Abstract
Description
ENHANCED CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION REPORTINGTechnical Field
[0001] The invention relates to enhanced channel state information (CSI) reporting. Embodiments of the invention provide a client device configured to bundle a plurality of CSI measurements into a bundled CSI report and transmit the bundled CSI report to a network access node. Furthermore, embodiments of the invention also relate to corresponding methods and a computer program. Background
[0002] Different 5G NR features are based on the capability of new radio (NR) to efficiently leverage the radio link diversity in spatial, frequency and time domains. The NR air interface can achieve this thanks to advanced beamforming capabilities, wide and multiple frequency ranges, carrier aggregation / dual connectivity, multi-transmission reception point (TRP) transmission, time / frequency diversity schemes, link adaptation and resource allocation / scheduling, among others.
[0003] To maintain the radio link quality, the gNB will require timely and accurate radio resource measurements (RRMs) and channel state information (CSI) reporting. Reference signals measurements are used for different operations in NR, including cross link interference measurements, uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) precoder selection, beam management, transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states indication and / or selection, modulation coding scheme (MCS) selection and adaptation, bandwidth part switching, uplink power control, phase tracking, among others.
[0004] NR can rely on a very polyvalent CSI reporting framework supporting different CSI quantities, CSI quantity formats, reporting resources, measurement and reporting behaviors in the time domain. This diversity in the NR CSI reporting framework can be justified by the radio channel and interference high volatility, and different traffic type requirements. Consequently, high adaptability is needed.
[0005] The CSI framework in 5G NR supports:
[0006] - Different reporting behaviors, namely periodic, semi-persistent, and aperiodic.
[0007] - Multiple CSI reporting quantities with different formats, e.g., wideband and frequency selective channel quality indicator (CQI) , different types of precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , etc.
[0008] - Multiple options for reference signal mapping and transmission behavior in time domain, i.e., semi-persistent, periodic, and aperiodic.
[0009] - Different options for reporting resource, namely physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) / physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) .
[0010] Aperiodic CSI reporting is currently only supported in PUSCH, although its support in PUCCH was discussed in previous 3GPP releases without reaching an agreement.
[0011] It is worth noting that aperiodic and semi-persistent CSI reporting provide a high degree of flexibility in triggering / activating CSI reporting thanks to their reliance on downlink control information (DCI) , medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) or DCI plus MAC CE dynamic signaling. As dynamic signaling is needed to activate semi-persistent or trigger aperiodic CSI reporting, the network can determine strategies for timing its CSI requests so that it can adapt to changes in the channel and interference properties.
[0012] Summary
[0013] An objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution which mitigates or solves the drawbacks and problems of conventional solutions.
[0014] Another objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution which mitigates or solves problems related to CSI reporting, e.g., problems related to delivery of large volumes of CSI data with relaxed delay constraints.
[0015] The above and further objectives are solved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Further embodiments of the invention can be found in the dependent claims.
[0016] According to a first aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a client device, the client device being configured to:
[0017] bundle a plurality of channel state information, CSI, measurements into a bundled CSI report, wherein each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format; and
[0018] transmit a first CSI report message to a network access node, the first CSI report message indicating the bundled CSI report.
[0019] A plurality of CSI measurements may be understood as two or more CSI measurements. Further, that each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format may be understood as to mean that all CSI measurements among the plurality of CSI measurements have the same first reporting format.
[0020] An advantage of the client device according to the first aspect is that it enables low overhead transmission of large volumes of CSI data, especially in situations where latency is not critical. Furthermore, time series of CSI measurements with finer time granularity than the reporting period can be constructed, which is beneficial for e.g., ML-based CSI prediction at the network access node side. Hence, a more flexible and efficient CSI reporting procedure is also provided.
[0021] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the plurality of CSI measurements are obtained at different time instances.
[0022] This may be understood to mean that the plurality of CSI measurements have been measured at different time instances.
[0023] An advantage with this implementation form is that time series of CSI measurements at finer time granularity than the reporting period can be constructed, which is beneficial for e.g., ML-based CSI prediction at the network access node side. Hence, a more flexible and efficient CSI reporting can be provided.
