[0001] Energy storage for motor vehicles
[0002] Description
[0003] The invention relates to an electrical energy storage device for a motor vehicle and a motor vehicle with an electrical energy storage device.
[0004] Electrical energy storage devices for motor vehicles are well known in the art. For example, WO 2006 / 043163 A1 discloses a battery module that forms a unit for constructing a battery assembly comprising a cell unit having a plurality of cells, a housing, and a cover for receiving the cell unit. The battery module further comprises a shaft element that is inserted into a through-hole provided in the cell unit, a through-hole provided in the housing, and a through-hole provided in the cover. The shaft element has a length that allows it to protrude from both the housing and the cover. Furthermore, during construction of the battery module, the shaft element serves as a template for inserting the cover, the cell unit, and the housing in the named order for each of the modules within the battery assembly.
[0005] The invention is based on the object of creating an improved energy storage device for a motor vehicle.
[0006] The problem is solved by the features of independent claim 1. Advantageous further developments are specified in the dependent claims and the description.
[0007] One aspect of the present disclosure relates to an electrical energy storage device for a motor vehicle, preferably a commercial vehicle (e.g., a truck or bus). The energy storage device has a plurality of (e.g., two, three, or four) battery module groups, each of which has a plurality of battery modules each comprising a plurality of (e.g., clamped together) battery cells (e.g., battery cell stacks). Preferably, the plurality of battery modules per battery module group can be arranged in one plane, particularly preferably in a row next to one another or in a grid. The energy storage device further comprises a plurality of (e.g., two, three, or four) containers that are stacked (e.g., one on top of the other) and each have a substantially frame-shaped container outer wall, wherein one of the plurality of battery module groups is arranged in one of the plurality of containers. The energy storage device further comprises a plurality of fastening elements that are elongated (and, for example,rod-shaped), extend through the outer walls of the several containers and fasten the containers to one another (e.g. gas-tight).
[0008] The long fastening elements running through all containers advantageously enable a modular, freely scalable design of the electrical energy storage system with free geometric design, low weight and cost, as well as simple, quick assembly and disassembly. The modular design of the energy storage system from any number of containers / battery module groups can enable a wide variety of possible uses in various vehicle and customer applications in the commercial vehicle sector (e.g., trucks or buses) or other areas of application. Special tools (e.g., angle screwdrivers) can be avoided. The fastening elements can be easily accessed linearly from above. Compared to screwing adjacent containers alternately, the continuous fastening elements enable a comparatively small number of screw joints, thus reducing costs and weight. The long length of the fasteners enables high robustness against component tolerances, thermal expansion, and other stresses during operation. Due to the long fastener and clamp lengths, bolting forces can be more evenly distributed into the vessel's outer walls and any sealing elements arranged between them. This reduces local stress on the components, increasing their service life.
[0009] Preferably, the plurality of fastening elements can fasten the plurality of containers to one another without clamping the plurality of battery module groups together.
[0010] In one embodiment, the container outer walls are each substantially polygonal frame-shaped or substantially rectangular frame-shaped, and / or the container outer walls are each completely circumferential.
[0011] In a further embodiment, the plurality of fastening elements are each secured within the electrical energy storage device (e.g., in one of the containers or in one of the container outer walls). Preferably, the plurality of fastening elements are each screwed into a blind hole or a through-thread in a base of the electrical energy storage device or the container outer wall of an outermost, preferably lowermost, container of the plurality of containers. This advantageously allows for a particularly secure and protected securing of the fastening elements.
[0012] Alternatively, the plurality of fastening elements can each be secured outside the electrical energy storage device, wherein preferably the plurality of fastening elements each extend through a through-hole in a base of the electrical energy storage device or the outer wall of an outermost, preferably lowermost, container of the plurality of containers and / or are each secured with a nut connection.
[0013] In a further embodiment, the container outer walls each have corner wall regions and substantially straight wall regions arranged therebetween, and a plurality of fastening elements extend through each of the substantially straight wall regions.
[0014] In a further embodiment, the plurality of fastening elements are designed as screws, bolts or threaded rods.
[0015] In a further embodiment, the number of the plurality of fastening elements is > 10, > 15, > 20, > 25, > 30, > 35, or > 40. Alternatively or additionally, the plurality of fastening elements are arranged substantially equidistantly, and / or the plurality of fastening elements together form a grid bar cage that protectively surrounds the battery module groups. Alternatively or additionally, the plurality of fastening elements are arranged in a coordinated manner (e.g., equidistantly or non-equidistantly) to apply a fastening force uniform around a circumference of the frame-shaped container outer walls.
