Efficient detection and handling of congestion using fpin-based events in virtual environments

By configuring rate limiting factors based on virtual machine priorities to limit I/O operations in a virtual computing environment, and restoring I/O operations in priority order during congestion clearing, the congestion problem in the virtual computing environment is solved, achieving efficient congestion control and ensuring congestion control for critical tasks, thus realizing efficient and intelligent congestion control.

Abstract

The disclosed embodiments provide methods, systems, and computer program products for implementing intelligent congestion control of data transfer in a Fibre Channel (FC) communication path based on the relative priority of workloads running on individual virtual machines (VMs). In the disclosed embodiments, a host server includes a virtual IO server (VIOS) with N port ID virtualization (NPIV) technology to manage a plurality of VMs; receives a network fabric performance impact notification (FPIN) congestion event notification and sends the FPIN congestion event notification to the VMs, where each of the VMs is configured with a respective throttling factor. The disclosed embodiments throttle IO operations of the VMs based on their priority to implement intelligent congestion control and restore the IO operations of the VMs in order of VM groups based on reverse VM priority when congestion events are cleared.
