[0002] This patent application claims priority to Chinese PCT application No. PCT / CN2022 / 093267, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR SIGNAL STRENGTH MONITORING”, filed by Tao et al. on May 17, 2022, which is assigned to the assignee of this application. Background Art
[0003] The following relates to wireless communications, including techniques for signal strength monitoring.
[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and the like. These systems can be multiple access systems that can support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). A wireless network (e.g., a wireless local area network (WLAN), such as a Wi-Fi (i.e., an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11) network) may include an access point (AP) that can communicate with one or more stations (STAs) or mobile devices. An AP may be coupled to a network such as the Internet, and may enable mobile devices to communicate via the network (or communicate with other devices coupled to the access point). A wireless device may communicate bidirectionally with a network device. For example, in a WLAN, a STA may communicate with an associated AP via a downlink (DL) and an uplink (UL). A DL (or forward link) may refer to a communication link from an AP to a STA, and a UL (or reverse link) may refer to a communication link from a station to an AP.
[0005] In some cases, the STA may provide feedback to the AP in response to the DL transmission. However, for some use cases, conventional feedback techniques may be insufficient or suboptimal in some current configurations. Summary of the invention
[0006] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices, or apparatuses that support technology for signal strength monitoring. In general, the described technology provisions enable a wireless station (STA) to monitor characteristics of signaling from an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network (WLAN) and adjust transmission parameters based on the monitoring. In some examples, the STA may monitor the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of the downlink (DL) transmission from the AP. If the RSSI of the signaling from the AP drops below a first threshold, the STA may send a feedback message in a first portion of the bandwidth and refrain from sending a duplicate feedback message in a second portion of the bandwidth. If the RSSI subsequently improves and rises above a second threshold, the STA may return to sending duplicate feedback messages that span the bandwidth together.
[0007] In some examples, the STA may determine whether to enable or disable duplicate feedback messages for signaling based on a feedback message transmit power threshold. The duplicate feedback message may be associated with a first transmit power, and the single feedback message in the first portion of the bandwidth may be associated with a second transmit power. The STA may determine a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power, and may compare the difference to the feedback message transmit power threshold. If the difference is greater than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may continue to send (or return to sending) duplicate feedback messages. If the difference is less than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may disable duplicate feedback messages and may instead send feedback messages in the first portion of the bandwidth.
[0008] Additionally or alternatively, the STA may monitor the decoding rate of packets received in the signaling. If the decoding rate drops below a first threshold, the STA may send a single feedback message without duplication. If the decoding rate subsequently increases above a second threshold, the STA may return to sending duplicate feedback messages that span the bandwidth together. Additionally or alternatively, the STA may monitor signaling on two connected transmit chains. If the decoding rate drops below a rate threshold and the difference between the RSSIs of the two chains is above a difference threshold, the STA may increase the output power of the chain with the lower RSSI to give additional link budget for transmission to the AP.

The code may include instructions executable by a processor to: monitor a signal from an access point; compare a characteristic of the signal to a threshold, the characteristic being determined based on the monitoring and being one of: a received signal strength indicator associated with the signal or a coding rate associated with a modulation and coding scheme of a set of packets received in the signal; send a first instance of a feedback message related to the signal in a first portion of a bandwidth; and refrain from concurrently sending a second instance of the feedback message in a second portion of the bandwidth based on the characteristic being less than the threshold.

[0050] In a wireless local area network (WLAN), a wireless device, which may be referred to as a station (STA), may communicate with an associated access point (AP) via a downlink (DL) and an uplink (UL). In some cases, when the received signal strength drops below a threshold (e.g., -80 decibel-milliwatts (dBm)), the STA may experience a reduction in DL throughput from the AP. The reduction in throughput may be based on reduced reception at the AP. For example, the AP may reduce the decoding rate of DL transmissions based on feedback messages received at the AP, where the received signal strength of the feedback messages may drop below the sensitivity point at the AP. Additionally or alternatively, the UL throughput may be reduced based on the orientation of the STA's antenna relative to the AP. For example, the imbalance of the transmit power of the STA's antenna may be based on the orientation of the STA's antenna. It may be beneficial to enable the STA to adjust feedback, transmit parameters, or both to improve the throughput and reliability of communication with the AP.