[0016] In a further embodiment, the plurality of fastening elements electrically connect the outer walls of the plurality of containers to one another for potential equalization.
[0017] In a further embodiment, the electrical energy storage device further comprises at least one frame-shaped sealing element, which is preferably arranged between opposite end faces of two adjacent containers of the plurality of containers. Preferably, the plurality of fastening elements can each extend through the at least one frame-shaped sealing element (e.g., through through holes in the sealing element). For example, the frame-shaped sealing element can comprise a metal seal, an elastomer seal, a plastic seal, a sealing cord, and / or a sealing paste or sealing fluid.
[0018] In a further embodiment, the electrical energy storage device further comprises a plurality of, preferably pin-shaped, centering elements that align the containers relative to one another, preferably in alignment. The plurality of centering elements can preferably be arranged on end faces of the outer walls of the containers.
[0019] In a further exemplary embodiment, the plurality of containers each have at least one, preferably strut-shaped or wall-shaped, stiffening element, which preferably extends between opposing inner sides of the outer wall of the respective container and / or is arranged between the plurality of battery modules of the respective battery module group. This advantageously allows additional structurally stiffening components (struts, support plates, crash pads) to absorb forces generated in the event of an accident and protect vulnerable components (e.g., battery modules) from damage. The energy storage device can thus be designed to be particularly safe, ensuring a safe high-voltage battery system even in the event of a fault and during and / or after an accident, minimizing the risk to people and the environment.
[0020] In a further embodiment, the plurality of containers each have a degassing valve for degassing the respective container when a predetermined pressure is exceeded. Preferably, the container outer walls can each have a passage in which the degassing valve of the respective container is arranged.
[0021] In a further embodiment, the plurality of containers each have a temperature control device, preferably on the bottom side, preferably a cooling and / or heating plate, for temperature control of the battery module group arranged in the respective container.
[0022] In a further embodiment, the plurality of containers each have a bottom support plate which supports the battery module group arranged in the respective container and / or stiffens the respective container.
[0023] In a further embodiment, the plurality of containers each have a thermal insulation element that is substantially frame-shaped and arranged between the outer wall of the respective container and the battery module group arranged in the respective container. In a further embodiment, the electrical energy storage device further has a preferably plate-shaped cover that covers an uppermost one of the plurality of containers from above, and optionally an upper thermal insulation layer that is arranged between the cover and the uppermost container. Preferably, the electrical energy storage device can additionally have an upper frame-shaped sealing element, which is preferably arranged between the uppermost container and the upper thermal insulation layer or the cover.
[0024] In a further embodiment, the electrical energy storage device further comprises a preferably plate-shaped base that covers a lowermost of the plurality of containers from below, and optionally a lower thermal insulation layer arranged between the base and the lowermost container. Preferably, the electrical energy storage device can additionally comprise a lower frame-shaped sealing element, which is preferably arranged between the lowermost container and the lower thermal insulation layer or the base.
[0025] A further aspect of the present disclosure relates to a motor vehicle, preferably a commercial vehicle, particularly preferably a truck or bus, comprising an electrical energy storage device as disclosed herein. The electrical energy storage device is preferably arranged on, on, or between a ladder frame of the motor vehicle or on a roof of the motor vehicle.
[0026] The above-described preferred embodiments and features of the invention can be combined with one another as desired. Further details and advantages of the invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. They show:
[0027] Figure 1 is an exploded view of an energy storage device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure; and

The energy storage device 10 can be charged externally, for example, via an electrical charging cable connected to a charging socket of the motor vehicle.
[0031] The energy storage device 10 can be mounted on a vehicle frame or roof of the motor vehicle. Preferably, the energy storage device 10 can be mounted on an outer longitudinal side of one of the main longitudinal members of a vehicle frame of the motor vehicle designed as a ladder frame. Alternatively, the energy storage device 10 can be mounted, for example, between the two main longitudinal members of a vehicle frame of the motor vehicle designed as a ladder frame.
[0032] The energy storage device 10 has a plurality of containers 12, a plurality of battery module groups 14 and a plurality of fastening elements 16.
[0033] The containers 12 each have an outer container wall 18. [0035] Each container outer wall 18 can be limited by the respective two opposite end surfaces as well as the respective inner shell surface and the respective outer shell surface.
[0036] The container outer walls 18 can, for example, be cast, preferably from a metal alloy.
[0037] The containers 12 are stacked, preferably aligned or flush with one another. The containers 12 are preferably stacked by means of the outer container walls 18, particularly preferably at the end faces of the outer container walls 18. The stacking direction of the containers 12 is preferably vertical, i.e., the containers 12 are stacked one on top of the other. Accordingly, there may be, for example, an uppermost and a lowermost container 12. However, any other stacking direction is also possible, e.g., horizontal, etc.
