Description
The present disclosure relates to an attachment assembly for attaching an object to a surface of a body. In certain non-limiting examples described herein, the attachment assembly can be used to attach a handle to a surface of a door. During assembly of various complex articles comprising multiple objects, it is often necessary to attach one or more objects to a body. For example, it may be necessary to attach an object such as a handle to a body such as a door. Conventionally, the way in which objects are attached to bodies can often involve various intermediate components. For example, when attaching a door handle to a door leaf, one approach involves providing a bolt through the door leaf and attaching the handle to the bolt using a grub screw. However, grub screws can be difficult to manipulate by the person assembling the door handle due to the small size of the grub screws. Grub screws have a tendency to work loose over time, and can fall out of the handle if they are not securely fastened. Moreover, the presence of grub screws can typically be seen on the handle, which is detrimental to the visual appearance of the handle. Summary In accordance with the invention, there is provided an attachment assembly for attaching an object to a body. The attachment assembly comprises a collar having a threaded external surface and a recess comprising a threaded internal surface, wherein the threaded external surface is threaded in a first direction and the threaded internal surface is threaded in a second direction opposite to the first direction. The attachment assembly further comprises a neck having a bore extending therethrough and a threaded external surface, the threaded external surface of the neck being threaded in the second direction, the neck being configured to be received within the recess of the collar and configured to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface of the recess of the collar. The attachment assembly further comprises a first object having an attachment arrangement comprising a recess having a threaded internal surface threaded in the first direction, the recess being configured to threadingly engage with the threaded external surface of the collar. The attachment assembly comprises a fastener configured to extend through the bore of the neck and to secure the first object to a first surface of the body. The attachment assembly disclosed herein allows the object to be securely attached to the body in an inconspicuous manner, without the use of grub screws. By eliminating the use of grub screws, the attachment assembly can be easily manipulated during assembly and will not work loose over time. As used herein, the term “attachment arrangement” refers to a structure or formation in, or on, an object that allows the object to be coupled to other components of the attachment assembly disclosed herein, and thereby allows the object to be attached to a body. The fastener may be elongate. That is, the length of the fastener may be significantly greater than the width (e.g., diameter) of the fastener. For example, the length of the fastener may be five times greater than the width, ten times greater than the width, or even more. Generally speaking, the fastener is elongate in order that it can pass through the neck and penetrate the body (and, optionally, another object positioned on a reverse surface of the body) to attach the object to the body securely. Optionally, the fastener may comprise a head at a first end thereof, the head arranged to bear upon the neck and thereby urge the neck against the first surface of the body. Optionally, the collar may comprise a formation configured to engage with a tool to facilitate attachment of the collar to the attachment arrangement of the first object. The formation on the collar is easier to manipulate with a tool than a grub screw. Optionally, the attachment assembly may further comprise a first sleeve configured for attachment to the collar or the neck, wherein the first sleeve is configured to overlie at least a portion of the collar and / or the neck when the first sleeve is attached to the collar or the neck. The first sleeve thus conceals the collar and neck, such that the way in which the object is attached to the body cannot readily be discerned. This results in a better visual appearance than other means of attachment that have exposed screw heads or exposed grub screws. Optionally, the neck may comprise a flanged portion having a threaded external surface and the first sleeve may comprise an internal surface threaded in the same direction as the threaded external surface of the flanged portion, so that the first sleeve can be attached to the neck via a threaded engagement. The first sleeve is thus attached to the rest of the attachment assembly without any exposed fasteners. Optionally, a portion of an external surface of the fastener proximate a second end thereof may be threaded. The attachment assembly may further comprising a hole threaded in the same direction as the threaded portion of the external surface of the fastener, the hole being configured to threadingly engage with the threaded portion of the external surface of the fastener. The thread on the hole may, or may not, be