Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a type of decorative element for a vehicle, which decorative element includes: a main body, which defines an outer face intended to be directed toward the interior of the vehicle and an inner face opposite to the outer face; and at least one guide device, which is used to deploy a vehicle airbag, the guide device being integral with the main body and comprising at least one transverse wall protruding from the inner face of the main body, the transverse wall defining at least a portion of an inner volume for receiving an airbag during deployment of the airbag and defining at least a portion of an upper opening for passage of the deployed airbag, the guide device also comprising at least one flap connected to the transverse wall by a hinge, the flap being movable relative to the transverse wall between a closed position and an open position, in which the flap closes at least a portion of the upper opening and in which the flap releases at least a portion of a channel for the deployed airbag.

[0002] The invention also relates to a method for producing such a decorative element. Background Art

[0003] It is known to provide a decorative element for a vehicle interior, such as an instrument panel, with a guide device (also called a launch channel) which is arranged to guide the airbag towards the vehicle interior through the body of the decorative element when the airbag is inflated and deployed. To this end, the guide device comprises a housing that receives the airbag and forms a channel for guiding the deployment of the airbag through an upper opening of the housing. The upper opening is closed by one or two flaps, which are moved by the airbag towards an open position when the airbag is deployed. The flaps are thus hinged to the wall of the housing so as to be movable relative to the housing between a closed position and an open position.

[0004] It is known to manufacture the body and the guide of the decorative element as a single part, meaning that the body and the guide are integral and made of the same material, for example by injection molding in a molding cavity having the shape of the body and the guide. In this case, the tab is part of the body and the wall of the housing of the guide protrudes from the inner face of the body around the tab. The thickness of each wall is substantially equal to or close to the thickness of the body.

[0005] However, in this case, the injection of material in the moulding cavity leads to the appearance of dents on the outer face of the body opposite the position of the wall on the inner face. These dents are particularly problematic when the outer face of the body forms the visible face of the decorative element or when the outer face is directly covered with a skin, for example via a thermal covering process during which the skin is adapted to the shape of the outer face of the body, i.e. when no foam padding is arranged on the outer face of the body. In fact, in these cases, the dents are clearly visible to the passengers of the vehicle and the aesthetics of the decorative element are not satisfactory. Summary of the invention

[0006] One object of the present invention is to overcome this drawback by proposing a decorative element comprising guide means integral with the body of the decorative element and having a pleasing visual appearance.

[0007] To this end, the present invention relates to a decorative element of the aforementioned type, wherein the guide device comprises an overmolded structure comprising at least one transverse wall portion extending with the thickness of at least a portion of the transverse wall and at least one wing portion extending with the thickness of at least a portion of the wing, the overmolded structure being overmolded from the material of the main body, the guide device also comprising at least one net comprising an end portion overmolded by at least a portion of the transverse wall portion of the overmolded structure and a central portion overmolded by at least a portion of the wing portion of the overmolded structure, the portion of the net extending between the end portion of the net and the central portion of the net forming a hinge of the guide device.

[0008] By providing an overmolded structure comprising a transverse wall portion extending with the thickness of the transverse wall of the guide means, the thickness of the material forming the body and the guide means is reduced around the transverse wall portion of the overmolded structure. Such a thickness reduction prevents the formation of dents on the outer face of the body opposite the location of the transverse wall. Thus, the outer face of the body of the decorative element according to the invention presents a pleasing visual appearance and the decorative element can be used as such or with a skin applied directly on the outer face of the body so as to be visible from the vehicle cabin. Furthermore, the overmolded structure facilitates the integration of the net forming the hinge of the flap into the decorative element.

[0009] The decorative element according to the invention may comprise the following features, which may be considered individually or combined in any technically feasible manner:

[0010] The guide device comprises two transverse walls extending on either side of the inner volume, the overmoulded structure comprising two transverse wall portions, each transverse wall portion extending with the thickness of one of the two transverse walls of the guide device.

