Description
[0001] Cross-reference to related applications
[0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 019571, filed May 4, 2020, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates generally to data center cabinets, and more specifically, to top covers for data center cabinets. Background Technology
[0004] In typical data center racks, various top covers can be used to perform different functions depending on the specific application. For example, some applications may require openings for cabling, or large openings for power outlet units, wires, or other large items to pass through. In other applications, openings or exhaust vents may be needed to dissipate heat from the data center rack, while in still others, a solid top cover or some other method may be required to restrict heat dissipation. Therefore, rather than equipping data center racks with various top covers for specific applications, it is beneficial to equip the data center rack with a single top cover that can adapt to any required application. Summary of the Invention
[0005] In one example, a data center rack includes a base frame and a top cover attached to the base frame. The top cover includes a main panel having a front edge, a rear edge opposite the front edge, a first side edge extending between the front and rear edges, a second side edge opposite the first side edge extending between the front and rear edges, a top surface, and a bottom surface. An opening is formed through the main panel and is recessed and spaced from the front, rear, first, and second side edges of the main panel. A removable door is positioned above the opening and hinged to the main panel such that the door can rotate between an open and closed position and can be detached from the main panel.
[0006] In another example, a data center rack includes a base frame and a top cover attached to the base frame. The top cover includes a front panel and a rear panel positioned adjacent to the front panel. The front and rear panels together define a front edge, a rear edge, a first side edge, a second side edge, a top surface, a bottom surface, and an embedded opening spaced apart from the front, rear, first, and second side edges. A removable door is positioned above the opening and hinged to one of the front and rear panels, allowing the door to rotate between an open and closed position and to be detached from the top cover. [0038] The examples shown and described herein provide a data center cabinet having a top cover with a single main panel that spans the top of the data center cabinet, or two or more separate components that together span the entire top of the data center cabinet, which can reduce or prevent damage during handling. The top cover has two large openings toward the front of the cabinet that can be used for cables to pass through, for ventilation, etc., and one large opening toward the back of the cabinet that can be accessed by rotating open or removing a hinged door. The hinged door also has one or more cutouts at the edge of the door to allow cables and power outlet units to pass through. When large diameter power outlet unit plugs need to pass through the opening in the door, the door is rotated open to allow them to pass through. The example top cover also includes electrical bonding features that provide electrical continuity between the door and the base frame of the data center cabinet.
[0039] The examples also provide shipping casters that are easily installed and removed from the data center cabinet and are reusable, allowing a large number of data center cabinets to be moved from a shipping dock to their final destination, or moved around a facility by reusing the shipping casters rather than having each data center cabinet have its own permanently installed shipping casters. The shipping casters are installed below the base frame, which does not increase the overall width or depth of the data center cabinet, which maintains the maneuverability of the data center cabinet. In addition, the shipping casters are installed in the same location as the factory installed casters, and thus, do not raise the cabinet above the height that a set of pre-installed casters would raise, which speeds up installation and allows the data center cabinet to be maneuvered through passageways of limited height.
[0040] Reference is made toFigures 2-5 An example data center cabinet 10 is shown, which generally includes a base frame 100 and a front door 15, a rear door 20, side panels 25, and a top cover 200, 300 mounted or attached to the base frame 100. The front door 15 can be a single door as shown, hinged on one or both sides, with one or more handles; can be a double door, hinged on the sides and opening in the middle; can be solid or perforated, or can have any other features as required for a particular application. Similarly, the rear door 20 can be a double door as shown, hinged on the sides and opening in the middle; can be a single door as described above, can be solid or perforated, or can have any other features as required for a particular application. The side panels 25 on each side of the data center cabinet 10 can be a single panel or multiple panels, as shown, can be removably secured to the base frame 100, can be solid or perforated, and can have any other features as required for a particular application.
[0041] As Figures 6-14 As best shown, the base frame 100 includes a pair of front uprights 102 and a bottom side-to-side beam 104 and a top side-to-side beam 120, each positioned between the front uprights 102 and connected to each front upright 102, for example, by threaded members. The pair of front uprights 102, the bottom side-to-side beam 104, and the top side-to-side beam 120 together define a front picture frame assembly 150. Similarly, the base frame 100 includes a pair of rear uprights 122 and a bottom side-to-side beam 124 and a top side-to-side beam 140, each positioned between the rear uprights 122 and connected to each rear upright 122, for example, by threaded members. The pair of rear uprights 122, the bottom side-to-side beam 124, and the top side-to-side beam 140 together define a rear picture frame assembly 152.
[0042] The pair of top front-to-rear beams 142A, the pair of middle front-to-rear beams 142B, and the pair of bottom front-to-rear beams 142C are positioned between the corresponding front uprights 102 and rear uprights 122 and connected to the corresponding front uprights 102 and rear uprights 122, for example, by threaded members 154, to connect the front picture frame assembly 150 to the rear picture frame assembly 152.
