Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to the preparation of shelf-stable personal care compositions containing sulfur. [Background technology]

[0002] Traditionally, large hydrophobic particulates actively attempt to separate from the aqueous personal care composition environment by either gravity separation and / or hydrophobic repulsion from the aqueous environment itself. To achieve shelf stability, personal care compositions containing such particles typically add them at very low concentrations (<0.1%) to minimize these effects by increasing product rheology (>20,000 cPs at 2s^-1) and "sticking" the particulates in place, and / or create trade-offs, which can lead to inhomogeneity in the final formulation without excessive mixing, which itself can create instability. Such design and manufacturing techniques can create undesirable manufacturing conditions, such as manufacturing conditions that are too thick to dispense or too expensive to process, and when using sulfur particulates (D50-30um) to treat dandruff, these trade-offs are simply not acceptable and the product shelf life is undistributable, thereby making these classical techniques unsuitable for their construction and requiring improvement. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0003] The present invention has found an operating sequence that prioritizes the formulation's yield stress building by including a stability promoter early before sulfur addition, and a separate mixing speed (as defined by tip speed) and then a separate recirculation speed (as defined by turnover) (a balance between homogenization and stabilization) has resulted in the production of a shelf-stable sulfur-containing anti-dandruff shampoo. The degree to which this control is maintained is unexpected given the similarity of the materials to other anti-dandruff shampoos that use different anti-dandruff actives but have other similar compositions that do not require these considerations. The benefits of each of these conditions can be demonstrated in the present invention. [Means for solving the problem]

[0004] The present invention relates to a method for preparing a personal care composition comprising sulfur, the method comprising the steps of: a) providing a composition comprising a surfactant, a stabilizer, and water, the composition comprising at least about 3.0% surfactant and sufficient stabilizer to build up a yield stress of at least 0.06 Pa; and b) mixing the composition in step (a), the agitator tip speed being between about 1.5 m / s and about 2.7 m / s with a recirculation turnover rate of greater than 1.8 turnovers / hour, the agitator tip speed being greater than {agitator circumference [m / revolutions]}. * {agitator rotation speed [rev / s]} and the recirculation turnover rate is calculated by {recirculation pump speed [L / hr]} / {total turnover volume [L / turnover]}; and c) adding sulfur to the composition of step (b), maintaining the conditions of step (b) during the addition of sulfur and until the personal care composition is prepared. [0082] Traditionally, glyceride ester compounds can be used as structuring agents in personal care compositions. For example, Thixcin® R is a trihydroxystearin, a commercially available hydrogenated castor oil manufactured by Elementis Specialty (New Jersey) and marketed as a stabilizer and structuring agent for personal care compositions.Suitable glyceride esters for the personal care compositions described herein can be selected from any crystalline glyceride ester that allows the formation of coacervates in personal care compositions that include suitable surfactants and cationic polymers. For example, a suitable glyceride ester is hydrogenated castor oil (such as trihydroxystearin or dihydroxystearin).

[0083] Examples of additional crystalline glyceride esters may include substantially pure triglyceride of 12-hydroxystearic acid.12-hydroxystearic acid is the pure form of triglyceride of 12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid that is completely hydrogenated. As can be understood, many additional glyceride esters are possible. For example, changes in hydrogenation process and natural changes in castor oil may allow the production of additional suitable glyceride esters from castor oil.

[0084] Suitable glyceride esters can also be formed from a mixture of one or more glycerides. For example, a mixture of glycerides containing about 80% or more of castor oil by weight of the mixture can be suitable. Other suitable mixtures can include a mixture of only triglycerides, a mixture of diglycerides and triglycerides, a mixture of triglycerides, diglycerides, and monoglycerides in limited amounts, such as less than about 20% by weight of the mixture, or any mixture thereof containing no more than about 20% by weight of the mixture of the corresponding acid hydrolysis products of any of the glycerides. About 80% or more by weight of the mixture can be chemically identical to the glyceride of fully hydrogenated ricinoleic acid, i.e., the glyceride of 12-hydroxystearic acid. Hydrogenated castor oil can be modified so that in a given triglyceride, there are two 12-hydroxystearin moieties and one stearin moiety. Alternatively, partial hydrogenation can be used. However, poly(oxyalkylated) castor oil is not preferred because it has an unfavorable melting point.

