[0100] An aerosol modifier is a substance that is typically disposed downstream of the aerosol-generation region and configured to modify the generated aerosol, for example by changing the taste, flavor, acidity, or another characteristic of the aerosol. The aerosol modifier may be provided in an aerosol modifier-emitting component that is operable to selectively emit the aerosol modifier.

[0101] The aerosol modifier may be, for example, an additive or an adsorbent. The aerosol modifier may include, for example, one or more of a flavoring, a colorant, water, and a carbon adsorbent. The aerosol modifier may be, for example, a solid, a liquid, or a gel. The aerosol modifier may be in the form of a powder, a string, or a granule. The aerosol modifier may be free of a filtration material.

[0102] The aerosol generator is a device configured to generate an aerosol from an aerosol-generating material. In some embodiments, the aerosol generator is a heater configured to subject the aerosol-generating material to thermal energy, thereby releasing one or more volatile components from the aerosol-generating material to form an aerosol. In some embodiments, the aerosol generator is configured to generate an aerosol from the aerosol-generating material without heating. For example, the aerosol generator may be configured to subject the aerosol-generating material to one or more of vibration, increased pressure, or electrostatic energy.

[0103] 1 is a perspective view of a package 1 for a delivery system. The delivery system may be an aerosol delivery system. The package 1 comprises an outer container 2. In this embodiment, the outer container 2 comprises a base 3 and a lid 4 attached to the base 3 for rotation between an open position and a closed position. The lid 4 is attached to the base 3 for rotation about a hinge line 5.

[0104] The package further comprises an inner container 6. The outer container 2 comprises an access through which the inner container 6 can be accessed. The access in the illustrated embodiment can be found by rotating the lid 4 away from the base 3 from a closed position to an open position. However, it will be appreciated that in alternative embodiments the package 1 may take forms other than a hinged lid box.

[0105] The inner container 6 is disposed within the outer container 2. The inner container 6 comprises a wrapper 7 configured to surround at least one aerosol delivery system 8, shown in FIG. 5. The wrapper 7 forms a packaged bundle of aerosol delivery systems (not shown). The wrapper 7 may comprise a barrier material 9. The wrapper 7 is sealed by closing an opening therein. The opening may refer to a removal area or opening in the wrapper 7, as described in more detail below, or an opening formed in the process of wrapping the wrapper 7 around the delivery system and a subsequent flap formed by folding the wrapper 7 to close the opening.

[0106] The wrapper 7 comprises a first layer 11. The first layer 11 comprises a paper-based material. The first layer 11 may be a paper layer 11a. In some embodiments, the paper layer may be a coated paper or a barrier paper. That is, the first layer 11 may be a paper-based material comprising a barrier material 9. The barrier material 9 may be applied as a coating on the paper layer or may be provided as a single layer interspersed or impregnated within the paper layer. The barrier material 9 may be plastic or metal and may be applied as a coating 11b on the paper layer 11a or may be applied as a single layer 11 within the paper material.

[0107] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may further comprise a second layer 12, as shown in Figure 2. In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may further comprise a third layer 13, as shown in Figure 2.

[0108] In this embodiment, the second layer 12 is a metallized layer 12. The metallized layer 12 is provided on the first layer 11, which is a paper-based material 11. That is, the metal layer may be deposited or otherwise applied to the paper-based material 11. This effectively forms a metallized paper or metal foil / paper laminate. In this embodiment, the metallized layer 12 provides an initial barrier for the paper-based material 11 to prevent or at least reduce moisture and / or aromas from passing through the wrapper 7. That is, the metallized layer 12 is substantially impermeable. The metallized layer may have a weight of about 0.1 grams per meter. In some embodiments, the metallized layer may be aluminum.

[0109] Thus, in this embodiment, the first and second layers combine to effectively form a type of barrier coated paper. It will be appreciated that in the manufacture of wrapper 7, paper layer 11 can be provided and second layer 12 can be applied to paper layer 12 to form a coated or barrier paper. Alternatively, manufacture of wrapper 7 can begin with a coated or barrier paper, thereby eliminating the step of applying a barrier material or coating to paper layer 11.

[0110] In some embodiments, such as that shown in Figure 2, the third layer 13 is a barrier coating and is provided over the second layer 12, in this example a metallized layer 12. The second layer 12 provides a smooth surface onto which the barrier coating 13 can be applied. The metallized layer 12 as the second layer provides a barrier to prevent the barrier coating 13 from penetrating into the first layer, in this example a paper layer. Thus, the barrier coating can be applied as a tight film, which increases the impermeability of the wrapper 7.

[0111] The barrier coating 13 preferably forms the inner surface of the wrapper 7. Thus, the barrier coating 13 faces inwards and cannot be damaged by contact with the consumer or the outer container 2.

[0112] As previously mentioned, the wrapper 7 is sealed by closing its opening, for example, by gluing and sealing the opening. In this embodiment, the wrapper 7 is sealed at its overlapping edges 10a. The wrapper 7 may be sealed by gluing together the edges 10a of the wrapper 7 that overlap when the wrapper 7 is folded to form the inner container 6. The adhesive 10 may be provided such that when the wrapper 7 is folded to form the inner container 6, there is a continuous portion of adhesive extending along each of the overlapping edges 10a of the wrapper 7. The adhesive 10 may be provided on the wrapper 7 such that when the wrapper 7 is folded to form the inner container 6, the adhesive 10 is not visible.