[0043] Adjustable equipment rails 148 are connected to the top front-to-back beams, the middle front-to-back beams, and the bottom front-to-back beams 142A, 142B, 142C at opposite sides of the base frame 100 and are configured to receive and hold electronic components within the data center cabinet 10. The equipment rails 148 can be connected to the top front-to-back beams, the middle front-to-back beams, and the bottom front-to-back beams 142A, 142B, 142C with threaded members such as screws or bolts, with a manual locking mechanism, or in any other desired manner, but preferably are connected so that the equipment rails 148 can be adjusted fore and aft within the data center cabinet 10 to allow for installation of electronic components of different sizes.
[0044] The adjustable leveling legs 144 are attached to the bottom side-to-side beams 104, 124 by threading the threaded shafts 146 of each adjustable leveling leg 144 into the corresponding holes 118, 138 in the bottom side-to-side beams 104, 124. In the example shown, one adjustable leveling leg 144 is attached to the bottom side-to-side beam 104 and a pair of adjustable leveling legs 144 are attached to the bottom side-to-side beam 124 to allow for horizontal and height adjustment of the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10.
[0045] Referring now to Figure 13 A first example top cover 200 that can be used with the data center cabinet 10 is shown. The top cover 200 has a single, unitary, monolithic main panel 202 that spans the entire top of the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10 and is attached to the base frame 100 by screws 260 that extend through holes in the main panel 202 and into the base frame 100. The main panel 202 has a front edge 206, a rear edge 208 opposite the front edge 206, opposite first and second side edges 210, 212 that extend between the front and rear edges 206, 208, a top face 214, and a bottom face 216. A pair of longitudinal side openings 218 in a front portion of the main panel 202 run substantially parallel to the first and second side edges 210, 212 and are inset and spaced apart from the front, rear, first, and second side edges 206, 208, 210, 212 of the main panel 202. The side openings 218 can be left open to allow cables to pass through. Alternatively, a panel 220 with four separate openings, two separate openings, or a single large opening can be placed over the side openings 218 Figures 8-9) to the main panel 202, which can be used to attach a brush seal strip to prevent heat leakage from the data center cabinet 10, to attach a protective bezel 222 to cover the side opening 218, or to attach a cool boot 224 such as Panduit Part No. CTGN3X5 to seal the cabinet top cover opening Figure 7
[0046] A large rear opening 226 is also formed through a rear portion of the main panel 202 and is also inset and spaced apart from the front, rear, first side and second side edges 206, 208, 210, 212 of the main panel 202. A removable door 234 is hinged to the main panel 202 and is positioned over the opening 226. The removable door 234 has an outwardly extending flange 238 that extends from a first end 236 of the door 234 and is slightly offset. The flange 238 is positioned under the main panel 202 to hinge the door 234 to the main panel 202 and to allow the door 234 to be rotated between an open position Figures 10 ) and a closed position Figure 9 ) and to also allow the door 234 to be removed from the main panel 202 Figures 19-21 . The door 234 also has side and rear cutouts 240 on the side and rear edges of the door 234 that form apertures 242 between the door 234 and the main panel 202 that are preferably large enough to pass cables and mounting power outlet unit wires therethrough. When a large diameter power outlet unit plug needs to be passed through the apertures 242, the door 234 can be rotated to the open position to allow passage Figure 11 . Brush seal strips can also be installed on the door 234 and / or the main panel 202 to cover the apertures 242 to prevent unwanted heat leakage.
[0047] When in the closed position, the door 234 is supported by a door stop flange 228 that extends from the main panel 202 and is offset and extends into the opening 226. As Figure 12 shown and described below with respect to the top cover 300, the main panel 202 can also have a grounding tab 330 that extends from the main panel 202 into the opening 226 and a grounding clip 332 that is mounted on the grounding tab 330 to provide electrical continuity between the main panel 202 and the door 234 when the door 234 is in the closed position.
[0048] As Figure 11 and Figures 15-21 As best shown, door 234 may also include one or more latches 244 configured to prevent rotation and disassembly of door 234 when in the closed position. In the illustrated example, latch 244 is a retractable spring-loaded pin 246 positioned on opposite sides of door 234. Pin 248 of the retractable spring-loaded pin 246 protrudes from opposite sides of door 234 and engages with the bottom surface 216 of main panel 202 to prevent movement of door 234. Figures 15-16 The pin 248 can then be moved to the retracted position, which separates the pin 248 from the main panel 202 to allow the door 234 to rotate and move. The door 234 may also include a locking feature 250 configured to hold the retractable spring-loaded pin 246 in the retracted position. In the example shown, the locking feature 250 is an arcuate notch 252 formed at the edge of the door 234, configured to receive and hold the pin 248 of the retractable spring-loaded pin 246 when the pin 248 is retracted and rotated 90°.