[0051] According to the techniques described herein, a STA may monitor characteristics of signaling from an AP and adjust transmission parameters based on the monitoring. In some examples, a STA may monitor a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of a DL transmission from an AP. If the RSSI of the signaling from the AP drops below a first threshold (e.g., -80 dBm), the STA may send a feedback message in a first portion of the bandwidth (e.g., a feedback message spanning 20 MHz in an 80 megahertz (MHz) or 160 MHz bandwidth) and refrain from sending duplicate feedback messages in the remainder of the bandwidth. If the RSSI subsequently improves and rises above a second threshold (e.g., -76 dBm), the STA may return to sending duplicate feedback messages spanning the bandwidth (e.g., multiple feedback messages each spanning 20 MHz in an 80 MHz or 160 MHz bandwidth).
[0052] Additionally or alternatively, the STA may monitor the decoding rate of packets received in the signaling. If the decoding rate drops below a first threshold (e.g., an index of a modulation and coding scheme (MCS), such as MCS4), the STA may send a single feedback message without duplication. If the decoding rate subsequently increases above a second threshold (e.g., the number of spatial streams, such as two spatial streams), the STA may return to sending duplicate feedback messages across the bandwidth.
[0053] In some cases, the STA may dynamically enable or disable duplicate feedback messages for signaling, for example, based on a feedback message transmit power threshold. The duplicate feedback message may be configured with a first transmit power, while a single feedback message (e.g., without duplication) in the first portion of the bandwidth may be configured with a second transmit power. The STA may determine a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power, and may compare the difference to the feedback message transmit power threshold. If the difference is greater than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may continue to send (or return to sending) duplicate feedback messages. If the difference is less than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may disable duplicate feedback messages and may instead send a single feedback message in the first portion of the bandwidth.
[0054] Various aspects of the present disclosure are first described in the context of wireless communication systems. Various aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated by and described with reference to transmission schemes, process flows, device diagrams, system diagrams, and flow charts involving techniques for signal strength monitoring.
[0055] Figure 1 A wireless communication system 100 supporting techniques for signal strength monitoring according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a WLAN (also referred to as a Wi-Fi network) configured according to various aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communication system 100 may include an AP 105 and a plurality of associated STAs 115, which may represent devices such as mobile stations, personal digital assistants (PDAs), other handheld devices, netbooks, notebook computers, tablet computers, laptops, display devices (e.g., TVs, computer monitors, etc.), printers, etc. The AP 105 and the associated STAs 115 may represent a basic service set (BSS) or an extended service set (ESS). The various STAs 115 in the network can communicate with each other through the AP 105. Also shown is a coverage area 110 of the AP 105, which may represent a basic service area (BSA) of the wireless communication system 100. Extended network stations associated with the wireless communication system 100 may be connected to a wired or wireless distribution system that may allow multiple APs 105 to be connected in an ESS.
[0056] Although not in Figure 1100, but the STA 115 may be located at the intersection of more than one coverage area 110 and may be associated with more than one AP 105. A single AP 105 and a set of associated STAs 115 may be referred to as a BSS. An ESS is a collection of connected BSSs. A distribution system (not shown) may be used to connect the APs 105 in an ESS. In some cases, the coverage area 110 of the AP 105 may be divided into sectors (also not shown). The wireless communication system 100 may include APs 105 of different types (e.g., urban areas, home networks, etc.) with different and overlapping coverage areas 110. Two STAs 115 may also communicate directly via a direct wireless link 125, regardless of whether the two STAs 115 are in the same coverage area 110. Examples of direct wireless links 120 may include Wi-Fi direct connections, Wi-Fi tunneling direct link setup (TDLS) links, and other group connections. The STA 115 and the AP 105 may communicate according to WLAN radio and baseband protocols for the physical layer and the medium access control (MAC) layer from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and versions including, but not limited to, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ad, 802.11ah, 802.11ax, etc. In other specific implementations, a peer-to-peer connection or an ad hoc network may be implemented within the wireless communication system 100.
