Description

ENERGY TRANSFER SIGNALS COMPRISING AN ACTIVITY MODE SWITCHING CODETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to energy transfer signals comprising an activity mode switching code. Furthermore, embodiments of the invention also relate to first and second communication devices, corresponding methods and a computer program.BACKGROUND

[0002] Most of the existing wireless communication devices are powered by a battery, which needs to be recharged or replaced manually. Nevertheless, batteryless devices are also used, especially in a wide range of automation and digitalization in various industries. In either case, low power operations are critical, hence the multiple efforts to support device energy savings and improve the energy efficiency of networks, in general.

[0003] One of the main features that were supported in 3GPP 5G new radio (NR) , for the purpose of device energy savings, is the dual operation of dual and main receivers.

[0004] The goal of a lower power receiver is to enable triggered wake-up of user equipments (UEs) in an energy efficient manner. Indeed, the power consumption of a UE depends primarily on the configured length of wake-up periods. Since there is a tradeoff between wake-up period and latency, achieving the desired key performance indicators (KPIs) with long sleep periods is rather challenging.

[0005] In order to achieve triggered wake-up and hence reap device power savings, low power receiver is used, wherein the low power receiver is used to monitor low power wake-up signal which triggers the main receiver of the UE.SUMMARY

[0006] An objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution which mitigates or solves the drawbacks and problems of conventional solutions.

[0007] Another objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution for energy efficient switching of activity mode.

[0008] The above and further objectives are solved by the subject matter of the independent claims.

[0009] Further embodiments of the invention can be found in the dependent claims.

[0010] According to a first aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a first communication device configured to:

[0011] receive two or more energy transfer signals from two or more second communication devices when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal comprising an activity mode switching code;

[0012] harvest energy from the two or more energy transfer signals; and

[0013] switch from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code of the two or more energy transfer signals.

[0014] Thus, each energy transfer signal comprises the same activity mode switching code.

[0015] An advantage of the first communication device according to the first aspect is that a switch in the activity mode can be triggered in an energy efficient manner. Indeed, a first communication device would monitor energy transfer signals, received from multiple second communication devices, enabling to both monitor for activity switching trigger and to harvest energy from a signal that is designed for that purpose. The use of embedded activity mode switching codes enables to handle multiple first communication devices and to handle multiple possible activity modes for a given first communication device. The detection of the activity mode switching code can be performed in a very low power manner e.g., based on envelope detection pattern detection in harvested energy. Hence, most of the active radio frequency components of the first communication device can be powered off.

[0016] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first activity mode is a sleep mode of the first communication device, the second activity mode is an active mode of the first communication device, and the activity mode switching code is a wake code.

[0017] An advantage with this implementation form is that multiple activity modes can be supported for a given first communication device, with the minimum number being two possible modes, which are active and sleep modes. Multiple sleep modes may be considered in the concept of sleep mode including micro, light and deep sleep modes. Different activity modes may include different stages of the activation of the transceiver, and different sets of parameters for the transceivers e.g., different active bandwidth parts for transmit and receiver antennas of the first communication device.

[0018] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the two or more energy transfer signals are amplitude modulated reference signals comprising the same activity mode switching code.

[0019] An advantage with this implementation form is that the detection of the activity mode switching code can be performed in a low power manner through envelope detection or pattern matching in the harvested energy. The detection of the activity mode switching code based on energy transfer signals from multiple second communication devices enables to leverage spatial diversity. Thereby, reducing false alarm probability i.e., wrong detection of the activity switching code.

[0020] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the activity mode switching code is a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of the amplitude modulated reference signals.

[0021] An advantage with this implementation form is that different possible activity mode switching codes detection methods can be used. For example, pattern monitoring based on the harvested energy over time or cumulative harvested energy over time can be implemented.

[0022] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0023] detect the activity mode switching code based on a comparison between a first pattern of the harvested energy from the two or more energy harvesting signals and a second pattern of the activity mode switching code.

[0024] An advantage with this implementation form is that using pattern in the harvested energy reduces the need for tight frequency and time synchronization and channel state knowledge. Consequently, activity switching code detection can be performed with minimum energy expenditure. Additionally, since an energy harvesting circuit is used at the first communication device, for activity mode switching code detection, the consumed energy will at least partially be compensated.

