[0023] Detailed Description Before describing certain example embodiments of the present disclosure, it is to be understood that the disclosure is not limited to the details of construction or process steps set forth in the following description as the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways.

[0024] The syringe assembly of the present disclosure includes a plunger rod with one or more retention elements that prevent solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe when the plunger is accidentally pulled back on a partially pre-filled syringe. The syringe assembly of the present disclosure includes one or more retention elements to prevent break-loose contamination of the partially pre-filled syringe.

[0025] A syringe assembly according to a first aspect includes a plunger rod incorporating a retaining element or structure disposed on the plunger rod for interaction with the syringe barrel and a retaining ring on the syringe barrel. In one or more embodiments, the retaining ring is disposed on an inner surface of the barrel and extends inwardly into a chamber of the barrel. A cross-sectional width of the inner surface of the syringe barrel at the retaining ring is less than a cross-sectional width of the inner surface at the remainder of the syringe barrel. In one or more embodiments, the retaining structure is in the form of a mechanical stop. One embodiment of an assembled syringe is shown in FIG. 1 with an alternative embodiment of a plunger rod for use with the syringe barrel, which is shown separately in FIGS. 2-9. With reference to FIGS. 1-9, a syringe assembly according to one embodiment includes a barrel 10 including a sidewall 12 having an inner surface 14 defining a chamber 16 for holding a fluid, an open proximal end 11, and a distal end 19 including a distal wall with a tip 15, the tip 15 extending distally from the distal wall. The tip 15 includes a passageway 13 therethrough that is in fluid communication with a chamber 16. As shown in Figure 1, the open proximal end 11 includes a finger flange 20. The barrel sidewall 12 can be cylindrical or can have another shape.

[0026] As shown in FIG. 1, the tip 15 of the barrel may include a locking luer-type collar (as shown in FIG. 1) that concentrically surrounds the tip 15, or a luer slip connection (not shown). In one or more embodiments, the barrel may include a needleless connector. In one or more embodiments, the barrel may include a conventional medical connector. The collar 18 may include an inner surface having at least one thread thereon. A needle assembly (not shown) may also be optionally provided, including a cannula having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therethrough. A hub (not shown) having open proximal and distal ends that include a cavity may be attached to the proximal end of the cannula, the lumen being in fluid communication with the cavity of the hub. The needle assembly (not shown) is removably attached to the tip of the barrel by engaging the tip with the cavity of the hub, such that the lumen is in fluid communication with the chamber of the barrel.

[0027] As shown in Figures 1 and 3, a plunger rod 30 is provided and includes a plunger rod body 32 having a proximal end 31 and a distal end 39. The plunger rod 30 is slidable within the chamber 16 of the barrel 10 to allow fluid to flow out of the chamber 16. The plunger rod body 32 of the plunger rod extends outwardly from the open proximal end 11 of the barrel and may be disposed within the chamber 16. The plunger rod 30 includes a thumb press 29 at the proximal end 31 and a stopper 40 at the distal end 39. The stopper 40 includes a sealing edge 42 that forms a seal with the inner surface 14 of the barrel. The shape of the plunger rod may be modified to fit within barrels with different shaped side walls.

[0028] The plunger rod body 32 of the plunger rod includes an outer surface 34 forming a periphery around the plunger rod body 32 and an axial length extending from the proximal end 31 to the distal end 39. The plunger rod body 32 may include a single beam or structure, which may have a cylindrical or other shape. As shown in Figures 1-9, the body portion 32 may be formed by two perpendicularly intersecting beams 37. The beams may have a rectangular cross section. In the embodiment shown, the two intersecting beams 37 intersect to form an outer surface that faces the barrel inner surface 14 and delineates four quadrants 51, 52, 53, 54 (shown more clearly in Figure 3) that extend along the axial length from the proximal end 31 to the distal end 39 of the plunger rod.

[0029] In a preferred embodiment, as shown in FIG. 3, the plunger rod body includes two intersecting beams 37 that intersect to form a vertical crossbar 44 having an outer surface that outlines the four quadrants of a cross. For purposes of illustration, three of the four quadrants 51, 52, 53 are shown. The vertical crossbar 44 is longitudinally integrated with the thumb press 29 and the stopper engagement portion 28. The body of the plunger rod is not limited to being cross-shaped, and the crossbar 44 does not necessarily need to be vertical or symmetrical. The plunger rod body 32 may include another geometric shape that may be inscribed within the chamber 16 of the syringe barrel 10. For example, the body of the plunger rod may be triangular or rectangular.

