Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to labeling and tracking workpieces, and more particularly, to systems, methods, and apparatus for labeling and tracking laboratory samples.
[0002] 2. Description of Related Art Samples in a laboratory environment are labeled and tracked to maintain sample integrity and traceability during various procedures, including reagent aliquoting, mixing, experimentation, dilution, and storage of reagents in designated locations under appropriate environmental conditions. Accurate sample labeling can improve the reliability of experimental results. [Background technology]
[0003] Traditionally, labeling of laboratory samples has been done manually using handwritten or pre-printed labels that are affixed to the samples. Manually tracking and managing these details can be time-consuming and error-prone, especially as the number of samples increases. This method is labor-intensive and time-consuming, which can negatively impact the efficiency of laboratory workflow.
[0004] To address this, various laboratory labeling systems have been developed to automate and streamline the process of managing, tracking, and storing samples. Such systems typically involve the use of labels that are attached to samples and contain information such as a unique identifier, the name of the sample, and any relevant details. Such systems typically involve the use of specialized software and hardware to create, track, and print labels for samples, as well as to store and manage information about the samples. By automating the labeling process, such systems can help reduce errors, improve efficiency, and enhance sample traceability and integrity. This is particularly important in regulated industries such as pharmaceutical and food production, where sample traceability is used to ensure product quality and safety.
[0005] The labeling system may also improve the organization and management of samples within a laboratory. By providing a centralized digital record of all samples and their associated information, the labeling system may make it easier to locate and track samples and keep track of expiration dates and other important details. Thus, the labeling system may help improve the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of laboratory workflow by automating the labeling process and maintaining a comprehensive record of samples. [0037] In other embodiments, the description of the 2D barcode 156, including the claims, may be implemented by an RFID tag or an NFC tag, whether active or passive. The tag may be used instead of the 2D barcode 156, may be used in addition to the 2D barcode, may be incorporated in a single adhesive together with the 2D barcode 156, etc. The information stored in the RFID tag or NFC tag may be the same as the information stored in the 2D barcode 156, and in further embodiments the information stored in the RFID tag may include the same information as stored in the 2D barcode 156 along with other information, such as historical information or more detailed information.
[0038] The cloud service provider 102 provides a workflow management component 112, which may be or may include a web page, web app, or program for downloading and execution on the computer 104 or mobile device 106. The workflow management component 112 facilitates tracking, managing, and printing labels 152 for samples for use in a laboratory environment. The types of workflows managed may include, for example, workflows focused on academic and / or biopharmaceutical researchers in the cell culture, analytical, and molecular research areas. For example, the workflow management component 112 may instruct the printer 150 to print a two-dimensional barcode 156 on the label 152, which may be affixed to the sample 154 for tracking. The two-dimensional barcode 156 may be scanned by the scanner 140 to identify and / or obtain data embedded within the two-dimensional barcode 156.
[0039] More specifically, the label 152 may include a two-dimensional barcode 156 configured to incorporate information therein to facilitate tracking of the sample 154. The two-dimensional barcode 156 may store data corresponding to the sample 154 in plain text using a widely recognized two-dimensional barcode format. In certain embodiments, any device capable of reading the two-dimensional barcode 156 may determine any history, tracking, or other data parameters associated with the sample 152 by reading the information in plain text using any text viewer (e.g., an ASCII viewer). The two-dimensional barcode 156 may utilize formats such as DataMatrix, QR Code®, PDF417, etc., which include both horizontal and vertical aspects for increased data storage capabilities over one-dimensional barcodes. Globally harmonized GS1-type two-dimensional barcode (e.g., GS1 QR, GS1 DataMatrix) formats may be used to store data in the two-dimensional barcode 156 in a standardized format for inventory management purposes and streamlining product information.
[0040] Using the two-dimensional barcode 152, a user may track a laboratory sample 154 through its scientific workflow, maintain sample 154 information through procedures such as reagent aliquoting, sample history, mixing and reacting for an experiment, tracking expiration dates, performing dilutions, and storing reagents in specific locations, among other procedures related to sample 154 management. The workflow management component 112 may guide a laboratory user on how best to utilize the two-dimensional barcode 156 specifically for its particular application and workflow. For example, the workflow management component 112 may implement inventory management practices for bulk consumables and reagents. Thus, the workflow management component 112 may be used to track and manage a particular sample 154 within a workflow (e.g., a flask of growing cells, an aliquot of penicillin / streptomycin, an in-house made buffer, a serial dilution of a drug, a digestion reaction in a microplastic beaker, etc.).