[0057] In some cases, a STA 115 (or AP 105) may be detected by the central AP 105, but may not be detected by other STAs 115 in the coverage area 110 of the central AP 105. For example, one STA 115 may be at one end of the coverage area 110 of the central AP 105, while another STA 115 may be at the other end. Thus, the two STAs 115 may communicate with the AP 105, but may not receive each other's transmissions. This may cause transmission collisions of the two STAs 115 in a contention-based environment (e.g., carrier sense multiple access / collision avoidance (CSMA / CA)) because the STAs 115 may not refrain from transmitting over each other. STAs 115 whose transmissions cannot be identified but are within the same coverage area 110 may be referred to as hidden nodes. CSMA / CA can be supplemented by the exchange of ready-to-send (RTS) packets sent by the transmitting STA 115 (or AP 105) and clear-to-send (CTS) packets sent by the receiving STA 115 (or AP 105). This can alert other devices within the range of the transmitter and receiver not to transmit during the duration of the main transmission. Thus, RTS / CTS can help alleviate the hidden node problem.
[0058] According to the techniques described herein, STA 115 may monitor characteristics of signaling from AP 105 and adjust transmission parameters based on the monitoring. In some examples, STA 115 may monitor the RSSI of DL transmissions from AP 105 over direct wireless link 120. If the RSSI of signaling from AP 105 drops below a first threshold (e.g., -80 dBm), STA 115 may send feedback messages in a first portion of the bandwidth (e.g., feedback messages spanning 20 MHz in an 80 MHz or 160 MHz bandwidth) and refrain from sending duplicate feedback messages in the remainder of the bandwidth. If RSSI subsequently improves and rises above a second threshold (e.g., -76 dBm), STA 115 may return to sending duplicate feedback messages (e.g., non-high throughput ACK messages) spanning the bandwidth (e.g., multiple feedback messages each spanning 20 MHz in an 80 MHz or 160 MHz bandwidth).
[0059] Additionally or alternatively, STA 115 may monitor the decoding rate of packets received in the signaling. If the decoding rate drops below a first threshold (e.g., an index of an MCS, such as MCS4), STA 115 may send a single feedback message without duplication. If the decoding rate subsequently increases above a second threshold (e.g., the number of spatial streams, such as two spatial streams), STA 115 may return to sending duplicate feedback messages across the bandwidth. Additionally or alternatively, STA 115 may monitor signaling on two connected transmit chains. If the decoding rate drops below a rate threshold and the difference between the RSSIs of the two chains is above a difference threshold, STA 115 may increase the output power of the chain with the lower RSSI to give additional link budget for transmission to AP 105 on the direct wireless link 120.
[0060] In some cases, the STA may send a duplicate feedback message according to a first transmit power, and may send a single feedback message (e.g., a feedback message without duplication) according to a second transmit power. The STA may determine whether to utilize duplication in the feedback message based on a comparison of the first transmit power and the second transmit power. For example, the STA may determine a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power. The STA may compare the difference with a feedback message transmit power threshold. If the difference is greater than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may utilize duplicate feedback messages (e.g., may continue to transmit, or may return to transmitting duplicate feedback messages). If the difference is less than the feedback message transmit power threshold, the STA may disable duplication of feedback messages, and may instead transmit feedback messages in the first portion of the bandwidth.
