Abstract
Description
[0001] This application is a divisional application of the international application PCT / US2020 / 047154, whose invention name is "Fluid delivery device with an extended catheter and method of use thereof" and whose international application date is August 20, 2020, and which has entered the Chinese national phase and is a Chinese invention patent application No. 202080071750.1.
[0002] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0003] This application claims priority to and the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 889,252, filed on August 20, 2019, entitled “Fluid Transfer Devices with Extended Length Catheters and Methods of Using the Same,” the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0004] Embodiments described herein generally relate to fluid delivery devices. More particularly, embodiments described herein relate to fluid delivery devices having controlled size and / or conduit length. Background Art
[0005] Many medical procedures and / or surgical procedures include inserting an access device or fluid delivery device into a portion of the body. For example, a catheter and / or other lumen-defining device may be inserted into and / or through a vascular structure to access various parts of the body. In some cases, such catheters, access devices, and / or the like may have relatively long catheter lengths, which may present challenges during use. For example, in some cases, catheters and / or access devices used in interventional cardiology may have lengths of 300 centimeters (cm) or more, which may make the use of these devices cumbersome and / or difficult. In addition, the length of such catheters and / or access devices may result in undesirable bending, buckling, and / or kinking.
[0006] In other cases, catheters and / or other lumen-defining devices may be used to deliver fluids to or from a patient. In some cases, it may be desirable to maintain a relatively small and / or compact form factor of such a fluid delivery device to increase ease of use and / or reduce manufacturing and / or material costs. However, in some such cases, maintaining a relatively small and / or compact form factor may result in an undesirable reduction in the effective length and / or "reach" of the catheter included in the device.
[0007] For example, a peripheral intravenous catheter or line (PIV) can be inserted into a patient and used to infuse fluids and medications. In general, PIVs are not designed for blood sampling, and their failure rates typically increase with increasing indwelling time (e.g., due to blockage, accumulation, debris, clots, fibrin, etc.). However, in some cases, a fluid delivery device can be connected to the proximal portion of the PIV (e.g., the portion outside the body) and can be used to advance the catheter through the indwelling PIV to a position where the distal end of the catheter extends beyond the distal end of the indwelling PIV. Although such a device can position the distal end of the catheter in a portion of the vein that receives blood flow (which may otherwise be blocked or restricted by the presence of the indwelling PIV), some such devices may have a relatively long length to allow the catheter to be placed outside the PIV. In addition, the length of such a device may be further increased when the device is configured for use with an extended indwelling or midline PIV and / or a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC).
[0008] Therefore, there is a need for a compact fluid delivery device having a controllable size and / or catheter length. Summary of the invention
[0009] Methods and devices for delivering fluid to or from a patient through a placed peripheral intravenous catheter using a relatively compact device are described herein. In some embodiments, a device includes a housing, a catheter, and an actuator. The housing has a first port and a second port that can be coupled to an indwelling vascular access device. The catheter has a proximal portion and a distal portion, and it is at least partially disposed in the housing so that the first port of the housing receives the proximal portion of the catheter. The actuator is partially disposed in the housing to selectively engage the portion of the catheter in the housing. The actuator is configured to rotate an angular distance relative to the housing to move the distal portion of the catheter from a first position in which the distal portion of the catheter is disposed in the housing to a linear distance to a second position in which the catheter extends through the second port so that when the second port is coupled to the indwelling vascular access device, the distal portion of the catheter is located distal to the indwelling vascular access device. The linear distance is greater than the angular distance. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0032] The embodiments described herein can be used for any suitable medical procedure and / or surgical procedure. For example, in some embodiments, devices such as those described herein can be used as access devices during surgical procedures, etc. In other embodiments, devices such as those described herein can be used to transport fluids between a patient and any external connection, fluid source, fluid reservoir, etc. As an example, any embodiment described herein can be used, for example, to deliver fluids to or from a patient via an indwelling peripheral intravenous infusion line (PIV) (or other suitable access device or port). In such an embodiment, the device can be connected to an indwelling or placed PIV, and can be manipulated to advance the catheter through the PIV to position the distal portion of the catheter outside the distal end of the PIV (e.g., within a target vein). In some embodiments, the device can have a relatively compact form factor, but is arranged so that the compact form factor does not limit and / or reduce the length of the catheter, does not "reach" or "throw" the catheter, as described in further detail herein.
[0033] In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a housing, a catheter, and an actuator. The housing has a first port and a second port that can be connected to an indwelling vascular access device. The catheter has a proximal portion and a distal portion, and it is at least partially disposed in the housing so that the first port of the housing receives the proximal portion of the catheter. The actuator is partially disposed in the housing to selectively engage the portion of the catheter in the housing. The actuator is configured to rotate an angular distance relative to the housing to move the distal portion of the catheter from a first position in which the distal portion of the catheter is disposed in the housing to a linear distance to a second position in which the catheter extends through the second port so that when the second port is connected to the indwelling vascular access device, the distal portion of the catheter is located distal to the indwelling vascular access device. The linear distance is greater than the angular distance.
[0034] In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a housing, a catheter, and an actuator. The housing has a first port and a second port that can be connected to an indwelling vascular access device. The catheter has a proximal portion and a distal portion, and the catheter is at least partially disposed in the housing so that the first port of the housing receives the proximal portion. The actuator defines an internal passage and is partially disposed in the housing so that the actuator and the housing together define an external passage. The actuator can rotate relative to the housing to move the catheter between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the catheter extends from the first port within the housing, passes through the external passage and the internal passage, and extends to the second port. In the second position, the catheter extends from the first port within the housing, passes through the internal passage and passes through the second port.
[0035] In some embodiments, a device includes a catheter, a housing, and an actuator. The catheter has a proximal portion and a distal portion and defines an inner cavity extending through the proximal portion and the distal portion. The housing is configured to accommodate at least a portion of the catheter. The housing has a first port configured to receive the proximal portion of the catheter and a second port configured to connect the housing to an indwelling vascular access device (e.g., an extended indwelling PIV and / or the like). The actuator is movably connected to the housing. A portion of the actuator is disposed within the housing and in contact with a portion of the catheter. The actuator is configured to rotate an angular distance to move the distal portion of the catheter a linear distance, wherein the linear distance is greater than the angular distance. The distal portion of the catheter is disposed within the housing when in a first position, and extends through the second port when in a second position, so that the distal portion of the catheter is located distal to the indwelling vascular access device.
[0036] In some embodiments, a device includes a catheter, a housing and an actuator. The catheter has a proximal portion and a distal portion and defines an inner cavity extending through the proximal portion and the distal portion. The housing is configured to accommodate at least a portion of a mandrel mechanism and the catheter. The housing has a first port configured to receive the proximal portion of the catheter and a second port configured to couple the housing to an indwelling peripheral venous line. The actuator is coupled to the housing so that a portion of the actuator is disposed in the housing and in contact with the catheter. The actuator is configured to move relative to the housing to rotate the mandrel mechanism. The catheter is configured to move between a first position and a second position due to the rotation, in which the distal portion of the catheter is disposed in the housing, and in which the distal portion of the catheter extends through the second port so that the distal portion of the catheter is located at the far side of the second port.
[0037] In some embodiments, a fluid delivery device includes a housing having a first port and a second port, a catheter having a proximal portion fixedly coupled to the first port, and an actuator that selectively engages the catheter. In some embodiments, a method of using a fluid delivery device includes coupling the second port of the fluid delivery device to an indwelling vascular access device. The actuator rotates an angular distance about a central axis defined by the housing. In response to the rotation of the actuator, the distal portion of the catheter advances a linear distance from a first position to a second position. The distal portion of the catheter is located in the housing when the catheter is in the first position, and as the catheter moves toward the second position, the distal portion of the catheter advances linearly in a direction orthogonal to the central axis through the second port and the indwelling vascular access device. When the catheter is in the second position, the distal portion of the catheter is located distal to the indwelling vascular access device.
[0038] Although at least some devices are described herein as being used with and / or coupled to a PIV to deliver fluid to or from a patient, it should be understood that such use is presented by way of example only and not by way of limitation. For example, in other cases, the relatively compact arrangement of any device described herein can allow the device to be used with a PIV and / or other vascular access devices having an increased length relative to the length of a standard or "short" PIV (e.g., extended indwelling PIV, midline PIV, peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), etc.), as described in further detail herein.
[0039] Although described herein as being used to, for example, draw a volume of body fluid (e.g., blood) from a patient, it should be understood that the embodiments and / or devices are not limited thereto. For example, in some cases, the embodiments and / or devices can be used to draw body fluids, including but not limited to blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, bile, lymph, saliva, synovial fluid, serous fluid, pleural fluid, amniotic fluid, mucus, vitreous body, air, etc., or any combination thereof. In other cases, the embodiments and / or devices can be used to deliver one or more fluids from a fluid source to a patient. In other cases, the embodiments and / or devices can be used for any suitable procedures, etc., including catheterization of a target area in the body. That is, the embodiments and / or devices are not limited to delivering fluids to or from a patient, and can be used, for example, to provide access to a target area in a patient's body for any suitable purpose. In addition, it should be understood that the reference to "patient" need not be limited to human patients. For example, any device described herein can be used in any suitable procedure performed on an animal (e.g., by a veterinarian and / or the like).
[0040] As used in this specification, the singular forms "a", "an" and "the" include plural references unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Thus, for example, the term "member" is intended to mean a single member or a combination of members, and "material" is intended to mean one or more materials or a combination thereof.
[0041] As used herein, the terms "catheter" and "cannula" are used interchangeably to describe an element configured to define a passage for accessing a part of the body (e.g., the body of a human and / or animal). In some cases, the passage defined by the catheter and / or cannula can be used to move a body fluid or a physical object (e.g., a stent, a punctate plug, a hyaluronic acid gel, etc.) from a first location to a second location. Although the cannula can be configured to receive a trocar, a guidewire, or an introducer to deliver the cannula to a volume within the patient's body, the cannula referred to herein need not include or receive a trocar, a guidewire, or an introducer.
[0042] As used herein, the words "proximal" and "distal" refer to directions closer to and farther from a user who places the device in contact with a patient, respectively. Thus, for example, the end of the device that first contacts the patient's body would be the distal end, while the opposite end of the device (e.g., the end of the device that is manipulated by the user) would be the proximal end of the device.
[0043] As used herein, the terms "about" and "approximately" when used in conjunction with a value and / or range, generally refer to those values and / or ranges that are close to the recorded value and / or range. In some cases, the terms "about" and "approximately" may mean within ±10% of the recorded value. The terms "about" and "approximately" can be used interchangeably. For example, about 0.5 will include 0.45 and 0.55, about 10 will include 9 to 11, and about 1000 will include 900 to 1100, etc. Similarly, when used in conjunction with physical and / or geometric features, structures, characteristics, relationships, etc., the term "substantially" is intended to convey that the features, structures, characteristics, relationships, etc. defined in this manner are nominally features, structures, characteristics, relationships, etc. As an example, a first amount described as "substantially equal to" a second amount is intended to convey that although being equal may be desirable, some differences may occur. This difference may come from manufacturing tolerances, limitations, approximations, and / or other practical considerations.
[0044] The embodiments described herein and / or portions thereof may be formed or constructed of one or more biocompatible materials. In some embodiments, biocompatible materials may be selected based on one or more properties of the constituent materials, such as stiffness, toughness, durometer, bioreactivity, and the like. Examples of suitable biocompatible materials include metals, glass, ceramics, or polymers. Examples of suitable metals include medical grade stainless steel, gold, titanium, nickel, iron, platinum, tin, chromium, copper, and / or their alloys. Polymeric materials may be biodegradable or non-biodegradable. Examples of suitable biodegradable polymers include polylactide, polyglycolide, polylactide-glycolide, polyanhydrides, polyorthoesters, polyetheresters, polycaprolactones, polyesteramides, poly(butyric acid), poly(valeric acid), polyurethanes, biodegradable polyamides (nylons), and / or blends and copolymers thereof. Examples of non-biodegradable polymers include non-degradable polyamides (nylons), polyesters, polycarbonates, polyacrylates, polymers of ethylene vinyl acetate and other acyl-substituted cellulose acetates, non-degradable polyurethanes, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, poly(vinyl)imidazole), chlorosulfonate polyolefins, polyethylene oxide, and / or blends and copolymers thereof.
[0045] Figure 1 and 2Schematic diagrams of a fluid delivery device 100 in a first configuration and a second configuration, respectively, according to an embodiment. In some embodiments, the fluid delivery device 100 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be configured to couple to and / or otherwise engage an access device and / or the like, and can be manipulated to place a portion of a catheter at a desired location relative to the access device and / or a desired location within the body. For example, the device 100 can be coupled to an indwelling peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) to deliver bodily fluids to and / or from a portion of a patient (e.g., to withdraw a volume of blood or to infuse a drug or substance), as described in further detail herein.
[0046] Device 100 may be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. Figure 1 As shown, the device 100 includes at least a housing 110, a catheter 130 (or cannula), and an actuator 150. The housing 110 can be of any suitable construction. For example, in some embodiments, the housing 110 can be an elongated member having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape (e.g., cylindrical). In other embodiments, the housing 110 can have a square, rectangular, and / or any other polygonal cross-sectional shape. In other embodiments, the housing 110 can be a cube or similar shape with rounded or non-rounded edges, corners, and the like. In yet other embodiments, the housing 110 can have any suitable irregular shape, cross-section, and the like. In some embodiments, the shape of the housing 110 and / or one or more features and / or surface finish of at least the outer surface of the housing 110 can be arranged to increase the ergonomics of the device 100, which in some cases can allow the user to manipulate the device 100 with one hand (i.e., one-handed use). As described in further detail herein, the device 100 is arranged so that the housing 110 has a relatively compact length or similar size, but does not limit and / or reduce the length of the catheter 130. In some embodiments, the housing 110 can have a length and / or size that is less than, for example, the length of a conduit 130 that is at least partially disposed therein.
[0047] The housing 110 has a first port 111 and a second port 112. The first port 111 (e.g., the proximal port) is configured to receive a proximal portion 131 of a catheter 130, and the second port (e.g., the distal port) is configured to movably receive a distal portion 132 of the catheter 130. The ports 111 and 112 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the first port 111 can be a clamp, a grommet, an O-ring, a compression member, a LuerLok, or a plurality of other types of devices. TMand / or any other suitable coupler. In some embodiments, the first port 111 can receive a proximal portion 131 of the catheter 130 and can allow a portion of the catheter 130 to be disposed within the housing 110 while maintaining a fixed portion of the catheter 130 (e.g., the proximal portion 131) outside the housing 110, as described in further detail herein. In some embodiments, the second port 112 can be a locking mechanism and / or coupler configured to couple the housing 110 to a PIV (e.g., an indwelling or placed PIV), and / or any suitable adapter to couple to a PIV (e.g., an IV extension kit or the like). For example, in some embodiments, the second port 112 can be a LuerLok® or a LuerLok® connector. TM , "Clip-Lock-Snap" connectors, and / or the like configured to be physically and fluidically coupled to, for example, a PIV. In addition, the second port 112 is configured to movably receive the distal portion 132 of the catheter 130 to allow the distal portion 132 of the catheter 130 to be advanced through the second port 112 and allow PIV ( Figure 1 and Figure 2 ) is at least partially disposed within a vein of the patient (e.g., a vein in which a PIV is placed), as described in further detail herein.
[0048] Although the second port 112 is described as being configured to be coupled to a PIV, it should be understood that the second port 112 may also be configured to be coupled to any suitable connector, adapter, access device, and / or any other suitable device. In addition, as described above, the PIV may be a standard or short PIV, an extended indwelling PIV, a midline PIV, a PICC line, and / or the like.
[0049] The catheter 130 includes a proximal portion 131 and a distal portion 132 and defines a lumen (not shown) extending through the proximal portion 131 and the distal portion 132. Although described as defining a lumen, in some embodiments, the catheter 130 may include and / or define multiple lumens, channels, flow paths, etc. Although Figure 1 and Figure 2 1, but the proximal portion 131 of the catheter 130 may include and / or be coupled to a coupler and / or lock configured to couple the catheter 130 (e.g., physically and fluidically) to any suitable device and / or reservoir (e.g., a syringe, a fluid reservoir, a sample reservoir, an evacuated container, a fluid source, etc.). The distal portion 132 of the catheter 130 is configured to be inserted into a portion of a patient's body, as described in further detail herein.