[0025] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first pattern of the harvested energy is a cumulative sum or an average of the harvested energy.

[0026] An advantage with this implementation form is that activity switching code detection can be implemented with low complexity and in a low power consumption manner.

[0027] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the cumulative sum is based on a duration of the activity mode switching code.

[0028] An advantage with this implementation form is that the duration of the activity mode switching code can be used as a parameter to adapt the trade-off between activity mode switching latency and activity mode switching code detection accuracy.

[0029] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0030] receive a first control message indicating any of: an activity mode switching code detection period, an activity mode switching code duration, and a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of an amplitude modulated reference signal comprising the activity mode switching code.

[0031] An advantage with this implementation form is that all parameters needed for the detection of the activity mode switching code can be provided to the first communication device in system information blocks within a broadcast channel, or in RRC configuration or reconfiguration procedures.

[0032] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0033] receive the first control message in a broadcast channel or in a system information block.

[0034] An advantage with this implementation form is that the first communication device can start the detection of the activity mode switching code before RRC configuration or initiating access to the network.

[0035] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0036] receive a second control message indicating an activation of switching from the first activity mode to the second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code.

[0037] An advantage with this implementation form is that activity mode switching code detection can be activated and deactivated dynamically by the network. This signaling also enables to dynamically adapting the transmission of the energy transfer signals over time.

[0038] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0039] perform a time or a frequency synchronization based on the two or more energy transfer signals.

[0040] An advantage with this implementation form is that time or frequency synchronization can be performed before the detection of synchronization dedicated reference signals such as SSB used for synchronization by the network. This can be used as an additional synchronization mechanism to augment the existing one and provide low power time and frequency tracking possibilities.

[0041] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0042] perform a radio resource management measurement based on the two or more energy transfer signals.

[0043] An advantage with this implementation form is that radio resource management measurement, e.g., for cell search or handovers, can be performed in a low power consumption manner using the energy transfer signals.

[0044] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is configured to:

[0045] perform a channel estimation based on the two or more energy transfer signals.

[0046] An advantage with this implementation form is that channels state information can be obtained using the energy transfer signals before the measurement of CSI-RS or even before the configuration of CSI-RS, enabling more accurate link adaptation during initial access and after bandwidth part or carrier switching.

[0047] In an implementation form of a first communication device according to the first aspect, the first communication device is a client device.

[0048] An advantage with this implementation form is that power savings are achieved since the activity time of the more power-hungry parts of the transceiver of the client device is minimized.

[0049] According to a second aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a second communication device configured to:

[0050] transmit an energy transfer signal comprising an activity mode switching code for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code.

[0051] An advantage of the second communication device according to the second aspect is that a switch in the activity mode can be triggered in an energy efficient manner.

[0052] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the energy transfer signal is an amplitude modulated reference signals comprising the activity mode switching code.

[0053] An advantage with this implementation form is that the detection of the activity mode switching code can be performed in a low power manner through envelope detection or pattern matching in the harvested energy.

[0054] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the activity mode switching code is a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of the amplitude modulated reference signals.

[0055] An advantage with this implementation form is that different possible activity mode switching codes detection methods can be used. For example, pattern monitoring based on the harvested energy over time or cumulative harvested energy over time can be implemented.

[0056] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the second communication device is configured to:

[0057] transmit a first control message indicating any of: an activity mode switching code detection period, an activity mode switching code duration, and a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of an amplitude modulated reference signal comprising the activity mode switching code.

[0058] An advantage with this implementation form is that all parameters needed for the detection of the activity mode switching code can be provided to the first communication device in system information blocks within a broadcast channel, or in RRC configuration or reconfiguration procedures.

[0059] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the second communication device is configured to:

[0060] transmit the first control message in a broadcast channel or in a system information block.

[0061] An advantage with this implementation form is that the first communication device can start the detection of the activity mode switching code before RRC configuration or initiating access to the network.

[0062] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the second communication device is configured to:

[0063] transmit a second control message indicating an activation of switching from the first activity mode to the second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code.