[0024] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, bundle the plurality of CSI measurements into the bundled CSI report further comprises
[0025] compress the plurality of CSI measurements into the bundled CSI report in the time domain.
[0026] An advantage with this implementation form is that it provides an efficient way of compressing the CSI measurement information and can be implemented using conventional time compression methods or machine learning model based methods. This reduces overhead in the communication system.
[0027] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the client device is further configured to
[0028] receive a configuration message from the network access node, the configuration message indicating a number of CSI measurements to be bundled in the bundled CSI report; and
[0029] bundle the number of CSI measurements into the bundled CSI report.
[0030] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the number of CSI measurements of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and hence increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0031] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the configuration message further indicates a measurement time interval; and the client device further is configured to
[0032] obtain the plurality of CSI measurements during the measurement time interval.
[0033] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the measurement time interval of the CSI measurements of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and channel conditions, and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0034] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the configuration message further indicates periodic CSI measurements, aperiodic CSI measurements or semi-persistent CSI measurements; and the client device further is configured to
[0035] obtain the plurality of CSI measurements according to the configuration message.
[0036] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control timing of CSI measurements in the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting. A bundled CSI report may be constituted from a mix of periodic, aperiodic or semi-persistent measurements.
[0037] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the configuration message further indicates periodic reporting, aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report; and the client device further is configured to
[0038] transmit the first CSI report message according to the configuration message.
[0039] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the reporting procedure of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0040] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the configuration message indicates aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting; and the client device further is configured to
[0041] transmit the first CSI report message upon reception of an activation message from the network access node, the activation message indicating activation of aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report.
[0042] This implementation form also covers the cases when the client device transmits the first CSI report message following a time offset after reception of the activation message. The time offset may be pre-configured in the client device, indicated in the configuration message or dynamic downlink signaling messages to the client device.
[0043] An advantage with this implementation form is that bundled CSI reporting can be activated dynamically so it can be used opportunistically. For example, depending on the scheduled uplink transmission, a client device may be required to drop or omit CSI reports. Dynamic activation enables the network access node to avoid collision between bundled CSI report and other uplink transmissions. The flexibility and robustness of CSI reporting can thereby be increased.
[0044] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the configuration message further indicates radio resources for transmitting the first CSI report message; and wherein the client device further is configured to
[0045] transmit the first CSI report message in the indicated radio resources.
[0046] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the radio resources for transmission of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting based on resource availability and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0047] In an implementation form of a client device according to the first aspect, the client device is further configured to
[0048] form a CSI measurement into a non-bundled CSI report, wherein the CSI measurement has a second reporting format; and
[0049] transmit a second CSI report message to the network access node, the second CSI report message indicating the non-bundled CSI report.
[0050] An advantage with this implementation form is that non-bundled and bundled CSI reporting can be active in parallel, e.g., allowing the same CSI quantity to be reported in two different formats, at different time instances, or some CSI quantities to be reported in the first reporting format while other CSI quantities are reported in the second reporting format.
[0051] According to a second aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a network access node, the network access node being configured to
[0052] receive a first CSI report message from a client device, the first CSI report message indicating a bundled CSI report comprising a plurality of CSI measurements, wherein each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format.
[0053] An advantage of the network access node according to the second aspect is that it enables low overhead transmission of large volumes of CSI data, in situations where latency is not critical. Furthermore, time series of CSI measurements with finer time granularity than the reporting period can be constructed, which is beneficial for e.g., ML-based CSI prediction in the network access node. Hence, a more flexible and efficient CSI reporting is also provided.
[0054] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the plurality of CSI measurements are obtained at different time instances.
[0055] An advantage with this implementation form is that time series of CSI measurements at finer time granularity than the reporting period can be constructing, which is beneficial for e.g., ML-based CSI prediction in the network access node. Hence, a more flexible and efficient CSI reporting can be provided.
[0056] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the plurality of CSI measurements are compressed in the time domain.
[0057] An advantage with this implementation form is that it provides an efficient way of compressing the CSI measurement information and can be implemented using conventional time compression methods or machine learning model based methods. This reduces overhead in the communication system.
[0058] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the network access node is further configured to
[0059] transmit a configuration message to the client device, the configuration message indicating a number of CSI measurements to be bundled in the bundled CSI report.
