Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to a user equipment (UE) including a dual-polarization 5G module. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a UE that establishes radiation at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies while supporting orthogonal polarizations. Background Art
[0002] The next generation of telecommunication infrastructure is enabled by the implementation of 5G networks. 5G networks require new advances in both backbone infrastructure and user equipment (UE), especially handheld devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, etc. Retrofitting existing networks such as 4G / LTE networks can facilitate the implementation of 5G networks at designated frequencies below 6 GHz simply because of the almost identical form factor. However, the associated radio frequency (RF) transceivers (e.g., massive MIMO) for below 6 GHz are different. Practical solutions for implementation in UE can be used for the frequency bands below 6 GHz for 5G networks. Summary of the invention
[0003] Technical issues
[0004] However, the implementation of UEs operating at 5G mmWave frequencies faces challenges. For example, challenges faced by UEs operating at two separate frequencies (such as 28 GHz and 39 GHz) include reduced efficiency, propagation losses, and plant and environmental interactions. Various embodiments of the present disclosure recognize the complexity of incorporating 5G mmWave hardware into existing UEs. These complexities include the presence of additional hardware for seamless communications within 4G / LTE networks, limited physical size, and relatively high interactions with non-metallic and metallic supports at mmWave bands (compared to alternatives below 6 GHz). In particular, interactions with non-metallic and metallic supports at mmWave bands result in challenges including radiation pattern distortion, beam tilt, and gain loss.
[0005] Solution to the problem
[0006] The present disclosure relates to structures for correcting the horizontal polarization of a radiation beam.
[0007] In one embodiment, a user equipment (UE) includes a front surface, a rear surface, a transceiver, and a plurality of electromagnetic strips. The front surface includes a display, and the rear surface includes a cover. The transceiver is between the display and the cover and is configured to transmit signals supporting vertical polarization and horizontal polarization. The plurality of electromagnetic strips are proximate to the cover and are oriented to selectively tilt one of the horizontal polarization or the vertical polarization of the signal.
[0008] In another embodiment, a method of operating a UE includes transmitting, by a transceiver of the UE, a signal supporting vertical polarization and horizontal polarization through a plurality of electromagnetic strips positioned proximate to a cover of the UE, the plurality of electromagnetic strips being positioned to selectively tilt one of the horizontal polarization or the vertical polarization of the signal. The UE includes a front surface including a display and a rear surface including the cover. A transceiver is provided between the cover and the display.
[0009] Advantageous Effects of the Invention
[0010] Therefore, various embodiments of the present disclosure enable alignment of the vertical polarization and the horizontal polarization of the radiation pattern of the antenna array for the UE. In particular, embodiments of the present disclosure enable correction of the horizontal polarization without changing the vertical polarization to align the vertical polarization and the horizontal polarization of the radiation pattern to prevent beam tilt and radiation pattern distortion, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto. The first plurality of UEs include UE 111, which may be located in a small business (SB); UE 112, which may be located in an enterprise (E); UE 113, which may be located in a WiFi hotspot (HS); UE 114, which may be located in a first residence (R); UE 115, which may be located in a second residence (R); UE 116, which may be a mobile device (M), such as a cellular phone, a wireless laptop, a wireless PDA, etc. gNB 103 provides wireless broadband access to network 130 for a second plurality of UEs within coverage area 125 of gNB 103. The second plurality of UEs include UE 115 and UE 116. In some embodiments, one or more of gNBs 101-103 may communicate with each other and with UEs 111-116 using 5G, LTE, LTE-A, WiMAX, WiFi, or other wireless communication technologies.
