[0002] The present invention relates to an oral care composition for use in the treatment of dry mouth.
[0003] Xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, is a condition where the salivary glands don't produce enough saliva to keep the mouth properly moist. This can lead to discomfort and various oral health problems. Dry mouth is typically a symptom of underlying conditions rather than a disease on its own.
[0004] The symptoms of xerostomia include a persistent dry and sticky feeling in the mouth and throat, difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking, and a burning or tingling sensation in the mouth, particularly on the tongue.

Further, taste receptors are quickly saturated and further intake of the flavored gel does not reactivate the saliva production stimulation because of the saturation of the receptors. Accordingly, the user should delay one intake from another one to keep the saliva production stimulation effect. Additionally, the flavors used in these gels may not be appealing to everyone. Strong or tangy flavors, such as sour or minty ones, can be unpleasant for some users, making it uncomfortable and reducing their willingness to use the product regularly.

Over time, repeated exposure to the same flavor can lead to taste fatigue, where users grow tired of the flavor, which may further decrease consistent use. However, although phosphate may qualify as a pH buffering agent, there is no real buffering control in this composition, at least for a pH close to the neutrality. WO 2023 / 104086 discloses oral care compositions to treat local inflammations, based on hyaluronates and further comprising glycerin, xylitol, and 0.8% of an anionic polymeric thickening agent. Optional ingredients are also listed. Water in excess of 60 wt% is considered to be detrimental for the stability of the composition.
[0013] US 2024 / 099957 discloses oral gels based on hyaluronic acid for improved wound healing further comprising carbomer, glycerin, xylitol, peg-300, sodium hyaluronate and sodium pyrophosphate as chelatant. Here again, there is no pH buffering agent.

Here again, although citric acid / citrate may inherently qualify as a buffering agent, the buffering properties at neutral pH are weak.
[0015] WO 2024 / 042191 discloses an oral care composition having a certain viscosity driven by hyaluronic acid and possibly a second water insoluble polymer in combination with anti-inflammatory components and anti-oxidants such as catechins. Such composition does not comprise thickening agents such as gums.
[0016] The present invention encounters to solve at least a part of these drawbacks by providing an oral care composition offering both immediate and prolonged relief from dry mouth symptoms without harming the environment.
[0017] To solve this problem, it is provided according to the present invention, an oral care composition for use in the treatment of dry mouth as mentioned in the beginning, comprising at least one thickening agent in an amount of 0.1 to 15 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, preferably 0.5 to 10 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, more preferably 0.9 to 5 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, a pH buffering agent in an amount of 0.5 to 2 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, at least two humectants in an amount of 15 to 30 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, water in an amount of 66.5 to 83.6 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, under the form of a gel.
[0018] It has been indeed surprisingly identified that the aforementioned composition allows an immediate and prolonged relief from dry mouth symptoms. Without being bound precisely to any theory, it is thought that the present invention allows a very good synergy between the thickening agent(s) and the high amount of humectants, which is further improved by the pH buffering agent and that the gel structure of the oral care composition is protected against saliva enzymes, allowing the long lasting effect.
[0019] Indeed, pH buffering agent has a double role of stabilizing the gel structure of the oral care composition and maintaining a balanced pH in the mouth. This is important since the mouth pH becomes more acidic when saliva production is reduced. By neutralizing acidity, the buffering agent not only creates a more comfortable environment and stabilizes the gel structure but also protects against the harmful effects of a dry, acidic mouth, such as tooth decay and irritation. An oral care composition for use in the treatment of dry mouth comprising at least one thickening agent in an amount of 0.1 to 15 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, preferably 0.5 to 10 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, more preferably 0.9 to 5 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, a pH buffering agent in an amount of 0.5 to 2 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, at least two humectants in an amount of 15 to 30 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, water in an amount of 66.5 to 83.6 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, under the form of a gel.
2. The oral care composition for use according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one thickening agent is chosen in the group comprising carbomers, natural gums, modified starch, sodium alginate, pectin, gelatin and mixtures thereof.
3. The oral care composition for use according to claim 2, wherein the carbomers are carboxypolymethylene, preferably an acrylic polymer, preferably an acrylic homopolymer, preferably a Carbopol®, more preferably Carbopol® 974 (CAS 151687-96-6).
4. The oral care composition for use according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the natural gum is chosen in the group comprising arabic gum, xanthan gum, guar gum, carob bean gum, gellan gum, gum tragacanth.
5. The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims comprising at least a natural gum and at least a carbomer.
6. The oral care composition for use according to claim 5, wherein the weight ratio between the carbomer and the natural gum(s) (preferably tragacanth, and / or arabic gum) is comprised between 0.5 (weight carbomer: weight natural gum(s)) and 2.
7. The oral care composition for use according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the carbomer is an acrylic homopolymer, preferably a Carbopol®, more preferably Carbopol® 974 (CAS 151687-96-6), and the gum is gum tragacanth.
8. The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said at least one thickening agent comprises 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 different thickening agents, in a total amount corresponding to the amount of said at least one thickening agent.
9. The oral care composition for use according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pH buffering agent is tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane.
10. The oral care composition for use according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pH is comprised between 6.8 and 7.4.1 1. The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims, further comprising a chelating agent, preferably sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.
12. The oral care composition for use according to claim 1 1 , wherein the chelating agent is present in an amount from 0,05 to 0,5 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition, and wherein water is present in an amount of 67 to 83.55 wt% based on the weight of the oral care composition.
13. The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims, comprising at least two humectants, wherein the at least two humectants are chosen in the group comprising hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, glycerin, xylitol, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol, lactic acid, mono and di glyceride, tremella fuciformis.
14. The oral care composition for use according to claim 1213 wherein the at least two humectants are a mixture of hyaluronic acid, xylitol, propylene glycol and glycerin.

The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims, further comprising one or more additive, preferably selected from the group consisting of an aroma, a preservative and / or a plant extract, preferably chosen in the group comprising chamomile extract, ratanhia extract, clove essential oil, aloe vera, licorice root extract, calendula extract, peppermint extract, sage extract, slippery elm, marshmallow root extract, green tea extract, honey extract, lemon extract, citric acid, sorbic acid, parabens, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, sorbitan caprylate, caprylyl glycol, 1 ,2-hexanediol, sodium benzoate, chlorhexidine, sodium methylparaben.
16. The oral care composition for use according to any of the preceding claims, packaged in a liquid single dose sachet.
17. The oral care composition for use according to claim 16, wherein the liquid single dose sachet is packaged with a series of liquid single dose sachet in a box.
18. A box comprising a set of the single liquid dose sachets of claim 18.
19. A method to improve oral health comprising applying an effective amount of the oral care composition described in any of the claims 1 to 15 to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof, wherein the method is effective to treat dry mouth.
20. The oral care composition according to any of the preceding claims 1 to 15 for use in the treatment of dry mouth.