preformed. In the latter case, the thread on the hole may be formed by a self-tapping fastener. Optionally, the hole may be disposed within the body to which the first object is to be attached. In this manner, the object can be attached to a surface of the object without requiring access to the rear of the surface, and without the use of exposed fasteners or grub screws. Optionally, the attachment assembly may further comprise a second object for attachment to a second surface of the body, wherein the second surface is a reverse surface with respect to the first surface of the body, and the second object has an attachment arrangement comprising the hole. In this manner, a respective object can be attached to each of two oppositely-oriented surfaces of a body without the use of exposed fasteners or grub screws. Optionally, the attachment assembly may further comprise a second sleeve, wherein the second sleeve is configured to overlie the attachment arrangement of the second object when the second object is attached to the body. The second sleeve thus conceals the interface between the second surface and the attachment arrangement of the second object. The second sleeve may have the same appearance as a first sleeve that conceals the collar and neck, such that the attachment assembly has the same appearance when viewed from either surface of the body. Optionally, the second sleeve may have a cavity to receive the attachment arrangement of the second object. The second sleeve may have a base configured to abut the second surface of the body, the base having a through hole configured to receive the fastener. Optionally, the body may be a door leaf, the first object may be a first door handle and the second object may be a second door handle. The attachment assembly is particularly well-suited to attaching door handles to a door leaf without the use of grub screws or exposed fasteners. Optionally, the first door handle and the second door handle may each comprise a plurality of respective attachment arrangements. The attachment assembly disclosed herein is particularly well-suited to attaching door handles, such as bar handles, that have two or more points of attachment to a door leaf. This is because the attachment assembly allows a screw fitting between the handle(s) and the door leaf without requiring the handle(s) to rotate relative to the door leaf. The attachment assembly may be supplied as a kit of parts. The fastener need not be included in such a kit of parts. Detailed Description The present disclosure relates to an attachment assembly for attaching an object to a surface of a body. Specific embodiments described herein relate to door handle assemblies whereby a first door handle is attached to one side of a door leaf and a second door handle is attached to the other side of the door leaf. However, alternative embodiments allow for the attachment of a single handle to a door leaf or another body or surface thereof. For example, the attachment assembly disclosed herein can be used to attach a handle to a window, a drawer, a wardrobe, a cupboard and so forth. However, it should be understood that the invention includes embodiments where any rigid object may be attached to the surface of another rigid object. Other example uses of the attachment assembly include attaching a bar shower, a curtain pole or a coat hook to a wall. Further uses of the attachment assembly will become apparent to the skilled person upon reading the following disclosure. Figure 1A is an exploded isometric view of a door handle assembly 10 comprising an attachment assembly in accordance with the invention. Figure 1B is a cross-sectional view of a portion of the door handle assembly 10 in its assembled state, through the line X-X shown in Figure 1A. In more detail, Figure 1B shows a single attachment arrangement of the door handle assembly 10, and the jagged lines in Figure 1B indicate regions of the door handle assembly 10 that have been omitted for the sake of visual clarity. The door handle assembly 10 comprises a first door handle 1, a second door handle 2, a neck 3, a collar 4, a first sleeve 5, a second sleeve 6, and a fastener 8. The door handle assembly 10 shown in Figures 1A and 1B is a two-handled door assembly where a door handle is attached to each side of a door leaf 7. The first door handle 1 and second door handle 2 are bar handles, in which each door handle 1, 2 has two points of attachment to the door leaf 7. It will be appreciated that the door handles 1, 2 need not necessarily be bar handles, and either or both of the door handles 1, 2 could have a different shape from that shown in Figures 1A and 1B. It is expressly contemplated that the attachment assembly disclosed herein can be used to attach an object, such as a door knob, that has just a single point of attachment to a body. However, the attachment assembly disclosed herein is particularly well-suited to attaching an object, such as a bar handle, that has two or more points of attachment to a body. This is because the attachment assembly allows a screw fitting between the object and the body, without requiring the object to rotate relative to the body (which would not be possible if the object were to be attached to the body at two or more