Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: ANHYDROUS HAIR TREATMENT COMPOSITION COMPRISING A CETYL / ACETYL GLYCERIN COMPOUND SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE
[0001] The present disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions containing isopropylidene glycerol, and methods of treating hair, e.g., conditioning, managing, and improving the look and feel of hair. CONTEXT
[0002] Many people suffer from dry and damaged hair. Dryness and damage can occur due to several factors, including exposure to weather conditions, mechanical treatments (e.g., brushing hair), excessive treatments with chemicals, blow-drying hair, heat styling, etc. In combination, the use of cleansing products that can excessively remove natural oils from the hair, can also not only lead to split ends, dull hair, but also exacerbate dry hair. To mitigate the damage, oil treatments, conditioner, hair masks, and chemical treatments are commonly used.
[0003] The popularity and use of oils for treating dry hair has increased due to their effectiveness and simplicity. Commonly used oils include olive oil, mineral oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, rice bran oil, and coconut oil. However, one problem is that the effects are usually not seen until several hours (e.g., 8 hours) of treatment and multiple treatments are usually required, making the treatment time-consuming and laborious.
[0004] People desire a treatment for hair or damaged hair that is neither time-consuming nor laborious. Various approaches have been developed to condition hair. A common method for providing a conditioning benefit is to use conditioning agents such as cationic surfactants and polymers, high melting point fatty compounds, low melting point oils, silicone compounds, and combinations thereof. Most of these conditioning agents are known to provide various conditioning benefits.
[0005] However, there remains to be provided improved hair manageability, e.g., a Improved hair alignment, reduced unwanted volume (especially reduced frizz), and increased shine. There is also a need to develop hair care products that can provide other benefits at the same time, in addition to treatment and conditioning benefits, such as styling, volume, shaping, curl definition (for curly or wavy hair), and the ability to restyle or reshape (without the need to reapply the product). BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
[0006] An implementation of the present technology is described, by way of example only, with reference to the attached figure:
[0007] [Fig.l] LA [Fig.l] depicts a strand treated with a hair treatment composition according to the present disclosure, strands of hair treated with comparative compositions and a strand of hair serving as a control. SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0008] The present disclosure particularly relates to a substantially anhydrous hair treatment composition, and methods of conditioning, managing, and improving the appearance and feel of hair. The compositions are useful in methods of treating hair, for example, conditioning, softening, and reducing frizz of hair. The compositions are unique because they include a large proportion of fatty compounds other than a fatty alcohol and glycerin ketal / acetal compounds such as isopropylidene glycerol, instead of polyols (such as propylene glycol) and lower monohydric alcohols (such as ethanol). Although they do not require lower monohydric alcohols, the compositions are solubilized, clear (transparent), and free-flowing.The inventors have discovered that glycerin ketal / acetal compounds provide a solubilizing effect to fatty compounds, including fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants. Upon contact with water, the compositions interact with water and form a lamellar phase in situ, which enhances the hydration and conditioning capacity of the composition. Anhydrous compositions typically include: .
[0009] a. one or more glycerin ketal / acetal of Formula (I): Uj... / / (f I
[0010] wherein R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different and are independently selected from hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkenyl, hetero- C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 heteroalkenyl, aryl, heteroaryl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, C3-C6 heterocycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, optionally substituted; or R1 and R2 may together form C3-C6 cycloalkyl, C3-C6 heterocycloalkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl, optionally substituted;

[0012] As mentioned above, the hair treatment compositions do not require lower monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, such as ethanol. Therefore, in various embodiments, the composition is free or essentially free of ethanol. In other embodiments, the composition is free or essentially free of ethanol and isopropanol. In still other embodiments, the composition is free or essentially free of monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
[0013] The hair treatment compositions also do not require glycols having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, such as propylene glycol. Therefore, in various embodiments, the composition is free or essentially free of propylene glycol. In other embodiments, the compositions are free or essentially free of glycols having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
[0014] The composition is generally a solubilized, non-emulsified composition that is transparent or translucent, preferably transparent. Upon application to wet or damp hair, or dilution with water and then application to the hair, the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ to provide deep moisturizing and conditioning benefits to the hair. Additional water may be applied to enhance the formation of the lamellar phase, for example, when the hair is not very wet.
