Description

INITIATIONThe present invention relates generally to a method of calibrating radio channel probing antennas. In this regard, for general background information, reference is first made in advance to CN 1 17 529 671 A. Further prior art is evident from the document entitled "High Accuracy, Low Cost Secure Ranging with Bluetooth Channel Sound" by NISARGA, B. (Application Note. Texas Instruments, February 2024; https: / / www.ti.com / lit / an / swra791 / swra791.pdf?ts=17223149066046&ref_url=https% 253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F ) and from the article entitled "Bluetooth Channel Sounding - A Step Towards 10-cm Ranging Accuracy for Secure Access, Digital Key, and Proximity Services" by HILLYARD, J.; BACH-MANN, C.; HUANG, L. (Bluetooth Blog, November 30, 2023; https: / / www.bluetooth.com / blog / bluetooth-channel-sounding-a-step-towards-10-cm-ranging-accuracy-for-secure-access-digital-key-and-proximity-services / ).Generally, radio channel probing is a function of low energy communication devices (e.g., Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) devices) to measure and distribute information that can be used to estimate distances between two or more devices. The operating environment 10 includes a first device or vehicle 100 and a second or mobile device 102. The first and second devices 100, 102 may be any devices equipped with or otherwise capable of low energy communication (e.g., Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE)). Thus, in another example, the first device 100 may be a wireless earphone and the second device 102 may be a mobile device. With continued reference to FIG. 1, the first device 100 includes a first or a first low-energy communication device (e.g., a Fahrzeug-Bluetooth® module) 104. The first low-energy communication device 104 includes data processing hardware 106 aand storage hardware 106 bin conjunction with a transmitting / receiving device 107 coupled to a first antenna 108 and a second antenna 109. A first amplifier 110 may also be coupled to or otherwise in communication with the transceiver 107. Likewise, the second device 102 comprises a second or a second low-energy communication device (e.g. a Bluetooth® module) 111. The second low-energy communication device 111 comprises data processing hardware 112 aand storage hardware 112 bin conjunction with a transmitting / receiving device 113 which is coupled to a third antenna 114 and a fourth antenna 115. A second amplifier 116 may also be coupled to or otherwise in communication with the transceiver 113. One or more parameters of the first and second amplifiers 110, 116, such as automatic gain control (AGC), may be controlled to prevent saturation of a transmit and receive chain between the first and second low energy communication devices 104, 111. The network or communication between the low energy communication devices 104, 111 may be referred to as a 2x2 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system or communication system 117. In other examples, communication system 117 may include more or fewer antennas, such that communication is referred to as a 3x3 MIMO system, 4x4 MIMO system, or nxn MIMO system. In the present exemplary configuration, there are four (4) antenna paths (i.e., propagation paths, radio frequency paths, etc.) between the first and second devices 100, 102. With respect to the first antenna 108, a first antenna path 118 exists between the first antenna 108 and the third antenna 114 and a second antenna path 120 exists between the first antenna 108 and the fourth antenna 115. With respect to the second antenna 109, a third antenna path 122 exists between the second antenna 109 and the third antenna 114, and a fourth antenna path 124 exists between the second antenna 109 and the fourth antenna 115. It should be noted that adding additional antennas to the first low-energy communication device 104 and / or the second low-energy communication device 111 may increase the number of antenna paths.Referring to FIG. 2, the communication system 117 (i.e., the low energy communication devices 104, 111) may be configured with a link layer configuration 126 and an interface protocol 128. The link layer design 126 and the interface protocol 128 may further define a radio channel probing method 130 such that the antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124 between the low energy communication devices 104, 111 may be characterized. The data obtained from the radio channel probing method 130 may allow one of the low-energy communication devices 104, 111 to determine the distance to the other of the low-energy communication devices 104, 111. Using the radio channel probing method 130, additional data may be collected, e.g., regarding round trip timing and phase-based ranging. In general, the radio channel probing method 130 consists of events 132, sub-events 134, and steps 136, which may be desirable to define a series of time and frequency slots in order for the low energy communication devices 104, 111 to communicate with each other and exchange radio frequency (RF) signals. In particular, the radio channel probing method 130 is divided into events 132. Events 132 consist of one or more sub-events 134. The sub-events 134 consist of the steps 136 and in particular of two or more steps 136 a, 136 bwhich each begin with a frequency change period 138. Within sub-events 134, first radio channel probing steps 136 aare used to provide calibration information for the remaining steps within that sub-event 134.There are four types of radio channel probing steps, including mode 0, mode 1, mode 2 and mode 3. In general, mode 0 can be used to calibrate the low energy communication devices 104, 111. In particular, according to one aspect, mode 0 may be used to calibrate antennas 108, 109, 114, 115 with respect to frequency and timing. Mode 1 may be used for round trip timing (RTT) packet exchange. Mode 2 may be used for exchanging radio channel probing tones with phase-based ranging to measure phase and amplitude of the communication