[0033] Depending on the network type, the term "base station" or "BS" may refer to any component (or set of components) configured to provide wireless access to a network, such as a transmission point (TP), a transmission reception point (TRP), an enhanced base station (eNodeB or gNB), a 5G base station (gNB), a macro cell, a femto cell, a WiFi access point (AP), or other wirelessly enabled devices. A base station may provide wireless access according to one or more wireless communication protocols, for example, 5G 3GPP New Radio Interface / Access (NR), Long Term Evolution (LTE), Advanced LTE (LTE-A), High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, etc. For convenience, the terms "BS" and "TRP" are used interchangeably in this disclosure to refer to network infrastructure components that provide wireless access to remote terminals. In addition, depending on the network type, the term "user equipment" or "UE" may refer to any component, such as a "mobile station", "subscriber station", "remote terminal", "wireless terminal", "reception point", or "user equipment". For convenience, the terms "user equipment" and "UE" used in this disclosure refer to a remote wireless device that wirelessly accesses a BS, whether the UE is a mobile device (such as a mobile phone or smartphone) or is generally considered to be a fixed device (such as a desktop computer or vending machine).
[0034] The dashed lines illustrate the approximate extents of coverage areas 120 and 125, which are shown as approximately circular for purposes of illustration and explanation only. It should be clearly understood that coverage areas such as coverage areas 120 and 125 associated with a gNB may have other shapes, including irregular shapes, depending on the configuration of the gNB and variations in the radio environment associated with natural and man-made obstacles.
[0035] although Figure 1 An example of a wireless network is shown, but Figure 1 Various changes may be made. For example, the wireless network may include any number of gNBs and any number of UEs in any suitable arrangement. gNB 101 may communicate directly with any number of UEs and provide wireless broadband access to network 130 for those UEs. Similarly, each gNB 102-103 may communicate directly with network 130 and provide direct wireless broadband access to network 130 for the UEs. In addition, gNBs 101, 102, and / or 103 may provide access to other or additional external networks, such as an external telephone network or other type of data network.
[0036] Figure 2 An example UE 116 is shown in accordance with various embodiments of the present disclosure. Figure 2 The embodiment of UE 116 shown in FIG. 1 is for illustration only, and Figure 1 UEs 111-115 may have the same or similar configurations. However, UEs have various configurations, and Figure 2 The scope of the present disclosure is not limited to any particular implementation of the UE.
[0037] UE 116 includes one or more transceivers 210, microphone 220, speaker 230, processor 240, input / output (I / O) interface 245, input 250, one or more sensors 255, display 265, and memory 260. Memory 260 includes operating system (OS) program 262 and one or more application programs 264.
[0038] The transceiver 210 includes a transmit (TX) processing circuit 215 for modulating signals, a receive (RX) processing circuit 225 for demodulating signals, and an antenna array 205 including an antenna for transmitting and receiving signals. The antenna array 205 receives signals transmitted by Figure 1 The RX processing circuit 225 receives an incoming signal transmitted by a gNB of the wireless network 100. The transceiver 210 down-converts the incoming RF signal to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) or baseband signal. The IF or baseband signal is transmitted to the RX processing circuit 225, which generates a processed baseband signal by filtering, decoding and / or digitizing the baseband or IF signal. The RX processing circuit 225 sends the processed baseband signal to the speaker 230 (such as for voice data) or to the processor 240 for further processing (such as for web browsing data).
[0039] The TX processing circuit 215 receives analog or digital voice data from the microphone 220 or other outgoing baseband data (such as network data, email, or interactive video game data) from the processor 240. The TX processing circuit 215 encodes, multiplexes, and / or digitizes the outgoing baseband data to generate a processed baseband or IF signal. The RF transceiver 210 receives the outgoing, processed baseband or IF signal from the TX processing circuit 215 and up-converts the baseband or IF signal to an RF signal transmitted by the antenna array 205.
[0040] The processor 240 may include one or more processors or other processing devices and executes an OS program 262 stored in the memory 260 to control the overall operation of the UE 116. For example, the processor 240 may control the reception of forward channel signals and the transmission of reverse channel signals according to well-known principles through the RF transceiver 210, the RX processing circuit 225, and the TX processing circuit 215. In some embodiments, the processor 240 includes at least one microprocessor or microcontroller.
