Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to optical elements. [Background technology]
[0002] In recent years, research and development of optical elements that can be used in the terahertz band has been progressing in order to realize various technologies using terahertz waves (electromagnetic waves in the terahertz band). For example, the following Non-Patent Document 1 discloses a terahertz wave absorber. This Non-Patent Document 1 exemplifies an embodiment in which an anti-reflection film with a refractive index adjusted by nanoparticles such as titanium oxide fine particles or hollow polystyrene spheres is provided on a highly doped silicon substrate. [Prior art documents] [Non-patent literature]
[0003] [Non-Patent Document 1] GongjieXu, et al., "0.1-20THz ultra-broadband perfect absorber via a flatmulti-layer structure," Optics Express 24, 23177 (2016) Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] Examples of optical elements include various elements such as lenses, polarizers, spectroscopes, and sensors, in addition to the above-mentioned absorbers. In constructing optical elements that can be used in the terahertz band, adjusting the refractive index for terahertz waves is an important technical issue. In the above-mentioned Non-Patent Document 1, the concentration of nanoparticles dispersed in a resin is controlled to form any refractive index layer, and the layers are stacked in order from the refractive index layer with the highest concentration of nanoparticles to create a terahertz wave absorber. However, this method requires the production of composites with multiple concentrations corresponding to each refractive index layer, which causes a problem that the manufacturing process of the optical element becomes complicated.
[0005] The present disclosure has been made to solve the above problems, and has an object to provide an optical element that is simple to manufacture and has a refractive index for terahertz waves that can be easily adjusted. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] In order to solve the above problems, the inventors of the present application have focused on the relationship between the wavelength of light and the thickness of the layers constituting the optical element in the course of intensive research. Then, they have found that when the thickness of the layer constituting the optical element is sufficiently small compared to the wavelength of the terahertz wave, the layer does not have sensitivity to the terahertz wave. In the visible light wavelength band, in order to make the thickness of the layer constituting the optical element sufficiently small compared to the wavelength of the light, the layer thickness needs to be, for example, 1 nm or less, and the manufacturing method of such a layer is very limited. In addition, in the visible light region, there are many options for optical elements without considering the relationship between the wavelength of light and the thickness of the layer. On the other hand, the wavelength band of the terahertz wave is on the longer wavelength side than the wavelength band of visible light, and it is possible to make the thickness of the layer constituting the optical element sufficiently small compared to the wavelength of the light. Therefore, the inventors of the present application have found that by combining layers that are not sensitive to the terahertz wave, an optical element that is easy to manufacture and whose refractive index for the terahertz wave is easy to adjust can be realized, and have completed the present invention.
[0007] An optical element according to one aspect of the present disclosure comprises a laminate including a first refractive index layer and a second refractive index layer having mutually different refractive indices for terahertz waves, the laminate having a pair layer group in which a plurality of pair layers each consisting of a first refractive index layer and a second refractive index layer are laminated, the thickness of the first refractive index layer and the thickness of the second refractive index layer are both smaller than the wavelength of the terahertz waves, and each of the pair layers has a predetermined effective refractive index for the terahertz waves according to the ratio of the thicknesses of the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer.
[0008] In this optical element, both the first and second refractive index layers have a thickness smaller than the wavelength of the terahertz wave. Therefore, the first and second refractive index layers have no sensitivity to the terahertz wave, and the effective refractive index of the pair layer consisting of the first and second refractive index layers can take a value between the refractive index of the first and second refractive index layers depending on the thickness ratio of these layers. Therefore, in this optical element, the effective refractive index for the terahertz wave can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the thickness ratio of the first and second refractive index layers in the pair layer. In addition, in this optical element, the desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers with different refractive indices, so that the optical element can be manufactured more easily than when a composite with a plurality of concentrations corresponding to each refractive index layer is manufactured.
[0009] The optical element may further have a main body supporting the laminate, and the effective refractive index of the pair layer for the terahertz wave may be closer to the refractive index of the main body for the terahertz wave in the pair layer group as the pair layer is closer to the main body. In this case, a pseudo moth-eye structure can be formed in the main body. Therefore, an anti-reflection structure with a wide bandwidth for the terahertz wave can be formed in the main body. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, so that ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0010] The optical element may further have a main body supporting the laminate, and the effective refractive indexes of the pair layers in the pair layer group with respect to the terahertz wave may be equal to each other. In this case, an antireflection structure similar to that of a single-layer antireflection film can be formed on the main body. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, so that ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0011] The optical element may further include a main body supporting the laminate, and the laminate may include a first pair layer group having a first effective refractive index for the terahertz wave and a second pair layer group having a second effective refractive index for the terahertz wave, which are alternately laminated. In this case, a structure similar to that of the dielectric multilayer film can be formed in the main body. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, and therefore ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0012] In the laminate, a plurality of pair layer groups having different effective refractive indices for terahertz waves may be distributed in a direction intersecting the stacking direction of the pair layers. In this case, it is possible to distribute regions having different effective refractive indices in any region in the direction intersecting the stacking direction of the pair layers. This refractive index distribution is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, so that ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0013] The thickness of the first refractive index layer and the thickness of the second refractive index layer may be 1 / 10 or less of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. In this case, it is possible to sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer to the terahertz wave. Therefore, it is possible to accurately bring the effective refractive index of the pair layer close to a target value.
[0014] The thickness of the first refractive index layer and the thickness of the second refractive index layer may both be 1 / 100 or less of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. In this case, it is possible to further sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer to the terahertz wave. Therefore, it is possible to more accurately bring the effective refractive index of the pair layer closer to the target value. Effect of the Invention
[0015] According to the present disclosure, it is possible to provide an optical element that is easy to manufacture and in which the refractive index for terahertz waves can be easily adjusted. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0017] Hereinafter, with reference to the drawings, a method according to one aspect of the present disclosure will be described. Optical Elements A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail.
[0018] FIG. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a layer structure of an optical element according to a first embodiment. The optical element according to the first embodiment is an element used for electromagnetic waves in the terahertz band (hereinafter referred to as "terahertz waves"). Examples of such optical elements include lenses, polarizers, spectroscopes, absorbers, and various sensors. In the following description, an element provided with an anti-reflection film is exemplified as the optical element. Furthermore, the frequency of the terahertz waves to which the optical element is applied is, for example, 0.1 THz to 10 THz. The wavelength of the terahertz waves in this band is 30 μm to 3000 μm.
[0019] As shown in FIG. 1, the optical element 1A includes a body 2 and an antireflection film 3 provided on the surface of the body 2. The body 2 has a main surface 2a located on the antireflection film 3 side in the thickness direction. This main surface 2a is an incident surface for terahertz waves in the optical element 1A. The body 2 may be a member that transmits terahertz waves, or may be a member that converts terahertz waves into electrical signals. When the body 2 is a sensor that detects terahertz waves, the body 2 is provided with a terahertz wave receiving unit, an amplifier circuit that amplifies the electrical signal output from the light receiving unit, various wiring, a connection terminal with an external device, and the like.
[0020] In this embodiment, the main body 2 is a material that transmits terahertz waves. Specifically, the main body 2 is a single crystal silicon substrate that has excellent transmittance to terahertz waves. At least a part of the silicon substrate may be doped with impurities. At least a part of the main surface 2a is made of silicon. The main surface 2a is not limited to being made of silicon only, and may include a metal surface that functions as part of wiring or the like.
[0021] The antireflection film 3 is a film that prevents or suppresses reflection of terahertz waves on the surface of the main body portion 2. As shown in Fig. 1, the antireflection film 3 is composed of a laminate P including a first refractive index layer 4 and a second refractive index layer 5 that have different refractive indices for terahertz waves. This laminate P has a pair layer group 7 in which a plurality of pair layers 6, each of which is made of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5, are laminated.
[0022] The first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are layers formed, for example, of an organic resin containing inorganic particles. The organic resin is, for example, a resin composed only of a cycloolefin-based polymer, or a resin mainly composed of a cycloolefin-based polymer. In this embodiment, the organic resin is a resin mainly composed of a cycloolefin-based polymer, and may contain a high molecular weight organic compound, a low molecular weight organic compound, or the like other than the cycloolefin-based polymer. The organic resin may contain a crosslinking agent, a polymerization initiator, or the like. The organic resin may also contain an inorganic substance other than the inorganic particles.
[0023] The inorganic particles are particles used to adjust the refractive index of the anti-reflection film 3, and are dispersed in the organic resin. The inorganic particles are made of, for example, a substance that is transparent to terahertz waves. The inorganic particles are also made of a substance that has a higher refractive index for terahertz waves than the organic resin. Therefore, the higher the concentration of inorganic particles dispersed in the organic resin, the higher the refractive index for terahertz waves, and the lower the concentration of inorganic particles dispersed in the organic resin, the lower the refractive index for terahertz waves.
[0024] Examples of inorganic particles include silicon particles, titanium oxide particles, and diamond particles. The silicon particles may be high-resistance silicon particles. The high-resistance silicon particles may be, for example, 1×10 3 The inorganic particles are silicon particles having a resistivity of Ω·cm or more. The average diameter of the inorganic particles is, for example, 5 nm or more and 3000 nm or less. The upper limit of the average diameter of the inorganic particles may be 1 μm, 200 nm, or 20 nm. The lower limit of the average diameter of the inorganic particles may be 200 nm, 20 nm, or 1 nm. The average diameter of the inorganic particles can be measured by, for example, laser diffraction / scattering method, dynamic light scattering method, photon correlation method, etc.
[0025] In this embodiment, the concentration of inorganic particles dispersed in the organic resin in the first refractive index layer 4 is higher than the concentration of inorganic particles dispersed in the organic resin in the second refractive index layer 5. That is, in this embodiment, the first refractive index layer 4 is a high refractive index layer having a higher refractive index for terahertz waves than the second refractive index layer 5, and the second refractive index layer 5 is a low refractive index layer having a lower refractive index for terahertz waves than the first refractive index layer 4. Note that the second refractive index layer 5, which is a low refractive index layer, may be made of only organic resin without inorganic particles dispersed therein.
[0026] In the pair layer 6 consisting of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are laminated with a predetermined thickness ratio. The thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are both smaller than the wavelength of the terahertz wave incident on the optical element 1A. The thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are, for example, 1 / 10 or less of the wavelength of the terahertz wave, and preferably 1 / 100 or less.
[0027] When the thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are sufficiently small relative to the wavelength of the terahertz wave, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are in a state of having no sensitivity to the terahertz wave. In this case, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 do not constitute two independent refractive index layers for the terahertz wave, and the refractive index for the terahertz wave of the pair layer 6 consisting of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 (hereinafter referred to as the "effective refractive index") can take a value between the refractive index of the first refractive index layer 4 and the refractive index of the second refractive index layer 5 depending on the thickness ratio of these layers.
[0028] In this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1, pair layers 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, and 6E are stacked in order from the side closer to the main body 2. The ratio of the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 to the second refractive index layer 5 is 3:1 in the pair layer 6A, 2:1 in the pair layer 6B, 1:1 in the pair layer 6C, 1:2 in the pair layer 6D, and 1:3 in the pair layer 6E. That is, in the pair layer group 7, the ratio of the high refractive index layer to the low refractive index layer is higher in the pair layer 6 closer to the main body 2. With this configuration, in the pair layer group 7, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 for the terahertz wave gradually approaches the refractive index of the main body 2 for the terahertz wave in the pair layer 6 closer to the main body 2.
[0029] The thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 in each pair layer 6 can be adjusted by applying the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 using, for example, an airbrush. When using an airbrush, for example, the airbrush is moved at a predetermined speed in one direction in the plane of the main surface 2a of the main body 2 to apply a thin film of a resin material. By repeatedly applying this thin film, the refractive index layer can be formed to any thickness. For example, if the thickness of the thin film formed by one application with the airbrush is 100 nm, a refractive index layer with a thickness of 15 μm can be formed by repeating the application of the thin film 150 times. The thickness of the refractive index layer can also be adjusted by controlling the moving speed of the airbrush. For example, when a thick refractive index layer is formed, the speed of the airbrush may be decreased, and when a thin refractive index layer is formed, the speed of the airbrush may be increased.
[0030] As described above, in the optical element 1A, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 are both thinner than the wavelength of the terahertz wave. Therefore, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 have no sensitivity to the terahertz wave, and the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 consisting of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 can take a value between the refractive index of the first refractive index layer 4 and the refractive index of the second refractive index layer 5 depending on the thickness ratio of these layers. Therefore, in the optical element 1A, the effective refractive index for the terahertz wave can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the thickness ratio of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 in the pair layer 6. In addition, in the optical element 1A, a desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers having different refractive indices, so that the optical element 1A is easier to manufacture than the case of preparing composites of multiple concentrations corresponding to the respective refractive index layers.
[0031] Moreover, the optical element 1A has a main body portion 2 that supports the laminate P, and in the pair layer group 7, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 for the terahertz wave gradually approaches the refractive index of the main body portion 2 for the terahertz wave as the pair layer 6 is closer to the main body portion 2. This allows a pseudo moth-eye structure to be formed in the main body portion 2. Therefore, an anti-reflection structure with a wide bandwidth for the terahertz wave can be formed in the main body portion 2. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers as described above, and therefore ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0032] In the optical element 1A, the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 are each 1 / 10 or less, preferably 1 / 100 or less, of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. This makes it possible to sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 to the terahertz wave. Therefore, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 can be accurately brought close to a target value.
[0033] It is preferable that the pair layer 6 is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5, but it may also include one or more other refractive index layers within a range in which the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 for the terahertz wave can be adjusted. [Second embodiment]
[0034] FIG. 2 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the layer structure of the optical element according to the second embodiment. The optical element 1B according to the second embodiment is different from the optical element 1A according to the first embodiment in the layer structure of the laminate constituting the antireflection film 3. Specifically, in the optical element 1B, as shown in FIG. 2, in all pair layers 6 constituting the pair layer group 7, the ratio of the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 to the second refractive index layer 5 is 1:1. That is, in the optical element 1B, in the pair layer group 7, the effective refractive indexes of the pair layers 6 for the terahertz wave are equal to each other. As in the first embodiment, the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 are both 1 / 10 or less, preferably 1 / 100 or less, of the wavelength of the terahertz wave.
[0035] This antireflection film 3 is similar to the antireflection film 3 of the first embodiment in that it has an antireflection function against terahertz waves, but the principle of antireflection is different. The antireflection film 3 of the first embodiment realizes a wide-band antireflection structure by a pseudo moth-eye structure. On the other hand, the antireflection film 3 of the second embodiment realizes a narrow-band antireflection structure like a so-called single-layer antireflection film. This antireflection film 3 is established when the effective refractive index of each pair layer 6 is √n and the thickness of the laminate P (pair layer group 7) in the stacking direction is ¼ of the wavelength of the terahertz waves, where n is the refractive index of the main body 2 with respect to the terahertz waves. In this case, the reflection component reflected at the interface between the laminate P and air and the reflection component reflected at the interface between the laminate P and the main body 2 cancel each other out, so that the reflection of the terahertz waves of a wavelength determined according to the thickness of the laminate P in the stacking direction can be pinpoint-prevented.
[0036] In such optical element 1B as well, the effective refractive index for terahertz waves can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the ratio between the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 in the pair layer 6. Moreover, in the optical element 1B as well, a desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers having different refractive indices, making the manufacturing easier than producing composites with multiple concentrations corresponding to the respective refractive index layers.
[0037] In the optical element 1B, the effective refractive index of each pair layer 6 for the terahertz wave is equal to each other in the pair layer group 7. This makes it possible to form an antireflection structure similar to a single-layer antireflection film in the main body 2. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, and therefore ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0038] Also in the optical element 1B, the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 are both 1 / 10 or less, preferably 1 / 100 or less, of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. This makes it possible to sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 to the terahertz wave. Therefore, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 can be accurately brought close to a target value. [Third embodiment]
[0039] Fig. 3 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a layer structure of an optical element according to a third embodiment. In an optical element 1C shown in Fig. 3, a laminate P has a first pair layer group 7A and a second pair layer group 7B. The first pair layer group 7A has a first effective refractive index for terahertz waves. The second pair layer group 7B has a second effective refractive index for terahertz waves. In the example of Fig. 3, the first pair layer group 7A and the second pair layer group 7B are laminated in this order from the side closer to the main body portion 2.
[0040] In the first pair layer group 7A, the thickness ratio of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 constituting the pair layer 6 is 2:1. In the second pair layer group 7B, the thickness ratio of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 constituting the pair layer 6 is 1:1. Therefore, in the optical element 1C, the high refractive index layer of the first pair layer group is located on the side closer to the main body 2, and the low refractive index layer of the second pair layer group 7B is located on the side farther from the main body 2. In this optical element 1C, an antireflection structure with a wider band than that of the second embodiment described above can be realized.
[0041] In such optical element 1C as well, the effective refractive index for terahertz waves can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the ratio between the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 in the pair layer 6. Moreover, in the optical element 1C as well, a desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers having different refractive indices, making it easier to manufacture than when composites of multiple concentrations corresponding to the respective refractive index layers are produced.
[0042] Also in the optical element 1C, the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 are both 1 / 10 or less, preferably 1 / 100 or less, of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. This makes it possible to sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 to the terahertz wave. Therefore, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 can be accurately brought close to a target value.
[0043] In this embodiment, the laminate P is composed of two pair layer groups having effective refractive indices different from each other, but the laminate P may be composed of three or more pair layer groups having effective refractive indices different from each other. When the laminate P is composed of three or more pair layer groups having effective refractive indices different from each other, each pair layer group may be arranged so that the closer the pair layer group is to the main body portion 2, the closer the refractive index is to the main body portion 2 in a stepwise manner. [Fourth embodiment]
[0044] Fig. 4 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the layer structure of an optical element according to the fourth embodiment. The optical element 1D shown in Fig. 4 is different from the third embodiment in that a first pair layer group 7A and a second pair layer group 7B are alternately laminated in a laminate P. That is, in the optical element 1D, the first pair layer group, which is a high refractive index layer, and the second pair layer group 7B, which is a low refractive index layer, are alternately positioned in the lamination direction of the laminate P.
[0045] In such optical element 1D as well, the effective refractive index for terahertz waves can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the ratio between the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 in the pair layer 6. Moreover, in the optical element 1D as well, a desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers having different refractive indices, making the manufacturing easier than producing composites with multiple concentrations corresponding to the respective refractive index layers.
[0046] In the optical element 1D, a first pair layer group 7A having a first effective refractive index for terahertz waves and a second pair layer group 7B having a second effective refractive index for terahertz waves are alternately laminated in the laminate P. This allows a structure similar to a dielectric multilayer film in which high refractive index layers and low refractive index layers are alternately laminated to be formed in the main body 2. This structure is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, and therefore ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0047] Also in the optical element 1D, the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 are both 1 / 10 or less, preferably 1 / 100 or less, of the wavelength of the terahertz wave. This makes it possible to sufficiently reduce the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 to the terahertz wave. Therefore, the effective refractive index of the pair layer 6 can be accurately brought close to a target value.
[0048] In this embodiment, the laminate P is formed by alternately stacking two pair layer groups having different effective refractive indices, but the laminate P may also be formed by repeatedly stacking three or more pair layer groups having different effective refractive indices in descending order of effective refractive index. [Fifth embodiment]
[0049] Fig. 5 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a layer structure of an optical element according to a fifth embodiment. In an optical element 1E according to the fifth embodiment, a plurality of pair layer groups 7 having different effective refractive indices for terahertz waves are distributed in a laminate P in a direction intersecting the stacking direction of pair layers 6. In the example of Fig. 5, the optical element 1E does not have a main body portion 2, and is composed only of the laminate P. The laminate P has a circular shape in plan view as a whole. A first pair layer group 7A having a circular shape in plan view is disposed in the central portion of the laminate P, and a second pair layer group 7B having an annular shape in plan view is disposed in the outer edge portion of the laminate P so as to surround the first pair layer group 7A.
[0050] In the first pair layer group 7A, the thickness ratio of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 constituting the pair layer 6 is 1:1. In the second pair layer group 7B, the thickness ratio of the first refractive index layer 4 and the second refractive index layer 5 constituting the pair layer 6 is 1:2. Therefore, in the optical element 1E, a circular high refractive index layer made of the first pair layer group 7A is located in the central part of the laminate P, and a low refractive index layer made of the second pair layer group 7B is located in a ring shape around this high refractive index layer.
[0051] In such optical element 1E as well, the effective refractive index for terahertz waves can be easily adjusted to a desired value by adjusting the ratio between the thickness of the first refractive index layer 4 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 5 in the pair layer 6. Moreover, in the optical element 1E as well, a desired refractive index can be obtained using only two types of refractive index layers having different refractive indices, making it easier to manufacture than when composites of multiple concentrations corresponding to the respective refractive index layers are produced.
[0052] In the optical element 1E, a plurality of pair layer groups 7 having different effective refractive indices for terahertz waves are distributed in a direction intersecting the stacking direction of the pair layers 6 in the laminate P. This makes it possible to distribute regions with different effective refractive indices in any region in a direction intersecting the stacking direction of the pair layers. In this embodiment, the effective refractive index of the peripheral portion of the laminate P is lower than that of the central portion. Therefore, in this embodiment, for example, a gradient index lens that refracts terahertz waves in a parabolic shape within the laminate P can be constructed. This refractive index distribution is formed using only two types of refractive index layers, so ease of manufacture can be maintained.
[0053] In this embodiment, three or more pair layer groups having different effective refractive indices may be distributed in any region in a direction intersecting the stacking direction of the pair layers 6. The distribution form is not limited to a circular or annular shape, and may be other forms such as a rectangular, lattice, or radial form. The propagation of the terahertz wave in the stack can be controlled by the distribution form of the pair layer groups. Therefore, in addition to the above-mentioned refractive index distribution lens, it can be applied to a waveguide, an optical cloaking material, a hyper lens, etc. [Variations]
[0054] In the above embodiment, a single crystal silicon substrate is exemplified as the main body 2, but the material for forming the main body 2 is not limited to this. The main body 2 may be formed of an optical material such as germanium or diamond. The main body 2 may also be formed of an optical crystal such as zinc telluride (ZnTe), lithium niobate (LiNbO3), or DAST (4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate). [Consideration of the relationship between the wavelength of terahertz waves and the thickness of the refractive index layer]
[0055] The relationship between the wavelength of the terahertz wave and the thickness of the refractive index layer will be considered below. Here, we will consider the condition under which the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer have no sensitivity to the terahertz wave. In other words, we will discuss the condition under which the effective refractive index of the pair layer is a value between the refractive index of the first refractive index layer and the refractive index of the second refractive index layer, and the pair layer functions as an intermediate refractive index layer between the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer.
[0056] FIG. 6 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the layer structure of the optical element used in the simulation. As shown in FIG. 6, in this simulation, an anti-reflection film 103 formed on a main body 102, which is a silicon substrate, was used as a model. The anti-reflection film 103 was formed by a pair layer group 107 in which a pair layer 106 consisting of a first refractive index layer 104 and a second refractive index layer 105 was laminated. Three patterns were prepared for the refractive index n1 of the first refractive index layer 104 and the refractive index n2 of the second refractive index layer 105. In pattern 1, n1=1.5 and n2=2.5. In pattern 2, n1=1.8 and n2=2.2. In pattern 3, n1=2.0 and n2=2.0. In pattern 1, the refractive index difference between the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 is larger than in pattern 2. In pattern 3, n1 and n2 are equal to each other. This pattern 3 is equivalent to an anti-reflection film with a single refractive index layer, and is the reference for this simulation.
[0057] The frequency of the terahertz wave was in the range of 0.1 THz to 100 THz. This range corresponds to a wavelength of 30 μm to 3000 μm. The layer thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105, which are variables in the simulation, were set to four values: 100 nm, 250 nm, 500 nm, and 1000 nm. In order to uniform the anti-reflection characteristics, the thickness of the pair layer group 107 was set to 20 μm in all cases, regardless of the layer thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105. Therefore, the number of layers of the pair layers 106 constituting the pair layer group 107 differs from each other depending on the layer thicknesses of the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105.
[0058] 7 to 10 are graphs showing the results of the simulation. In each of the graphs in FIG. 7 and FIG. 8, the horizontal axis indicates frequency, and the vertical axis indicates transmittance (amplitude). The graphs in FIG. 9 and FIG. 10 are obtained by extracting and connecting the peak points of oscillation in each of the graphs in FIG. 7 and FIG. 8. As shown in FIG. 7(A) and FIG. 9(A), when the layer thickness is 100 nm, the transmittance of both Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 oscillates in the range of 0.7 to 1 over the entire frequency range, similar to Pattern 3. From this result, it can be seen that the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 with a layer thickness of 100 nm do not have sensitivity to terahertz waves with frequencies of 0.1 THz to 100 THz, and these pair layers 106 function as intermediate refractive index layers. It can also be said that the layer thickness of 100 nm is sufficiently small with respect to the wavelength of terahertz waves with frequencies of 0.1 THz to 100 THz.
[0059] As shown in FIG. 7(B) (FIG. 9(B)), FIG. 8(A) (FIG. 10(A)), and FIG. 8(B) (FIG. 10(B)), as the layer thickness increases to 250 nm, 500 nm, and 1000 nm, the graphs of patterns 1 and 2 deviate from the graph of pattern 3 more. When the layer thickness is 500 nm and 1000 nm, a dip appears in both the graphs of patterns 1 and 2, where the transmittance drops significantly. In addition, the degree of deviation of the graphs is greater in pattern 1, where the refractive index difference between the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 is large, compared to pattern 2, where the refractive index difference between the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 is small. From these results, it can be seen that as the layer thickness increases, the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 become sensitive to terahertz waves with frequencies from 0.1 THz to 100 THz, and the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 contribute to the reflection of terahertz waves as two independent layers.
[0060] FIG. 11(A) is an enlarged view of the area surrounded by the dashed line in the graph shown in FIG. 10(B). In FIG. 11(A), the frequency (=3 THz) at which the wavelength of the terahertz wave is 100 μm is indicated by a dashed line. As shown in FIG. 11(A), in the case of a layer thickness of 1000 nm, in the region where the wavelength of the terahertz wave is greater than 100 μm (the region where the frequency is 3 THz or less), the deviation of the graphs of the patterns 1 and 2 from the graph of the pattern 3 is relatively small. In particular, in the pattern 2 where the refractive index difference between the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 is small, the value is almost the same as that of the reference pattern 3. From this, it can be seen that when the thickness of the first refractive index layer 104 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 105 are both 1 / 100 or less of the wavelength of the terahertz wave, the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer 104 and the second refractive index layer 105 to the terahertz wave is sufficiently small.
[0061] FIG. 11B is a reprint of the graph in FIG. 10A. In FIG. 11B, the frequency (=60 THz) at which the wavelength of the terahertz wave is 5 μm is indicated by a dashed line. As shown in FIG. 11B, in the case of a layer thickness of 500 nm, in the region where the wavelength of the terahertz wave is greater than 5 μm (the region where the frequency is 60 THz or less), no dip where the transmittance drops significantly does not appear, and the deviation of the graph of Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 from the graph of Pattern 3 is relatively small. From this, it can be seen that when the thickness of the first refractive index layer 104 and the thickness of the second refractive index layer 105 are both 1 / 10 or less of the wavelength of the terahertz wave, the sensitivity of the first refractive index layer and the second refractive index layer to the terahertz wave is sufficiently small.