[0085] Castor oil includes glycerides, particularly triglycerides, that contain C10-C22 alkyl or alkenyl moieties with hydroxy groups. Hydrogenation of castor oil produces hydrogenated castor oil by conversion of double bonds present in the starting oil as ricinoleyl moieties. These moieties are converted to ricinoleyl moieties, which are saturated hydroxyalkyl moieties, e.g., hydroxystearyl. Hydrogenated castor oil (HCO) herein may be selected from trihydroxystearin, dihydroxystearin, and mixtures thereof. HCO can be processed in any suitable starting form, including, but not limited to, selected from solids, melts, and mixtures thereof. Useful HCO can have the following properties: a melting point of about 40° C. to about 100° C., alternatively about 65° C. to about 95° C., and / or an iodine value ranging from about 0 to about 5, alternatively about 0 to about 4, alternatively about 0 to about 2.6. The melting point of HCO can be measured using DSC: Differential Scanning Calorimetry.

[0086] Suitable HCOs include those available commercially. Non-limiting examples of commercially available HCOs suitable for use include THIXCIN-R® (supplied by Elementis), which is supplied as a powder having small particles (99% by weight smaller than 44 μm).

[0087] The present invention is not intended to be limited to the use of hydrogenated castor oil. Any other suitable crystallizable glycerides may be used. In one example, the structurant is a nearly pure triglyceride of 12-hydroxystearic acid. This molecule represents the pure form of the triglyceride of 12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid, which is fully hydrogenated. In nature, the composition of castor oil may vary to some extent. Similarly, the method of hydrogenation may vary. Any other suitable equivalent material may be used, such as a mixture of triglycerides, of which at least about 80% by weight is derived from castor oil. Exemplary equivalent materials comprise primarily or consist of triglycerides; or comprise primarily or consist of mixtures of diglycerides and triglycerides; or comprise primarily or consist of mixtures of triglycerides and diglycerides and limited amounts of monoglycerides, e.g., less than about 20% by weight of the mixture of glycerides; or comprise primarily or consist of any of the foregoing glycerides and limited amounts, e.g., less than about 20% by weight of the corresponding acid hydrolysis products of any of the foregoing glycerides.

Conventionally, the diameter may be marked on the device or provided in the specifications for the equipment or device. The rotation speed is part of the operating conditions of the equipment or device and how its operation is managed. A non-limiting example may be a mixer with a knob that can be used to set the speed, and the set speed is the RPM, which is what is actually being manipulated to run the equipment.

[0108] The recirculation turnover rate can be calculated conventionally by the formula: {recirculation pump rate [L / hour]} / {total turnover volume [L / turnover]}. The pump rate can be measured by using an instrument or device to measure the rate. A non-limiting example would be to use a flow meter in the pump line path. The turnover volume can be the total volume of the personal care composition. A non-limiting example would be to make a 50L batch, in which case the total volume would be 50L.

[0109] Yield stress table and yield stress measurement method To perform these measurements, we use a TA DHR3 rheometer equipped with a cone and plate geometry.

[0110] A solvent trap is added to prevent sample evaporation during the measurement, which uses a cone and plate geometry, runs up to 40° C., and lasts for approximately 30 minutes. Test 1 - Flow curve at 25°C: A steady-state flow curve in strain-controlled mode starting from 100 1 / s to 0.01 1 / s was performed at a fixed temperature of 25°C. To measure the dynamic yield stress, the shear rate is controlled and chosen to start at high shear. This measurement protocol minimizes the effect of sample thixotropy that can cause variability in the measurement of yield stress based on the shear history of the sample. The total time for this test is approximately 8 minutes. Test 2 - Temperature ramp: The shear rate was fixed at 2 s-1 and the temperature ramped from 25°C to 40°C. The shear rate of 2 s-1 was chosen to capture the low shear plateau of the worm like micellar microstructures present in the transparent phase. The total duration of this test was approximately 8 min. Test 3 - Flow curve at 40° C.: A steady-state flow curve in strain-controlled mode from 100 1 / s to 0.01 1 / s was performed at a fixed temperature of 40° C. The total time for this step is about 8 minutes.

