Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR NETWORK FUNCTION DISCOVERYTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to communication networks, and more specifically, to a method and apparatus for network function (NF) discovery.BACKGROUND

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] With the rapid development of networking and communication technologies, wireless communication networks such as long-term evolution (LTE)  / fourth generation (4G) network and new radio (NR)  / fifth generation (5G) network are expected to achieve high traffic capacity and transmission efficiency. In order to meet the diverse requirements of new services across a wide variety of industries, the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) is developing various NF services for the communication system architecture (e.g., 5G system (5GS) architecture, etc. ) . The service-based architecture (SBA) under development for the next generation network can restructure the core network control plane and divide it into multiple independent modules with decoupled functions that can be updated individually. The introduction of the service-based interface protocols and network repository function (NRF) may enable the function modules to be used flexibly. In the SBA, service discovery may be provided for individual NFs by an NRF, so as to meet different service requirements.SUMMARY

[0004] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0005] Communication networks such as 5G / NR networks are supposed to support the wide range of performance requirements demanded by multiple access technologies, a variety of services and new device types. A terminal device such as user equipment (UE) may be provided with various services by a communication network via different network nodes and / or functional entity. Considering the diversity of network capabilities and application scenarios, discovery and selection of various network services with different configurations and requirements may become more challenging. For example, in a large operator network with a large number of roaming partners, multiple proxy-call session control functions (P-CSCFs) may be deployed with specific P-CSCF instances / pairs configured to serve specific UEs and / or different serving networks (NWs) such as serving public land mobile networks (PLMNs) . In such a deployment, it may be advantageous to allow a session management function (SMF) handling an Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) protocol data unit (PDU) session for a UE to discover an appropriate P-CSCF for the corresponding UE (e.g., which may be from a roaming serving PLMN, etc. ) . However, the existing solutions do not support discovery and / or selection of P-CSCFs based on UE / NW specific service configurations of the P-CSCFs (e.g., the P-CSCFs may be configured to serve specific UEs and / or serving PLMNs, etc. ) . Therefore, it may be desirable to enhance P-CSCF discovery for UEs (e.g., roaming UEs or non-roaming UEs) .

[0006] Various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure propose a solution for NF discovery, which can enable a session control function such as a P-CSCF to be discovered, e.g., via an NRF, based on UE / NW specific service configurations of the session control function.

[0031] The embodiments of the present disclosure are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that these embodiments are discussed only for the purpose of enabling those skilled persons in the art to better understand and thus implement the present disclosure, rather than suggesting any limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present disclosure should be or are in any single embodiment of the disclosure. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the described features, advantages, and characteristics of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One skilled in the relevant art will recognize that the disclosure may be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the disclosure.

[0032] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as new radio (NR) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network node in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , 4G, 4.5G, 5G communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0033] As used herein, the terms “first” , “second” and so forth refer to different elements. The singular forms “a” and “an” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” as used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components and the like, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof. The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on”. The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment” . The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment” . Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0034] 3GPP specifies that an NF instance may register its profile in an NRF, including the registration of the general parameters of the NF instance, together with a list of potential services exposed by the NF instance. For example, a P-CSCF may perform NRF registration with a parameter PcscfInfo including some information elements (IEs) configured to the P-CSCF. As an example, Table 1 gives the definition of type PcscfInfo, which corresponds to Table 6.1.6.2.53-1 in clause 6.1.6.2.53 of 3GPP technical specification (TS) 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 1

[0035] According to the contents in clause 6.2.3.2.3.1 of 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0, the GET operation may be used to retrieve a list of NF instances, and their offered services, currently registered in the NRF, satisfying a number of filter criteria, such as those NF instances offering a certain service name, or those NF instances of a given NF type (e.g., P-CSCF, etc. ) . As an example, Table 2 lists some uniform resource identifier (URI) query parameters supported by the GET method, and more details may be found in Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-1 at clause 6.2.3.2.3.1 of 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 2

[0036] As described in clause 5.16.3.11 “P-CSCF discovery and selection” of 3GPP TS 23.501 V19.1.0, P-CSCF selection functionality may be used by an SMF to select a P-CSCF for an IMS PDU session of a UE. The SMF can utilize an NRF to discover the P-CSCF instance (s) . The NRF may provide an Internet protocol (IP) address or a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of P-CSCF instance (s) to the SMF. The P-CSCF selection function in the SMF may select the P-CSCF instance (s) based on the available P-CSCF instances obtained from the NRF or based on the configured P-CSCF information in the SMF. If the SMF receives FQDN (s) from the NRF or is configured with FQDN (s) , the SMF can resolve these to IP addresses for sending to the UE in the PDU session response.