[0061] Figure 2An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports techniques for signal strength monitoring according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 may be a WLAN (also referred to as a Wi-Fi network) configured according to various aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communication system 200 may implement the Figure 1 Aspects of the wireless communication system 100 described above may be implemented or may be implemented by the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 200 may include the AP 105-a and the STA 115-a, which may be reference Figure 1 Examples of corresponding devices described herein. The wireless communication system 200 can support improvements to communication throughput and reliability, among other benefits.
[0062] The AP 105-a may transmit to the STA 115-a on the DL 205, and the STA 115-a may transmit to the AP 105-a on the UL 210. In some examples, the STA 115-a may transmit in the bandwidth 230, where each portion 225 of the bandwidth 230 may be associated with a corresponding channel of the UL 210. For example, the portion 225-a may be associated with a primary channel of the UL 210.
[0063] In some cases, when the RSSI drops below a threshold (e.g., -80 dBm), the throughput on the DL 205 may be reduced (e.g., to 300 megabits per second (Mbps)). The reduction in throughput may be based on a reduction in the decoding rate of packets received on the DL 205. For example, the STA 115-a may receive packets associated with a reduced MCS (e.g., MCS1 or MCS2, which may be less than MCS4) or on a reduced number of spatial streams (e.g., one spatial stream instead of two spatial streams). In some cases, the reduction in throughput may be based on reduced reception at the AP 105-a. For example, the AP 105-a may receive a portion of the feedback message 220 (e.g., a portion less than 20 MHz in the 80 MHz or 160 MHz bandwidth 230), and the RSSI of the signaling received at the AP 105-a may be less than expected (e.g., 9 dB lower). The reduced RSSI may be less than the sensitivity point of the feedback frame rate (eg, 24 Mbps), and the AP 105 - a may respond by reducing throughput on the DL 205 .
[0064] According to the techniques described herein, STA 115-a may monitor characteristics of signaling from AP 105-a and adjust transmission parameters based on the monitoring. In some examples, STA 115-a may monitor the RSSI of signal 215-a on DL 205. If the RSSI of signal 215-a is below a first threshold (e.g., -80 dBm), STA 115-a may send feedback message 220-a (e.g., an acknowledgement (ACK) message) in portion 225-a of bandwidth 230 (e.g., a primary channel of UL 210) and refrain from sending a copy of feedback message 220-a in the remaining portion 225 of bandwidth 230 (e.g., portions 225-b, 225-c, 225-d, or any combination thereof). For example, feedback message 220-a may span 20 MHz of an 80 MHz bandwidth 230.
[0065] In some examples, STA 115-a may then monitor signal 215-b on DL 205. If the RSSI of signal 215-b is above a second threshold (e.g., -76 dBm), STA 115-a may send a copy of feedback message 220-b (e.g., an ACK message, such as a non-high throughput ACK message) in portion 225 across bandwidth 230. For example, each copy of feedback message 220-b may be sent in a respective portion 225 spanning 20 MHz of 80 MHz bandwidth 230.
[0066] Additionally or alternatively, STA 115-a may monitor a decoding rate of packets received in signal 215-a. If the decoding rate is below a first threshold (e.g., an index of an MCS, such as MCS4), STA 115-a may send feedback message 220-a without duplication in portion 225-a. If the decoding rate of subsequent signal 215-b is above a second threshold (e.g., a number of spatial streams, such as two spatial streams), STA 115-a may send a duplication of feedback message 220-b in portion 225 across bandwidth 230.
[0067] In some cases, STA 115-a may dynamically enable or disable replication (e.g., frequency-based replication) of a feedback message (e.g., feedback message 220) related to a signal (e.g., signal 215). The first feedback message type may refer to a feedback message type that uses frequency-based replication to send a feedback message (such as feedback message 220-b). The second feedback message type may refer to a feedback message type that does not use replication to send a feedback message (such as feedback message 220-a). STA 115-a may send a feedback message of the first feedback message type (e.g., a non-high throughput ACK message) according to a first transmit power P. non-HT, and a feedback message of a second feedback message type (eg, a feedback message spanning a 20 MHz portion of the bandwidth 230) may be sent according to a second transmit power P 20_MHz .