[0011] - the guide device comprises two flaps which together close the upper opening in the closed position and together release the passage for the deployed airbag in the open position, each flap being connected to one of the transverse walls by a hinge of a flap portion of the overmolded structure extending with the thickness of the two flaps.

[0012] - The two opposite ends of the net are overmolded by at least a part of the transverse wall portion of the overmolded structure, the part of the net extending between the ends and the central part forming two hinges between the transverse wall of the guide device and the flaps, the flaps being connected by a tearable part, the central part and the tearable part of the net being arranged to rupture during deployment of the airbag to allow the two flaps to move between a closed position and an open position.

[0013] - the guide device comprises at least two longitudinal walls extending between the ends of the transverse walls and delimiting together with said transverse walls an inner volume, the overmolded structure comprising at least two longitudinal wall portions, each longitudinal wall portion extending by at least a part of the thickness of one of the longitudinal walls.

[0014] - The transverse wall of the guide means has a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the body between the inner face and the outer face.

[0015] The material of the overmoulded structure is the same as the material forming the body.

[0016] The guide device comprises at least one screw shaft for attaching the airbag module to the guide device, the overmolded structure comprising at least one screw shaft portion which forms the screw shaft and is at least partially overmolded from the material of the body.

[0017] According to another aspect, the invention relates to a method for producing a decorative element as described above, the method comprising at least the following steps:

[0018] - overmolding the structure in a first molding cavity having the shape of the overmolded structure, the mesh being placed in the first molding cavity such that the mesh is overmolded by the overmolded structure during molding of the overmolded structure,

[0019] - Moulding the main body in a second moulding cavity having the shape of the main body, the overmoulded structure being placed in the second moulding cavity such that the overmoulded structure is overmoulded by the main body during moulding of the main body.

[0020] According to an optional feature of the method according to the invention, the first mould cavity and the second mould cavity are parts of the same moulding tool, the overmoulded structure for a subsequent trim element being produced together with a trim element comprising a previously produced overmoulded structure. [0026] refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 , a trim element 1 is described comprising a body 2 and a guide device 4. The trim element is for example an instrument panel, more specifically an instrument panel having a visible face formed by an outer face 6 of the body 2 or by a skin extending directly on the outer face 6 of the body 2. "Direct extension" means that the skin is applied on the outer face 6 of the body 2 without an intermediate layer, such as a foam layer, extending between the outer face 6 and the skin.

[0027] The outer face 6 of the body 2 faces the interior of the vehicle, and the body 2 includes an inner face 8 that extends opposite the outer face 6 and faces the portion of the vehicle where the decorative element is mounted. The thickness of the body 2 is defined as the distance between the outer face 6 and the inner face 8 of the body 2. The body 2 may have any suitable shape, and Figure 1 The shapes shown are given as examples only. The thickness of the body 2 does not have to be constant.

[0028] The guide device 4 extends on the inner face 8 of the body 2 and is arranged to guide the airbag towards the interior of the vehicle during deployment of the airbag, i.e. when the airbag is inflated. The guide device 4 is integral with the body 2, which means that the guide device 4 and the body 2 are produced together as a single part in the same molding cavity, as will be described in more detail below.

[0029] The guide device 4 comprises at least one transverse wall 10 and at least one flap 12 connected to the transverse wall 10 by a hinge 14 .

[0030] The transverse wall 10 protrudes from the inner face 8 of the body 2 in a height direction, which for example substantially corresponds to the direction in which the thickness of the body is measured. In other words, the transverse wall 10 is for example substantially perpendicular to the inner face 8 of the body, as shown in FIG. Figure 4 As shown. The transverse wall 10 extends on the inner side of the body 2, i.e. towards the part of the vehicle on which the decorative element is mounted. When the decorative element is an instrument panel, the transverse wall extends in a transverse direction corresponding to, for example, the width of the vehicle. The height of the transverse wall 10 is defined as the dimension of the transverse wall in the vertical direction, and the thickness "e" of the transverse wall 10 is defined as the dimension of the transverse wall in the longitudinal direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the transverse direction and the height direction. When the decorative element is an instrument panel, the longitudinal direction corresponds, for example, to the front-rear direction of the vehicle.