[0060] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the content of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and hence increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0061] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the configuration message further indicates a measurement time interval for measuring the plurality of CSI measurements.
[0062] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the measurement time interval of the CSI measurements of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and channel conditions, and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0063] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the configuration message further indicates periodic CSI measurements, aperiodic CSI measurements or semi-persistent CSI measurements of the plurality of CSI measurements.
[0064] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control timing of CSI measurements in the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting according to current needs and thereby increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting. A bundled CSI report may be constituted from a mix of periodic, aperiodic or semi-persistent measurements.
[0065] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the configuration message further indicates periodic reporting, aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report.
[0066] This implementation form also covers the cases when the client device transmits the first CSI report message following a time offset after reception of the activation message. The time offset may be pre-configured in the client device or indicated in the configuration message to the client device.
[0067] An advantage with this implementation form is that bundled CSI reporting can be activated dynamically so it can be used opportunistically. For example, depending on the scheduled uplink transmission, a client device may be required to drop or omit CSI reports. Dynamic activation enables the network access node to avoid collision between bundled CSI report and other uplink transmissions. The flexibility and robustness of CSI reporting can thereby be increased.
[0068] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the configuration message indicates aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting; and the network access node further is configured to
[0069] transmit an activation message to the client device, the activation message indicating activation of aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report.
[0070] An advantage with this implementation form is that bundled CSI reporting can be activated dynamically so it can be used opportunistically. For example, depending on PUSCH resources available such that overlap with other uplink signals and dropping of the bundled CSI report can be avoided. The flexibility and robustness of CSI reporting can thereby be increased.
[0071] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the configuration message further indicates radio resources for transmitting the first CSI report message.
[0072] An advantage with this implementation form is that it enables the network access node to control the transmission of the bundled CSI report. The network access node can hence adapt the CSI reporting based on resource availability and hence increase the efficiency of the CSI reporting.
[0073] In an implementation form of a network access node according to the second aspect, the network access node further configured to
[0074] receive a second CSI report message from the client device, the second CSI report message indicating a non-bundled CSI report comprising a CSI measurement having a second reporting format.
[0075] An advantage with this implementation form is that non-bundled and bundled CSI reporting can be active in parallel, e.g., allowing the same CSI quantity to be reported in two different formats, at different time instances, or some CSI quantities to be reported in the first reporting format while other CSI quantities are reported in the second reporting format.

[0097] Specification and enhancement of CSI reporting features has been an integral part of all NR releases so far. The tradeoff between accuracy and overhead motivated many improvements for precoding matrix indicator (PMI) codebooks, targeting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and multi-user (MU) –multiple input multiple output (MIMO) use cases. In NR, different PMI codebooks, such as Type I and Type II, are specified. From an ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) perspective, reduced timeline and support for accurate link adaptation were the focus of the corresponding CSI enhancement work, in Rel-17.
[0098] All CSI feedback features, including quantity formats, computation procedure, omission rules, number of channel measurement resource (CMR) and interference measurement resource (IMR) , etc., were specified considering that the main aim is to obtain as accurate CSI as possible, within the briefest possible timeline and the lowest possible overhead. Another main design principle for CSI features was that CSI reports should be self-contained, i.e., information about a CSI quantity can be fully derived from a single CSI report.
[0099] Moreover, 5G NR is expected to be the first generation of radio access networks that will incorporate extensive use of machine learning (ML) at different levels. In 5G NR Rel-17, the high-level principles, functional framework and use cases definitions for machine learning / artificial intelligence (ML / AI) enabled NG -radio access network (RAN) are addressed. The focus is on higher layer use cases, including load balancing, network energy saving and mobility optimization.
[0100] This work on ML / AI in RAN is expected to continue and to address a wider scope in Rel-18. While the high-level principles and functional frameworks for higher layers are reusable in RAN 1 use cases, at least partially, additional challenges and / or constraints relevant to the physical layer need to be addressed. The consideration of ML / AI at physical layer can be justified by the increasing processing capabilities of the user and network equipment and the ability of ML / AI methods to solve problems that are not easy to solve using the conventional approach.