[0050] At least a portion of the conduit 130 is movably disposed within the housing 110. In some embodiments, the conduit 130 can be moved between a first position and a second position (e.g., by movement of the actuator 150) to convert the device 100 between the first configuration and the second configuration, respectively. More specifically, when the conduit 130 is in the first position ( Figure 1 ), the distal end portion 132 of the catheter 130 is disposed within the housing 110, and when the catheter 130 is in the second position ( Figure 2 ), at least a portion of catheter 130 (e.g., distal portion 132) extends through second port 112 and the PIV (not shown) to place the distal end of catheter 130 in a distal position relative to the PIV, as described in further detail herein.
[0051] The catheter 130 can be formed of any suitable material or material combination, such as those materials or material combinations described above. In some embodiments, the catheter 130 can be formed of a material or material combination and / or can have a size, shape, diameter, thickness, etc. to produce any suitable stiffness, flexibility, hardness, and / or durometer. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the catheter 130 can be formed of a braided material or the like, which can change, modify, and / or alter the flexibility of the catheter 130 in response to bending forces or the like. In some embodiments, forming the catheter 130 from a braided material or the like can reduce the possibility of kinking, squeezing, bending, and / or other deformations in an undesirable manner. In addition, at least a portion of the catheter 130 formed from a braided material can cause compression and / or deformation in response to a compressive force (e.g., axial force, etc.) applied in the direction of the longitudinal centerline defined by the catheter 130. In this way, the catheter 130 can absorb a portion of the force associated with, for example, hitting an obstacle, etc.
[0052] The catheter 130 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. In some embodiments, the catheter 130 can have a length, diameter, and / or configuration that is based at least in part on one or more features and / or aspects of the access device to which the device 100 is configured to be connected. For example, in some embodiments, at least a portion of the catheter 130 can have an inner diameter that is substantially similar to or slightly smaller than an inner diameter defined by a portion of the second port 112 and / or an inner diameter defined by a portion of the access device to which the second port 112 is connected (e.g., PIV, extended indwelling PIV, midline PIV, PICC line, etc.). In this way, the inner surface of the second port 112 and / or the PIV can guide the catheter 130 as it moves through, as described in further detail herein. In some embodiments, such an arrangement can limit and / or can substantially prevent a portion of the catheter 130 from bending, deforming, and / or kinking during use.
[0053] In some embodiments, catheter 130 can have a length sufficient to place the distal surface of catheter 130 within and / or in a desired position relative to the access device when catheter 130 is in the second position. In some embodiments, the length of catheter 130 can be sufficient to define a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance between the distal surface of catheter 130 and the distal surface of the PIV when catheter 130 is in the second position. In some cases, placing the distal surface of catheter 130 at a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance from the distal surface of the PIV can, for example, place the distal surface of catheter 130 in a desired position within a vein, as described in further detail herein. In some embodiments, catheter 130 can include markings or indications that can be used to determine the distance between the distal surface of catheter 130 and the distal surface of the PIV when catheter 130 is in the second position. In addition, catheter 130 can have a length sufficient to place the distal surface of catheter 130 in a desired position relative to the distal surface of an access device, where the access device has a relatively long length when fully extended (e.g., in the second position), so that when device 100 is connected to an access device having a relatively shorter length, the distal surface of catheter 130 can be placed in a desired position relative to the distal surface of the shorter access device without having to be fully extended.
[0054] In some embodiments, for example, a predetermined, desired, and / or threshold (e.g., minimum) distance between a distal surface of catheter 130 and a distal surface of an access device (e.g., PIV) can be between about 0.0 millimeters (mm) and about 50.0 millimeters (about 0.0 inches (in) to about 2 inches). In other embodiments, the predetermined, desired, and / or threshold distance can be between about 15.0 millimeters and about 30.0 millimeters (about 0.59 inches to about 1.18 inches). In yet other embodiments, the distal portion 132 of catheter 130 can be advanced, for example, through a seat of an access device, while remaining proximal to the distal surface of the access device (e.g., the distal portion 132 of catheter 130 does not extend through the access device). For example, in some embodiments, the predetermined and / or desired distance between the distal surface of the catheter 130 and the distal surface of the access device can be when the distal surface of the catheter 130 is between about 80.0 mm and about 0.0 mm (about 3.15 inches to about 0.0 inches) proximal to the distal surface of the access device (e.g., -80.0 mm to about 0.0 mm).
[0055] In some embodiments, the length of the catheter 130 can be based at least in part on the desired and / or intended use. For example, in some embodiments, the device 100 can be configured for use in interventional cardiology, where the catheter 130 can have a length of, for example, 320.0 centimeters (cm) (approximately 12.60 inches) or greater. In other embodiments, the device 100 can be configured for fluid delivery via PIV (e.g., standard or short PIV, extended indwelling PIV, midline PIV, etc.) and can have a length between about 1.77 cm and about 25.4 cm (about 0.5 inches (in) to about 10.0 inches).
[0056] In some embodiments, the length of the conduit 130 can be greater than the length of the housing 110. In addition, the length of the portion of the conduit 130 disposed in the housing 110 can be greater than the length of the housing 110 and / or at least greater than the length of a straight line extending between the first port 111 and the second port 112 of the housing 110. For example, in some embodiments, the portion of the conduit 130 disposed in the housing 110 can be formed and / or can be arranged in a U-shaped configuration that forms a U-shaped bend or a 180° turn in the housing. In other embodiments, the portion of the conduit 130 disposed in the housing can be formed and / or can be arranged in any suitable manner and / or have any suitable turn angle from no turn (0°) to a full turn (360°) or more than one full turn (e.g., any number of loops or any suitable portion thereof can be formed). In other embodiments, the portion of the conduit 130 disposed in the housing 110 can be arranged in a spiral configuration, a coil configuration, and / or any other circuitous, tortuous, or substantially nonlinear configuration.
[0057] Thus, for a given length of housing 110, the arrangement of catheter 130 disposed in housing 110 can result in an increased “reach” of catheter 130. In some embodiments, such an arrangement can allow device 100 to be used with access devices and / or the like having relatively long lengths (e.g., extended indwelling PIV, midline PIV, PICC lines, and / or the like). In other embodiments, the arrangement of catheter 130 disposed in housing 110 can allow for a reduction in the length of housing 110 without similarly or correspondingly reducing the length or reach of catheter 130. Additionally, the arrangement of catheter 130 within housing 110 can result in a shorter unsupported portion of catheter 130 compared to an unsupported portion of a catheter having a straight or linear configuration, which can reduce the likelihood of undesirable bowing, kinking, bending, deflection, and / or deformation of catheter 130 as it advances toward the second position.
[0058] The actuator 150 of the device 100 can be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. The actuator 150 is coupled to the housing 110 and the conduit 130. More particularly, the actuator 150 can be a rotary actuator or mechanism including a first portion disposed outside the housing 110 and a second portion disposed within the housing 110. By rotating the rotary actuator 150, as Figure 1 and 2 As indicated by arrow AA in , a user can engage the first portion to move the actuator 150 relative to the housing 110. In some embodiments, the housing 110 can limit the range of motion of the actuator 150. For example, in some embodiments, the housing can include structures, features, components, and / or the like that can selectively engage a portion of the actuator 150 to limit, constrain, guide, and / or otherwise direct the amount of movement or direction of movement of a portion of the actuator 150. That is, the actuator 150 can be rotated within a desired range of motion and / or a desired angular displacement based at least in part on the size and / or arrangement of a portion of the actuator 150 and the size and / or arrangement of a portion of the actuator housing 110. As described in further detail herein, the actuator 150 can be actuated (e.g., rotated) to move the catheter 130 in a first position ( Figure 1 ) and the second position ( Figure 2 ) to advance between.
[0059] Despite Figure 1 and 2 130. In some embodiments, the second portion of the actuator 150 may be and / or may include a relatively rigid member, mechanism, sleeve, and / or the like that defines a lumen or passage configured to movably receive a portion of the catheter 130. In some embodiments, the lumen or passage of the second portion may have a U-shaped configuration, a curved configuration, a spiral configuration, a coil configuration, a circuitous or tortuous configuration, and / or the like. In some embodiments, the second portion and / or the lumen or passage defined by the second portion may have any suitable radius of curvature and any suitable surface that is configured to engage, guide, and / or control at least a portion of the catheter 130.
[0060] In other embodiments, the second portion of the actuator 150 can be a wheel, a disk, a gear, a sprocket, and / or the like that is configured to contact a portion of the conduit 130 and / or contact a member coupled to the conduit 130. In such embodiments, the second portion and the conduit 130 are arranged so that an outer surface of the conduit 130 can contact the second portion of the actuator 150, such that the friction force generated by the contact at least partially resists the movement of the conduit 130 on the second portion of the actuator 150. In this manner, when the actuator 150 is rotated relative to the housing 110, the second portion of the actuator 150 advances the conduit 130 in a direction that is tangential (or substantially tangential) to the contact point or contact area between the second portion of the actuator 150 and the conduit 130.
[0061] The arrangement of the device 100 can be such that rotational movement of the actuator 150 about a given axis in the housing 110 advances the portion of the catheter 130 engaged with the actuator 150 (e.g., the second portion of the actuator 150), which in turn moves the catheter 130 between the first position and the second position. As described above, the proximal portion 131 of the catheter 130 is coupled to the first port 111 and / or otherwise extends through the first port, while the distal portion 132 of the catheter 130 is configured to move relative to the housing 110 (e.g., through the second port 112). Thus, as Figure 2 As shown, rotating the actuator 150 in a counterclockwise direction (e.g., direction AA) advances a portion of the catheter 130 about the axis of the actuator 150 (e.g., about a second portion of the actuator 150, not shown). In response, the distal end portion 132 of the catheter 130 is moved from the first position ( Figure 1 ) moves to the second position ( Figure 2 ).
[0062] In some embodiments, the arrangement of the catheter 130 can be such that the proximal portion 131 of the catheter 130 is fixedly coupled to the first port 111 and / or otherwise maintained in a fixed position relative to the first port 111. Thus, rotating the actuator 150 within a rotational and / or angular displacement can cause the portion of the catheter 130 disposed within the housing 110 to advance, coil (or deploy), wind (or unwind), and / or otherwise move. In other words, when the catheter 130 moves between the first position and the second position, the proximal portion 131 can be maintained in a substantially fixed position relative to the housing 110. In other embodiments, the proximal portion of the catheter 130 can be movably coupled to the first port 111 and / or movably received by the first port 111. Thus, rotating the actuator within a rotational and / or angular displacement can cause all or substantially all of the catheter 130 to advance, coil (or deploy), wind (or unwind), and / or otherwise move relative to the housing 110 in response to actuation of the actuator 150. In this manner, regardless of whether the proximal portion 131 of the catheter 130 is fixedly or movably coupled to the first port 111 of the housing 110, the arrangement of the device 100 can be such that the housing 110 has a relatively compact, limited and / or reduced length while the catheter 130 has a length sufficient to extend a desired distance (e.g., to at least partially extend to or through a standard or short PIV, an extended indwelling PIV, a midline PIV, a PICC line, and / or any other suitable access device).
[0063] Figure 3 and 4 FIG. 2 shows a fluid delivery device 200 according to another embodiment. The fluid delivery device 200 (also referred to herein as a “device”) includes a housing 210, a conduit 230, and an actuator 250. Figure 3 and Figure 4 As shown, housing 210 is an elongated member, tube, housing, guide, etc. In some embodiments, housing 210 can be substantially straight and / or linear, with a relatively small internal cross-sectional shape. As described above with reference to housing 110, Figure 3 and Figure 4 The housing 210 shown includes a first port 211 (e.g., a proximal port) and a second port 212 (e.g., a distal port). Ports 211 and 212 can be any suitable coupling mechanisms, locking members, ports, openings, caps, etc., and can be of the same construction or different constructions. That is, the first port 211 can be similar to or different from the second port 212. In addition, the second port 212 is configured to be coupled to an access device such as a PIV, an extended indwelling PIV, a midline PIV, a PICC line, and / or the like.
[0064] The catheter 230 can be any suitable lumen-defining device. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 230 can be the same as described above with reference to Figure 1 and 2 The described catheter 130 is similar or substantially the same. Therefore, various parts and / or aspects of the catheter 230 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0065] like Figure 3 and 4 As shown, the catheter 230 is configured to be at least partially and / or temporarily disposed in the housing 210. More specifically, the catheter 230 includes a proximal portion 231 and a distal portion 232, wherein the proximal portion is coupled to the first port 211, received by the first port and / or otherwise positioned at or near the first port, and the distal portion 232 is coupled to the second port 212, received by the second port and / or otherwise positioned at or near the second port. Figure 3 and 4 In the illustrated embodiment, the proximal portion 231 of the catheter 230 is movably coupled to and / or otherwise received by the first port 211. For example, the first port 211 can be configured to at least allow the proximal portion 231 of the catheter 230 to move through the first port. In some embodiments, the proximal portion 231 of the catheter 230 can be coupled to an auxiliary catheter or the like that is configured to place the catheter 230 in fluid communication with a fluid source, a fluid reservoir, and / or any other suitable device. In other embodiments, the proximal portion 231 of the catheter 231 can at least partially movably extend through the first port 211. As shown in FIG. Figure 3 and 4 As shown, the distal portion 232 of the catheter 230 is configured to be movably coupled to and / or otherwise received by the second port 212 of the housing 210. Thus, at least the portion of the catheter 230 between the proximal portion 231 and the distal portion 232 is disposed within the housing 210.
[0066] The actuator 250 can be any suitable member, mechanism, device, etc. For example, in some embodiments, the actuator 250 can be similar in at least form and / or function to the above-referenced Figure 1 and 2 The actuator 150 described above is substantially similar. Figure 3 and 4As shown, the actuator 250 includes a first portion 251 and a second portion 252. The actuator 250 can be coupled to the housing 210 at or near the second port 212 of the housing 210 (e.g., at or near the distal portion of the housing 210). In other embodiments, the actuator 250 can be coupled to the housing 210 at any suitable position along the length of the housing 210. The actuator 250 can be coupled to the housing 210 in any suitable manner that allows the actuator 250 to rotate relative to the housing 210. In addition, the actuator 250 can be coupled to the housing 210 such that the second portion 252 is at least partially disposed within the housing 210 and contacts and / or otherwise allows engagement with the catheter 230.
[0067] As described above with reference to actuator 150, actuator 250 is configured such that rotational movement of actuator 250 causes second portion 252 of actuator 250 to engage conduit 230, thereby causing conduit 230 to move in a linear direction in a first position (e.g., Figure 3 a proximal position as shown) and a second position (e.g., Figure 4 More specifically, in use, the device 200 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which at least the distal end portion of the catheter 230 is disposed within the housing 210 ( Figure 3 ), the user can manipulate the device 230 by engaging the first portion 251 of the actuator 250 to place the device 200 in the second configuration and / or state. For example, the user can apply a force on the first portion 251 of the actuator 250 to rotate the actuator in a clockwise direction, for example, as shown in FIG. Figure 4 Thus, the second portion 252 of the actuator 250 rotates relative to the housing 210 and engages the catheter 230 to move the catheter 230 in the distal direction, as shown in FIG. Figure 4 Thus, when the second port 212 of the housing 210 is connected to an access device or the like ( Figure 3 and 4 ), catheter 230 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, as described above with reference to device 100.
[0068] In some embodiments, the ratio of the angular displacement of the actuator 250 relative to the linear displacement of the catheter 230 can be adjusted and / or selected so that the catheter 230 moves with a desired set of characteristics. For example, the device 200 can be preset so that a known number of turns or portions of a turn (e.g., 1 / 2 turn, 1 turn, 10 turns, etc.) can result in a known amount of advancement of the distal portion 232 of the catheter 230. In some embodiments, the device 200 can be configured to have a mechanical advantage, gearing, etc., which can cause a "length multiplication" and / or "displacement multiplication" effect so that a relatively small amount of rotation of the actuator 250 causes a relatively large amount of translation of the distal portion 232 of the catheter 230. When accessing a vein or the like via an access device coupled to the second port 212, the linear displacement of at least the distal portion 232 of the catheter 230 can be sufficient to place the distal surface of the catheter 230 in a desired position relative to the distal surface of the access device, regardless of the type and / or length of the access device. For example, in some cases, it may be desirable to position the distal surface of catheter 230 distal to the distal surface of an access device. In such cases, the arrangement of device 200 can be such that housing 210 has a compact, limited and / or reduced length, while catheter 230 has a length sufficient to extend beyond the distal end of an access device (e.g., PIV or the like).
