Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol delivery device, an aerosol delivery system, and a method for generating an aerosol. [Background technology]
[0002] Smoking articles, such as cigarettes and cigars, burn tobacco during use to produce tobacco smoke. Attempts have been made to provide an alternative to these articles by creating products that release compounds without combustion. Examples of such products include so-called "heat-not-burn" products, which release compounds by heating a material rather than burning it, or tobacco heating devices or products. The material may be, for example, tobacco or other non-tobacco products, and may or may not contain nicotine.
[0003] Aerosol delivery systems are known that cover the above mentioned devices and products. In a typical system, a heater is used to generate an aerosol from a suitable medium, which is then inhaled by a user. In many cases, it is necessary to exchange or change the medium used to provide a different aerosol for inhalation. It is known to use an induction heating system as a heater for generating an aerosol from a suitable medium. An induction heating system generally consists of a magnetic field generating device for generating a fluctuating magnetic field, and a susceptor or heating material that can be heated by penetration by the fluctuating magnetic field to heat the suitable medium.

[0054] Various embodiments will now be described in more detail.
[0055] According to various embodiments, an aerosol delivery device is provided that may be configured to be rechargeable by a charging unit.
[0056] FIG. 1 shows the aerosol delivery device 100 positioned in an elongated cavity of a charging unit 101 according to the illustrated embodiment. The charging unit 101 may comprise a power source (not shown). The power source may include, for example, a battery (disposable or rechargeable), a rechargeable supercapacitor, a rechargeable solid-state battery (SSB), or a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (LiB), a hermetically sealed battery, a pouch cell battery, or any combination thereof. Although the aerosol delivery device 100 is shown in combination with the charging unit 101, it will be understood that the aerosol delivery device 100 may be powered by any other means. For example, the power source provided with the aerosol delivery device 100 may be charged by plugging a power source into the aerosol delivery device 100, or the power source may be replaceable, for example in the form of a replaceable battery.
[0057] As described in more detail below, according to various embodiments, the aerosol delivery device 100 may include a power source, which may include a pouch cell. The pouch cell may include a lithium ion battery disposed in a plastic outer housing.
[0058] The aerosol delivery device 100 may be left in the charging unit 101 for a predetermined period of time to allow for sufficient charging of the aerosol delivery device 100. For example, the charging unit 101 may be configured to charge the aerosol delivery device 100 to full charge in a period of <10 minutes, 10-20 minutes, 20-30 minutes, 30-40 minutes, 40-50 minutes, 50-60 minutes, or >60 minutes.
[0059] The charging unit 101 and / or the aerosol delivery device 100 may optionally have an indicator to provide a user with a visual or other representation of the charge level of the aerosol delivery device 100. Additionally, there may be a separate indicator that provides a visual representation of the charge level of the charging unit 101. The current charge level of the aerosol delivery device 100 and / or the charging unit 101 may be determined by control means disposed in the aerosol delivery device 100 and / or the charging unit 101.
[0060] The visual indicator may comprise one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs). However, other embodiments are contemplated in which the visual indicator may be replaced with an audio indicator (e.g., a speaker) or a tactile indicator.
[0061] The aerosol delivery device 100 may include an outer housing that may have a tubular and / or cylindrical shape. However, other embodiments are envisioned in which the aerosol delivery device 100 may take other desired shapes, for example, the aerosol delivery device 100 may be box-shaped. According to one embodiment, the outer housing of the aerosol delivery device 100 may include an electrical insulator, for example, formed of polyetheretherketone ("PEEK").
[0062] According to one embodiment, the distal end of the aerosol supply device 100 may include one or more orientation features and / or one or more magnets for securing the distal end of the aerosol supply device 100 to a base portion of the charging unit 101.
[0063] The aerosol delivery device 100 may be inserted into a cavity of the charging unit 101 to recharge the aerosol delivery device 100 by receiving power from the charging unit 101. The charging unit 101 may include an internal battery for providing power to the aerosol delivery device 100. The charging unit 101 may also be connected to an external source of power.
[0064] The charging unit 101 may include a lid or cover 102 that may be slid by a user between an open position and a closed position. The lid or cover 102 is provided within the charging unit 101 and is provided at an entrance to a cavity configured to receive the aerosol delivery device 100.
[0065] The aerosol delivery apparatus 100 includes an aerosol generator for generating an aerosol from an aerosol-generating material. However, other embodiments are contemplated in which the aerosol delivery apparatus 100 may include an inductive heating unit.
[0066] When the lid or cover 102 is in the open position, an opening to the cavity is exposed, thereby allowing a user to either remove the aerosol supply device 100 from the charging unit 101 (to use the aerosol supply device 100) or insert the aerosol supply device 100 into the charging unit 101 (to charge the aerosol supply device 100).
[0067] 2 shows a cross-sectional view of an aerosol delivery device 100 according to one embodiment. The aerosol delivery device 100 includes a heating element 206 for heating the aerosol product. The heating element 206 may comprise a resistive heating element.