[0037] According to 3GPP TS 23.501 V19.1.0 and TS 29.510 V19.0.0, for an IMS session, the following factors may be considered by an SMF / home-session management function (H-SMF)  / anchor-session management function (A-SMF) for P-CSCF discovery and selection: - Single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) of the PDU session. - UE location information. - Local operator policies. - Availability of candidate P-CSCFs. - UE IP address. - Access type. - Proximity to location of selected user plane function (UPF) . - Selected data network name (DNN) .

[0038] When multiple P-CSCFs are deployed with different configurations to serve specific UEs / serving PLMNs, an SMF handling an IMS PDU session for a UE may not be able to discover the correct P-CSCF (s) to handle the IMS session. For example, the existing NRF discovery mechanism may not support P-CSCF selection based on the UE’s identity. In addition, a P-CSCF may not be selected, via the existing NRF discovery procedure, based on the serving network of the visited PLMN for a home-routed roaming IMS session, so it may not be possible to have a dedicated P-CSCF used for roaming IMS sessions to provide security separation with non-roaming traffics and specific monitoring for roaming sessions.

[0039] In order to address one or more issues above, various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure propose solutions to enable a session control function such as P-CSCF to be discovered for a UE, e.g., based on the session control function’s configuration about serving specific UEs and / or supporting specific serving PLMNs. Optionally, considering that the session control function can serve a large number of UEs, a session control function group identifier (which may be associated with a P-CSCF group serving a same set of users) may also be used and managed by an NRF to discover the correct session control function.

[0040] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, one or more new IEs may be added in PcscfInfo data type to allow a P-CSCF to register the supported UEs (optionally with a P-CSCF group identifier (ID) , etc. ) and / or serving PLMNs to an NRF. In an embodiment, the definition of the type PcscfInfo in Table 1 may be modified by adding some new IEs such as supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId and servingPlmns as given in Table 3. Table 3

[0041] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a P-CSCF (also referred to a P-CSCF instance) may perform NRF registration with PcscfInfo which may include one or more of the following new IEs: - supiRanges: indicating a list of ranges of SUPIs that can be served by the P-CSCF instance. - gpsiRanges: indicating a list of ranges of GPSIs that can be served by the P-CSCF instance. - groupId: an identity of a P-CSCF group that may be served by the P-CSCF instance. - servingPlmns: indicating a PLMN ID list of the serving network (e.g., for the roaming sessions) that the P-CSCF can support serving.

[0042] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, one or more new query parameters may be added into an NF query to support P-CSCF discovery with a UE ID and / or a serving PLMN ID and / or a P-CSCF group ID. In an embodiment, in addition to the query parameters as listed in Table 2, Table 4 further lists some new query parameters such as supi, gpsi, group-id-list and support-serving-plmn which may be used as the URI query parameters for P-CSCF discovery. Table 4

[0043] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, during a PDU session establishment procedure accessing from 4G / wireless-fidelity (WiFi)  / 5G, an SMF may select a P-CSCF for a UE based on a SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF group ID associated with the UE. The SMF may send an NF discovery request for the P-CSCF with one or more query parameters including the SUPI and / or the GPSI and / or the P-CSCF group ID to an NRF. In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, during a roaming PDU session establishment procedure accessing from 4G / 5G, if an SMF / H-SMF needs to select a P-CSCF for a UE based on a serving network (e.g., a serving PLMN, etc. ) and / or SUPI associated with the UE, the SMF / H-SMF may send an NF discovery request for the P-CSCF with one or more query parameters including information about the serving network (e.g., the parameter “support-serving-plmn” , etc. ) and / or the SUPI to a NRF. In response to the NF discovery request from the SMF, the NRF may return a P-CSCF list to the SMF. The P-CSCF list may include one or more P-CSCFs which can support the SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF Group ID and / or serving network PLMN associated with the UE and indicated in the NF discovery request from the SMF, and the SMF may select a proper P-CSCF for the UE accordingly.