[0069] In some embodiments, the arrangement of the actuator 250 and the catheter 230 can also be adjusted and / or selected based at least in part on the amount of force applied to the actuator 250 to rotate the actuator 250 and / or the amount of force associated with advancing the catheter 230. Advancing the catheter 230. For example, in some embodiments, the arrangement of the actuator 250 and the catheter 230 can be such that the distal portion 232 of the catheter 230 is advanced in response to a relatively small force applied to the actuator 250 (e.g., by mechanical advantage, gearing, etc.). In some embodiments, the amount of friction between the second portion 252 of the actuator 250 and the catheter 230 can be increased or decreased to achieve a desired amount of sliding between the second portion 252 and the catheter 230 in response to the catheter hitting an obstacle or the like. In some cases, reducing the amount of force associated with the advancement of the catheter 230 can reduce and / or limit damage to the catheter 230 and / or other structures (e.g., a portion of a vein wall or access device) that may otherwise cause the distal surface of the catheter 230 to hit an obstacle or the like.
[0070] Figure 5 and 6A fluid delivery device 300 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 300 (also referred to herein as "device") can be substantially similar to devices 100 and / or 200 in at least some aspects of its structure and / or function. Device 300 includes a housing 310 and a catheter 330. Housing 310 includes a first port 311 configured to receive a proximal portion 331 of catheter 330 and a second port 312 configured to receive a distal portion 332 of catheter 330, as described above with reference to devices 100 and / or 200. As described above with reference to devices 100 and / or 200. Figure 5 and 6 As shown, the housing 310 can be an elongated member, a tube, an introducer, a sheath, and / or the like, which includes and / or forms a ring or a complete 360° turn between the first port 311 and the second port 312. For example, in some embodiments, the housing 310 can be a relatively rigid member (e.g., formed of relatively hard plastic and / or similar materials) that is formed or molded into an annular shape or configuration. In other embodiments, the housing 310 can be formed of a relatively flexible material or similar material that can allow the housing 310 to be bent, molded, curved, and / or otherwise reconfigured. In such embodiments, the user can manipulate the device 300 to arrange the housing 310 into any suitable shape and / or configuration. In some embodiments, the housing 310 can be formed and / or arranged into a shape or configuration that reduces, for example, the overall length and / or size of the device 300.
[0071] As described above with reference to devices 100 and / or 200, the catheter 330 of the device 300 is configured to be at least partially disposed in the housing 300 and can be converted and / or moved between at least a first position (e.g., a proximal position) and a second position (e.g., a distal position). As shown, the catheter 330 includes a proximal portion 331 and a distal portion 332, the proximal portion being coupled to the first port 311, received by the first port, and / or otherwise positioned at or near the first port, and the distal portion being coupled to the second port 312, received by the second port, and / or otherwise positioned at or near the second port. Figure 5 and 6In the illustrated embodiment, the proximal portion 331 of the catheter 330 is movably coupled to the first port 311 and / or otherwise received by the first port, as described above with reference to the catheter 330. The distal portion 332 of the catheter 330 is configured to be movably coupled to the second port 312 of the housing 310 and / or otherwise received by the second port. In this way, at least a portion of the catheter 330 between the proximal portion 331 and the distal portion 332 is arranged within the housing 310. In some embodiments, the loop or ring configuration of the housing 310 can make the length of the catheter 330 greater than the length or distance between the first port 311 and the second port 312. Therefore, the catheter 330 can have any desired length or "range" without significantly increasing the overall length of the device 300. Although the housing 310 is shown as forming a single ring, circle, coil, turn, etc., it should be understood that the housing can include any number of rings or turns, thereby allowing any suitable catheter length.
[0072] exist Figure 5 and 6 In the illustrated embodiment, a user can engage, for example, the proximal portion 331 of the catheter 330 to move or transition the catheter 330 between a first position and a second position. For example, the device 300 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which the catheter 330 is in a first position ( Figure 5 ), the user can apply force on the proximal portion 331 of the catheter 330 to move the catheter 330 in the distal direction toward the second position, such as Figure 6 Similarly, a user can engage a portion of the catheter 330 to move the catheter 330 from the second position to or toward the first position (eg, after use).
[0073] Although the device 300 is shown and described above as being actuated in response to a force applied to a portion of the catheter 330, in other embodiments, a device having a similar shape and / or configuration may include any suitable actuator configured to move and / or translate the catheter 330. For example, in some embodiments, the device may include a slider or the like that may slide and / or otherwise move to move the catheter between a first position and a second position. In other embodiments, the device may include the same actuators as described above with reference to FIG. Figure 3 and Figure 4 An actuator similar to actuator 250 is described.
[0074] For example, Figure 7 and 8A fluid delivery device 400 is shown in a first configuration and a second configuration, respectively, according to another embodiment. Fluid delivery device 400 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 400 can be similar to and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, and / or 300 described above. For example, as described in further detail herein, device 400 can be a combination of certain portions and / or aspects of devices 200 and 300. Therefore, the portions of device 400 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0075] Device 400 includes at least a housing 410, a catheter 430, and an actuator 450. Housing 410 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, housing 410 can be an elongated member having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. Housing 410 includes a first port 411 configured to receive a proximal portion 431 of catheter 430 and a second port 412 configured to receive a distal portion 432 of catheter 430, as described above with reference to devices 100, 200, and / or 300. In some embodiments, housing 410 can be similar and / or substantially the same as housing 310 described above. For example, as described above with reference to devices 100, 200, and / or 300. Figure 7 and 8 As shown, the housing 410 can be formed, molded, and / or otherwise arranged into a curved, curved, annular, coiled, and / or spiral shape or configuration. Therefore, the housing 410 and / or aspects thereof will not be described in further detail herein.
[0076] The conduit 430 of the device 400 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the conduit 430 can be substantially similar to any of the conduits 130, 230, and / or 330 described above. For example, as described above with reference to the conduit 130, the conduit 430 can be formed of a material or combination of materials and can have a size, shape, diameter, thickness, and / or durometer that is configured to allow at least a portion of the conduit 430 to move from a first position to a second position (e.g., relative to the housing 410) without undesirable bending, deformation, kinking, etc. In addition, in some embodiments, the size, shape, diameter, length, and / or configuration of the conduit 430 can be based at least in part on one or more characteristics and / or aspects of the access device to which the device 400 is configured to be coupled, as described in detail above with reference to the conduit 130. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the conduit 430 will not be described in further detail herein.
[0077] At least a portion of the catheter 430 is movably disposed within the housing 410. In some embodiments, the catheter 430 can be moved between a first position and a second position, in which the distal end portion 432 of the catheter 430 is disposed within the housing 410 ( Figure 7 ), in the second position, at least a portion of the catheter 430 extends through the second port 412 and at least a portion of the access device (not shown) to which the second port 412 is connected. In some embodiments, the catheter 430 can have a length sufficient to place the distal surface of the catheter 430 in a desired position relative to the distal surface of the PIV when the catheter 430 is in the second position. In some embodiments, the arrangement of the housing 410 and the catheter 430 can be substantially similar to that described above with reference to Figure 5 and Figure 6 The arrangement of the housing 310 and the conduit 330 is described.
[0078] However, device 400 may differ from device 300 by including an actuator 450 that can be used to move or transition catheter 430 between a first position and a second position. Actuator 450 may be any suitable member, mechanism, device, etc. For example, Figure 7 and 8 As shown, the actuator 450 includes a first portion 451 and a second portion 452. The actuator 450 can be coupled to the housing 410 at or near the second port 412 of the housing 410 (for example, at or near the distal portion of the housing 410). In other embodiments, the actuator 450 can be coupled to the housing 410 at any suitable location along the length of the housing 410. The actuator 450 can be coupled to the housing 410 in any suitable manner that allows the actuator 450 to rotate relative to the housing 410. In addition, the actuator 450 can be coupled to the housing 410 such that the second portion 452 is at least partially disposed within the housing 410 and contacts the catheter 430 and / or otherwise allows engagement with the catheter. In this manner, the actuator 450 can be at least similar in form and / or function to the actuators described above with reference to the embodiments of the present invention. Figure 3 and 4 The described actuator 250 is substantially similar.
[0079] In use, the device 400 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which at least the distal end portion of the catheter 430 is disposed within the housing 410 ( Figure 7 ), a user may manipulate the device 400 by engaging the first portion 451 of the actuator 450 to place the device 400 in a second configuration and / or state ( Figure 8 ). For example, a user may apply a force on the first portion 451 of the actuator 450 to rotate the actuator in a clockwise direction, for example. Figure 8Thus, the second portion 452 of the actuator 450 rotates relative to the housing 410 and engages the catheter 430 to move the catheter 430 in the distal direction, as shown in FIG. Figure 8 Thus, when the second port 412 of the housing 410 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the catheter 430 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 100 .
[0080] Fig. 9 and 10 Schematic diagrams of a fluid delivery device 500 in a first configuration and a second configuration, respectively, according to another embodiment. Fluid delivery device 500 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 500 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, and / or 400 described above. Therefore, the various portions of device 500 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0081] Device 500 includes at least a housing 510, a conduit 530, and an actuator 550. Housing 510 may be of any suitable construction. In some embodiments, the shape of housing 510 and / or one or more features and / or surface finish of at least an outer surface of housing 510 may be arranged to increase the ergonomics of device 500, which in some cases may allow a user to manipulate device 500 with one hand (i.e., one-handed use). In some embodiments, portions and / or aspects of housing 510 may be substantially similar to portions and / or aspects of housings 110, 210, 310, and / or 410. Therefore, these portions and / or aspects of housing 510 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0082] The housing 510 has a first port 511 and a second port 512. The ports 511 and 512 may be of any suitable configuration, such as those described above with reference to the first port 111 and the second port 112, respectively. Fig. 9 and 10 In the illustrated embodiment, the first port 511, for example, extends from the proximal end or proximal side of the housing 510, and the second port 512, for example, extends from the distal end or distal side (e.g., opposite the proximal end or proximal side) of the housing 510. The first port 511 is configured to fixedly or movably receive and / or couple to the proximal portion 531 of the catheter 530. The second port 512 is configured to movably receive the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530. In addition, the second port 512 can be a locking mechanism and / or a connector configured to couple the device 500 to an access device or the like, such as a PIV 505 (e.g., an indwelling PIV), as described above.
[0083] The catheter 530 of the device 500 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 530 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, and / or 430 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 530 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, as described above with reference to the catheter 130, Fig. 9 and 10 In the illustrated embodiment, the catheter 530 can be formed of any suitable material, such as those described herein. Similarly, the catheter 530 can have any suitable diameter that is configured to allow at least a portion of the catheter 530 to move through the second port 512 without undesirable bending, deformation, kinking, etc., and the catheter can have any suitable length, which can be based at least in part on one or more characteristics of the access device (e.g., PIV 505) to which the device 500 is coupled, as described above with reference to the catheter 130.
[0084] although Fig. 9 and 10 Although not shown, the catheter 530 defines a lumen extending through the proximal portion 531 and the distal portion 532. The proximal portion 531 of the catheter 530 includes and / or is coupled to a coupling 533 (e.g., a LuerLok TM or the like), the connector being configured to physically and fluidically couple the catheter 530 to any suitable device and / or reservoir (e.g., a syringe, a fluid reservoir, a sample reservoir, a vacuum container, a fluid source, etc.). The distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 is configured to be inserted into and / or through at least a portion of the indwelling PIV 505, and in some cases, into and / or through a portion of the patient's body, as described in further detail herein.
[0085] At least a portion of the catheter 530 is movably disposed within the housing 510. In some embodiments, the catheter 530 or a portion thereof can be moved (e.g., by rotational movement of the actuator 550) between a first position in which the distal end portion 532 of the catheter 530 is disposed within the housing 510 ( Fig. 9 ) and / or within the second port 512, in the second position, at least a portion of the conduit 530 extends through the second port 512 and at least a portion of the PIV 505 ( Fig.10). In some embodiments, catheter 530 can have a length sufficient to place the distal surface of catheter 530 in a distal position relative to the distal surface of PIV 505 when catheter 530 is in the second position. In other words, when catheter 530 is in the second position, the length of catheter 530 can be sufficient to define a predetermined, desired, and / or threshold distance between the distal surface of catheter 530 and the distal surface of PIV 505. In some cases, placing the distal surface of catheter 530 a predetermined, desired, and / or threshold distance from the distal surface of PIV 505 can, for example, place the distal surface of catheter 530 in a desired position within a vein, as described in detail above with reference to catheter 130.
[0086] In some embodiments, the length of the conduit 530 can be greater than the length of the housing 510 and / or the length of at least a straight line or axis defined between the first port 511 and the second port 512 of the housing 510. In some embodiments, the length of the conduit 530 can be multiple times the length of the housing 510. For example, as described above with reference to the conduit 130, the conduit 530 can be disposed in the housing 510 in a winding or coiled arrangement that includes one or more complete coils (e.g., a 360° turn) of the conduit 530 surrounding at least a portion of the actuator 550 disposed within the housing 510. Although Fig. 9 and 10 550, which may allow at least a portion of the conduit 530 to be wrapped, coiled, coiled, etc. around the portion of the actuator 550, as described in further detail herein. In some embodiments, the housing 510 may include, form, and / or define a circular portion about an axis associated with the actuator 550, within which at least a portion of the conduit 530 may be wrapped or coiled about an axis in the circular portion to form one or more 360° turns (e.g., a full turn, at least one full turn, and any suitable portion of a full turn, or multiple full turns).
[0087] The portion of the conduit 530 disposed within the housing 510 can have any suitable length. For example, in some embodiments, the length of the conduit 530 can be multiple times the length of the housing 510 without increasing the length of the housing 510, as described above with reference to Figure 1 and Figure 2As described with reference to the device 100 shown. In addition, in some embodiments, the wrapped or coiled configuration of the catheter 530 can result in the catheter 530 being in a taut or supported configuration, which can reduce the portion of the catheter 530 that is unsupported within the housing 510. For example, when the catheter 530 moves between a first position and a second position, such an arrangement can reduce the likelihood that a portion of the catheter 530 will experience undesirable kinking, bending, bowing, deflection, deformation, etc. In other words, reducing the unsupported length of the catheter 530 can result in the catheter 530 being more able to be "pushed" from the first position to the second position (e.g., able to advance without undesirable reconfiguration). In addition, in some embodiments, the housing 510 can include one or more internal structures 514, such as one or more walls, partitions, protrusions, ridges, ribs, channels, rollers, etc., which are configured to support and / or guide the catheter 530, such as Fig. 9 and 10 As shown. Fig. 9 and 10 5 , but the housing and / or any other portion of the device may include support structures that may act as fences, posts, ribs, bumpers, etc., configured to support the catheter as it is "pushed" and / or otherwise moved (e.g., advanced, retracted, etc.). In some embodiments, the support structure may be arranged in the direction of the axial force applied along the catheter. In some embodiments, the support structure may be tangential to the applied force and / or movement or rotation of the catheter (or portion thereof), for example.
[0088] The actuator 550 of the device 500 may be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Fig. 9 and 10 As shown, the actuator 550 is movably coupled to the housing 510. The actuator 550 includes a first portion 551 (e.g., an engagement portion) disposed outside the housing 510 and a second portion 552 (e.g., an axis portion) disposed within the housing 510, the second portion being configured to engage and / or otherwise contact a portion of the conduit 530. The first portion 551 of the actuator 550 may be arranged as a rotary switch, a rotary button, a tab, a knob, a dial, and the like. The second portion 552 of the actuator 550 may be, for example, a relatively rigid sleeve, a tube, a rod, a shaft, a drum, a mandrel, and / or the like. The second portion 552 may be substantially cylindrical and / or may have a circular cross-sectional shape and may have any suitable radius of curvature. In some embodiments, the second portion 552 of the actuator 550 may include and / or may define a channel, a conduit, and / or the like, within or along which a portion of the conduit 530 may be wound.
