sources dominating.

[0032] Figure 1 further illustrates simplified block diagrams of a base station and a mobile device / UE that supports AI-based compressed sensing for beam prediction. Figure 1 includes simplified block diagrams of a UE, such as UE 101. The UE has an antenna 165, which transmits and receives radio signals. An RF transceiver circuit 163, coupled with the antenna, receives RF signals from antenna 165, converts them to baseband signals, and sends them to processor 162. RF transceiver 163 also converts received baseband signals from processor 162, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna 165. Processor 162 processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in UE 101. Memory 161 stores program instructions and data 164 to control the operations of UE 101.

[0033] The UE also includes a set of control modules that carry out functional tasks. These control modules can be implemented by circuits, software, firmware, or a combination of them. Reference setting module 191 obtains one or more reference settings for an uplink (UL) transmission on a second carrier of a mid or low frequency band, wherein the one or more reference settings indicate UL timing, UL frequency shift, UL transmission power, and UL beam direction. UL setting module 192 applies the one or more reference settings to the UL transmission on the second carrier of the low or mid frequency band. Measurement module 193 performs a measurement of an interference plus noise level at a receiver of the UE, wherein the UE is connected with a base station with an uplink (UL) carrier and a downlink (DL) carrier. Self-interference module 194 triggers a report to the base station based on the measurement, wherein the report indicates to increase duplex separation of the UL carrier and the DL carrier when a first condition is met, and indicates the UE has margin for UL transmission power increasing when a second condition is met.

[0034] Figure 1 includes simplified block diagrams of a gNB, such as gNB 106. gNB 106 has an antenna 156, which transmits and receives radio signals. An RF transceiver circuit 153, coupled with the antenna, receives RF signals from antenna 156, converts them to baseband signals, and sends them to processor 152. RF transceiver 153 also converts received baseband signals from processor 152, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna 156. Processor 152 processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in gNB 106. Memory 151 stores program instructions and data 154 to control the operations of gNB 106. gNB 106 also includes a set of control modules 155 that carry out functional tasks to communicate with mobile stations.

[0035] Figure 2 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the UE using DL signal as reference for UL transmission in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. UE 201 is connected base station 202 through UL carrier 215 in mid or low frequency band 211 and DL carrier 216 in high frequency band 212. In one scenario 231, when the UL and DL carriers 215 and 216 are not far apart, the UE derives one or more the UL reference settings including time, frequency, power and beam direction, based on the DL signal received (232) .

[0036] Figure 3 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the UE obtains fix semi-static offset settings for UL transmission in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. UE 301 is connected base station 302 through UL carrier 315 in mid or low frequency band 311 and DL carrier 316 in high frequency band 312. At step 331, the UE obtains a fixed semi-static offset setting relative to the reference settings derived based on reception of the downlink carrier, provided vs high band DL carrier. At step 332, the UE applies the obtained semi-static offset settings to the uplink transmission.

[0037] Figure 4 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the UE to receive the UL offset setting from the network in accordance with embodiment of the current invention. transmission of the UE. UE 401 is connected base station 402 through UL carrier 415 in mid or low frequency band 411 and DL carrier 416 in high frequency band 412. At step 431, the UE receive offset settings for the UL transmission from the base station. The offset settings may be relative to the reference derived from the downlink carrier or directly relative to the current UL transmission setting observed by the base station. At step 432, the UE applies the offset settings to its UL transmission. At step 441, the base station receives the UL transmission from the UE, which applied the offset settings. The base station, at step 442 derives the UL offset settings for the UE based on the received UL transmission and sends the derived offset settings to the UE. In one embodiment, the offset setting is derived in a closed loop manner based on prior UL signal received from the UE. In other embodiment, the UL offset settings are derived based on other factors.

[0038] Figure 5 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the UE uses reference signal from a separate mid-band carrier for UL transmission in accordance with embodiment of the current invention. UE 501 is connected base station 502 through UL carrier 515 in mid or low frequency band 511 and DL carrier 516 in high frequency band 512. A DL frequency carrier 510 in the mid or low frequency band is configured for the UE to receive reference signal (RS) . In one embodiment, DL frequency carrier 510 is RS-only carrier. In one embodiment, the UE receives signals from DL carrier 510 intermittently. At step 531, the base station provides  / configures mid-band carrier 510 for the UE. At step 532, the UE uses the mid-band carrier 510 DL RS as reference for its UL transmission on UL carrier 515. Since the mid-band carrier 510 is close to UL carrier 515, the UE can obtain UL information based on the DL RS on carrier 510.