[0064] An advantage with this implementation form is that activity mode switching code detection can be activated and deactivated dynamically by the network. This signaling also enables to dynamically adapting the transmission of the energy transfer signals over time.

[0065] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the second communication device is configured to:

[0066] acquire a sensing information of an object based on a reflection of the transmitted energy transfer signals.

[0067] An advantage with this implementation form is that the energy transfer signals used to trigger activity mode switching, can also be used as a sensing signal. The structure of the energy transfer signal with predefined power offsets enables it to have good properties as a radar signal. Hence, the reflections of the energy transfer signal, conveying the activity mode switching code, can be used to detect objects, impacting radio propagation in a covered area.

[0068] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the sensing information comprises any of: a position, a speed, and a moving direction of the object.

[0069] An advantage with this implementation form is that the energy transfer signals can be used to performing sensing and collect mobility information on objects impacting radio propagation within a covered area. This information can then be used to inform air interface operations, such as beam failure avoidance.

[0070] In an implementation form of a second communication device according to the second aspect, the second communication device is a network access node.

[0071] According to a third aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a method for a first communication device, the method comprises:

[0072] receiving two or more energy transfer signals from two or more second communication devices when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal comprising an activity mode switching code;

[0073] harvesting energy from the two or more energy transfer signals; and

[0074] switching from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code of the two or more energy transfer signals.

[0075] The method according to the third aspect can be extended into implementation forms corresponding to the implementation forms of the first communication device according to the first aspect. Hence, an implementation form of the method comprises the feature (s) of the corresponding implementation form of the first communication device.

[0076] The advantages of the methods according to the third aspect are the same as those for the corresponding implementation forms of the first communication device according to the first aspect.

[0077] According to a fourth aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a method for a second communication device, the method comprises:

[0078] transmitting an energy transfer signal comprising an activity mode switching code for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code.

[0079] The method according to the fourth aspect can be extended into implementation forms corresponding to the implementation forms of the second communication device according to the second aspect. Hence, an implementation form of the method comprises the feature (s) of the corresponding implementation form of the second communication device.

[0080] The advantages of the methods according to the fourth aspect are the same as those for the corresponding implementation forms of the second communication device according to the second aspect.

[0081] Embodiments of the invention also relate to a computer program, characterized in program code, which when run by at least one processor causes the at least one processor to execute any method according to embodiments of the invention. Further, embodiments of the invention also relate to a computer program product comprising a computer readable medium and the mentioned computer program, wherein the computer program is included in the computer readable medium, and may comprises one or more from the group of: read-only memory (ROM) , programmable ROM (PROM) , erasable PROM (EPROM) , flash memory, electrically erasable PROM (EEPROM) , hard disk drive, etc.

[0092] 3GPP NR is more power-hungry than long term evolution (LTE) , when it comes to physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring and low throughput scenarios. The power consumption in the UE is dependent on multiple key factors, such as sleep mode duration, power amplifier (PA) efficiency, number of radio frequency (RF)  / baseband paths / branches, channel bandwidth, channel processing latency / complexity, PDCCH monitoring configuration, among others.

[0093] In the connected discontinuous reception (CDRX) framework, other than PDCCH monitoring, the UE needs to perform a number of periodic activities, during the CDRX ON period, including reference signal measurements for channel state information (CSI) reporting, beam management and pathloss tracking for power control. These measurements are critical to guarantee reliable link between the UE and network node, in addition to meeting service KPIs.

[0094] Several conventional solutions have been proposed for energy saving, which mainly are based on low power receiver. The goal of the lower power receiver is to enable triggered UE wake-up, in an energy efficient manner. The study on low power receiver showed a high potential in power savings compared to baselines. Nevertheless, further enhancements can be achieved since low power receiver still uses power hungry receiver steps such as mixing.

[0095] For the above reasons a solution is herein disclosed for energy efficient switching of activity mode involving first and second communication devices.

[0096] Fig. 1 shows a first communication device 100 according to an embodiment of the invention. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the first communication device 100 comprises a processor 102, a transceiver 104 and a memory 106. The processor 102 is coupled to the transceiver 104 and the memory 106 by communication means 108 known in the art. The first communication device 100 may be configured for wireless and / or wired communications in a communication system. The wireless communication capability may be provided with an antenna or antenna array 110 coupled to the transceiver 104, while the wired communication capability may be provided with a wired communication interface 112 e.g., coupled to the transceiver 104.