points of attachment). In the example shown in Figures 1A and 1B, the fastener 8 is a bolt, but in other examples the fastener 8 may be a screw or any other suitable type of fastener. In general, the fastener 8 is elongate and has a shank and a head. The shank may have an external screw thread along some or all of its length. The head has a greater diameter than the shank. The head may comprise an indentation with which a screwdriver or hex key can engage to facilitate turning of the fastener 8. Figure 2A shows two perspective views of the collar 4, illustrating the collar 4 from different viewpoints. Figure 2B is a side view of the collar 4. Figure 2C is a cross-sectional view of the collar 4 through the line C-C shown in Figure 2B. The collar 4 takes the form of a substantially cylindrical nut comprising a recess 40 (or bore) having a threaded internal surface 44. The collar 4 also has a threaded external surface 42. The threaded internal surface 44 is threaded in a first direction and the threaded external surface 42 is threaded in a second direction opposite to the first direction. For example, the threaded internal surface 44 may have a right-handed thread and the threaded external surface 42 may have a left-handed thread, or vice versa. The collar 4 comprises a formation 46 that is configured to engage with a tool during installation and / or removal of the first door handle 1. In the example shown in Figure 2, the formation 46 comprises two flattened portions on the external surface of the collar 4, which can be gripped by a gripping tool (such as a wrench) to rotate the collar 4 into engagement with an attachment arrangement 14 of the first handle 1. In other examples, the formation 46 may have a different number of flattened portions. In yet other examples, the formation 46 may be a flange that extends radially outwards from the external surface 42 of the collar 4; and the flange may, or may not, comprise one or more flattened portions as previously described. In further examples, the formation 46 may comprise one or more holes in the external surface 42 of the collar 4, into which a tommy bar can be inserted to rotate the collar 4. Figure 3A shows two perspective views of the neck 3, illustrating the neck 3 from different viewpoints. Figure 3B is a side view of the neck 3. Figure 3C is a cross-sectional view of the neck 3 through the line D-D shown in Figure 3B. The neck 3 is generally cylindrical in shape and comprises a flanged portion 32 at one end thereof. A bore 30 extends lengthwise through the neck 3 (i.e., along the axis of the neck 3). The bore 30 may be unthreaded. The bore 30 is configured to allow the fastener 8 to pass therethrough. The bore 30 may be further configured so that the fastener 8 can fit snugly within the bore 30. For example, the bore 30 may be dimensioned such that there is a clearance fit between the bore 30 and the fastener 8. The external surface 34 of the non-flanged portion of the neck 3 is threaded in the same direction as the threaded internal surface of the collar 4 so that the neck 3 and the collar 4 can threadingly engage with each other. The flanged portion 32 is dimensioned to fit snugly within a recess 50 of the first sleeve 5. The external surface 36 of the flanged portion 32 may be threaded to threadingly engage with a threaded internal surface 52 of the first sleeve 5. The recess 40 of the collar 4 and the non-flanged portion of the neck 3 are dimensioned so that the non-flanged portion of the neck 3 can fit snugly inside the recess 40 of the collar 4. The threaded external surface 34 of the neck 3 can threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface 44 of the recess 40 when the neck 3 is inserted into the recess 40 of the collar 4. Figure 4A shows a front view of the first handle 1 of the door handle assembly 10. Figure 4B shows a cross-sectional view of the first door handle 1 through the line A-A in Figure 4A. The first handle 1 has a main portion 12, which comprises first and second attachment arrangements 14. In the example shown, the main portion 12 of the first handle 1 has an elongate cylindrical shape, but it will be appreciated that other shapes may be chosen for aesthetic reasons. Similarly, in the example shown the first and second attachment arrangements 14 are in the form of cylindrical shanks that extend from the main portion 12, but could have alternative shapes for aesthetic reasons. As may be seen in Figure 4B, the first and second attachment arrangements 14 each comprise a recess 16 configured to receive a respective collar 4. The recess 16 of each attachment arrangement 14 has an internal surface 18 threaded in the same direction as the threaded external surface 42 of the collar 4. The collar 4 is dimensioned to fit snugly inside the recess 16 of an attachment arrangement 14 of the first handle 1 and to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface 18 of the recess 16 when the collar 4 is inserted into the recess 16. Figure 5A is a front view of a second door handle 2. Figure 5B shows a cross-sectional view of the second door handle 2 through the line B-B in Figure 5A. The structure of the second door handle 2 is substantially similar to the structure of the first door handle 1. Indeed, in