[0041] The workflow management component 112 includes a printer interface component 114 , a two-dimensional barcode reader component 116 , a GUI component 130 , a two-dimensional barcode engine 134 , a label engine 136 , and an operation engine 138 .
[0042] The printer interface component 114 can instruct the printer 150 to print one or more labels 152 configured to be adhesively affixed to one or more samples 154. The printer interface component 114 can include a printer driver, communications capabilities (e.g., a TCP / IP interface), and / or can be a button on a web page that initiates a standardized print function in a web browser.
[0043] The two-dimensional barcode reader component 116 may interpret the data stored in the two-dimensional barcode 156. The two-dimensional barcode reader component 116 uses an algorithm to decode the pattern of the two-dimensional barcode 156 into a data format that is readable by the computer 104, such as text, numeric, or binary data. Additionally or alternatively, the two-dimensional barcode reader component 116 may convert the data from the two-dimensional barcode into a variety of formats, including GS, PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, JSON, CSV, XML, YAML, markup languages, etc.
[0044] The GUI component 130 may provide a display for use by the computer 104 and / or mobile device 106. The GUI component 130 may be a web page-based provider, such as flask, an HTML server, a web framework, etc. The GUI component 130 may provide widgets, information, buttons, options, and menus to facilitate user interaction with the workflow management component 112.
[0045] The 2D barcode engine 134 may generate a 2D barcode 156 having a pattern that encodes data in a format readable by the scanner 140. The 2D barcode engine 134 may output the generated 2D barcode 156 as an image file, a pdf file, or other format suitable for printing on one or more labels 152.
[0046] The label engine 136 may load, store, and save labels 146 in the database 132. For example, the label engine 136 may store, load, or save label formats 142, which are blank file formats that may represent the labels 152 before printing on the label 152. The label engine 136 may export label formats 142 to one or more file formats. The label engine 136 may also create, save, or retrieve templates 144, which are label formats 142 filled in with data entered by a user. Additionally or alternatively, the label engine 136 may save favorites 142, including saving or indicating the label format 142 as a favorite 147 or the template 144 as a favorite 147. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, favorites 147 may apply to operations, menu selections, macros, and the like. For example, a user may press button 332 any time a two-dimensional barcode is present in the GUI to save a filled-in label as a favorite template. The user may also export and / or save a label or template at any time by pressing button 334 which scans the label as it appears on the screen so that the label and / or its data can be exported or saved for use.
[0047] The workflow management component 112 may also include an operation engine 138. The operation engine 138 may control the GUI component 130 and / or direct other components to execute instructions based on a workflow initiated by a user. The operation engine 138 may receive an event, such as a mouse click, a button press, or a GUI widget interaction, to initiate a routine, a series of steps, or a series of operations. For example, the operation engine 138 may guide a user step-by-step on how to implement a particular workflow associated with a sample 154 when performing a certain type of laboratory operation. The operation engine 138 may execute operations from a menu of operations 300 in FIG. 3 , which are described further below.
[0048] Resource dispatcher 110 may send requests to perform operations to one or more virtual servers 122, each having a virtual processor 124, virtual memory 126, and virtual disk space 128. Once sent and enabled by resource dispatcher 110, a virtual server 122 may run on one or more servers 120 on server farm 118.
[0049] The workflow management component 112 may track usage and laboratory operations on the sample 154 by storing the history of the sample 154 as tracking data 148 in the database 132. The tracking data 148 may include chain of title information, chain of control information, dilution history, temperature history, storage history, freezing history, aliquot history, reagent history, reaction history, or other tracking information. In some embodiments, the workflow management component 112 queries the database 132 and presents the data to the user via the GUI component 130. The workflow management component 112 may also store technical or diagnostic information.