[0097] The processor 102 may be referred to as one or more general-purpose central processing units (CPUs) , one or more digital signal processors (DSPs) , one or more application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , one or more field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) , one or more programmable logic devices, one or more discrete gates, one or more transistor logic devices, one or more discrete hardware components, or one or more chipsets. The memory 106 may be a read-only memory, a random access memory (RAM) , or a non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) . The transceiver 104 may be a transceiver circuit, a power controller, or an interface providing capability to communicate with other communication modules or communication devices, such as network nodes and network servers. The transceiver 104, memory 106 and / or processor 102 may be implemented in separate chipsets or may be implemented in a common chipset. That the first communication device 100 is configured to perform certain actions can in this disclosure be understood to mean that the first communication device 100 comprises suitable means and devices, such as e.g., the processor 102 and the transceiver 104, configured to perform the actions.

[0098] According to embodiments of the invention the first communication device 100 is configured to: receive two or more energy transfer signals 530 from two or more second communication devices 300 when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532; harvest energy from the two or more energy transfer signals 530; and switch from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532 of the two or more energy transfer signals 530.

[0099] Furthermore, in an embodiment of the invention, the first communication device 100 comprises a transceiver configured to receive two or more energy transfer signals 530 from two or more second communication devices 300 when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532. The first communication device 100 comprises a processor configured to: harvest energy from the two or more energy transfer signals 530; and switch from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532 of the two or more energy transfer signals 530.

[0100] Moreover, in yet another embodiment of the invention, the first communication device 100 for a communication system 500 comprises a processor and a memory having computer readable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: receive two or more energy transfer signals 530 from two or more second communication devices 300 when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532; harvest energy from the two or more energy transfer signals 530; and switch from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532 of the two or more energy transfer signals 530.

[0101] Fig. 2 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 200 which may be executed in a first communication device 100, such as the one shown in Fig. 1. The method 200 comprises: receiving 202 two or more energy transfer signals 530 from two or more second communication devices 300 when being configured in a first activity mode, each energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532; harvesting 204 energy from the two or more energy transfer signals 530; and switching 206 from the first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532 of the two or more energy transfer signals 530.

[0102] Fig. 3 shows a second communication device 300 according to an embodiment of the invention. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the second communication device 300 comprises a processor 302, a transceiver 304 and a memory 306. The processor 302 is coupled to the transceiver 304 and the memory 306 by communication means 308 known in the art. The second communication device 300 may be configured for wireless and / or wired communications in a communication system. The wireless communication capability may be provided with an antenna or antenna array 310 coupled to the transceiver 304, while the wired communication capability may be provided with a wired communication interface 312 e.g., coupled to the transceiver 304.

[0103] The processor 302 may be referred to as one or more general-purpose CPUs, one or more DSPs, one or more ASICs, one or more FPGAs, one or more programmable logic devices, one or more discrete gates, one or more transistor logic devices, one or more discrete hardware components, one or more chipsets. The memory 306 may be a read-only memory, a RAM, or a NVRAM. The transceiver 304 may be a transceiver circuit, a power controller, or an interface providing capability to communicate with other communication modules or communication devices. The transceiver 304, the memory 306 and / or the processor 302 may be implemented in separate chipsets or may be implemented in a common chipset. That the second communication device 300 is configured to perform certain actions can in this disclosure be understood to mean that the second communication device 300 comprises suitable means and devices, such as e.g., the processor 302 and the transceiver 304, configured to perform the actions.

[0104] According to embodiments of the invention the second communication device 300 is configured to transmit an energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532 for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0105] Furthermore, in an embodiment of the invention, the second communication device 300 comprises a transceiver configured to transmit an energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532 for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0106] Moreover, in yet another embodiment of the invention, the second communication device 300 for a communication system 500 comprises a processor and a memory having computer readable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to transmit an energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532 for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0107] Fig. 4 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 400 which may be executed in a second communication device 300, such as the one shown in Fig. 3. The method 400 comprises transmitting 402 an energy transfer signal 530 comprising an activity mode switching code 532 for switching from a first activity mode to a second activity mode upon detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0108] Fig. 5 shows a communication system or a communication network 500 according to an embodiment of the invention. The communication system 500 in the disclosed embodiment comprises a first communication device 100 and two second communication devices 300 configured to communicate and operate in the communication system 500. For simplicity, the shown communication system 500 only comprises one first communication device 100 and two second communication device 300. However, the communication system 500 may comprise any number of first communication devices 100 and any number of second communication devices 300 without deviating from the scope of the invention.