[0113] The seal helps to keep the contents fresh. It can also ensure that the wrapper is sealed so that water vapor and / or air cannot freely flow into the inner container 6 (apart from through the dispensing area when opened to access the at least one aerosol delivery system 8). This is in contrast to constructions where the wrapper is formed to surround the at least one aerosol delivery system, for example by folding and applying a limited adhesive, but is not sealed by closing the opening, and thus presents openings or gaps through which air can freely pass. In such constructions, a limited adhesive application, such as a point bond, can be used to keep the folded portion in place, but does not necessarily prevent the free flow of water vapor and / or air through any openings or gaps provided by the shape of the folded portion.

[0114] It should be noted that the wrapper 7 does not necessarily need to be hermetically sealed, but may be sealed such that water vapor and / or air cannot freely flow into the inner container 6. For example, although it is possible for water vapor and / or air or other gases to diffuse through the material of the wrapper and into the inner container 6, this is not considered to be a free flow of water vapor and / or air or other gases because the movement of water vapor and / or air or other gases is impeded by the material of the wrapper. That is, the adhesive seal along the overlapping edges 10a of the wrapper 7 is airtight such that water vapor and / or air or other gases cannot pass between the overlapping portions of the wrapper 7, but air may still pass through the wrapper 7 to some extent.

[0115] The overlapping flaps 10 may be flaps on the top of the inner container 6, as shown in FIG. 1, and / or flaps found on the front, back, side, or bottom walls formed by the wrapper 7. The sealed inner container 6 keeps the contents fresher even longer. The inner container 6 may be sealed by providing an adhesive (not shown) on at least one of the exterior surfaces of the wrapper 7. The adhesive may be, for example, but not limited to, a glue, a lacquer, or a heat seal adhesive. In some embodiments, the overlapping edges of the wrapper may be sealed with an adhesive, but the seal may or may not be airtight. In some conditions, for example, tropical conditions such as 30° C. and 90% relative humidity (1249 ASTM), the wrapper 7 may have a water vapor transmission rate of less than 8 g / m2 / 24hr. In some conditions, the wrapper 7 may have a water vapor transmission rate of less than 6 g / m2 / 24hr at 30° C. and 90% relative humidity (1249 ASTM).

[0116] For example, a blank 45 for forming a wrapper 7 is shown in Figures 3 and 4. The wrapper 7 may be provided with adhesive extending around the entire perimeter or edge 47 of the inner surface 46, as shown in Figure 3, or the wrapper 7 may be provided with adhesive extending around at least a portion of the perimeter or edge 49 of the outer surface 48 of the wrapper 7, as shown in Figure 4. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 46 is provided with adhesive 10 on edge 49a forming its front base flap and on edges 49b, 49c forming its rear side flaps.

[0117] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 is sealed such that the inner container 6 is hermetically sealed.

[0118] 5, 6, 7 and 8, various different embodiments of the wrapper 7 are shown. For example, FIG. 5 shows an exemplary wrapper 7 comprising a first layer 11. The first layer 11 comprises a paper-based material in the form of a barrier paper. That is, the first layer 11 comprises a paper layer 11a and a barrier material 9 in the form of a metallic coating. In this embodiment, the barrier material 9 is disposed on an inner surface of the paper layer 11a.

[0119] An alternative example shown in Figure 6 shows a wrapper comprising a first layer 11 formed from a paper based material in the form of a barrier paper 11b, where the barrier material 9 is within the paper layer 11a to form a single layer of material. The barrier material 9 may be, for example, but not limited to, metal or plastic.

[0120] 7, there is shown a wrapper 7 comprising a first ply 11 formed by a paper layer 11a and a second ply 12. In this embodiment, the second ply 12 is disposed on an inner surface of the paper layer 11a.

[0121] 8, there is shown a wrapper 7 comprising a first layer 11 formed by a paper layer 11a and a third layer 13 on top of the paper layer 11a. In this embodiment, the third layer 13 is disposed on an inner surface of the paper layer 11a. The second layer 12 is not required.

[0122] As discussed above in relation to the second layer, it will be appreciated that in some embodiments the first layer 11 and the third layer 13 may be combined to effectively form a type of barrier coated paper. It will be appreciated that during the manufacture of the wrapper 7, a paper layer 11 may be provided and the third layer 13 may be applied to the paper layer 11 to form a plastic or varnish coated paper or barrier paper. Alternatively, the manufacture of the wrapper 7 may begin with a plastic or varnish coated paper or barrier paper, thereby eliminating the step of providing a paper layer 11 having a plastic barrier material or coating.

[0123] It will further be understood that in some embodiments, the second and / or third layers 12, 13 may be disposed on an outer surface of the first layer 11. It will further be understood that in some embodiments, the second layer 12 may be on one side of the first layer 11 and the third layer may be on the other side of the first layer 11.

[0124] In some embodiments, the package 1 has no internal frame, i.e., the package does not include additional structural elements within the outer container 2 or inner container 6 to provide the package with greater rigidity. An internal frame can be omitted since the necessary rigidity is provided by the outer package 2 and / or inner package 6. The lack of an internal frame in the package 1 reduces the complexity of the manufacturing process, requires less raw materials, produces less waste, and is therefore better for the environment.