[0044] When certain query parameters in the discovery request are not supported by the NRF, the NRF may ignore the unsupported query parameters and continue processing the request with the supported query parameters. The default logical relationship among the supported query parameters is logical “AND” , i.e., all the provided query parameters may need to be matched, with the exception of the “preferred-locality” , “ext-preferred-locality” , “preferred-nf-instances” , “preferred-tai” , “preferred-api-versions” , “preferred-full-plmn” , “preferred-collocated-nf-types” , “preferred-pgw-ind” , “preferred-analytics-delays” , “preferred-features” , “mbs-session-id” , “ind-com-with-del-disc” and “ind-com-wo-del-disc” query parameters, as described in clause 6.2.3.2.3.1 of 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0.

[0045] The NRF may support the Complex query expression as defined in 3GPP TS 29.501 V19.0.0 for the NF discovery service. If the “complexQuery” query parameter is included, then the logical relationship among the query parameters contained in “complexQuery” query parameter is as defined in 3GPP TS 29.571 V19.0.0. An NRF not supporting Complex query expression may reject an NF service discovery request including a complexQuery parameter, with a ProblemDetails IE including the cause attribute set to INVALID_QUERY_PARAM and the invalidParams attribute indicating the complexQuery parameter. This method may support the request data structures specified in Table 6.1.3.2.3.1-2 of 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0 and the response data structures and response codes specified in Table 6.1.3.2.3.1-3 of 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. As an example, Table 5 shows the data structures supported by the GET Response Body on this resource, which may correspond to Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-3 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 5

[0046] As another example, Table 6 shows the headers supported by the GET method on this endpoint, which may correspond to Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-4 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 6

[0047] As another example, Table 7 shows the headers supported by the 200 Response Code on this endpoint, which may correspond to Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-5 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 7

[0048] As another example, Table 8 shows the headers supported by the 307 Response Code on this endpoint, which may correspond to Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-6 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 8

[0049] As a further example, Table 9 shows the links supported by the 200 Response Code on this endpoint, which may correspond to Table 6.2.3.2.3.1-7 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 9

[0050] 3GPP defines the syntax of the supportedFeatures attribute in clause 5.2.2 of TS 29.571 V19.0.0. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, as to the features supported by the NFDiscovery service, one or more new features may be defined for the new query parameter (s) and the usage of supi and / or gpsi and / or group ID for P-CSCF discovery. Table 10 lists some features of supportedFeatures attribute used by a Nnrf_NFDiscovery service, which may correspond to Table 6.2.9-1 in 3GPP TS 29.510 V19.0.0. Table 10

[0051] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, for the new IE (s) such as supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId and servingPlmns in PcscfInfo data type for P-CSCF registration, the corresponding OpenAPI such as Nnrf_NFManagement application programming interface (API) may be implemented as below. Nnrf_NFManagement API ***************Text Skipped for Clarity ******************** ***************Text Skipped for Clarity ********************

[0052] In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, for the new query parameter (s) such as supi, gpsi, group-id-list and support-serving-plmn for P-CSCF discovery, the corresponding OpenAPI such as Nnrf_NFDiscovery API may be implemented as below. [0053] It can be appreciated that the names, representations and values of the IEs / parameters / attributes (e.g., supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns, supi, gpsi, group-id-list and support-serving-plmn, etc. ) used herein are exemplary, and other names, representations and values may also be used to indicate the same or similar information and may also be applicable to various exemplary embodiments according to the present disclosure.

[0054] Many advantages may be achieved by applying the proposed solutions. For example, the proposed solutions can enable an SMF to support P-CSCF selection based on a UE associated SUPI / GPSI / P-CSCF Group ID for a PDU session from 5G / 4G / WiFi access. In addition, the proposed solutions can enable an H-SMF to support P-CSCF selection based on a UE associated SUPI / GPSI / P-CSCF Group ID / serving network PLMN for a roaming session from 5G / 4G access.

[0055] More details of the proposed solutions of the present disclosure will be described below in connection with various exemplary embodiments. It can be appreciated that although some embodiments are described with respect to 4G and 5G networks, various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure may be applicable to different communication scenarios where an enhancement may be needed for P-CSCF discovery and selection.