[0089] In some embodiments, the catheter 530 is wound around a second portion 552 (e.g., a shaft portion) in or along a path at least partially formed or defined by the second portion 552 of the actuator 550. In some embodiments, a portion of the catheter 530 is disposed in a conduit and / or lumen that is operably coupled to the second portion 552 of the actuator 550 such that rotational movement of the actuator 550 results in rotational movement of at least a portion of the catheter 530 that is wound or coiled around the second portion 552. Such an arrangement, in turn, results in winding (or unwinding), coiling (or unrolling), winding (or unwinding), etc. of at least a portion of the catheter 530, thereby causing the catheter 530 to be in a first position ( Fig. 9 ) and the second position ( Fig.10 ) between the second portion 552 of the actuator 550. In some embodiments, the catheter 530 can have two sections (or the device can include two catheters), which can allow the catheter 530 to be coupled to the second portion 552 of the actuator 550. For example, in some embodiments, the proximal portion 531 of the catheter 530 can be a first section or first catheter that is fixedly coupled to the first port 511 of the housing 510 and coupled to a port or the like of the actuator 550 (not shown). The middle portion of the catheter 530 (or the end portion of the second catheter) can similarly be coupled to the port of the actuator 550 and be in fluid communication with the proximal portion 531 of the catheter 530. In such embodiments, coupling the middle portion of the catheter 530 to the actuator 550 can allow a section of the catheter 530 to be wrapped or coiled around the second portion 552 of the actuator 550. In addition, the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 can extend from the second portion 552 of the actuator 550 to the second port 512, as shown in FIG. Fig. 9 shown.
[0090] In some embodiments, the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 can be at least partially disposed within and / or otherwise aligned with the second port 512 such that rotation of the actuator 550 and the portion of the catheter 530 that is wrapped and / or coiled about the second portion 552 of the actuator 550 results in substantially linear movement of the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 relative to, within, and / or through the second port 512. Additionally, the one or more internal structures 514 of the housing 510 can support and / or guide at least a portion of the catheter 530 as the catheter 530 moves and / or transitions between the first position and the second position. In some embodiments, the radius of curvature of the second portion 552 can enable the portion of the catheter 530 to move and / or transition between the first position and the second position without kinking, bending, binding, and / or otherwise undesirably deforming.
[0091] although Fig. 9 and 105. In some embodiments, the outer surface of the housing 510 and / or the surface defining at least a portion thereof may include and / or may form a set of ribs, ridges, bumps, notches, etc., which are configured to contact the surface of the actuator 550. In such embodiments, when the actuator 550 rotates relative to the housing 510, the surface of the actuator 550 may move along the ribs or the like. In this way, the movement may result in a tactile and / or audible output that may provide an indication or the like associated with the amount of relative rotation of the actuator 550 and / or the corresponding relative movement (e.g., linear movement) of the conduit 530 to the user. In some embodiments, the arrangement of the ribs or the like and the actuator 550 may serve as a friction system or the like, which may, for example, maintain the actuator 550 (and therefore the conduit 530) in a substantially fixed rotational and / or angular position in the absence of an external force (e.g., a torque or rotational force applied by a user) applied to the actuator 550.
[0092] The arrangement of the device 500 allows a portion of the actuator 550 to be advanced along and / or through a path defined within the housing 510 by moving the actuator 550 (e.g., the first portion 551 and the second portion 552 collectively) about an axis defined in the housing 510 and / or otherwise relative to the housing 510. For example, when the device 500 is in a first configuration or state ( Fig. 9 ), the actuator 550 rotates in a clockwise direction to move the catheter 530 from the first position to the second position ( Fig.10 ). In some embodiments, because the proximal portion 531 of the catheter 530 is coupled between the first port 511 and the second portion 552 of the actuator 550 and the intermediate portion of the catheter (and / or any other suitable portion) is also coupled to and at least partially coiled or wrapped around the second portion 552 of the actuator 550, rotation of the actuator 550, for example, causes a portion of the catheter 530 to advance along and / or through a path (not shown) defined within the housing 510, which in turn causes the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 to move relative to the second port 512 and / or an access device (e.g., PIV 505) coupled thereto.
[0093] As described above, the arrangement of the device 500 is such that movement of the actuator 550 by an angular amount or distance (e.g., a rotational amount) causes the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 to move by a linear amount or distance. In other words, the linear displacement (e.g., translation) of the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 is achieved by the angular displacement (e.g., rotation) of the actuator 550. In some embodiments, the ratio of the angular displacement to the linear displacement can be predetermined. For example, the device 500 can be preset so that a known number of turns or a portion of a turn (e.g., 1 / 2 turn, 1 turn, 10 turns, etc.) can result in a known amount of advancement of the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530. In some embodiments, the device 500 can be configured to have a mechanical advantage, gearing, etc., which can cause a "length multiplication" and / or "displacement multiplication" effect, so that a relatively small amount of rotation of the actuator 550 causes a relatively large amount of translation of the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530. When accessing a vein or the like through PIV505, linear displacement of at least the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 can be sufficient to place the distal surface of the catheter 530 in a desired position relative to the distal surface of the PIV505, regardless of the type and / or length of the PIV505. For example, in some cases, it may be desirable to position the distal surface of the catheter 530 distal to the distal surface of the PIV505. In this case, the arrangement of the device 500 can be such that the housing 510 has a compact, limited and / or reduced length, while the catheter 530 has a length sufficient to extend beyond the distal end of the PIV505.
[0094] Although the arrangement of the actuator 550 and the catheter 530 is described above as being used, for example, to multiply the amount of displacement of the distal portion by the given angular displacement of the actuator, in some embodiments, the arrangement can also reduce the magnitude of the force associated with advancing the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530. For example, in some embodiments, a mechanical advantage, a transmission, or the like can cause the distal portion 532 of the catheter 530 to advance in response to a reduction in the magnitude of the force applied to the actuator 550. In some cases, by reducing the magnitude of the force associated with the advancement of the catheter 530, damage to the catheter 530 and / or other structures (e.g., a vein wall or portion of the PIV 505) that might otherwise result from the distal surface of the catheter 530 striking an obstruction or the like can be reduced and / or limited.
[0095] Although the housing 510 is Fig. 9 and 105 as including one or more internal structures 514 configured to support, guide, and / or direct at least a portion of the catheter 530 as the catheter 530 moves between the first position and the second position, but in other embodiments, the device may include a housing having any suitable internal structure that can support, guide, and / or direct at least a portion of the catheter. For example, Figure 11-13 A fluid delivery device 600 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 600 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 600 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, and / or 500 described above. Therefore, portions of device 600 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0096] The device 600 includes a housing 610, a catheter 630, and an actuator 650. The housing 610 includes and / or houses at least a portion of the catheter 630, which is at least partially arranged in a winding, looping and / or coiling configuration. The housing 610 includes a first port 611 configured to fixedly receive a proximal portion 631 of the catheter 630 and a second port 612 configured to movably receive a distal portion 632 of the catheter 630. The ports 611 and 612 can be of any suitable configuration, such as any of those ports described above.
[0097] As described above with reference to housing 510, housing 610 may include one or more internal structures 614 configured to support, guide and / or direct at least a portion of conduit 630 disposed within housing 610. More particularly, in Figure 11-13 In the illustrated embodiment, the internal structure 614 can be, for example, a cylindrical wall, a drum, a protrusion (or multiple protrusions), a ridge (or multiple ridges), and / or the like. The internal structure 614 can be configured to provide a structure and / or axis around which at least a portion of the conduit 630 can be wrapped, looped, and / or coiled to support the at least a portion of the conduit 630 as the conduit 630 moves between the first position and the second position, as described in further detail herein.
[0098] The catheter 630 of the device 600 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 630 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, and / or 530 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 630 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Figure 11-13In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 630 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0099] As described above, the catheter 630 or a portion thereof may be in a first position ( Fig.11 and 12 ) and the second position ( Fig.13 ) between two positions (e.g., by rotational movement of actuator 650), in a first position, a distal portion 632 of catheter 630 is disposed within housing 610 and / or second port 612, and in a second position, at least a portion of catheter 630 extends through second port 612 and through at least a portion of an access device coupled to said second port 612. In some embodiments, catheter 630 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of catheter 630 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of an access device when catheter 630 is in the second position, as described in detail above with reference to catheter 130.
[0100] The actuator 650 of the device 600 may be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Figure 11-13 As shown, the actuator 650 includes a first portion 651 and a second portion 652. The actuator 650 can be coupled to the housing 610 at or near the second port 612 of the housing 610 (e.g., at or near the distal portion of the housing 610). In other embodiments, the actuator 650 can be coupled to the housing 610 at any suitable location along the length of the housing 610. The actuator 650 can be coupled to the housing 610 in any suitable manner that allows the actuator 650 to rotate relative to the housing 610. In addition, the actuator 650 can be coupled to the housing 610 such that the second portion 652 is at least partially disposed within the housing 610 and contacts the catheter 630 and / or otherwise allows engagement with the catheter. In this manner, the actuator 650 can be at least similar in form and / or function to the actuators described above with reference to the embodiments of the present invention. Figure 3 and Figure 4 The described actuator 250 is substantially similar.
[0101] In use, the device 600 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which the distal end portion 630 of the catheter is disposed within the housing 610 and / or the second port 612 ( Fig.11 and 12 ), the user can manipulate the device 600 by engaging the first portion 651 of the actuator 650 to place the device 600 in the second configuration and / or state ( Fig.13 For example, a user may apply a force on the first portion 651 of the actuator 650 to rotate the actuator 650 in a clockwise direction, for example. Fig.13 Thus, the second portion 652 of the actuator 650 rotates relative to the housing 610 and engages the catheter 630 to move the catheter 630 from the first position to the second position in the distal direction, as shown in FIG. Fig.13 630 is shown as indicated by arrow HH in . Thus, when the second port 612 of the housing 610 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the catheter 630 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 100. Furthermore, in some cases, the catheter 630 can be configured to deliver a volume of fluid (e.g., bodily fluids, medications, saline, etc.) through the catheter 630 between a patient and a fluid source or fluid reservoir, the fluid source or fluid reservoir being coupled to the proximal portion 631 of the catheter 630 via a coupler 633 or the like. In some cases, once the desired volume of fluid has been delivered through the catheter 630, the user can, for example, rotate the actuator 650 in a counterclockwise direction to retract and / or move the catheter 630 from the second position to the first position.
[0102] Fig.14 and 15 Schematic diagrams of a fluid delivery device 700 in a first configuration and a second configuration, respectively, according to another embodiment. Fluid delivery device 700 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 700 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and / or 600 described above. More particularly, device 700 can be similar in at least form and / or function to the devices described above with reference to Fig. 9 and 10 The described apparatus 500 is substantially similar. Therefore, parts of the apparatus 700 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0103] Device 700 includes at least a housing 710, a conduit 730, and an actuator 750. Housing 710 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, housing 710 can have a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. In some embodiments, housing 710 can be substantially similar in form and / or function to housing 510 described above. For example, housing 710 includes a first port 711 and a second port 712. Ports 711 and 712 can be of any suitable configuration, such as those described above with reference to first port 511 and second port 512, respectively. Fig.14 and 15In the illustrated embodiment, the first port 711 is configured to fixedly receive and / or couple to a proximal portion 731 of a catheter 730. The second port 712 is configured to movably receive a distal portion 732 of the catheter 730. Additionally, the second port 712 can be a locking mechanism and / or a coupler configured to couple the device 700 to an access device or the like, such as a PIV 705 (e.g., an indwelling PIV), as described above.
[0104] However, the housing 710 may differ from the housing 510 in the arrangement and / or configuration of the first port 711. For example, Fig.14 and 15 As shown, the first port 711 can be disposed in a central portion or a center portion of the housing 710. However, in other embodiments, the first port 711 can be disposed at any other suitable location along the housing 710. In addition, the housing 710 can be configured to receive at least a portion of the actuator 750, such that the housing 710 and the portion of the actuator 750 together define a channel 715 that is configured to receive at least a portion of the conduit 730, as described in further detail herein. Although the channel 715 is Fig.14 and 15 715 is shown as being substantially circular and disposed adjacent an outer wall of the housing 710, but it will be appreciated that the channel 715 may be any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration.
[0105] The catheter 730 of the device 700 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 730 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, and / or 630 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 730 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Fig.14 and 15 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 730 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0106] At least a portion of the conduit 730 is movably disposed within the housing 710. In some embodiments, the conduit 730 or a portion thereof can be in a first position ( Fig.14 ) and the second position ( Fig.15), in a first position, a distal portion 732 of the catheter 730 is disposed within the housing 710 and / or the second port 712, and in a second position, at least a portion of the catheter 730 extends through the second port 712 and through at least a portion of an access device coupled to the second port 712. In some embodiments, the catheter 730 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of the catheter 730 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of the access device when the catheter 730 is in the second position, as described in detail above. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the catheter 730 can be disposed within the housing 710 and can engage at least a portion of the actuator 750 in a manner similar to the catheter 530 described in detail above. Therefore, the arrangement of the catheter 730 will not be described in further detail herein.
[0107] The actuator 750 of the device 700 may be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Fig.14 and 15 In the illustrated embodiment, the actuator 750 is movably coupled to the housing 710 and has a mandrel structure 754 movably coupled to the housing 710. The mandrel structure 754 is at least partially disposed within the housing 710 and is configured to define the channel 715 together with a portion of the housing 710, as described above. In addition, the mandrel structure 754 is coupled to at least a portion of the catheter 730 (e.g., the proximal portion 731 of the catheter 730). Although Fig.14 and 15 750. Although not shown in the drawings, in some embodiments, the spindle structure 754 may include a portion disposed outside of the housing 710 that is configured to be engaged by a user to rotate the spindle structure 754 (and / or the actuator 750) relative to the housing 710. Thus, the actuator 750 may be similar in at least form and / or function to the spindle structure 754 described above with reference to FIG. Fig. 9 and 10 The actuator 550 described in detail is substantially similar. Therefore, the actuator 750 will not be described in further detail here.
[0108] In some embodiments, the catheter 730 is disposed within the channel 715 and is wound around the mandrel structure 754 of the actuator 750. As such, rotational movement of the actuator 750 results in rotational movement of at least a portion of the catheter 730 that is wound or coiled around the mandrel structure 754. Such an arrangement, in turn, results in winding (or unwinding), coiling (or unwinding), winding (or unwinding), etc., of at least a portion of the catheter 730, thereby moving and / or converting the catheter 730 between a first position and a second position. In some embodiments, the distal portion 732 of the catheter 730 can be at least partially disposed within and / or otherwise aligned with the second port 712, such that rotation of the actuator 750 and that portion of the catheter 730 results in substantially linear movement of the distal portion 732 of the catheter 730 relative to, within, and / or through the second port 712.
[0109] In use, the device 700 may be in a first configuration or state ( Fig.14 ), a user can engage and / or manipulate the device 700 by rotating the actuator 750 to transform the device from a first configuration or state to a second configuration or state ( Fig.15 More specifically, the user may rotate the actuator 750 (and thus the spindle structure 754) in a clockwise direction, such as Fig.15 715. The rotation of the actuator 750 moves the catheter 730 from the first position to the second position. Since the proximal portion 731 of the catheter 730 is fixedly coupled to the first port 711 and the distal portion 732 of the catheter 730 is configured to move relative to the housing 710, the rotation of the actuator 750 causes a portion of the catheter 730 to advance along and / or through the passage 715, which in turn causes the distal portion 732 of the catheter 730 to move relative to the second port 712 and / or relative to an access device coupled to the second port, such as Fig.15 Thus, the device 700 may be substantially similar to the device 500 described in detail above in at least form and / or function.
[0110] Although Fig.14 and 15 The device 700 shown in FIG. 7 is described as being actuated and / or used by rotating the actuator 750 (more particularly, by rotating the mandrel structure 754), but in other embodiments, the device may include any number of actuators and / or actuator portions that may act together to move and / or transition the catheter 730 between the first position and the second position. For example, Fig.16 and 17A fluid delivery device 800 is shown in a first configuration and a second configuration, respectively, according to another embodiment. In this embodiment, device 800 can be substantially similar in structure and / or function to device 700 except for including one or more additional actuators and / or actuator portions.
