Description

Field of technology

[0001] The invention relates to a door lock having a latch bolt, which can be reversed to be suitable for an installation of the door lock.Prior art

[0002] In door locks provided with a latch bolt it is common that the latch bolt can be reversed in order that the same door lock can be used for a left-hand or a right-hand door. In some solutions, the latch bolt can be pulled some distance out from the hole of the striker plate against a spring force, and then reversed so that the bevelled surface of the latch bolt is turned to the opposite side.

[0003] Some other solutions utilize a screwdriver in order to reverse the latch bolt. In these embodiments the door lock has a hole on one side of the door lock. The screwdriver is pushed through the hole in order to press a clip that keeps the top part of the latch bolt (or the whole latch bolt) in positions where the top part of the latch bolt (or the whole latch bolt) cannot be reversed. When the clip is pressed against the force of the spring keeping the clip in a holding position, the top part of the latch bolt can be pulled out of the hole of the striker plate and then reversed. US 8523249 discloses this kind of solution. Although the current solutions work properly their properties could be improved.Short description

[0004] The object of the invention is to provide an alternative solution. The object is achieved in a way described in the independent claim. Dependent claims illustrate different embodiments of the invention.

[0005] A door lock according to the invention has a lock body, and a latch bolt. The latch bolt comprises a bevelled part and a body part. The lock body comprises a striker plate having a rectangular hole. The latch bolt is through the rectangular hole. The bevelled part comprises an axis, which has a groove. The latch bolt further comprises a pivot plate having a central hole and two projections at opposite sides. The pivot plate is turnably in the groove.

[0006] The body part comprises a front plate having a second central hole. The axis is through the second central hole. The body part further comprises two wall structures in connection with the front plate. There is a space between the wall structures. The both wall structures comprises a first groove on the side towards the space. A part of the axis and the pivot plate are in the space. The body part further comprises a spring in order to keep the projections of the pivot plate in the first grooves.

[0007] The lock body comprises also a side hole, which is located so that it is capable of receiving a pin for turning the pivot plate against the spring by pushing one of the projections in order to move the projections away from the first grooves. When the projections are away from the first grooves, the beveled part is pullable away from the striker plate in order to reverse the beveled part.

[0008] Reversing the latch bolt in an embodiment according to the invention is very easy and secure. There is not a spring that resists the pulling of the top part (the bevelled part) away from the striker plate. The pivot plate also keeps the beveled part in connection with the body part, so the beveled part cannot be separated from the body part and the door lock.List of figures

Description of the invention

[0010] Figure 1 illustrates an example of a door lock 1 according to the invention. Figures 2 - 10, and 12 show an embodiment of the latch bolt according to the invention. Figure 11 shows the door lock according to the invention when the bevelled part of the latch bolt is turned. Figure 13 illustrates an exploded view of the latch bolt embodiment according to the invention.

[0011] A door lock 1 according to the invention has a lock body 2, and a latch bolt 4. The latch bolt comprises a bevelled part 4A and a body part 4B. The lock body comprises a striker plate 3 having a rectangular hole 3A. The latch bolt is through the rectangular hole. As known, the latch bolt is biased outside the lock body by a spring (not shown in the figures), so that the bevelled part 4A is outside the lock body. The bevelled part may move inside the lock body 2 against the force of the spring, for example, when the door is going to be closed, and a door frame hits to the bevelled part 4A. The position of the latch bolt in figure 1 is its normal position. It may also be possible that the latch bolt can be deadlocked, in which case the bevelled part outside the lock body cannot be pushed into the lock body.

[0012] Figure 1 also shows a wedge 7 being through another hole 3B on the striker plate. The wedge is used for some functions of the lock body, which are not relevant for the invention of this text.

[0013] The bevelled part 4A according to the invention comprises an axis 15, which has a groove 19. See figures 4 - 5 and 12 - 13. The latch bolt 4 further comprises a pivot plate 10 having a central hole 20 and two projections 10A, 10B at opposite sides. The pivot plate is turnably in the groove 19.

[0014] The body part 4B of the latch bolt 4 comprises a front plate 4C having a second central hole 16. The axis 15 is through the second central hole 16. The body part further comprises two wall structures 4D, 4E in connection with the front plate 4C. There is a space 8 between the wall structures. The both wall structures 4D, 4E comprises a first groove 12 on the side towards the space 8. A part of the axis 15 and the pivot plate 10 are in the space. The body part 4B further comprises a spring 9 in order to keep the projections 10A, 10B of the pivot plate in the first grooves 12.

[0015] The lock body 2 comprises also a side hole 5, which is located so that it is capable of receiving a pin 6 for turning the pivot plate 10 against the spring by pushing one of the projections 10A, 10B, in order to move the projections away from the first grooves 12. When the projections are away from the first grooves 12, the bevelled part 4A is pullable away from the striker plate 3 in order to reverse the bevelled part.

[0016] As illustrated in figure 1, the pin 6 can be pushed through the side hole 5, in order to reverse the bevelled part 4A of the latch bolt 4. The cross-section area of the latch bolt is rectangular at a not-bevelled section of the bevelled part, matching the rectangular hole 3A of the striker plate.