[0125] 9, the package 1 may further include an internal frame 25. The internal frame 25 may be disposed outside the wrapper 7 of the inner container 6 and inside the outer container 2, as shown in FIG. 1. That is, the inner container 6 does not have an internal frame 25.

[0126] 9, the inner frame 25 has a front panel 26 and two side flaps 27. A cut or fold line 30 forms a corner when the side flaps 27 are folded at a right angle to the panel 26, as shown in FIG.

[0127] In some embodiments, the barrier coating 13 comprises a metallized layer 12. In such embodiments, the intermediate layer 12 may be formed from another material, such as, for example, but not limited to, clay.

[0128] Furthermore, each component of the package is formed from a paper-based material; that is, the outer container 2 and inner container 6, as well as the internal frame (if included), are all formed from paper-based materials. In addition, it means that the package 1 does not include a plastic overwrap common to known packages. In fact, the construction of the wrapper 7 means that no plastic overwrap is required to keep the contents of the package 1 fresh.

[0129] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 has a weight of less than 80 grams per square meter (gsm). In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 has a weight of less than 70 gsm. In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 has a weight of less than 50 gsm. In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 has a weight of less than 45 gsm. In some embodiments, the paper-based material has a paper weight of less than 70 grams per square meter (gsm). In some embodiments, the paper-based material has a paper weight of less than 50 gsm. In some embodiments, the paper-based material has a paper weight of less than 45 gsm.

[0130] A lighter wrapper 7, i.e., a lower gsm of 70 gsm or less, means that the wrapper 7 is thinner. A thinner wrapper 7 offers less resistance to folding the wrapper 7. This helps to avoid a thick layer of material building up at the folded corners of the container 6 and to avoid holes in the wrapper seal in these areas of raised material. Thus, a lower gsm wrapper 7 helps keep the contents fresher for longer by reducing gaps in the seal.

[0131] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 comprises at least 90% of the first material. The first material may be a paper-based material. In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may also have a moisture vapor transmission rate of less than 8 g / m2 / 24 hr or less than 6 g / m2 / 24 hr at 30° C. and 90% relative humidity (1249 ASTM).

[0132] A high percentage of a single material increases the likelihood that the material can be easily recycled. Additionally, a low water vapor transmission rate prevents water vapor from passing through the wrapper 7, so that the inner container 6 keeps its contents fresher for longer.

[0133] In some embodiments, wrapper 7 comprises at least 92.5% of the first material. In other embodiments, wrapper 7 comprises at least 95% of the first material. In further embodiments, wrapper 7 comprises at least 98.5% of the first material. In some embodiments, the percentage of the first material is calculated based on the mass of the first material and wrapper 7.

[0134] The water vapor transmission rate of the first material is preferably less than 6 g / m2 / 24 hr at 30° C. and 90% relative humidity (1249 ASTM). More preferably, the water vapor transmission rate of the first material is less than 5 g / m2 / 24 hr, more preferably less than 3 g / m2 / 24 hr, and even more preferably less than 1 g / m2 / 24 hr, under the same conditions as above. The lower the water vapor transmission rate of the first material, the longer the components and / or articles and / or delivery system within the inner container 6 can remain fresh.

[0135] The wrapper 7 is preferably recyclable. The first material is preferably compostable. The first material is preferably a non-plastic material. The first material may be, for example, but not limited to, paper.

[0136] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may comprise a second material. The second material may be metal. The first and second materials may be arranged in a layer to form the wrapper 7 that forms the inner container 6. In some embodiments, the first and second layers are laminated. The second material forming the second layer is preferably applied as a coating to the first material forming the first layer. The metal layer may protect the paper layer from tearing.

[0137] The wrapper 7 may comprise less than 10% by weight of the second material. In other embodiments, the wrapper 7 comprises less than 5% of the second material. In further embodiments, the wrapper 7 comprises less than 2.5% of the second material. In some embodiments, the percentage of the second material is calculated based on the mass of the second material and the wrapper 7.

[0138] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may comprise a third material. The third material may be a plastic. The first, second and third materials may be arranged in layers to form a wrapper forming the inner container 6, as described above. In some embodiments, the first, second and third layers are laminated. The third material forming the third layer is preferably applied as a coating to the second material forming the second layer. The third material may be a plastic coating.

[0139] The second layer of metal may be partially absorbed into the first paper layer so as to form a good connection with the first layer and provide a smooth outer surface. A plastic coating layer may be applied to the second metal layer. Due to the smoothness of the metal layer, the plastic coating layer does not have any holes. This prevents air and water vapor from passing through the third layer of plastic. The plastic coating may be impermeable.

[0140] The wrapper 7 may comprise less than 10% by weight of the third material. In other embodiments, the wrapper 7 comprises less than 5% of the third material. In further embodiments, the wrapper 7 comprises less than 2.5% of the third material. In some embodiments, the percentage of the third material is calculated based on the mass of the third material and the wrapper 7.