its assembled state the external appearance of the second door handle 2 may be indistinguishable from that of the first door handle 1. The second door handle 2 has a main portion 22 and first and second attachment arrangements 24. The structure of the second door handle 2 differs from that of the first door handle 1 in that the respective attachment arrangements 24 of the second door handle 2 each comprise a blind hole 26 for receiving an end of the fastener 8. The holes 26 of the second door handle 2 have a threaded internal surface 28. At least a portion of the external surface of the fastener 8 may be threaded in the same direction as the threaded internal surface 28 of the recess 26 of the second door handle 2. As the fastener 8 is inserted into an attachment arrangement 24 of the second handle 2, the fastener 8 is snugly received inside the hole 26 and threadingly engages with the threaded internal surface 28 of the hole 26. The holes 26 of the second door handle 2 have a smaller diameter than the recesses 16 of the first door handle 1, since the former accommodate only the fastener 8, whereas the latter accommodate the neck 3 and the collar 4 in addition to the fastener 8. However, the external shape and dimensions of the respective attachment arrangements 14, 24 of each door handle 1, 2 can be the same, such the external appearances of the two door handles are indistinguishable after installation. Figure 6A shows two perspective views of a first sleeve 5, illustrating the first sleeve 5 from different viewpoints. In general, the first sleeve 5 is formed as an annulus. In the example shown in the drawings, the external surface of the first sleeve 5 is tapered, but this is not essential. The first sleeve 5 is dimensioned to fit over the neck 3 and the collar 4 when the door handle assembly 10 has been assembled. The first sleeve 5 is also dimensioned to fit over at least a portion of the attachment arrangement 14 when the door handle assembly 10 has been assembled. In this manner, the first sleeve 5 conceals the connection between the neck 3, collar 4 and attachment arrangement 14. Figure 6B is a side view of the first sleeve 5. Figure 6C is a cross-sectional view of the first sleeve 5 through the line E-E shown in Figure 6B. The first sleeve 5 has an internal cavity 50, at least a portion of which has a threaded internal surface 52. The cavity 50 is configured to receive the neck 3, and its threaded internal surface 52 is configured to threadingly engage with the threaded external surface 36 of the flanged portion 32of the neck 3. The threaded internal surface 52 of the first sleeve 5 is threaded in the same direction as the threaded external surface 36 of the flanged portion 32 of the neck 3. When the neck 3 is inserted into the cavity 50 of the first sleeve 5, the flanged portion 32 of the of the neck 3 fits snugly into the cavity 50 and the threaded external surface 36 of the flanged portion 32 threadingly engages with the threaded internal surface 52 of the cavity 50. In the example shown, not all of the internal surface 52 of the cavity 50 is threaded. That is, the internal surface 52 of the cavity 50 is threaded at a first end 54 and is not threaded a second end 56, where the first end 54 is closest to the door leaf 7 when the door handle assembly 10 has been assembled. The cavity 50 is configured to receive an attachment arrangement 14 of the first handle 1 at its second end 56, but the attachment arrangement 14 is not directly fastened to the first sleeve 50. Figure 7A shows a side-view of a second sleeve 6 of the door handle assembly 10. Figure 7B shows a cross-sectional view through the line F-F shown in Figure 7A. The external form of the second sleeve 6 is similar to that of the first sleeve 5. One end of the second sleeve 6 comprises a base 64 in the form of an inward flange. The base 64 has a through hole 62 configured to receive the fastener 8 therethrough. The second sleeve 6 also comprises a cavity 60 to receive an attachment arrangement 24 of the second handle 2. Referring again to Figures 1A and 1B, a method of assembling the two-handled door assembly 10 will now be explained. As mentioned above, each handle 1, 2 has two attachment arrangements 14, 24 but, for the sake of brevity, the operations involved in assembling only one of each handle’s attachment arrangements is discussed in detail below. The door leaf 7 has a through hole 72 into which the fastener 8 may be inserted. On a first side 74 of the door leaf 7, the neck 3 is placed abutting the door leaf 7 so that the bore 30 of the neck 3 is coaxial with respect to the through hole 72 in the door leaf 7. The fastener 8 is inserted through the bore 30 of the neck 3 and the through hole 72 of the door leaf 7. The distal end of the fastener 8 (i.e. the end of the fastener 8 on the right hand side of Figure 1B and proximate the second handle 2) protrudes from a second (reverse) side 76 of the door leaf 7. On the second side 76 of the door leaf 7, the protruding distal end of the fastener 8 is first passed through the through hole 62 of the second sleeve 6, and then inserted into the attachment arrangement 24 of the second door handle 2. The fastener 8 is then tightened, which urges the neck 3 against the first