[0039] In one embodiment 520, the mid-band RS signal is carried on a different RAT than the UL and DL signals. As an example, UE 501 is connected base station 502 through UL carrier 515a in mid or low frequency band 511a and DL carrier 516a in high frequency band 512a. In one scenario, frequency band 511a is configured with 5G and 6G for UL only. Frequency band 512a is configured for 6G DL. The reference signal (e.g. Synchronisation Signal Block or other Reference Signal) provided on mid-band DL 510a by the base station uses a 5G NR signal instead of a 6G DL signal.

[0040] Figure 6 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the device to detect the presence of interference and triggering report to the network in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. UE 601 connects with base station 602 with a UL carrier and a DL carrier with a duplex separation 610. At step 621, the UE detects presence of interference. At step 622, the UE triggers a report to the network indicating the UE has margin for UL transmission power boost or indicating an interference level. The UE upon receiving the indication, determines whether to boost the UE UL transmission power. For example, if the interference I in signal interference noise ratio (SINR) is high, then the UE can afford more margin to transmit in the UL direction. At step 631, if the base station, based on the received UE report, determines the I is small, at step 632, the network configures the device such that its UL and DL carrier frequencies are further apart (decoupling to enable increased duplex separation at device) , to reduce self-interference from device transmitter to receiver, potentially subsequently allowing higher transmission power if previously it was limited to minimise self-interference.

[0041] Figure 7 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the UE triggering indications of boosting UL transmission power or increase duplex separation to the network based on configured interference thresholds in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. UE 701 connects with base station 702 with a UL carrier and a DL carrier with a duplex separation 710. In one embodiment, the network sends one or more interference thresholds to the UE. At step 721, the UE receives the one or more thresholds. At step 722, the UE detects / estimates whether interference is present. In one embodiment, the UE detects the presence of interference by measuring the interference and noise. At step 731, the UE determines if a reporting trigger is detected. In one embodiment, the UE compares the measured interference with the received interference threshold and determines a report should be sent to the network. At step 732, the UE sends the report to the base station indicating to increase duplex separation of the UL carrier and the DL carrier when no interference is present, and indicates the UE has margin for UL transmission power increasing when the I in the SINR is high.

[0042] Figure 8 illustrates a flow chart for the UE using the UL transmission offset settings in decoupled UL and DL transmission in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. At step 801, the UE receives downlink (DL) transmission on a first carrier frequency of a high frequency band from a base station. At step 802, the UE obtains one or more reference settings for an uplink (UL) transmission on a second carrier frequency of a mid or low frequency band, wherein the one or more reference settings indicate UL timing, UL frequency shift, UL transmission power, and UL beam direction. At step 803, the UE applies the one or more reference settings to the UL transmission on the second carrier of the low or mid frequency band.

[0043] Figure 9 illustrates a flow for the UE triggering reporting based on interference to increase duplex separation or to boost UL transmission power in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. At step 901, the UE performs a measurement of an interference plus noise level at a receiver of the UE, wherein the UE is connected with a base station with an uplink (UL) carrier and a downlink (DL) carrier. At step 902, the UE triggers a report to the base station based on the measurement, wherein the report provides information to trigger an increase in duplex separation of the UL carrier and the DL carrier when a first condition is met, and indicates the UE has margin for UL transmission power increasing when a second condition is met.

[0044] Figure 10 illustration a flow chart for the base station supporting UL and DL decoupling procedure in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. At step 1001, the base station configures a downlink (DL) carrier in a first frequency band and an uplink (UL) carrier in a second frequency for a user equipment (UE) . At step 1002, the base station receives UL transmission from the UE on the UL carrier. At step 1003, the base station sends UL and DL decoupling information to the UE based on the UL transmission, wherein UL and DL decoupling information comprising: UL offset setting information, increase duplex separation information, and increase UL transmission power information.

[0045] Although the present invention has been described in connection with certain specific embodiments for instructional purposes, the present invention is not limited thereto. Accordingly, various modifications, adaptations, and combinations of various features of the described embodiments can be practiced without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