[0111] Fluid delivery device 800 (also referred to herein as "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 800 can be similar to and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and / or 700 described above. For example, device 800 can be a combination of certain portions and / or aspects of devices 200 and 700, as described in further detail herein. Therefore, portions of device 800 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0112] Device 800 includes at least a housing 810, a catheter 830, and an actuator 850. Housing 810 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, housing 810 can have a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. In some embodiments, housing 810 can be substantially similar to housing 710 described above in form and / or function. For example, housing 810 includes a first port 811 configured to be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion 831 of catheter 830 and a second port 812 configured to receive a distal portion 832 of catheter 830, as described above with reference to device 700. Therefore, housing 810 and / or aspects thereof will not be described in further detail herein.
[0113] The catheter 830 of the device 800 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 830 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, and / or 730 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 830 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Fig.16 and 17 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 630 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0114] At least a portion of the conduit 830 is movably disposed within the housing 810. In some embodiments, the conduit 830 or a portion thereof can be in a first position ( Fig.16 ) and the second position ( Fig.17), in a first position, a distal portion 832 of the catheter 830 is disposed within the housing 810 and / or the second port 812, and in a second position, at least a portion of the catheter 830 extends through the second port 812 and through at least a portion of an access device coupled to the second port 812. In some embodiments, the catheter 830 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of the catheter 830 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of the access device when the catheter 830 is in the second position, as described in detail above. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the catheter 830 can be disposed within the housing 810 and can engage at least a portion of the actuator 850 in a manner similar to the catheter 730 described in detail above. Therefore, the arrangement of the catheter 830 will not be described in further detail herein.
[0115] The actuator 850 of the device 800 may be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. Fig.16 and 17 In the illustrated embodiment, the actuator 850 is movably coupled to the housing 810 and has a mandrel structure 854 movably coupled to the housing 810. The mandrel structure 854 is at least partially disposed within the housing 810 and is configured to define the channel 815 together with a portion of the housing 810. In addition, the mandrel structure 854 is coupled to at least a portion of the catheter 830 (e.g., the proximal portion 831 of the catheter 830). In this manner, the mandrel structure 854 can be substantially similar to the mandrel structure 854 described above with reference to Fig.14 and 15 A mandrel structure 754 is described.
[0116] However, the actuator 850 may be different from the actuator 750 by including a second actuator 850A. The second actuator 850A includes a first portion 851 and a second portion 852. Fig.16 and 17 In the illustrated embodiment, the second actuator 850 can be used to move or convert the catheter 830 between a first position and a second position. The second actuator 850A can be coupled to the housing 810 at or near the second port 812 of the housing 810 (e.g., at or near the distal portion of the housing 810). The second actuator 850A can be coupled to the housing 810 in any suitable manner that allows the second actuator 850A to rotate relative to the housing 810. In addition, the second portion 852 of the second actuator 850A is at least partially disposed within the housing 810 and contacts the catheter 830 and / or otherwise allows engagement with the catheter. In this manner, the second actuator 850A can be similar in at least form and / or function to the second actuator 850A described above with reference to FIG. Figure 3 and 4 The described actuator 250 is substantially similar.
[0117] In use, the second actuator 850A can be rotated relative to the housing 810 to advance the catheter 830 from the first position to the second position. The first portion 851 of the actuator 850 is rotated in a clockwise direction (by Fig.17 Rotation of the second actuator 850A (indicated by arrow KK in FIG. 1 ) advances the portion of the catheter 850 that is engaged with the second portion 852 of the actuator 850 (e.g., in response to friction therebetween). The advancement of this portion of the catheter 850, in turn, causes a drag force on the portion of the catheter 850 that is disposed within the portion of the channel 815 defined by the core shaft structure 854 and the housing 810. In this way, the core shaft structure 854 is similarly rotated in a clockwise direction, thereby causing a gradual release of the portion of the catheter 850 that is disposed in the portion of the channel 815. Therefore, actuating and / or rotating the second actuator 850A advances at least the distal portion 832 of the catheter 830 in or along a linear path through the second port 812 of the housing 810, as shown in FIG. Fig.17 Indicated by the arrow LL in .
[0118] Although the catheter 830 is Fig.16 and 17 854 (e.g., around the exterior of the mandrel structure 854), but in other embodiments, the device may include an actuator having a mandrel structure that is configured to engage the catheter in any suitable manner. For example, Figure 18-20 Device 900 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 900 (also referred to herein as "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 900 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and / or 800 described above. Therefore, the portions of device 900 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0119] The device 900 includes at least a housing 910, a catheter 930, and an actuator 950. The housing 910 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the housing 910 can have a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. In some embodiments, the housing 910 can be substantially similar to the housings 710 and / or 810 described above in at least form and / or function. For example, the housing 910 includes a first port 911 and a second port 912, the first port being configured to couple to and / or otherwise receive a proximal portion 931 of the catheter 930, and the second port being configured to receive a distal portion 932 of the catheter 930. In some embodiments, the first port 911 can be configured to be fixedly coupled to the proximal portion 931 of the catheter 930, as described above with reference to the devices 700 and / or 800. Therefore, the housing 910 and / or aspects thereof will not be described in further detail herein.
[0120] The catheter 930 of the device 900 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 930 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, and / or 830 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 930 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Figure 18-20 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 930 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0121] At least a portion of the conduit 930 is movably disposed within the housing 910. In some embodiments, the conduit 930 or a portion thereof can be in a first position ( Fig.18 ) and the second position ( Fig. 20 ), in a first position, a distal portion 932 of the catheter 930 is disposed within the housing 910 and / or the second port 912, and in a second position, at least a portion of the catheter 930 extends through the second port 912 and through at least a portion of an access device (not shown) coupled to the second port 912. In some embodiments, the catheter 930 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of the catheter 930 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of the access device when the catheter 930 is in the second position, as described in detail above. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the catheter 930 can be disposed within the housing 910 and can engage at least a portion of the actuator 950, as described in further detail herein.
[0122] The actuator 950 of the device 900 may be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Figure 18-20 In the illustrated embodiment, the actuator 950 has a mandrel structure 954 that is movably coupled to the housing 910. The mandrel structure 954 can be coupled to, can receive, and / or can otherwise engage at least a portion of the catheter 930 (e.g., the proximal portion 931 of the catheter 930) to move the catheter 930 between a first position and a second position, as described in further detail herein. Fig.18 As shown, the mandrel structure 954 is at least partially disposed within the housing 910 such that the mandrel structure 954 and the housing 910 together define an exterior passage 915. More particularly, the mandrel structure 954 can be sized and positioned within the housing 910 such that an outer portion or exterior portion and / or exterior surface or exterior surface of the mandrel structure 954 is spaced apart from an inner portion or interior portion and / or interior surface or interior surface (e.g., inner perimeter) of the housing 910. This space, in turn, forms and / or defines the exterior passage 915, which is configured to receive at least a portion of the conduit 930, as described in further detail herein.
[0123] The mandrel structure 954 includes a set of engagement structures 957 that are configured to selectively engage the portion of the catheter 930 within the housing 930. More specifically, Figure 18-20 In the illustrated embodiment, the set of engagement structures 957 includes a pair of engagement structures 957, which can have any suitable size, shape and / or configuration. For example, the engagement structures 957 can have substantially the same size and / or shape, such as a teardrop shape, such as Figure 18-20 The engagement structures 957 can be arranged in a mirrored arrangement relative to each other such that the mandrel structure 954 defines an internal channel 958 or passageway between the pair of engagement structures 957 that is configured to movably receive a portion of the catheter 930. For example, the internal channel 958 can be a serpentine, circuitous, tortuous, and / or otherwise curved or non-linear channel or passageway that corresponds at least in part to the size and / or shape of a portion of the engagement structure 957.
[0124] The conduit 930 is disposed within the housing 910 such that a portion of the conduit 930 is disposed within at least one of the outer passage 915 and / or the inner passage 958 and is configured to advance through the at least one (eg, through the housing 910 ) in response to actuation of the actuator 950 . Fig.18 The device 900 is shown in a first configuration and / or state in which the conduit 930 is in a first position. As shown, when the conduit 930 is in the first position, a portion of the conduit 930 can extend from the first port 911, through at least a portion of the outer passage 915, through the inner passage 958, and at least partially into the second port 912. Figure 18-20As shown, rotation of the spindle structure 954 causes the engagement structure 957 (and the internal passage 958 ) to rotate relative to the first port 911 and the second port 912 of the housing 910 .
[0125] like Fig.18 As shown, when the device 900 is in a first configuration and / or state, the arrangement of the catheter 930 is such that the proximal portion 931 of the catheter 930 extends from the first port 911 and is disposed within and / or through the first portion of the outer passage 915, the middle portion of the catheter 930 is disposed within and through the inner passage 958, and the third portion of the catheter 930 is disposed within and through the second portion of the outer passage 915, so that the distal portion 932 of the catheter 930 is at least partially disposed within the second port 912 of the housing 910. In this way, when the inner passage 958 is at least partially aligned with at least one of the first port 911 and / or the second port 912, the catheter 930 is passed around one of the engagement structures 957 before entering and / or being disposed within the inner passage 958. In this position and / or orientation, the path of the catheter 930 extending between the first port 911 and the second port 912 is, for example, the longest or substantially longest path between the first port 911 and the second port 912. Thus, when the device 900 is in a first configuration and / or state (eg, when the conduit 930 is in a first position), a largest or substantially largest portion of the conduit 930 is disposed within the housing 910 .
[0126] like Fig.19 As shown, the device 900 can be converted from the first configuration and / or state by rotating the actuator 950 in a counterclockwise direction, such as Fig.19 MM in the figure. The rotation of the actuator 950 causes the rotation of the engagement structure 957, which in turn changes the portion of the outer channel 915 disposed between the first port 911 and the first end portion of the inner channel 958 and the portion of the outer channel 915 disposed between the second port 912 and the second end portion of the inner channel 958 opposite to the first end portion. More specifically, these two portions of the outer channel 915 are reduced, which in turn can operatively cause the catheter 930 to advance from its first position toward its second position through a winding, circuitous, tortuous and / or otherwise curved or non-linear path formed and / or defined by the outer channel 915 and the inner channel 958 together.
[0127] like Fig. 20As shown, the actuator 950 can be actuated (e.g., rotated) a predetermined and / or desired amount to place the device 900 in a second configuration and / or state in which the conduit 930 is located in a second position. More particularly, in some embodiments, the device 900 can be in a second configuration and / or state when the rotation of the actuator 950 causes the end portion of the internal passage 958 to be at least partially aligned with the first port 911 or the second port 912. In this position and / or orientation, the internal passage 958 can define, for example, a shortest path through the housing 910 between the first port 911 and the second port 912. As shown, the conduit 930 extends along this shortest path when the device 900 is in the second configuration and / or state, so that a minimum or substantially minimum portion of the conduit is disposed in the housing 910. As described in detail above with reference to previous embodiments, the arrangement of the device 900 can allow the conduit 930 to have a length or "reach" that can be longer than, for example, the housing 910 and / or the length of the housing 910 between the first port 911 and the second port 912. Thus, when the second port 912 of the housing 910 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the conduit 930 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, regardless of the type and / or length of the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 100.
[0128] Figure 21-23 FIG. 1 shows a fluid delivery device 1000 according to another embodiment. The fluid delivery device 1000 (also referred to herein as a “device”) may be used in conjunction with the fluid delivery device 1000 described above. Figure 18-20 The described apparatus 900 is similar and / or substantially the same. Thus, although parts and / or aspects of the apparatus 1000 are identified below, such parts and / or aspects may not be described in further detail.
[0129] As shown, the device 1000 includes a housing 1010, a catheter 1030, and an actuator 1050. The housing 1010 can be substantially similar to the housing 910 described in detail above. For example, the housing 1010 includes a first port 1011 and a second port 1012, the first port can be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion 1031 of the catheter 1030, and the second port can movably receive a distal portion 1032 of the catheter 1030. The catheter 1030 can be substantially similar to the catheter 930 described in detail above. For example, Fig.23 As shown, the catheter 1030 is at least partially disposed within the housing 1010 and is configured to be engaged by at least a portion of the actuator 1050 and / or is configured to be disposed within a space, one or more channels, one or more cavities, one or more volumes, etc. defined by the housing 1010, defined by the actuator 1050, and / or defined jointly by the housing 1010 and the actuator 1050, as further described in detail herein.
[0130] In some embodiments, the catheter 1030 can be formed of a single material and can have a predetermined length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with respect to the catheter 130. In other embodiments, the catheter 1030 can be formed of different materials and / or can have different sizes, shapes, diameters, thicknesses, etc. to produce any suitable stiffness, flexibility, hardness, and / or durometer. For example, the proximal portion 1031 of the catheter 1030 can be formed of a relatively flexible material that can deform in response to a sudden change in pressure, thereby reducing the likelihood of the catheter 1030 collapsing at a location downstream of the proximal portion. The distal portion of the catheter 1032 can be formed of a relatively rigid material or of a material having a stiffness and / or hardness that is at least greater than the stiffness and / or hardness of the proximal portion 1031, and can have a diameter that is less than the diameter of the proximal portion 1031, so as to facilitate the advancement of the catheter 1030 to and from a desired position relative to the PIV. In some embodiments, the proximal portion 1031 and the distal portion 1032 of the catheter 1030 can be separate components having different lengths, diameters, stiffness, flexibility, materials, and / or configurations that can be mechanically and fluidically connected using an adapter located within the first port 1011, such as Figure 21-23 shown.
[0131] The actuator 1050 can be substantially similar to the actuator 950 described in detail above. For example, the actuator 1050 includes a mandrel structure 1054 having a pair of engagement structures 1057 that are arranged in a mirror-image orientation relative to each other so that an internal channel 1058 or path is defined between them. In some embodiments, the actuator 1050 can include a tube, an introducer, a sheath, and / or the like disposed within the internal channel 1058 and configured to support and guide the catheter 1030, thereby limiting and / or substantially preventing a portion of the catheter 1030 from undesirable deformation and / or deflection when the device is converted between a first configuration to a second configuration. In some embodiments, one or more surfaces of the actuator 1050 and / or the mandrel structure 1054 can selectively contact and / or otherwise support the catheter 1030 as a portion of the catheter moves through the housing.
[0132] As described above with reference to device 900, device 1000 is configured to move from a first configuration and / or state ( Fig.21 When the device 1000 is in the first configuration and / or state, the conduit 1030 is configured to be located in a first position such that the largest or substantially largest portion or length of the conduit 1030 is disposed within the housing 1010 and between the first port 1011 and the second port 1012.
[0133] In some cases, a user may rotate actuator 1050 to place device 1000 in a second configuration and / or state ( Fig. 22 ). When the device 1000 is in the second configuration and / or state, the catheter 1030 is configured to be located in a second position such that a minimum or substantially minimum portion or length of the catheter 1030 is disposed within the housing 1010 and between the first port 1011 and the second port 1012. In addition, as described in detail above, when the catheter 1030 is located in the second position, the distal portion 1032 of the catheter 1030 can be placed in a desired position (e.g., a distal position) relative to the second port 1012 and / or relative to an access device coupled to the second port 1012.
[0134] Although engagement structures 957 and / or 1057 are shown and described above as having substantially the same size, shape, and / or configuration and arranged in a mirror-image orientation relative to each other, in other embodiments, the mandrel structure may include a set of engagement structures, each of which may have any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, Fig.24 and 25 A fluid delivery device 1100 is shown according to another embodiment. Fluid delivery device 1100 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1100 can be similar to and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and / or 1000 (or any suitable combination thereof) described above. Therefore, portions of device 1100 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0135] The device 1100 includes at least a housing 1110, a catheter 1130, and an actuator 1150. The housing 1110 can be of any suitable configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the housing 1110 can have a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. In some embodiments, the housing 1110 can be substantially similar to the housings 910 and / or 1010 described above in at least form and / or function. For example, the housing 1110 includes a first port 1111 and a second port 1112, the first port being configured to couple to and / or otherwise receive a proximal portion 1131 of the catheter 1130, and the second port being configured to receive a distal portion 1132 of the catheter 1130. In some embodiments, the first port 1111 can be configured to be fixedly coupled to the proximal portion 1131 of the catheter 1130, as described above with reference to the device 900. Therefore, the housing 1110 and / or aspects thereof will not be described in further detail herein.