[0049] refer to Figure 13 This illustrates a second exemplary top cover 300 that can also be used with data center rack 10. Top cover 300 is similar to top cover 200, except that instead of having a single, one-piece main panel, it has two separate components mounted adjacent to each other on the base frame 100. Using two separate components reduces the risk of damage to top cover 300 during handling, transportation, or installation.
[0050] like Figures 13-14 As best shown, the top cover 300 has a front panel 302 and a separate rear panel 304 positioned adjacent to the front panel 302. The front panel 302 and the rear panel 304 together span the entire top of the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10 and define a front edge 306, a rear edge 308 opposite to the front edge 306, opposing first and second side edges 310, 312 extending between the front edge 306 and the rear edge 308, a top surface 314, and a bottom surface 316. Both the front panel 302 and the rear panel 304 are attached to the base frame 100 by screws 360 extending through holes in the front panel 302 and the rear panel 304 and extending into the base frame 100. A pair of longitudinal side openings 318 in the front panel 302 are substantially parallel to the first and second side edges 310, 312, and are recessed and spaced apart from the front edge, rear edge, first side edge, and second side edges 306, 308, 310, 312. The side openings 318 can remain open to allow cables to pass through. Alternatively, the panel 220 can be secured to the side openings 318. Figures 19-21top cover 300 above, which can be used to attach brush seals to prevent heat leakage from the data center cabinet 10, to attach a protective bezel 222 to cover the side opening 318, or to attach a discharge vent 224 to provide heat discharge from the data center cabinet 10, as shown and described above with respect to the top cover 200. Figures 11-12
[0051] The front and rear panels 302, 304 also together define a large rear opening 326, which is also inset and spaced apart from the front, rear, first side, and second side edges 306, 308, 310, 312. A removable door 334, which is identical to the removable door 234 described above, is positioned over the opening 326 and is hinged to the front panel 302 to allow the door 334 to be rotated between an open position and a closed position and also to be removed from the top cover 300. Alternatively, the door 334 can also be hinged to the rear panel 304. Like the door 234, the door 334 also has side and rear cutouts 340 on the side and rear edges of the door 334, which form apertures 342 between the door 334 and the rear panel 304, which are preferably large enough to allow cables and power outlet unit wires to pass through. When a large diameter power outlet unit plug needs to pass through the apertures 342, the door 334 can be rotated to the open position to allow passage. Brush seals can also be installed on the door 334 and / or the rear panel 304 to cover the apertures 342 to prevent unwanted heat leakage.
[0052] When in the closed position, the door 334 is supported by a door stop flange 328, which extends from the rear panel 304 and is offset and extends into the opening 226. As best shown in Figure 22 The rear panel 304 can also have a grounding tab 330 extending from the rear panel 304 into the opening 326 and a spring grounding clip 332 mounted on the grounding tab 330 to provide electrical continuity between the rear panel 304 and the door 334 when the door 334 is in the closed position, as best shown in
[0053] The door 334 can also include one or more latches 244 to prevent the door 234 from being rotated and removed when in the closed position and a locking feature 250 configured to hold the retractable spring loaded pin 246 in the retracted position, as shown in Figure 23
[0054] Referring Figures 24-25 , the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10 is shown with reusable and detachable shipping casters 400. Figures 26-28 An alternate base frame for a data center cabinet is shown. As Figure 27 best shown in FIG. 1, the shipping casters 400 each have a swivel caster 402 and a steel mounting plate 406 secured to the swivel caster 402 by a threaded member 420 that extends from a bottom face 418 of the mounting plate 406 and through a corresponding hole 404 in the swivel caster 402, and a locking nut 422 threaded onto the corresponding threaded member 420. The mounting plate 406 also has a mounting button 410 and a retractable spring pin 416 each extending from a top face 408 of the mounting plate 406. The mounting button 410 is configured to be received and retained in a keyhole 110, 130 of the bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124 of the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10, as described in detail below, and each has a neck portion 412 adapted to pass through a first portion 112, 132 of the corresponding keyhole 110, 130 and a head portion 414 having a diameter greater than the neck portion 412 and adapted to pass through a second portion 114, 134 of the corresponding keyhole 110, 130 but not the first portion 112, 132 to prevent vertical movement of the detachable shipping caster 400 once installed. The retractable spring pin 416 is movable between a retracted position and an extended position, and is biased toward the extended position in which it extends above the upper surface 408 of the mounting plate 406 and is received in a keyhole 116, 136 in the bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124 of the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10, as described below.