[0141] In some embodiments, the wrapper 7 may further comprise a layer of clay 50, as shown in FIG. 10. The wrapper 7 may comprise a first clay layer 50a on the inner surface of the first layer, which in this embodiment is a paper-based material 11 such as paper. The first clay layer 50a may be disposed between the first layer 11 and a second layer, which in this embodiment is a metallized layer 12. Alternatively, the first clay layer 50a may be disposed between the first layer 11 and a third layer 13, which may be a plastic or varnish coating. Thus, the metallized layer 12 or barrier coating 13 is applied to the inner surface of the first clay layer 50a. The first clay layer 50a forms a layer to which the metallized layer can more easily adhere.

[0142] The wrapper 7 may further comprise a second clay layer 50b on an outer surface of the first layer 11. The second clay layer 50b may form an outer surface of the wrapper 7 upon which indicia may be printed.

[0143] The package 1 may further comprise a tamper-evident means 60. More particularly, as shown in Figures 11 and 12, the outer container 2 may comprise a tamper-evident means 60. It will be appreciated that a tamper-evident means 60 similar to that described herein may also be used with a variety of other types of packages other than hinged lid boxes. The tamper-evident means 60 may be attached to both the base 3 and the lid 4 to indicate whether the outer container 2 has previously been opened or an attempt has been made to open the outer container 2.

[0144] The tamper evident means 60 of the outer container 2 may be formed from the front lid wall flap 61 of the lid 4. The tamper evident means indicates to the user if the package 1 has been previously opened, which is required in the present invention since the outer plastic wrap, which would normally indicate tampering, is removed so that the entire package 1 can be recyclable. A portion 62 of the front lid wall flap 62 may be separated from the remainder of the front lid wall flap 62 by a tear line. The tear line is generally U-shaped, beginning and ending at a fold line 63 between the front wall of the lid 4 and the front lid wall flap 61.

[0145] A portion 62 of the front lid wall flap is rotated outwardly to extend parallel to the front wall of the lid 4 and is adhered to the front wall of the base 3 of the outer container 2. This portion 62 may include a line of weakness 65, as shown in Figure 11. The line of weakness 65 may extend along the fold line 63. Thus, when the lid 4 is first opened, the line of weakness 65 may be at least partially broken to indicate an attempt to open the outer container 2.

[0146] 12, portion 62 may include a second line of weakness 66 that extends parallel to but spaced from first line of weakness 66 to form a tear tape 67. Tear tape 67 may include a tab 68 at one end for the consumer to pull.

[0147] Alternatively or additionally, the tamper evident means 60 may comprise a stamp or sticker 69 having at least a portion adhered to the base 3 and at least a portion adhered to the lid 4, as shown in Figure 13. The stamp 69 may comprise the lines of weakness 65 or tear tape 67 described above.

[0148] In some embodiments, as shown in Figure 14, the inner container 6 of the package 1 may alternatively or additionally comprise a tamper-evident means 70. The tamper-evident means 70 may comprise a stamp 71 disposed at the top of the inner container 6 at the fold of the package formed by the wrapper 7. That is, the stamp 71 has at least a portion adhered to the two flaps at the top of the inner container 6. The stamp 71 may comprise a line of weakness 72 that coincides with an edge of the label 18.

[0149] 15, there is shown a package 100 comprising an inner pack 120. The inner container 120 comprises a first end wall 122. The first end wall 122 is proximate to the lid 104 of the pack 100. The inner container further comprises a second end wall 123. The second end wall 123 is distal to the lid 104. The second end wall 123 is longitudinally spaced from the first end wall 122. That is, the package 100 and / or inner container 120 comprises a longitudinal axis along which the longest dimension of the package 100 and / or inner container 120 extends, and the first end wall 122 and the second end wall 123 are spaced apart a distance along this axis.

[0150] 15, the first end wall 122 includes a first flap 125 and a second flap 126. The first and second flaps 125, 126 of the first end wall 122 extend from opposite sides of the first end wall 122. That is, the first flap 125 extends from a first side 122a of the first end wall 122, and the second flap 126 extends from a second opposite side 122b of the first end wall 122. The first flap 125 and the second flap 126 are configured to be attached to each other to seal the inner container 120. The first flap 125 and the second flap 126 may be attached to each other using an adhesive 129. An adhesive 129 may be applied between the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 such that the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 form a seal that prevents, or at least reduces, air permeability of the inner container 120. The adhesive 129 may be disposed on an inner surface of the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122. The adhesive 129 may be disposed on an outer surface of the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122.

[0151] 15, the inner container 120, like each of the inner containers or packs described subsequently, comprises a number of side walls extending between a first end wall 122 and a second end wall 123. In the illustrated embodiment, like the embodiments described subsequently, the inner container 120 has a cubic shape. Thus, the inner container 120, and the embodiments described subsequently, comprises a first side wall 131, a second side wall 132, a third side wall 133, and a fourth side wall 134. The inner container 120 comprises opposing first and second side walls 131, 132, and opposing third and fourth side walls 133, 134.

[0152] The inner container 120 further comprises first, second, third and fourth upper edges 135a, 136a, 137a, 138a where the first, second, third and fourth side walls 131, 132, 133, 134 meet the first end wall 122. Thus, the first side 122a of the first end wall 122 is formed by the first upper edge 135a and the second side 122b of the first end wall 122 is formed by the second upper edge 136a. The inner container 120 further comprises first, second, third and fourth lower edges 135b, 136b, 137b, 138b where the first, second, third and fourth side walls 131, 132, 133, 134 meet the second end wall 123.