[0068] STA 115-a may determine whether to utilize (e.g., enable or disable) replication in the feedback message based on a comparison of the first transmit power and the second transmit power. For example, STA 115-a may monitor signal 215 on DL 205. To send feedback of signal 215, STA 115-a may increase the first transmit power P associated with the first feedback message type. non-HT The second transmission power P associated with the second feedback message type 20_MHz STA 115-a may determine the difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power, for example, may determine P non-HT -P 20_MHz The value of .
[0069] STA 115-a may compare the difference with a threshold value P associated with a threshold value. T The comparison is made, and the threshold may include a feedback message transmission power threshold or an example of a feedback message transmission power threshold. The STA 115-a may select a feedback message type for transmission of the feedback message 220 based on the comparison. For example, the STA 115-a may select a non-high throughput ACK message (e.g., feedback message 220-b) or a 20 MHz ACK message (e.g., feedback message 220-a) as the feedback message 220 based on whether the difference satisfies the threshold.
[0070] For example, if the threshold is not met (e.g., if STA 115-a may then send a feedback message 220 (such as feedback message 220-b) according to the first feedback message type. More specifically, STA 115-a may enable frequency-based replication of feedback message 220 based on the difference being less than a threshold. STA 115-a may send a replication (e.g., example) of feedback message 220-b in a portion 225 spanning bandwidth 230. For example, each replication of feedback message 220-b may be sent in a corresponding portion 225 spanning 20 MHz in 80 MHz bandwidth 230. Each replication of the feedback message may include feedback of signal 215-a.
[0071] Alternatively, if a threshold is met (e.g., if STA 115-a may then send feedback message 220 (such as feedback message 220-a) according to the second feedback message type. STA 115-a may disable frequency-based duplication of feedback message 220 based on the difference being greater than a threshold. Thus, STA 115-a may send feedback message 220-a in portion 225-a of bandwidth 230, and may refrain from concurrently sending duplication of feedback message 220-a in remaining portions 225 (e.g., portions 225-b, 225-c, 225-d, or any combination thereof) of bandwidth 230. Feedback message 220-a may span 20 MHz of the 80 MHz bandwidth 230.
[0072] Figure 3 An example of a wireless communication system 300 that supports techniques for signal strength monitoring according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 300 may be a WLAN (also referred to as a Wi-Fi network) configured according to various aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communication system 300 may implement the Figure 1 Aspects of the wireless communication system 100 described above may be implemented or may be implemented by the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 300 may include the AP 105-b and the STA 115-b, which may be reference Figure 1 Examples of corresponding devices described herein. The wireless communication system 300 can support improvements in communication throughput and reliability, among other benefits.
[0073] The AP 105-b and the STA 115-b may communicate over transmit chains 305-a and 305-b. Each transmit chain 305 may be associated with a respective antenna at the STA 115-b. In some cases, the throughput on the UL of the transmit chain 305 may be reduced (e.g., below 100 Mbps) based on the orientation of the antenna at the STA 115-b relative to the AP 105-b. For example, based on the transmit mode of the antenna (e.g., radiating mode or conducted mode), the antenna may not be able to maintain the coding rate or number of spatial streams associated with the UL, and the transmission may drop to using a lower coding rate (e.g., MCS) or fewer spatial streams, which may result in a reduction in throughput.
[0074] According to the techniques described herein, STA 115-b may monitor signals 315-a and 315-b on transmit chains 305-a and 305-b, respectively. In some examples, signals 315-a and 315-b may be instances of the same signal 315 (e.g., instances of a DL message), or signals 315-a and 315-b may be different signals 315. If the decoding rate of signal 315-a, signal 315-b, or both is less than a rate threshold (e.g., MCS2 with two spatial streams), and the difference between the RSSIs of the signals 315 is greater than a difference threshold (e.g., 5 dB), STA 115 may increase the output power (e.g., transmit power) of the transmit chain 305 with the lower RSSI to give additional link budget for transmission to AP 105-b. For example, if the RSSI of signal 315 - a on transmit chain 305 - a is 5 dB less than the RSI of signal 315 - b on transmit chain 305 - b , STA 115 - b may increase the output power of transmit chain 305 - a by 2–3 dB to improve UL throughput.