[0101] ML can be deployed independently at the user equipment (UE) , at the next generation nodeB (gNB) or jointly at both ends. The training of radio resource measurement models, e.g., CSI, beam management (BM) , cross-link interference (CLI) , etc., may be performed over the air or offline, each having their own pros and cons. Regardless, constant data collection will be needed either for inference or for training and inference. Challenges of standardizing ML-based operations in a RAN framework include the often conflicting requirements between ML-based methods and communication key performance indicators (KPIs) , which give rise to multiple tradeoffs, the high complexity and inter-dependence of RAN features, and the necessity to maintain large degrees of freedom in terms of implementation.
[0102] In the framework of CSI and CSI-related features, multiple enhancements were proposed in the ongoing RAN plenary discussion for Rel-18 agenda preparation. Therein the focus is still on the models, methods, functional framework, etc. Practical details relevant for data collection for training and inference are still to be addressed.
[0103] With the advent of standard-supported ML methods at the physical layer, other constraints need to be considered. ML models requires the availability of large volumes of representative, unbiased and relevant radio resource measurement and CSI data. Relying on the current CSI reporting framework, to deliver the needed data may be counterproductive. As the current CSI reporting framework was designed to deliver self-contained CSI reports within the briefest possible delay, it overlooks the requirement of large data transfer which puts emphasize on more relaxed overhead and delay requirement. The delay requirement for training data is not as stringent as that for measurement used in immediate link adaptation.
[0104] Therefore, a solution is hereby disclosed which introduces a bundled CSI report suitable to convey large volumes of CSI data, especially high-resolution time series, using an enhanced CSI reporting framework.

[0112] That the network access node 300 is configured to perform certain actions can in this disclosure be understood to mean that the network access node 300 comprises suitable means, such as e.g., the processor 302 and the transceiver 304, configured to perform said actions.
[0113] With reference to Fig. 3 and 5, the network access node 300 is according to embodiments of the invention configured to receive a first CSI report message 510 from a client device 100. The first CSI report message 510 indicates a bundled CSI report comprising a plurality of CSI measurements, and each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format.
[0114] Fig. 4 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 400 which may be executed in a network access node 300, such as the one shown in Fig. 3. The method 400 comprises receiving 402 a first CSI report message 510 from a client device 100. The first CSI report message 510 indicates a bundled CSI report comprising a plurality of CSI measurements, and each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format.
[0115] Fig. 5 shows a communication system 500 according to an embodiment of the invention. The communication system 500 comprises a client device 100 and a network access node 300 configured to operate in the communication system 500. For simplicity, the communication system 500 shown in Fig. 5 only comprises one client device 100 and one network access node 300. However, the communication system 500 may comprise any number of client devices 100 and any number of network access nodes 300 without deviating from the scope of the invention. The network access node 300 may be is connected to a network NW through a communication interface, allowing the network access node 300 and the client device 100 to communicate with other nodes and devices in the communication system 500.
[0116] The network access node 300 typically have access to superior computational and storage capabilities, compared to the client device 100. Additionally, the network access node 300 controls resource allocation, scheduling, radio resource measurements, etc. While the network access node 300 can also leverage intelligence at the client device side, by facilitating and guiding client device-centric or triggered behavior, the heavy computational strain in terms of e.g., model training and interference optimization are better supported by the network access node 300. Especially, to avoid unnecessary power consumption in the client device 100.
[0117] To perform these tasks, the network access node 300 may collect radio resources measurements data from own measurements and from client device CSI feedback. The quality of the obtained data conditions the achievable performance of the subsequent model training and inference optimization. The process to obtain good quality data includes multiple requirements, mainly, guaranteeing absence of bias, cleanness and representativeness. In addition, the data collection process should handle model / data drifts and guarantee the timeliness of training and inference data, each according to their time scale. If the CSI reporting framework is not optimized to handle large volume of CSI data transfer, it will not be able to fulfill the training and inference data requirements.
[0118] According to embodiments of the invention a bundled CSI report comprising a plurality of CSI measurements is therefore introduced. With the bundled CSI report large volumes of CSI data, especially high-resolution time series, can be conveyed from the client device 100 to the network access node 300. The client device 100 obtains the bundled CSI report by bundling / grouping a plurality of CSI measurements of the same CSI quantity together. With reference to Fig. 5, the client device 100 provides the bundled CSI report to the network access node 300 in a first CSI report message 510. In this way, large volumes of CSI data may be provided to the network access node 300 in an efficient way. The bundled CSI report may be provided in addition to or instead of conventional CSI reporting.