[0109] In this particular example, the first communication device 100 is configured as a client device, such as a UE, while the second communication devices 300 are configured as a network access node, such as base stations (BSs) or a transmission reception points (TRPs) . The network access node may be part of a radio access network (RAN) and can include a communication interface for communication with a network such as a core network (CN) . The communication between the first communication device 100 and the second communication devices 300 may be performed using channels e.g., in the DL and UL.

[0110] It is shown in Fig. 5 how the second communication devices 300 transmits its respective energy transfer signals 530 in the communication system 500. The first communication device 100 therefore receives two or more such energy transfer signals 530 and harvests energy from the energy transfer signals 530 using any energy harvesting techniques, e.g., having a rectenna circuit in its receiver module converting electromagnetic energy to direct current. Since the energy transfer signals 530 comprises the same activity mode switching code 532, the first communication device 100 can switch from a first activity mode to a second activity mode when detecting the activity mode switching code 532 carried by the energy transfer signals 530. Thereby, the energy transfer signals 530 herein disclosed have the double function of making possible energy harvesting and at the same time allow to switch the activity mode of the first communication device 100. The use of multiple received energy transfer signals for the detection of the activity mode switching code 532 serves the purpose of exploiting spatial diversity and averaging of fast fading effects. This ultimately would result in better correct code detection probability.

[0111] Further details related to embodiments of the invention will fully or partially now be described in a 3GPP context for providing deeper understanding of embodiments of the invention. Thus, 3GPP terminology, definitions, expressions and system architecture may be used. Especially, the first communication device 100 according to the invention may in these embodiments be configured to perform any of the described functions of a 3GPP UE. Correspondingly, the second communication device 300 according to the invention may in these embodiments be configured to perform any of the described functions of a 3GPP gNB. It may however be noted that embodiments of the invention are not limited thereto.

[0112] The proposed solution may be implemented in a communication standard. If adapted, the proposed solution may impact how a communication device wake-up and the signals transmitted by the network to trigger the activity of the communication device. Additionally, the first communication device 100 is capable of energy transfer signals 530 comprises an activity mode switching code 532, harvest and store energy and comparing it with a configured one. Hence, the hardware of the first communication device 100 is expected to be impacted.

[0113] Fig. 6 illustrates an exemplary receiver circuit for joint energy harvesting and activity mode switching code detection of a first communication device 100. Some components of the receiver circuit are worth highlighting, mainly energy harvesting and storage, and code detection based on pattern matching. Note that the described receiver circuit is not restrictive and other implementations are possible. The process of monitoring for activity mode switching code is an energy harvesting process that is coupled with a pattern matching procedure, performed on patterns derived from the harvested energy and the patterns computed based on the configured activity mode switching code. During activity mode switching code monitoring, the first communication device 100 may be configured to compare patterns and initiate activity mode switching, e.g., going from sleep to active modes, or vice versa, upon detection of an activity mode switching code that was intended for the first communication device 100. The device specific or common code parameters can be obtained from RRC configuration or from system information.

[0114] Therefore, with reference to Fig. 6, the first communication device 100 may comprise an antenna 110 being configured to receive two or more energy transfer signals 530. The antenna 110 is coupled to an impedance matching circuit 120 which in turn is coupled to a rectifier 122. The impedance matching circuit 120 is configured to minimize signal reflection and maximize power transfer. The first communication device 100 also comprises a power management block 124 which is configured to direct part of the harvested energy to an energy storage block 128 and provide enough of the signal energy for the activity mode switching code detection block 126, maintaining acceptable power levels to avoid possible impairments. Thus, a code detection block 126 and an energy storage block 128 are coupled to the power management block 124. The code detection block 126 is configured to monitor a pattern within the harvested energy. The pattern in the harvest energy is dependent on the code conveyed by the energy transfer signals, e.g., sequence of power offsets. The code detection block 126 may work by pattern matching between a precomputed pattern based on the configured code and patterns of the same length measured in the harvested energy.