[0136] The catheter 1130 of the device 1100 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 1130 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, and / or 1030 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 1130 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Fig.24 and 25 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 1130 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0137] At least a portion of the conduit 1130 is movably disposed within the housing 1110. In some embodiments, the conduit 1130 or a portion thereof can be in a first position ( Fig.24 ) and the second position ( Fig.25 ), in a first position, distal portion 1132 of catheter 1130 is disposed within housing 1110 and / or second port 1112, and in a second position, at least a portion of catheter 1130 extends through second port 1112 and through at least a portion of an access device (not shown) coupled to second port 1112. In some embodiments, catheter 1130 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of catheter 1130 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of an access device when catheter 1130 is in the second position, as described in detail above.
[0138] The actuator 1150 of the device 1100 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. In some embodiments, the actuator 1150 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to the actuator 950 described in detail above. Fig.24 and 25In the illustrated embodiment, the actuator 1150 has a mandrel structure 1154 that is movably coupled to the housing 1110. The mandrel structure 1154 includes a first engagement structure 1157A and a second engagement structure 1157B that are configured to selectively engage a portion of the conduit 1130 that is located within the housing 1110. As described above with reference to the actuator 950, the mandrel structure 1154 can be at least partially disposed within the housing 1110 such that the mandrel structure 1154 and the housing 1110 together define an exterior passage 1115. The mandrel structure 1154 can be configured to guide, direct, and / or engage at least a portion of the conduit 1130 disposed within the housing 1110, as described in further detail herein. In addition, the conduit 1130 can be wound, wrapped, and / or wrapped around the mandrel structure 1154 in a manner substantially similar to the manner in which the conduit 930 is wound, wrapped, and / or wrapped around the mandrel structure 954. Thus, the actuator 1150 rotates in a counterclockwise direction (e.g., Fig.24 OO in the figure) is operable to move the catheter 1130 from a first position ( Fig.24 ) moves to the second position ( Fig.25 ).
[0139] Although the engagement structures 957 and 1057 are described above as having substantially the same shape, size and / or configuration, Fig.24 and 25 In the illustrated embodiment, the engagement structures 1157A and 1157B have different shapes, sizes and / or configurations. For example, the arrangement of the mandrel structure 1154 is such that the first engagement structure 1157A is larger than the second engagement structure 1157B. The engagement structures 1157 can be arranged in a mirrored arrangement relative to each other, such that the mandrel structure 1154 defines an internal channel 1158 or passageway between the engagement structures 1157A and 1157B, which is configured to movably receive a portion of the conduit 1130.
[0140] In some embodiments, the size and / or shape of the engagement structures 1157A and 1157B, and therefore the location of the internal passage 1158, can be based at least in part on the location or position of at least one of the first port 1111 or the second port 1112 of the housing 1110. For example, Fig.24 and 25As shown, the size of at least the second engagement portion 1158 can be based at least in part on and / or can substantially correspond to the distance between the first port 1111 and the second port 1112. In some embodiments, the size and / or shape of the engagement structures 1157A and / or 1157B can be such that each end portion of the internal channel 1158 is substantially aligned with at least one of the first port 1111 or the second port 1112 when the device 1100 is in each of the first configuration and / or state and the second configuration and / or state in each channel, respectively. Fig.24 and 25 As shown. In some embodiments, by increasing or decreasing the size or shape of the engagement structures 1157A and 1157B, the length or "reach" of the conduit 1130 can be increased or decreased, respectively, for example. For example, a path defined at least in part by the internal passage 1158 between the first port 1111 and the second port 1112 of the housing 1110 can be shorter than a path defined at least in part by the internal passage 958 between the first port 911 and the second port 912. Thus, a means of adjusting the length and / or reach of the conduit can increase and / or decrease the size and / or shape of the engagement structures.
[0141] Fig.26 A fluid delivery device 1200 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 1200 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1200 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of the above-described devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, and / or 1100 (or any suitable combination thereof). More particularly, device 1200 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100 described in detail above. Therefore, the various portions of device 1200 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0142] However, the difference between device 1200 and device 900 may be that device 1200 is, for example, two devices coupled together, and a single conduit passes through the two devices. As shown, device 1200 includes at least housing 1210, conduit 1230, first actuator 1250A and second actuator 1250B. Housing 1210 may be any suitable configuration. In some embodiments, housing 1210 and / or its parts may be substantially similar to above-mentioned housings 910, 1010 and / or 1110 in at least form and / or function. Housing 1210 may be, for example, two housings coupled together, from housing 910, 1010 and / or 1110. For example, housing 1210 may include a first portion configured to receive first actuator 1250A and a second portion configured to receive second actuator 1250B. The first portion of the housing 1210 includes and / or is coupled to a first port 1211 that can be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion 1231 of the catheter 1230. The second portion of the housing 1210 includes and / or is coupled to a second port 1212 that movably receives a distal portion 1232 of the catheter 1230. Thus, a portion of the catheter 1230 is configured to be disposed within the first and second portions of the housing 1210 (e.g., along a path within the housing 1210 defined between the first and second ports 1211, 1212).
[0143] The conduit 1230 of the device 1200 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the conduit 1230 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the conduits 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, and / or 1130 described above. Fig.26 As shown, the conduit 1230 is at least partially disposed within the housing 1210 and is configured to engage or be engaged by at least a portion of the one or more actuators. For example, in some embodiments, the form and / or arrangement of the conduit 1230 within the housing 1210 can be substantially similar to the form and / or arrangement of the conduit 930 described in detail above.
[0144] The first actuator 1250A is disposed within the first portion of the housing 1210 and includes a set of engagement structures 1257A. More particularly, the first actuator 1250A includes a pair of engagement structures 1257A that are disposed in a mirror image orientation relative to each other such that a first internal passage 1258A or path is defined therebetween, as described in detail above with reference to the actuator 950. Fig.26In the illustrated embodiment, the engagement structure 1257A can have, for example, a hemispherical shape. In other embodiments, the engagement structure can be any suitable shape and / or size, such as a teardrop shape and / or any other suitable shape. The second actuator 1250B is disposed in the second portion of the housing 1210 and includes a set of engagement structures 1257B. The engagement structures 1257B can be substantially similar to the engagement structures 1257A in shape, size and / or configuration. Therefore, the engagement structures 1257B define a second internal passage 1258B therebetween.
[0145] As described above with reference to devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100, device 1200 is configured to transition from a first configuration and / or state to a second configuration and / or state in response to rotation of actuator 1250, as indicated by arrow PP. When device 1200 is in the first configuration and / or state, conduit 1230 is configured to be in a first position such that a largest or substantially largest portion or length of conduit 1230 is disposed within housing 1210 and between first port 1211 and second port 1212 (e.g., within one or more lumens (e.g., external passages or portions thereof) and / or internal passages 1258A and 1258B defined by housing 1210). When device 1200 is in the second configuration and / or state, conduit 1230 is configured to be in a second position such that a smallest or substantially smallest portion or length of conduit 1230 is disposed within housing 1210 and between first port 1211 and second port 1212. Although not shown, in the embodiment of the present invention, the conduit 1230 may be configured to be in a first position such that a smallest or substantially smallest portion or length of conduit 1230 is disposed within housing 1210 and between first port 1211 and second port 1212. Fig.26 In the illustrated embodiment, the device 1200 can be configured such that the catheter 1230 extends along a substantially straight path defined at least in part by the internal channels 1258A and 1258B between the first port 1211 and the second port 1212 when the device 1200 is in the second configuration and / or state. In addition, as described in detail above, when the catheter 1230 is in the second position, the distal portion 1232 of the catheter 1230 can be placed in a desired position (e.g., a distal position) relative to the second port 1212 and / or an access device coupled to the second port 1212. In some embodiments, the arrangement and / or construction of the device 1200 can allow the catheter 1230 to have an increased length relative to the catheter length of, for example, the devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100.
[0146] Fig. 27A fluid delivery device 1300 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 1300 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1300 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, and / or 1200 described above. More particularly, device 1300 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to devices 900, 1000, 1100, and / or 1200 (or any suitable combination thereof) described in detail above. Therefore, the portions of device 1300 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0147] As shown, the device 1300 includes at least a housing 1310, a catheter 1330, and an actuator 1350. The housing 1310 can be of any suitable construction. In some embodiments, the housing 1310 and / or portions thereof can be substantially similar to the housings 910, 1010, and / or 1110 described above in at least form and / or function. For example, the housing 1310 includes a first port 1311 configured to fixedly receive a proximal portion 1331 of the catheter 1330 and a second port 1312 configured to receive a distal portion 1332 of the catheter 1330. Therefore, the various portions and / or aspects of the housing 1310 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0148] The conduit 1330 of the device 1300 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the conduit 1330 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to the conduits 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, and / or 1230 described above. Fig. 27 As shown, conduit 1330 is at least partially disposed within housing 1310 and is configured to engage or be engaged by at least a portion of actuator 1350. For example, in some embodiments, the form and / or arrangement of conduit 1330 within housing 1310 can be substantially similar to the form and / or arrangement of conduit 930 described in detail above.
[0149] The actuator 1350 of the device 1300 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. In some embodiments, the actuator 1350 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to the actuators 950, 1050, 1150, and / or 1250 described in detail above. However, the actuator 1350 can be different from the actuators 950, 1050, 1150, and / or 1250 by including a first mandrel structure 1354A and a second mandrel structure 1354B. Each of the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B includes a pair of engagement structures 1357A and 1357B, respectively. The engagement structures 1357A and 1357B can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. In addition, the joining structures 1357A collectively define at least a portion of the first internal passage 1358A, and the joining structures 1357B collectively define at least a portion of the second internal passage 1358B, as described above with reference to devices 900 , 100 , 1100 , and / or 1200 .
[0150] like Fig. 27 As shown, the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B are configured to be disposed in a concentric arrangement in the housing 1310. For example, the first mandrel structure 1354A can be disposed in the housing 1310 such that the outer channel 1315 is defined by the outer surface of the first mandrel structure 1354A and the inner surface of the housing 1310, as described above with reference to the device 900. The second mandrel structure 1354B is at least partially disposed within the first mandrel structure 1354A (e.g., between the pair of engagement structures 1357A). In addition, the arrangement of the second mandrel structure 1354B within the first mandrel structure 1357A is such that at least a portion of the first internal channel 1358A is defined by the inner surface of the engagement structure 1357A of the first mandrel structure 1354A and the outer surface of the engagement structure 1357B of the second mandrel structure 1354B.
[0151] As described above with reference to the actuator 950, the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B can be at least partially disposed within the housing 1310 and configured to guide, direct, and / or engage at least a portion of the conduit 1330 disposed within the housing 1310. For example, the conduit 1330 can be coiled, wrapped, and / or wrapped around the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B such that when the conduit 1330 is in a first configuration and / or position, a portion of the conduit 1330 extends from the first port 1311 of the housing 1310, through at least a first portion of the outer passage 1315, through the first and second inner passages 1358A, 1358B, through at least a second portion of the outer passage 1315, and into the second port 1312. In this manner, the catheter 1330 can be coiled, wrapped, and / or wrapped about the mandrel structure 1354 in a similar manner as described above with reference to the catheter 930 and the mandrel structure 954 (eg, minus the second internal channel 1358B).
[0152] As described above with reference to devices 900, 1000, 1100, and / or 1200, device 1300 is configured to transition from a first configuration and / or state to a second configuration and / or state in response to rotation of actuator 1350. For example, in some embodiments, a user may rotate the actuator in a counterclockwise direction, which in turn rotates first mandrel structure 1354A in a counterclockwise direction, such as Fig. 27 The arrangement of the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B and / or the arrangement of the conduit 1330 passing through the internal passages 1358A and 1358B can be such that a counterclockwise rotation of the first mandrel structure 1354A causes the second mandrel structure 1354B to rotate in a clockwise direction, as shown in FIG. Fig. 27 . The conduit 1330 is configured to be in a first position when the device 1300 is in a first configuration and / or state, such that a larger or substantially largest portion or length of the conduit 1330 is disposed within the housing 1310 and between the first port 1311 and the second port 1312 (e.g., within one or more lumens or channels and / or internal channels 1358A and 1358B defined by the housing 1310). The conduit 1330 is configured to be in a second position when the device 1300 is in a second configuration and / or state, such that a smallest or substantially smallest portion or length of the conduit 1330 is disposed within the housing 1310 and between the first port 1311 and the second port 1312. Although not shown, in Fig. 27In the illustrated embodiment, the device 1300 can be configured such that the catheter 1330 extends along a substantially straight path defined at least in part by the internal channels 1358A and 1358B between the first port 1311 and the second port 1312 when the device 1300 is in the second configuration and / or state. In addition, as described in detail above, when the catheter 1330 is in the second position, the distal portion 1332 of the catheter 1330 can be placed in a desired position (e.g., a distal position) relative to the second port 1312 and / or an access device coupled to the second port 1312. In some embodiments, the arrangement and / or construction of the device 1300 can allow the catheter 1330 to have an increased length relative to, for example, the catheter length of at least the devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100.
[0153] Although the portion of the catheter 1330 is Fig. 27 1350 as being wrapped, looped, and / or coiled around and / or through the mandrel structures 1354A and 1354B of the actuator 1350, but in other embodiments, the device may include a conduit configured to be at least partially disposed in a housing of the device in any suitable configuration. For example, Figure 28-30 Device 1400 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 1400 (also referred to herein as "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1400 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, and / or 1300 described above. Therefore, the portions of device 1400 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0154] Device 1400 includes at least housing 1410, catheter 1430, and actuator 1450. Housing 1410 may be of any suitable construction. As described above with reference to previous embodiments, housing 1410 includes a first port 1411 configured to be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion 1431 of catheter 1430 and a second port 1412 configured to receive a distal portion 1432 of catheter 1430. However, housing 1410 may differ in having a cavity structure 1416 and an extension structure 1418. Figure 28-30As shown, the cavity structure 1416 can be disposed at or near the proximal portion of the housing 1410 and can be coupled to and / or otherwise include the first port 1411 (e.g., a proximal port). The extension structure 1416 is coupled to the cavity structure 1416 and can be disposed at or near the distal portion of the housing 1410. The extension structure 1416 can be coupled to and / or can otherwise include the second port 1412 (e.g., a distal port).
[0155] like Figure 28-30 As shown, the cavity structure 1416 can be substantially conical or similarly shaped, having a base end or base surface (e.g., a larger end or larger surface) that forms a proximal surface of the housing 1410 and a top end (e.g., a smaller end) that is coupled to the extension structure 1418. Thus, in this embodiment, the housing 1410 can have a substantially funnel-shaped shape. The cavity structure 1416 is configured to hold at least a portion of the catheter 1410. More specifically, prior to placing the catheter 1430 in the second position, the cavity structure 1416 can hold and / or accommodate at least a portion of the catheter 1430 in a coiled, coiled, wrapped and / or looped configuration and / or arrangement, such as Fig.28 and 29 The extension structure 1418 can be configured to hold and / or receive at least the distal portion 1432 of the catheter 1430 in, for example, a linear, straight, and / or substantially non-coiled configuration and / or arrangement.
[0156] The catheter 1430 of the device 1400 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 1430 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230, and / or 1330 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 1430 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Figure 28-30 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 1430 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0157] At least a portion of the conduit 1430 is movably disposed within the housing 1410. In some embodiments, the conduit 1430 or a portion thereof can be in a first position ( Fig.28 ) and the second position ( Fig.30), in a first position, a portion of the catheter 1430 is coiled and / or wrapped in the cavity structure 1416, and a distal portion 1432 of the catheter 1430 is disposed within the extension structure 1418 and / or the second port 1412, and in a second position, at least a portion of the catheter 1430 extends through the second port 1412 and through at least a portion of an access device (not shown) coupled to the second port 1412. In some embodiments, the catheter 1430 can have a length sufficient to place a distal surface of the catheter 1430 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of the access device when the catheter 1430 is in the second position, as described in detail above.
[0158] The actuator 1450 of the device 1400 can be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Figure 28-30 As shown, the actuator 1450 includes a first portion 1451 and a second portion 1452. The actuator 1450 can be coupled to the extension structure 1418 of the housing 1410 at or near the second port 1412. In other embodiments, the actuator 1450 can be coupled to the housing 1410 at any suitable location along the length of the housing 1410. The actuator 1450 can be coupled to the housing 1410 in any suitable manner that allows the actuator 1450 to rotate relative to the housing 1410. In addition, the actuator 1450 can be coupled to the housing 1410 such that the second portion 1452 is at least partially disposed within the housing 1410 and contacts the conduit 1430 and / or otherwise allows engagement with the conduit. In this manner, the actuator 1450 can be similar in at least form and / or function to the actuator 1450 described above with reference to the embodiment of the present invention. Figure 3 and 4 The described actuator 250 is substantially similar.