[0119] Fig. 6 shows a signaling diagram for bundled CSI reporting according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0120] In step I in Fig. 6, the client device 100 bundles a plurality of CSI measurements into a bundled CSI report. Each CSI measurement among the plurality of CSI measurements has a first reporting format. The first reporting format may be specific for the bundled CSI report, i.e., different from a reporting format for a non-bundled CSI report. In embodiments, the first reporting format is used for the bundled CSI report and a second reporting format is used for a non-bundled CSI report. Since bundled CSI reports are typically used when latency is not critical and the overall overhead of a bundled report will be reduced thanks to time-domain compression, the network node access node 300 can configure a high accuracy CSI format as the first reporting format. The second reporting format is typically on the other hand used for latency-critical CSI reporting. Consequently, the network access node 300 can configure a low overhead, low complexity format as the second reporting format. The bundled CSI report may further be associated with a single identity (ID) and / or a priority. The priority may be fixed or dependent on a configured priority indicator.
[0121] The plurality of CSI measurements to be bundled may be obtained at different time instances, i.e., measured at different time instances. The client device 100 may obtain the CSI measurements from different reference signals measurements in a conventional way, e.g., by collecting channel measurement resource (CMR) measurements, interference measurement resource (IMR) measurements and / or computed CSI quantity values from different reference signals measurements. The CSI measurements may be of a CSI quantity such as layer 1-received signal received power (L1-RSRP) , layer 1-signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (L1-SINR) , precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , channel quality information (CQI) , etc. The number of CSI measurements to be bundled and the time interval during which the CSI measurements are collected may be autonomously selected by the client device 100, configured by the network access node 300 and / or derived based on specific references and rules. Examples of specific references and rules may e.g., be all CSI measurements realized since receiving an activation command for bundled CSI reporting and / or until a configured offset from the start of the first uplink resource used for bundled CSI reporting.
[0122] In embodiments, the CSI measurements are bundled into the bundled CSI report by compression in the time domain. Step I in Fig. 6 may hence in embodiments comprise the client device 100 compressing the plurality of CSI measurements into the bundled CSI report in the time domain. The compression in the time domain may be performed using e.g., differential quantization, codebook-based compression, and / or dimensionality reduction / regression-based compression. Explicit un-quantized and / or high-resolution quantization CSI may further be used, e.g., when accuracy is more critical than overhead.
[0123] Examples of compression into the first reporting format for two different CSI quantities may be for:
[0124] · frequency-selective (FS) CQI: max-min scaling of wideband CQI + 2 differential bits per subband.
[0125] · L1-RSRP / L1-SINR: max-min scaling of RSRP, 7 bits for max and min quantization + differential over 3 bits for the rest of downlink reference signal resources for which L1- RSRP / L1-SINR is reported (max-min scaling reduces the dynamic range) .
[0126] Table 1 shows an overhead saving calculation for a bundled CSI report with the first reporting format according to these examples compared to non-bundled CSI reports with the second reporting format, where the number of CSI measurements is 10 and the number of subbands is 4. For the frequency selective CQI, the second reporting format is 4 bits for wideband CQI and two differential bits for each subband. The resulting payload is compared to an example bundle report format wherein FS CQI at ten different time instances is compressed via differential quantization with min-max scaling. For L1-RSRP / L1-SINR, the second reporting format, which in this case is the supported format in NR up to at least Rel-17, involves reporting reference resource indicators, seven bits for a reference L1-RSRP / L1-SINR and differential L1-RSRP / L1-SINR over four bits for each of the rest of the downlink reference signal resources. The format used for bundled reporting, in this example, involves min-max scaling (7 bits for each of the scaling coefficients) and differential quantization over three bits for the rest of reference signal resources.

