Devices and methods for uplink random access in a cell-free MIMO wireless network

Abstract

A user equipment, UE, (120a,b) is disclosed for network access via one or more of a plurality of radio units, RUs, (110a-d) in a cell-free wireless network (100). The UE is configured to receive during a first time interval from each RU of a subset of the plurality of RUs a beacon signal, wherein the subset of the plurality of RUs includes a first RU emitting a first beacon signal, and a second RU emitting a second beacon signal different from the first beacon signal. Moreover, the UE is configured to determine, based on the plurality of beacon signals, a signature of beacon signal strengths indicative of the relative propagation channels of the UE (120a,b) with respect to the subset of the plurality of RUs (110a-d) and to select a codebook from a plurality of codebooks of codewords based on the signature of beacon signal strengths.