[0068] The aerosol delivery device 100 comprises a main housing 105 and an outer housing 107. The main housing 105 comprises a tubular wall extending from an end of the outer housing 107. A resistive heating element 106 protrudes into the main housing 105. The aerosol delivery device 100 further comprises a removable cap 106 that may be magnetically held to the main housing 105. In embodiments, the removable cap 106 may be removably held to the main housing 105 by a push fit, clips, or other means such as threads.
[0069] The aerosol delivery device 100 includes an electronic control circuit 104. The electronic control circuit 104 is disposed within an outer housing 107. The electronic control circuit 104 can be configured to control the heating element 206. The electronic control circuit 104 can include a printed circuit board.
[0070] As shown in FIG. 2, the removable cap 106 includes a receptacle 120 for receiving a consumable or aerosol product. In use, the aerosol product is inserted into the receptacle 120. The removable cap 106 also includes an outer casing 109. The outer casing is joined to the receptacle 120. The outer casing 109 is positioned to fit at least partially over the main housing 105. In use, the main housing 105 is partially received between the outer casing 109 and the receptacle 120. The receptacle 120 and the outer casing 109 may comprise a single component. In other embodiments, the receptacle 120 and the outer casing 109 may comprise separate components permanently joined to one another, for example by adhesive or welding. In other embodiments, the receptacle 120 and the outer casing 109 may be separable.
[0071] The receptacle 120 may include a tubular housing 121 and a base portion 122. The base portion 122 of the receptacle 120 includes an opening 123 through which the resistive heating element 206 is positioned to protrude.
[0072] A space is defined between the outer casing 109 and the receptacle 120 through which air flows during use. In other embodiments, openings may be provided in the outer casing 109 or the receptacle 120 to provide for air flow.
[0073] An air flow channel 128 is defined between the receptacle 120 and the main housing 105. The opening 123 in the base portion 122 communicates with the air flow channel 128.
[0074] The aerosol product may be inserted into the aerosol delivery device 100 by inserting it through the opening 103 in the removable cap 106 and then inserting the aerosol product into the receptacle 120 and over the heating element 206.
[0075] The heating element 206 may have a blade-like profile and, in use, the aerosol product article may be pressed onto the heating element 206 such that the blade-like profile of the heating element 206 is inserted into a distal end of the aerosol product article. The heating element 206 may be configured to internally heat the aerosol product article.
[0076] In use, an end of the aerosol product article protrudes from the aerosol delivery device 100. A user inhales on the end of the aerosol product article and air flows along and into the air flow channel 128, out the opening 123 in the base portion 122 and into the other end of the aerosol product article.
[0077] At the end of a usage session, when the aerosol product article has been depleted, the removable cap 106 may be removed from the main housing 105. It will be appreciated that the process of removing the removable cap 106 has the effect of causing the base portion 122 of the receptacle 120 to contact a bottom surface of the aerosol product article. As the removable cap 106 is pulled out, the base portion 122 of the receptacle 120 contacts a distal end of the aerosol product article, and the aerosol product article is pulled away or otherwise removed from the heating element 206.
[0078] The aerosol delivery device 100 includes a power source 170. The power source 170 is disposed within the outer housing 107. The power source 170 is a pouch cell. The pouch cell includes an outer housing, the outer housing includes a plastic. The plastic includes a polyamide or a polyester.
[0079] The pouch cell includes a lithium ion battery 170. The lithium ion battery 170 includes a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The positive electrode includes an intercalated lithium compound and the negative electrode includes graphite.
[0080] The power source 170 may be disposed within a hermetically sealed chamber 180. The chamber 180 may comprise a compartment within the housing 107. The chamber 180 may be provided as a wrap around the power source 170 or may be a rigid casing. The chamber 180 may be defined by an assembly of multiple components joined together to form an airtight seal. The chamber 180 may be at least partially defined by the housing 107. Other components, such as electronic components, may be disposed within the chamber 180. One or more thermally conductive tracks 192 extend from the power source 170 to the outside of the hermetically sealed chamber 180.
[0081] The power source 170 is electrically connected to the aerosol generator. In this embodiment, the power source 170 is electrically connected to the resistive heating element 206 to provide electrical power to heat the heating element 206.
[0082] Providing a lithium ion battery is desirable since it can store enough power for more than one usage session of the aerosol delivery device 100. The use of a pouch cell is beneficial since it can reduce the weight of the power source 170 compared to a conventional battery.
[0083] The performance of batteries, particularly lithium ion batteries, is sensitive to temperature. Therefore, it is desirable to maintain power source 170 at a desired operating temperature to improve performance and avoid damage to power source 170. Power source 170 generates heat when charging and discharging. Therefore, it may be desirable to cool power source 170 to maintain a desired operating temperature.
[0084] Pouch cells may contain approximately 90% active material by weight, compared to approximately 60% active material by weight in other battery types. This makes passive cooling of pouch cells less efficient because there is a smaller amount of inactive mass in the battery pack to act as a heat sink. According to various embodiments, the pouch cell includes a polymer pouch that encases the active material of the cell. The polymer pouch can act as a thermal insulator.