[0015] The glycerin ketal / acetal compounds of formula (I), in various embodiments, have at least one of R 1 and R 2 as a C 1 -C 6 linear, branched or cyclic alkyl. Preferably, R 1 and R 2 are independently a C 1 -C 6 linear alkyl. A preferred glycerin ketal / acetal compound is isopropylidene glycerol.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0023] The hair treatment compositions of the present disclosure are particularly useful for treating hair, for example, for conditioning, managing, and improving the look and feel of the hair. Due to their unique ingredients and properties, the compositions enhance the deposition of conditioning actives such as cationic surfactants and fatty compounds, including fatty alcohol, onto / into the hair to provide moisturizing and conditioning properties. On the other hand, treatment with the composition does not leave the hair feeling "overly greasy" or "weighed down." Thus, the hair treatment composition imparts a natural, soft, shiny, and moisturized feel to the hair while simultaneously improving body, shine, and manageability. The compositions typically include:
[0024] (a) about 5 to about 40% by weight of the one or more ketal / acetal compounds of glycerin of Formula (I): (I) / / OI
[0025] wherein R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different and are independently selected from hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkenyl, C 1 -C 6 heteroalkyl, C 1 -C 6 heteroalkenyl, aryl, heteroaryl, C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl, C 3 -C 6 hetero(C 3 -C 6)cycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, optionally substituted; or R 1 and R 2 may together form C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl, C 3 -C 6 heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl, optionally substituted;
[0026] in which the heteroatoms are chosen from N, O or S; a. about 50 to about 90% by weight of one or more fatty compounds other than fatty alcohols; b. about 1 to about 15% by weight, preferably about 2 to about 15% by weight of one or more fatty alcohols c. about 0.5 to about 12% by weight of one or more cationic surfactants
[0027] the composition being essentially free of ethanol and essentially free propylene glycol and
[0028] all weight percentages being based on the total weight of the composition.
[0029] The composition is generally a solubilized and not an emulsified composition. In various embodiments, the composition is transparent or translucent. When applied directly to wet or damp hair or when diluted with water before application to the hair, the composition preferably forms a lamellar phase. In other embodiments, when applied to wet or damp hair, the composition preferably forms an opaque appearance. When the hair treatment composition is applied and massaged into wet or damp hair, it interacts with water and becomes luscious. Treatment with the composition does not leave the hair feeling “too greasy” or “weighed down.” Furthermore, treatment with the composition does not leave the hair feeling too dry, flat, heavy, and dull. Thus, the hair treatment composition imparts a natural, soft, shiny, and moisturized feel to the hair while simultaneously improving body, shine, and manageability.

[0124] The hair treatment composition is preferably a solubilized, non-emulsified composition until contact with water, after which the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ. In other embodiments, the composition hair treatment process is transparent or translucent. Processes
[0125] The hair treatment compositions of the present disclosure are useful for treating hair, for example, for conditioning, managing, and improving the appearance and feel of hair. In various embodiments, the hair treatment composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition. In other embodiments, the composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition, wherein upon contact with water the composition forms an opaque appearance in situ. In other embodiments, the composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition, wherein upon application to wet or damp hair the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ. A "lamellar phase" generally refers to the organization of long-chain polar head and non-polar tail molecules in a bulk polar liquid (i.e., water) environment, as sheets of bilayers separated by a bulk liquid. The compositions may be applied to wet or damp hair or diluted with water and then applied to the hair and may be massaged into the hair, for example with the hands, and / or distributed through the hair using a comb or brush. This results in smoothing and softening of the hair, which reduces frizz, dryness and unwanted volume. The compositions may remain in the hair or optionally be rinsed from the hair before drying and / or styling. Preferably, the hair treatment compositions are rinsed from the hair after being applied and massaged into the hair.
[0126] The hair treatment compositions, in some embodiments, may be used as a leave-in product. The hair treatment compositions are diluted with water and applied to the hair and left on the hair indefinitely, i.e., the hair composition is not removed or rinsed from the hair prior to drying or styling.