[0129] Table 1
[0130] In step II in Fig. 6, the client device 100 transmits a first CSI report message 510 to a network access node 300, and the first CSI report message 510 indicates the bundled CSI report. The client device 100 may transmit the first CSI report message 510 using L1 signaling such as e.g., uplink control information (UCI) and / or L2 signaling such as e.g., medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) . The client device 100 may use dedicated reporting resources to transmit the first CSI report message 510. The reporting resources may be given by a configured grant or a scheduled uplink grant such as e.g., a dynamic physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) grant.
[0131] In step III in Fig. 6, the network access node 300 receives the first CSI report message 510 indicating the bundled CSI report from the client device 100. From the indicated bundled CSI report, the network access node 300 may obtain the plurality of CSI measurements. In embodiments where the plurality of CSI measurements are compressed in the time domain, the network access node 300 may decompress the bundled CSI report to obtain the plurality of CSI measurements.
[0132] In step IV in Fig. 6, the network access node 300 processes the CSI measurement data obtained from the bundled CSI report. The bundled CSI report provides the network access node 300 with important CSI data which can be used for training and interference optimization. For example, the network access node 300 may use the CSI data received in the bundled CSI report to train physical layer models, optimize link adaptation, refine power control, improve resource allocation, etc. Bundled CSI reports may be used to obtain time series data of CSI quantities with fine granularity in time domain. This data can be used, among other information, by the network to train PMI, CQI, MCS and beam prediction models.
[0133] Fig. 7 shows a signaling diagram for the configuration of bundled CSI reporting according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0134] In step I in Fig. 7, the network access node 300 transmit a configuration message 520 to the client device 100. The configuration message 520 indicates a number of CSI measurements to be bundled in the bundled CSI report. The network access node 300 may transmit the configuration message 520 using radio resource configuration (RRC) signaling, i.e., the configuration message 520 may in embodiments be a RRC message.
[0135] In addition to the number of CSI measurements to be bundled, the configuration message 520 may indicate additional information related to obtaining and reporting of bundled CSI measurements. Related to obtaining of CSI measurements for bundling, the configuration message 520 may further indicate a measurement time interval for measuring the plurality of CSI measurements and / or whether the plurality of CSI measurements are periodic CSI measurements, aperiodic CSI measurements or semi-persistent CSI measurements. Related to reporting of bundled CSI measurements, the configuration message 520 may further indicate periodic reporting, aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report and / or radio resources for transmitting the first CSI report message 510. With the configuration message 520, the network access node 300 may hence control how and when the client device 100 obtains and reports the CSI measurements in the bundled CSI report.
[0136] In step II in Fig. 7, the client device 100 receives the configuration message 520 from the network access node 300. Based on the information indicated in the configuration message 520, the client device 100 may obtain and bundle CSI measurements in step III in Fig. 7, as well as report a bundled CSI report in step IV in Fig. 7.
[0137] Step III in Fig. 7 comprises the client device 100 bundling the number of CSI measurements indicated in the configuration message 520 into the bundled CSI report. In other words, the client device 100 obtains a plurality of CSI measurements corresponding to the indicated number of CSI measurements and bundles them into the bundled CSI report. When the configuration message 520 further indicates a measurement time interval, the client device 100 may obtain the plurality of CSI measurements during the indicated measurement time interval. The measurement time interval may be implemented as a time interval or as a measurement / sample count.
[0138] In embodiments where the configuration message 520 further indicates periodic CSI measurements, aperiodic CSI measurements or semi-persistent CSI measurements, the client device 100 may further obtain the plurality of CSI measurements according to the configuration message 520. The client device 100 may hence obtain the plurality of CSI measurements periodically, aperiodically, or semi-persistently.
[0139] In step IV in Fig. 7, the client device 100 transmit the first CSI report message 510 indicating the bundled CSI report obtained in step III to the network access node 300. The client device 100 may transmit the first CSI report message 510 according to the configuration message 520, i.e., report the bundled CSI report according to reporting information provided by the network access node 300. As described above, the configuration message 520 may indicate periodic reporting, aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report as well as radio resources for transmitting the first CSI report message 510. Any of the reporting procedure may be used together with any of periodic, aperiodic or semi-persistent CSI measurements.
[0140] For periodic reporting, the network access node 300 indicates periodic reporting of the bundled CSI report in the configuration message 520 and the client device 100 transmits the first CSI report message 510 indicating the bundled CSI report periodically, i.e., with a certain time interval.