[0056] Fig. 1A is a diagram illustrating an exemplary P-CSCF selection procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For PDU session establishment access from 5G in SMF, as shown in Fig. 1A, the P-CSCF selection procedure during 5G home-routed roaming PDU session establishment may be enhanced by performing the following operations: 1: P-CSCF-1 may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-1 (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to a home-network repository function (H-NRF) , so as to register P-CSCF-1 to the H-NRF. 2: The H-NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-1. 3: P-CSCF-2 may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-2 (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the H-NRF, so as to register P-CSCF-2 to the H-NRF. 4: The H-NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-2. 5: P-CSCF-n (where for the scenario in Fig. 1A, n is an integer equal to or greater than 3; and more generally, n is any index or identifier which may be used to indicate a P-CSCF registered to an NRF) may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-n (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the H-NRF, so as to register P-CSCF-n to the H-NRF. 6: The H-NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-n. == UE Initiated PDU Session Establishment == 7: An access and mobility management function (AMF) may transmit a Nsmf_PDUSession_CreateSMContext Request (N1 PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT REQUEST (request P-CSCF) to a visit-session management function (V-SMF) . 8: The V-SMF may transmit a Nsmf_PDUSession_CreateSMContext Response to the AMF. 9: The V-SMF may transmit a packet forwarding control protocol (PFCP) Session Establishment Request to a visit-user plane function (V-UPF) . 10: The V-UPF may transmit a PFCP Session Establishment Response to the V-SMF. 11: The V-SMF may transmit a Nsmf_PDUSession_Create Request to an H-SMF. 12: The H-SMF may transmit a Nnrf_NFDiscovery_Request (discover P-CSCF, query parameter: SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF GroupId and / or support-serving-plmn) to the H-NRF. It is noted that the parameters “SUPI” , “GPSI” , “P-CSCF GroupId” and “support-serving-plmn” in the Nnrf_NFDiscovery_Request may correspond to “supi” , “gpsi” , “group-id-list” and “support-serving-plmn” as listed in Table 4, respectively. 13: The H-NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFDiscovery Response (pcscf 1 / n-info (supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the H-SMF. In an embodiment, the H-SMF may select P-CSCF-1 and P-CSCF-2 based on a UE associated SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF group ID and / or serving network. 14: The H-SMF may perform a Nudm_SubscriberDataManagement_Get Procedure with a home-unified data management (H-UDM) . 15: The H-SMF may transmit a Nnrf_NFDiscovery_Request for policy charging function (PCF) to the H-NRF and receive a Nnrf_NFDiscovery_Response for PCF from the H-NRF. 16: The H-SMF may transmit a Npcf_SMPolicyControl_Create Request to a home-policy charging function (H-PCF) and receive a Npcf_SMPolicyControl_Create Response from the H-PCF. 17: The H-SMF may transmit a PFCP Session Establishment Request to a home-user plane function (H-UPF) and receive a PFCP Session Establishment Response from the H-UPF. 18: The H-SMF may transmit a Nudm_UECM_Registration Request to the H-UDM and receive a Nudm_UECM_Registration Response from the H-UDM. 19: The H-SMF may transmit a Nsmf_PDUSession_Create Response (N1 PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT ACCEPT (P-CSCF-1, P-CSCF-2) ) to the V-SMF.

[0057] Fig. 1B is a diagram illustrating an exemplary P-CSCF selection procedure according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. For PDN connection establishment access from 4G / WiFi in SMF, as shown in Fig. 1B, the P-CSCF selection procedure during 4G PDN connection establishment may be enhanced by performing the following operations: 1: P-CSCF-1 may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-1 (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to an NRF, so as to register P-CSCF-1 to the NRF. 2: The NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-1. 3: P-CSCF-2 may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-2 (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the NRF, so as to register P-CSCF-2 to the NRF. 4: The NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-2. 5: P-CSCF-n (where for the scenario in Fig. 1B, n is an integer equal to or greater than 3; and more generally, n is any index or identifier which may be used to indicate a P-CSCF registered to an NRF) may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request (P-CSCF-n (pcscfInfo: supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the NRF, so as to register P-CSCF-n to the NRF. 6: The NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response to P-CSCF-n. == UE Initiated PDN Connection Establishment == 7: A mobility management entity (MME) may transmit a Create Session Request (IMS-APN, IMSI, Serving Network, PCO: request P-CSCF) to a serving gateway-control (SGW-C) . 8: The SGW-C may transmit a Create Session Request (IMS-APN, IMSI, Serving Network, PCO: request P-CSCF) to an SMF. 9: The SMF may transmit a Nnrf_NFDiscovery_Request (discover P-CSCF, query parameter: SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF GroupId and / or support-serving-plmn) to the NRF. 10: The NRF may transmit a Nnrf_NFDiscovery Response (pcscf 1 / n-info (supiRanges, gpsiRanges, groupId, servingPlmns) ) to the SMF. In an embodiment, the SMF may select P-CSCF-1 and P-CSCF-2 based on a UE associated SUPI and / or GPSI and / or P-CSCF group ID and / or serving network. 11: The SMF may perform an NRF Discovery for PCF with the NRF. 12: The SMF may transmit a Npcf_SMPolicyControl_Create Request to a PCF and receive a Npcf_SMPolicyControl_Create Response from the PCF. 13: The SMF may transmit a PFCP Session Establishment Request to UPF-1. 14: UPF-1 may transmit a PFCP Session Establishment Response to the SMF. 15: The SMF may transmit a Create Session Response (P-CSCF-1 and P-CSCF-2) to the SGW-C. 16: The SGW-C may transmit a Create Session Response (P-CSCF-1 and P-CSCF-2) to the MME.

