[0001] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 890,270, filed August 22, 2019, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. [Technical field]
[0002] The present invention is directed to optical systems, and more particularly, to optical systems that may be utilized in medical instruments such as endoscopes. [Background technology]
[0003] Optical systems are utilized in a variety of medical instruments to illuminate a target area. Many such optical instruments utilize optical fibers to transmit light from a light source to the target area to be illuminated. As shown in FIG. 1, one common method of coupling light from a light source 1 into an optical fiber utilizes a lens 3 having an elliptical total internal reflection (TIR) periphery, which is focused at a focal point (f in ) and optically couples with the surface of the light source at another focal point (f out ) and point the light at it. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] However, many endoscopes include an integral tapered glass optic 4, shown in Figure 2. The tapered glass optic 4 delivers light from a standard endoscope light source (typically a xenon or halogen bulb) into the fiber 2. Light rays that strike the periphery of the tapered glass optic typically reflect at an angle that causes many of the rays to escape the system by refraction (e.g., rays A, B, and C).
[0005] Thus, there is a need for an optical system that can enhance the coupling of light from a light source to an optical fiber, particularly an optical system that can be incorporated into a medical instrument such as an endoscope. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] In one aspect, an optical system is disclosed. The optical system comprises a lens having an input surface that receives light from at least one light source and an output surface where the light exits the lens. The lens further comprises a circumferential surface extending between the input surface and the output surface and configured to direct at least a portion of the light incident through the output surface to an output focal point by total internal reflection. The optical system further comprises a tapered light pipe having an input surface optically coupled to the output surface of the lens to receive at least a portion of the light exiting the lens, and an output surface where at least a portion of the received light exits the light pipe through the output surface. The light pipe further comprises a circumferential surface extending between the input surface and the output surface, the cross-sectional area of the light pipe decreasing going from the input surface to the output surface. A light guide is optically coupled to the tapered light pipe to receive at least a portion of the light exiting the output surface of the light pipe. The output focal point of the lens is disposed within the tapered light pipe.
[0007] In some embodiments, the output focal point is positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location selected to prevent light emanating from the output focal point from exiting the tapered light pipe via the periphery of the tapered light pipe.
[0008] In some embodiments, the output focal point is located along the optical axis of the tapered light pipe. Further, in some embodiments, the location of the output focal point is closer to the output face of the tapered light pipe than to the input face of the tapered light pipe.
[0009] By way of example, in some embodiments, the output focal point is positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location such that at least about 80% of the light emanating from the output focal point exits the tapered light pipe without hitting the circumferential surface of the tapered light pipe.
[0010] In some embodiments, the output focal point is positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location where light diverging from the output focal point exhibits a divergence angle equal to the numerical aperture of the light guide.
[0011] In some embodiments, the tapered light pipe exhibits a draft angle of from about 1 to about 20 degrees.
[0012] In some embodiments, the input surface of the lens includes a cavity that receives light emitted by the light source, hi some embodiments, such a cavity can be configured to receive at least a portion of the light source.
[0013] In some embodiments, at least a portion of the periphery of the lens has an elliptical shape characterized by an input focal point located near the input face of the lens and an output focal point located within the tapered light pipe, hi some embodiments, the light emitting surface of the light source (e.g., the light emitting surface of an LED or halogen bulb) is located at or near the input focal point.
[0014] In some embodiments, the maximum distance from the output face of the tapered light pipe to the output focal point (x max ) is given by the following relation:
[0015]
number
[0016] Here, R out denotes the radius of the output face of the light pipe, and α denotes the divergence angle of the light propagating beyond the output focus.
[0017] In a related aspect, an endoscope is disclosed that includes an optical system that receives light from at least one light source and directs the light to the body portion for illuminating the body portion. The optical system can include a lens having an input surface that receives light from the at least one light source and an output surface where the light exits the lens. The lens further has a periphery extending between the input surface and the output surface and configured to direct at least a portion of the light incident through the output surface to an output focal point by total internal reflection. The optical system includes a tapered light pipe having an input surface optically coupled to the output surface of the lens to receive at least a portion of the light exiting the lens, and an output surface where at least a portion of the received light exits the light pipe through the output surface. The light pipe further has a periphery extending between the input surface and the output surface, the cross-sectional area of the light pipe decreasing going from the input surface to the output surface. The light guide is optically coupled to the tapered light guide to receive at least a portion of the light exiting the output surface of the light guide, and the output focal point of the lens is disposed within the tapered light guide.
[0018] In some endoscope embodiments, the output focal point is positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location selected to prevent at least about 80% of the light emanating from the output focal point from exiting the tapered light pipe through the circumferential surface of the tapered light pipe. By way of example, the output focal point may be positioned along the optical axis of the tapered light pipe, e.g., closer to the output face of the tapered light pipe than to the input face of the tapered light pipe. In some endoscope embodiments, the output focal point may be positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location where at least about 80% (e.g., at least about 90% or 100%) of the light emanating from the output focal point exits the tapered light pipe without striking the circumferential surface of the tapered light pipe. In some endoscope embodiments, the output focal point is positioned within the tapered light pipe at a location where the light emanating from the output focal point exhibits a divergence angle equal to the numerical aperture of the light guide. Additionally, in some embodiments, the tapered light pipe may be characterized by a draft angle of about 1° to about 20°.
[0019] The various aspects of the present invention can be better understood by reference to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the associated drawings, which are briefly described below. [Brief description of the drawings]

[Diagram 2] FIG. 2 illustrates generally an optical system for use in an endoscope that delivers light from a light source to a target area. [Diagram 3] 3A and 3B show a schematic diagram of an optical system according to an embodiment of the present invention. [Figure 4] FIG. 4 shows a schematic diagram of an endoscope incorporating an optical system according to the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0021] The present invention is generally directed to an optical system that allows for efficient coupling of light emitted by a light source into an instrument, such as an endoscope, for illuminating a target area of interest. Various terms are used herein in accordance with their ordinary meaning in the art. As used herein, "numerical aperture" refers to a dimensionless number that characterizes the range of angles through which a system can capture or emit light.
[0022] As used herein, "about" is intended to indicate up to a 5% variation (eg, of a numerical value).
[0023] 3A and 3B, an optical system 100 according to one embodiment includes a light source 102 optically coupled to a lens 104 to transmit light. A variety of light sources can be utilized in the practice of the invention. By way of example, in some embodiments, the light source can be a light emitting diode (LED or halogen bulb). In some embodiments, the light source 102 generates light in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, e.g., in the wavelength range of about 450 nm to about 700 nm, although in other embodiments, light sources generating light having other wavelengths can be utilized.
[0024] The lens 104 is optically coupled to the light source 102 and has an input surface 104a for receiving light from the light source 102 and an output surface 104b through which the received light, or at least a portion of the light, passes through the lens. The peripheral surface 104c extends between the input surface 104a and the output surface 104b. In this embodiment, the peripheral surface 104c has two focal points f in and f out In this embodiment, the light source 102 has a focal point f in (also referred to herein as the “input focal point”) at or near the focal point f out (also referred to herein as the “output focus”) is external to lens 104 .
[0025] The optical system 100 further includes a light guide 106 and a tapered light pipe 108 disposed between the lens 104 and the light guide 106. The tapered light pipe 108 has an input face 108a for receiving light from the lens and an output face 108b, which is optically coupled to the light guide 106 such that light leaving the output face 108b enters the light guide 106. The cross-sectional area of the tapered light pipe 108 decreases from the input face 108a to the output face 108b of the tapered light pipe 108. More specifically, in this embodiment, the tapered light pipe 108 has substantially circular input and output faces, and the radius of the input face of the light pipe (Rin) is smaller than the respective radius of the output face (Rout). A circumferential surface 108c extends between the input face 108a and the output face 108b. The taper of the light pipe 108 may be characterized by a draft angle, which may be, for example, from about 1° to about 20°.
[0026] In this embodiment, the lens 104 and the position of the tapered light pipe 108 relative to the lens 104 are set to an output focal point f out is configured to be located within the tapered light pipe 108. More specifically, in this embodiment, the output focus f out is positioned along the optical axis (OA) of the light pipe closer to output face 108b than to input face 108a of the light pipe.
[0027] As shown in FIG. 3A, light rays entering the light pipe 108 converge at an angle (β) to an output focus (f out ) and then converges to the output focus (f out ) toward the output face of the light pipe (the divergence angle is equal to the convergence angle). In some embodiments, the lens 104 is aligned with the output focal point f out The tapered light guide 108 is configured such that the divergence angle of the light rays propagating beyond it is substantially equal to the numerical aperture of the light guide 106. This allows light exiting the tapered light guide 108 and entering the light guide 106 to be efficiently coupled out.
[0028] In some embodiments, the output surface 108a of the tape light pipe is connected to the output focal point fout Maximum distance to (x max ) is given by the following relation:
[0029]
number
[0030] Here, R out denotes the radius of the output face of the light pipe, and β denotes the divergence angle of the light propagating beyond the output focus.
[0031] As discussed herein, an output focal point f out By placing the light pipe in the recess 104, light entering the light pipe is prevented from exiting the light pipe through its periphery, and therefore such light can be efficiently coupled into the light guide 106.
[0032] The lens 104, light pipe 108, and light guide 106 may be formed from a variety of suitable materials. By way of example, in some embodiments, the lens 104 may be formed from a polymeric material such as PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) or PC (polycarbonate). Alternatively, the lens 104 may be formed from glass, such that the lens 104 may be coupled to a high power light source (e.g., a high power LED). In this embodiment, the tapered light pipe 108 is formed from glass, but in other embodiments may be formed from suitable polymeric materials, such as those mentioned above. Additionally, in this embodiment, the light guide is in the form of an optical fiber (or a bundle of optical fibers), which allows the optical fiber to bend as it directs light introduced into the light guide to the target area.
[0033] The optical system according to the present invention can find various applications. By way of example, such an optical system can be incorporated into an endoscope as an illumination source. For example, FIG. 4 shows an endoscope 400 having an endoscope body 402 including a flexible elongated element 404 extending from a proximal end (PE) to a distal end (DE). The elongated element is configured to be inserted into a patient. The exemplary endoscope further includes a handle 406 for manipulating the device.
[0034] An optical system according to the present invention can be coupled to an endoscope body 402 to provide light for illuminating a target area. In this embodiment, the optical system is coupled to the endoscope body via a light guide adapter 406. More specifically, the light source 102, the lens 104, the tapered light pipe 108, and a portion of the light guide 106 are disposed within a housing 406a of the light adapter 406. The light guide 106 extends from the optical coupler to the flexible element 404, with the distal end of the light guide located near the distal end (DE) of the flexible element, such that light traveling through the light guide 106 can exit the distal end of the flexible element to illuminate the target area of interest.
[0035] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications can be made to the above embodiments without departing from the scope of the present invention.