[0075] Figure 4 An example of a process flow 400 that supports techniques for signal strength monitoring in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow 400 may implement or be implemented by one or more aspects of the wireless communication systems 100, 200, and 300. For example, the process flow 400 may include example operations associated with one or more of the AP 105-c or the STA 115-c, which may be a reference Figures 1 to 3 Examples of corresponding devices described herein. In the following description of process flow 400, operations between AP 105-c and STA 115-c may be performed in an order different from the example order shown, or operations performed by AP 105-c and STA 115-c may be performed in a different order or at a different time. Some operations may also be omitted from process flow 400, and other operations may be added to process flow 400. Operations performed by AP 105-c and STA 115-c may support improvements to feedback operations and, in some examples, may promote improvements to communication reliability and other benefits.
[0076] At 405, the STA 115-c may monitor, for example, on a DL channel, for a signal from the AP 105-c. At 410, the STA 115-c may receive the signal.
[0077] At 415, STA 115-c may compare a characteristic of the signal to a threshold. For example, the characteristic may be an RSSI associated with the signal, and the threshold may be an RSSI threshold (e.g., -80 dBm). Additionally or alternatively, the characteristic may be a coding rate associated with an MCS of a set of packets received in the signal, and the threshold may be a coding rate threshold (e.g., an index of the MCS, such as MCS4). In some examples, the coding rate may be based on the number of spatial streams associated with the signal.
[0078] At 420, the STA 115-c may send a feedback message (e.g., an ACK message) related to the signal to the AP 105-c. The STA 115-c may send an instance of the feedback message in a first portion of the bandwidth (e.g., a primary channel of the UL, which may span 20 MHz of the 80 MHz bandwidth or the 160 MHz bandwidth). In some examples, based on a characteristic of the signal satisfying a threshold (e.g., the characteristic being less than the threshold), the STA 115-c may refrain from concurrently sending a second instance of the feedback message in a second portion of the bandwidth. For example, the STA 115-c may refrain from sending a copy of the feedback message in the remaining portion of the bandwidth.
[0079] In some examples, at 420, the STA 115-c may transmit a feedback message according to a first feedback message type (e.g., frequency-based duplicate feedback, such as a non-high throughput ACK message type) or a second feedback message type (e.g., non-duplicate feedback) based on a first transmit power associated with the first feedback type and a second transmit power associated with the second feedback type. For example, based on monitoring the signal at 405, the STA 115-c may determine a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power. The STA 115-c may compare the difference with a threshold (e.g., a feedback message transmit power threshold) to determine whether the difference satisfies a threshold associated with the threshold. The STA 115-c may select a feedback message type for transmission of the feedback message based on the comparison.
[0080] If the difference satisfies the threshold, then at 420, the STA 115-c may send a feedback message in the first portion of the bandwidth according to the second feedback message type. Here, the STA 115-c may refrain from sending a copy of the feedback message in the remaining portion of the bandwidth. For example, if the difference is less than the threshold, the STA 115-c may refrain from concurrently sending a second instance of the feedback message in the second portion of the bandwidth.
[0081] If the difference fails to meet the threshold, then at 420, STA 115-c may send a feedback message according to the first feedback message type. For example, STA 115-a may send an instance of the feedback message in a first portion of the bandwidth and may send a second instance of the feedback message in a second portion of the bandwidth. The instance of the feedback message may include an ACK message or an example of an ACK message, and the second instance of the feedback message may include a copy of the ACK message or an example of a copy of the ACK message. The instance of the feedback message and the second instance of the feedback message may span the bandwidth.