[0115] The proposed solution can be used for most of the considered scenarios, e.g., in 3GPP 5G NR or future wireless networks air interface including a wide range of device capabilities.

[0116] Fig. 7 shows a signaling diagram illustrating further aspects of embodiments of the invention.

[0117] In step I in Fig. 7, the gNB 300 transmits a first control message 510 to the UE 100. The first control message 510 indicates information which the UE 100 may use for easier detection of the activity mode switching code 532 transmitted later in an energy transfer signal 530. Hence, the first control message 510 may indicate any of: an activity mode switching code detection period, an activity mode switching code duration, and a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of an amplitude modulated reference signal comprising the activity mode switching code 532.

[0118] The first control message 510 may be transmitted in a broadcast channel or in a system information block (SIB) . Upon detection of a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) , e.g., PBCH in a synchronization system block (SSB) , conveying system information, the UE 100 would be able to know the needed parameters to detect an activity switching code, even before RRC configuration.

[0119] In step II in Fig. 7, the UE 100 receives the first control message 510 from the gNB 100. By demodulating and decoding the first control message 510, the UE 100 obtain the information in the first control message 510.

[0120] In step III in Fig. 7, the gNB 30 also transmits a second control message 520 to the UE 100. The second control message 520 is an activation signal which means that second control message 520 indicates an activation of switching from the first activity mode to the second activity mode when the UE 100 detects the activity mode switching code 532.

[0121] The second control message 520 may be transmitted in dynamic control information, e.g., downlink control information (DCI) or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) , or semi-static control information, e.g., in RRC signaling.

[0122] In step IV in Fig. 7, the UE 100 receives the second control message 520 from the gNB 300. By demodulating and decoding the second control message 520, the UE 100 obtain the information in the second control message 520. The UE 100 by receiving the activation in the second control message 520 monitors for an activity mode switching code 532 in a plurality of energy transfer signals 530 detected by the UE 100.

[0123] In step V in Fig. 7, the gNB 300 and other gNBs transmits one or more energy transfer signals 530 in the communication system 500.

[0124] The properties and characteristics of the energy transfer signals 530 may depend on the application to be implemented. In embodiments of the invention, the energy transfer signal 530 is an amplitude modulated reference signal comprising the activity mode switching code 532. More, specifically, the activity mode switching code 532 may be a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of the amplitude modulated reference signals. This means that the energy transfer signal 530 may be a succession of pulses of predefined amplitude or transmission powers. When detecting such signal, the UE 100 may perform pattern matching on the harvested energy over time or cumulative harvested energy overtime. Each possible code would result in a given pattern in harvested energy easily detectable by the UE 100 without requiring tight synchronization in time and frequency.

[0125] In step VI in Fig. 7, the UE 100 receives a plurality of energy transfer signals 530 that are transmitted in the communication system 500. The transmission of energy transfer signals 530 may be performed by a plurality of communication devices in the communication system 500 such as a plurality of gNBs and / or TRPs. The UE 100 uses the information in the first control message 510 for monitoring and detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0126] Generally, the UE 100 may use the harvested energy for two purposes. Firstly, for recharging battery or other energy storing hardware of the UE 100 e.g., a capacitor. Secondly, to wake-up upon recognizing the activity mode switching code 532. Indeed, the process of activity mode switching trigger monitoring is an energy harvesting process with included pattern detection. The UE 100 may be configured with multiple activity modes, including multiple sleep states such as deep, micro and light sleep and multiple active modes, each having different capabilities.

[0127] Thus, in embodiments of the invention, the first activity mode is a sleep mode of the UE 100 while the second activity mode is an active mode of the UE 100, which means that the activity mode switching code 532 is a wake code. When in sleep mode, the UE 100 may maintain its energy harvesting circuit in its ON state. This includes hardware needed to harvest and store energy in the UE 100. This also includes hardware used to compare the pattern of the harvested energy and the configured activity mode switching code 532. In this case, the delay for the UE 100 to wake-up depends on length of the activity mode switching code 532 in the time domain, e.g., 5 ms to start wake-up in the present example.