[0127] Methods of treating hair according to the disclosure also include methods according to various routines. For example, the compositions may be mixed with a shampoo (or conditioner) before application to the hair. Alternatively, the composition may be layered on top of (or lathered into) hair to which the shampoo (or conditioner) is already applied. Furthermore, the composition may be applied separately from the shampoo (or conditioner), i.e., to the hair after the shampoo (or conditioner) has been rinsed from the hair. In some cases, it is preferable to treat the hair with a composition of the present disclosure before shampooing, for example, to apply the composition to wet or damp hair before applying the shampoo to the hair. After shampooing, the hair may also be treated (optionally) with a conditioner. Necessary
[0128] The hair compositions of the present disclosure may be incorporated into a kit. For example, the kits may include at least one hair treatment composition according to the present disclosure and one or more additional compositions, e.g., a shampoo, a conditioner, etc. The various compositions are contained separately in the kits. In some cases, the kits include one or more compositions according to the present disclosure and a shampoo which are all contained separately. The kits include one or more compositions according to the present disclosure, a shampoo and a conditioner, which are all contained separately. Instructions, mixing components, brushes, gloves, measuring tools, etc. may also be optionally included in the kits.
[0129] The compositions may be packaged in a variety of different containers, such as, for example, a ready-to-use container. Non-limiting examples of useful packaging include tubes, jars, capsules, unit-dose packages, and bottles, including squeezable tubes and bottles. In some cases, the package is a tube, such as a tube having two compartments, or dual tubes, each forming a separate compartment. Each compartment may include a different composition. For example, one tube or compartment may include a composition according to the present disclosure, and the other tube may include a composition to be used with the composition, e.g., a shampoo, a conditioner, an all-in-one shampoo / conditioner (i.e., a shampoo-conditioner; also referred to as a "co-wash").
[0130] In various embodiments, the compositions of the present disclosure are packaged as a spray product, which allows the user to apply the compositions to the hair by spraying the composition onto the hair. Further, the compositions may be packaged in a spray bottle, which may be a manually operated pump spray bottle or pressure may be applied to the spray bottle such that the compositions are dispensed from a pressurized aerosol container. A propellant may be used to force the composition from the container. Suitable propellants include, but are not limited to, a liquefiable gas or a halogenated propellant. Examples of suitable propellants include dimethyl ether and hydrocarbon propellants such as propane, n-butane, isobutane, CFCs, and CFC-substituted propellants.Propellant gases can be used alone or mixed.
[0131] The methods of treating hair according to the disclosure may vary but Typically include applying a hair treatment composition of the present disclosure to damp or wet hair, allowing the composition to remain on the hair for a sufficient period of time, and rinsing the compositions out of the hair. The composition may be applied to the hair in a sequence with other compositions. For example, the compositions may be applied to the hair before shampooing the hair, after shampooing the hair, before conditioning the hair, and / or after conditioning the hair. However, the compositions do not necessarily have to be used in a sequence.
[0132] The compositions of the present disclosure may remain on the hair for a minimal period of time before being rinsed from the hair, but it is not necessary to leave the composition on the hair. Practically, the compositions may be applied and left on the hair for a period of time that is typical for regular shampooing and / or conditioning. For example, the composition (whether combined with another hair treatment composition such as a shampoo or conditioner) may be applied to the hair and may remain on the hair for a few seconds (1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds) up to about 1, about 2, about 5, about 10, about 15, about 20, about 25 or about 30 minutes.
[0133] The hair treatment composition may be applied to the hair immediately after or before treating the hair with another composition (e.g., shampoo and / or conditioner). For example, the hair treatment compositions may be applied to the hair within 1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 minutes before or after applying shampoo and / or conditioner to the hair.