[0041] The processor 240 may execute other processes and programs resident in the memory 260, such as operations for transmitting dual polarized beams as described in embodiments of the present disclosure. As part of executing a process, the processor 240 may move data into or out of the memory 260. In some embodiments, the processor 240 is configured to execute an application 264 based on the OS program 262 or in response to a signal received from a gNB or operator. The processor 240 is also coupled to an I / O interface 245 that provides the UE 116 with the ability to connect to other devices such as laptops and handheld computers. The I / O interface 245 is a communication path between these accessories and the processor 240.
[0042] Processor 240 is also coupled to input 250 (e.g., a keypad, touch screen, buttons, etc.) and display 265. An operator of UE 116 may enter data into UE 116 using input 250. Display 265 may be a liquid crystal display or other display capable of rendering at least limited graphics and / or text, such as from a website.
[0043] The memory 260 is coupled to the processor 240. The memory 260 may include at least one of a random access memory (RAM), a flash memory, or other read-only memory (ROM).
[0044] As described in more detail below, UE 116 may perform transmission and reception of signals using dual polarization beams. Figure 2 An example of UE 116 is shown, but the Figure 2 Make various changes. For example, according to specific needs, Figure 2Various components in the embodiment may be combined, subdivided, or omitted, and additional components may be added. As a specific example, processor 240 may be divided into multiple processors, such as one or more central processing units (CPUs) and one or more graphics processing units (GPUs). Figure 2 UE 116 is shown as a mobile phone or smartphone, but the UE may be configured to operate as other types of mobile or stationary devices.
[0045] Various embodiments of the present disclosure recognize the challenges faced by UE 116 in 5G communication systems. As described herein, horizontal polarization from transceiver 210 may be distorted due in part to the physical proximity of electromagnetic (e.g., metal) and non-metallic fixtures within UE 116. The distortion may tilt the horizontal polarization from transceiver 210 so that it is misaligned with the vertical polarization. Various embodiments of the present disclosure recognize this misalignment and recognize that many solutions to correct horizontal polarization also inadvertently adjust the vertical polarization. Therefore, various embodiments of the present disclosure provide structures for aligning horizontal and vertical polarizations by correcting the horizontal polarization of a radiated beam while maintaining the vertical polarization.
[0046] For example, Figure 3A and Figure 3B A cross-sectional view of a UE according to various embodiments of the present disclosure is shown. Figure 3A and Figure 3B The embodiment of the UE 116 shown in FIG. 1 is for illustration only and should not be construed as limiting. Figure 3A and Figure 3B The UE 116 shown in FIG. 1 may be Figure 1 and Figure 2 UE 116 is shown in FIG.
[0047] like Figure 3A As shown, UE 116 includes a display 265 and a cover 270. Display 265 and cover 270 together form a housing of UE 116. Components of UE 116 including TX processing circuitry 215, RX processing circuitry 225, processor 240, and memory 260 may be placed between display 265 and cover 270.
[0048] like Figure 3A and 3B As shown, the transceiver 210 is placed between the display 265 and the cover 270. The transceiver 210 is provided at the edge of the UE 116 for transmitting and receiving signals. The transceiver 210 includes an antenna array 205 having a radiation pattern 300, and the radiation pattern 300 has a preset orientation based on the orientation of the antenna array 205 within the UE 116.
[0049] The radiation pattern 300 supports a pair of orthogonal polarizations in both the vertical direction 310 and the horizontal direction 320. The vertical polarization 310 exhibits the desired performance in the desired direction, while the horizontal polarization 320 does not exhibit the desired performance in the desired direction. Figure 3B As shown, the horizontal polarization 320 is tilted toward an undesired direction, causing the vertical polarization 310 and the horizontal polarization 320 to be misaligned. Various embodiments of the present disclosure recognize that the misalignment between the vertical polarization 310 and the horizontal polarization 320 may present challenges caused by such polarization selectivity. In particular, embodiments of the present disclosure recognize that the misalignment may hinder the millimeter wave radiation from the antenna array 205, resulting in radiation pattern distortion, beam tilt, and gain loss for the UE 116.