[0159] In use, the device 1400 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which a portion of the catheter 1430 (e.g., the proximal portion 1431) is coiled and / or wrapped in the cavity structure 1416, and the distal portion 1432 of the catheter 1430 is disposed in the extension structure 1418 and / or the second port 1412 ( Fig.28 ), a user may manipulate the device 1400 by engaging the first portion 1451 of the actuator 1450 to convert the device 1400 into a second configuration and / or state ( Fig.30 ). For example, a user may apply a force on the first portion 1451 of the actuator 1450 to rotate the actuator 1450 in a clockwise direction, for example. Fig.29Thus, the second portion 1452 of the actuator 1450 rotates relative to the housing 1410 and engages the catheter 1430 to move the catheter 1430 in the distal direction from the first position toward the second position, as shown in FIG. Fig.29 TT in FIG. The movement and / or transition of catheter 1430 from the first position toward the second position causes catheter 1430 to unwind and / or unfold within cavity structure 1416 and be allowed to advance (e.g., in a linear direction) through extension structure 1418. In some cases, the funnel shape of housing 1410 can cause catheter 1430 to contact an inner surface of housing 1410 (e.g., an inner surface of cavity structure 1416) and / or be otherwise guided or directed by the inner surface of housing 1410. Fig.30 As shown, in some cases, when the catheter 1430 is in the second position, the catheter 1430 can be fully extended (e.g., substantially straight or linear). In some embodiments, when the second port 1412 of the housing 1410 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the catheter 1430 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 100.
[0160] Despite Figure 28-30 1410, but in some embodiments, the housing 1410 and / or the cavity structure 1416 further includes one or more internal structures within the cavity structure 1416 that are configured to guide and / or direct the winding (or unwinding), wrapping (or unwinding), coiling (or unfolding), etc. of the catheter 1430. For example, Figure 31-33 A fluid delivery device 1500 is shown according to another embodiment. Fluid delivery device 1500 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1500 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, and / or 1400 described above. More particularly, device 1500 can be similar in at least form and / or function to the devices described above with reference to the drawings. Figure 28-30 The described apparatus 1400 is substantially similar. Therefore, parts of the apparatus 1500 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0161] Device 1500 includes at least housing 1510, conduit 1530, and actuator 1550. Housing 1510 may be similar in at least form and / or function to that described above. Figure 28-30The housing 1410 described is substantially similar. For example, the housing 1510 includes a cavity structure 1516 disposed at or near a proximal portion of the housing 1510 and an extension structure 1518 coupled to the cavity structure 1516 and disposed at or near a distal portion of the housing 1510. The cavity structure 1516 can be coupled to and / or otherwise include a first port 1511 (e.g., a proximal port), and the extension structure 1516 can be coupled to and / or otherwise include a second port 1512 (e.g., a distal port). The first port 1511 is configured to be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion 1531 of a catheter 1530, and the second port 1512 is configured to receive a distal portion 1532 of the catheter 1530, as described in detail above with reference to the housing 1410.
[0162] However, housing 1510 may differ from housing 1410 by including an internal structure 1517 disposed within cavity structure 1516. As shown, internal structure 1517 may be, for example, a conical internal structure adjacent to and / or extending from a proximal end or proximal surface of housing 1510. Internal structure 1517 is configured to be conical when catheter 1530 is in the first position ( Fig.31 ) and the second position ( Fig.33 ), and / or support and / or guide at least a portion of a catheter 1530 disposed within the cavity structure 1516 as the catheter 1530 moves between the housing 1510 and the actuator 1550. For example, in some embodiments, the internal structure 1517 and the inner surface of the cavity structure 1516 can collectively define a relatively small space and / or volume capable of receiving at least a portion of the catheter 1530, as described in further detail herein. In addition, the internal structure 1516 and / or the inner surface of the cavity structure 1516 can selectively contact, support and / or guide the catheter 1530 as the catheter 1530 advances through the housing 1510. In some embodiments, all or substantially all of the catheter 1530 disposed in the housing 1510 can be supported by a portion of the housing 1510 and / or the actuator 1550. Although in Figure 31-33 Not shown, but the arrangement of the internal structure 1517 may include openings, couplers, and / or any other suitable features configured to allow the first port 1511 to be fixedly coupled to the proximal portion 1531 of the catheter 1530 .
[0163] The catheter 1530 of the device 1500 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 1530 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to any of the catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230, 1330, and / or 1430 described above. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 1530 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in Figure 31-33 In the illustrated embodiment, catheter 1530 can be formed from any suitable material and can have any suitable length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to catheter 130 .
[0164] At least a portion of the conduit 1530 is movably disposed within the housing 1510. In some embodiments, the conduit 1530 or a portion thereof can be moved between a first position and a second position (eg, by rotational movement of the actuator 1550). Fig.31 As shown, when the catheter 1530 is in the first position, a portion of the catheter 1530 is coiled and / or wrapped around the inner structure 1517 within the cavity structure 1516, and the distal portion 1532 of the catheter 1530 is disposed within the extension structure 1518 and / or the second port 1512. Fig.33 As shown, when catheter 1530 is in the second position, at least a portion of catheter 1530 extends through second port 1512 and through at least a portion of an access device (not shown) coupled to second port 1512. In some embodiments, catheter 1530 can have a length sufficient to position a distal surface of catheter 1530 a predetermined, desired, and / or at least a threshold distance beyond a distal surface of an access device when catheter 1530 is in the second position, as described in detail above.
[0165] The actuator 1550 of the device 1500 can be of any suitable shape, size and / or configuration. Figure 31-33 As shown, the actuator 1550 includes a first portion 1551 and a second portion 1552. The actuator 1550 can be coupled to the extension structure 1518 of the housing 1510 at or near the second port 1512. In other embodiments, the actuator 1550 can be coupled to the housing 1510 at any suitable location along the length of the housing 1510. The actuator 1550 can be coupled to the housing 1510 in any suitable manner that allows the actuator 1550 to rotate relative to the housing 1510. In addition, the actuator 1550 can be coupled to the housing 1510 such that the second portion 1552 is at least partially disposed within the housing 1510 and contacts the conduit 1530 and / or otherwise allows engagement with the conduit. In this manner, the actuator 1550 can be similar in at least form and / or function to the actuator 1550 described above with reference to the embodiment of the present invention. Figure 3 and 4 The described actuator 250 is substantially similar.
[0166] In use, the device 1500 can be in a first configuration and / or state in which a portion of the catheter 1530 (e.g., the proximal portion 1531) is coiled and / or wrapped around the inner structure 1517 within the cavity structure 1516, and the distal portion 1532 of the catheter 1530 is disposed at the extension structure 1518 and / or the second port 1512 ( Fig.31 ), a user may manipulate the device 1500 by engaging the first portion 1551 of the actuator 1550 to cause the device 1500 to transition to or toward the second configuration and / or state ( Fig.33 ) conversion. For example, a user can apply a force on the first portion 1551 of the actuator 1550 to rotate the actuator 1550 in, for example, a clockwise direction, such as Fig.32 . In this way, the second portion 1552 of the actuator 1550 rotates relative to the housing 1510 and engages the catheter 1530 to move the catheter 1530 in the distal direction from the first position toward the second position. The movement and / or conversion of the catheter 1530 causes the catheter 1530 to unwind and / or unfold within the cavity structure 1516 and be allowed to advance (e.g., in a linear direction) through the extension structure 1518. In some cases, the conical shape of the internal structure 1517 and the conical shape of the inner surface of the cavity structure 1516 can cause the catheter 1530 to contact and / or be otherwise guided or directed when the catheter 1530 moves from the first position toward the second position. As shown in FIG. Fig.33 As shown, in some cases, when the catheter 1530 is in the second position, the catheter 1530 can be fully extended (e.g., substantially straight or linear). In some embodiments, when the second port 1512 of the housing 1510 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the catheter 1530 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 150.
[0167] Figure 34-39 A fluid delivery device 1600 according to another embodiment is shown. Fluid delivery device 1600 (also referred to herein as a "device") can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, at least a portion of device 1600 can be similar and / or substantially the same as one or more portions (and / or combinations of portions) of devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, and / or 1500 described above. More particularly, device 1600 can be substantially similar in at least form and / or function to devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100 (or any suitable combination thereof) described in detail above. Therefore, the portions of device 1600 may not be described in further detail herein.
[0168] Device 1600 includes at least a housing 1610, a catheter 1630, and an actuator 1650. Housing 1610 may be substantially similar to housings 910, 1010, and 1110 described in detail above. For example, housing 1610 includes a first port 1611, which may be configured to couple to and / or otherwise receive a proximal portion 1631 of catheter 1630, and a second port 1612, which may be configured to receive a distal portion 1632 of catheter 1630. In some embodiments, first port 1611 may be configured to be fixedly coupled to proximal portion 1631 of catheter 1630, as described above with reference to devices 700, 800, 900, 1000, and 1100. Housing 1610 may be of any suitable shape, size, or configuration. In some embodiments, housing 1610 or a portion thereof may have a circular cross-sectional shape defined relative to a top view plane. In some embodiments, each of the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 can extend from a circumferential edge or circumferential surface of the housing 1610 (eg, a circumferential surface along the outer circumference of the housing), such as Figure 34-36 As shown. The first port 1611 and the second port 1612 can be positioned along the circumferential edge of the housing so that the axis defined by the lumen of the first port 1611 is substantially parallel to the axis defined by the lumen of the second port 1612. In some embodiments, the first port 1611 of the housing 1610 can be closed by a cover 1619, which is configured to receive at least a portion of the conduit 1630 to protect the at least a portion of the conduit 1630 from undesirable bending, buckling and / or kinking. In some embodiments, the cover 1619 includes and / or forms a stop 1620, which is configured to limit, restrict and / or otherwise at least partially define a range of motion (e.g., a rotational range of motion) associated with the movement of the actuator 1650.
[0169] The catheter 1630 of the device 1600 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 1630 can be substantially similar to any of the above-described catheters 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230, 1330, 1430, and / or 1530 in at least form and / or function. Therefore, such similar portions and / or aspects of the catheter 1630 may not be described in further detail herein. For example, in some embodiments, the catheter 1630 can be formed of a single material and can have a predetermined length, diameter, and / or configuration, such as those described above with reference to the catheter 130. In other embodiments, the catheter 1630 can be formed of different materials and / or can have different sizes, shapes, diameters, thicknesses, etc. to produce any suitable stiffness, flexibility, hardness, and / or durometer. For example, the proximal portion 1631 of the catheter 1630 can be formed of a flexible material that can deform in response to a sudden change in bending force or pressure. In some cases, the proximal portion 1631 of the catheter 1630 can deform in response to a negative pressure with an amplitude exceeding a negative pressure threshold amount or amplitude, which in turn can reduce the likelihood of a portion of the catheter 1630 collapsing at a location downstream of the proximal portion 1631 (e.g., the distal portion 1632 and / or any other suitable portion). The distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630 can be formed of a relatively rigid material, or a material having a hardness or stiffness that is at least greater than the hardness or stiffness of the proximal portion 1631 of the catheter 1630. In some embodiments, the diameter of the distal portion 1632 can be smaller than the diameter of the proximal portion 1631 to facilitate advancing at least a portion of the catheter 1630 to and / or from a desired position relative to the PIV. In some embodiments, the proximal portion 1631 and the distal portion 1632 of the conduit 1630 can be separate components of different lengths, lengths, diameters, and / or configurations that can be mechanically and fluidically connected at or within, for example, the first port 1611, the cover 1619, and / or any other suitable portion of the housing 1610. For example, in some embodiments, an auxiliary conduit or external conduit can be disposed outside of the housing 1610 and can include a distal portion that is at least partially disposed in the first port 1611 and / or the cover 1619 and coupled to the proximal portion of the conduit 1630 using any suitable coupler, adapter, connector, and / or the like.
[0170] As described with reference to device 100, in some cases, proximal portion 1631 of catheter 1630 can include a clamp 1633 that can be configured to physically and / or fluidically couple to a fluid source and / or fluid reservoir (e.g., a sample bottle). In this way, a volume of fluid (e.g., bodily fluid, medication, saline, etc.) can be transferred between catheter 1630 and a fluid source or fluid reservoir (and vice versa) via coupling 1633. In some embodiments, coupling 1633 can be a clamp, a grommet, an O-ring, a compression member, a Luer Lok® connector, or a plurality of other connectors. TM and / or any other suitable coupling. For example, Figure 34-36 The connector 1633 is shown to be a female Luer Lok with an integrated clamp. TM .
[0171] The actuator 1650 of the device 1600 can be of any suitable shape, size, and / or configuration. In some embodiments, the actuator 1650 can be substantially similar to the actuators 950 and / or 1050 described in detail above. For example, Figure 34-37 As shown, the actuator 1650 is at least partially disposed within the housing 1610 and has a spindle structure 1654 that is movably coupled to the housing 1610. Fig.34 , 36 As shown in FIGS. 37 and 37 , the mandrel structure 1654 includes a pair of engagement structures 1657 that are arranged in a mirror-image orientation relative to each other and define: (1) an internal channel or path 1658 located between its internal portions, inner portions and / or adjacent portions; and (2) an external channel 1615 defined between an external portion or outer portion and / or an external surface or outer surface of the mandrel structure 1654 and an internal portion or inner portion and / or an internal surface or inner surface (e.g., an inner periphery) of the shell 1610.
[0172] As shown, the actuator 1650 includes an engagement feature 1659 disposed on the exterior of the actuator 1650 (e.g., exterior of the housing 1610). In some embodiments, a user can engage the engagement feature 1659, contact the engagement feature, and / or apply force on the engagement feature to move the actuator 1650 relative to the housing 1610 (e.g., to move the actuator 1650 about the housing 1610). Fig.34 and 351699). As described above with reference to devices 900, 1000, and / or 1100, movement of actuator 1650 causes and / or otherwise results in at least a portion of conduit 1630 that is wrapped or coiled within housing 1610 advancing through one or more portions of housing 1610. Additionally, as shown, engagement feature 1659 is disposed at or near a periphery or edge of actuator 1650. To prevent winding (or unwinding) of conduit 1630 from extending beyond a predetermined position, cover 1619 may include a stop feature 1620 positioned in the path of engagement feature 1659 along the periphery of actuator 1650 (or housing 1610) to constrain or at least partially define movement of engagement feature 1659 and thereby constrain or at least partially define movement of actuator 1650 relative to housing 1610.
[0173] The conduit 1630 is disposed within the housing 1610 such that a portion of the conduit 1630 is disposed within at least one of the outer passage 1615 and / or the inner passage 1658 and is configured to be advanced therethrough (eg, through the housing 1610) in response to actuation of the actuator 1650. For example, Fig.34 , 36 39 show the device 1600 in a first configuration and / or state in which the conduit 1630 is in a first position. When the conduit 1630 is in the first position, a portion of the conduit 1630 can extend from the first port 1611, through the first portion 1615A of the outer passage 1615, through the inner passage 1658, through the second portion 1615B of the outer passage, and into the second port 1612. Fig.39As shown, when the device 1600 is in the first configuration and / or state, the conduit 1630 can be delivered through the first portion 1615A of the outer channel 1615 to a position near the second port 1612. Rather than extending from the first portion 1615A of the outer channel 1615 into the second port 1612, the conduit 1630 extends from a position near the second port 1612 through the inner channel 1658 to a position near the first port 1611. In this way, the conduit 1630 is substantially wrapped around one of the engagement structures 1657. From a position at or near the first port 1611, the conduit 1630 further extends through the second portion 1615B of the outer channel 1615 (e.g., at least partially defined by another engagement structure 1657) and extends to a position at or near the second port 1612 or at least partially within the second port 1612. In this position and / or orientation, the path along the external channel 1615 and the internal channel 1658 extending through the conduit 1630 between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 is, for example, the longest or substantially the longest path between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 of the housing 1610, and when the device 1600 is in a first configuration and / or state (for example, when the actuator 1650 and / or the conduit 1630 is in a first position), the largest or substantially the largest portion of the conduit 1630 is disposed within the housing 1610.