[0134] The compositions of the present disclosure are unique in their ability to provide hair with improved manageability, long-lasting style, improved frizz control, and softness. Accordingly, the present disclosure relates to methods of treating hair, for example, to improve hair manageability, to provide long-lasting style and frizz control, and to provide smoothness. More specifically, the compositions can be used in methods for conditioning hair, providing curl definition, controlling frizz, improving combability and detangling, and providing smoothness. After rinsing, a strand was set aside to be used as a control. The control sample was simply hung to dry after washing with the standard shampoo. After rinsing the shampoo from the remaining strands of hair, Inventive Compositions A and Comparative Composition C were diluted with water (up to 10 times), applied and massaged into the strands of hair, and left on the hair for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, Inventive Composition A and Comparative Compositions C were rinsed from the strands of hair and the strands of hair were hung to dry. Comparative Composition B was applied directly to a strand of damp hair and massaged into the strand of hair. However, Comparative Composition B was not left on the hair for 10 minutes. Instead, it was immediately rinsed from the strand of hair and the strand of hair was hung to dry.Once all hair strands were dry, they were visually examined for softness, smoothness, alignment, and frizz control (absence of frizz). The hair strand treated with Inventive Composition A was soft and smooth, like the hair strands treated with Comparative Compositions B and C; however, the hair strand treated with Inventive Composition A exhibited the best fiber alignment and frizz control (absence of frizz), beyond that achieved by treatment with Comparative Compositions B, C. All compositions performed better than the control. Images of the hair strands are shown in Figure.
[0161] The terms “comprising”, “having” and “including” are used in their broad and non-limiting sense.
[0162] The terms “a”, “an”, “the” and “the” are understood to include the plural and the singular.
[0163] The compositions and methods of the present invention may comprise, consist of, or consist essentially of the essential elements and limitations of the disclosure described herein, as well as any additional or optional ingredients, components, or limitations described herein or otherwise useful.
[0164] A “composition colorant” is a compound or ingredient that colors the composition but has no appreciable coloring effect on the hair. In other words, the composition colorant is included to impart color to the composition for aesthetic purposes but is not intended to impart coloring properties to the hair. Hair styling gels, for example, can come in a variety of different colors (e.g., light blue, light pink, etc.), but applying the styling gel to the hair does not visibly change the color of the hair. Thus, a composition colorant is different from a hair coloring agent. A composition colorant colors the compositions; a “hair coloring agent” can change the color of the compositions. positions (and often does), but also hair color.
[0165] The term "rinse-off" as used herein indicates that the composition is used in a context where the composition is ultimately rinsed or washed off the treated surface (e.g., skin, hair, or hard surfaces) after or during application of the product. Such rinse-off compositions should be distinguished from "leave-on" compositions. For example, a rinse-off composition is applied to the hair, may remain on the hair for a short period of time (e.g., a few seconds up to about 5, 10, or 15 minutes), and is then rinsed from the hair before styling the hair.
[0166] The compositions described throughout this disclosure may be a "leave-in" composition. A "leave-in" (also referred to as a leave-in) composition refers to a composition that is applied to the skin or hair and is not subject to immediate rinsing and / or washing, for example, for at least 4 hours or for a period of time in the range of 4 hours up to 72 hours, 4 hours up to 48 hours, or 8 hours up to 36 hours, or 8 hours up to 24 hours. In other words, the product is applied to the hair and remains on the hair, as styled, i.e., it is not removed from the hair prior to styling.
[0167] A "lamellar phase" generally refers to the organization of long-chain polar head and non-polar tail molecules in a bulk polar liquid environment (i.e., hair water), as sheets of bilayers separated by bulk liquid.
[0168] The term "non-linear fatty acids" as used in the present disclosure refers to an unsaturated fatty acid and / or branched fatty acids.
[0169] The term "transparent" with respect to a transparent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 80% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. The compositions may have, for example, a transmittance of at least 80%, at least 90%, or at least 95% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. The term "clear" is interchangeable with the term "transparent" for the purposes of this disclosure. A person can typically see through a transparent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or clear plastic bottle containing the composition.
[0170] The term "translucent" with respect to a translucent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, as measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. A person probably cannot see through a translucent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or plastic bottle containing the composition. Instead, the text is usually blurred and difficult if not impossible to read, however movement and structure can normally be identified.