[0153] It will be appreciated that in alternative embodiments, the inner container 120 may have a different shaped prism, such as, but not limited to, a hexagonal prism, and in such embodiments, it will be appreciated that the inner container 120 further comprises additional side walls, upper and lower edges, etc.

[0154] The first end wall 122 further comprises third and fourth flaps 127, 128. The third and fourth flaps 127, 128 extend from third and fourth top edges 137a, 138a formed by the flaps 127, 128 with the third and fourth side walls 133, 134. The third and fourth flaps 127, 128 may also comprise an adhesive 129 to seal the first end wall 122. Thus, each flap 126, 127, 128 overlapped by the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 may be secured to the other flap by the adhesive 129 to seal the inner container 120.

[0155] 16 , the wrapper 7 of the inner container 120 includes a portion 140 that is at least partially separable from a remainder 141 of the wrapper 7 to unseal the inner container 120 and provide access to the interior of the inner container 120 to access the aerosol delivery system components or articles contained within the inner container 120. The portion 140 of the wrapper 79 that is at least partially separable from the remainder 141 of the inner container 120 includes a first flap 125 of the first end wall 122.

[0156] As shown in Figures 15 and 16, the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 is larger than the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. With brief reference to Figure 16, this is shown with the first and second flaps 125, 126 of the first end wall 122 in an unfolded state, with the first flap 125 being longer than the second flap 126, as will be explained in more detail below.

[0157] 15, it can be seen that the first flap 125 is larger than the second flap 126 such that the first flap 125 is configured to extend substantially over the first end wall 122 of the inner container 120 toward the opposing side 122b of the first end wall 122. That is, the first flap 125 extends substantially over the first end wall 122 from the first side 122a, i.e., the first top edge 135a, of the first end wall 122 toward the second opposing side 122b, i.e., the second top edge 136a, of the first end wall 122. Thus, the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 overlaps substantially all of the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. The first flap may overlap the second flap by more than 5mm, optionally by between 5mm and 25mm, preferably between 5mm and 20mm, optionally by between 7mm and 15mm.

[0158] The above reference that the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 is longer than the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 refers to the distance between the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 and the opposing side wall 122b of the first end wall 122, i.e., the second upper edge 136a, being shorter than the distance between the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 and its opposing side of the first end wall 122, i.e., the first upper edge 135a or the first side 122a of the first end wall 122.

[0159] The first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 comprises a first portion 143 and a second portion 144. The first portion 143 of the first flap 125 is secured to the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. The second portion 144 of the first flap 122 is not secured to the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. That is, the adhesive 129 attaches the first portion 143 of the first flap 125 to the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. Thus, the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 is not secured to the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122, and as a result, the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 is free to move. The second portion 144 of the first flap 125 is configured to be pulled by a user to at least partially separate the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 of the inner container 120 and unseal the inner container 120 to allow access to the interior of the inner container 120.

[0160] The first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 includes a fold line 145. The fold line 145 defines one end of the first flap 125. The fold line 145 may be disposed on the first side 122a of the first end wall 122. That is, the fold line 145 is disposed on the first top edge 135a of the inner container 120. The first portion 143 of the first flap 125 is disposed between the fold line 145 and the second portion 144 of the first flap 125. Thus, the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 forms a free end 146 of the first flap 125. The free end 146 of the first flap 125 includes a free edge 147.

[0161] When opening the inner container 120 to access it, the consumer places a finger inside the free end 146 of the first flap 125 and pinches the second portion 144 of the first flap 125. The consumer then pulls on the second portion 144 of the first flap 125, breaking the seal provided by the adhesive 129 between the first portion 143 of the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 of the inner container 120.

[0162] The consumer pulls the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 in the direction indicated by arrow A in FIG. 15. That is, the consumer rotates the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 about the fold line 145 of the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122. As explained above, this movement breaks the seal formed between the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 by the adhesive 129, partially separating the portion 140, i.e., the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122, from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 120, i.e., the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122, allowing access to its interior.

[0163] Once the seal formed by the adhesive 129 between the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 is broken, the first, second, third and fourth flaps 125, 126, 127, 128 may all be unfolded, as shown by arrow B in Figure 16, to allow access 149 to the interior of the inner container 120. Of course, in some embodiments, access 149 may be allowed by unfolding only the first flap 125.

[0164] In this embodiment, the inner container 120 can be resealed by folding the flaps 125, 126, 127, 128 and applying pressure to the adhesive 129 so that the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 reseal. Thus, the adhesive 129 is preferably a cold seal adhesive, more preferably a resealable cold seal adhesive. The resealable cold adhesive may be, for example and without limitation, an adhesive derived from natural rubber, latex, resin, PVA, or Loctite Liofol CS 22-861US1. The cold seal adhesive can be selected for the desired properties. The cold seal adhesive may be extrudable, water-based, or solvent-based with peelable, reclosable, or permanent seal. Cold seal adhesives are generally easy to process at fast print speeds, have a long shelf life on reels of sheet material, can be applied to sheet material and recycled, and are approved for direct food contact. The cold seal adhesive is placed on both adhesive surfaces and requires only contact and / or pressure to bond together to form a seal, i.e., the cold seal adhesive does not require heat to activate the adhesive.

[0165]

[00136] Referring now briefly to Figure 17, there is shown another embodiment of an inner container 150 in accordance with the present invention. The inner container 150 shown in Figure 17 is generally similar to the embodiment of the inner container 120 described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein. Additionally, features and components of the inner container 150 that are the same as those of the inner container 120 retain the same terminology and reference numerals.

[0166] In this embodiment of inner container 150, the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 further comprises a tab 152. The tab 152 extends from the free edge 147 of the second portion 145 of the first flap 125. The tab 152 is configured to be pulled by a user to unseal the inner container 150, similar to the embodiment of inner container 120 described above.

[0167] In embodiments in which the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 includes a tab 152, the adhesive 129 that forms a seal between the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 may be disposed on both the first and second portions 143, 144 of the first flap 215, or may be disposed only on the first portion 143 of the first flap 125. However, in this embodiment, the adhesive 129 is only shown forming a seal between the first portion 143 of the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122.

[0168] The tab 152 is a more visible extension of the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122, which may be more easily recognized by a consumer and aids in the openability of the inner container 150. Additionally, the tab 152 may include at least one indicia 153. The at least one indicia 153 may be configured to provide a consumer with information regarding how to unseal the inner container 150 to access the interior of the inner container 150. The at least one indicia 153 may be in the form of printed or embossed instructions, such as, for example, but not limited to, text, a logo, an arrow, or a color to identify the tab 152 and to indicate how the tab 152 should be moved.

[0169] The tab 152 may extend from a central portion 154 of the free end 146 of the first flap 125, as shown in FIG. 17. However, it will be appreciated that the tab 152 may be off-center or asymmetrical relative to the free edge 147 of the first flap 125 in alternative embodiments. Further, in this embodiment, the tab 152 has a semicircular shape. However, in alternative embodiments, the tab 152 may have a shape such as, for example, but not limited to, a square, a triangle, or a rectangle.

[0170] In some embodiments, the tab 152 may extend from the free edge 147 of the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 beyond the second side 122b or the second top edge 136a of the first end wall 122. Thus, a portion 155 of the tab 152 may protrude from the second side 122b of the first end wall 122. Thus, when the inner container 150 is disposed within the outer container 2, the portion 155 of the tab 152 may extend into the lid 4 when the lid 4 is in an open position. The protruding portion 155 of the tab 152 makes the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 easier to grasp and release the seal of the inner container 150 to allow access to the interior of the inner container 150.

[0171] The inner container 150 of this embodiment is opened in a similar manner to the inner container 120 described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein.

[0172] 18 and 19, there is shown another embodiment of an inner container 160 according to the present invention. The inner container 160 shown in Figures 18 and 19 is generally similar to the embodiments of the inner containers 120, 150 described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein. Furthermore, features and components of the inner container 160 that are the same as those of the inner containers 120, 150 retain the same terminology and reference numerals.

[0173] 18 , the inner container 160 further comprises a first line of weakness 161. The first line of weakness 161 is configured to help separate the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 of the inner container 160 from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 to allow access to the inner container 160. That is, the first line of weakness 161 separates the portion 140 comprising the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160.

[0174] Thus, in this embodiment, when a consumer pulls on the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122, the portion 140 comprising the first flap 125 is separated from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160, permanently breaking the seal of the inner container 160. In the embodiment comprising the first line of weakness 161, the adhesive 129 forming the seal between the first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 may be a permanent adhesive such as, for example, but not limited to, a natural rubber adhesive, a latex adhesive, a resin adhesive, a cellulose adhesive, a polypropylene (PP) adhesive, a polyethylene (PE) adhesive, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) adhesive, and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) adhesive.

[0175] In the embodiment shown in FIG. 18 , the first line of weakness 161 extends at least partially around at least one of the side walls 131, 132, 133, 134 to define a portion 140 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 of the inner container 160.

[0176] In this embodiment, the first line of weakness 161 extends at least partially across the first side wall 131 of the inner container 160. The first line of weakness 161 is thus configured such that the portion 140 separable from the remainder of the wrapper 7 comprises the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 and a portion 162 of the first side wall 131.

[0177] Furthermore, in this embodiment, the first line of weakness 161 extends from an end of the first flap 125 between the first end wall 122 and the first side wall 131 partially along the first edge 135a. The first flap 122 of the inner container 160 comprises an end where the first edge 135a meets the third edge 137a and the fourth edge 138a at first and second corners 164, 165, respectively. Thus, the first line of weakness 161 can extend along the first edge 135a from an end in the form of the first corner 164 towards the second corner 165 of the inner container 160. In addition, the first line of weakness 161 can also extend from an end in the form of the second corner 165 along the first edge 135a. In some embodiments, the first line of weakness 161 may be configured to separate the first flap 125 from the third and fourth flaps 127, 128.

[0178] Between ends 164 and 165 of the first edge 135a of the inner container 160, the first line of weakness extends into the first sidewall 131 of the inner container 160. As shown in FIG. 18 , the first line of weakness 161 extending through the first sidewall 131 is substantially “U-shaped”. That is, the portion of the first line of weakness 161 extending through the first sidewall 131 comprises a bottom portion 167, a first side portion 168, and a second side portion 169. The U-shaped line of weakness 161 is advantageous because it allows for removal of a substantial portion 162 of the first sidewall 131, which provides easier access to components, systems, or items within the inner container 160.

[0179] In this embodiment, the lower portion 167 of the first line of weakness 161 extends parallel to the first top edge 135a of the inner container 160. Additionally, the first and second sides 168, 169 of the first line of weakness 161 extend at an angle to the first top edge 135a of the inner container 160. As shown in FIG. 18, the first and second sides 168, 169 extend outwardly toward the first and second corners 164, 165 of the first flap 125, respectively. The first and second sides 168, 169 of the first line of weakness 161 preferably have a draft angle between 10 degrees and 40 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis X of the inner container 160. The draft angle of the first and second sides 168, 169 helps the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 of the first sidewall 131 to separate from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160.

[0180] The inner container 160 is opened in a similar manner to the inner container 120 described with reference to Figure 15. The consumer pulls on the second portion 144 of the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122, causing the first flap 125 to rotate in the direction indicated by arrow D in Figure 18. This movement can break the seal formed by the flaps 125, 126 of the first end wall 122, and the consumer can then pull the first flap 125 upwards in the direction of the X-axis indicated by arrow E in Figure 19 to remove the portion 140 from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160.

[0181] 19 , it can be seen that the inner container 160 may further comprise a second line of weakness 172 that is broken by removing the separable portion 140 from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160. The second line of weakness 172 is configured such that the separable portion 140 from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 comprises the first flap 125, the portion 162 of the first side wall 131, and the portion of the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122.

[0182] In alternative embodiments, the second line of weakness 172 may be omitted. In such embodiments, the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160 may be removed by breaking the first line of weakness 161 and the adhesive seal 129. In such embodiments, the adhesive seal 129 may be formed from a non-permanent or peelable adhesive. Further, in such embodiments, the portion 140 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 160 may not comprise a portion of the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122. In further embodiments where the adhesive seal is formed by a permanent adhesive, that portion of the second flap 126 may be torn from the remaining portion of the second flap 126.

[0183] In this embodiment, the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 comprises a first portion 173, best seen in FIG. 19 , and a second portion 174 separated by a second line of weakness 172. The first portion 173 of the second flap 126 is secured to the first flap 125 of the first end wall 122 by adhesive 129. The second line of weakness 172 is configured such that the portion of the second flap 126 that forms part of the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 that is separable from the remainder 141 of the inner container 160 is the first portion 173 of the second flap 126 that is attached to the first flap 125 by adhesive 129.

[0184] 18, it can be seen that the first line of weakness 161 may extend from a first corner 164 of the first flap 125 along the third top edge 137a toward the second top edge 136a such that at least a portion of the third flap 127 of the first end wall 122 also forms part of the portion 140 separable from the remainder 141 of the inner container 160. That is, the first line of weakness 161 may extend from the first edge 135a at least partially along the third edge 137a. Similarly, the first line of weakness 161 may extend from a second corner 165 of the first flap 125 along the fourth top edge 138a toward the second top edge 136a such that at least a portion of the fourth flap 128 of the first end wall 122 also forms part of the portion 140 separable from the remainder 141 of the inner container 160. That is, the first line of weakness 161 may extend from the first edge 135a at least partially along the fourth edge 138a.

[0185] 19 shows the remaining portion 141 of the inner pack 160 when the portion 140 comprising the third and fourth flaps 127, 128 of the first end wall 122 has been removed from the inner container 160. In such an embodiment, the first and second lines of weakness 161, 172 may be integrally formed. For example, the first line of weakness 161 may extend across the first end wall 122 to the end of the second line of weakness 172, or alternatively, the second line of weakness 172 may extend across the first end wall 122 to the end of the first line of weakness 161 at an edge or side wall of the first end wall 122. The first and second lines of weakness 161, 172 may be integrally formed such that they form one continuous line of weakness. For clarity, the third and fourth flaps 127, 128 form part of portion 140 but have been omitted from the view of portion 140 shown in FIG. 19 simply to show portion 140 comprising first flap 125 of first end wall 122, portion 162 of first side wall 131, and first portion 173 of second flap 126 of first end wall 122.

[0186] 20 and 21, there is shown another embodiment of an inner container 190 according to the present invention. The inner container 190 shown in Figures 16 and 17 is generally similar to the embodiments of the inner containers 120, 150, 160 described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein. Furthermore, features and components of the inner container 190 that are the same as features and components of the inner containers 120, 150, 160 retain the same terminology and reference numerals.

[0187] 20, the first line of weakness 161 extends across the first side wall 131 of the inner container 190 and at least partially across the third and fourth side walls 133, 134. Thus, the portion 140 separable from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 includes the first portion 173 of the first and second flaps 125, 126 of the first end wall 122, a portion 162 of the first side wall 131, at least a portion 191 of the third side wall 133, and at least a portion 192 of the fourth side wall 134, as shown in FIG.