[0050] Therefore, various embodiments of the present disclosure enable alignment of the vertical polarization 310 and the horizontal polarization 320 of the radiation pattern 300 of the antenna array 205. Specifically, embodiments of the present disclosure enable correction of the horizontal polarization 320 without changing the vertical polarization 310 to align the vertical polarization 310 and the horizontal polarization 320 of the radiation pattern 300 to prevent beam tilt and radiation pattern distortion.
[0051] Figure 4A and 4B A semi-metallic screen is shown according to various embodiments of the present disclosure. The embodiments of the semi-metallic screen are for illustration only and should not be construed as limiting. For example, various features may be added to or omitted from the semi-metallic screen according to the present disclosure.
[0052] Figure 4A A semi-metallic screen 400 according to various embodiments of the present disclosure is shown. The semi-metallic screen 400 includes a plurality of electromagnetic strips 410. Figure 5A , Figure 5B and Figure 7 Multiple electromagnetic strips 410 are described in more detail in the description of . In various embodiments, multiple electromagnetic strips 410 can be provided in UE 116, such as inside cover 270 or between cover 270 and display 265. The electromagnetic strips 410 described herein can be formed using any electromagnetic or conductive material, for example, metals such as copper, silver, aluminum, iron, alloys, etc.; ceramics; polymers; etc.
[0053] like Figure 4A As shown, the electromagnetic strips 410 of the semi-metallic screen 400 are arranged perpendicular to the incident wave polarization (k) (E1). When the electromagnetic strips 410 are arranged perpendicular to the incident wave polarization, the electric field does not induce current on the electromagnetic strips 410. Therefore, the incident wave advances through or propagates through the semi-metallic screen 400. Therefore, the semi-metallic screen 400 is actually invisible relative to the incident wave.
[0054] Figure 4B A semi-metallic screen 450 according to various embodiments of the present disclosure is shown. The semi-metallic screen 450 includes a plurality of electromagnetic strips 420. The plurality of electromagnetic strips 420 may be the same or identical to the plurality of electromagnetic strips 410. Figure 5A , Figure 5B and Figure 7 Multiple electromagnetic strips 420 are described in more detail in the description of UE 116 . In various embodiments, multiple electromagnetic strips 410 may be provided in UE 116 , such as inside cover 270 or between cover 270 and display 265 .
[0055] like Figure 4B As shown, the electromagnetic strips 420 of the half-metallic screen 450 are arranged parallel to the (E2) incident wave polarization (kA). When the electromagnetic strips 420 are arranged parallel to the incident wave polarization, the electric field induces current on the electromagnetic strips 420. Therefore, the incident wave is reflected off the half-metallic screen 450 as shown by the reflected incident wave polarization kB. In other words, the electromagnetic strips 420 can be used as polarization mirrors.
[0056] Figure 5A and 5B A semi-metallic screen 500 is shown in accordance with various embodiments of the present disclosure. The plurality of electromagnetic strips 505 may be Figure 4A and Figure 4B Electromagnetic strip 410 or electromagnetic strip 420, respectively. In some embodiments, multiple electromagnetic strips 505 are provided in a parallel or substantially parallel manner. For example, Figure 5B As shown, each of the electromagnetic strips 505a-505n is provided parallel to the respective adjacent electromagnetic strips. Electromagnetic strip 505a is provided parallel to electromagnetic strip 505b. Likewise, electromagnetic strip 505b is provided parallel to both electromagnetic strip 505a and electromagnetic strip 505c.
[0058] Between each electromagnetic strip 505 is a space 508. For example, electromagnetic strip 505a and electromagnetic strip 505b are separated by space 508. In some embodiments, space 508 can be approximately the same width as each electromagnetic strip. In other embodiments, space 508 can have a width that is greater or less than the width of electromagnetic strip 505.
[0059] Although the semi-metallic screen 500 Figure 5A and Figure 5B 500 is shown as including substantially parallel electromagnetic strips 505, but a semi-metallic screen 500 may be provided in various embodiments. For example, Figure 5C-5F Various embodiments of electromagnetic strip 505 are shown.
[0060] Figure 5C An alternative semi-metallic screen is shown according to various embodiments of the present disclosure.