[0171] The term "opaque" in relation to an opaque composition indicates that the composition is not transparent or translucent, i.e., has a transmittance of less than 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, for example as measured using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer.
[0172] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based on the total weight of the compositions of the present disclosure, unless otherwise indicated.
[0173] All ranges and values disclosed herein are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within a range described herein may serve as a minimum or maximum value to derive a subrange, etc. In addition, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of subranges in between. Thus, a range of 1-5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.
[0174] Except in the working examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions are understood to be modified in all circumstances by the term "about", meaning to within + / -5% of the number indicated.
[0175] As used herein, the term "at least one" is interchangeable with "one or more" and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0176] The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein means that at least less than about 5% by weight of a specific material is added to a composition, based on the total weight of the compositions. However, the compositions may include less than about 2% by weight, less than about 1% by weight, less than about 0.5% by weight, less than about 0.1% by weight, less than about 0.01% by weight, or none of the specified material. For example, the compositions of the present disclosure are "essentially anhydrous." Therefore, the composition includes less than about 5% by weight of water. However, the compositions may include less than about 2% by weight, less than about 1% by weight, less than about 0.5% by weight, less than about 0.1% by weight, less than about 0.01% by weight, or no water.
[0177] The term "active ingredient," as used herein with respect to the percentage amount of an ingredient or raw material, refers to 100% of the activity of the ingredient or raw material. All ingredients are re- listed as 100% active ingredient, unless otherwise stated.
[0178] “Cosmetically acceptable” means that the article in question is compatible with a keratin substrate such as skin and hair. For example, a “cosmetically acceptable carrier” means a carrier that is compatible with a keratin substrate such as skin and hair.
[0179] Throughout the disclosure, the phrase "a combination thereof" is used, after a list of elements as shown in the following example where the letters A through F represent the elements: "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F or a combination thereof." The phrase "a combination thereof" does not require that the mixture include all of the elements A, B, C, D, E and F (although all of the elements A, B, C, D, E and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a combination of two or more of the elements A, B, C, D, E and F may be included. In other words, it is similar to the formulation "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and a combination of two or more of A, B, C, D, E and F."
[0180] Similarly, the expression "their salt" also relates to "their salts". Thus, when the disclosure refers to "an element selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, their salt, or a mixture thereof", it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included, or a combination of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included.
[0181] Salts referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not, however, limiting.
[0182] Some of the compounds discussed throughout the disclosure may be present as a salt in the composition or may be added to the composition as a salt (and dissociate in the composition). Thus, all compounds and amounts of compounds refer to both the salt form of the compound and the dissociated form of the compound. In other words, even if the phrase "a salt thereof" is not specifically or expressly stated with respect to ingredients capable of forming salts or available as salts, it is understood that the salt form of the compound is included.
[0183] The expression "inclusive" for a concentration range means that the limits of this range are included in the defined interval.
[0184] “Volatile,” as used herein, means having a flash point less than about 100°C.
[0185] “Non-volatile,” as used herein, means having a flash point greater than about 100°C.
[0186] The term "polymers," as defined herein, includes homopolymers and copolymers formed from at least two different types of monomers.
[0187] The term "INCI" is an abbreviation for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, which is a system of names provided by the Personal Care Products Council's International Nomenclature Committee to describe the ingredients of personal care products.
[0188] In this document, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of intermediate sub-ranges. Thus, a range of 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as sub-ranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.
[0189] All components and elements positively presented in this disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims. In other words, the compositions of the present disclosure may be free or essentially free of all components and elements positively recited throughout this disclosure.
[0190] Some of the various categories of components identified may overlap. In such cases where an overlap may exist and the composition includes both components (or the composition includes more than two overlapping components), an overlapping compound or ingredient does not represent more than one component of the claims. For example, if a polyacrylate falls within the description of a thickening polymer and the description of a film-forming polymer, a single polyacrylate is considered to be solely the thickening polymer or solely the film-forming polymer. A single polyacrylate cannot be simultaneously interpreted as a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer, for example, where the claims disclose both a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer (even though the polyacrylate can function as both a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer). In other words, a single compound or ingredient cannot simultaneously perform the function of two different components of a claim.
