DEVICES AND METHOD FOR BIOFLUID COLLECTION

[0001] INTRODUCTION

[0002] Diagnostic methods typically involve obtaining and analyzing biofluids from subjects and processing the biofluids for detection and / or quantification of diagnostic analytes, such as biomarkers indicative of diseases. Blood and its derivative biofluids, such as plasma and serum, are commonly used biofluids for diagnostic purposes. Devices and methods for easily collecting biofluids, particularly, pre-selected / desired volumes of biofluids are desired.SUMMARY

[0003] The disclosure provides devices for collecting biofluids, such as blood. In certain aspects, the device disclosed herein comprises a capillary tube fluidically connected to a bulb. The device also comprises a holder through which an operator manipulates the device. The capillary tube comprises a marker, which indicates the level to which a biofluid fills the capillary tube via capillary force when the capillary tube is placed in contact with a biofluid without the application of an outside force, such as vacuum force. In some cases, the holder comprises a substantially flat member and an operator can pick up the device by holding the substantially flat member, for example, between the thumb and the index finger. The bulb can be used to dispense the collected biofluid by application by an operator of a dispensing force, for example, by pinching the bulb. In certain cases, the dimensions of the capillary tube are such that a pre-selected / desired volume of a biofluid is collected when the biofluid fills the capillary tube from the tip of the capillary tube to the marker. In some cases, the marker is a high contrast marker, such as a dark colored marker.

[0004] Methods for collecting biofluids using the collection devices described herein to are also described. In some aspects, the method comprises contacting a biofluid with the open end of the capillary tube thereby allowing the biofluid to fill the capillary tube via capillary action. In some  cases, the biofluid fills the capillary tube till the marker, such as a high contrast marker. In certain such cases, a pre-selected / desired volume of a biofluid is collected in the capillary tube. The methods further comprise applying a dispensing force on the bulb to dispense the collected biofluid. Such dispensing can be done to introduce the biofluid into an analytical device, for example, a lateral flow assay device.

[0019] It is noted that, as used herein and in the appended claims, the singular forms “a” , “an” , and “the” include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. It is further noted that the claims may be drafted to exclude any optional element. As such, this statement is intended to serve as antecedent basis for use of such exclusive terminology as “solely, ” “only” and the like in connection with the recitation of claim elements or use of a “negative” limitation.

[0020] As will be apparent to those of skill in the art upon reading this disclosure, each of the individual embodiments described and illustrated herein has discrete components and features which may be readily separated from or combined with the features of any of the other several embodiments without departing from the scope or spirit of the present devices and  methods. Any recited method can be carried out in the order of events recited or in any other order which is logically possible.

[0021] DEVICES

[0022] As summarized above, aspects of the present disclosure provide devices for collecting biofluids, such as blood.

[0023] Exemplary collection devices are depicted in Figs. 1 and 2.

[0024] An exemplary device (10) disclosed in FIG. 1 comprises a capillary tube (12) fluidically connected to a bulb (14) . The capillary tube (12) comprises an open end (11) and a marker (13) . In FIG. 1, the marker (13) is a high contrast marker, e.g., a dark colored marker. In some cases, the marker can be a notch, an elevated ring or the like, which can be readily visible to an operator.

[0025] In some cases, the marker in the capillary tube indicates the level to which a biofluid fills the capillary tube via capillary force when the capillary tube is placed in contact with a biofluid without the application of an outside force, such as vacuum force. The bulb can be used to dispense the collected biofluid by application by an operator of a dispensing force, for example, by pinching the bulb.

[0026] In certain cases, the dimensions of the capillary tube are such that a pre-selected / desired volume of a biofluid is collected when the biofluid fills the capillary tube from the tip of the capillary tube to the marker. Such pre-selected / desired volume of a biofluid can be 1μl to 200μl, such as 1μl to 150μl, 3μl to 100μl, 4μl to 50μl, 5μl to 45μl, 10μl to 40μl, 15μl to 35 μl,20μl to 30μl, or about 25μl.

[0027] An exemplary device of FIG. 1 also comprises a holder (15) through which an operator manipulates the device. In some cases, the holder is a substantially flat member and an operator can pick up the device by holding the substantially flat member, for example, between the thumb and the index finger. The holder can comprise contours (16) that facilitate manipulation of the device by an operator, for example, by avoiding slipping of the device from the operator’s fingers.

[0028] The bulb (14) allows dispensing of a biofluid collected in the capillary tube. For example, an operator can apply a dispensing force by depressing the bulb.

[0029] The devices described herein could be made from any suitable material, for example, rubber, plastic, and silicone. In some cases, the material is transparent or translucent so that an operator can observe the biofluid collected in the capillary tube.

[0030] METHODS

[0031] Methods for collecting biofluids using the collection devices described herein to are also described. A biofluid can be any desired biofluid and includes blood, serum, plasma, urine, saliva, sweat, tears, phlegm, etc. Additional biofluids that could be collected in using the devices and methods disclosed herein can be readily envisioned by a person of ordinary skill in the art and such embodiments are within the purview of the disclosure.

[0032] In some aspects, the methods comprise contacting a biofluid, such as blood, with the open end (11) of the capillary tube thereby allowing the biofluid to fill the capillary tube (12) via capillary action. In some cases, the biofluid fills the capillary tube till the marker, such as a high contrast marker.

[0033] In certain cases, the methods further comprise applying a dispensing force on the bulb to dispense the collected biofluid. A dispensing force can be applied by an operator by pressing the bulb. Such dispensing can be done to introduce the biofluid into an analytical device, for example, alateral flow assay device. The analytical device can be used to detect and / or quantify an analyte in the biofluid.

[0034] The preceding merely illustrates the principles of the present disclosure. It will be appreciated that those skilled in the art will be able to devise various arrangements which, although not explicitly described or shown herein, embody the principles of the invention and are included within its spirit and scope. Furthermore, all examples and conditional language  recited herein are principally intended to aid the reader in understanding the principles of the invention and the concepts contributed by the inventors to furthering the art and are to be construed as being without limitation to such specifically recited examples and conditions. Moreover, all statements herein reciting principles, aspects, and embodiments of the invention as well as specific examples thereof, are intended to encompass both structural and functional equivalents thereof. Additionally, it is intended that such equivalents include both currently known equivalents and equivalents developed in the future, i.e., any elements developed that perform the same function, regardless of structure. The scope of the present invention, therefore, is not intended to be limited to the exemplary embodiments shown and described herein. Rather, the scope and spirit of present invention is embodied by the appended claims.