channel. Mode 3 may be used to exchange both RTT and phase / amplitude measurements. Upon completion of the radio channel probing process 130, the low energy communication devices 104, 111 store the data collected by each radio channel probing step specifically for a given communication channel. Mode 0 steps may reflect local frequency adjustments. Mode 1 and mode 3 steps may measure the arrival and start times. Mode 2 and mode 3 steps may measure phase and magnitude information in the form of I&Q (in-phase and quadrature) measurements.Calibration of the antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124 may be desirable to ensure that radio channel probing is reliable and accurate, but may present challenge with the previous protocol. The previous protocol provides up to three mode 0 steps, which serve only for repetition of interference and not for calibration of the individual antenna paths. In other words, the previous protocol is designed for redundancy and not for calibrating additional antenna paths of the communication system 117. Thus, in accordance with an aspect of the present disclosure, it may be desirable to configure the link layer configuration 126 to have at least one mode 0 step for each antenna path of the communication system 117 to improve the reliability and accuracy of the radio channel probing method 130. In particular, the addition of one or more additional mode 0 steps for each antenna path beyond three paths may allow proper frequency calibration, automatic gain control (AGC) calibration, and round trip timing calibration. Without proper calibration of the antennas, there is the possibility that after completion of the radio channel probing procedure 126, incorrect data may be provided to at least one of the four antennas. To improve accuracy, fewer radio channel probing measurements may be required between the first and second devices, thereby reducing latency and / or power consumption.Referring to FIG. 3, a method 200 for calibrating radio channel probing antennas is provided. At 202, method 200 is initiated. In practice, the method 200 is initiated whenever the communication system 117 (i.e., the first and / or second low energy communication devices 104, 111) uses the link layer configuration 126 and / or the interface protocol 128.At 204, the first and second devices 100, 102 may be configured to detect or otherwise determine when the other device (e.g., the first or second devices 100, 102) is attempting to perform a radio channel probing. Thus, for example, if the second low energy communication device 111 determines that the first low energy communication device 104 is attempting to perform a radio channel probing with the second low energy communication device 111, then the method 200 may proceed to 206.At 206, the first and second low-energy communication devices 104, 111 may determine the number of antennas coupled to or otherwise associated with the first and second low-energy communication devices 104, 111. The number of antenna paths may be determined or otherwise calculated based on the number of antennas coupled to the first and second low energy communication devices 104, 111. As indicated above with respect to FIG. 1, the communication system 117 includes four antenna paths between the first low-energy communication device 104 and the second low-energy communication device 111.At 208, the link layer layout 126 and / or the interface protocol 128 of the first low-energy communication device 104 and the second low-energy communication device 111 are designed in such a way that if the number of antenna paths is greater than three, at least one mode 0 step is assigned to each of the antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124. According to at least one aspect of the present disclosure, the at least one mode 0 step may further include adjusting the frequency and timing of each of the antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124 to improve the reliability and accuracy of communication between the antennas 108, 109, 114, 115. Additionally or alternatively, performing the calibration of the radio channel probing antennas may further include calibrating the transmit / receive chains of the first low energy communication device 104 and the second low energy communication device 111. Performing the calibration of the radio channel probing antennas may include calibrating the frequency, calibrating the automatic gain control, and / or calibrating the round trip timing for each of the antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124. According to at least one aspect, performing antenna calibration for the radio channel probing method may further include automatically calibrating the first amplifier 110 of the first low-energy communication device 104 and the second amplifier 116 of the second low-energy communication device 111. Adjusting the automatic gain control of the amplifiers 110, 116 may be desirable to improve (i.e., reduce saturation) the performance of the transmit and receive chain between the first low energy communication device 104 and the second low energy communication device 111.The link layer configuration 126 and the interface protocol 128 may be stored in the memory hardware 106 bof the first and second low-energy communication devices 104, 111 as instructions that, when executed on the data processing hardware 106 a, cause the data processing hardware 106 ato perform operations according to the radio channel probing method 130.At 210, the radio frequency antenna paths 118, 120, 122, 124 of the antennas 108, 109, 114, 115 are calibrated according to the radio channel probing method 130. In other words, at 210, the antenna calibration for the radio channel probing method 130 is performed at the first low-energy communication device 104 and the second low-energy communication device 111 according to the link layer configuration 126 and the interface protocol 128.At 212, method 200 ends.A number of implementations have been described. It should be understood, however, that various changes may be made.