[0038] The containers 12 each accommodate one of the battery module groups 14. The battery module groups 14 can each be arranged or accommodated within the respective outer container wall 18 of the corresponding container 12. [0040] The number of containers 12 and / or battery modules 20 per battery module group 14 can be freely selected to suit the respective requirements. For example, two, three, or four containers 12 can be included. For example, two, three, four, five, or six battery modules 20 can be included per battery module group 14.Particularly preferred combinations have been found to be: four containers 12, each with a battery module group 14 with three battery modules 20 each, wherein the three battery modules 20 are preferably arranged next to one another in a row (see Figures 1 and 2); three containers 12, each with a battery module group 14 with four battery modules 20 each, wherein the four battery modules 20 are preferably arranged in a grid (not separately shown in the figures); and two containers 12, each with a battery module group 14 with six battery modules 20 each, wherein the six battery modules 20 are preferably arranged next to one another in a row or in a grid (not separately shown in the figures).
[0041] An electrical connecting line 22 can electrically connect the battery modules 20 of a battery module group 14. The electrical connecting line 22 can have an electrical connector 24. The electrical connector 24 can be arranged on the outer wall 18 of the respective container 12. Preferably, the electrical connector 24 can be arranged and held on the outer surface of the respective container outer wall 18, e.g., in a through-opening to the inner surface of the respective container outer wall 18.
[0042] The containers 12 may further each have at least one stiffening element 26, a support plate 28, a temperature control device 30, a degassing valve 32 and / or a heat insulating element 34.
[0043] The at least one stiffening element 26 can be designed, for example, as a stiffening wall or a stiffening strut. The at least one stiffening element 26 can stiffen the respective container 12 or the respective container outer wall 18. The at least one stiffening element 26 can extend between opposite sides of an inner circumferential surface of the respective container outer wall 18 or connect them to one another. One stiffening element 26 can be arranged between two adjacent battery modules 20 of a battery module group 14 or spatially separate them from one another. The battery modules 20 and the at least one stiffening element 26 can be arranged alternately.
[0044] The support plate 28 can be arranged at the bottom of the respective container 12. The support plate 28 can stiffen the respective container 12. The support plate 28 can support the battery module group 14 of the respective container 12. The support plate 28 can absorb and dissipate operating loads. An upper side of the support plate 28 can be shaped to accommodate the temperature control device 30. For example, the upper side of the support plate 28 can be shaped for positioning or inserting temperature control coils into the temperature control device 30.
[0045] The temperature control device 30 is preferably designed as a temperature control plate, preferably a cooling and / or heating plate. The temperature control device 30 can, for example, be arranged above or below the battery module group 14 of the respective container 12. The temperature control device is preferably arranged between the support plate 28 and the battery module group 14. The temperature control device 30 can cool and / or heat the respective battery module group 14 during operation. A temperature control fluid can flow through the temperature control device 30 to effect heating or cooling. It is possible for a gap filler, e.g. in the form of a thermally conductive paste, to connect the battery modules 20 to the temperature control device 30 to bridge a gap between the temperature control device 30 and the battery modules 20.
[0046] Connections for supplying and discharging the temperature control fluid can be arranged in the outer wall 18 of the respective container 12, e.g., in at least one passage between an inner surface and an outer surface of the respective container outer wall 18. It is possible for the temperature control device 30 to be elastically mounted or suspended in the respective container 12.
[0047] The temperature control devices 30 from the containers 12 can be connected to one another via a common temperature control fluid inflow line 36 and / or a common temperature control fluid outflow line 38. The line 36 and / or 38 can be arranged outside the containers 12. This advantageously allows for screwing of the line 36 and / or 38 from the outside and / or compensates for manufacturing tolerances and thermal stresses.
[0048] The degassing valve 32 can degas the respective container 12 by opening when a predetermined pressure is exceeded. Preferably, the degassing valve 32 is arranged in a passage between the inner surface and the outer surface of the outer wall 18 of the respective container 12.
[0049] The thermal insulation element 34 can be substantially frame-shaped, preferably polygonal frame-shaped, particularly preferably rectangular frame-shaped. The thermal insulation element 34 can be arranged on an inner surface of the outer wall 18 of the respective container 12. The thermal insulation element 34 can be arranged between the outer wall 18 of the respective container 12 and the battery module group 14 arranged in the respective container 12. The thermal insulation element 34 can surround the battery module group 14.