[0030] A stopper engaging portion 28 having a threaded region is disposed adjacent the distal end 39 for securing the stopper. In one or more embodiments, the threaded region of the stopper engaging portion 28 is configured to receive corresponding threads of the stopper. In certain embodiments, the plunger rod and the stopper may be integrally formed or permanently attached. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the stopper engaging portion 28 is shaped to fit within a stopper cavity of the stopper and retain the stopper on the distal end of the plunger rod.

[0031] A plunger rod body is adjacent the threaded region. The plunger rod body is disposed within chamber 16 and is movable proximally and distally within chamber 16 relative to syringe barrel 10.

[0032] The plunger rod body and the retaining element may be made of a hard plastic or other material. Examples of such materials include polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, and combinations thereof.

[0033] The stopper 40 of one or more embodiments may be integrally formed with the distal end 39 of the plunger rod or may form a separate component connected to the distal end 39 of the plunger rod. The distal end 39 of the plunger rod may include an integrally formed stopper. As shown in FIG. 1 , the stopper 40 may include a conical distal surface and the barrel may include a conical inner surface at its distal wall. The stopper 40 is slidably disposed in fluid-tight engagement with the inner surface 14 of the barrel to draw fluid into and flow fluid out of the chamber.

[0034] The stopper 40 may be made of any material suitable for providing a seal with the inner surface 14 of the barrel. For example, the stopper 40 may be made of a thermoplastic elastomer, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or thermoplastic material, and combinations thereof. The stopper 40 may be integrally formed or may be comprised of separate components of the same or different materials joined together. The plunger rod 30 may be made of a material that is more rigid than the stopper, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, etc. The materials should be selected to be compatible with the procedure being used.

[0035] 1-9, one or more retaining elements 36 are disposed on an exterior surface of the plunger rod body portion 32. More specifically, one or more retaining elements are disposed on an exterior surface of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). The retaining elements 36 may be integrally formed or may be provided as a separate component that may be added to the plunger rod.

[0036] In one or more embodiments where the retaining element 36 is provided as a separate component, the plunger rod 30 or barrel 10 may further include structure for mounting the separate retaining element 36. In one or more embodiments, the chamber of the barrel may contain 10 mL of fluid. In one or more embodiments, the pre-filled fluid is a solution containing saline, heparin or citrate, or other drugs or medications. In one or more embodiments, the pre-filled fluid is a flush solution or medication. The 10 mL chamber 16 of the barrel may be pre-filled with a predetermined amount of solution ranging from 0 mL to 10 mL, preferably 1 mL, 2 mL, 3 mL, 4 mL, 5 mL, 6 mL, 7 mL, 8 mL, 9 mL, 10 mL, and the retaining element located on the plunger rod of the present disclosure interacts with a retaining ring on the inner surface of the barrel to prevent the pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user. In one or more embodiments, the chamber 16 of the barrel is pre-filled with 3 mL of solution. In one or more alternative embodiments, the chamber 16 of the barrel is pre-filled with 5 mL of solution. In one or more embodiments, a retaining ring is disposed on the inner surface of the barrel at the proximal end of the barrel. In one or more embodiments, the retaining ring is disposed on the inner surface of the barrel and interacts with a retaining element on the plunger rod to allow a predetermined amount of fluid to be pre-filled into the chamber of the barrel, ranging from 0 mL to 10 mL, e.g., 3 mL or 5 mL, and prevents the pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user.

[0037] As shown in FIG. 1, one embodiment of the present disclosure relates to a syringe assembly 6 having a barrel whose chamber can be pre-filled with a predetermined amount of fluid ranging from 0 mL to 10 mL, e.g., 3 mL or 5 mL, with a retaining element 36 disposed at a fixed position along the length of the plunger rod body 32 to prevent the pre-filled solution from exiting the sterile field "A" and entering a non-sterile field "B" disposed beyond the retaining element if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back into a non-sterile field by the end user.

[0038] In one or more embodiments, the plunger rod 30 includes an integral retaining element 36 along the length of the plunger rod body 32 that controls the maximum relative position to which the plunger rod 30 may extend proximally from the proximal end 11 of the syringe assembly. When the retaining element 36 abuts the retaining ring in the chamber 16 of the syringe barrel 10, the retaining element 36 of the plunger rod prevents the plunger rod from extending further from the proximal end 11 of the syringe 6 beyond a desired point, and for a partially pre-filled syringe, prevents pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe when the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back. The position of the retaining element 36 on the plunger rod body 32 is determined by the amount of fluid pre-filled into the syringe barrel 10, and the retaining element 36 prevents pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user.

[0039] In this disclosure, the convention followed is that the inward direction is the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5 and the outward direction is the direction perpendicularly away from the longitudinal axis 5 .

[0040] As shown in FIG. 2, syringe barrel 10 includes chamber 16. In one or more embodiments, the maximum volume of the chamber is 10 mL. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the volume of pre-filled fluid in chamber 16 can range from 0 mL to 10 mL, preferably 1 mL, 2 mL, 3 mL, 4 mL, 5 mL, 6 mL, 7 mL, 8 mL, 9 mL, and 10 mL. Within chamber 16, proximate and adjacent proximal end 11 of syringe barrel 10, is a retaining ring or retaining ring 21. Retaining ring 21 extends inwardly into chamber 16 of syringe barrel 10. Retaining ring 21 prevents retaining element 36 from translating proximally when retaining element 36 approaches or abuts retaining ring 21, preventing pre-filled solution from entering non-sterile areas of the syringe when the plunger rod is accidentally retracted.

[0041] As shown in Figures 2 and 3, an alternative embodiment of the plunger rod 30 includes one or more retention elements 36 disposed along the length of the crossbar 44, which when the plunger rod is placed into a 10 mL syringe barrel will limit the pre-filled volume in the syringe chamber 16 to a range of 0 mL to 10 mL, e.g., 3 mL or 5 mL, and prevent pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user. More specifically, the one or more retention elements are disposed on the exterior surfaces of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). The retention elements are disposed along the plunger rod body at the furthest outer end of the crossbar 44. The one or more retention elements are disposed along the plunger rod body at a length section of the plunger rod body 32, allowing the user to administer a desired amount of flush solution or medication in the range of 0 mL to 10 mL, e.g., 3 mL or 5 mL, depending on where the retention elements are positioned along the plunger rod. In one or more embodiments, the retaining element on the plunger rod interacts with a retaining ring, or retaining ring 21, disposed on the inner surface of chamber 16 of syringe barrel 10 and extending radially inward toward the chamber and / or plunger rod. Retaining ring 21 interacts with a retaining element 36 disposed on plunger rod 30 to prevent pre-filled solution from entering a non-sterile area of the syringe if the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user. In such embodiments, retaining ring 21 defines a narrow cross-sectional width as compared to the cross-sectional width defined by inner surface 14 of the barrel. Inner surface 14 of the barrel has a smaller cross-sectional width at retaining ring 21.

[0042] As shown in FIG. 4, for one or more particular embodiments, the mechanical stop for the plunger rod is located on a crossbar 44 that includes one or more straight walls 41 and curved walls 43 .

[0043] As shown in FIG. 4, the retaining element 100 is in the shape of a "shark fin." The retaining element 100 is a discontinuity along the length of the plunger rod body 32 on the curved wall 43. The retaining element 100 includes an inclined surface 102. The inclined surface 102 tapers outward toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The side walls 104 of the retaining element 100 are flush with the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44. The retaining element 100 may also have one or more flat portions 106 that run parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. The inclined surface has a drop-off or ledge that forms a flat end 108 of the retaining element 100. The flat end 108 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5.

[0044] In one or more embodiments, the retaining element 100 in the form of a "shark fin" projects radially from the outer surface of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). In one or more embodiments, the retaining element 100 in the form of a "shark fin" has a thickness equal to or slightly less than the thickness of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). In one or more embodiments, the retaining element 100 in the form of a "shark fin" does not project tangentially from the four quadrants (51, 52, 53).

[0045] As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, an alternative embodiment of the plunger rod includes a two-component retaining element 200 disposed and integrated into the walls 43 of the alternating crossbars 44. The retaining element 200 is a discontinuity along the length of the plunger rod body 32 disposed on the curved walls 43. The first component 210 of the retaining element is in the form of a "shark fin" and is integrated into the curved walls 43 of the crossbars 44 and includes a sloping surface 202. The sloping surface 202 tapers outward toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The side walls 204 of the retaining element 200 are flush with the straight walls 41 of the crossbars 44. The retaining element 200 may also have one or more flat portions 206 running parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. There is a drop-off or ledge on the sloping surface that forms a flat end 208 of the retaining element 200. The flat end 108 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5 .

[0046] The second component 220 of the retaining element 200 is a discontinuity integrated into the curved walls 43 of alternating crossbars 44, two of which have a first component 210 in the form of a "shark fin" and alternating two of the crossbars have a second component 220. The second component 220 is tapered, wedge shaped and integrated into the curved walls 43 of the crossbars 44. The second component 220 includes an inclined surface 222 that tapers outwardly toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The retaining element 200 may also have one or more flat portions 226 running parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. The sidewall 224 of the second component 220 projects outwardly from the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44 and extends inwardly over the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44 to "wrap" the crossbar 44 of the plunger rod body 32. Like the angled surface 222, the sidewall 224 of the second component 220 tapers outwardly toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. There is a drop-off from the angled surface 222 and the sidewall 224 that forms a flat end 228 of the second component 220 of the retention element 200.

[0047] In the body of the plunger rod, there may be only a single embodiment or a combination of embodiments of the retaining elements 100 and 200 used throughout the plunger rod body 32.

[0048] As shown in FIG. 7, an alternative embodiment of the plunger rod includes a two-component retaining element 300 arranged and integrated with alternating crossbars. The retaining element 300 is a discontinuity along the length of the plunger rod body 32 on the curved wall 43. The first component 310 of the retaining element is in the form of a "shark fin" and is integrated with the curved wall 43 of the crossbar 44 and includes a sloping surface 302. The sloping surface 302 tapers outward toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The sidewall 304 of the first component 310 is flush with the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44. The first component 310 may also have one or more flat portions 306 running parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. There is a drop-off or ledge on the sloping surface that forms the flat end 308 of the first component 310. The flat end 108 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5.

[0049] The second component 320 of the retaining element is in the form of a "shark tail" and is integrated into the curved walls 43 of the alternating crossbars 44. The second component 320 includes an inclined surface 322. The inclined surface 322 tapers outwardly toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. A sidewall 329 of the second component 320 projects outwardly from the crossbar 44 and is aligned with the inclined surface 322 and tapers outwardly toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The retaining element 300 may also have one or more flat portions 306 running parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. At the inclined surface 322 and the sidewall 329 there is a drop-off that forms a flat end 328 of the second component 320. The flat end 328 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5.

[0050] As shown in FIG. 8, an alternative embodiment of the plunger rod includes a two-component retaining element 400 disposed and integrated into the alternating crossbars. The retaining element 400 is a discontinuity along the length of the plunger rod body 32 on the curved wall 43. The first component 410 of the retaining element is in the form of a "teardrop" and is integrated into the curved wall 43 of the crossbar 44 and includes a sloped surface 402. The sloped surface 402 tapers outward toward the distal end 39 of the plunger rod body 32. The opposite tapering design provides a resistance force to the sloped surface 402 as it frictionally engages the retaining ring 21, preventing pre-filled solution from entering the non-sterile area of the syringe as the plunger rod is pulled back. This results in a stop of the proximal movement of the plunger rod 30 relative to the syringe barrel 10. The side walls 404 of the retaining element 400 are flush with the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44 .

[0051] In one or more embodiments, the first component 410 projects radially from the outer surfaces of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). In one or more embodiments, the first component 410 has a thickness that is the same as or slightly less than the thickness of the four quadrants (51, 52, 53). In one or more embodiments, the first component 410 in the above configuration does not project tangentially from the four quadrants (51, 52, 53).

[0052] The second component 420 of the retaining element 400 is in the form of a "submarine" and is integrated into the curved walls 43 of the alternating crossbars 44 and includes a ramp 422. The ramp 422 of the second component 420 tapers outwardly toward the distal end 39 of the plunger rod body. The ramp 422 tapers outwardly toward the distal end 39 of the plunger rod body 32. The ramp 422 of the second component 420 is outwardly tapered such that when the plunger rod is accidentally pulled back by the end user, the ramp 422 frictionally engages the retaining ring 21 to provide a resistance force to the ramp 422. This results in a stop of proximal movement of the plunger rod 30 relative to the syringe barrel 10. The second component 420 also includes a sidewall 428 that extends inwardly into the crossbar 44. In one or more embodiments, the second components 420 project tangentially to the curved wall 43. In one or more embodiments, the second components 420 also contact and encase a portion of the crossbar 44 on which they are disposed.

[0053] In one or more embodiments, the first component 410 of the retaining element and the second component 420 of the retaining element are arranged on alternating crossbars 44, two of the crossbars 44 having the first component 410 and alternating two of the crossbars having the second component 420.

[0054] In one or more embodiments, the plunger rod 30 may include a combination of retaining elements with or without walls flush with the straight walls of the crossbar.

[0055] One or more embodiments of the plunger rod having a retention element 400 provide the end user with a prolonged period to stop the pull back action as the resistance force increases.

[0056] An alternative embodiment of the plunger rod is shown in FIG. 9. As shown in FIG. 9, the retaining element 500 is in the form of a "shark fin". The retaining element 500 is a discontinuity along the length of the plunger rod body 32 on the curved wall 43. The retaining element 500 includes a sloping surface 502. The sloping surface 502 tapers outward toward the proximal end 31 of the plunger rod body 32. The sidewall 504 of the retaining element 500 is flush with the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44. The retaining element 500 may also have one or more flat portions 506 running parallel to the longitudinal axis 5. The sloping surface has a drop-off or ledge that forms a flat end 508 of the retaining element 500. The flat end 508 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 5. In one or more embodiments, the retaining element 500 further includes a plurality of tangential ribs 503 disposed on the sloping surface 502.

[0057] On the inside of the retaining element 500 on the multiple crossbars 44, there is a slotted hole 60 along with the plunger rod 30, as shown in FIG. 9. The slotted hole allows the retaining element 500 to deflect inward and outward directions. The slotted hole 60 allows for flexing of the retaining element 500 and the surface in which it is embedded. This added flexibility allows the plunger rod 30 to be assembled into the syringe barrel 10. To assemble the medical syringe 6, the distal end of the plunger rod 30 is inserted into the proximal end 11 of the syringe barrel 10. As the plunger rod enters the syringe barrel, the retaining ring 21 in the chamber 16 of the syringe barrel 10 exerts a force on the inclined surface 502 of the retaining element 500. The slotted hole 60 in the straight wall 41 of the crossbar 44 allows the retaining element 500 to deflect inward. When the flat end 508 of the retaining element 500 passes through the retaining ring 21 of the syringe barrel 10, the retaining element 500 snaps back from its deflected position, producing an audible "click" when assembly of the medical syringe 6 is complete.

[0058] In one or more embodiments, a plunger rod having any combination of the retention elements described herein may also include slotted holes 60 in a plurality of cross bars 44.

[0059] As shown in Figures 1-9, multiple retention elements may be positioned along the axial length of the plunger rod and may be positioned at predefined intervals along the axial length. In certain embodiments, the predefined intervals are equally spaced. Multiple retention elements may be positioned along the axial length of the plunger rod determined by the amount of solution to be prefilled, ranging from 0 mL to 10 mL, e.g., 3 mL or 5 mL, such that the stopper is prevented from being pulled back to a point where the prefilled solution may enter a non-sterile area behind the original position of the back of the stopper rib.

[0060] In one or more embodiments, one or more retaining elements 36 may be formed circumferentially along one segment of the outer surface of the plunger rod, while remaining segments of the outer surface do not include any retaining elements.

[0061] One or more retaining elements 36 of the plunger rod body 32 interact with the retaining ring 21 of the syringe barrel when a force is applied to the plunger rod in a proximal direction, such as caused by accidental pullback by the end user.

[0062] In operation, when used with the plunger rod described herein, the syringe assembly is pre-filled with a flush solution or agent using known methods. The pre-filled syringe undergoes a terminal sterilization process, either by autoclaving or radiation sterilization, at the manufacturing plant to generate a sterile pathway for the pre-filled liquid. In one or more embodiments, the flush solution can be any solution intended to clean or maintain the performance of vascular access devices (VADs). Exemplary flush solutions include saline flush solutions and / or heparin lock flush solutions. These solutions are known in the art and readily available. An example of a saline flush solution is 0.9% Sodium Chloride USP for Injection. An example of a heparin lock flush solution is 0.9% Sodium Chloride with 100 USP units of heparin sodium per ml or 10 USP units of heparin sodium per ml. Once assembled, the syringe assembly can be used by an end user to administer pre-filled medications by providing a distal force and to flush a VAD, such as a catheter of an IV set. To protect against accidental retraction, the retention configuration described in this disclosure prevents the stopper from being retracted to a point where solution could enter the non-sterile area behind the original position of the underside of the stopper rib.

[0063] According to one or more embodiments, one or more retention elements 36 disposed on the plunger rod are shaped to interfere or form an enhanced mechanical interference with the syringe barrel during proximal movement of the plunger rod. The change in mechanical force between the plunger rod and the barrel impedes, slows, or stops the movement of the plunger rod if a user applies an accidental force in the proximal direction to the plunger rod.