[0031] like Figure 4 As shown, the thickness e of the transverse wall 10 , at least at its upper end attached to the inner face 8 of the body 2 , is substantially equal to the thickness of the body 2 in the region where the guide means 4 are provided.

[0032] The transverse wall 10 defines at least a portion of an inner volume 16 for receiving the airbag during its deployment. According to the embodiment shown in the figures, the guide device 4 comprises two transverse walls 10 which are spaced apart from each other according to the longitudinal direction and which define between them the inner volume 16. In other words, the transverse walls 10 extend on either side of the inner volume 16 according to the longitudinal direction.

[0033] According to the embodiment shown in the figures, the guide means 4 also comprise at least two longitudinal walls 18 extending along the longitudinal direction between the transverse ends of the transverse wall 10 on either side of the inner volume 16 according to the transverse direction. In other words, the transverse wall 10 and the longitudinal wall 18 together define a housing delimiting the inner volume 16.

[0034] The inner volume 16 is open at the upper ends of the transverse and longitudinal walls through an upper opening 20 delimited by the upper ends of the transverse and longitudinal walls. During deployment of the airbag, the airbag passes through the upper opening 20 towards the vehicle interior.

[0035] The flap 12 is arranged to at least partially close the upper opening 20 in the closed position of the flap 12, such as Figure 1 and Figure 2 In other words, the flap 12 extends in the closed position over at least a portion of the upper opening 20, so that the inner volume 16 is not accessible from the outer face 6 of the body 2. In the closed position, the flap 12 extends continuously with the rest of the body 2, which means that the outer face of the flap 12 is flush with the outer face of the body 2, and the inner face of the flap 12 is flush with the inner face 8 of the body 2, and the thickness of the flap 12 is substantially equal to the thickness of the body 2 around the guide 4.

[0036] The flap 12 is hinged to the transverse wall 10 so as to be movable between a closed position, in which the flap 12 is moved away from the upper opening 20 to release a passage for the passage of the airbag towards the vehicle, and an open position (not shown). Thus, in the open position, the inner volume 16 is placed in communication with the outside of the body 2 so that the inflated airbag passes through the upper opening 20 and extends inside the vehicle. The flap 12 is rotationally movable relative to the transverse wall 10 about a rotation axis extending in the transverse direction between a closed position, in which the flap 12 extends substantially perpendicularly to the transverse wall 10, and an open position, in which the flap 12 extends away from the upper opening on the outside of the body 2.

[0037] The hinge 14 is formed by a flexible web 22 which is attached to the transverse wall 10 at one end 24 thereof and which extends in the flap 12, as will be described in more detail below. At the transition between the transverse wall 10 and the flap 12, the web 22 extends, for example, in a weakened portion 26 of the flap 12, where the thickness of the flap 12 is locally reduced, such as Figure 4 Such weakened portion 26 and web 22 allow the flap 12 to rotate relative to the transverse wall, while the web 22 prevents the flap 12 from detaching from the guide during deployment of the airbag. In other words, the web 22 keeps the flap 12 attached to the transverse wall 10 during displacement of the flap 12 from the closed position and the open position, so that the flap 12 does not fly into the interior of the vehicle under the force exerted on the flap 12 by the inflating airbag.