[0141] For aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting, the network access node 300 indicates aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report in the configuration message 520 and may further trigger or activate the reporting using an activation message 530, indicated with the dashed arrow in Fig. 7. In embodiments, the configuration message 520 transmitted in step I in Fig. 7 may hence indicate aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting and the network access node 300 may further transmit an activation message 530 to the client device 100 when the client device 100 is to transmit the first CSI report message 510. The activation message 530 indicates activation of aperiodic reporting or semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report. In this case, the client device 100 transmits the first CSI report message 510 upon reception of the activation message 530 from the network access node 300. The activation message 530 may be transmitted by the network access node 300 using L1 signaling such as e.g., DCI and / or L2 signaling such as e.g., MAC CE.
[0142] Furthermore, for semi-persistent reporting of the bundled CSI report, the client device 100 may continue to transmit the first CSI report message 510 periodically after activation until the network access node 300 transmits a deactivation message or reconfigures the client device 100 with a new configuration message.
[0143] Independently on whether the first CSI report message 510 is transmitted periodically or based on the activation message 530, the client device 100 may transmit the first CSI report message 510 in radio resources indicated by the network access node 300. When the configuration message 520 indicates radio resources for transmitting the first CSI report message 510, the client device 100 transmits the first CSI report message 510 in the indicated radio resources. The radio resources for reporting may e.g., be configured grant (s) or dynamic PUSCH grant (s) and may be similar to or different from radio resources configured for non-bundled CSI reporting. If more than one uplink resource is configured for bundled CSI reporting, the client device 100 may expect a dynamic indication in DCI or MAC CE indicating which resource (s) to use for a given bundled CSI report, and whether it is periodic, aperiodic or semi-persistent. The received dynamic indication may refer to multiple uplink grants, which can include configured grants. In this case, the client device 100 may be expected to spread the payload of the bundled CSI report between multiple uplink control information (UCIs) . The client device 100 may divide the payload evenly between UCIs or have a different payload in each of the resulting UCIs. Either way each first UCI part may contain a field indicating the bundled CSI report and the order of the UCI in the bundled CSI report.
[0144] From a CSI omission point of view, a bundled CSI report may be subject to relaxed timeline constraints and hence omission rules for bundled CSI reports may differ from conventional CSI omission rules. For example, a bundled CSI report may not be dropped but instead delayed until new resources are indicated or divided between consecutive PUSCH resources, if multiple PUSCH resources for the bundled CSI report was configured or configured and indicated. Which omission rules to apply to bundled CSI reports may be based on specification and / or configuration.
[0145] The bundled CSI reporting according to the invention may be used in parallel with or instead of conventional CSI reporting, i.e., non-bundled CSI reporting. Furthermore, bundled CSI reporting may be configured for all or a subset of configured CSI quantities. In this way, CSI quantities can be reported based on their latency requirement such that e.g., training data can be collected without restricting delay sensitive CSI quantities.
[0146] When used in parallel, the bundled CSI reporting behaviour may be different from the non-bundled CSI reporting behaviour, i.e., the configuration may be different for the two types of reporting. For example, a periodic non-bundled CSI reporting may be configured in parallel with periodic, aperiodic or semi-persistent bundled CSI reporting for one or more CSI reporting quantities and different reporting resources may be used for the two types of reporting. Furthermore, the format may differ such that more than one format is used for a CSI quantity, one format when reporting the CSI quantity in a non-bundled CSI report and another format when reporting the CSI quantity in a bundled CSI report. For example, PMI may be reported with a first codebook type in a bundled CSI report and with a second codebook type in a non-bundled CSI report. This enables both high and low-resolution PMI representation of the same channel conditions to be obtained.
[0147] When non-bundled CSI reporting is performed in parallel with bundled CSI reporting, the client device 100 further forms a single CSI measurement into a non-bundled CSI report. The CSI measurement has a second reporting format. The second reporting format may be different from the first reporting format used for the bundled CSI report. The client device 100 may in this case further transmit a second CSI report message 510′indicating the non-bundled CSI report to the network access node 300, as will be further described below with reference to Fig. 9. The network access node 300 may hence in addition to the second CSI report message 510 receive the second CSI report message 510′from the client device 100. The second CSI report message 510′indicating a non-bundled CSI report comprising a CSI measurement having the second reporting format.