[0082] In some examples, at 425, STA 115-c may monitor for a second signal from AP 105-c, and may receive the second signal at 430. In some examples, at 435, STA 115-c may compare the same characteristic of the second signal to a second threshold. For example, if the characteristic is an RSSI of the second signal, the second threshold may be a second RSSI threshold (e.g., -76 dBm). Additionally or alternatively, if the characteristic is a coding rate of the second signal, the second threshold may be a second coding rate threshold (e.g., the number of spatial streams, such as two spatial streams).
[0083] In some examples, at 440, the STA 115-c may send a second feedback message (e.g., an ACK message, such as a non-high throughput ACK message) related to the second signal. The second feedback message may be sent using frequency-based replication based on a characteristic of the second signal being greater than a second threshold. In some examples, the STA 115-c may send a replication of the second feedback message in a portion spanning a bandwidth. For example, each replication of the second feedback message may span 20 MHz of an 80 MHz bandwidth or a 160 MHz bandwidth. The operations performed by the STA 115-c and the AP 105-c may support improvements in communication throughput and reliability, as well as other benefits.
[0084] Figure 5 An example of a process flow 500 that supports techniques for signal strength monitoring in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow 500 may implement or be implemented by one or more aspects of the wireless communication systems 100, 200, and 300. For example, the process flow 500 may include example operations associated with one or more of the AP 105-d or the STA 115-d, which may be a reference Figures 1 to 3Examples of corresponding devices described herein. In the following description of process flow 500, operations between AP 105-d and STA 115-d may be performed in an order different from the example order shown, or operations performed by AP 105-d and STA 115-d may be performed in a different order or at a different time. Some operations may also be omitted from process flow 500, and other operations may be added to process flow 500. Operations performed by AP 105-d and STA 115-d may support improvements to feedback operations and, in some examples, may promote improvements to communication reliability and other benefits.
[0085] At 505, STA 115-d may monitor a first signal on a first transmit chain and a second signal on a second transmit chain, wherein STA 115-d and AP 105-d may communicate using the transmit chains. In some examples, each transmit chain may be associated with a corresponding antenna at STA 115-d. In some examples, the transmit chains may be connected.
[0086] At 510, STA 115-d may receive a first signal and a second signal from AP 105-d. In some examples, the first signal and the second signal may be instances of the same signal (eg, instances of a DL message), or the first signal and the second signal may be different signals.
[0087] At 515, STA 115-d may compare the decoding rate to a rate threshold. The decoding rate may be associated with the first signal, the second signal, or both. For example, the decoding rate may be associated with the MCS of the set of packets received in the first signal, the second signal, or both. In some examples, the rate threshold may be an index associated with the MCS, such as MCS2. Additionally or alternatively, the decoding rate may be associated with the number of spatial streams associated with the transmit chain, and the rate threshold may be the number of spatial streams (e.g., two spatial streams).
[0088] At 520, STA 115-d may determine a difference between a first RSSI of the first signal and a second RSSI of the second signal and compare the difference to a difference threshold (e.g., 5 dB). In some examples, STA 115-d may determine the difference based on monitoring the first signal and the second signal.
[0089] At 525, the STA 115-d may increase the transmit power of the transmit chain with the lower RSSI to give additional link budget for transmission to the AP 105-d. In some examples, the STA 115-d may increase the transmit power of the transmit chain with the lower RSSI by 2–3 dB to improve UL throughput. The STA 115-d may increase the transmit power based on the decoded rate being less than a rate threshold and the difference being greater than a difference threshold.
[0090] In some examples, at 530, STA 115-d may transmit a third signal to AP 105-d on the transmit chain with the lower RSSI according to the increased transmit power. Operations performed by STA 115-d and AP 105-d may support improvements to communication throughput and reliability, among other benefits.