[0128] The subject of how to detect the activity mode switching code 532 by the UE 100 is also considered in embodiments of the invention. As aforementioned, the first control message 510 may include information that may be used by the UE 100 for detecting the activity mode switching code 532. Thus, the information about an activity mode switching code detection period, an activity mode switching code duration, and a sequence of transmit powers or a sequence of transmit power offsets of an amplitude modulated reference signal comprising the activity mode switching code 532. This information will enable the UE 100 to recognize the modulation of the activity mode switching code 532, the resulting harvested energy pattern and the duration that this pattern spans. Thus, the UE 100 would be capable of reducing false detection probability and probability of not detecting the activity mode switching code 532.

[0129] In embodiments of the invention, the UE 100 may detect the activity mode switching code 532 based on a comparison between a first pattern of the harvested energy from the two or more energy harvesting signals 530 and a second pattern of the activity mode switching code 532.

[0130] The first pattern of the harvested energy may be a cumulative sum or an average of the harvested energy. The cumulative sum may be based on a duration of the activity mode switching code 532. In the latter case, the UE 100 looks for a pattern in the cumulative sum of the harvested energy that matches the expected pattern computed based on the configured activity switching code. The monitoring of the harvested energy pattern may be based on the duration of the activity mode switching code 532, i.e., the UE 100 compares patterns having the same length in time, which are equivalent to the activity mode switching code 532.

[0131] The UE 100 may compare the pattern of the harvested energy, which is a function of harvested energy over time, with the activity mode switching code 532. This may be done by considering the signal received from different TRPs in order to average out the impact of fast fading and other impairments. Alternately, averaging over time can be employed by the UE 100 but will lead to increased latency.

[0132] The harvested energy pattern / profile can be obtained as a function of the harvested energy over a predefined time interval and time instances, i.e., number of symbols / slots and gap between time instances of the activity mode switching code 532. The multiplexing of different activity mode switching codes 532 can be done in the frequency, code or time domain in such manner that it does not interfere with each other.

[0133] In other examples, the activity mode switching code may be detected based on pattern matching between a computed energy pattern based on the configured code and the cumulative sum of harvested energy over the code duration. The time instances to evaluate the activity mode switching code 532 are not forcibly consecutive.

[0134] Furthermore, the UE 100 may also use the received energy transfer signals 530 in other applications not directly related to switching activity mode.

[0135] In a first example of such an application, the UE 100 may perform a time or a frequency synchronization based on the two or more energy transfer signals 530. Thus, in embodiments of the invention, further information, such as time and cell search may be performed based on the energy transfer signals due to the fact that the known pattern may be used as a reference signal. Knowing the configuration and duration of the activity mode switching code 532, the UE 100 may derive a timing reference based on the detected patterns of harvested energy.

[0136] Alternately, the energy transfer signal can be used for coarse / initial synchronization assistance and other radio resource management (RRM) measurement purposes. Thus, in a second example of such an application, the UE 100 may perform a RRM measurement based on the two or more energy transfer signals 530. For example, the UE may perform cell search or handover measurements based on the energy transfer signals 530 by assessing their strength or the resulting amounts of harvested energy.

[0137] In a third example of such an application, the UE 100 may perform a channel estimation based on the two or more energy transfer signals 530. In embodiments of the invention, the UE 100 may derive pathloss values and other channel state information (CSI) quantities based on the energy transfer signal. The UE 100 is aware of the transmit power of the TRPs, based on the configuration of the energy transfer signals and the activity mode switching code. Consequently, in the case of TRP-specific activity mode switching code 532, the UE 100 may derive pathloss estimates since it can differentiate energy transfer signals coming from different TRPs, and it can assess the pathloss impact from the attenuation of the energy transfer signal.

[0138] Moreover, the second communication device 300 may also use the energy transfer signals 530 in different sensing applications to gain information about objects in the communication system 500. Thus, the second communication device 300 may acquire a sensing information of an object 600 based on a reflection of the transmitted energy transfer signals 530.