side 74 of the door leaf 7. Tightening of the fastener 8 also causes the fastener 8 to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface 28 of the second door handle 2, which draws the second door handle 2 towards the second side 76 of the door leaf 7. This, in turn, urges the base 64 of the second sleeve 6 against the second side 76 of the door leaf 7. As can be seen in Figure 1B, the base 6A of the second sleeve 6 abuts against the door leaf 7. When the fastener 8 is fully tightened, installation of the second door handle 2 is complete. To install the first door handle 1, the attachment arrangement 14 of the first door handle 1 is inserted into the cavity 50 of the first sleeve 5. The collar 4 is then attached to the neck 3 by screwing the threaded internal surface 44 of the recess 50 of the collar 4 onto the threaded external surface 34 of the unflanged portion of the neck 3. When the internal thread of the collar 4 has begun to engage with the external thread of the neck 3, the end of the collar 4 distal from the neck 3 is inserted into the recess 16 of the attachment arrangement 14 of the first door handle 1. The collar 4 is then tightened (in other words, screwed further onto the neck 3). Tightening of the collar 4 also causes the threaded external surface 42 of the collar 4 to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface 18 of the recess 16 of the first handle 1. As explained above, the external surface 42 of the collar 4 is threaded in a direction opposite to the direction in which the internal surface 44 of the collar 4 is threaded. Thus, when the collar 4 is tightened, the screw threads cooperate to cause the collar 4 to advance into the recess 16 of the first handle 1 at the same time as the non-flanged portion of the neck 3 advances into the recess 40 of the collar 4. Tightening of the collar 4 is faciltated by engaging a suitable tool (such as a wrench) with the formation 46. Continued tightening of the collar 4 causes the first handle 1 and the collar 4 to be drawn towards the first side 74 of the door leaf until the first handle 1, collar 4 and neck 3 are securely fastened to one another. The first sleeve 5 is then pushed onto the flanged portion 32 of the neck 3, and screwed to cause that the threaded external surface 36 of the neck 3 to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface 52 of the first sleeve 5. When the first sleeve 5 is tightly fastened to the neck 3, installation of the first door handle 1 is complete. The door handle assembly 10 can be removed by performing the operations of the assembly method in reverse order. As can be seen in Figure 1A, the first door handle 1 and second door handle 2 are attached to the door leaf 7 at two attachment points. As will be clear to the person skilled in the art, any number of attachment points may be provided. For example, a planar door handle may be provided having one or more attachment points. Advantageously, a plurality of attachment points are provided to provide for robust attachment of the door handle to the door. Furthermore, where the second handle is attached to the door leaf via threaded engagement with a fastener, the provision of multiple attachment points prevents unwanted unscrewing of the second handle from the door leaf. In the above-described embodiment, a first door handle 1 is attached to a first side 74 of a door leaf 7 and a second door handle 2 is attached to a second side 76 of the door leaf 7. However, in alternative embodiments, a single door handle may be attached to a door leaf. Figure 8 shows an embodiment of a door handle assembly 100 in which one handle 101 is attached to one side 74 of a door leaf 7 without a second handle being attached to the reverse side 76 of the door leaf 7. Many of the features in this embodiment are similar to those described above with respect to the two-handled embodiment. However, in the one-handled embodiment, the door leaf 7 comprises a blind hole 171, rather than the through hole used for the two-handled embodiment. The blind hole 171 may have a threaded internal surface configured to threadingly engage with the threaded external surface at the distal end of the fastener 8. Therefore, the fastener 8 is configured to be attached to the door leaf 7 itself rather than to a second handle located on a second side of the door leaf, as is the case in the two-handled door assembly embodiment. The assembly of the components on the first side 74 of the door leaf is similar to that described above with respect to the two-handled door assembly embodiment and need not be repeated. Having described embodiments relating to the attachment of door handles to door leaves, the skilled person will understand that further embodiments may be envisaged in which any type of rigid object is attached to the surface of any suitable rigid body. Examples include but are not limited to attaching handles to walls, drawers or to windows, attaching a coat hook to a wall or door. Furthermore, a bar shower may be attached to a bathroom wall using an attachment assembly as described herein. While various embodiments have been described, it should be understood that that various modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined by the appended claims.
