Description
1 / 28 “MULTIFUNCTIONAL SYSTEM, HIGH SPF COSMETIC COMPOSITION COMPRISING THE SAME AND COSMETIC USE OF SAID COMPOSITION TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF THE SKIN” Field of Invention
[001] The present invention relates to the field of cosmetic compositions with a high sun protection factor (SPF) comprising a multifunctional system based on silica particles and a silanol hybrid in a cosmetically effective amount to promote oil control of the skin, a calming and anti-inflammatory effect, hydration, strengthening and restoration of the skin barrier and improvement of skin appearance by reducing pores and preventing aging. Fundamentals of the Invention
[002] The use of products with sun protection is widely recommended to protect the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, such as premature aging, sunburn, and other damage to the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to inflammation, dehydration, and other dermatological problems.
[003] With the growing demand for products with high sun protection factor (SPF), cosmetic compositions are becoming increasingly complex and, consequently, their development more challenging. The combination of different photoprotective substances and additives can generate, for example, difficulties in compatibility between ingredients, resulting in undesirable changes in the texture, stability, and appearance of the final product. In particular, compositions with high SPF tend to be heavier and oilier due to the nature and proportion of the ingredients used, which can generate an uncomfortable sensation and an undesirable shiny appearance on the skin. Inadequate formulations can also cause irritation and aggravate problems such as acne.
[004] Thus, a photoprotective cosmetic composition must be balanced Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, page 10 / 45 2 / 28 to ensure effective broad-spectrum UV protection without weighing down the skin. The cosmetic composition also needs to meet the specific needs of each skin type, particularly oily skin, controlling shine and providing a light and comfortable texture for a pleasant sensory experience.
[005] Generally, high SPF formulations with high silica concentrations are anhydrous or have low water content, since silicas have a hydrophobic character, which hinders uniform dispersion in the formulation and increases the viscosity of the composition. In liquid or semi-solid aqueous formulations, the high viscosity provided by silicas and the correct ratio between emollient, oily load of sunscreens and silica are a challenge, since if used in unbalanced proportions, they can cause a rolling effect on the skin, that is, a crumbly or cracked appearance, making application of the product difficult and impairing consumer adherence. The formation of rolling, in addition to the undesirable sensory and aesthetic aspects, compromises the effectiveness of the product, since it does not allow the formation of a uniform layer on the skin, preventing protection from UV rays.Furthermore, silica concentrations higher than necessary in the liquid composition can also lead to a feeling of dryness, instead of a matte texture.
[006] In the state of the art, document EP 0839518 describes a cosmetic powder that exhibits high SPF content photoprotectors and non-pyrogenic spherical porous silica, obtaining a powder without the negative attributes of texture and unpleasant oily skin feel that usually result from the use of this high proportion of photoprotective agent. There is no mention of aqueous compositions with a high amount of silica and good spreadability.
[007] Document BR 11 2016 000139 7 refers to a topical composition comprising a hydrophilic benzimidazole-type UVB photoprotector, an organopolysiloxane functionalized with at least one UV light-absorbing group, Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, page 11 / 45 3 / 28 and highly porous cross-linked silica and / or polymethylmethacrylate spheres in a percentage of up to 3% by weight. According to the tests carried out in the document, combinations of sunscreens other than hydrophilic benzimidazole and an organopolysiloxane, even with the presence of silica, lead to a reduction in SPF, and this problem is solved by the combination of sunscreens.
[008] Document BR 11 2022 021787 0 (WO 2022 / 000052) reveals the challenge of incorporating high concentrations of silica (generally limited to about 0.5% by weight) into a cosmetic sunscreen composition due to the hydrophobic nature of silica, and also a difficulty in formulating stable compositions while preserving satisfactory product properties, such as firmness, high SPF, and a dry touch on the skin after application, combined with a matte effect. Thus, the document refers to anhydrous compositions (less than 5% free water) with high SPF that have a high concentration of hydrophobic silica combined with an emollient system, a filler system, and a UV filter system, all examples referring to stick-form compositions. That is, there is no mention of aqueous compositions with high amounts of silica, good spreadability, and oil control capacity.
[009] Document WO 2021 / 125304 refers to non-powdered cosmetic compositions comprising at least one lipophilic organic UV filter and at least one hollow, preferably non-porous, spherical silica particle. The document describes that it has been surprisingly discovered that hollow, non-porous silica sphere particles can increase the UV absorbance of non-powdered compositions comprising at least one lipophilic organic UV filter, the main objective being to reduce the amount of photoprotective agent used through the use of specific silica spheres.