[0050] The energy storage device 10 can have an (upper) cover 40. The cover 40 can cover the uppermost container 12 from above. The cover 40 can stiffen the uppermost container 12. An upper thermal insulation layer or layer 42 of the energy storage device 10 can be arranged between the cover 40 and the uppermost container 12. The thermal insulation layer 42 can be made of a thermal insulation material. The cover 40 and / or the thermal insulation layer 42 can be plate-shaped. The cover 40 and / or the thermal insulation layer 42 can be polygonal, preferably rectangular. The cover 40 can preferably be fastened to the containers 12 by means of the fastening elements 16 together with the thermal insulation layer 42.
[0051] The energy storage device 10 may have a base 44. The base 44 may cover the bottom container 12 from below. The base 44 may stiffen the bottom container 12. A lower thermal insulation layer or layer 46 of the energy storage device 10 may be arranged between the base 44 and the bottom container 12. The thermal insulation layer 46 may be made of a thermal insulation material. The base 44 and / or the
[0052] The thermal insulation layer 46 may be plate-shaped. The floor 44 and / or the
[0053] The thermal insulation layer 46 can be polygonal, preferably rectangular. The base 44 can be attached to the lowermost container 12 by means of a plurality of fastening elements 48 together with the thermal insulation layer 46. Alternatively, the fastening elements 16 can, for example, attach the base 44 together with the thermal insulation layer 46, e.g., through threaded blind holes in the base 44 or by securing the base 44 to the ends of the fastening elements 16 using nuts.
[0054] The energy storage device 10 can have at least one frame-shaped sealing element 50. The frame-shaped sealing elements 50 can each rest against the end faces of the container outer walls 18. One sealing element 50 can be arranged between two adjacent containers 12, preferably between opposite end faces of the container outer walls 18 of the two adjacent containers 12. Likewise, a frame-shaped sealing element 50 can be arranged between the cover 40 or the thermal insulation layer 42 and the uppermost container 12. Alternatively or additionally, a frame-shaped sealing element 50 can be arranged between the base 44 or the thermal insulation layer 46 and the lowermost container 12. The fastening elements 16 can extend through through holes in the sealing elements 50.
[0055] The energy storage device 10 can be held together by the fastening elements 16, preferably in a gas-tight manner. The fastening elements 16 each extend through the outer container walls 18 of the multiple containers 12 and fasten all stacked containers 12 to one another in a force-fitting manner. The fastening elements 16, together with the sealing elements 52, can ensure a sufficient sealing effect to seal the high-voltage interior of the battery module groups 14 against external environmental influences. The fastening elements 16 can electrically connect all outer container walls 18 to one another to enable potential equalization between the containers 12.
[0056] The fastening elements 16 are elongated and preferably rod-shaped. The fastening elements 16 can preferably be designed as screws, bolts, or threaded rods.
[0057] Specifically, at least the outer container walls 18 of all containers 12 except for an outermost (e.g., the bottommost) container 12 can have through-holes through which the fastening elements 16 can extend. The through-holes can be aligned or flush with each other. The outer container wall 18 of the outermost / bottommost container 12 can either have through-holes for the fastening elements 16. The fastening elements 16 extending through the through-holes can then be secured, for example, by means of nuts or the like, which can be positioned below the bottommost container 12, e.g., on the bottom 44. Alternatively, the fastening elements 16 can, for example, extend through through-holes of the bottommost container 12 and be screwed into blind holes in the bottom 44. The through-holes of the containers 12 can extend between the opposite end faces of the outer container walls 18.Alternatively, the fastening elements 16 can, for example, extend into blind holes in the outer wall 18 of the outermost / lowest container 12 and be screwed therein.
[0058] The number of fastening elements 16 can preferably be > 10, > 15, > 20, > 25, > 30. The fastening elements 16 can be arranged substantially equidistantly. Several of the fastening elements 16 can extend through each of the substantially straight wall regions of the container outer walls 18. The substantially straight wall regions each extend between the corner regions or corners of the container outer walls 18. The fastening elements 16 can jointly form a lattice cage that protectively surrounds the battery module groups 14.
[0059] The length of the fastening elements 16 may depend on the number of containers 12. For example, the length of the fastening elements 16 may range between 170 mm and 500 mm.
[0060] The containers 12 can be centered or positioned relative to one another by means of several centering or positioning elements 52. The centering elements 52 can be designed as pins. The centering elements 52 can be arranged on the end faces of the container outer walls 18. The opposite end wall of the container outer wall 18 of the adjacent container 12 can have corresponding blind holes for receiving the centering elements.