Claims
1. An attachment assembly for attaching an object to a body, the attachment assembly comprising:a collar having a threaded external surface and a recess comprising a threaded internal surface, wherein the threaded external surface is threaded in a first direction and the threaded internal surface is threaded in a second direction opposite to the first direction;a neck having a bore extending therethrough and a threaded external surface, the threaded external surface of the neck being threaded in the second direction, the neck being configured to be received within the recess of the collar and configured to threadingly engage with the threaded internal surface of the recess of the collar;a first object having an attachment arrangement comprising a recess having a threaded internal surface threaded in the first direction, the recess being configured to threadingly engage with the threaded external surface of the collar; anda fastener configured to extend through the bore of the neck and to secure the first object to a first surface of the body.
2. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the fastener comprises a head at a first end thereof, the head arranged to bear upon the neck and thereby urge the neck against the first surface of the body.
3. The attachment assembly of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the collar comprises a formation configured to engage with a tool to facilitate attachment of the collar to the attachment arrangement of the first object.
4. The attachment assembly of any preceding claim, further comprising a first sleeve configured for attachment to the collar or the neck, wherein the first sleeve is configured to overlie at least a portion of the collar and / or the neck when the first sleeve is attached to the collar or the neck.
5. The attachment assembly of claim 4, wherein the neck comprises a flanged portion having a threaded external surface and the first sleeve comprises an internal surface threaded in the same direction as the threaded external surface of the flanged portion so that the first sleeve can be attached to the neck via a threaded engagement.

The attachment assembly of any preceding claim, wherein a portion of an external surface of the fastener proximate a second end thereof is threaded, the attachment assembly further comprising a hole threaded in the same direction as the threaded portion of the external surface of the fastener, the hole being configured to threadingly engage with the threaded portion of the external surface of the fastener.
7. The attachment assembly of claim 6, wherein the hole is disposed within the body to which the first object is to be attached.
8. The attachment assembly of claim 6, further comprising a second object for attachment to a second surface of the body, wherein the second surface is a reverse surface with respect to the first surface of the body, the second object having an attachment arrangement comprising the hole.
9. The attachment assembly of claim 8, further comprising a second sleeve, wherein the second sleeve is configured to overlie the attachment arrangement of the second object when the second object is attached to the body.
10. The attachment assembly of claim 9, wherein the second sleeve comprises a cavity to receive the attachment arrangement of the second object.
11. The attachment assembly of claim 9 or claim 10, wherein the second sleeve has a base configured to abut the second surface of the body, the base having a through hole configured to receive the fastener.
12. The attachment assembly of any of claims 8 to 11, wherein the body is a door leaf, the first object is a first door handle and the second object is a second door handle.
13. The attachment assembly of claim 12, wherein the first door handle and the second door handle each comprise a plurality of respective attachment arrangements.