[010] As can be seen, silica particles are widely recognized in the state of the art for their ability to absorb oil, Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, page 12 / 45 4 / 28 However, its use requires care and extensive experimentation. The type of silica used, its concentration and hydrophobic nature, and the impact on the stability, texture, and sensory performance of a formulation are aspects that need to be evaluated. If poorly balanced in a cosmetic composition, the proportions of silica and sunscreens can compromise both the SPF and the sensory quality of the product and its effects on the skin.
[011] In this context, the inventors of the present invention have surprisingly developed a photoprotective cosmetic composition with a high sun protection factor comprising a multifunctional system based on at least two silicas and a silanol hybrid that also promotes hydration and control of oiliness and inflammation of the skin. Thus, the invention represents an advance in the technical field, meeting both the skin protection needs and the functional and sensory expectations of users. Objectives of the Invention
[012] The object of the invention is to provide a multifunctional system comprising at least two types of silica particles and a hybrid silanol comprising biofunctional silicon associated with at least two plant extracts, preferably Centella Asiatica extract and Astragalus membranaceus extract.
[013] Furthermore, another objective of the invention is the preparation of a cosmetic composition comprising said multifunctional system and at least two broad-spectrum photoprotective agents.
[014] It is also one of the objectives of the invention to use the multifunctional system in the preparation of liquid or semi-solid aqueous cosmetic compositions, to offer a range of benefits to the skin such as oil control, calming and anti-inflammatory effects, hydration, strengthening of the skin barrier and an improvement in the overall appearance of the skin, reducing the appearance of pores, preventing Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, page 13 / 45 5 / 28 signs of aging and also promotes skin coverage with a matte (opaque texture) and dry (shine-free) effect. [089] Table 3 exemplifies a silica-free formulation, which was tested throughout the development of the present invention. This formulation did not present a suitable sensory experience for application on oily skin, since it did not provide a dry feel nor a quick drying on the skin. Unlike the present invention, which despite the high amount of silica in a high-oil, high-SPF formulation, presents a matte effect and is suitable for oily skin, proving the importance of the multifunctional system of the invention. Check the pH and adjust if necessary. Example 3: Sebumetry study
[092] The cosmetic composition, as exemplified in Table 1, was tested on a sample of 20 participants, of whom 95% had oily skin and 5% had combination skin. The aim of the study was to evaluate the control and reduction of skin oiliness, using sebaceous secretion measurements obtained by the biometric technique of sebumetry. Measurements were taken before application and at different time intervals after a single application of the composition: 15 minutes (immediate effect), 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours.
[093] The results of the sebumetry study with the cosmetic composition as exemplified in Example 1 showed beneficial results on facial skin (see Table 4). Application of the composition resulted in a significant reduction in sebaceous secretion in the skin, observed as early as the first 15 minutes of topical application compared to the initial skin condition. This reduction continued to be observed after 1 hour and 2 hours of application of the composition.
[094] In addition to the immediate reduction of oiliness, the cosmetic composition Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, page 31 / 45 23 / 28 showed superior oil control compared to the control (water application) over a prolonged period. A significant reduction in oiliness was observed after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and even 12 hours of application to the facial skin. This suggests that the product not only reduces oiliness quickly but also maintains this effect throughout the day. The cosmetic composition provided an average reduction of 17.6% in skin oiliness compared to the control (water).
[095] It is also worth noting that all study participants showed some reduction in oiliness after using the composition. These results highlight the effectiveness and durability of the cosmetic composition of the present invention in controlling skin oiliness, making it a promising option for people with oily skin. Table 4 - Evaluation of cosmetic composition on the control and reduction of skin oiliness. SKIN OILINESS ASSESSMENT TIME (%) % OF PARTICIPANTS WHO SHOWED A REDUCTION IN SKIN OILINESS After 15 minutes -3.1% 25% After 1 hour 2.6% 75% After 2 hours 4.3% 85% After 4 hours 8.6% 90% After 6 hours 11.9% 90% After 8 hours 14.6% 95% After 10 hours 16.7% 100% After 12 hours 17.6% 100% Example 4 - Pore reduction study
[096] The cosmetic composition, as exemplified in Table 1, was further evaluated in a sample of 35 participants, of whom 69% had oily skin and 31% combination skin, regarding the reduction of facial skin pores through image analysis via the VISIA facial analysis system. Images were taken before application and at different time intervals after application of the composition: 15 Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, pages 32 / 45 24 / 28 minutes (immediate effect), 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 hours and the results are shown in Figure 1.