[0174] By manipulating the engagement feature 1659 of the actuator 1650 to move or rotate the actuator 1650 in a clockwise direction about a central axis 1699 defined by the housing 1610, the actuator 1650, such as Fig.34 As indicated by arrow (or arrows) VV in the figure, the device 1600 can be converted from a first configuration and / or state to a second configuration and / or state. The movement of the actuator 1650 causes the spindle structure 1654 and the engagement structure 1657 to rotate, which in turn changes the portion of the outer channel 1615 disposed between the first port 1611 and the first end portion of the inner channel 1658 (at or near the second port 1612) and the portion of the outer channel 1615 disposed between the second port 1612 and the second end portion of the inner channel 1658 opposite the first end portion (at or near the first port 1611), as shown in FIG. Fig.35More particularly, the two portions of the outer passage 1615 are reduced, which in turn is operable to advance the conduit 1630 from its first position toward its second position through a serpentine, circuitous, tortuous, and / or otherwise curved or non-linear path formed and / or defined by the outer passage 1615 and the inner passage 1658 together. In other words, rotation of the actuator 1650 relative to the housing 1610 causes rotation of the engagement structure 1657 relative to the first port 1611 and the second port 1612. In addition, the rotation of the engagement structure 1657 moves and / or changes the orientation of the inner passage 1658 relative to the first port 1611 and the second port 1612.
[0175] The engagement feature 1659 can be manipulated to move the actuator 1650 by a predetermined and / or desired amount, thereby placing the device 1600 in a second configuration and / or state in which the conduit 1630 is located in a second position. In some embodiments, the actuator 1650 can be rotated about 180° to convert the device 1600 from the first configuration to the second configuration. In this position and / or orientation, the external channel 1615 and the internal channel 1658 can define, for example, the shortest path through the housing 1610 between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612. For example, in some embodiments, the arrangement of the engagement structure 1657 is such that when the device 1600 is in the second configuration and / or state, the conduit 1630 can extend between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 via the internal channel 1658 and does not substantially extend through the external channel 1615 (e.g., neither extending through the first portion of the external channel 1615 nor through the second portion thereof).
[0176] As described in detail above with reference to previous embodiments, the arrangement of the device 1600 can allow the conduit 1630 to have a length or "reach" that is, for example, longer than the housing 1610 and / or longer than the length of the housing 1610 between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 (e.g., through the internal passage 1658). Thus, when the second port 1612 of the housing 1610 is coupled to an access device or the like (not shown), the conduit 1630 can be advanced to a desired position relative to the access device in the event that the device 1600 has an inappropriate length, regardless of the type and / or length of the access device, as described in detail above with reference to the device 100.
[0177] The arrangement of the device 1600 is such that manipulating the engagement feature 1659 to move or rotate the actuator 1650 by an angular amount or distance (e.g., a rotational amount) results in the distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630 moving by a linear amount or distance. In other words, the linear displacement (e.g., translation) of the distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630 is achieved by the angular displacement (e.g., rotation) of the actuator 1650. In some embodiments, the actuator 1650, the mandrel structure 1654, and / or the engagement structure 1659 are configured to achieve a "length multiplication" and / or "displacement multiplication" effect and / or are otherwise configured to provide a mechanical advantage such that a relatively small amount of rotation of the engagement feature 1659 of the actuator 1650 results in a relatively large amount of translation (or at least a translation amount greater than the amount of rotation) of the distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630.
[0178] As described above, movement of the actuator 1650 causes the distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630 to move a certain amount or distance in a linear direction. Such movement of the actuator applies a force on the portion of the catheter 1630 that is wrapped or coiled within the housing 1610. The arrangement of the device 1600 is such that all or substantially all of the portion of the catheter 1630 disposed within the housing 1610 is supported by surfaces of the housing 1610 and / or the actuator 1650 that define the outer passage 1615 and / or the inner passage 1658, which surfaces can, for example, provide tangential support along the portion of the catheter 1630 disposed within the housing 1610 when the actuator 1650 applies an operable force to move the catheter 1630 through the housing 1610. As a result, the catheter 1630 can be advanced to avoid undesirable bends, kinks, or deformations that may otherwise be associated with "pushing" or advancing an unsupported section of a catheter (or other relatively flexible tube, member, etc.).
[0179] In some embodiments, a portion of the catheter 1630 disposed within the housing 1610 (e.g., a portion that is wrapped or coiled within the housing 1610) can be advanced along a support path or trajectory defined by: an inner surface of an engagement structure 1657 that defines the interior passage 1615; and / or an outer surface of an engagement structure 1657 that defines the exterior passage 1658 and a corresponding inner surface of the housing 1610 in response to movement of the actuator 1650. Thus, when the actuator 1650 moves, the portion of the catheter 1630 disposed within the housing 1610 is supported, guided, directed, and / or otherwise permitted to move along the support path or trajectory, which in turn limits and / or substantially prevents undesirable deformation, coiling, bowing, and / or deflection of one or more portions of the catheter 1630 within the housing 1650, which may limit and / or substantially prevent desired linear displacement of the distal portion 1632 of the catheter 1630.
[0180] Although actuator 1650 has been described as moving and / or being moved in a clockwise direction to convert device 1600 from a first configuration and / or state to a second configuration and / or state, as shown in FIG. Fig.34 , but the actuator 1650 may alternatively be configured to move in a counterclockwise direction to convert the device 1600 from the first configuration and / or state to the second configuration and / or state. For example, the arrangement of the mandrel structure 1654 and / or the arrangement of the conduit 1630 passing through the internal passage 1658 may be reversed relative to the in-plane axis of the device 1600, so that the counterclockwise movement of the actuator 1650 changes the portion of the external passage 1615 disposed between the first port 1611 and the first end portion of the internal passage 1658 and the portion of the external passage 1615 disposed between the second port 1612 and the second end portion of the internal passage 1658 opposite the first end portion.
[0181] In some cases, the user can rotate the actuator 1650 in a first direction to convert the device from the first configuration to the second configuration, and thereby advance the catheter 1630 from the first position to the second position, as described in detail above. In some cases, the user can rotate the actuator 1650 in a second direction opposite to the first direction after the device has been converted from the first configuration to the second configuration, so that the catheter 1630 is withdrawn from the second position to the first position, or withdrawn to a position such that a large portion or a large section of the catheter 1630 is disposed within the housing 1610 and between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612. Alternatively, in some cases, the user may first rotate the actuator 1650 to convert the device from the first configuration to the second configuration and thereby advance the catheter 1630 from the first position to the second position, and then continue to rotate the actuator 1650 in the same direction to retract the catheter 1630 from the second position to a third position in which a portion or section of the catheter 1630 is disposed within the housing 1610 and between the first port 1611 and the second port 1612 (e.g., the catheter 1630 is looped around the actuator 1650 in opposite directions). For example, in some embodiments, the actuator 1650 may be rotated approximately 180° to move the catheter 1630 from the first position to the second position, and then may be rotated more than 180° (e.g., until the engagement feature 1659 hits the stop 1620) to move the catheter from the second position to the third position.
[0182] Now refer to Fig.40, a flowchart is presented showing a method 10 of using a fluid delivery device to deliver fluid to or from a patient through an indwelling vascular access device according to one embodiment. The fluid delivery device can be similar and / or substantially the same as any of the fluid delivery devices 100, 200, 300, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 and / or 1600 described in detail above. Thus, a fluid delivery device (also referred to herein as a "device") may include a housing, a catheter at least partially disposed in the housing, and an actuator coupled to the housing and selectively engaging the catheter. The housing includes a first port and a second port. The first port can be fixedly coupled to a proximal portion of the catheter. Method 10 includes coupling the second port of the housing to the indwelling vascular access device at step 11. For example, in some embodiments, a user can manipulate the fluid delivery device to physically and fluidically couple the second port of the housing of the fluid delivery device to an indwelling vascular access device, such as an indwelling peripheral intravenous line (PIV) and extended indwelling PIV, a midline PIV, a PICC line, and / or the like. The arrangement of the catheter of the fluid delivery device can be such that the proximal portion of the catheter is fixedly coupled to and / or otherwise maintained in a fixed position relative to the first port. In some embodiments, the second port of the housing can be and / or can include a Luer Lok TM , “Clip-Lock-Snap” connectors, and / or the like that are configured to physically and fluidically couple to, for example, a PIV.
[0183] At step 12, the actuator of the fluid delivery device is rotated an angular distance around a central axis defined by a housing of the fluid delivery device. For example, in some embodiments, the housing can define a range of motion of the actuator. The housing can include structures, features, components, and / or the like that can selectively engage a portion of the actuator to limit, constrain, guide, and / or otherwise direct the amount or direction of motion of a portion of the actuator. Thus, based at least in part on the size and / or arrangement of a portion of the actuator, the size and / or arrangement of a portion of the housing, and / or the like, the actuator can be rotated within a desired range of motion and / or within a desired angular displacement, similar to the actuators described in detail with reference to devices 900, 1000, 1100, and 1600.
[0184] At step 13, in response to the rotation of the actuator, the distal portion of the catheter advances a linear distance from the first position to the second position. In the first position, the distal portion of the catheter is located in the housing, and in the second position, the distal portion of the catheter is located at the distal side of the indwelling vascular access device. The distal portion of the catheter advances linearly through the second port and the indwelling access device along a direction orthogonal to the central axis. In some embodiments, the actuator rotates a rotational position and / or angular displacement to advance, coil (or unfold), wind (or unwind) and / or move in other ways the distal portion of the catheter disposed in the housing. For example, the rotation of the actuator relative to the housing and the advancement of the catheter (or at least its distal portion) can be substantially similar to the rotation, advancement, etc. described in detail above with reference to device 1600. In this way, the arrangement of the fluid delivery device can make the catheter have a length sufficient to extend a desired distance (for example, at least partially extending to or extending through a standard or short PIV, extended indwelling PIV, midline PIV, PICC line and / or any other suitable access device). Similarly, the catheter can have a length sufficient to allow the second port of the housing to be coupled to any suitable adapter, extension kit, tube, port, etc. In some cases, for example, the catheter can have a length sufficient to extend from the housing, through an IV extension kit and / or any suitable length of tubing connected to an IV extension kit, through a port of the PIV (e.g., a proximal port and / or a side port), and extend to a position within a vein of the patient distal to the PIV.
[0185] Although devices 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, and 1500 have been shown and / or described above as being coupled to an access device such as a PIV, in other embodiments, the devices may be coupled to any suitable access device, introducer, adapter, auxiliary or intermediate device, and the like. For example, in some cases, the second port 212 of the housing 210 of the device 200 may be coupled to an extension kit or the like, which in turn is coupled to an indwelling PIV, such as those described herein. The extension kit may, for example, be a dual-port IV extension kit, such as a "Y-adapter" or a "T-adapter." In this manner, the terms "Y-adapter" and "T-adapter" generally describe the overall shape of a dual-port IV extension kit. In other embodiments, the extension kit may be a single-port IV extension kit. In these embodiments, the devices described herein may include a catheter having a length sufficient to extend from the housing of the device, through an extension kit or other intermediate device, and through an access device to position the distal end of the catheter distal to the access device. In addition, the access device may be any suitable device of any suitable length, such as a standard or short PIV, an extended indwelling PIV, a midline PIV, a PICC line, and / or any other device. In other embodiments, any device described herein may be coupled to any suitable access device or the like and may be used for any suitable procedure, surgical procedure, and the like.
[0186] In some cases, the delivery devices described herein can be assembled in one or more manufacturing processes and packaged in a pre-assembled configuration. For example, in some cases, the assembly of the device can be performed in a substantially sterile environment, such as an ethylene oxide environment or the like. In other embodiments, the delivery devices described herein can be packaged in a non-assembled configuration (e.g., the user can open the package and assemble the components to form the device). The components of the device can be packaged together or separately. In some embodiments, the device can be packaged with, for example, a PIV, an extension kit, a Y-adapter or a T-adapter, and / or any other suitable components.
[0187] Any device described herein can be used in any suitable process, procedure, method and / or the like. For example, in some cases, the devices described herein can be used in medical procedures, processes and / or methods for delivering fluids to or from a patient. Some such procedures can include, for example, drawing a volume of bodily fluid from a patient with the aid of a previously placed or indwelling access device. More particularly, any device described herein can be used to draw a volume of blood from a patient with the aid of a previously placed or indwelling peripheral venous line.
[0188] Although various embodiments have been described above, it should be understood that they are presented only as examples and not in a limiting manner. Although these embodiments have been specifically shown and described, it should be understood that various changes can be made in form and detail. Where the schematic diagrams and / or embodiments described above indicate that certain components are arranged in certain orientations or positions, the arrangement of the components can be modified. Although various embodiments have been described as having a specific combination of specific features and / or components, other embodiments may have any combination of features and / or components from any of the above-described embodiments. For example, as described above, device 400 may be a combination of certain features and / or aspects of devices 200 and 300.
[0189] Although not shown in some of the devices described herein, any housing and / or actuator can include one or more internal supports or the like configured to support the catheter within the housing. Such internal supports can be, for example, guides, tracks, rails, springs, sleeves, protrusions, ribs, channels, sponges, pads, etc., configured to selectively engage a portion of the catheter. In this way, when the device is converted between the first configuration and the second configuration, the internal supports can limit and / or substantially prevent undesirable deformation and / or deflection of a portion of the catheter.
[0190] Although described as limiting and / or substantially preventing the catheter from undesirable deformation and / or deflection, in other embodiments, the catheter can be configured to deflect, flex, bend, and / or reconfigure, but not kink and / or permanently deform. For example, in some cases, the distal surface of the catheter may hit an obstacle or the like when advancing from the first position to the second position, which may at least temporarily hinder and / or prevent further movement of the distal portion of the catheter. In this case, if the user continues to apply force to the actuator, the unsupported portion of the catheter within the housing may bend, flex, flex, deflect, and / or otherwise switch from an "unclutched" configuration to a "clutched" configuration (otherwise operative to move the catheter toward the second position). In other words, a portion of the force applied to the actuator operatively deflects, bends, flexes, flexes, and the like the portion of the catheter within the housing (otherwise operative to advance the catheter toward the second position). In this way, forces transmitted to and / or through the distal surface of the catheter (e.g., on an obstruction) are reduced, which in turn can reduce damage to the catheter, an access device through which the catheter is being advanced (e.g., a PIV), venous structures (e.g., a vein wall), and / or the like.
[0191] In some embodiments, increasing or decreasing the durometer of the catheter, the length of the catheter, the length of the housing, and / or the amount of support provided, for example, by an internal support member (e.g., a guide, track, rail, spring, pad, post, etc.) can allow for adjustment or regulation of the amount of deflection (e.g., "engagement") of the catheter and / or the magnitude of the force transmitted through the catheter. In some embodiments, a portion of the catheter can impact and / or contact an inner surface (e.g., a sidewall) of the housing when bent, flexed, deflected, and / or engaged. In some embodiments, such an arrangement can produce a visual, audible, and / or tactile indication that the distal surface of the catheter has impacted an obstruction. In some embodiments, an internal support member such as a pad or the like (as described above) can be used to "adjust" and / or change, for example, an audible and / or tactile output or indication that the distal surface of the catheter has impacted an obstruction.
[0192] Although not described above with reference to a particular embodiment, it should be understood that any of the embodiments described herein can be manipulated to withdraw the catheter from its second position to its first position. For example, in some cases, after a desired volume of bodily fluid is extracted through the catheter of the device, the user can manipulate the device by moving the actuator in a substantially opposite direction (e.g., rotating in a counterclockwise direction, moving in a proximal direction, and / or any other suitable movement). As a result, the catheter can be withdrawn into the housing. In other words, the user can move the actuator to move and / or convert the catheter in a proximal direction, thereby withdrawing the distal portion of the catheter into the housing (e.g., after use or the like).
[0193] Any aspect and / or feature of the embodiments shown and described herein may be modified to affect the performance of the delivery device. For example, the radius of curvature of a portion of an actuator may be increased or decreased to facilitate movement of a catheter coupled to and / or in contact with that portion of the actuator. In other embodiments, the length of the housing may be increased or decreased to accommodate a catheter having an increased or decreased length, respectively. As another example, any component of the delivery device described herein may be formed of any suitable material that may result in a desired hardness, durometer, and / or stiffness of the component.
[0194] Where the above methods and / or schematics indicate certain events and / or flow patterns that occur in a particular order, the order of certain events and / or flow patterns may be modified. In addition, certain events may be performed simultaneously in parallel processes or sequentially, if possible.