[0148] Figs. 8 and 9 show non-limiting signaling diagrams for periodic bundled CSI reporting and aperiodic or semi-persistent bundled CSI reporting, respectively. The shown signaling flows are only examples and other combinations of the herein described behaviors, parameters and messages are also possible. The examples disclosed in Figs. 8 and 9 are set in a 3GPP communication system context hence the terminology and system architecture references and used. This means that the client device 100 is denoted a UE and the network access node 300 is denoted a gNB. However, embodiments of the invention are not limited thereto.
[0149] Fig. 8 shows periodic bundled CSI reporting according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0150] In step I in Fig. 8, the UE 100 receives a configuration message 520 from the gNB 300 indicating periodic bundled CSI reporting, where the number of CSI measurements to be bundled is two and the reporting periodicity is T. Based on the configuration message 520, the UE 100 performs CSI measurements on downlink-reference signals DL-RSs received from the gNB 300 in steps IIa and IIb. The CSI measurements may be of a CSI quantity such as e.g., PMI and have the first reporting format. The UE 100 then bundles the two CSI measurements into a bundled CSI report and transmits the bundled CSI report using the first CSI report message 510 in step III in Fig. 8. The first CSI report message 510 may be transmitted in radio resources indicated in the configuration message 520 or indicated by the gNB 300 in an uplink grant indication message as previously described.
[0151] With further reference to Fig. 8, the UE 100 then repeats step IIa to III to obtain a new bundled CSI report and transmits another first CSI report message 510 indicating the new bundled CSI report. The other first CSI report message 510 is transmitted the reporting periodicity T after the initial first CSI report message. The UE 100 then continues to repeat the procedure such that a bundled CSI report is reported periodically with the configured reporting periodicity T. The periodic reporting of bundled CSI reports may continue until deactivated, e.g., by the UE 100 being re-configured with another configuration message 520 from the gNB 300.
[0152] Fig. 9 shows aperiodic or semi-persistent bundled CSI reporting according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0153] In step I in Fig. 9, the UE 100 receives a configuration message 520 from the gNB 300 indicating periodic non-bundled CSI reporting supporting aperiodic or semi-persistent bundled CSI reporting. The number of CSI measurements to be bundled is assumed to be two. Based on the configuration message 520, the UE 100 starts to perform periodic non-bundled CSI reporting. The UE 100 hence performs CSI measurements on downlink-reference signals DL-RSs from the gNB 300. The CSI measurements may be of a CSI quantity such as e.g., PMI and have the second reporting format. For each CSI measurement the UE 100 forms a non-bundled CSI report and transmits the non-bundled CSI report using the second CSI report message 510′in step IIa and IIb in Fig. 9, respectively.
[0154] When the UE 100 receives an activation message 530 in step III in Fig. 9, bundled CSI reporting is triggered or activated. The UE 100 obtains a bundled CSI report by performing CSI measurements on downlink-reference signals DL-RSs from the gNB 300 in steps IVa and IVb. The CSI measurements may be of a CSI quantity such as e.g., PMI and have the first reporting format. The UE 100 further bundles the CSI measurements into a bundled CSI report and transmits the bundled CSI report using the first CSI report message 510 in step V in Fig. 9.
[0155] For aperiodic reporting the bundled CSI reporting may be triggered by the activation message 530 and may be performed once. After transmission of the first CSI report message 510 in step V in Fig. 9, the UE 100 may go back to periodic reporting of non-bundled CSI reports according to steps IIa and IIb (not shown in Fig. 9) .
[0156] On the other hand, for semi-persistent reporting the bundled CSI reporting may be activated by the activation message 530 and the UE 100 may continue to perform bundled CSI reporting, as indicated with optional steps VIa to VII in Fig. 9. The UE 100 may continue to perform bundled CSI reporting periodically until the bundled CSI reporting is deactivated. The bundled CSI reporting may be deactivated e.g., with a deactivation message 540 from the gNB 300, as indicated in optional step VII in Fig. 9. The bundled CSI reporting may further be deactivated with another configuration message 520 from the gNB 300 indicating a new CSI reporting configuration.
