Description

[Technical Field]

[0001] The present invention relates to multi-phase personal care compositions. In particular, the present invention relates to multi-phase personal care compositions comprising an aqueous phase and an oil phase, wherein the weight ratio of nonionic surfactant to fatty acid amide is at least 5:1, the aqueous phase is visually distinct from and in physical contact with the oil phase, and the nonionic surfactant is different from the fatty acid amide. [Background technology]

[0002] Today, personal care compositions with more user involvement are considered more attractive by consumers. A multi-phase personal care composition with rapid in-situ dispersion generation is an excellent example. The product delivered to the consumer is a multi-phase personal care composition with at least two visually distinct phases. Before application, the consumer can manually shake the container for a few seconds to generate a well-dispersed personal care product. The personal care product is then left to recover into a multi-phase personal care composition before the next use. If the interface between at least two phases is not clear and distinct, the personal care composition is much less attractive.

[0003] When the inventors developed a multi-phase personal care composition containing a fatty acid amide, they unexpectedly found that the multi-phase personal care composition with a distinct interface could not be restored after shaking, and this appearance was unattractive to consumers.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for a method for providing a multi-phase personal care composition containing a fatty acid amide with a distinct interface.Surprisingly, it has been found that by including a nonionic surfactant in a weight ratio of the nonionic surfactant to the fatty acid amide of at least 5:1, a multi-phase personal care composition with a distinct interface after shaking can be achieved. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]

[0005] In a first aspect, the present invention relates to a multi-phase personal care composition comprising an aqueous phase comprising a fatty acid amide and a nonionic surfactant, and an oil phase, wherein the weight ratio of nonionic surfactant to fatty acid amide is at least 5:1, the aqueous phase is visually distinct from and in physical contact with the oil phase, and the nonionic surfactant comprises a condensation product of a fatty alcohol having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms in either a linear or branched configuration with ethylene oxide, a condensation product of an alkylphenol having a C6 to C15 alkyl group with 5 to 25 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alkylphenol, a polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid ester, an alkyl glucoside, or a mixture thereof; and wherein the nonionic surfactant is different from the fatty acid amide.

[0006] In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a kit-of-parts comprising a cosmetic container, a multi-phase personal care composition of the present invention, and instructions for use of the kit.

[0007] In a third aspect, the present invention relates to a method of preparing a personal care product, the method comprising manually shaking a cosmetic container containing the multi-phase personal care composition of the present invention.

[0008] All other aspects of the present invention will become more readily apparent in view of the following detailed description and examples. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0009] Except in the examples, or unless expressly indicated otherwise, all numbers in this specification expressing quantities of ingredients or conditions of reactions, physical properties of materials and / or uses may be understood to be modified by the word "about."

[0010] All amounts are by weight of the composition unless otherwise specified.

[0011] It should be noted that in specifying a range of values, any particular upper value can be associated with any particular lower value.

[0012] For the avoidance of doubt, the word "comprising" is intended to mean "including" but not necessarily "consisting of" or "composed of." In other words, the listed steps or options need not be exhaustive.

[0049] The following examples are provided to facilitate understanding of the invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the claims.

[0050] [Example] [Example 1] This example demonstrates the effect of the weight ratio of surfactant to fatty acid amide on the formation of a multi-phase skin care composition. [Table 1]

[0051] The samples in Table 1 were prepared by mixing cocamide MEA at a temperature of 50-60°C, cooling to room temperature, and adding the other ingredients to obtain an aqueous phase. The oil phase was obtained by mixing the oil phase ingredients together. The samples were obtained by mixing the aqueous phase and oil phase.

[0052] Each sample was then packaged in three identical transparent bottles of equal volume. All bottles were simultaneously shaken by hand for 15 seconds. Five uniformly dispersed skin care products were formed. These were then allowed to settle and recover to a multi-phase state. The time required for each sample to recover to a multi-phase state is recorded in the last row of Table 1.

[0053] After all samples were recovered in a multiphase state, their appearance was visually inspected. It was found that aggregates were present at the interface between the water and oil phases in Samples A and B. In contrast, for Samples 1-3, a surprisingly distinct interfacial region was observed. This demonstrated that multiphase compositions provide distinct phase boundaries when the weight ratio of caprylyl / capryl glucoside to cocamide MEA is at least 5:1.

[0054] [Example 2] This example demonstrates the effect of surfactant type on the formation of a multi-phase skin care composition. [Table 2]

[0055] All samples were prepared according to the same procedure as described in Example 1. Each sample was then packaged in three identical clear bottles of equal volume. All bottles were simultaneously shaken by hand for 15 seconds. Five uniformly dispersed skin care products were formed. These were allowed to rest overnight (approximately 15 hours) to recover to a multi-phase state. Sample C was observed to be mostly a white emulsion with the naked eye, indicating that it could not recover to a multi-phase state. In contrast, Samples 4-7 recovered to a clear two-phase composition in approximately 4 hours.