[0017] In order to describe the latch bolt 4 in more detail figures 2 - 10, and 12 -13 show an embodiment of the latch bolt without the lock body 2. Figures 2 and 3 show how the spring 9 can be arranged to keep the projections 10A, 10B in the first grooves, more precisely the ends 10C, 10D of the projections. The pivot plate 10 (and it's projections) is biased to turn towards the first grooves 12 by the spring 9. The spring can be attached to the body part 4B, for example, utilizing grooves, in which case the body part 4B comprises second grooves 11 wherein the spring 9 is connected, and the spring has a connection part 13. The spring 9 has a plate structure in the embodiment of the figures.

[0018] In figure 4 the spring 9 is illustrated separately from the rest of the latch bolt 4 in order to illustrate the pivot plate 10, the first grooves 12, and the space 8. For the same reason, figures 5, 7, 10, and 12 do not illustrate the spring 9. As can be seen in figure 4, a part of the axis 15, and the pivot plate 10 attached to the axis are in the space 8 between said two wall structures 4D, 4E, which are in connection with the front plate 4C.

[0019] As said, figure 13 illustrates the exploded view of the latch bolt. As can be seen the axis 15 has said groove 19 wherein the pivot plate 10 is turnably connected. The central hole 20 is in the groove 19. In other words, the axis is also through the central hole 20. The axis 15 can be made so that the groove is at the end of the axis and the axis 15 comprises a hole 18 and a screw 17 as illustrated in figure 13. The screw is attached into the hole 18, and the screw keeps the pivot plate 10 in the groove 19. As usually the screw has an enlarged end for a tool recess 17A. Other structures of the axis are also possible.

[0020] Figure 13 shows a secure and strong embodiment to connect the bevelled part 4A and to the body part 4B. In addition to the axis 15 and the second central hole 16, the latch bolt according to the invention can be made so that the front plate 4C comprises a tubular projection 23 towards the bevelled part 4A, in which case the second central hole 16 is through the tubular projection 23. Further, the bevelled part 4A comprises a recess 21 for the tubular projection. The recess 21 comprises a bottom 22 having said axis 15, which is through the second central hole 16. The tubular projection 23 and the recess 21 can be made so that the tubular projection 23 extends through the striker plate 3 of the door lock 1.

[0021] Figures 5 and 6 shows a situation wherein the pin 6 is pushed through the side hole 5 and the pin has pressed the pivot plate 10 to turn so that projections 10A, 10B are away from the first grooves 12. The turned pivot plate has pressed the spring and caused the spring 9 to get more tension. As can be seen the pin 16, more precisely it's end 6A, has pushed one of the projections 10A, 10B of the pivot plate.

[0022] Figures 7 and 8 show a situation wherein the bevelled part 4A has be pulled away from the striker plate 3 of the door lock 1. This can be made when the projections 10A, 10B (more precisely the ends 10C, 10D) of the pivot plate 10 are not in the first grooves, and therefore one side 12B of each first groove 12 does not hinder the pulling of the bevelled part 4A. When the bevelled part 4B has be pulled outside, the pivot plate is near the front plate 4C at the level of the sections 14A, 14B of the wall structures, also near the front plate. In the position of figures 7 and 8 the rectangular hole 3A of the striker plate 3 does not hinder turning of the bevelled part 4A. After pulling the bevelled part the pin 6 can be taken out of the side hole 5. Figures 9 - 11 shows a situation wherein the bevelled part has been turned, but not yet reversed. In figure 12 the bevelled part has been reversed, so the non-bevelled side of the bevelled part 4A is upwards. In figure 12 the bevelled part is also pushed back towards the striker plate and the lock body 2, when the pivot plate 10 is at the level of the first grooves 12, and the tensioned spring 9 has turned the projections 10A, 10B into the first grooves.

[0023] The sides 12B, 12C of the first grooves 12 keep the pivot plate 10 and therefore the bevelled part 4A in place, when the projections are in the first grooves. As the projections 10A, 10B and the first grooves are on opposite sides in relation to the axis 15, the structure is reliable and strong. Further, the ends 10C, 10D of the projections 10A, 10B can have a flat surface, which together with flat bottoms 12A of the first grooves can also provide support and reliability to the structure. In this way the end 10C, 10D of projections have also larger surface.

[0024] It is possible that an area of the front plate 4C is larger than an area of the rectangular hole 3A. This feature can also give more support for the latch bolt and the lock body. The body part cannot protrude through the rectangular hole 3A. The main shape of the front plate 4C can also be rectangular, as in the embodiment of the figures.

[0025] The diameter of the pin is conveniently about 2 mm or less. So, the diameter of the side hole 5 can be 2 mm or less. The inner end the body part 4B may have different shapes in order to connect the body part of the latch bolt to the other parts inside the lock body 2. As can be noticed the invention can be made in many different ways.

[0026] As said, reversing the latch bolt in an embodiment according to the invention is very easy and secure. There is no spring that resists the pulling of the top part away from the striker plate. The pivot plate also keeps the bevelled part in connection with the body part, so the bevelled part cannot be separated from the body part and the door lock. Therefore, when reversing the latch bolt, the top part (the bevelled part) cannot accidentally drop to a ground and to get dirty.

[0027] The structure is also strong since the projections keeping the bevelled part in place are on opposite sides in relation to the axis 15. Further durability can be achieved when the body part has said tubular projection 23, and the bevelled part 4A has said recess 21 for the tubular projection.

[0028] It is evident from the above that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described in this text but can be implemented in many other different embodiments within the scope of the independent claim.