[0058] It can be appreciated that although the P-CSCF selection procedure shown in Fig. 1B is described with respect to the scenario of 4G access, the similar P-CSCF selection procedure may also applicable to the scenario of WiFi access.

[0059] It also can be appreciated that network elements and signaling messages shown in Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B are just as examples, and more or less alternative network elements and signaling messages may be involved in the P-CSCF selection procedure according to various embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0060] It is noted that some embodiments of the present disclosure are mainly described in relation to 4G / 5G specifications being used as non-limiting examples for certain exemplary network configurations and system deployments. As such, the description of exemplary embodiments given herein specifically refers to terminology which is directly related thereto. Such terminology is only used in the context of the presented non-limiting examples and embodiments, and does naturally not limit the present disclosure in any way. Rather, any other system configuration or radio technologies may equally be utilized as long as exemplary embodiments described herein are applicable.

[0061] Fig. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a method 200 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 200 illustrated in Fig. 2 may be performed by a first network node or an apparatus communicatively coupled to the first network node. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the first network node may be configured to implement an SMF or act as any other suitable network entity which may be configured to perform session management for one or more terminal devices (e.g., UEs, etc. ) .

[0065] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the information per session control function may comprise one or more of the following parameters: a list of SUPI ranges (e.g., the parameter “supiRanges” as described with respect to Table 3) associated with the set of terminal devices which the corresponding session control function supports serving; a list of GPSI ranges (e.g., the parameter “gpsiRanges” as described with respect to Table 3) associated with the set of terminal devices which the corresponding session control function supports serving; an identifier (e.g., the parameter “groupId” as described with respect to Table 3) of the at least one session control function group to which the corresponding session control function belongs; and a list of identifiers (e.g., the parameter “servingPlmns” as described with respect to Table 3) of the set of the serving networks which the corresponding session control function supports serving.

[0066] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the discovery response may comprise the list of the session control functions. In an embodiment, information per candidate session control function may indicate one or more of: at least one session control function group identifier of the one or more session control function group identifiers indicated by the discovery request; and a list of identifiers of a set of serving networks which comprise the identifier of the serving network indicated in the discovery request.

[0067] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the information per session control function for the list of candidate session control functions may further indicate a set of terminal devices which comprise the terminal device.

[0068] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the first network node may select a session control function for the terminal device from the list of candidate session control functions, according to the information per candidate session control function comprised in the discovery request. In an embodiment, the session control function may be a P-CSCF.

[0069] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the first network node may be configured to implement an SMF. In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, the second network node may be configured to implement an NRF.

[0070] Fig. 3 is a flowchart illustrating a method 300 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 300 illustrated in Fig. 3 may be performed by a second network node or an apparatus communicatively coupled to the second network node. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the second network node may be configured to implement an NRF or act as any other suitable network entity which may be configured to store registration information and / or profiles of one or more NFs.

[0071] According to the exemplary method 300 illustrated in Fig. 3, the second network node may receive a discovery request (e.g., the Nnrf_NFDiscovery Request as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) for a list of candidate session control functions (e.g., P-CSCF-1 and P-CSCF-2 as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) for a terminal device from a first network node (e.g., the first network node as described with respect to Fig. 2) in a serving network establishing a PDU session for the terminal device, as shown in block 302. The session control function may control a multimedia session for the terminal device. The discovery request may indicate at least one of one or more session control function group identifies (e.g., identifiers of one or more P-CSCF groups, etc. ) and an identifier of the serving network (e.g., an identifier of the serving PLMN, etc. ) of the terminal device. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the second network node may transmit a discovery response (e.g., the Nnrf_NFDiscovery Response as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) to the first network node, as shown in block 304. The discovery response may indicate the list of the session control functions discovered according to the discovery request.