[097] Thus, after applying the cosmetic composition, a significant reduction of up to 31.2% in the size and visibility of facial pores was observed in the first 15 minutes of use compared to the initial skin condition. This reduction continued to be observed after 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours of application, demonstrating reductions of 26.6%, 22.5%, 21% and 20.2%, respectively (Figure 1). Again, demonstrating the immediate effect of the cosmetic composition. Example 5 - Cosmetic composition acceptance study
[098] The cosmetic composition in Table 1 was evaluated for sensory aspects, including touch, texture, dry effect, and anti-shine effect, through subjective acceptance assessments conducted with users of the composition after immediate use and 28 days of use. The results, presented in Table 5, demonstrate that the composition is effective in moisturizing and controlling oiliness, in addition to improving the sensory experience of touch and texture on the skin, a common problem in similar products. The high acceptance rate among users reinforces the effectiveness of the cosmetic composition and its suitability for people with oily skin. [099] The cosmetic composition described in Table 1 was also evaluated for its ability to stimulate the production of type I procollagen. The study was performed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with ex vivo skin fragments.
[0100] As demonstrated in Figure 2, the application of the cosmetic composition promoted positive results on skin firmness. The composition promoted a 57.12% increase in the production of type I procollagen compared to the control group. This increase demonstrates the ability of the cosmetic composition to effectively stimulate collagen production, providing significant benefits for skin firmness and overall appearance. Example 7 - Skin hydration study
[0101] The cosmetic composition, as exemplified in Table 1, was further evaluated in a sample of 35 participants, of whom 91% had dry skin and 9% normal skin, regarding the improvement in skin hydration. The methodology consisted of Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, pages 34 / 45 26 / 28 assessment of skin hydration through capacitance measurements using the Corneometry technique at different time intervals after application of the composition: 15 minutes (immediate effect), 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 hours.
[0102] Positive results regarding the increased skin hydration provided by the cosmetic composition were also observed (see Table 6). After application of the composition, a significant increase in skin hydration was observed at various time intervals. Specifically, there was a 41.6% increase in hydration after 15 minutes, 26.4% after 1 hour, 18.6% after 2 hours, 11% after 4 hours, 6.6% after 8 hours, and 3.2% after 10 hours, compared to the baseline / initial condition and the control (without application of the composition).
[0103] In addition, 100% of users showed improved skin hydration after 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours of application. Even after 10 hours, 74% of users still reported improved hydration. These results demonstrate the prolonged effectiveness of the cosmetic composition in keeping the skin hydrated throughout the day. Table 6 - Evaluation of cosmetic composition on skin hydration EVALUATION TIMES % IMPROVEMENT IN SKIN HYDRATION % IMPROVEMENT IN SKIN FEEL After 15 minutes 41.6% 100% After 1 hour 26.4% 100% After 2 hours 18.6% 100% After 4 hours 11.0% 100% After 8 hours 6.6% 100% After 10 hours 3.2% 74% Example 8 - Study of efficacy and restoration of the skin barrier
[0104] The cosmetic composition described in Table 1 was also evaluated in a sample of 35 participants, 91% with dry skin and 9% with normal skin, to analyze its effect on improving skin barrier efficiency and restoration. Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, pages 35 / 45 27 / 28 of the skin barrier.
[0105] The skin barrier efficiency assessment was performed using the evaporimetry technique by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL) at the beginning of the study and after 15 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 hours after application of the composition.
[0106] The methodology for evaluating skin barrier restoration included partial removal of the stratum corneum (tape-stripping), followed by measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) using the biometric technique of evaporation. Assessments were also performed at the beginning of the study and after 15 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 hours of application of the composition.
[0107] The positive results of the cosmetic composition of the present invention in relation to the skin barrier were also evident. The composition promoted a significant increase in skin barrier efficiency (Table 7), as well as in skin barrier restoration (Table 8), as demonstrated by the reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) rate at various time intervals after application of the composition.
[0108] As demonstrated in Table 7, the cosmetic composition provided an average reduction in skin TEWL rate of 19.9% after 15 minutes, 14.5% after 1 hour, 9% after 2 hours, 6.7% after 4 hours, 5.3% after 8 hours, and 2.8% after 10 hours, compared to the initial skin condition and the control (skin without application of any products). Furthermore, 100% of users showed improved skin barrier efficiency after 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours of application. Even after 10 hours, 83% of users still reported an improvement. Table 7 - Evaluation of cosmetic composition on the effectiveness of the skin barrier EVALUATION TIMES % REDUCTION IN TEWL % PARTICIPANTS After 15 minutes 19.9 100 After 1 hour 14.5 100 Petition 870240110924, dated 12 / 27 / 2024, pp. 36 / 45 28 / 28 After 2 hours 9.0 100 After 4 hours 6.7 100 After 8 hours 5.3 100 After 10 hours 0.5 83
[0109] Table 8 shows that the cosmetic composition provided an average reduction in the skin's TEWL rate of 10.8% after 15 minutes, 8.9% after 1 hour, 6.5% after 2 hours, 4.7% after 4 hours, 2.9% after 8 hours, and 2.3% after 10 hours, compared to the initial skin condition and the control (skin without any product application). 100% of users showed improvement in skin barrier recovery after 15 minutes and 1 hour of application.