[0050] FIG. 2 shows an illustration of a block diagram of a computing device 200 for labeling and tracking laboratory samples 154 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The computing device 200 of FIG. 2 may be the computer 104 or the mobile device 106 of FIG. 1. The computing device 200 includes an I / O interface 210 for internal communication. The computing device 200 includes a data store 204, a processor 206, a network interface 208, a memory 225, and a user I / O device 226. The data store 204 stores data and may be a hard drive, a flash drive, a thumb drive, volatile memory, non-volatile memory, semi-volatile memory, etc. The processor 206 may execute one or more processor-executable instructions 212 that may be stored in the data store 204 and / or the memory 225. For example, the processor 206 may execute the processor-executable instructions 212 stored in the memory 225 that are retrieved from the data store 204. The memory 225 also includes program data 214, which may include information related to the processor-executable instructions 212. The computing device 200 may include user I / O devices 226, such as a cursor device 230 (e.g., a touchscreen or mouse), a keyboard 232 (virtual or physical), and / or a monitor 228 (which may be a touchscreen). The computing device 200 communicates with a network 202 via a network interface 208.
[0051] Although computing device 200 of FIG. 2 may be used as part of system 100 of FIG. 1, in some embodiments, label and tracking functionality may reside entirely within computing device 200 of FIG. 2. For example, workflow management component 112 of FIG. 1 may reside within processor-executable instructions 212 of FIG. 2 as workflow management component 215. For example, printer interface component 216, two-dimensional barcode reader component 218, GUI component 220, two-dimensional barcode engine 222, label engine 223, and operation 234 of FIG. 2 may have the same or similar functionality as printer interface component 114, two-dimensional barcode reader component 116, GUI component 130, two-dimensional barcode engine 134, label engine 136, and operation engine 139 of FIG. 1, respectively. Database 236 may be similar to database 132 of FIG. 1. Database 236 may be, for example, an SQLite3 database embedded in computing device 200.
[0052] Thus, in some embodiments, the workflow management component 112, 215 may reside entirely on a local device (e.g., computer 104, device 106, printer 150, etc.), may be partially within the cloud service provider 102, and / or may be organized in a hybrid local and cloud configuration. In some embodiments, the workflow management component 215 may be an application and may execute on the computer 104, device 106, printer 150, cloud service provider 102, computing device 200, etc., or some combination thereof.
[0053] Database 236 of Figure 2 may be similar to or identical to database 132 of Figure 1. That is, label formats 238, templates 240, labels 242, favorites 244, and tracking data 243 of Figure 2 may be similar to or identical to label formats 142, templates 144, labels 146, favorites 147, and tracking data 148 of Figure 1, respectively.
[0054] 3 illustrates a block diagram of a menu 300 of actions in a graphical user interface according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The menu 300 of actions includes buttons 302-334. The buttons 302-334 may be menu items, clickable buttons, drop-down buttons, menu hierarchies, conditional buttons, etc. For example, some of the buttons 302-334 may be pre-conditioned upon selecting a previous button and / or performing a previous action (e.g., scanning a barcode without being prompted, etc.).
[0055] 3A-3B may be performed by computing device 200 in response to pressing reagent label creation operation button 302. Process 400 may include presenting a reagent label creation operation for selection by a user (block 402). Thus, button 302 of FIG. 3 may be presented to a user for selection in operation 402. In some embodiments, a user may select a given reagent item, for example, using a SKU#, and automatically enter information to create a new label 152.
[0056] The computing device 200 may offer reagent label creation operations for selection by a user by presenting selection buttons 302 within a menu hierarchy. The process 400 shown in FIG. 4A may include selecting a reagent label creation operation (block 404). For example, a user may use the computing device 200 to click button 302, which then causes the computing device 200 to initiate the process 400. The operation engine 234 may initiate, control, and / or orchestrate the process 400.
[0057] The process 400 may include selecting a label format from a plurality of label formats 238 (block 406). The process 400 may prompt the user with a request for at least one reagent parameter (block 408). For example, a pop-up box may pop up in the GUI to allow the user to input one or more reagent parameters. The process 400 may receive the at least one reagent parameter from, for example, a pop-up dialog (block 410). The process 400 may determine identifying information corresponding to the reagent (block 412). The identifying information may be from the database 236, may be embedded in a two-dimensional barcode from a scanned barcode, or may be entered manually. The process 400 may include embedding the identifying information in the two-dimensional barcode (block 414). This may include generating a two-dimensional barcode by the two-dimensional barcode engine 222, which is then used by the label engine 224 to generate an image of the label 152 suitable for printing by the printer 150.
[0058] As described above, the computing device 200 may incorporate identification information into the two-dimensional barcode 156. The process 400 may include incorporating at least one reagent parameter into the two-dimensional barcode 156 (block 416). The process 400 may include adding a first text string configured to be incorporated into the two-dimensional barcode (block 418). For example, any additional text may be added to the two-dimensional barcode 156 that can be used by a user reading the two-dimensional barcode 156. Operation 420 adds a second text string configured to be readable adjacent to the two-dimensional barcode (block 420). For example, there may be a section on the label 152 for placing raw text on the label 152. Operation 422 prints a reagent label corresponding to the label format, the two-dimensional barcode 156, and the first and second text strings (block 422). The process 400 may include operation 242 of saving data corresponding to the printed reagent label as a template 240 (block 424). The computing device 200 may save the template 240 for later retrieval by a user. Operation 426 stores the at least one reagent parameter, the identifying information, and the first and second text strings in the database 236. The computing device 200 may store the at least one reagent parameter, the identifying information, and the first and second text strings in the internal database 236, or in other embodiments, in the external database 132 (see FIG. 1).
[0059] 4A-4B illustrate example blocks of process 400, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 400 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 4. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 400 may be performed in parallel.
[0060] 3, a user may begin the aliquot process by selecting the label creation button 304. This may enable the manipulation engine 234 to begin the process 500 shown in Figures 5A-5D. The process 500 may be performed by the computing device 200, for example, by the manipulation engine 234 of the computing device 200.
[0061] Aliquot workflows may include labeling incoming reagents, labeling aliquots, and / or the process of "aliquoting," i.e., taking a portion of a larger volume of reagent and placing a smaller volume of reagent in a smaller container (e.g., transferring ten 1 mL aliquots from a 20 mL bottle into ten 2 mL tubes). Aliquots may be used to create single-use reagents and / or avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
[0062] For example, smaller "aliquot" labels from one larger reagent label can be created from a reagent label that the user previously created. For example, these labels can include a two-dimensional barcode 156 containing reagent information that can be automatically transferred to the new smaller aliquot label. The user can select their preferred label format 238 for their reagent and aliquot labels.
[0063] Information related to the aliquots, such as how many aliquots are desired to be made from a reagent, can be entered by a user. Multiple aliquot labels can be printed, each corresponding to an aliquot label 152 configured to facilitate tracking of all aliquots, including how many aliquots remain in inventory. The computing device 200 can notify the user when amounts are getting "low" that a new aliquot should be made and / or more reagent should be ordered.
[0064] 5A-5D, process 500 may include operation 503 of providing an aliquot label creation operation for selection by a user. This may include providing a button 304 for selection by the user. At operation 504, a user may select the aliquot label creation operation. Operation 506 prompts the user with a label scan request. Operation 508 scans an existing label of a reagent in response to the label scan request. For example, a user may use a scanner 140 attached to the computing device 200 to scan an existing label of a reagent in response to the label scan request. Operation 510 identifies the reagent based on identifying information embedded within the existing label. For example, computing device 200 may obtain the identification of the reagent based on identifying information embedded within a two-dimensional barcode 156 of the reagent selected for the aliquot.
[0065] Operation 512 obtains a plurality of reagent parameters corresponding to the existing labels. The reagent parameters may be parameters embedded in the two-dimensional barcode 156 attached to the reagent and / or may be obtained from database 236. Operation 514 selects a label format from a plurality of label formats 238 to correspond to the plurality of aliquot labels. That is, computing device 200 may select label format 238 from a number of label formats configured to facilitate tracking and management of aliquot samples 154.
[0066] Operation 516 prompts the user with a request for at least one aliquot parameter, including the number of aliquots. Operation 518 receives at least one aliquot parameter, including the number of aliquots, which may have been entered by a user. For example, if a reagent is to be converted into 10 aliquots, the user enters the number 10 into the GUI of the computing device 200. Operation 520 stores the number of aliquots in the database 235. Operation 522 embeds the at least one aliquot parameter into the two-dimensional barcode 156. Embedding in the two-dimensional barcode 156 may be in the memory 225. The number of aliquots may be embedded in the two-dimensional barcode as plain text. Additionally or alternatively, the aliquot number may be embedded in the two-dimensional barcode. That is, the two-dimensional barcode engine 222 may create the two-dimensional barcode 156 in the memory 225 prior to printing. Similarly, at operation 542, the process may embed multiple reagent parameters into the two-dimensional barcode 156. At operation 526, the user may enter a first text string to be added to the two-dimensional barcode 156. This may be plain text that is added to the two-dimensional barcode in memory 225 that is the label 152 attached to the sample 154.
[0067] 5C , process 500 may include adding a second text string configured to be readable adjacent to the two-dimensional barcode (block 528). The second text string may be text printed on label 152 and may be easily readable. Process 500 may include printing a number of aliquot labels corresponding to the number of aliquots (block 530). At operation 532, the user may select an option to save the data embedded within the two-dimensional barcode and the second text string as a template 240. For example, computing device 200 may save the data embedded within the two-dimensional barcode and the second text string as a template.
[0068] The process 500 may store the plurality of reagent parameters, the data embedded in the two-dimensional barcode 156, and the second text string in the database 236 (block 534). At operation 536, the number of remaining aliquots may be stored in the database 236 for later retrieval by the computing device 200. At operation 538, the computing device 200 may notify the user if the number of remaining aliquots is below a predetermined threshold. For example, a pop-up warning may alert the user when the number of aliquots is low as predetermined by the user in the settings. The computing device 200 may direct the user to a product page link in response to the number of remaining aliquots being below the predetermined threshold (block 540). At operation 542, the computing device may automatically reorder the reagent in response to the number of remaining aliquots being below the predetermined threshold.
[0069] 5A-5D illustrate example blocks of process 500, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 500 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figures 5A-5D. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 500 may be performed in parallel.
[0070] Referring again to FIG. 3 , the user may select button 306 to initiate an operation to modify the 2D barcode 156 presented to the user before printing, during the workflow, or at any other time. In certain embodiments, the ability to modify the 2D barcode may always be manually available. The user may select button 308, which prompts the user to scan the 2D barcode. After scanning, the entire sample history may be shown to the user. The sample history may be embedded within the 2D barcode and / or retrieved from storage in a database. For example, if a sample was heated for two hours, this information may be documented in the 2D barcode and marked with a time / date stamp. These data may be copied and pasted from the program, saved in a template format, or exported to a PDF for images for record-keeping purposes. Additionally or alternatively, the sample history snapshot may be uploaded and updated to a location in the cloud, where a virtually unlimited amount of data about the sample may be stored and accessed at any time and place. Furthermore, data may be linked to other instruments or experiments using cloud storage.
[0071] A user may also select a create sample history operation by pressing button 310. By pressing button 310, a user initiates process 600 shown in Figure 6. Process 600 may be initiated by operations engine 138 of Figure 1 or operations engine 234 of Figure 2. Figure 6 shows a flowchart diagram of a method 600 illustrating a create new sample history label operation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. According to an example, one or more process blocks of Figure 6 may be performed by computing device 200.
[0072] Operation 602 provides multiple operations for selection by a user. Operation 604 selects a new sample history label creation operation from the multiple operations. This may be generating a label for tracking within a laboratory environment. Operation 606 determines identifying information corresponding to the sample. Operation 608 provides a sample history label format. In some embodiments, the two-dimensional barcode 156 may include the entire history of the sample 154. Operation 610 adds a first text string configured to be embedded within the two-dimensional barcode. This may be any arbitrary text entered by a user. Operation 612 adds a second text string adjacent to the two-dimensional barcode, configured to be readable on the label. Operation 614 adds a timestamp to one of the first and second text strings corresponding to the creation time of the label. The timestamp may be added ASCII, including date / time text. 6, process 600 may include storing the first text string, the second text string, the identification information, and the timestamp in a database (block 616). Also shown in FIG. 6, process 600 may include printing a label having a two-dimensional barcode in an adhesive material using printer 150 (block 618).
[0073] It should be noted that, although Figure 6 illustrates example blocks of process 600, in some implementations process 600 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 6. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 600 may be performed in parallel.
[0074] 7 illustrates a flowchart of a method illustrating a sample history label update operation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. According to an example, one or more process blocks of FIG. 7 may be performed by a computing device 200.
[0075] As shown in FIG. 7, process 700 may include providing a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 702). Additionally, as shown in FIG. 7, process 700 may include selecting a sample history label update operation from a plurality of operations (block 704). Also, as shown in FIG. 7, process 700 may include prompting a user with a label scan request (block 706). As further shown in FIG. 7, process 700 may include scanning an existing label in response to the label scan request (block 708). Process 700 may include identifying the sample based on identification information embedded within the existing label (block 710). Process 700 may include adding a second text string to append to a first text string, where the first and second text strings are configured to be embedded within a two-dimensional barcode (block 712). A third text string configured to be readable on the label may also be added adjacent to the two-dimensional barcode (block 714). Process 700 may include adding a timestamp to one of the second and third text strings corresponding to an update time of the label (block 716). Operation 718 prints, using a printer, a label having a two-dimensional barcode in an adhesive material.
[0076] It should be noted that, although Figure 7 illustrates example blocks of process 700, in some implementations process 700 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 7. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 700 may be performed in parallel.
[0077] Referring again to FIG. 3 , the user may select button 324 to save the template. Button 324 may initiate process 800 of FIG. 8 . The operation may be similar to entering data into a lab notebook or saving the data to a location in a file navigator for later viewing and / or analysis. The data may be embedded in a two-dimensional barcode, including sample history or another feature / functionality described herein, which may be exported to a file such as a PDF, MS Word document, text file, or image format, or stored in the cloud. In some embodiments, this data is automatically stored and does not need to be exported.
[0078] Additionally, method 800 may be initiated after selecting button 324. Figure 8 illustrates a flowchart diagram of method 800 illustrating operations from scan to export / save according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. According to an example, one or more process blocks of Figure 8 may be performed by computing device 200.
[0079] As shown in FIG. 8, process 800 may include providing a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 802). Operation 804 selects an operation from the plurality of operations, ranging from scanning to exporting / saving. Process 800 may include prompting a user with a label scan request (block 806). As further shown in FIG. 8, process 800 may include scanning a two-dimensional barcode on the label (block 808). Operation 810 determines identification information corresponding to the label. Process 800 may include obtaining a plurality of parameters corresponding to the label (block 812). As further shown in FIG. 8, process 800 may include selecting an option to save / export the plurality of parameters corresponding to the label (block 814). Process 800 may include saving / exporting the plurality of parameters in a selected file format from a plurality of file formats (block 816).
[0080] It should be noted that, although Figure 8 illustrates example blocks of process 800, in some implementations process 800 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 8. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 800 may be performed in parallel.
[0081] 3, the user may select barcode scan operation 316. Barcode scan operation 316 may simply allow a particular button to be pressed after selecting button 316. For example, in some embodiments, after pressing button 316, all buttons that are logically selectable after scanning a barcode may become selectable.
[0082] Another possible operation in the menu of operations 300 is a subtract button 318, e.g., subtract an aliquot and / or other sample from a reagent. Workflow: Inventory Management of Reagents, Aliquots, and Other Samples. The computing device 200 may keep track of aliquots and can notify and remind the user when existing aliquot stock is "low" enough to reorder new reagent or make new aliquots before they run out. The user can set the number of aliquots that is considered "low" enough for the user to make additional aliquots, and reminders can arrive within the app or via text message and / or email. In some embodiments, the computing device 200 can help replenish "low" reagents by directing the user to a product page link or automatically reordering the reagent.
[0083] 3 and 9, button 318 may cause computing device 200 to initiate method 900 of FIG. 9. FIG. 9 illustrates a flowchart diagram of method 900 illustrating a deduction operation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Thus, by way of example, one or more process blocks of FIG. 9 may be performed by computing device 200 (see FIG. 2).
[0084] As shown in FIG. 9 , process 900 may include selecting a barcode scan operation (block 902). Operation 904 prompts the user with a label scan request. Operations 926-928 are optional and may be configured within the software settings.
[0085] 9 illustrates example blocks of process 900, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 900 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in FIG 9. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 900 may be performed in parallel.
[0086] If a user wishes to duplicate a label, the user may press button 320, which initiates a process within computing device 200, thereby initiating method 1000, as shown in FIG. 10 . That is, FIG. 10 illustrates a flowchart diagram of a method / process 10000 illustrating a duplication operation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. By way of example, one or more process blocks of FIG. 10 may be performed by computing device 200. Method 1000 may be used to create multiple labels that are exact copies and / or that are modified before being printed. The user may be prompted to scan an existing barcode label, and computing device 200 may take a copy of the scanned label with all of the sample information contained within the barcode, which may then appear on the screen. The user may then print a copy, make modifications, or copy / paste and export the label or label data for record-keeping purposes.
[0087] Operation 1002 provides a plurality of operations for selection by a user, for example, by providing a menu of operations 300 shown in FIG. 3 . At operation 1004, the user selects a replication operation from the plurality of operations. Operation 1006 prompts the user with a label scan request. The user scans the label (block 1008). At operation 1010, the computing device may determine identification information corresponding to the sample. Operation 1012 displays a replication label for the scanned label, and operation 1014 displays at least one parameter corresponding to the replication label. The user may be prompted for modification of the at least one parameter (block 1016). At operation 1018, process 1000 incorporates the identification information and the at least one parameter into a two-dimensional barcode if the at least one parameter is modified (block 1018). Operation 1020 prints a replication label having a two-dimensional barcode on an adhesive material using a printer.
[0088] 10 illustrates example blocks of process 1000, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 1000 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in FIG 10. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1000 may be performed in parallel.
[0089] 3 and 11, a user may press scan-to-add operation 322 to initiate an add to a process or sample, for example, method 1100, which indicates an add operation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. By example, one or more process blocks of FIG. 11 may be performed by computing device 200.
[0090] For example, a user may bring in a new "mixture" in the laboratory, which may be a chemical reaction, a mixture of buffer or mobile phase reagents, an experiment, or other, where multiple components (e.g., reagents, chemicals, buffers, aliquots, etc.) are mixed together and manipulated by a particular means. The computing device 200 may allow the user to scan multiple barcodes on each of the components to be mixed together (or if the components do not have barcodes on one or more of the components, the user may manually enter information for the specific components), and then combine this information together into a single new barcode for the overall mixture, reaction, etc. The computing device may also automatically enter label text to provide an experiment or mixture identifier that the user can edit if necessary. A label may be printed and applied to the container in which the mixture is being performed. This label may be saved as a common "recipe" as a template for the next time this reaction / mix is performed in the lab. Scanning the mixture label allows the user to recognize information about each of the components and may save, copy / paste, or export the information for record-keeping purposes.
[0091] In yet additional embodiments, the computing device 200 calculates the final concentration or composition of each component in the mixture (e.g., a mixture of 10% (v / v) FBS, 0.05 M sodium pyruvate, and 1 mM EDTA). The computing device may provide a calculator that determines how much of a particular reagent should be added to the mixture to produce the final concentration. In yet additional embodiments, the computing device may also include a plate map stored in a two-dimensional barcode that can be entered, saved, and exported by a user for record-keeping purposes using the computing device.
[0092] 11 , method 1100 may include offering a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 1102). At operation 1104, a user may select an additional operation from the plurality of operations. At operation 1106, a user may scan a first label of a first sample and at operation 1108, a second label of a second sample. The computing device 200 may receive a plurality of parameters corresponding to mixing the first sample and the second sample together to generate a mixed sample (block 1110). As used herein, receiving may indicate that information or data is received via user input, via a database response, as found in a scanned barcode, and / or as received from a data file.
[0093] 11 , process 1100 may include automatically generating at least one of a plurality of parameters corresponding to the mixed sample (block 1112). Operation 1114 determines an amount of a particular reagent to be added to the mixed sample to achieve a predetermined concentration. Operation 1118 may incorporate the plurality of parameters corresponding to the mixed sample and the identification information into a two-dimensional barcode, and operation 1120 may incorporate a plate map into the two-dimensional barcode. In operation 1122, the computing device uses a printer to print a third label having the two-dimensional barcode in the adhesive material (block 1122).
[0094] 11 illustrates example blocks of process 1100, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 1100 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in FIG 11. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1100 may be performed in parallel.
[0095] 3 and 12, a user may select the scan-to-dilute button 323, which may cause the computing device 200 to initiate a method 1200 for indicating dilutions according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. By way of example, one or more process blocks of FIG. 12 may be performed by the computing device 200. A user may wish to create serial dilutions of a reagent, drug, antibody, chemical, cell mixture, etc. The computing device may prompt the user to enter information (if the reagent does not have an existing barcode label) or to scan a barcode for the reagent to be diluted. Upon scanning or entering, the computing device may ask the user to enter the fold dilution (e.g., 10x) and the number of dilutions the user wants to create. In some embodiments, the computing device automatically enters the exact number of labels, reagent information, and unique concentrations for each dilution, which are included as one of the text identifiers on the label. In some embodiments, a dilution calculator may be provided.
[0096] As shown in FIG. 12 , process 1200 may include providing a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 1202). Operation 1204 selects a dilution operation from the plurality of operations (e.g., the user may press button 323 in FIG. 3 ). As shown in FIG. 12 , process 1200 may include providing a dilution calculator for use by a user (block 1206). [0097] 12 illustrates example blocks of process 1200, it should be noted that in some implementations, process 1200 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in FIG 12. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1200 may be performed in parallel.
[0098] 3 and 13, a user may select the scan-to-store button 324 to initiate the method 1300 shown in Fig. 13. That is, Fig. 13 illustrates the method 1300 illustrating scan-to-store operations according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. According to an example, one or more process blocks of Fig. 13 may be performed by the computing device 200.
[0099] In a laboratory environment, long-term or short-term storage of samples may be utilized. The computing device 200 may allow a user to create “equipment” labels for equipment, such as refrigerators, freezers, or cryotanks. These equipment labels include information such as the name of the equipment, the location of the equipment, the last calibration date, the shelf number, the temperature, etc. Selecting button 324 prompts the user to first scan the reagent the user wants to store and then scan the equipment label indicating the location where the sample is stored. Depending on the type of equipment scanned, the user may add specific information (e.g., shelf number or strand number) and other annotations to help identify the sample when it needs to be retrieved. Once a reagent is “stored” in a specific location, the computing device 200 may add the reagent to a list compiled for the specific location / equipment label that is also searchable. Thus, if a sample is lost, the user may search for the sample using keywords to reveal its location. In some embodiments, RFID labels and RFID-compatible barcode readers may be utilized for sample replenishment and inventory management to more specifically identify physical locations.
[0100] As shown in FIG. 13 , process 1300 may include offering a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 1302). At operation 1304, the user may select an operation from the plurality of operations, from scan to store, and then, at operation 1304, scan the device label of the device using the operation. As further shown in FIG. 13 , process 1300 may include scanning a label corresponding to a sample (block 1308), and then, at operation 1310, the user may store the location of the sample as stored within the device (e.g., the information may be stored in a database). Also shown in FIG. 13 , process 1300 may include storing an association of the sample with the device label (block 1312). Operation 1312 stores the location on an RFID tag associated with the sample and the device.
[0101] It should be noted that while Figure 13 illustrates example blocks of process 1300, in some implementations process 1300 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 13. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1300 may be performed in parallel.
[0102] 3 and 14, a user may select button 326 to scan for an expiration date. That is, button 326 may initiate method 1400 of FIG. 14. [0108] The computing device 200 may assist in the creation of a GHS (Globally Harmonized System) label for a chemical or reagent. In some embodiments, this option provides the user with a text box where the user may search for the reagent in a catalog. Additionally, the user may scan an existing "scan here now" label to automatically obtain this information. The computing device may then input a colored image label of the reagent to be printed and dispensed in the aliquot, reagent, or experimental mixture. Additionally, the user may create a custom GHS label if desired. In additional embodiments, scanning a barcode on a GHS label may provide the user with a link to the product page and safety data sheet (SDS) for that particular chemical.
[0109] A user may scan and create a GHS label by pressing button 330, which may initiate process 1500 of FIG. 15 . Process 1500 may include offering a plurality of operations for selection by a user (block 1502), for example, by providing button 330. The user may then select button 330 to initiate a globally harmonized label creation operation from among the plurality of operations (block 1504). Computing device 200 may then search for a reagent in a catalog (block 1506). As further shown in FIG. 15 , process 1500 may include selecting a reagent (block 1508). Computing device 200 may obtain a predetermined template corresponding to the globally harmonized label (block 1510) and then print a globally harmonized label corresponding to the predetermined template in an adhesive material using a printer (block 1512).
[0110] It should be noted that while Figure 15 illustrates example blocks of process 1500, in some implementations process 1500 may include additional, fewer, different, or differently arranged blocks compared to those depicted in Figure 15. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1500 may be performed in parallel.