[0038] According to one embodiment, Figure 4 As shown, the upper opening 20 is closed by two flaps 12 in the closed position. In this case, each flap 12 is connected and hinged to one of the transverse walls 10. In this case, a net 22 extends in the two flaps 12, and the opposite ends of the net 22 are each attached to the corresponding transverse wall 10, so that the net 22 forms two hinges 14 connecting the flaps 12 to the corresponding transverse wall 10. The flaps 12 are connected to each other by a tearable portion 28, which extends, for example, substantially at the center of the upper opening according to the longitudinal direction, as shown in FIG. Figure 4 As shown. The tearable portion 28 is arranged to be torn by the airbag during airbag deployment, so that the flaps 12 are separated from each other and allowed to move independently of each other from the closed position to the open position. Such a tearable portion 28 is, for example, formed by a material portion having a reduced thickness compared to the thickness of the rest of the flap 12. The web 22 may also be weakened in the tearable portion 28 so as to be torn during airbag deployment. The force exerted by the airbag on the flap 12 during airbag deployment causes the tearing of the tearable portion 28.

[0039] The flap 12 may also be connected to the longitudinal wall 18 of the guide device 4. In this case, the connection is also formed by a tearable portion (not shown) which is arranged to be torn due to the deployment of the airbag so that the flap is released from the longitudinal wall to be able to move from the closed position to the open position.

[0040] According to one embodiment, the guide device 4 further comprises at least one screwing shaft 30 for attaching the airbag module to the guide device 4. Such a screwing shaft 30 comprises a threaded opening, which for example extends according to the height direction and is arranged to receive a screw from the airbag module. The screwing shaft 30 is for example arranged in one of the longitudinal walls 18. According to the embodiment shown in the figures, several screwing shafts 30 are provided, for example four screwing shafts 30, each screwing shaft being arranged near a corner of the inner volume, i.e. near the junction between the transverse wall 10 and the longitudinal wall 18.

[0041] According to the invention, the guide device 4 also comprises an overmolded structure 32 overmolded from the material of the body 2 of the decorative element 1, such as Figure 1 , Figure 2 and Figure 4 As shown. The overmolded structure 32 is Figure 3 By overmolding, it is meant that the material forming the body 2 is molded onto the overmolded structure 32, i.e., the overmolded structure 32 is placed in a molding cavity having the shape of the body 2, and the material forming the body is injected into the cavity, onto the overmolded structure 32, as will be described subsequently.

[0042] More specifically, the overmolded structure 32 includes at least one transverse wall portion 34 and a flap portion 36 .

[0043] like Figure 4 As shown, the transverse wall portion 34 extends with the thickness of at least a portion of the transverse wall 10. In other words, the transverse wall portion 34 is embedded in at least a portion of the transverse wall 10, and the material of the body 2 forming the transverse wall 10 extends around the transverse wall portion 34. Therefore, where the transverse wall portion 34 extends, the thickness of the transverse wall 10 is formed by the addition of the thickness of the transverse wall portion 34 and the thickness of the material of the body 2 extending around the transverse wall portion 34. Therefore, the material thickness of the body 2 is reduced compared to the material thickness of the body between the outer face 6 and the inner face 8. Thanks to this reduced thickness, the body 2 can be injection molded without the appearance of indentations on the outer face 6 perpendicular to the transverse wall 10 extending on the inner face 8, as such indentations would occur when the thickness of the injected material is the same between the outer face 6 and the inner face 8 and in the transverse wall 10. According to one embodiment, the thickness of the transverse wall portion 34 is such that the material thickness of the body 2 in the transverse wall is substantially half the material thickness between the outer face 6 and the inner face 8.

[0044] The transverse wall portion 34 extends at least in the upper portion of the transverse wall 10, ie the portion of the transverse wall 10 which is close to and extends upwardly to the inner face 8 of the body 2, as shown in FIG. Figure 4 As shown. When the guide device 4 includes two transverse walls 10, the overmolding structure 32 includes two transverse wall portions 34, each of which extends with the thickness of one of the transverse walls 10. When the guide device 4 also includes a longitudinal wall 18, the overmolding structure 32 also includes a longitudinal wall portion 38 extending with the thickness of the longitudinal wall 18, so as to reduce the material thickness of the body 2 in the longitudinal wall 18 in the same way as the transverse wall 10. When the guide device 4 includes a screw shaft 30, the overmolding structure 32 includes a screw shaft portion 40 extending with the thickness of the screw shaft 30. As shown in Figure 3 As can be seen more specifically in the figure, the overmolded structure 32 can have other portions 42 extending with the thickness of any portion of the body 2 protruding from the inner surface 8 of the body 2 so as to reduce the thickness of the material forming the body 2 in these protruding portions so that the body 2 can be produced without indentations on the outer surface 6 of the body 2 perpendicular to these protruding portions.

[0045] The wing portion 36 of the overmolded structure 34 extends with the thickness of the wing 12, which means that the wing portion 36 is embedded in the material of the body 2 forming the wing 12. Figure 3 As shown, the flap portion 36 is formed, for example, by ribs 44 forming a grid, so that the amount of material of the overmolded structure 32 forming the flap portion 36 is reduced. Figure 3 The grid shape of the ribs 44 shown is given by way of example only, and other shapes are contemplated. More generally, Figure 3 The shape of the overmolded structure 32 shown is given by way of example and other shapes are conceivable, more particularly depending on the protrusion of the body 2 on the inner face 8 , as previously described.

[0046] The mesh 22 is overmolded by the overmolded structure 32, which means that the material forming the overmolded structure 32 is molded onto the mesh 22, so that the mesh 22 is attached to the overmolded structure 32 during the molding of the overmolded structure 32. More specifically, when the guide 4 comprises two transverse walls 10, the ends 24 of the mesh 22 are overmolded by the transverse wall portions 34 of the overmolded structure 32, and the central portion of the mesh 22 extending in the flap 12 is overmolded by the flap portion 36 of the overmolded structure 32, so that the portion of the mesh forming the hinge 14 extends between the overmolded portions of the mesh 22. Thus, overmolding the mesh 22 with the overmolded structure 32 facilitates positioning of the mesh 22 in the guide 4, and more generally in the body 2 of the decorative element 1, since the mesh 22 is held in place by the overmolded structure 32 when the body 2 is molded onto the overmolded structure 32.

[0047] The above-described decorative element 1 is suitable for use when the outer face 6 of the body can be directly seen from the inside of the vehicle, because there are no indentations on the outer face 6 of the body. Likewise, the decorative element 1 is suitable for use when the skin is applied directly to the outer face 6 of the body 2, for example via a heat covering process. In this case, the skin can take the shape of the outer face 6 without showing indentations from the outer face 6 of the body 2.

[0048] A method for producing the trim element 1 will now be described.

[0049] The overmolded structure 32 is first produced in a first molding cavity having the shape of the overmolded structure 32. During this step, the mesh 22 is first placed in the first molding cavity and the material forming the overmolded structure 32 is injected into the first molding cavity, over the mesh 22.

[0050] The overmolded structure 32 is then placed in a second molding cavity having the shape of the main body 2 and the guide device, and the material forming the main body 2 is injected into the second molding cavity, located on the overmolded structure 32. The material forming the overmolded structure 32 is, for example, the same material as the material forming the main body 2, which enhances the attachment of the overmolded structure 32 to the main body 2 thanks to the compatibility of the materials forming the overmolded structure 32 and the main body 2.

[0051] According to a particular embodiment, the first molding cavity and the second molding cavity are part of a single molding tool. In this molding tool, the overmolding structure 32 for the subsequent decorative element 1 can be produced in the first molding cavity, while the decorative element 1 is produced in the second molding cavity with the previously produced overmolding structure 32. When the decorative element 1 is completed, the molding tool is opened, the decorative element 1 is removed from the molding tool, and the overmolding structure 32 produced in the first molding cavity is transferred to the second molding cavity. The net 22 is then placed in the first molding cavity, and the molding tool is closed to produce a new overmolding structure 32 and a new decorative element 1. The decorative element 1 obtained can be used directly as a finished part, or can be transferred to a hot covering station to apply a skin on the outside 6 of the body.
