Abstract

Described herein is a process using a novel composition for strengthening hair by crosslinking the free thiols naturally present on hair or resulting from the reduction of disulfide bonds in damaged or treated hair. The process involves applying a composition containing an active agent that interacts with free thiols present in hair, forming a covalent carbon-sulphur bond, thereby enhancing the structural integrity of hair. The present invention provides a rinse off or leave-in treatment that effectively reduces breakage and restores strength to weakened or damaged hair and helps in increased longevity of reshaped hair such as straightening or curling.

Description

[0001]“COMPOSITION FOR HAIR STRENGTHENING” Field of Invention: The current invention is in field of strengthening of hair. More particularly, the 5 current invention provides a composition for crosslinking the broken disulfide bonds in treated or damaged hair. Background of Invention: Since ancient times, straightening hair has been known to make hair appear 10 lustrous, streamlined, and sleek. Hair reshaping is traditionally accomplished by a variety of procedures, such as using a flat iron or hot comb, chemical relaxers, Brazilian or Japanese hair straightening techniques, or roller set / blow dryer styling. 15 These techniques can be broadly categorized as “Chemical Methods,” which cause the hair to reshape, and “Non-Chemical Methods,” which result in temporary straightening of the hair. The above-mentioned non-chemical techniques include using a flat iron, hot 20 comb, or roller set / blow dryer styling. With the use of these procedures, hair is briefly heated, denaturing the keratin and giving the illusion of straighter hair. The keratin quickly reverts to its original state when it comes into contact with its surroundings. 25 On the other hand, chemical techniques such as Brazilian treatments, RedOx treatments, and hair relaxing last longer. Using a hot flat iron after applying a cross-linking chemical to the hair such as formaldehyde, glyoxyloyl carbocysteine, or glyoxylic acid is the Brazilian keratin 30 treatment. The cross-linking agent helps the reactive groups in the keratin of hair to connect with one another. The treatment lessens frizz, straightens hair, and improves luster. The result lasts for about half a year, after which there is a slow return to the natural texture of the hair. Redox processes involve the transfer of electrons among the constituents of aqueous, gaseous, and solid phases. The hair goes through a number of steps in 5 the RedOx treatment process in order to achieve structural modification. To effectively reduce the disulphide bonds in cystine into thiols, or convert cystine to cysteines (-RSH), a reducing agent chosen from thioglycolic acid or a salt thereof, thioglycerol, cysteamine, and cysteine or its salt, inorganic sulphites, is applied for 45 minutes to an hour. After that, heat is applied and the hair is stretched to 10 realign the thiols. The last stage involves using H2O2 to oxidize the thiols, which makes it easier for the disulphide bonds (R-S-S-R) to form at the new sites. Due to the instability of the disulphide bonds in the new locations, hair treated in this manner would curl back. The reduction step (step 1) has a pH of approximately 8.5–9.5, while the oxidation step (step 2) is done at a pH of approximately 3. The 15 treatment takes two to three hours to complete. The ionic metals include sodium, lithium, and potassium. These metals are combined with oxygen and hydrogen, forming ionic compounds known as relaxers which include the following active ingredients: sodium hydroxide 20 (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and lithium hydroxide (LiOH) in the pH range of 12-14. It is the hydroxide ion, which is the alkaline chemical species common to all the above-listed relaxers. Hair keratin contains a disulphide cystine(R-S-S-R) that is attacked by the hydroxide ion. This results in the formation of dehydroalanine and thiolate, which then combine to form a 25 lanthionine bond (R-S-R), releasing a sulphur atom and reshaping (straightening) hair. This process is known as beta elimination analysis. The abovementioned techniques lead to permanent or temporary damaging of hair caused due to breaking of disulphide cystine (R-S-S-R). The stability of the hair 30 style is also known to be reliant on disulfide bonds, which are prone to instability and can readily reduce to sulfhydryl groups in reducing conditions. Many attempts have been made to introduce oxidizing chemicals in an attempt to restore the disulfide bonds. Numerous compounds that enhance the stability of permanent waves rely on this technology. A significant amount of patents and patent applications, including US9095518 and WO2015017768, are also focused on the 5 restoration of disulfide bonds. For instance AU2017266787 relates to a method for strengthening hair and repairing keratin fibers, comprising providing a first crosslinking formula and a second crosslinking formula, wherein the first crosslinking formula contains a 10 Bronsted base with at least double functions, and the second formula contains an organic acid with at least double functions and a cosmetically acceptable carrier. However, said patent describes use of a two components, whereby the first components is a bi-functional Bronsted base and the component is a bi-functional organic acid which leads to strengthening of hair. However, the disclose process is 15 tedious which requires handling of two different components separately. In view of above, it would be prudent to develop such a formulation which is less tedious and give equal effective results at an affordable price which provides the long-lasting efficacy and durability of the treatment, contributing to enhance hair 20 health and manageability. Hence, in view of above, the current invention endeavours to overcome the above cited drawbacks of the prior art by providing a novel composition and method for treating and strengthening damaged hair and / or treated hair. 25 Summary of Invention: In view of above drawbacks of the prior art, in main aspect, the present invention provides a composition for strengthening hair by crosslinking the broken disulfide bonds in chemically (coloring, bleaching, hair reshaping) treated or damaged hair. 30 The process involves applying the active agent composition to the damaged or chemically (coloring, bleaching, hair reshaping) treated hair, wherein the active agent interacts with free thiol groups present in the hair and forms a carbon sulfur covalent bond In another aspect, the present invention provides a formulation for strengthening 5 of hair and the composition which requires a treatment time of approx.5 minutes before being rinsed off and which strengthens the hair. In yet another aspect, the present invention provides a leave-in formulation for strengthening of hair and the composition thereof. 10 The invention will now be described in detail in connection with certain preferred and optional embodiments, so that various aspects thereof may be more fully understood and appreciated.