[0139] The sensing may be used in a radar application as illustrated in Fig. 8. The second communication device 300 in this scenario transmits one or more energy transfer signals 530 in different directions. An object 600, in this particular example a car, is moving in a direction illustrated with the arrow from a first position P1 at a first time instance T1 to a second position at a second time instance T2. The second communication device 300 thereafter receives one or more reflected versions 530′of the one or more transmitted energy transfer signals 530. Based on the reflected versions 530′of the energy transfer signals 530, the second communication device 300 derives any of a position of the object 600 at a certain time instance, a speed and a moving direction of the object 600. The processing of the reflected versions 530′of the energy transfer signals 530 may be performed according to known radar techniques and algorithms. Thus, the second communication device 300 may comprise one or more sensors configured to obtain sensor information for such radar applications.

[0140] A network access node herein may also be denoted as a radio network access node, an access network access node, an access point (AP) , or a base station (BS) , e.g., a radio base station (RBS) , which in some networks may be referred to as transmitter, “gNB” , “gNodeB” , “eNB” , “eNodeB” , “NodeB” or “B node” , depending on the standard, technology and terminology used. The radio network access node may be of different classes or types such as e.g., macro eNodeB, home eNodeB or pico base station, based on transmission power and thereby the cell size. The radio network access node may further be a station, which is any device that contains an IEEE 802.11-conformant media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) interface to the wireless medium (WM) . The radio network access node may be configured for communication in 3GPP related long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced, fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, such as new radio (NR) and their evolutions, as well as in IEEE related Wi-Fi, worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and their evolutions.

[0141] A client device herein may be denoted as a user device, a user equipment (UE) , a mobile station, an internet of things (IoT) device, a sensor device, a wireless terminal and / or a mobile terminal, and is enabled to communicate wirelessly in a wireless communication system, sometimes also referred to as a cellular radio system. The UEs may further be referred to as mobile telephones, cellular telephones, computer tablets or laptops with wireless capability. The UEs in this context may be, for example, portable, pocket-storable, hand-held, computer-comprised, or vehicle-mounted mobile devices, enabled to communicate voice and / or data, via a RAN, with another communication entity, such as another receiver or a server. The UE may further be a station, which is any device that contains an IEEE 802.11-conformant MAC and PHY interface to the WM. The UE may be configured for communication in 3GPP related LTE, LTE-advanced, 5G wireless systems, such as NR, and their evolutions, as well as in IEEE related Wi-Fi, WiMAX and their evolutions.

[0142] Furthermore, any method according to embodiments of the invention may be implemented in a computer program, having code means, which when run by processing means causes the processing means to execute the steps of the method. The computer program is included in a computer readable medium of a computer program product. The computer readable medium may comprise essentially any memory, such as previously mentioned a ROM, a PROM, an EPROM, a flash memory, an EEPROM, or a hard disk drive.

[0143] Moreover, it should be realized that the first communication device 100 and the second communication device 300 comprise the necessary communication capabilities in the form of e.g., functions, means, units, elements, etc., for performing or implementing embodiments of the invention. Examples of other such means, units, elements and functions are: processors, memory, buffers, control logic, encoders, decoders, rate matchers, de-rate matchers, mapping units, multipliers, decision units, selecting units, switches, interleavers, de-interleavers, modulators, demodulators, inputs, outputs, antennas, amplifiers, receiver units, transmitter units, DSPs, TCM encoder, TCM decoder, power supply units, power feeders, communication interfaces, communication protocols, etc. which are suitably arranged together for performing the solution.

[0144] Therefore, the processor (s) of the first communication device 100 and the second communication device 300 may comprise, e.g., one or more instances of a CPU, a processing unit, a processing circuit, a processor, an ASIC, a microprocessor, or other processing logic that may interpret and execute instructions. The expression “processor” may thus represent a processing circuitry comprising a plurality of processing circuits, such as e.g., any, some or all of the ones mentioned above. The processing circuitry may further perform data processing functions for inputting, outputting, and processing of data comprising data buffering and device control functions, such as call processing control, user interface control, or the like.

[0145] Finally, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but also relates to and incorporates all embodiments within the scope of the appended independent claims.