[0085] Embodiments are disclosed that relate to diverting thermal energy away from power source 170 to maintain a desired operating temperature.
[0086] According to an embodiment, a heat dissipation device 190 may be provided. The heat dissipation device 190 may comprise one or more heat conductive tracks 192. The one or more heat conductive tracks 192 may be formed of a thermally conductive material, such as a metallic material. The one or more heat conductive tracks 192 may comprise an integral component or an assembly of two or more components. The one or more heat conductive tracks are in contact with a power source 170, which may comprise a pouch cell. A void may be defined within the pouch cell 170, and the one or more heat conductive tracks 192 may be disposed within the void. This provides for a more efficient transfer of heat from the pouch cell 170 to the one or more heat conductive tracks 192.
[0087] One or more heat conductive tracks 192 may extend from the power source 170 to the air flow channel 128. In this embodiment, the heat conductive track 192 comprises the main housing 105.
[0088] The heat dissipation device 190 comprises a heat dissipation formation 194. The heat dissipation formation 194 is disposed within or adjacent to the air flow channel 128. The heat dissipation formation 194 is configured to conduct heat from the heat conducting track 192 to air passing through the air flow channel 128. According to an embodiment, the heat dissipation formation 194 may be provided by at least a portion of the main housing 105. The heat dissipation formation 194 may partially define the air flow channel 128. In an embodiment, the heat dissipation formation 194 may have substantially any shape. The heat dissipation formation 194 may comprise a coating on a surface of the air flow channel 128.
[0089] In use, the heat conduction channel conducts thermal energy from the power source 170 to the air flow channel 128, optionally in contact with the heat dissipation feature 194. Thus, thermal energy is transferred from the power source 170 to the air in the air flow channel 128, and the air is then drawn from the aerosol delivery device 100. As a result, the power source 170 may be cooled.
[0090] It will therefore be apparent that an aerosol supply device 100 including a heat dissipation device 190 as detailed above would be beneficial, particularly when the aerosol supply device 100 includes a pouch cell 170 and it is desirable to maintain the pouch cell 170 at a desired operating temperature.
[0091] 3 shows another embodiment of the aerosol supply device 100. The aerosol supply device 100 shown in FIG. 3 is similar to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2. According to this embodiment, the heat dissipation formation further comprises a plurality of ribs 194' attached to the main housing 105. The ribs 194' protrude into the air flow channel 128. This increases the surface area of the heat dissipation formation 194 in contact with the air in the air flow channel 128, thereby increasing the efficiency of heat transfer from the one or more heat conducting tracks 192.
[0092] An opening 103 is provided in the removable cap 106 that may provide access to a heating zone 208. The removable cap 106 includes an outer casing 109.
[0093] Power source 170 is disposed within a hermetically sealed chamber 180. Chamber 180 is a compartment within housing 107. Aerosol delivery device 100 includes electronic control circuitry 104. Electronic control circuitry 104 is disposed within the outer housing. Electronic control circuitry 104 can be configured to control heating element 206. Electronic control circuitry 104 may include a printed circuit board.
[0094] The aerosol delivery device 100 may further include a plurality of openings 124 in communication with the air flow channel 128. The openings 124 may be provided in the removable cap 106. The openings 124 may be provided in the tubular housing 121 of the receptacle 120 of the removable cap 106. The openings 124 may be located closer to the proximal end of the removable cap 106. That is, the openings 124 are located closer to the end of the aerosol delivery device 100 that is inhaled by the user.
[0095] The aerosol delivery device 100 includes a receptacle 120, which may include a tubular housing 121 and a base portion 122. The base portion 122 of the receptacle 120 includes an opening 123 through which the resistive heating element 206 is positioned to protrude.
[0096] According to one embodiment, a heat dissipation device 190 may be provided. The heat dissipation device 190 may comprise one or more heat conductive tracks 192. The one or more heat conductive tracks 192 may be formed of a thermally conductive material, such as a metallic material. The one or more heat conductive tracks 192 extend from the pouch cell 170 to a portion of the main housing 105.
[0097] 4 illustrates another embodiment of the aerosol delivery apparatus 100. The heating element in this embodiment comprises a susceptor 206' in an inductive heating arrangement. The inductive heating arrangement comprises an inductor coil 204. The susceptor 206' may comprise a tubular member. The susceptor 206' may define a heating zone 208. In use, an aerosol product article is inserted into the heating zone 208.
[0098] The power source 170 is disposed within a hermetically sealed chamber 180. The chamber 180 may comprise a compartment within an outer housing. The chamber 180 may be provided as a wrap around the power source 170 or may be a rigid casing. The chamber 180 may be defined by an assembly of multiple components joined together to form an airtight seal. Other components, such as electronic components, may be disposed within the chamber 180. A thermally conductive track 192 extends from the power source 170 to the outside of the hermetically sealed chamber 180.
[0099] A heat dissipation device 190 may be provided that includes a heat dissipation formation 194 .
