Filter Cartridge Replaceable Gasket - Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a filter cartridge end seal arrangement that comprises a known gasket that is fitted to the known filter cartridge end cap.

[0002] According to the first aspect, the present invention relates to a filter cartridge seal arrangement of known type comprising a known type of filter cartridge end cap, that forms a structural part of the known filter cartridge, which also provides a flat surface for the known type of filter gasket to be bonded onto in a known method.

[0003] According to the first aspect, the present invention relates to a filter cartridge seal arrangement of known type comprising a known type of flat elastomeric or thermoplastic material with a known circular shape with a known circular shape hole in the centre, that is known to be bonded onto the known flat face of the known cartridge end cap.

[0004] The present invention further relates to a known type of filter cartridge that is fitted into a known type of filter vessel with a known type of mounting block arrangement or end seal cap that utilizes a known type of knife edge seal, that has a known type of centre tie rod that provides the known axial compression to provide the engagement of the known knife edge seal into the known gasket.

[0005] In a known filter cartridge seal arrangement of the type described in paragraphs

[0001] ,

[0002] ,

[0003] &

[0004] above, said filter cartridge end cap has a said shaped groove that allows a said suitably shaped gasket to be inserted and retained by the said shapes, without the use of a known bonding material, thus providing the advantage that the said gasket can then be installed, removed or replaced as required, either during storage or during filter cartridge operation in the filter vessel.

[0006] Further to the aspects described in paragraph

[0005] above, said removable and replaceable gasket that fits into the said shaped groove in the said endcap, this provides the advantage that the said seal arrangement means that the said gasket no longer is permanently bonded to the said filter end cap, thus the shelf storage life of the said gasket no longer defines the shelf life of the filter cartridge, unlike the known filter cartridge seal arrangement where the known gasket is permanently bonded to the known flat face of the known filter cartridge end cap design.

[0007] Further to the aspects described in paragraph

[0006] above, the said replaceable nature of the said shaped gasket, means the filter cartridge can be stored for a significantly longer than the known shelf life of the known filter cartridge gasket arrangement, which means with the said replaceable nature of the said gasket it offers reduced wastage of usable useable filter cartridges that no longer have a shelf life determined by the gasket.

[0008] The said filter cartridge end cap with the said shaped groove will now be described solely by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the end view of the said filter cartridge end cap according to this present invention. Figure 2 shows a section view through the said filter cartridge end cap. Figure 4 shows a detail view (Detail B) of the section of the said filter cartridge end cap. Figure 5 shows the end view of the said shaped gasket. Figure 7 shows a section view through the said shaped gasket. Figure 8 shows a detail view (Detail D) of the section of the said shaped gasket. Figure 10 shows the end view of the said filter cartridge seal end cap assembly with the said filter end cap with installed said shaped gasket. Figure 11 shows a section of the said filter cartridge seal end cap assembly. Figure 13 shows a detail view (Detail F) of the section of the said filter cartridge seal end cap assembly. Figure 14 shows the said filter cartridge assembly located adjacent to the known mounting block. The known tie rod and end seal cap assembly has been omitted for clarity. Figure 15 shows a section of the said filter cartridge assembly located adjacent to the known mounting block. The known tie rod and end seal cap assembly has been omitted for clarity. Figure 16 shows the said filter cartridge assembly located on to the known mounting block with the known tie rod applying the known end load to energise the said shaped gasket. The known tie rod and end seal cap assembly has been omitted for clarity. Figure 17 shows a section of the said filter cartridge assembly located onto the known mounting block with the known tie rod applying the known end load to energise the said shaped gasket. The known tie rod and end seal cap assembly has been omitted for clarity. Figure 18 shows the detail view (Detail J) of the section through the said filter cartridge end cap, said shaped gasket and known filter cartridge mounting block where the known tie rod applying the known end load to energise the said shaped gasket.

[0009] As shown in Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3, the said filter cartridge end cap 1 has the said shaped gasket groove 2.

[0010] As shown in Figure 4, this shows the detail section through the said filter cartridge end cap with the said shaped groove, showing the angled faces 3.

[0011] As shown in Figure 5, Figure 6, Figure 7 and Figure 8, the said shaped gasket 4 has the matching angled faces 5.

[0012] As shown in Figure 9, Figure 10, Figure 11 and Figure 12, this shows the said filter cartridge end cap 1 with the said shaped gasket 4 as an assembly.

[0013] As shown in Figure 13, this shows the detail section through the said filter cartridge end cap assembly with the said shaped groove and the said shaped gasket installed.

[0014] As shown in Figure 14 and Figure 15, this shows the filter cartridge assembly located with the said end cap assembly (1 &4) adjacent to the known mounting block 6, with the tie rod assembly omitted for clarity.

[0015] As shown in Figure 16 and Figure 17, this shows the this shows the filter cartridge assembly with the said end cap assembly (1 &4) where the known tie rod and end seal cap assembly applying the known end load to energise the said shaped gasket onto the known mounting block 6.

[0016] As shown in Figure 18, this shows the detail view of the said filter cartridge end cap assembly (1 &4) where the known tie rod and end seal cap assembly applying the known end load to energise the said shaped gasket onto the known mounting block 6, it can be seen that the known knife edge seal 7 has engaged into the said shaped gasket 4.

[0017] As described in paragraphs

[0015] and

[0016] above, the said filter cartridge end cap seal arrangement provides the known seal method by the action of the known axial compression from the known tie rod assembly, but it also adds the advantage that differential pressure between the inside bore of the filter cartridge and the outside of the filter cartridge, pushes the said gasket either radially inwards or radially outwards (depending on which direction the filter cartridge has the fluid flowing), thus increasing the effectiveness of the said gasket by increasing the force the angled faces 5 of the said gasket exert onto the angles faces 3 of the said shaped groove in the said filter cartridge end cap, whilst maintaining the known axial seal compression onto the known knife edge.

[0018] The said filter cartridge end cap seal arrangement with the said filter cartridge end cap and said shaped gasket will seal onto the known end seal cap in the same way it does onto the known mounting block, as the known tie rod assembly applies the same known axial compression onto throughout the known filter vessel cartridge vessel with the known filter cartridge installation methods.

[0019] As described in paragraph 18 above, these known filter installation designs are published on the major filter cartridge manufacturer's websites (such as Facet Filtration website www.facetfiltration.com) and as described in the widely used in aviation fuel filtration systems, such as the ones in specifications such as El-1581, El-1590 and El-1596 issued by the Energy Institute©.