[0111] The total time for the entire procedure, including sample loading, is approximately 30 min.

[0118] 1) Build yield stress before sulfur addition (by adding particulate stabilizers). If sufficient yield stress is not built up before sulfur introduction, the sulfur will tend to settle out of the batch during mixing. This will manifest as low sulfur yields in the final product and large amounts of unincorporated sulfur residue in the production tank.

[0119] Figure 3 shows two photographs showing examples of untrapped sulfur remaining in the tank.

[0120] In the present invention, a composition including a surfactant, a stabilizer, and water may be provided, prior to sulfur addition, the composition including at least about 3.0% surfactant and sufficient stabilizer to build up a yield stress of at least 0.06 Pa.

[0121] Table 1. Sulfur yield vs. order of addition This table demonstrates the expected sulfur yields for different addition orders.

[0122] [Table 1]

[0123] 2) With tank recirculation, the agitator tip speed at the time of sulfur addition and thereafter (after yield stress has been built) is greater than about 1.5 m / s and less than about 2.7 m / s. As demonstrated in Example 5 below, mixing speed is too fast and large amounts of air are entrapped in the formulation, causing low as-made specific gravity (SG<0.98) in the final product, and subsequently causing irrecoverable phase separation in the final product regardless of final yield. b. As demonstrated in Example 4 below, if the rate is too low, even if there is sufficient yield stress in the system, the sulfur may not be suspended, resulting in low sulfur yield and / or final product phase separation.

[0124] Examples of processing using conventional methods: 1.) General Processing Techniques for Personal Care Compositions a. Uncontrolled or under-controlled mixing speeds - resulting in inhomogeneity and / or low sulfur yields b. Uncontrolled or under-controlled recycle and recycle rate - resulting in low sulfur yields 2.) General Processing Techniques for Microparticle-Containing Personal Care Compositions a. Addition order of stabilizers to fine particles not taken into consideration - resulting in inhomogeneity due to excessive mixing b. Methods of adding microparticles via premixes, where the premix does not contain stabilizers - leading to inhomogeneity in the premix, often accompanied by a reduction in the microparticle yield in the final product

[0125] result Table 2. The following examples demonstrate data generated when sulfur is added in the process of making a personal care composition, where the sulfur is added either before or after the stabilizer and various agitator tip speeds.

[0126] [Table 2] This data in Table 2 demonstrates that with the proper sequence of sulfur addition and agitator tip speed, personal care compositions exhibit adequate yield and stability.

[0127] Preparation of Personal Care Compositions The personal care composition is prepared directly from the premix or as an in-line process. When prepared by premix, the composition is prepared by adding the surfactant, antidandruff agent, stabilizer (as defined above) and the remainder as water in a specific order with stirring and recirculation as defined in claim 1. The premix is then mixed with the fragrance, viscosity modifier, cationic polymer and the remaining water with sufficient stirring to ensure a homogenous and shelf stable mixture.

[0128] When performed as an in-line process, the personal care composition is prepared by adding surfactants, antidandruff agents, stabilizers (as defined above), fragrance, viscosity modifiers, cationic polymer, and the remaining water in the order as defined in claim 1 with stirring and recirculation to ensure a homogenous and shelf-stable mixture. In either case, the mixture can be heated to 50-75°C to accelerate solubilization of the soluble agents, and then cooled. Product pH may be adjusted as necessary to provide a shampoo composition of the present invention suitable for application to human hair and scalp, and may vary from about pH 4-9, or from about pH 4.5-6.5, or from about pH 5-6, based on the selection of the particular cleansing surfactant, and / or other ingredients.