[0055] Referring Figure 23 , to receive and secure the detachable shipping casters 400 to the base frame 100 of the data center cabinet 10, the bottom side-to-side beams 104, 124 each have a centrally located, generally rectangular opening 108, 128 formed through the top wall 106, 126 of the bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124 configured to allow the detachable shipping caster 400 to pass through the opening 108, 128. A plurality of keyholes 110, 130 are also formed in each top wall 106, 126 and are configured to receive and retain the mounting button 410 of the detachable shipping caster 400 as described above. As Figure 29As best shown, each bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124 has a first set 160 of keyholes 110, 130 on one side of the opening 108, 128 and a second set 162 of keyholes 110, 130 on the other side of the opening 108, 128, which allows the removable transport caster 400 to be secured at each end of the bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124 and allows a single opening 108, 128 to be used to mount two removable transport casters 400. Keyholes 116, 136 are also formed in each top wall 106, 126 and, as described above, are configured to receive the retractable spring pin 416 of the removable transport caster 400. Each of the first set 160 and the second set 162 of keyholes 110, 130 has a corresponding keyhole 116, 136.
[0056] To install the transport caster 400 on the data center cabinet 10, the data center cabinet 10 is first raised to a height at which the transport caster 400 can be fitted underneath the top wall 106, 126 of the bottom side-to-side beam 126, 124 by adjusting or rotating the leveling legs 144, which allows a single person to easily perform the installation.
[0057] Subsequently, the first transport caster 400 is inserted through the opening 108 in the side-to-side beam 104 until the transport caster 400 is positioned underneath the top wall 106 of the side-to-side beam 104 and is movable longitudinally along the side-to-side beam 104. The transport caster 400 is then slid along the side-to-side beam 104 toward the keyhole 110 of the first set 160 at the first corner of the data center cabinet 10 until the head portion 414 of the mounting button 410 is aligned with the second portion 114 of the keyhole 110 of the first set 160. The transport caster 400 is then raised to insert the mounting button 410 through the keyhole 110. The retractable spring pin 416 is then moved to the retracted position and the transport caster 400 is further slid along the side-to-side beam 104 until the retractable spring pin 416 engages the keyhole 116, which will automatically move to the extended position once the retractable spring pin 416 is aligned with the keyhole 116 and the mounting button 410 is retained in the first portion 112 of the keyhole 110.
[0058] The same process described above can be repeated to secure the second transport caster 400 at the keyhole 110 of the second set 162 to the other side of the side-to-side beam 104, the third transport caster 400 at the keyhole 130 of the first set 160 to the first side of the side-to-side beam 124, and the fourth transport caster 400 at the second set 162 to the second side of the side-to-side beam 124.
[0059] Once all of the transport casters 400 have been installed, the data center cabinet 10 is lowered to rest on the transport casters 400 by adjusting or rotating the leveling legs 144 in the opposite direction from which the data center cabinet 10 was raised.
[0060] To remove the transport casters 400 from the data center cabinet 10 after it has been placed in position, the reverse of the above steps is performed. The data center cabinet 10 is raised by rotating the leveling legs 144 until the transport casters 400 are no longer in contact with the floor. Each transport caster 400 is then removed by moving the retractable spring pin 416 to the retracted position to disengage it from the keyhole 116, 136, sliding the transport caster 400 toward the opening 108, 128 until the head portion 414 of the mounting button 410 is aligned with the second portion 114, 134 of the keyhole 110, 130, lowering the transport caster 400 to disengage the mounting button 410 from the keyhole 110, 130, sliding the transport caster 400 toward the center of the bottom side-to-side beam 104, 124, removing the transport caster 400 through the opening 108, 128, and lowering the data center cabinet 10 to the desired height by rotating the leveling legs 144.
[0061] Alternatively, if the base frame of the cabinet does not include an opening (see Figure 30 ), the cabinet is raised or tilted slightly to provide access under the side-to-side beam. The transport caster 400 is then placed under the side-to-side beam and installed as described above. To remove the transport caster 400, the cabinet is raised or tilted slightly to provide access to the transport caster 400. Once accessible, the transport caster 400 is removed as described above.
[0062] As best shown in , when installed, the transport casters 400 all fit within the footprint of the data center cabinet 10, which helps to keep the data center cabinet 10 as maneuverable as possible, which is desirable in the narrow aisles of a data center. In addition, as shown in , the transport casters 400 do not add any additional height to the data center cabinet 10 compared to conventional factory-installed casters. This can speed up installation because one person can perform the installation and removal of the transport casters 400, with the leveling legs 144 only having to be raised and lowered slightly. The low-height transport casters also facilitate rolling the data center cabinet 10 through doorways or aisles that have a height restriction.
[0063] While particular embodiments of the present application have been shown and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications can be made without departing from this application in its broader aspects. Therefore, the appended claims are to encompass within their scope all such changes and modifications as fall out within the true spirit and scope of this application. What is claimed is:
