Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to discontinuous reception in a wireless device, and more particularly, to a method for optimizing power consumption when using multiple DRX configurations in a user equipment. Background Art

[0002] In order to limit power consumption in LTE (Long Term Evolution), 5G or NR (New Radio) telecommunication systems, 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) introduced the DRX (Discontinuous Reception) mode.

[0003] Because downlink data may arrive at any time, the user equipment (UE) needs to continuously monitor the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) to check whether there is available downlink data. This consumes a lot of power.

[0004] DRX enables the UE to reduce power consumption by discontinuously receiving the PDCCH: the UE periodically enters a dormant state during a certain period of time (OFF period), during which it does not monitor the PDCCH, and then wakes up during another period of time (ON period) to monitor the PDCCH to check for possible downlink data. Therefore, DRX enables power consumption to be reduced.

[0005] The UE and the network need to be synchronized to avoid the network trying to send data when the UE is in sleep state. For this purpose, the network configures the UE with a set of DRX parameters, which include "onDurationTimer" and "inactivityTimer" defined in the 3GPP specification TS 38.321. When a DRX cycle starts, the UE remains active for a period of time called the "ON period", which is configured by the "onDurationTimer" parameter. If no PDCCH is received during this period, the UE will enter the DRX sleep state until the next active period arrives. As long as there is activity on the PDCCH during the active period, the UE remains active / activated and keeps monitoring the PDCCH for the period configured by the "inactivityTimer" parameter.

[0006] In some applications, like XR (augmented reality), different traffic flows can be established between the UE and the serving base station, including video stream, audio stream and gesture stream in the uplink direction or downlink direction. The base station can be configured with different overlay DRX configurations to support such different traffic flows.

[0007] Unfortunately, multiple DRX configurations will increase the UE's active time, which in turn leads to higher power consumption.

[0008] Therefore, there is a need for a method that will allow reducing the active time of a UE when a base station is configured with multiple DRX configurations. Summary of the invention

[0009] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a wireless communication method for controlling discontinuous reception by a user equipment connected to a wireless network node, the method comprising:

[0010] - receiving a power saving signal from the network node during a first DRX cycle, wherein the power saving signal includes at least a DRX update parameter,

[0011] - Based on the received updated parameters, adjusting at least one second DRX cycle.

[0012] Thus, the base station may temporarily adjust one or more DRX configurations configured in the user equipment without having to send an entire DRX reconfiguration. Thus, when there is no downlink data pending for the UE, or whenever the data flow characteristics change, the base station may instruct the user equipment to update its DRX configuration to optimize power consumption. It should be noted that such a DRX configuration update is not targeted at the received configured DRX cycle, but at a different DRX cycle.

[0013] According to one embodiment, the first DRX cycle belongs to a first DRX configuration, and the second DRX cycle belongs to a second DRX configuration.

[0014] Such an arrangement makes it possible to adjust a specific DRX configuration based on signaling received during the active period of different DRX configurations. This allows for better responsiveness in reducing power consumption. For example, without such an arrangement mechanism, the base station would need to wait for the active period of a specific DRX configuration before sending a signal instructing the user equipment to skip the next active cycle, which is not conducive to power consumption optimization. Alternatively, the base station can use the first available DRX active time slot to instruct the user equipment to skip the next DRX cycle under a specific DRX configuration. This is particularly advantageous in data streams involving XR, where different DRX configurations may be used to transmit several different data streams.

[0015] According to an embodiment, the DRX update parameters include at least an identifier of the second DRX configuration.

[0016] Hence, the energy saving signal comprises an identifier of one or more DRX configurations that should be adjusted using said discontinuous reception configuration update.

[0017] According to an embodiment, the DRX update parameters comprise at least an instruction for skipping the at least one second DRX cycle.

[0018] Therefore, the base station may instruct the user equipment to skip one or more DRX cycles. For example, when the base station knows that there is no pending downlink data, it may instruct the user equipment not to wake up during one or more upcoming DRX cycles. This enables reduced power consumption because the user equipment will not wake up if there is no downlink data to receive.

[0019] According to an embodiment, the DRX update parameters include at least the number of DRX cycles to be skipped.

[0020] Therefore, it is conceivable that the skip instruction included in the energy saving signal is associated with the number of consecutive DRX cycles that should be skipped. The user equipment may then adjust the DRX cycle by skipping a certain number of DRX cycles as indicated by the base station.

[0021] According to an embodiment, the DRX update parameters include at least instructions for shifting the at least one second DRX cycle.

[0022] As an alternative or in addition to skipping one or more specific cycles, it is contemplated that DRX cycles from a specific DRX configuration may be time shifted. For example, the energy saving signal may include a shift instruction that allows the user equipment to delay or advance the next and upcoming multiple DRX cycles. The user equipment may then adjust the DRX cycle by shifting the specific DRX cycle according to the received instruction.

[0023] According to an embodiment, the DRX update parameters comprise at least a time offset for shifting the at least one DRX cycle.

[0024] Such an arrangement allows the base station to finely adjust the DRX cycle of the user equipment to match the arrival rate of downlink data. Thus, the user equipment can adjust the DRX cycle by shifting a specific DRX cycle according to the time offset received in the DRX update parameters.

[0025] According to the embodiment, the energy saving signal is carried by MAC CE and / or PDCCH.

[0026] Another aspect of the disclosure relates to an apparatus for controlling discontinuous reception in a wireless device connected to a wireless network node, the apparatus comprising a processor coupled to a memory storing computer program instructions, the processor being configured by the instructions to perform the following actions:

[0027] - receiving a power saving signal from the network node during a first DRX cycle, the power saving signal comprising at least a DRX update parameter,

[0028] - Adjusting at least one second DRX cycle based on the received updated parameters.

[0029] According to an embodiment, the apparatus for controlling discontinuous reception is comprised in a user equipment device.

[0030] An aspect of the present disclosure also relates to a wireless system comprising such a user equipment.

[0031] According to an embodiment, the steps of the method described above are determined by computer program instructions.

[0032] Therefore, embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a computer program stored on an information medium, the program being suitable for implementation in a user equipment device or more generally in a computer, the program comprising instructions configured to implement the steps of the method for controlling discontinuous reception in a wireless device as has just been described.

[0033] The program may use any programming language and may be in the form of source code, object code, or an intermediate code between source code and object code, such as a partially compiled form or any other desired form.

[0034] Another aspect envisages a computer-readable information medium comprising computer program instructions for implementing the steps of the above-mentioned method.

[0035] The information medium may be any entity or device capable of storing a program. For example, the medium may include a storage device such as a ROM (e.g., a CD ROM or a microelectronic circuit ROM), a flash memory, or any magnetic recording device (e.g., a hard disk drive).

[0036] Furthermore, the information medium may be a transmissible medium such as an electric or optical signal that may be transmitted via an electrical or optical cable, by radio or by other means.

[0037] Alternatively, the information medium may be an integrated circuit in which the program is embodied, the circuit being adapted to carry out or to be used for carrying out the method in question.

[0038] The advantages of the apparatus, the user equipment, the wireless system, the computer program and the information medium are the same as those presented with respect to the corresponding method of any of the above-mentioned embodiments. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0051] Figure 1An exemplary 5G New Radio (NR) wireless communication system 100 including a user device 101 and a base station 102 in which various aspects of the present disclosure may be practiced is shown. The wireless network 100 may be an LTE network or some other wireless network, such as a 5G or NR network. The wireless network 100 may include one or more base stations 102. Depending on the wireless standard implemented, the base station 102 may be referred to as a BS, NB, eNodeB (or eNB), gNodeB (or gNB), access point, etc. The base station 102 provides radio communication coverage for a specific geographic area called a "cell". The user device 101 may communicate with the base station 102 via radio signals to access a core communication network. The base station 102 may communicate with the user device 101 using a downlink (DL) radio channel and an uplink (UL) radio channel.

[0052] The user device 101 may be referred to as a mobile station, a wireless terminal, etc. In some examples, the user device 101 may be a cellular phone, a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, etc. The user device 101 may also be an IoT (Internet of Things) device like a wireless camera, a smart sensor or smart meter, a vehicle, a global positioning system device, or any other device configured to communicate over a wireless network.

[0053] In the following disclosure, reference will be made to the above reference Figure 1 The user equipment 101 and the base station 102 are described.

[0054] Figure 2 is a diagram of the DRX cycle configuration on a user equipment. Discontinuous Reception (DRX) is a processing mode in a user equipment that aims to reduce power consumption. When using DRX, the user equipment periodically enters an active state to receive downlink data and signaling, and then enters a dormant state to stop monitoring downlink data.

[0055] Figure 2 FIG. 4 shows an exemplary DRX cycle configured in a user equipment, wherein the cycle includes an active time period (ON period) and an inactive time period (OFF period). The DRX cycle is repeated periodically, thereby obtaining Figure 2 There are several ON periods marked as A1, A2 and A3.

[0056] DRX is configured by the base station using RRC (Radio Resource Control) signaling (e.g. RRC Connection Reconfiguration or RRC Connection Setup). DRX parameters may include, among others:

[0057] -drx-onDurationTimer: The time the user device should remain active after waking up (in Figure 2 During this period, the user equipment should monitor the physical downlink channel (eg, PDCCH).

[0058] -drx-inactivityTimer: This parameter corresponds to the delay that the user equipment should remain inactive after being scheduled.

[0059] -drx-SlotOffset defines the start position of the ON period relative to the start of the subframe boundary.

[0060] Once configured by the network, the DRX cycle may be repeated until a new DRX configuration is received. Therefore, the user equipment may be woken up even if there is no data to receive.

[0061] Figure 3 is a flow chart showing main steps of a method performed by a base station for configuring DRX in a user equipment.

[0062] During a first step S300, the base station 102 sends a DRX configuration to the user equipment 101 using an RRC connectionReconfiguration or RRC setup message. The DRX configuration comprises a set of DRX parameters suitable for configuring a DRX cycle for the user equipment 101. According to one embodiment, the DRX configuration comprises a plurality of DRX configurations corresponding to different data flows.

[0063] The method further comprises step S301, during which the base station 102 determines whether there is downlink data available for transmission to the user equipment 101. As an example, the base station may determine whether there is data available for the user equipment 102 by checking a data buffer.

[0064] According to one embodiment, the base station determines whether there is downlink data available for transmission, including predicting whether there will be downlink data that needs to be transmitted in the near future. Such determination can be based on statistical methods using spatial features or temporal features, or by applying a machine learning model to the traffic data stream.

[0065] If the base station 102 determines at step S301 that downlink data transmission will not be required for a period of time because no downlink data is pending so far, or because no downlink data is expected for the user equipment 101, the base station 102 may send an energy saving signal / power saving signal (PSS) to the user equipment during step S302, the transmission of which occurs during an active period of the user equipment.

[0066] According to the embodiment, the energy saving signal is carried by MAC CE and / or PDCCH.

[0067] In a possible embodiment, the energy saving signal may include one or more instructions associated with one or more parameters, thereby allowing the user equipment 101 to adjust at least one DRX active period different from the active period for receiving the PSS by the user equipment.

[0068] According to one embodiment, the parameters may include one or more DRX configuration identifiers indicating which of a plurality of possible DRX configurations should be affected by the PSS parameters.

[0069] According to one embodiment, the instructions may include a skip instruction for skipping one or more DRX active periods. It is contemplated that the skip instruction may be associated in the PSS with a parameter including the number of DRX cycles to skip after the end of the current cycle.

[0070] According to one embodiment, the instructions may include a shift instruction for shifting the DRX cycle. It is envisaged that the shift instruction includes a positive or negative shift offset parameter.

[0071] Figure 4 is a flow chart showing main steps of a method for controlling DRX performed by a user equipment.

[0072] During a first step S400, the user equipment 101 receives the DRX configuration sent by the base station 102 at step S300, and configures one or more DRX cycles. The received DRX configuration may be received in an RRCconnectionReconfiguration or RRC setup message. The DRX configuration includes a set of DRX parameters suitable for the user equipment 101 to configure the DRX cycle. According to one embodiment, the DRX configuration includes multiple DRX configurations corresponding to different data streams.

[0073] At step S401, the user equipment 101 may receive a power saving signal (PSS) transmitted by the base station 102 during an active downlink monitoring period of a specific DRX configuration. According to one embodiment, the received PSS may be received via a MAC CE and / or a PDCCH.

[0074] In a possible embodiment, the received PSS may include one or more instructions associated with one or more parameters, thereby allowing the user equipment 101 to adjust at least one DRX active period different from the active period during which the PSS is received by the user equipment.

[0075] During step S402, the user equipment 101 adjusts the DRX configuration according to the instructions and parameters included in the received PSS.

[0076] According to one embodiment, the instructions received in the PSS include at least a skip instruction for skipping one or more upcoming DRX active periods. It is contemplated that the skip instruction may be associated in the PSS with a parameter including the number of DRX cycles to be skipped after the end of the current cycle.

[0077] Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of a single DRX configuration configured on the user equipment 101 according to an embodiment. Figure 5 A subset of three DRX cycles (n, n+1, n+2) within the DRX configuration is shown, and an exemplary power saving signal received by the user equipment 101 during the active period A1 (ON period) of DRX cycle n. The received PSS includes a "skip" instruction associated with a parameter "1", indicating that the UE should skip a DRX cycle after the current cycle. Figure 5 As shown by the dotted line A2 period on the figure, the ON period A2 of the DRX cycle n+1 after the DRX cycle n in which the PSS is received is skipped accordingly, which means that the user equipment will not enter the active state again until the DRX cycle n+2.

[0078] According to one embodiment, the received power saving signal PSS may include an identifier of the DRX configuration that should be adjusted by the instructions and parameters included in the PSS.

[0079] Figure 6 is a schematic diagram of multiple DRX configurations configured on the user equipment 101 according to an embodiment.

[0080] Figure 6 A first DRX configuration “DRX configuration A” and a second DRX configuration “DRX configuration B” are shown. The actual activity state of the user equipment is shown by “UE DRX state”, which is the result of the superposition of DRX configuration A and DRX configuration B.

[0081] Figure 6Further shown is a power saving signal received during an active period A1 of DRX configuration A. The PSS includes an identifier of DRX configuration B (DRX B), a "skip" instruction, and a skip parameter value of "2", which means that the user equipment 101 should not wake up in the next two DRX cycles under configuration B. Therefore, activities B1 and B2 are skipped under configuration B. As shown in the resulting UE activity state (UE DRX state), the user equipment 101 still wakes up during the DRX cycle from configuration A. After skipping DRX cycles n+1 and n+2, the previous DRX behavior is restored and the UE enters active state B2 during DRX cycle n+3.

[0082] According to one embodiment, the instructions received by the user equipment 101 in the PSS comprise at least a shift instruction for shifting the DRX cycle. It is envisaged that the shift instruction comprises a positive or negative shift offset parameter.

[0083] Figure 7 is a schematic diagram of a single DRX configuration configured on the user equipment 101 according to an embodiment. Figure 7 An energy saving signal received by the user equipment 101 during the active period A1 of the DRX cycle n is shown. The received PSS includes a "shift" instruction and a shift offset "+d1". Upon receiving such a PSS, the user equipment 101 shifts the start of the next DRX cycle (DRX cycle n+1) based on the provided offset. Therefore, the active periods A2, A3 and other subsequent active periods associated with the current DRX configuration are also shifted. The present disclosure also contemplates situations where the provided offset can be a negative offset.

[0084] Figure 8 An example of multiple DRX configurations configured on a user equipment 101 according to an embodiment is shown, wherein a PSS is received during an active period A1 of a first DRX configuration (DRX configuration A). The received PSS includes a "shift" instruction and an offset d2 to be applied to an upcoming DRX cycle of DRX configuration B2. Figure 8 As shown above, upon receiving such a PSS, the user equipment 101 shifts the start of the DRX cycle n+1 based on the received offset "+d2". In other words, a delay of duration d2 is inserted between the end of the DRX cycle n and the start of the DRX cycle n+1. Therefore, all upcoming DRX cycles belonging to DRX configuration B are also shifted / delayed.