[0072] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the discovery request for the list of candidate session control functions according to the method 300 may correspond to the discovery request for the list of candidate session control functions according to the method 200. Thus, the discovery request for the list of candidate session control functions as described with respect to Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 may have the same or similar contents and / or feature elements. Similarly, in accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the discovery response to the discovery request for the list of the session control functions as described with respect to Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 may have the same or similar contents and / or feature elements.

[0073] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the list of the session control functions may be discovered based at least in part on information per session control function stored at the second network node. In an embodiment, the information per session control function according to the method 300 may correspond to the information per session control function according to the method 200. Thus, the information per session control function as described with respect to Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 may have the same or similar contents and / or feature elements.

[0075] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the second network node may transmit a register response (e.g., the Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Response as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) to the third network node. In an embodiment, the register response may indicate that the corresponding session control function is registered to the second network node.

[0076] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the second network node may support to use the information per session control function for the list of the candidate session control function to discover the list of candidate session control functions (e.g., the parameter “Enh-PCSCF-Disc” as described with respect to Table 10) .

[0077] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the first network node may be configured to implement an SMF. In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, the second network node may be configured to implement an NRF. In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, the third network node may be configured to implement a P-CSCF.

[0078] Fig. 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method 400 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 400 illustrated in Fig. 4 may be performed by a third network node or an apparatus communicatively coupled to the third network node. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the third network node may be configured to implement a P-CSCF or act as any other suitable network entity which may be configured to provide a session control service.

[0079] According to the exemplary method 400 illustrated in Fig. 4, the third network node may transmit a register request (e.g., the Nnrf_NFManagement_NFRegister Request as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) for a corresponding session control function (e.g., P-CSCF-1, P-CSCF-2, and P-CSCF-n as described with respect to Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) to a second network node (e.g., the second network node as described with respect to Fig. 3) , as shown in block 402. The register request may comprise information per session control function for the corresponding session control function (e.g., the parameter “pcscfInfo” as described with respect to Table 3, Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B) . In an embodiment, the information per session control function may indicate one or more of: a set of terminal devices which the corresponding session control function may support serving; at least one session control function group (e.g., one or more P-CSCF groups, etc. ) to which the corresponding session control function belongs; and a set of serving networks (e.g., one or more serving PLMNs, etc. ) which the corresponding session control function may support serving.

[0080] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the third network node may optionally receive a register response from the second network node, as shown in block 404. In an embodiment, the register response may indicate that the corresponding session control function is registered to the second network node. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the session control function may be a P-CSCF.

[0081] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the register request transmitted by the third network node according to the method 400 may correspond to the register request received by the second network node according to the method 300. Thus, the register request as described with respect to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 may have the same or similar contents and / or feature elements. Similarly, in accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the register response as described with respect to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 may have the same or similar contents and / or feature elements.

[0082] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the information per session control function may comprise one or more of the following parameters: a list of SUPI ranges (e.g., the parameter “supiRanges” as described with respect to Table 3) associated with the a set of terminal devices which the corresponding session control function supports serving; a list of GPSI ranges (e.g., the parameter “gpsiRanges” as described with respect to Table 3) associated with the set of terminal devices which the corresponding session control function supports serving; an identifier (e.g., the parameter “groupId” as described with respect to Table 3) of the at least one session control function group to which the corresponding session control function belongs; and a list of identifiers (e.g., the parameter “servingPlmns” as described with respect to Table 3) of the set of the serving networks which the corresponding session control function supports serving.

[0083] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the second network node may be configured to implement an NRF. In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, the third network node may be configured to implement a P-CSCF.

[0084] The various blocks shown in Fig. 2-Fig. 4 may be viewed as method steps, and / or as operations that result from operation of computer program code, and / or as a plurality of coupled logic circuit elements constructed to carry out the associated function (s) . The schematic flow chart diagrams described above are generally set forth as logical flow chart diagrams. As such, the depicted order and labeled steps are indicative of specific embodiments of the presented methods. Other steps and methods may be conceived that are equivalent in function, logic, or effect to one or more steps, or portions thereof, of the illustrated methods. Additionally, the order in which a particular method occurs may or may not strictly adhere to the order of the corresponding steps shown.

[0085] It can be appreciated that the network node according to various embodiments can be implemented either as a network element and / or a network entity on a dedicated hardware, as a software instance running on a dedicated hardware, or as a virtualized function instantiated on an appropriate platform, e.g., on a cloud infrastructure.