[0188] In FIG. 20, similar to that described above, the third side wall 133 includes an outer flap 193 and an inner flap 194 that are sealed together to form a side seal. The side seal is preferably formed by an adhesive, as will be described in more detail below. Also, similar to that described above, in FIG. 20, the fourth side wall 134 includes an outer flap 195 and an inner flap 196 that are also sealed together to form a side seal. The side seal is preferably formed by an adhesive, as will be described in more detail below. In some embodiments, the first line of weakness 161 is configured to extend across the third and fourth side walls 133, 134 such that portions 191, 192 of the third and fourth side walls 133, 134 of the portion 140 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 include an outer flap 193 of the third side wall 133 and an outer flap 195 of the fourth side wall 134.

[0189] In other embodiments, the first weakened line 161 is configured to extend across the third and fourth side walls 133, 134 such that portions 191, 192 of the third and fourth side walls 133, 134 of the portion 140 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the wrapper 7 comprise at least a portion of the outer flap 193 and inner flap 194 of the third side wall 133 and at least a portion of the outer flap 195 and inner flap 196 of the fourth side wall 134.

[0190] In this embodiment, the first line of weakness 161 extending through the first side wall 133 extends parallel to but spaced from the first edge 135a of the inner container 190. Additionally, the first line of weakness 161 extending through the third and fourth side walls 133, 134 also extends parallel to the third and fourth edges 137a, 138a of the inner container 190. Thus, the line of weakness 161 may be generally straight. This is particularly true when the line of weakness 161 is formed in a sheet or blank of material that forms the wrapper 7 before the inner pack is formed. Straight lines of weakness 161 are advantageous as they are easier to machine. In this embodiment, the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 190 can be removed by separating it from the remaining portion 141 along the weakened lines 161, and optionally the side seals between the outer flap 193 and the inner flap 194 of the third side wall 133 and between the outer flap 195 and the inner flap 96 of the fourth side wall 134, as well as the top seal formed by the adhesive 129, can be removed.

[0191] Referring now to Figure 22, there is shown another embodiment of an inner pack 200 according to the present invention. The inner container 200 shown in Figure 22 is generally similar to the embodiments of the inner containers 120, 150, 160, 190 described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein. Furthermore, features and components of the inner pack 100 that are the same as features and components of the inner packs 120, 150, 160, 190 retain the same terminology and reference numerals.

[0192] In this embodiment, the first line of weakness 161 extends around each of the plurality of side walls 131, 132, 133, 134. That is, the first line of weakness 161 extends through the first side wall 131, the second side wall 132, the third side wall 133, and the fourth side wall 134. Thus, the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 that is separable from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 200 comprises the first end wall 122 and each of the side walls 131, 132, 133, 134. In this embodiment, the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 can be removed without peeling the seal formed by the adhesive 129. Thus, the adhesive used may be a non-peelable adhesive to ensure that the line of weakness 161 is broken, rather than the seal formed by the adhesive 129. In one embodiment, the first lines of weakness 161, as they extend through each of the side walls 131, 132, 133, 134, extend parallel to but spaced from the respective edges 135a, 136a, 137a, 138a.

[0193] Referring now to Figure 23, there is shown another embodiment of an inner container 210 according to the present invention. The inner container 220 shown in Figure 23 is generally similar to the inner container embodiment described above, and therefore will not be described in detail herein. Furthermore, features and components of the inner container 220 that are the same as those of the inner package 120 retain the same terminology and reference numerals.

[0194] The inner container 220 is configured to be placed within the outer container 2 to provide access to the inner container 220. The inner container 220 comprises a wrapper 7 configured to form the inner pack 120. The inner pack 120 further comprises a tear strip 221 configured such that, in use, pulling the tear strip 221 can at least partially separate a portion 140 of the wrapper 7 from a remaining portion 141 of the inner container 220 to provide access to an interior thereof.

[0195] 23, the inner container 220 is shown in an assembled state. The inner container 220 comprises a first end wall 122 and a second end wall 123. The first and second end walls 122, 123 are separated by a plurality of side walls 131, 132, 133, 134. A tear strip 221 extends along at least one of the plurality of side walls 131, 132, 133, 134. The tear strip 221 preferably extends across each of the plurality of side walls 131, 132, 133, 134 such that the portion 140 of the wrapper 7 is fully separable from the remaining portion 141 of the inner container 220.

[0196] The tear strip 221 extends parallel to the top edges 135a, 136a, 137a, 138a of the inner container 220 at each of the side walls 131, 132, 133, 134 along which the tear strip 221 extends. Additionally, the tear strip 221 may include a tab 227 at one end 228 of the tear strip 221 that is configured such that, in use, a user can grasp the tab 227 and pull the tear strip 221 to access the interior of the inner container 220. The tear strip 221 may be formed by parallel lines of weakness that extend around at least one of the side walls 131, 132, 133, 134.

[0197] Similar to the inner container described above, the inner container 220 is sealed. That is, the first end wall 122 of the inner container 220 includes a first flap 125 and a second flap 126 extending from opposing edges 135a, 136a of the first end wall 122 and secured together. The first flap 125 and the second flap 126 of the first end wall 122 are secured together by an adhesive 129. In this embodiment shown in FIG. 23, the tear strip 221 is disposed adjacent to the first end wall 122. Furthermore, in this embodiment shown in FIG. 23, the first end wall 122 of the inner container 220 is disposed adjacent to the lid 4 of the outer container 2.
